ANNUAL REPORT 2017 / 2018

THANK YOU FROM THE BOARD CHAIR & CEO

Kensington’s goal is to help people live their best lives at every step of the health journey. Donations to Kensington Health Foundation support those in our care, along with their families and caregivers, to access a suite of services unique to their needs and in the comfort of their community. Thanks to our donors, board members, staff and volunteers, we supported Kensington Health with $3.5 million in 2017/2018. Funds improve the lives of our residents in long-term care and hospice, offer support to families, and create access for the thousands of patients we see every day in our cancer screening, diagnostic imaging, and eye surgery clinics. The year also saw us lay the groundwork for a broader fundraising strategy by refining our governance processes and setting the stage for renewal, including the recruitment of Corinne Rusch-Drutz as the Foundation’s new CEO. It has been a busy period, marked by significant internal progress that, combined with new leadership and vision, will position us for the work ahead. — Marie Rounding, Board Chair & Mark Richardson, Interim CEO, The Kensington Health Foundation, 2017/18

REMEMBERING JOHN LIND The Kensington community lost one of its own when former Foundation Board Chair, John Lind, passed away peacefully in June, at the age of 82. John played an instrumental role in developing the Foundation’s vision and charting the growth of the organization from its roots as The Doctors Hospital to its role in the community today, ensuring access to the highestquality services and specialized programs. A remarkable leader, visionary philanthropist and true colleague, John will be dearly missed by those who had the pleasure to know and work alongside him. GETTING FRESH WITH SENIORS AN ANONYMOUS GIFT OF $135,000 IMPROVES ACCESS TO FRESH FOOD FOR SENIORS There’s a reason they say an apple a day keeps the doctor away. Including fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet has been proven to reduce several chronic diseases, including stroke, type 2 diabetes and certain cancers. That’s why it’s hard to believe that in Ontario—which has an abundance of locally grown produce—accessibility to fresh, unprocessed food for those living in long-term care has been an issue. While the government provides funding for meals, increasing food prices and the cost of fresh fruits and veggies exceeds that allotment. Deciding between quality care and good nutrition should never be a choice. When passionate donors see an opportunity to enhance the quality of life of those in our care, we all benefit. This is the impact this 3-year gift will have in our community, allowing us to offer a wide range of healthy meal options to our residents. CREATE A LASTING LEGACY Marty Kohn never saw himself as personally having a legacy at Kensington. He left that to his mother, Hanka. His influence was to honour his mother’s life—well lived—and those at the Gardens who cared for her for more than a decade after she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. It wasn’t easy for Marty to transition his mom into long-term care—it’s a challenging time for most people, filled with complicated decisions—but once he did, he knew he’d made the best decision. The change had such a positive impact it had on his mother’s quality of life.“The staff and the level of care were fantastic,” said Marty. “They showed incredible respect for the residents, including my mom.” “Kensington Market is where my parents landed when they arrived in Canada, with my sister, two suitcases and absolutely no money,” said Marty, recalling the family’s early days in one of the few areas of the city hospitable to Jews and other ethnic groups.“ It’s the place that welcomed them, and it was the place where they found themselves. It was only fitting that my mom lived the rest of her life in the neighbourhood she once called home.” Make your gift last a lifetime and learn more about legacy giving by contacting us at (416)-964-3636 | foundation@kensingtonhealth.org

A special bond between mother and son: A young Marty Kohn stands beside his late mother, Hanka, whom he visited six days a week for the 12 years she lived at Kensington Gardens.

MESSAGE FROM THE CEO Since arriving only a few short months ago, I’ve been struck by the deep roots, open arms and welcoming environment of the Kensington community. Like many stories we hear, my own relatives have roots in this community, finding themselves at home in the familiarity of this bustling urban neighbourhood. Kensington is and was known for celebrating difference, even during a time when culture was something carried on your back from one ocean shore to another. These differences are what make us special, and what makes the Kensington Health model of living well so unique, as we honour backgrounds, unique health needs and the desire to remain in the community for as long as possible. It’s a gift to come to an organization where everyone, from the frontline staff and personal caregivers, to doctors and donors share that vision and live those values. As the Foundation looks to build upon this history and plan for the future, we have the ability to draw upon the work of so many in Kensington’s past. I extend my warmest thanks to those whose involvement is interwoven in this rich fabric, and anticipate the many new narratives yet to be entwined.

Corinne Rusch-Drutz was appointed CEO of Kensington Health Foundation in August 2018.
