A YEAR OF BOLD NEW BEGINNINGS A lot has happened since our beginnings in 1954, when The Doctors Hospital opened to our local community. Today, Kensington Health proudly sees more than 90,000 visits to our clinics, community programs, hospice and long-term care home.

To keep pace with our growth, a little over a year ago the Kensington Health Foundation Board made some bold moves, hiring the first “outside” CEO and putting fundraising and community at the center of our efforts.

To meet expanding needs, the Foundation embarked on a new fundraising strategy, seeing our events work alongside other giving opportunities, which in 2018-19 allowed for over $3.6M in allocations to Kensington Health in support of operations, capital, programs and services.

The health care landscape is changing fast, forcing providers to do things differently. One thing that will not change at Kensington Health is our commitment to accessible care for our diverse and constantly evolving local community. It’s a promise we’ve kept for more than 60 years.

Of course, we couldn’t do this without your help. The generosity of our donors who invest in what we do allows us to go above and beyond. Thank you for sharing these values.

THE IMPACT OF PHILANTHROPY Health care is complex. So, it’s no surprise that most people don’t realize the role philanthropy plays in our ability to offer quality care. Provincial funding covers basic clinical, long-term care and hospice needs. But all the services that make Kensington special – like music therapy programs, cuttingedge surgical and infusion equipment, and fresh ingredients in our homemade meals – are funded through philanthropic support, covering as much as 39% of operational costs.

The impact of donor dollars can be seen everywhere. It lives in our community, including our staff who contributed an amazing $30,000 in donations this year.

What’s the secret sauce? Simple. When your organization has purpose and employees have passion, people come to work expecting not just to earn, but to give back. We also see more community support as local businesses, residents and families give – not just dollars, but time and expertise.

That so many give where they live speaks to the true value of community care in people’s lives.

MAKING THE LINKS: GOLF, PHILANTHROPY & COMMUNITY CARE

HOT DIGGITY DOG THIS COMMUNITY EVENT CUTS THE MUSTARD

What does golf have to do with community care you might wonder? The “link” is fundraising. Many of our programs simply wouldn’t happen if it weren’t for the tremendous generosity of our donors who allowed us to raise $330,000 (including gifts-in-kind) at the 2019 Golf Classic!

In the dog days of summer, we partnered with next-door neighbours Fancy Franks, who for the second year in a row, donated proceeds from National Hot Dog Day to Kensington Health. Over 1,000 people joined our street party that featured an all-day ping pong tournament, live DJ and of course lots of free hot dogs!

Supporters hit the green for the 19th year in a row at Kensington’s largest fundraiser of the year. Thanks to 26 sponsors, including presenting sponsor Menkes, the leadership of event Chair Carmen Di Paola, and our remarkable volunteers, we’ve raised more than $4.7M in the event’s nearly 20-year history!

Chaired by John Cape, and with support from SPIN Toronto and the team at RBC Bathurst & College, the BBQ bash really caught on! So much so, we were featured on Global News Morning, CBC, Chin Radio, BlogTO and Narcity.

Best of all, the festivities gave many of our long-term care residents cause to dance in their wheelchairs for a better part of the afternoon. If that doesn’t put a smile on your face in this dog-eat-dog world, not sure what will.

THE KENSINGTON HIKE It was so much more than a Sunday stroll when over 200 supporters came out in support of Kensington Hospice.

Previously held in spring, we made the bold decision to rename the annual event The Kensington Hike and move it to autumn in order to launch the Kensington Hospice Expansion.

From the heartfelt remarks of family members Sarah and Adam Kronick and Bernadette Warren, who talked about Kensington’s role for their loved ones in their final days, to the big news of the expansion, there was meaningful remembrance and renewal. Though running the Hike in the fall meant we deferred its revenue as well, the move had merit.

With support from our incredible volunteers, Mount Pleasant, Sodexo and a host of local businesses, we exceeded previous years, raising over $81,000.

LOUD & PROUD @KENSINGTON In June, Kensington raised the rainbow flag at a vibrant event honouring our LGBTQ+ residents and community.

Planned by the WRAP Committee (We Respect All People), the morning began with greetings from Olivia Chow, whose mother lived at Kensington Gardens, and featured thoughtprovoking voices of residents and staff who shared how meaningful it is to live in and work for a long-term care home that sees Pride as a celebration.

The event was marked with Kensington Pride t-shirts, designed by resident Denis Lansdell, who spoke at the ceremony and was later interviewed by CBC’s Matt Galloway on Metro Morning. The morning was capped off with a live DJ, fabulous drag performance, dancing and cupcakes…in every colour of the rainbow.

ADVANCING OUR FUNDRAISING STRATEGY Planning for an uncertain future in health care has always been central to the Foundation’s governance mandate. Since our founding in 1978, we’ve grown our net assets to an incredible $45M, and disbursed nearly $44M over the past 21 years.

The performance of our investment assets meant that we could fundraise mainly through events and specific campaigns. But Kensington’s expansion, along with changes to provincial funding, have made it necessary to put forward a more comprehensive mandate. Our new fundraising strategy positions our history in community care alongside our very real charitable need; enables giving across our campus at every point of care; seeks major donor support; and sees expanded Board engagement.

With several freshly-elected Board members and a new Advancement Committee, there is great excitement in amplifying Kensington as the hallmark for community care, and the role philanthropy plays in our commitment to access.

BEYOND THE BEDSIDE: KENSINGTON HOSPICE EXPANSION Kensington’s unparalleled commitment to accessible and highlypersonalized palliative care is about to nearly double in size, giving more choice and dignity to those living with dying.

In 2020, we will expand our facility with nine new beds and offer a new Community Day Hospice Program.

New facilities and programming will put those with life-limiting conditions at the centre of their care for as long as that may be.

By extending our extensive suite of personalized services provided to residents - and their loved ones - we will assist in the range of physical, emotional, social and spiritual challenges that end-of-life care brings on, alleviating the burden families can face.

Caring for those who are approaching end-of-life with agency and choice is one of the most important gifts we can give, but it’s also critically underfunded. Nearly 40% of current hospice operational costs are covered through Foundation support.
