Both women discuss their careers in the industry and give advice to individuals looking to enter the Energy sector. UK North Sea Oil & Gas Review

Major oil and gas field developments, start-ups, exploration drilling, and corporate deals marked this past month’s activity in the UK North Sea.

Equinor and partners started on 16 September production from the Utgard gas and condensate field, spanning the Norwegian-UK border in the North Sea. Recoverable resources at Utgard are estimated at around 40 million barrels of oil equivalent (boe) and daily production on plateau is expected to be around 43 000 boe. The project was delivered ahead of schedule and 25 percent below the cost estimate. This is the first time Equinor has led a field development for recovering resources across the border between the Norwegian and UK continental shelves.

“We take a collaborative approach with all our partners and service providers. We look forward to a successful and mutually beneficial working relationship with ASCO which will support the continued growth of our UK business,” Neptune’s UK Managing Director, Pete Jones, said.

“The field was discovered in 1982 and a development has been considered several times.

In 2016, Equinor acquired the UK share of the discovery to realise the development, which has become a profitable project even with substantially lower oil prices than we see today,” Equinor said in a statement.

MInteg, a subsidiary of EnerMech specialising in inspection and integrity, said on 17 September that it had been awarded its largest contract to date and would supply inspection services to a major oil and gas operator in the Southern North Sea. The scope of the work includes the inspection of infrastructure on five manned platforms and multiple unmanned satellite platforms, deploying MInteg staff trained in working-at-height and rope access techniques. The company expects to create up to 15 new posts in Great Yarmouth to service the five-year contract.

On 30 September, Chrysaor announced that it had completed the acquisition of ConocoPhillips’ UK oil and gas business for US$2.675 billion, after it had received all necessary regulatory approvals. The assets acquired produced some 72,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boepd) in the first six months of 2019. The deal also adds two new operated hubs to Chrysaor’s portfolio in the UK Central North Sea - Britannia and J-Block – in addition to an interest in the Clair Field area.

“We are now one of the largest UK producers with a portfolio of high-quality, long-life assets complemented by a professional and expert staff,” Chrysaor’s chief executive Phil Kirk said.

“We have identified several exciting growth opportunities in our expanded portfolio and across the CNS,” Kirk added.

Element Materials Technology said on 19 September that it had invested in two new mobile test rigs. Set up within ISO containers, the rigs can carry out weld fatigue testing of steel catenary risers either on-site or at its laboratories in Milan, Italy and Aberdeen, UK. Chrysaor said in mid-September that it had applied to the Oil and Gas Authority to increase production from the Hawkins and Seymour fields 137 miles from the Aberdeenshire coastline.

49ft gas column. Data acquired from the well is now undergoing analysis to generate a revised technical assessment of reservoir gas volumes and deliverability, meeting the primary objectives of the well.

On the same day, the Oil & Gas Technology Centre (OGTC) said that wave energy firm Mocean Energy, an Edinburgh start-up, had just set up a base in Aberdeen to commercialise their Seabase technology. Mocean is now looking for oil and gas partners to help bring their technology to power subsea equipment with ocean waves to market.

“Seabase is a wave energy machine small enough to fit in a shipping container yet robust enough to generate power in the harsh environment of the North Sea,” Mocean Energy Managing Director Cameron McNatt says.

Hurricane Energy plc said that the Warwick West well was spudded on 24 September using the Transocean Leader rig. Warwick West is the third and final well of the 2019 Greater Warwick Area drilling programme on Hurricane’s Lincoln and Warwick assets.

KCA Deutag’s unit RDS, a global provider of engineering and design solutions to the oil and gas, renewable and alternative energy sectors, said on 25 September that it had won a new contract to carry out a conceptual study for Pharis Energy.

Pharis Energy targets to launch the world’s first major offshore steam flood project and is currently exploring innovative ways to maximise oil recovery in the Pilot Field in the UK North Sea. RDS’s scope of work on this project will include Jack-Up screening and selection and the Well Head Platform design.

Craig International said on 25 September that it had secured £50 million worth of new contracts in the first half of 2019. Craig International has also won its first contract with

Petrofac in the UK following a competitive tender process. Craig International has won major contracts with Spirit Energy and BP in recent months. The Petrofac contract will see Craig International provide third party procurement services and the supply of general oilfield products to support Petrofac’s offshore operations in the North Sea. The contract is for three years with an option to extend for another two years.

Global E&C, an integrated Engineering Procurement and Construction (EPC) contractor, said on 27 September that it had won Life-of-field Contract for Brownfield Services with Apache’s North Sea subsidiaries—the largest award in the history of Global E&C. “The significance of this contract award cannot be underestimated. It signals a notable shift in how Apache has chosen to engage with the supply chain versus a more traditional contracting model and is a major statement in support of OGUK’s Vision 2035,” said Global E & C Managing Director Derek Mitchell.

Neptune Energy and its joint venture partners BP and JAPEX announced on 30 September they had awarded Valaris plc a contract to provide a heavy-duty jack-up drilling rig for the Seagull development oil project in the UK North Sea. Valaris will provide the Rowan Gorilla VI (VALARIS JU-248) to drill four firm wells for development in the Central North Sea. The 18-month drilling campaign is scheduled to begin in the third quarter of 2020. The Seagull development project, approved in March this year is expected to initially produce around 50,000 barrels of oil equivalent (boe) per day (80 percent oil) across its 10-year design life.

Proved plus probable gross reserves are estimated at 50 million boe, the operator Neptune Energy says.

Zennor Petroleum Limited said on 30 September that that its 2019 Finlaggan subsea installation campaign utilising six separate vessels over the summer had been safely completed.

The Finlaggan development project is targeting 30mmboe of gas condensate reserves from two subsea production wells tied back 20km to the Britannia platform. The project remains on schedule for first production in Q4 2020 as planned, says Zennor.

Delek Group’s Ithaca Energy has taken a decision, along with the other partners in the Isabella Oil Asset, to drill a first trial well in the area. The decision was based on recommendation from the project operator, Total E&P North Sea UK Ltd. Drilling is expected to begin on October 2019.

On 3 October, Shell said that Shell U.K. Ltd and its partner Ithaca Energy had taken a final investment decision on the Pierce Depressurisation Project in the UK Central North Sea. The investment will go towards modifying the existing floating production, support and offloading (FPSO) vessel, the Haewene Brim, which is owned and operated by Bluewater. The work also includes installing a sub-sea gas export line from the FPSO to the SEGAL pipeline, and the drilling of new wells.

The work on the Pierce development will take place in 2020 and 2021. The field is expected to produce more than 30,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day at peak production, Shell said.

“This important development of the Pierce field will allow us to unlock additional gas reserves for the UK’s homes and businesses, and value for our shareholders,” said Steve Phimister, Vice President Upstream and Director of Shell U.K. Ltd.

As part of the Pierce development project, Subsea 7 was awarded a siseable contract—of between US$50 million and US$150 million—by Shell for the engineering, procurement, construction, transportation and installation (EPCI and T&I) of a 30-km gas export pipeline, a gas export riser and associated subsea infrastructure, for tie-ins at the Haewene Brim FPSO.

“It is Shell’s eighth final investment decision in the UK Continental Shelf since the start of 2018. Each is part of a careful and cost-effective strategic expansion of our North Sea capacity, inline with our core upstream focus on profitable investments and competitive growth opportunities,” Phimister added.

Commenting on the FID, Mike Tholen, Upstream Policy Director OGUK, said: “This is good news and will help to meet more of the UK’s energy needs from domestic production.”

ODE Asset Management said on 4 October it had been appointed as Installation Operator of the Tolmount Platform, a Normally Unattended Installation (NUI). The Tolmount platform is currently being built and first gas is planned for Q4 2020. The Humber Gathering System will initially deliver gas from the Tolmount field, owned by Premier Oil and Dana Petroleum, to the Easington onshore gas terminal. i3 Energy plc said on 4 October that it had started drilling operations at Serenity with the spudding of the SA-01 appraisal well with the Borgland Dolphin semi-submersible drilling rig.

“Equinor will continue its efforts to mature and assess the opportunities in the adjacent Equinor operated P.2170 (Verbier) license, working closely with JOG as part of the overall Greater Buchan Area Plan to maximise economic recovery in the area,” Jersey Oil & Gas said.

Flow measurement R&D specialist TÜV SÜD National Engineering Laboratory has launched its £16-million Advanced Multiphase Facility (AMF) in East Kilbride, aiming to help oil and gas operators to ensure that production remains economically viable.

Spirit Energy said on 11 October that together with its partner Dana Petroleum, it would drill a new well at the Chestnut field by Q1 2020, extending the field life by three years. More than a decade ago, Chestnut was initially expected to produce 7 million barrels of oil in just over two years, but Spirit and Dana have invested in development and have since exported more than 24 million barrels. The new well could keep the Chestnut field producing until 2023.

Commenting on the decision to extend the life of Chestnut, OGUK’s supply chain director, Matt Abraham, said: “This continued commitment is a strong vote of confidence in the UKCS basin and demonstrates our supply chain expertise in extending the life of North Sea fields.”

Approving the development, the OGA said, via Scott Robertson, Area Manager – Central North Sea at the OGA:

“We are excited to be drilling this potentially high-impact well at Serenity which could add materially to i3's reserves and resources and may become a fast-tracked development alongside the neighboring Tain oil field,” said Majid Shafiq, CEO of i3 Energy.

“This latest Pierce Gas de-pressurisation development secures approval of another component of the Central Graben Area Plan, developed by the OGA and industry collaborating to maximise economic recovery from this region of the North Sea.”

Jersey Oil & Gas announced on 8 October that Equinor had decided not to exercise the threemonth option which Jersey had granted it over a 50-percent equity interest in Blocks 20/5a and 21/1a which contain the Buchan oil field and the J2 oil discovery.

Neptune Energy announced on 14 October that it had entered into a conditional sale and purchase agreement with Energean Oil and Gas to buy Edison E&P’s UK and Norwegian producing, development and exploration assets for US$250 million. The purchase is contingent on Energean completing its proposed acquisition of Edison E&P. If the deal is completed, Neptune Energy will boost its UK portfolio with a 25 percent working interest in the Glengorm gas condensate discovery in the UK’s Central North Sea, close to Neptune’s operated Seagull project, as well as with interests in the Scott, Telford, Tors, Wenlock, and Markham fields.

Review: Renewables in the UK and Europe

The UK and Europe were one of the early adopters of renewables and are expected to continue to lead the global race for development and usage of lower-carbon energy sources.

In the UK, the share of renewables in energy generation continues to increase, the oil and gas supply chain is investing in renewables to diversify and help meet the net-zero ambitions of the government. Operators continue to develop major renewable energy projects and collaboration between operators and suppliers grow.

Falling technology costs, concerns about carbon emissions, and the drive to develop low-carbon energy sources have helped renewables become the fastest-growing energy source globally.

“The pace at which renewable energy penetrates the global energy system is faster than for any fuel in history,” according to the BP Energy Outlook 2019 with forecasts through 2040.

Wind and solar power are set to account for nearly 50 per cent of global electricity generation in 2050, BloombergNEF says in it's New Energy Outlook 2019. Europe will decarbonise at the fastest clip, according to BloombergNEF estimates, while wind and solar power generation have already become the cheapest solution across more than two-thirds of the world. By 2030, wind and solar power will undercut commissioned coal and gas almost everywhere, BloombergNEF reckons.

Since 2010, technology costs in solar power have plunged by 85 per cent, costs in wind power have declined by 49 per cent, and battery costs have been drastically cut by 85 per cent.

According to the latest UK government figures from the end of September, the share of renewables in the UK electricity generation in the second quarter of 2019 stood at 35.5 per cent—a record for the second quarter and an increase of 3.5 per centage points compared to the second quarter of 2018. The higher renewables share was largely due to increased installed capacity. Renewable electricity generation came in at 27.1 TWh in Q2 this year, up by 9.9 per cent from Q2 2018, but 14 per cent lower than in Q1 2019, which had been the second highest on record for renewable electricity generation with 31.5 TWh. Onshore wind generation rose by 13 per cent to 6.1 TWh, while offshore wind generation increased by more than a quarter to 6.0 TWh. Yet, offshore wind generation was still 30 per cent lower than in Q1 2019, when average wind speeds were much higher than in Q2.

Renewable electricity capacity in the UK was 45.9 GW at the end of the second quarter of 2019, up by 7.9 per cent compared to the same period of 2018 and up by 1.9 per cent on the previous quarter. Two thirds of the increase in renewable capacity compared to last year came from wind power, the UK government figures showed.

In the same energy trends series at endSeptember, the UK government also published its analysis on the renewable electricity capacity and generation in Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, and the regions of England in 2018 compared to 2017.

Last year, renewable generation in the UK increased by 11 per cent compared to 2017, with generation in England rising 14 per cent, generation in Northern Ireland up 21 per cent, generation in Scotland going up 7.1 per cent, and generation in Wales down 2.2 per cent.

Overall renewables capacity rose by 10 per cent from 40.3 GW at the end of 2017 to 44.3 GW at end-2018, including a 9.7 per cent capacity increase in England, Northern Ireland capacity growth of 19 per cent, capacity in Scotland up 10.4 per cent, and capacity in Wales increasing 4.7 per cent.

Operators, as well as major oil companies, continue to work on large renewable projects in the UK, especially in wind power.

In early October, offshore wind developer Ørsted said that the final wind turbine had been installed at the Hornsea One offshore wind farm, which will be the world’s largest offshore wind farm capable of powering more than 1 million UK homes once it starts operations in 2020.

“We have benefitted from fantastic working relationships with contractors and suppliers, and that includes vessel providers who have maintained a constant stream of communication to ensure that turbine installation has been concluded on time and within budget,” said Duncan Clark, Ørsted Programme Director for Hornsea One. The Hornsea One offshore project will be topped by a new development led by oil and gas major Equinor, which has built an extensive wind power portfolio in recent years. Equinor and its partner SSE were awarded at the end of September contracts to develop three large-scale offshore wind projects in the Dogger Bank region of the North Sea—which will be the world’s biggest offshore wind farm development with a total installed capacity of 3.6 GW. “A full-scale development of Dogger Bank will constitute an industrial wind hub in the heart of the North Sea, playing a major role in the UK’s ambitions for offshore wind and supporting the net zero ambition,” Equinor’s chief executive Eldar Sætre said in a statement.

“We expect the cost reductions obtained by the industry through continuous project execution and technological innovation will contribute to continued value enhancement,” said the executive vice president for New Energy Solutions at Equinor, Pål Eitrheim.

The Dogger Bank project east of the Yorkshire coast is estimated to trigger a total capital investment of around £9 billion (US$11.1 billion) between 2020 and 2026, Equinor says.

Dogger Bank will not only be Equinor’s biggest project in terms of investment through 2026, but it will also be the world’s sixth-largest offshore development project in that period, Rystad Energy reckons. Dogger Bank is the only renewable energy offshore development among the top ten offshore projects, which feature oil and gas developments in the Middle East, Brazil, Mexico, and Azerbaijan.

“Equinor’s mega offshore wind investment promises hope for a deflated service industry.

An eleven-digit investment program - a rare occurrence within the offshore oil and gas industry - is entirely unprecedented in the offshore wind space,” Audun Martinsen, head of oilfield services research at Rystad Energy, said, commenting on the Dogger Bank project.

Another major oil and gas company, Italy’s Eni, has recently signed a collaboration agreement with wind and solar developer Mainstream Renewable Power to collaborate on potential developments of power generation from renewable sources, with an initial focus on the UK. In the latest Contracts for Difference (CfD) scheme in September, twelve new renewable energy projects won contracts, the UK government said, noting that those projects would provide some 6 GW of capacity— enough to power over seven million UK homes at record low costs.

“For the first time renewables are expected to come online below-market prices and without additional subsidy on bills, meaning a better deal for consumers. The costs of offshore wind is now around 30% lower than the second auction held in 2017, with projects now being delivered for as low as £39.65/ MWh,” the government said.

As the UK and Scottish Governments announced their net-zero ambitions, the UK’s

offshore oil and gas industry published a roadmap outlining ways in which the sector can contribute to low-carbon energy while continuing to provide a secure energy supply.

“Roadmap 2035 offers a blueprint for how we can continue to meet much of the UK’s oil and gas needs from domestic resources, progressively reduce associated production emissions and develop economy-wide decarbonisation technologies. With 40,000 new people needed in our industry, a quarter of whom will be in roles which don’t currently exist, it is an industry with an exciting future,” OGUK Chief Executive Deirdre Michie said, commenting on the roadmap.

“Our Economic Report 2019 shows we are already playing an active role in the transition to a more diverse energy mix, with many of our members investing in renewables, developing new technologies and bringing new solutions to market,” Michie added.

The European Union (EU) also makes significant strides in its target to have 20 per cent of final energy consumption from renewable sources by 2020. According to a recent EU progress report, the EU overall— including data for the UK—should exceed its 20 per cent target for 2020 by over 0.3 per centage points.

For 2030, the EU has a goal to have this renewables share up to at least 32 per cent.

According to the SolarPower Europe association, corporate sourcing of renewable power could and would play a leading role in meeting the 32-per cent target. Corporate sourcing of renewable power has risen rapidly in Europe, with 7.5 GW of Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) deals signed over the past five years, and 1.6 GW worth of PPA agreements in 2019 alone.

“Corporates are ready to help deliver Europe’s 32% renewable energy target by sourcing significant amounts of solar and wind energy to power their businesses. This is an important step towards a sustainable future, sending a strong signal that corporations have an essential role to play in driving Europe’s clean energy transition,” said Walburga Hemetsberger, CEO of SolarPower Europe.

According to the latest Renewables report by the International Energy Agency (IEA), the EU’s binding targets for 2020 and 2030, plus country-level policies and improved energy efficiency will drive a greater share of renewables in the power mix through 2023.

The EU’s capacity growth is set to overtake the United States to become the secondlargest growth market after China, with 125 GW of renewable power capacity coming online in 2018-2023. The accelerating growth in the EU will be thanks to the EU-wide targets, PPAs in key countries, and a growing corporate PPA market, according to the IEA.

“Overall, continuous cost reductions are expected to make renewables more competitive with new coal and natural gas plants in an increasing number of countries,” the IEA says.

Offshore Wind Leasing Round 4 officially opens The Pre-Qualification Questionnaire (PQQ) for Offshore Wind Leasing Round 4 – the UK’s first major new leasing round in a decade – has been formally issued by The Crown Estate.

Offshore Wind Leasing Round 4 will offer seabed rights for at least 7GW of new offshore wind projects in the waters around England and Wales. The PQQ is now available via The Crown Estate’s eTendering Portal that can be accessed via www.etendering. thecrownestate.co.uk/ The deadline for PQQ submissions is 29 November 2019.

The portal uses a platform provided by Jaggaer Onlyapplications via the portal will be considered. Details for how potential bidders can access the PQQ are available on The Crown Estate website.

PQQ is the first stage of the Round 4 leasing process and is designed to assess Bidders’ capability to deliver an offshore wind project, based on a set of financial, legal and technical criteria which Bidders must satisfy in order to qualify for the next stage. The PQQ stage runs until January 2020, and will be followed by the stages below; please note that the timings are indicative and the dates for each stage will be confirmed at the start of each stage: Invitation to Tender (ITT) Stage One (February 2020 – June 2020); Invitation to Tender (ITT) Stage Two (September 2020); Plan-Level Habitats Regulations Assessment (Autumn 2020 - Summer 2021); and Agreement for Lease (AfL) with successful bidders (Autumn 2021).

Despite the heightened tension in the Middle East in recent months, oil and gas producing countries in the region—many of which are OPEC members—go ahead with their plans to boost oil and gas production, strike alliances with foreign firms to lock in future demand for their oil and gas, and award contracts to foreign service contractors for expansion of the massive onshore and offshore oil and gas fields.

Greenfield investments in the Middle East are expected to surge this year to meet gas demand, Rystad Energy said at the beginning of 2019. Projects involving more than US$240 billion in greenfield investments are expected to be sanctioned in the world in 2019, with nearly 25 percent of those expected coming from the Middle East, Rystad Energy forecasts. Qatar, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Saudi Arabia are set to drive investment growth.

“The industry in the Middle East is aiming to ramp up gas production in order to meet rising regional demand, while also increasing oil output,” said Aditya Saraswat, senior analyst at Rystad Energy.

Of the counties expected to lead growth, Qatar’s major project to boost its LNG capacity to 110 million tonnes per year by 2024 is expected to require over US$35 billion in greenfield investments, making it one of the biggest projects to be approved in the region over the last decade, Rystad said.

The UAE is prioritising offshore gas projects to increase gas availability for domestic consumption and reduce its dependence on imported gas and LNG, looking to add 1.6 billion barrels of oil equivalent of resources.

Rystad Energy expects these plans will need some US$14.5 billion in greenfield investments.

Saudi Arabia plans to develop around 9.8 billion boe of additional resources by investing just over US$24.5 billion in greenfield projects at the Marjan, Berri, and Zuluf oilfields.

In early July 2019, Saudi Arabia’s state oil firm Saudi Aramco awarded 34 contracts worth a total of US$18 billion for the engineering, procurement, and construction of the Marjan and Berri increment programmes.

The Marjan increment programme is an integrated development project for oil, associated gas, non-associated gas, and cap gas from the Marjan offshore field, worth a total of US$12 billion. The development aims to boost the Marjan Field production by 300,000 barrels of oil per day (bpd)of Arabian Medium Crude Oil, process 2.5 BSCFD of gas, and produce an additional 360 MBCD of C2+NGL. The development will entail a new offshore gas-oil separation plant, as well as 24 offshore oil, gas, and water injection platforms.

The Berri increment programme, for its part, is worth around US$6 billion and is aimed at raising the offshore field’s production by 250,000

barrels of Arabian Light Crude per day. Once completed, the planned facilities will include a new gas-oil separation plant in Abu Ali Island to process 500,000 bpd of Arabian Light Crude Oil, and additional gas processing facilities at the Khursaniyah gas plant to process 40,000 barrels of associated hydrocarbon condensate.

The expansion project includes a new water injection facility, two drilling islands, 11 oil and water offshore platforms, and nine onshore oil production and water supply drill sites.

After the Marjan and Berri project commitments, the global offshore sanctioning tally for 2019 exceeded US$50 billion, while the Marjan expansion project alone was the largest field to be sanctioned globally since 2014, Rystad Energy said in July.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE), which hosts the Abu Dhabi International Exhibition & Conference (ADIPEC) on 11-14 November, is opening more oil and gas blocks to international bidding and is expanding natural gas production fields.

At the beginning of 2019, the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) awarded work for the dredging, land reclamation, and marine construction to build multiple artificial islands in the first phase of development of the

COUNTRY FOCUS earlier this year and invested in oil storage capacity outside the UAE to gain access to storage capabilities across some of its key export markets.

In August, ADNOC announced a strategic investment in global storage terminal owner and operator VTTI BV, in which the Abu Dhabi company would buy a 10-percent stake.

“VTTI’s diverse portfolio of storage assets across key target markets such as Asia, Africa and Europe, provides us with direct access to our customers around the world, a key building block to accelerating ADNOC’s transformation into a more integrated and commerciallyminded global energy player,” Al Jaber said.

In September, ADNOC closed the last leg of a deal that saw BlackRock, KKR, ADRPBF, and Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund GIC take a combined stake of 49 percent in select ADNOC oil pipeline infrastructure for US$4.9 billion.

ADNOC retains the remaining 51 percent in the new entity ADNOC Oil Pipelines and keeps sovereignty over the pipelines and management of pipeline operations.

Qatar, the world’s top LNG exporter, aims to boost its LNG production capacity by 43 percent—from 77 million tonnes annually now to 110 million tonnes a year in 2024.

Ghasha Concession. The Ghasha Concession consists of the Hail, Ghasha, Dalma, Nasr and Mubarraz offshore sour gas fields. The project is expected to take 38 months to complete and will provide the infrastructure required to further develop, drill, and produce gas from the sour gas fields in the Ghasha Concession.

Qatar is also building the largest carbon dioxide (CO2) recovery and sequestration facility in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, the Minister of State for Energy Affairs and CEO of Qatar Petroleum, said at the 40th Oil & Money Conference in London in early October.

Commenting on the initial work on the projects, UAE Minister of State and ADNOC Group CEO, Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, said:

“We need to reach the right balance of reliable and secure sources of energy, which maintains our growth needs while at the same time alleviates our environmental concerns,” AlKaabi said, outlining the benefits of LNG as “the destination fuel” of the energy transition.

“This award accelerates the development of the Hail, Ghasha and Dalma sour gas offshore mega-project, which is an integral part of ADNOC’s 2030 smart growth strategy. As one of the world’s largest sour gas projects it will make a significant contribution to the UAE’s objective to become gas self-sufficient and transition to a potential net gas exporter.”

Abu Dhabi also launched this year its second competitive block bid round, following the first-ever competitive block bid round that began on April 2018 and concluded successfully in March 2019. Abu Dhabi is offering five blocks up for commercial bidding in the second round, including three offshore and two onshore blocks.

“Some of the blocks already have discoveries, and within the combined area there are 290 targeted reservoirs from 92 prospects and leads. In addition to the country’s conventional potential, one of the offered blocks is expected to contain significant unconventional resources,” says ADNOC, which has set the end of November 2019 as the deadline for receiving bids.

ADNOC also welcomed minority foreign shareholders in its oil pipeline infrastructure

“It is versatile. It is flexible. It is economic. It is clean,” the Qatari minister said.

Qatar is looking to work with a growing number of LNG buyers as it bolsters its LNG export markets. At the same time, Qatar Petroleum leads a new wave of investment from national oil companies (NOCs) in international exploration, Westwood research showed in August.

Apart from Qatar Petroleum, the largest oilproducing companies in the Middle East—Saudi Aramco, ADNOC, and Kuwait Petroleum—will become even bigger, with plans to grow in natural gas, refining and petrochemicals, and at the same time sustaining their core oil production at home, Wood Mackenzie said in a report on October 2019.

“Domestic development remains central but international expansion is firmly on the agenda, especially for Saudi Aramco,” WoodMac said, estimating that the NOCs would require a total of US$1.2 trillion of investment over the next 20 years to achieve their ambitions.

“The combination of big ambitions and advantaged portfolios means we expect the Middle East NOCs to become increasingly competitive global energy players,” Wood Mackenzie reckons.

T. Boone Pickens Transformed the U.S. Oil Industry

The U.S. oil and gas industry lost a towering figure in September with the passing of T. Boone Pickens. Pickens spent more than 60 years in the business as an independent producer and was once the highest paid executive in America — not just in oil and gas but in any industry.

As one of the first “corporate raiders” of the 1980s, Pickens redefined how capital was distributed in the energy industry.

His company, Mesa Petroleum, like many independents, had been battling a wave of cheap imports from the major oil companies.

Those imports kept prices low, which made it difficult for the independents to expand.

For domestic producers, the cheapest oil had already been found, and replacing their reserves was becoming more expensive.

Pickens did an analysis and found that Mesa would need to invest $1 billion over a decade just to maintain its reserve base. But he soon found more fertile fields where huge reserves of oil and gas were vastly undervalued — the listings of the New York Stock Exchange.

He recognised that the stocks of most major oil companies were selling for a fraction of their asset values. Pickens developed a strategy to “seek out the most vulnerable, undervalued, poorly managed companies, then target one and make a major investment in that company.” He’d acquire an equity position and try to force the managers to increase returns. If they refused, Mesa would launch a takeover.

His first target was Cities Services Co. of Tulsa, Oklahoma, a company six times Mesa’s size.

Cities’ refineries and chemical plants were losing money, and Cities had been depleting

its oil and gas reserves for a decade. Pickens wanted to get control of those reserves, but Cities was too big for Mesa to buy. He lined up partners to make a hostile takeover offer.

At the time, the idea that a smaller company would buy a larger one seemed outlandish, and it quickly became controversial.

Rather than submit to Mesa, Cities sold itself to Gulf Oil Co., generating a $30 million profit for Mesa. (Gulf later withdrew its offer, and Occidental Petroleum Corporation eventually acquired Cities.)

The deal whets Pickens’ appetite for hostile takeovers, and he spent much of the 1980s pursuing other majors, including Gulf, Phillips Petroleum and Unocal. “I was seen as the financial barbarian with little regard for shareholders, employees or consumers,” Pickens wrote in his autobiography, Boone, published in 1987 In 1985, his run at Gulf landed him on the cover of Time magazine, which wrote: “To his victims, mostly entrenched corporate executives, he is a dangerous upstart, a sneaky poker player, a veritable rattlesnake in the woodpile. To his fans, he is a modern David, a champion of the little guy who can take on the Goliaths of Big Oil and more often than not gives them a costly whupping.”

It wasn’t just corporate titans who were

his victims, however. To fend off his raids, companies slashed expenses, and usually jobs. To this day, many former employees get angry at the mention of Pickens’ name.

But his strategy worked, at least as far as investors were concerned. In his 1983 bid for Gulf, for example, success again eluded him, as his target fled into the arms of what’s now Chevron. But Gulf shareholders made $6.5 billion on the deal — money that would have gone unrealised if Pickens hadn’t come on the scene. Mesa's portion of that profit was $760 million. Gulf shares almost doubled in value, to $80 after the deal from $41 before Pickens began his run. Pickens profited personally, too.

That year, he was the highest-paid corporate executive in America with more than $20 million in salary and deferred compensation.

Pickens saw himself as a champion of shareholders, but in some ways, his fight was more personal. Many independents saw his takeover threats as getting even with Big Oil for promoting cheap imports over domestic crude. “On one level, his campaign, for that’s what it was, represented the revenge of the independent oilman on the hated majors,” oil historian Daniel Yergin wrote in The Prize: The Epic Quest for Oil, Money and Power.

Indeed, for the rest of his life, Pickens would push politicians — especially the Republicans he supported — for energy policies to reduce dependence on foreign oil.

By the 1990s, the majors had either merged to flee Pickens’ takeover threats or had shored up their balance sheets. The undervalued assets were mostly gone. As the takeover game wound down, Pickens decided to focus Mesa on natural gas. During the 1980s, the U.S. government had adopted a series of laws to deregulate how natural gas was sold, traded and transported. Demand for gas was rising, and many in the industry, including Pickens, believed that it would become the fuel of the future, perhaps even unseating oil.

But as the markets opened up, and more gas became available, prices fell in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Pickens, meanwhile, had transformed Mesa into a partnership, promising huge dividends that, given weak prices, he couldn’t afford. The company borrowed heavily to make the payouts, and by the mid-1990s, it was stumbling under more than $1 billion in debt as it's market value plunged.

A few years later, Pickens became the target of a takeover threat himself, and many of his old Big Oil adversaries reveled in his comeuppance. He was forced out by investor Richard Rainwater, who took control of Mesa and renamed it Pioneer Natural Resources.

Ironically, Pickens’ predictions about natural

gas eventually proved true. Surging gas prices in the early 2000s catapulted Pioneer into a major player in the Permian Basin of West Texas, the world’s hottest oil and gas play.

Pickens was done with takeovers and public companies. A few months after being ousted from Mesa, he lined up investments from wealthy friends and set up an energy trading partnership in Dallas, BP Capital. Unlike Mesa, the company was private and out of the limelight. The partnership struggled in its first few years. By 1999, it had burned through all but $2.5 million of the $37 million Pickens had raised.

In 2000, though, he spotted early signs that natural gas prices would rise, and he positioned the company to profit from the increase. The strategy worked. Gas quadrupled that year, and his trading shop, BP Capital, ended the year with a balance of $237 million.

Natural gas topped $13 per thousand cubic feet in 2003 and by 2006, Pickens became a billionaire at age seventy-six. He continued to go into the office every day, even at age 91, and after a lifetime of making and losing money, he decided to give away his fortune.

The biggest benefactor was his alma mater, Oklahoma State University, but he also gave generously to hospitals and other charities, as well as to Republican politicians.

Pickens died at his home in Dallas on Sept.

11. At his funeral, Jerry Jones, the owner of the Dallas Cowboys football team and a longtime friend, marvelled at Pickens’ tenacity. He’d made and lost fortunes, at an age when most people would have retired, Pickens started over again, becoming more successful than ever.

Pickens, he said, was the "best fourth-quarter player that I’d ever seen." And the owner of the Dallas Cowboys, with three Super Bowl championships under his belt, had seen quite a few.

“There was never a moment, down and tired, uniform dirty, nose bloodied...that Boone didn't rise to the occasion, showing his mettle,” Jones said.

What sparked your interest in engineering?

Veronica: My Dad is a mechanic and I have family friends that have worked offshore, so I’ve been interested in engineering since I was little. At high school, one of my teachers had a brilliant career working on offshore platforms as an engineer; she inspired me and many others. She said “If you ever have the opportunity to work offshore, don’t say no!” and it’s something I’ve always remembered.

Madeline: It’s a funny coincidence because like Veronica, my father is an engineer. He’d often tell me about his work as a construction project manager and the different subjects he needed to understand. He said he never had a boring day at work because his days were so varied.

I have the same experience at Halfwave; I am involved in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, purchasing, logistics, workshop assembly, data analysis and reporting. It would be impossible to have a boring day here, as there’s always something new to learn!

How did you get into the industry?

Madeline: I was working part-time in another industry but the schedules for my different jobs clashed and it was becoming unmanageable.

I realised I wanted a change, that I wanted to study again, so I took a pre-class in math and physics. Lots of my classmates planned to work in energy and it sparked my interest to do the same.

Veronica: At school I was really into physics, math and hydraulics so studying mechanical engineering was a sound next step. During my Bachelor's, the professors were great at explaining the different fields you could work in, and energy stood out for me, given that its influence spreads around the world. And today the drive is to create better energy solutions, all of which I find very interesting. Now I’m in this industry, I couldn’t imagine anything else.

What is the role you do now?

Veronica: I started at Halfwave as a graduate, today I am a Mechanical Engineer on our design

team. I am involved in the development, calculations and mechanical design of the tools that we make – as well as analysing pipeline information to make it specific to each client.

I’ve not worked at Halfwave very long, but I can already see it’s very unique in its approach.

Team members are involved in projects from start to finish, which means I’ve already learnt so much more than I expected to while I’ve been here.

Madeline: I joined Halfwave as a Project Engineer, now I’m a Lead Project Engineer where I oversee the entire project from concept and design, through to assembly and operation at client’s sites. Previously I was a field engineer, but I wanted to be more involved in the project planning phase. As Veronica said, Halfwave is quite different; every aspect of a project is delivered in-house, so we can offer both bespoke and “off-the-shelf” solutions. It’s fascinating to get to see a project all the way through.

PEOPLE IN ENERGY

What has been the high point of your career so far?

Veronica: I love seeing drawings that I’ve been working on for months finally being built into real products. We get to follow the progress of the tools being built in our workshop from start to finish, these are then used for inspection at the client’s site. There’s a sense of pride in that and it’s really satisfying seeing something I’ve done “on paper” come to life.

Madeline: My high point is similar. I love going out to client’s sites and seeing the results of all of our hard work being used in reality.

From the workshop to launching the tool and downloading the data – when you see that everything is working properly, it’s a great feeling of achievement. It’s like, our job isn’t just producing drawing after drawing, we’re part of tangible outcomes.

What would be your advice to other women/graduates looking to enter the energy sector?

Veronica: Don’t be afraid to be the only woman in the class or workplace, and don’t be afraid to speak up. There weren’t many women in my class, and while it’s a really exciting field I think hesitation remains about entering a male-dominated industry. But I never regretted it – it has only ever been a positive experience for me.

Madeline: I agree with Veronica and add that my advice is to take the opportunities that come your way, don’t hesitate to jump right in. I was asked if I wanted to work on a project in Peru for three weeks – I didn’t know what it was going to be like, I didn’t know the language or the culture but I took the opportunity anyway and it was the best three weeks of my working life.

I got to experience Peru not just from the “glamorous” tourist perspective, but also from

a work perspective. People I met found it really cool to have a female on-site, and I think that helped inspire a positive image of women working in the industry and make it more acceptable. I was always treated with respect and a lot of people were just interested to find out how I got to where I am today.

Have you had to face any challenges?

Veronica: The biggest challenge for me was the transition from being a student to working full time. It was a real period of growth for me, a personal challenge, but it also helped me learn how important it is to be curious and learn from your mistakes.

Madeline: I experience the same challenges as my male counterparts. In my line of work, it’s often all hands-on deck – if I’m not doing engineering work, I am working on documentation, purchasing or presentations. It’s really important to be adaptable and open to completing whatever task is needed.

Is there anything you would like to see change in the energy industry?

Madeline: As a female working in the oil and gas industry in Norway we’re seen as equals, but I don’t think that it is the same around the world. I’ve worked offshore in the UK, US and Australia and had great experiences, but I have heard some negative stories about countries where women do not enjoy the same equality standard.

Veronica: I’ve never been treated poorly for being female in this industry either; I do get questioned a lot about how unique it is. Norway has a higher percentage of female oil and gas workers than other European countries so while it seems normal here, it’s more unusual elsewhere.

Madeline: What we’d both like to see is for more females to feel confident about pursuing a career in oil and gas. We’ve both had positive experiences working in the industry in Norway, and it would be brilliant to see this level of equality and acceptance globally.

Veronica: We also think it’s important for young women with an interest in STEM to hear first-hand about experiences in the industry, so we were excited to be interviewed and do just that.

From your experience, what are the key skills/attributes to success in a senior role?

Veronica: I believe that to succeed you need to be open to challenges and remain curious.

It’s also important to stay diligent in your work while learning as much as you can along the way. If you are aiming higher, stay humble and respectful of the people around you, both above and below.

I also think having a mentor can be useful – my mentor at Halfwave has more than 30 years’ experience in the industry and is great at sharing his knowledge and experience, preparing us for any challenge that comes our way.

Madeline: I think that’s a great point Veronica raised, being humble and fair is a big part of what I see in senior leaders. And I also think sharing your knowledge with others can be part of your own learning process. Being successful relies on continuing to learn and being a good example for the people around you.

How do you achieve the work/life balance?

Madeline: I think the work/life balance is really good – when I want to relax, I relax – whether it’s with friends and family or biking, and if there is a pressing deadline, I work.

Veronica: We’re both very interested in work, sometimes we’ll do overtime work if urgent tasks come along but also out of interest for the job. I can go home and switch off with my husband but sometimes I actually want to go home and study new interesting subjects. In the evenings I also like to train, be with my husband, family or friends.

Madeline: I actually find working offshore really relaxing! Offshore you only have work on your mind, there are no chores to worry about and all your meals are prepared. In the evening you can go to the gym and enjoy your free time.

Ibama said in a statement that it had been investigating the spill in several beaches in some northeastern states since Sept. 2. Local media showed pictures of sea turtles coated in black tar by the slick.

The spill spans over 1,500 kilometers (932 miles) of Brazil’s northeast coast, affecting wildlife and polluting some of the postcard beaches in one of the nation’s top touristic destinations, such as Praia do Futuro, in the state of Ceara, and Maragogi, in Alagoas state.

Brazil’s state-controlled oil company Petroleo Brasileiro SA said in a statement that it had concluded after a molecular analysis of the oil that the crude spilled was not produced nor sold by the company.

Crude oil is tested before export to make sure it complies with the standards of the refinery it is being shipped to. Crude oil from different fields can be identified according to a series of chemical signatures, including levels of sulphur and nitrogen, acidity and viscosity.

The head of Brazil’s oil agency ANP Decio Oddone said the agency believes the oil could have been spilled by a tanker transporting the crude far from the Brazilian coast, but added this possibility has not yet been confirmed yet. An ANP statement said there were no reports of spills by any operator of oil drilling rigs in the country.

Ibama said that beaches in the states of Rio Grande do Norte, Maranhao, Ceara, Paraiba, Pernambuco, Alagoas and Sergipe were affected.

Petrobras, as the state oil company is known, said in a statement that even though it was not involved in the spill it was contributing to the clean-up efforts, with some 100 Petrobras employees helping clean the beaches.

While global offshore exploration activity has been flat year-to-date, the situation has been far more buoyant on the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS), where the number of wells drilled could challenge all-time high levels by the end of the year.

A new gas field with 13,000 billion cubic feet of recoverable reserve and 385 million barrels of condensate, valued at $40 billion, has been discovered in Fars province, southern Iran.

Rystad Energy expects that this high activity level will be sustained through the winter season and into 2020. Around 30 to 50 exploration wells will be drilled per year towards 2023.

“Our preliminary analysis shows that a total of 130 wells are likely to be drilled this year – a 16% increase compared to 2018. The increased activity this year relates primarily to an uptick in exploration drilling, a segment that will see around 55 wells completed,” says Eivind Drabløs, an analyst on Rystad Energy’s offshore rig team.

Subsea development wells are forecast to experience a growth spurt beginning in 2020 and lasting several years. Meanwhile, development wells associated with wellhead platforms – so-called dry wells – will see a flatter forward trend.

While offshore drilling share prices have fallen sharply over the past year, rig rates and utilisation rates are on the rise.

“The offshore rig market is propelled by the increased sanctioning of greenfield projects, coupled with a substantial amount of brownfield work aimed at maintaining legacy production,” said Oddmund Føre, head of the offshore rig team. “Some E&P companies are even increasing exploration efforts in a quest to replace declining reserves, resulting in a ‘trickle-down’ effect that is driving up rig counts and day rates.”

The field, called “Eram”, is located in southern Fars province, Reza Dehqan, the National Iranian Oil Company’s deputy director for development and engineering affairs said, IRNA reported on Sunday.

The gas recovered from the field is planned to be delivered to Parsian Gas Refinery in the province due to its close proximity to the field, he noted.

Referring to the numerous oil and gas field discoveries since the 1979 revolution, Dehqan said that 75 percent of the country’s gas reserves as well as 20 percent of its oil reserves have been discovered in the past 40 years.

“With 159 billion barrels of crude oil reserves and 34 billion cubic meters of gas reserves, Iran has the world's second-largest gas reserves and also the world’s fourth-largest oil reserves,” he said.

The official noted that Iran is currently self-sufficient in oil and gas exploration and all the country’s projects in this area are being carried out by domestic companies.

Earlier this week, Saleh Hendi, NIOC’s director for exploration, had announced that the company has had very good achievements in the field of oil and gas exploration so that now Iran ranks first in terms of oil and gas reserves.

The official also said that plans were underway for beginning new exploration operations in the northeast of the country.

USA - Crude exports set to double by 2022 US crude exports could grow from current levels of 2.9 million barrels per day (bpd) to nearly 6 million bpd by 2022, according to a new forecast from Rystad Energy.

With US production expected to increase by 1.2 million bpd year-over-year (y/y) in 2020, and with domestic refineries already maxing out capacity to absorb shale growth, Rystad Energy expects exports to balloon and reach 4.7 million bpd by the end of 2020 and nearly 6 million bpd by the end of 2022.

“Crude exports will grow on the back of new infrastructure coming online in Corpus Christi, Texas, and as international crude buyers ramp up efforts to diversify their import sources after the attacks on oil facilities in Saudi Arabia and overall rising tensions in the Middle East,” says Paola Rodriguez-Masiu, a senior analyst on Rystad Energy’s oil market team.

Australian independent oil and gas firm Karoon Energy, through its wholly-owned subsidiary Karoon Petróleo e Gás Ltda (KPG), has signed a senior secured term loan facility of up to $275m, fully underwritten by ING Bank, Singapore Branch.

Karoon said that it intends to use the facility as part of the funding package for the acquisition of a 100% operating interest in the Baúna oil field in the Santos Basin, offshore Brazil.

The syndicated facility agreement is expected to offer an option to provide additional funding for the tie-in development of the Patola oil discovery, and the option is subject to final lender approval following Patola reserve certification, an approved updated bank model and project sanction.

In addition, the company intends to complete the documentation and regulatory approvals prior to the completion of the Baúna acquisition, which is expected to be completed during the first quarter of the calendar year 2020.

In June 2019, Karoon executed a binding sale and purchase agreement to acquire a 100% operating interest in the Baúna field for a consideration of $665m.

The Baúnafield contains two producing oil reservoirs, Baúna and Piracaba, where both tied back to the leased floating production, storage and offloading facility (FPSO) Cidade de Itajai, and the existing undeveloped Patola discovery.

The field is currently producing light sweet crude at a rate of approximately 20Mbopd, and the acquisition would provide material operational and logistical synergies for the potential development of Karoon’s existing southern Santos Basin assets, Neon and Goiá.

Oil production at one of the world’s largest offshore oil fields, Kashagan in Kazakhstan, has dropped by 80,000 barrels per day since early October because of unplanned maintenance, Kazakhstan’s energy ministry told Reuters.

Between October 6 and October 16, production at Kashagan was down to 294,000 bpd on average, from 365,000 bpd at the beginning of this month, industry sources told Reuters. The reason for the unplanned maintenance was a loss of pressure at one compressor, which necessitated works to be carried out. The energy ministry confirmed that production at Kashagan had lost up to 80,000 bpd over the past ten days.

The unplanned maintenance works were completed on Tuesday, and work is ongoing at the oil field to restore production up to 395,000 bpd 400,000 bpd, the ministry told Reuters.

Oil production at Kashagan started in 2016, and is around 400,000 bpd, making the Kazakh field one of the largest offshore oil fields in the world in terms of production.

AUSTRALIA - Karoon secures $275m loan facility to complete acquisition of Baúna oil field

US crude exports slowed significantly in the third quarter of 2019 after reaching a record level of nearly 3.2 million bpd in June 2019. This recent slowdown related in part to the narrowing of the Brent-WTI price spread, along with headwinds from the 5% tariff imposed on US crude by China, the third-largest buyer of American crude year to date. However, Rystad Energy forecasts that crude exports will rebound to an unprecedented 3.7 million bpd during the fourth-quarter of 2019 before climbing to even higher levels.

“This is a significant downgrade for the Middle East’s biggest and most important economy, as well as a warning to Riyadh that it needs to accelerate its work to diversify the Saudi economy away from its dependence on oil exports.

Stephan Gabriel Haufe said the four Shell platforms contain about 11,000 metric tons (12,125 tons) of crude oil. They are not covered by international rules on the safe dismantling of such old oil platforms.

“The primary factor behind the downward revision of Saudi Arabia’s growth forecast was weaker oil GDP. While non-oil growth is expected to strengthen in 2019 on higher government spending, oil GDP in Saudi Arabia is in decline as a result of the extension of the Opec+ oil production agreement and a generally weak global oil market.

Haufe said "Germany considers it absolutely unacceptable that this amount of crude oil should remain in these structures."

CONTRACTS Shell awards gas export infrastructure contract offshore Aberdeen Subsea 7 announced the award of a sizeable contract by Shell for the Pierce depressurisation project, located approximately 160 miles offshore, east of Aberdeen.

The contract scope involves the engineering, procurement, construction, transportation and installation of a 30km gas export pipeline, a gas export riser and associated subsea infrastructure, for tie-ins at the Haewene Brim FPSO. Project management and detailed engineering has commenced at Subsea 7’s office in Aberdeen, with offshore activities scheduled for 2020 and 2021.

Dolphin Drilling announces contract with Shell prospect in the UK’s Central North Sea. The Borgland Dolphin is believed to have set a new standard for the fastest rig turnaround when it was taken from smart stacking to operational mode in just 70 days for the i3 Energy awards.

Global contractor Dolphin Drilling has secured further work for its Borgland Dolphin semi-submersible drilling rig to start in early 2020.

The company has won a contract with AS Norske Shell in Norway to provide rig support for the drilling and completion of a gas producer well on the Knarr field.

The work will commence in February following the completion of two other projects for the rig. Dolphin Drilling recently announced the Borgland Dolphin had secured contracts with i3 Energy for drilling operations on firstly the Liberator oilfield and then the Serenity

For the Shell contract, Dolphin Drilling will be working under the operator’s One Team system with integrated drilling and completions providers in a water depth of approximately 450 metres on the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS).

Dolphin Drilling Chief Executive Officer Bjørnar Iversen said: “We appreciate the trust Shell has placed in us by commissioning the Borgland Dolphin for this project. Shell is a strategic client for us and we look forward to a long-term relationship with the company.

This is proof Dolphin Drilling and its assets are capable of working with anyone.

The fifth-generation drilling and ram rig was completely rebuilt in 1999, part of the deepwater, harsh environment drilling specialist’s fleet of assets, most of which have been recently refurbished to incorporate the latest technology. The Borgland Dolphin also rates as one of the “greenest” mobile drilling units in the North Sea. Weatherford wins multiyear contracts in Iraq Weatherford International has been awarded two fully integrated rig contracts and one well services (through-tubing intervention) contract with a multinational operator in one of the world's largest proven oil fields located in Iraq.

Saipem awarded new offshore E&C contracts by BP Saipem, in consortium with Boshelf LLC and STAR GULF FZCO, has recently been awarded three new contracts by BP for the development of the Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli oil and gas (ACG) field offshore Azerbaijan.

Saipem has been a key contractor in this field since the 1990s. Located in the Caspian Sea at approximately 120 km from the coast of Azerbaijan, the field extends over an area of more than 4000 km2 and is one of the largest of its kind in the world.

Specifically, two contracts are for pipeline design, pipelay and related activities, while the third is for transportation and installation of four

ating location, as one example. A recent mapping mandate we conducted for an international midcap player illustrated this in relation to reservoir engineering demographics; those possessing over 20 years of experience contributed to just 19% of the talent pool. Whilst a dearth in this range was expected due to historic implications, we found this has been further impacted by a diminishing requirement for tenured professionals, as opposed to simply an availability issue. More junior engineers are now in higher demand due to the move towards unconventionals and an uptick in the sophistication of technology in subsurface applications.

Many of the skills now valued are a relatively untested composition in the industry and as a result, we have increasingly worked with our clients to target synergistic sectors including construction, defense and mining, as well as extending the reach of assignments to identify international candidates to gain a comprehensive picture of caliber and availability outside the confines of traditional avenues.

The truth is that no silver bullet exists when it comes to succession planning in this new environment; companies must work to stay ahead of the curve in terms of identifying the talent profile required for the future; assessing both internal and external options to address any overlap and potential gaps.

She oversaw the completion of Shell’s first floating LNG project, Prelude, which finally shipped its first LNG cargo after overcoming a number of start-up problems. Prior to joining Shell, Zoe was the President and Chief Executive Officer of Iron Ore Company of Canada for almost five years. She has also held a number of senior roles with Rio Tinto including as President for their Brazil business and as Executive Advisor to the Chief Executive Officer.

Fugro, the Dutch multinational geo-data specialist, has appointed Erik-Jan Bijvank as Group Director for Europe and Africa.

This appointment completes Fugro’s new executive leadership team structure consisting of the Board of Management, four regional group directors and several functional group directors.

Erik-Jan joins from Stork, a Fluor company after a tenure of over 20 years. Erik-Jan was most recently Regional Vice President of Stork International, where he focused on developing and implementing a growth strategy for the Stork brands in the UK, the Middle East, Central Asia, Australia and New Zealand. He has held numerous senior regional and business line roles with the business from Stork’s regional headquarters in Aberdeen and in Utrecht.

Stefan will serve as the procurement and supply chain specialist for Carlyle’s investments. Prior to Carlyle, served as senior vice president of strategic sourcing and procurement at healthcare services company Cardinal Health where he was accountable for Cardinal's $10 billion Medical Device spend. He also spent 19 years at Whirlpool in various leadership roles during which he managed teams in China, Brazil, Sweden and Italy.

Shell has promoted its current Australia Chairman, Zoe Yujnovich, to the role of Executive Vice President for conventional oil and gas where she will be responsible for delivering growth across 18 countries including Kazakhstan, Nigeria, Oman, the UK and Iraq. In her new role, Zoe will be based in the group’s headquarters in The Hague and will report to Shell’s Upstream Director. The chief role in Australia will now be occupied by Tony Nunan who currently leads Shell’s operations in Eastern Australia.

Noble Midstream Appoints Christensen as Chief Financial Officer Noble Midstream Partners announced that Thomas Christensen has been appointed Chief Financial Officer. This role will see him lead the business’s finance, accounting, information technology and business development teams.

He will also continue to serve as Principal Accounting Officer. Thomas joined Noble Energy upon its acquisition of Rosetta Resources in July 2015. While at Rosetta, he served in a number of senior finance roles including Assistant Controller and Financial Reporting Manager.

Ensuring Insurance Coverage Oil and gas projects come with a significant price tag and the contracts relating to procurement and construction for these projects include a wide spectrum of risks.

The insurance provisions of each contract are the common thread that pulls these costs and risks together and ensures that the right levels of insurance and responsibility for obtaining such insurance are clearly identified from the outset.

The insurance requirements of a contract will be fixed by reference to the risks underlying the project but the risks themselves should not be linked directly to the insurance coverage.

For example, the contract should identify the minimum levels of insurance that require to be obtained but it should be clear that those levels are not intended to limit the amounts that can be recovered for the relevant risk should a breach or incident occur. It should also be clear that liability extends beyond insurable limits and any limits on insurance do not relieve the contractual obligations to be liable for the insured risk. It is widely viewed as best drafting practice to add explicit language to the contract to express this intent.

In broad terms, the insurance that should be required under the contract can be characterised by three features.

Firstly, there will be generic insurance requirements that are seen across all forms of project-related contracts. This will include public liability and employer’s liability and any other minimum insurance that are required to be obtained at law. These are matters where it is already clear with whom the related risk lies in light of the legal requirements to hold such insurances.

This allows third parties to benefit from the policy and receive pay-outs directly but leaves the contractor as the only named party on the policy capable of raising claims.

Other insurances required will be project-specific or service-specific - such as vessel insurance, product liability or vehicle insurance. These will be dependent on the work being carried out or the items being supplied.

A waiver of subrogation has become almost standard in commercial insurance policies relating to oil and gas projects but the contract should still state that it is required for completeness, including provision for the insurer to be notified that it is relevant to the project considered covered by the insurance.

The waiver is intended to prevent the insurance company from seeking to reclaim the amount paid out to the insured from any third party, which typically would be the other party to the contract.

Lastly, consideration should be given to supply of goods and/or services that may have a cross-border or multi-jurisdictional element as insurance requirements will likely vary from location to location.

Once the relevant insurances have been identified, it is important to also ensure that the relevant supporting provisions highlight how that insurance is to be provided, the endorsements required to the insurance and any other principles or carve-outs that may be required.

Typically, the party obtaining the insurance should be liable for deductibles (the excess) although there may be circumstances where this can be varied. For example, it is usually more cost-effective for the company to obtain construction-all-risks (CAR) insurance so it may accept the obligation to do so but pass on the cost and liability for deductibles to the contractor.

Where the contractor is obtaining insurances required for the project this should be endorsed with (i) inclusion of the company (and any relevant affiliates) as additional insureds and (ii) a waiver of subrogation from the insurer.

Other relevant insurance principles that should be addressed in the contract terms include back-back coverage required from sub-contractors, use of a solvent and reputable insurer and provision of copies of the policies and any renewals or amendments thereto as evidence of the obtaining and maintaining of the required insurances.

Insurance provisions in contracts can occasionally be overlooked if at first review they appear to cover the basic points. However, every project will ultimately be different and the right blend of insurance coverage against assessed risks can provide additional comfort to the parties that there is appropriate protection in place. Furthermore, addressing the additional considerations such as endorsements, waivers and relevant principles will offer clarity on how that protection is to be obtained and how it will apply should the worst happen.

Aberdeen FC has long prided itself in being a community club; a family club; a club steeped in tradition.

Recently, alongside partner charity Aberdeen FC Community Trust, AFC have been named ‘Best Professional Football Club’ in the prestigious 2019 UEFA Grassroots Awards.

In a collaboration with the Scottish FA, the club has developed a model of best practice nationally with shared goals and resources, in a bid to develop a collective vision of increasing football participation in the region.

The result is this recognition from UEFA as the ‘Best Professional Club’ is testament to the partnership working ethos within our City and region.

The UEFA Best Professional Football Club prize rewards outstanding grassroots work by a professional club, in particular for promoting a holistic approach to grassroots football and providing opportunities for a wide range of participants.

Aberdeen FC Community Trust (AFCCT), engages with over 20,200 people across some 227,700 participations in projects focusing on three main themes: football for life, education and healthy communities. The work stretches across a large geographical area, which accounts for around 25% or the entire landmass of Scotland, and approximately 10% of the population.

Last year in partnership with UEFA and the Scottish FA, a report was commissioned to uncover the “unique tangible evidence” that participation in our national game has on the city and region’s economic, social and health benefits.

The report, published in November 2018, determined that grassroot football throughout Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire has a value of £97m to society. Indeed for every £1 invested into AFCCT and football participation in the northeast, AFCCT deliver a £10 cumulative return in conjunction with partners.

The Impact Report recently published by the trust looks through the lens of 4 national bodies via a ‘Contribution Analysis’, to demonstrate what the Club and Trust are contributing across various national agendas, and what these outcomes look like at a local level.

There are exciting plans for growth over the next 5 years including expanding the Children’s & Education Services, using the ‘hub’ at Cormack Park to build community capacity and exploring further innovative Club Partnerships; such as the collaboration with Inverurie Loco Works FC, and the scaling of MINDSET, the mental wellbeing programme in partnership with Grassroot Soccer.

The award from UEFA as the Best Professional Club is testament to the partnership working within the region, this would not have been achieved without you, and both Aberdeen FC and Aberdeen FC Community Trust are delighted to share this success with you!
