ADM announces ambitious sustainability commitments

ADM has recently announced a new plan to reduce its absolute greenhouse gas emissions by 25% and its energy intensity by 15% by 2035. “Every single day, ADM is focused on keeping its employees healthy and safe while simultaneously ensuring we are continuing to support the world’s food supply,� said Chairman and CEO Juan Luciano. “At the same time, we believe

it remains vitally important that we continue to plan for the future and remain good longterm stewards of our company and our planet. We know that the health of our natural resources is critical to our future. Consumers around the world know it as well, and they are making it clear that they expect their food and drink to come from sustainable ingredients, produced by

companies that share their values. “We care deeply about our partners, our customers, our employees, our shareholders, and the planet, and that is why we are setting these ambitious emissions and energy goals for ourselves. Our future will be stronger for these goals.�

The new goals follow on ADM’s original “15x20� plan, unveiled in 2011, in which the company committed to per-unit

Introducing Jude’s vegan oat-based ice cream Jude’s, the independent British family run brand, has been dedicated to crafting the world’s tastiest treats since 2002. This October they are expanding their range with the introduction of two new vegan oat-based ice creams, to ensure everyone can enjoy Jude’s. Jude’s new vegan range caters to those looking to reduce their environmental footprint. A study conducted by the University of Oxford found that out of the milk alternatives, oat milk has one of the lowest environmental impacts

(in terms of emissions, land use and water use) making it the perfect base for the new range.

Whitakers donate thousands of chocolates to support the NHS

Love Cocoa, the British chocolate brand created by James Cadbury has launched two luxury eggs including a vegan-friendly option, all handmade here in Great Britain.

These products are palm oil free with 100% recyclable packaging and plastic free and will be available via Ocado from March, PDUNLQJ WKH EUDQGȢV ˋUVW IRUD\ into the grocery market.

For every Love Cocoa product sold, the brand has pledged to plant a tree.

Schubert’s reports strong annual growth for 2019

Gerhard Schubert has reported a continued pattern of annual growth, with 2019 revenues up 5.3% to €289 million. The business reported that its order intake in 2019 also grew disproportionately well by 14.5% compared to the previous year, with the group now employing a total of 1,400 staff.

In addition, the business is investing €30 million in construction that began in Autumn 2019 with the laying of the adjacent state road. By 2023, the site will be expanded with a new main access road and DGGLWLRQDO DVVHPEO\ DQG RIˋFH space in the north to create space for further growth.

Ulma packaging’s plans for plastics tax Ulma Packaging UK has welcomed measures put forward by government to tax plastic packaging that is less than 30% recyclable.

FDF collaborations offer job ‘lifelines’ during virus crisis The Food and Drink Federation (FDF) has announced a new 16-week partnerships with job recruitment apps, Placed and SonicJobs.

he COVID-19 crisis continues to take its toll on many sectors, including the confectionery and bakery market segments, resulting in thousands of workers facing potential redundancy or placed on the Government’s furlough system. ZOE DEIGHTON-SMYTHE: Thank you for joining me today Markus. I was wondering if you could start off by explaining the thought process behind the new launching of the CHS high-performance packaging machine? What made you decide on nine different folding types in one?

MARKUS RUSTLER: Of course. It has been a continuous discussion over the last years that the modular design of packaging equipment is getting more and more essential due to shorter product life cycles and of course, the increased amount of seasonal production. This is why we started to design and build modular machines at least 10 years ago and the new CHS represents the steps towards this goal, because it really unites all used wrapping styles for chocolate articles in today’s industry into one machine.

ZDS: And so similarly, could you describe the thought process behind the BLM high-speed cartoning system and what makes this such a unique piece of machinery?

MR: The BLM involved a different thinking approach – what we are seeing in today’s market and with our customers, is an increased interest in having a one-stop supplier in a different process step and in this case, it is packaging. So now, what we have been doing for the last 10 to 15 years is working with other companies to offer turnkey solutions of primary packaging and secondary packaging.

Unfortunately, over the last years, we noticed that some suppliers were unable to match the speed of our primary wrappers. Hence, we came up with our own approach Č&#x; Ë‹QGLQJ GHVLJQLQJ DQG EXLOGLQJ D VHFRQG VWDJH packaging/cartoning machine that can keep up with this speed.

ZDS: What do you hope the CHS and the BLM will deliver to the confectionery market?

MR: With the CHS, we hope to deliver high-speed FRQYHQLHQFH ZKLFK VWLOO FRPELQHV DOO WKH EHQHˋWV from easy change over between product geometry and wrapping styles and for the BLM, we hope it can match with confectionery primary wrappers. The BLM is highly adaptable – it can be linked to various other wrapping equipment and so it is very suitable for confectionery production.

ZDS: What type of challenges arise when developing new packaging machines and how do you overcome them?

MR: There will always be standard challenges when delivering these types of modular machines, assuring WKDW WKH VSHHG DQG ËŒH[LELOLW\ LV FRQFHLYDEOH DQG SUDFWLFDO Fortunately, we rely on the brilliant ideas of the expert engineers, which we have here in house, and then of course the request from customers telling us which GLUHFWLRQ ZH VKRXOG IRFXV RQ DQG LQ WKH HQG Ë‹QGLQJ D JRRG FRQFHSW WKDW EULQJV EHQHË‹WV WR WKH LQGXVWU\ DQG WR the customers.

ZDS: Other than the new CHS packaging machine and BLM cartoner – which exhibit/machine are you most excited to display at next year’s Interpack?

MR: I think all of them! Every one of them is a good of H[SHUW HQJLQHHULQJ HIˋFLHQWO\ EHQHˋWLQJ RXU FXVWRPHUV Of course, it’s always nice to show completely new things and aside from the CHS and BLM, we are very proud of the U1-DCW+F3, which is a speed-increased (double the speed) version of our U1-F1, dedicated to very special products such as chewy candies and gum products.

Another interesting exhibit that will most likely be shown at Interpack 2021, is our complete line of soup cubes which comprises of compressed primary upper machinery and the BLM cartoner, showing a high-speed operation of soup products.

MR: We have quite a good overview of what is happening on the market – but other than machinery, we would like to see different approaches and ideas to digitalisation in the industry. You see that in many different sectors now-a-days and I’m sure we’ll see a lot more next year than we could have seen this year – Interpack has one more year of development now, which can be seen as a positive.

MR: Sustainable packaging is such a huge topic at the moment and of course an important trend. Paper-based packaging is also highly-considerable; however, I feel it holds a bit of a question mark around it. . In case you put coatings on the material you face an issue with recyclability and or dissolvability.

At Theegarten, we are constantly looking at sustainable packaging alternatives and are working closely with some of the biggest packaging material suppliers and various research departments. These departments can think of new, innovative ideas and there are testing processes that we are working with quite intensively at the moment - this can only work if we all work together, of course.

ZDS: Absolutely, and I suppose this is a trend that you might hope to see at next year’s Interpack?

The Cocoa Cartel and the Coronavirus: what will be the market impact?

n the summer of 2019, Ghana and the Ivory Coast HVWDEOLVKHG D FDUWHO WR WU\ WR Ë‹[ the price of cocoa at $2600 per ton. Initially prices dropped below $2200, before rising to $2900 in February of 2020, seeming to indicate some success for the cartel.

A success achieved just as the coronavirus attacked the world’s economies, immediately sending cocoa prices back to $2200.

However, in recent days, cocoa prices have crept back up to $2400, which may be due to fears that the coronavirus will destroy the economies of Africa the worst, which could include Ghana and the Ivory Coast. If so, their economies could be so impacted that supplies RI FRFRD GURS VLJQLË‹FDQWO\ GULYLQJ up prices in a perverse way. Which could be an opportunity, in my opinion, for South American

farmers, as the main cocoa countries there, led by Colombia, have the coronavirus better controlled than Africa. In this article, we provide data for your analysis.

For decades, the price of cocoa has averaged around $2400 per metric ton, with a high in the late 1970s of about $4600, to a low of about $800 in 2000, and averaged about $2400 for much of 2019. This is a volatile market, as compared to the bigger component in chocolate and confections - sugar, which H[FHSW IRU WKH 0D\ WR 0D\ 2014 time period, was more stable, staying close to an average price of DURXQG SRXQG $V UHˌHFWHG LQ world obesity and diabetes rates, it is clear that there is always plenty of sugar available at reasonable prices. But for cocoa – powder and liquor – not so reasonable prices, especially for cocoa farmers. >

At sub-$3000/ton prices, it is hard for cocoa farmers around the world to earn enough money for to have their families live above a sustenance level. 80% of cocoa farmers, or four million people and their families, live on less than $3 a day, according to World %DQN VWDWLVWLFV 0XFK OLNH SHRSOH in developed countries, wages are stagnant while the cost of living rises.

In my opinion, many of the sustainability panels at leading organisations in the sector have achieved little but promises farmers still receive not much more than $3 per day. A Financial Times article has a telling statistic: Ghana supplies about 20% of all cocoa beans used globally earning about $2 billion/ year, which is just 2% of the

chocolate industry’s annual sales of $100 billion/year.

In an interesting development, in June of 2019, Ivory Coast and Ghana announced that they are forming a cocoa cartel to try to force up the price of cocoa for their countries’ farmers. They are in a position to do so, since the two countries product more than 60% of the world’s cocoa. This is similar to the OPEC+ countries of Russia, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, UAE and Kuwait producing about 50% of the world’s oil.

The countries pledged not to sell cocoa for less than $2600/ton for the harvest starting in October 2020.

They want to impose a premium of $400 per ton, which they label the “living income differential�, to increase farm gate prices for the farmers, providing them with more income for their families. Given

that the two countries sell about 3 million metric tons, the premium LV HTXLYDOHQW WR D WD[ RI DERXW billion (as a contrast, some of the biggest producers are spending about $50 million on their cocoa sustainability efforts).

The plan is that when cocoa prices are low, the farmers obtain more income, but when cocoa prices are high, the premium is set aside in a commodity-price support fund to be withdrawn from when prices later drop.

It is hard to tell what the impact of this announcement has been. At the time of the announcement in June, cocoa was going for about $2500/ ton, but dropped to $2130 in August then back to $2500 in September, with a peak of near $2800 in November and $2900 in February 2020. The problem for the countries is that the cocoa prices are pushed and pulled by many forces. If they succeed in raising prices, that could attract more farmers generating more supply, sending down prices.

Additionally, physical cocoa prices are much affected by commodities traders in international markets who couldn’t care less about the needs of cocoa farmers, unlike the chocolate companies with their sustainability programs. The announcement of the cartel has attracted some public, but cautious, support from the big players which also have two active social responsibility programs in the chocolate industry.

The problem for Africa is that WKH PDMRULW\ RI WKH SURË‹WV ZLWK cacao are made from processing and production activities after the UDZ FRFRD LV H[SRUWHG 3HRSOH SRLQW to Indonesia, where in the 2010s, H[SRUWV RI FRFRD EHDQV GURSSHG IURP RI FRFRD H[SRUWV WR while investments made by the FRXQWU\ OHG WR JUHDWHU H[SRUWV RI cocoa butter, paste and powder.

In February 2020, the market was looking good for cocoa, as the price rose to a high in the mid$2900s, until the coronavirus hit the world’s economies, sending all commodities down, including cocoa, which from mid-February to 0LG 0DUFK GURSSHG WR DERXW $2240. An interactive chart of cocoa price data is available online.1 But again, this could have little to do with the cocoa cartel, and much to do with central banks. Interestingly, an article on the negative impact of the coronavirus on the economy in Ghana doesn’t talk about the cocoa sector. 3 I believe this could create an opportunity for the cocoa farmers of South America and other regions around the world. Some of the South American cocoa countries, such as Colombia, are making good progress on controlling the virus, and have some of the lowest death rates in the world. Additionally, South American farmers are much less of a cocoa monoculture than Africa. ased on its modular machine concept, Schubert will be demonstrating new answers to the increasing digitalisation of machine and robot functions as a live show at its stand. The packaging group will also be demonstrating how 3D printing can lead to completely different packaging processes that create smaller batch sizes.

Schubert currently incorporates modular design into its TLM systems, which have had a lot of attention in order to improve for 2020. The big news from Schubert this time around is the release of its answer to the digitalisation of the marketplace - the cobot.

Cobots – the next level of automation There are more than a million industrial robots around the world today, over half of which are located in Japan.* However Schubert looks to change this with cooperative robots, which work without a safety cage and involve packaging processes of small batch sizes. Schubert is developing a comprehensive system for its new cobot modules including an intelligent control system, feed belts and even a vision system that allows it to perceive its environment- sort of like a person.

The cobot’s are small too, each one requires no more than the space needed for a small cow! It is known that workers on

For example, they can pick up jumbled products without prior separation and place them onto a conveyor.

There’s no worry about safety too, for example if a worker approaches the cobot, it initially slows down and stops completely. So, to take a look at Shubert’s latest AI technology, a live exhibition will be on show at Interpack.

Big in Output, Small in Size 6DYLQJ RQ IDFWRU\ ËŒRRU VSDFH FDQ be an important step to improving productivity, smaller machines can free up factory space meaning businesses can increase their production without having to

build more. And so, Schubert’s specialised T4 and T5 robots have been designed with this in mind- great things come in small packages. Both new machines complement the F4 robot, which is used in picker lines.

The design of the new pick & place robots is based on the delta robot type. Their compact rectangular working area makes them perform in the smallest of

spaces. For example, up to six of the new four-axis T4 robots can work simultaneously in a single TLM frame. The T5 variant offers a different option for machine SURFHVVHV ,W KDV D Ë‹IWK D[LV ZLWK which products can be pivoted and tilted. Virtual parts warehouse with 3D printing on demand 3D printing is revolutionising both machines and warehousing, as electronic design data can be retrieved “on demand� in seconds anywhere in the world. Schubert is now making this access possible – with the new part streaming platform from Schubert Additive Solutions GmbH. Schubert told Kennedy’s that the virtual warehouse is fast, reliable and economical, and represents a major VWHS WRZDUGV ˌH[LEOH SURGXFWLRQ The digitally stored parts are available everywhere, eliminating long wait and delivery times. 2020 TECHNOLOGY & INNOVATION SHOWCASE Cama will present a delta-robot-equipped loading unit, running – in real time – alongside its own digital twin. This will highlight how product ˌRZV FDQ EH VLPXODWHG DQG WKHQ LQWHJUDWHG LQWR other upstream machines, also running in a virtual environment.

The Augmented reality (AR) is another showcase technology at the event, with two machines highlighting the advancements in technology: one will display a product-changeover cycle and the other will demonstrate maintenance.

In both cases, augmented reality removes the need for line operators to have intimate knowledge of the machines; instead, overlaid 3D renders allow them to perform complex tasks. Cama’s AR solution can also be used for training, where it aims to give operators concise and realistic experience of the machine before it has even left the Cama factory.

Cama also announces that it is prioritising an edge computing approach. Put simply, this means running fewer processes in the cloud and moving them closer to local paces, such as a machine’s in-built computer. Massimo Monguzzi states that “This will offer an additional layer between the

hether the term is used to describe cars, furniture or confectionery machines, the picture it paints can be a rather unattractive one. However, the reality can sometimes be very different. If we were to change the term “second-hand” to “lightly used” or “almost new” then the picture starts to change immediately.

Although the Mogul 660 can optionally be operated with an external cyclone screener, this is not necessary in standard version due to the proven de-powdering with separating and cleaning sieves within the plant. Walterwerkfrom boats to biscuits Back in 1935, a German man by the name of Professor Hellmuth Walter founded Walterwerk in Kiel, a prosperous city located on the shores of the Baltic sea at the northern tip of Germany.

T

he city of Kiel has always had a strong engineering presence with some of the most advanced boats and vessels in the world being designed there. In fact, Hellmuth Walter himself was the man behind several incredible engines that propelled colossal planes and submarines in the skies above and waters below.

After having set an example in the aeronautical industry, Prof Walter decided to make wafer baking machines.

And so, the proud German business released its JUPITER plants to the rest of the world, a sugar cone baking machine that hit the market in 1958.

It is machines like this that Walterwerk Kiel is still renown

for today, where 100% of the manufacturing process takes place in Kiel, the same city the company was founded in some 85 years ago.

Last month, Uwe S. Schroeder, General Manager at Walterwerk Kiel told Kennedy’s that “concentrating all know-how in one place has many advantages like short ways, quick reaction times and technicians who know the machines right from the beginning.”

In addition, when help is needed the technicians of WALTER use remote maintenance to support their customers. Installing a modem (a device that transmits data) in the machines makes it possible to connect employees with

WALTER seeks to continue its rich innovative history and has some news to announce for next year’s Interpack. The company has recently developed a bunch of smart digital features enabling the business to keep up with the

“We put much effort in our new digital service package which we will present at the exhibition,” explains Uwe S. Schroeder. “We want to show how easily our customers can receive help from WALTER no matter where they are.”

Modernisation in technology is all about using new technology to eliminate the concept of distance in order to bring people together while increasing productivity. Small businesses with limited staff and resources may struggle to build a mobile app. Our research investigates how small businesses can build their own mobile apps and what resources they can use, after the launch of the new Kennedy’s Confection Application to the app store last month – Kennedy’s Events Manager, Lorna Kennedy reports.

obile apps are often expensive and time-intensive to create, as we have learnt here at Kennedy’s. We set out with the mammoth task of creating a digital experience for our readers in November last year and decided to build an IOS and Web application, to essentially replace our outdated websites, and possibly in the future, our printed magazines.

With there being over 728 million iPhones around the globe, the apple app store was GHË‹QLWHO\ RXU EHVW EHW 0RELOH DSSV RIIHU VLJQLË‹FDQW EHQHË‹WV but only if the app is developed well and for strategic reasons.

Recently, market data research agency, Clutch, surveyed more than 350 small business owners to determine how and why small businesses create mobile apps, and the Kennedy’s team have evaluated this research along with other studies to explain the best way to go about creating an app for your company.

Findings from the Clutch manifest Part of this survey found that 58% of small businesses currently do not have a mobile app1 and we predict this is largely due to costs and obstacles involved in the development stage‌ Small business app growth is stagnant despite projected growth. This shows that some small businesses may see an opportunity for an app but can’t overcome the obstacles required to build one. If you are thinking about creating your own mobile app for your business, we can advise ways that you can overcome some of the obstacles that will be presented to you, and the most cost-effective way you can do this.

Firstly, small businesses must clearly outline their goals and metrics for a mobile app before launching one. Building an app purely to outpace competitors, or simply because it looks cool, is a recipe for disaster. >>

For example, it could be used to help market your products and attract new customers.
