Tailored Glass
Carmen Lozar creates tiny fantasias that are sly commentaries on femininity and domesticity. Her works are intimate and charming but often include a slightly eerie touch. Her Lamplighter may be a symbol of hospitality at its brightest but Carmen makes an anatomical leap that is the stuff of Grimm’s Fairy Tales. Dress Set for Dorothy includes not only the heroine’s bright jumper but the Witch’s hat and broom. In Ripe the young women gorges on juicy berries making a mess of herself even as her body expands into a lovely fecund vessel. Carmen Lozar first exhibited with this gallery while she was a student at the University of Illinois studying with William Carlson. She was part of a group of very talented artists who particapated in the inaugural (now annual) student show that the gallery mounts. Ten years after that student exhibition Carmen participated in a small group show at the gallery that showed how much she had developed her artistic vision and technical vocabulary. Imbued with humor and pathos her work gives voice to a sensitive woman who readily draws from her rich life as a wife, mother, teacher and maker. She has joined a modern impulse on the part of a handful of women working in glass to combine a distinctly feminine narrative with traditional techniques. I am absolutely thrilled to present Carmen Lozar’s latest body of work at my gallery. Please enjoy this publication which not only documents the exhibition but explores the artist’s evolution and shows her at work in the studio and at home with her family.
