President’s Message

What is new this year, and certainly adds electricity to our athletic competition is the LED lighting for our state-of-the-art competition field. When completed, and soon, it will make every Kennedy athletic season one filled with exciting games “under the lights.”

We are also thankful to the Class of 2017 for their gift of a new concession stand and observation deck. We as a school are rapidly on the way to making these planned additions an exciting reality before the close of this fall athletic season – stay tuned!

But what is most important about our school,and always has been, is the opportunity to form young men and women in the faith and values of the gospel of Jesus Christ. “Character is King” someone once said, and here at Kennedy no truer words could ever be said.

So, go Kennedy and go Gaels!

Dear Friend of Kennedy Catholic, There has never been a better time to be a Gael! Why do I say that? Because those words have never rung truer than now in our school’s history – something I say with great pride in our school and confidence in its future.

Take for example our facilities - just as beautiful now as they were 50 years ago. Only now those same classrooms have LED lighting and SMART Board technology, with the same bucolic view to distract our students now as they did then.

And speaking of our students, look where they come from. They hail from Dutchess, Putnam, Westchester, Fairfield, Bronx, and Manhattan counties collectively – 71 zip codes if you include our own! And why do they come, because we have lived up to our motto: A Catholic Education That’s Worth The Trip.

And those who traveled to us in the graduating class of 2017, what did they accomplish? Nothing less than a record-breaking 39.4 million dollars in scholarships to some of the best colleges and universities in the country. Just peruse the pages of this volume of the Gael and see for yourself.

Making Connections Navigating the Kennedy Event Calendar

Fred Compton is the Director of Advancement for Kennedy Catholic High School and if that makes him sound like a drum major leading a parade, there are certainly way worse metaphors for what he does.

“Advancement” at Kennedy is an umbrella term that feels like it includes just about everything except academics and sports.

Fundraising, the Golf Classic, the President’s Dinner, reunions, the Auction, public relations, marketing, press relations, alumni relations, social media – anything that moves the needle and “gets the word out” is advancement.

On this particular day, Compton is working to get the word out about the annual Golf Classic. The former information technology project manager has been strategizing with school technologist and teacher, Jacob Bergmeier and Events Coordinator, Virginia Vettoretti on an improved marketing plan that includes new graphics, flyers, emails, and social media postings, all needing to sail out the door immediately if Kennedy friends, family and alumni are going to be notified in time.

“The Golf Classic is fun! The people who come just love a day out on the course,” Compton said. “Most of the attendees are male, so you get that whole thing of guys razzing each other, guys having a good time at other’s expense. It’s just fun!”

The biggest challenge for Kennedy Catholic High School, as it is with any perpetually under-funded organization, is getting friends and family to take out their checkbooks. But in Kennedy’s case, the fundraising efforts may be uniquely hampered by some old misconceptions about where the money comes from.

“We are not subsidized by the Archdiocese anymore, short of the fact that they are our landlord. They own the property and the building, but we are responsible for everything else,” Compton explained. “There are generations of alumni who have never been asked to support the school because, at that time, the need didn’t exist.”

It surely exists now, and reaching those alumni, engaging them, educating them, has become Job One for Compton, Advancement Associate Gina Marie Cantarella, and the aforementioned Ms. Vettoretti who make up the entirety of the Advancement Department team. In fact, one of Kennedy Catholic’s overall main goals, as determined in the wake of its recent Middle States Association accreditation, is to improve alumni connections with the school. Kennedy has set as a goal to carve deeper and more enduring connections with its former students, and Compton has a few ideas on the topic.

“One of the things we hope to make happen is a connection with alumni if they want to be moderators for clubs. For example, let’s just

Featured Story: by Rich Kirby say it’s a cooking club, and there’s an alumnus who now owns a restaurant. Maybe that alumnus could be a moderator, and welcome that club into his or her restaurant,” Compton suggests. “If alumni have something they are passionate about, that’s really important to them, that they want to share back with students who have a like interest – that’s a connection just waiting to be made.”

The Golf Classic, held at Centennial Golf Club in Carmel, is already a huge alumni magnet. It’s also the traditional kick-off fundraising event of the school year. The roster of events has been fairly stable the past few years, and Compton, with Ms. Vettoretti, spend a better than fair amount of time making sure each event continues to pull its weight. After all, it costs money to raise money.

“If alumni have something they are passionate about, that’s really important to them, that they want to share back with students who have a like interest – that’s a connection just waiting to be made.”

What makes an event successful? It needs to bring in desperately needed funds to the school, sure, but Compton believes an event’s success is also measured by how large a segment of the Kennedy community it engages. By either yardstick, the Annual Auction is Kennedy Eventdom’s Big Kahuna.

Up until last year, the problem with this big event was just a bit too much engagement.

Attendees had to juggle time spent mingling with time spending money at the actual auction. The more they mingled, the less they bought.

How to keep guests sipping and bidding at the same time? As it does with so many modern dilemmas, Kennedy threw some technology at it and fixed it.

“This past year, one of the things we tried new was online bidding,” Compton explained.

“We register your mobile phone, and you can actually bid from it while you are enjoying the night. You’ll be notified when you have been outbid, instead of constantly having to refer back to a paper list and see where you stand. It was very successful. We really saw an increase in the amount of money we earned

Featured Story from the silent auction, but more importantly the people who attended absolutely enjoyed it. Plus, we had people who were able to participate in the event who couldn’t attend, who could still monitor from their remote location.”

Innovative use of interactive technologies has been a recurring theme in the Advancement Department under Compton’s guidance. He has become deeply invested in electronic marketing and is in the process of doing away with those lux formal invitations many parents and alumni have come to expect in the run-ups to big Kennedy gatherings.

“We find that most people will respond just as well to an electronic invite as they would paper,” Compton observed. “So let’s save that money for the school.”

Like, maybe, for a Kennedy Catholic community fitness center...?

“There is some talk about an athletic center,” he acknowledged. “Converting some area in the convent to be a fitness area that not just athletes but the whole community could use for the improvement of health.”

The last big initiative – lights for the artificial turf field – was a success, and everyone is looking forward to Kennedy “Friday Night Lights” kicking off this football season.

The next big initiative is a bit less tangible but no less significant.

“I think the biggest challenge we have this year is building alumni relations, establishing an actual alumni organization together with some actual leadership,” Compton told The Gael. “Get a team of people together to really start fostering that alumni awareness and alumni connection – that’s our next biggest challenge.”

A Gaelic History Lesson Getting to Know The (Real, Historical) Gaels

His less-than-smiling face glares at us from T-shirts, gym shorts, scoreboards, social media and every manner of tchotchke that we can squeeze along the point-of-sale aisle in the school book store. As logos go, he’s angrier than most. He’s “The Gael,” the pupil-less and shaggy-maned standard around which generations of Kennedy Catholic students and alumni have rallied.

But who were the Gaels? Aren’t they the same as the Celts?

And what’s the deal with that horned helmet?

The naming conventions and confusion get their start with the 6th century B.C. Greek geographer Hecateus. He had the singular privilege of naming the Κελτοί (Keltoi), a tribe living in the south of France, and well-known at the time for beating up on Etruscans. As language evolved, and still lacking any kind of GPS, these “Celts” were later confused with the Galli, a tribe the Romans encountered north of the Alps. Pretty soon, the word became synonymous with “anybody who is not one of us.” By the time the western empire fell, Europe was crawling with Celts.

In it, the Gaels were descended from Gaedhal, a general of the Egyptian Pharaoh, who sided with the Israelites and was banished. But the Pharaoh’s daughter married into Gaedhal’s tribe, adding a little forbidden romance and even more ancient bloodline into the mix. The Gaels – “the Sons of Gaedhal” – arrived in Ireland in 100 B.C., either invent Celtic culture or bend it to their will, and trace their heritage as far back as Noah’s grandson.

Like we said: colorful, and all a bit of a stretch, according to 21st century research in genetics and archaeology.

The cranky warrior depicted on Kennedy Catholic letterhead (He doesn’t have a name; we proposed “Fergus” but no one’s gotten back to us yet...) likely hails from the time of Dál Riata. That’s the moniker given to an Irish kingdom that included part of western Scotland from the 6th into the 8th century. The Gaels (they were called “Scoti” then) of Dál Riata had a large war fleet of long ships like their more famous Viking contemporaries, and like Vikings, raided and pillaged along both coasts and throughout the North Channel.

Those who went to Ireland are called Gaelic, Goidelic or Q-Celtic; the Celts who wound up in Britain, Brythonic or P-Celtic. Fortunately for Kennedy, “Gaelic” caught on, and “Goidelic” didn’t, as “The Goidels” would sound more like a doo-wop group than a sports team.

Importantly for us at Kennedy who want to make an effort to get behind these guys, records indicate that our namesake Dark Age yahoos were Christian. St. Columba, who established the famous abbey at Iona, was a power broker in Dál Riata society. In fact, the chronicle of his life provides much of what we know of the time period.

The Irish tell a far more colorful tale, as the Irish are inclined to do. The legends of their founding were collected in the 11th century by an unknown scribe in a book he called Lebor Gabála Érenn. That translates as “The Book of the Taking of Ireland,” but it is known more popularly today as The Book of Conquests.

Dark Age Gaels have had a bit of a rough go of it, outside the history books. Unlike the ancient Greek warriors, Native American tribes, or medieval knights adopted as mascots by so many other schools, pop culture has not so warmly embraced our Gaels.

The Fox TV series Roar only lasted a half-season when it premiered on U.S. television in 1997. A very young Heath Ledger played a Gaelic orphan prince in a Xena-esque mix of swords, sorcery, Christian legends, pagan mythology and unreasonably short leather kilts. In The Gaelic King, released in the UK in July 2017, Gaels battle Picts in 800 A.D.. But first, the producers had to battle creditors; The feature barely got made, and only after crowd-funding saved the second half.

Pop culture’s most famous Gael is arguably Cormac Mac Art, a character created by American pulp writer Robert E. Howard.

The Irish pirate and reaver is cut from the same jib as Howard’s celebrated swashbuckler, Conan the Barbarian.

But, hey now, what about that hat? The Kennedy mascot (“Fergus,” please.) is easily most famous for his horned helmet, and you would be forgiven for confusing our beloved Gael with a Viking. Except that Vikings didn’t wear horned helmets either.

As it turns out, the headgear actually dates back to 1876 and the first-ever complete staging of Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen in Bayreuth, Germany. The opera’s costume designer, one Carl Emil Doepler, likely inspired by the fanciful work of some Scandinavian artists around the turn of the 19th century, dressed his Norsemen in the now Viking-standard helms. Wagner’s Ring Cycle and Doepler’s spiky haberdashery were both big hits, and “Ride of the Valkyries” and pointy Viking hats have been staples of toughness ever since.

Athletic Changes: By Rich Kirby

Athletic Director Tassone in His War Room When he took on the job as head coach of the Kennedy Catholic varsity football team in 2016, Dominick Tassone took over a struggling program. The Gaels had won just one game the year before, and zero the year before that. From a high of around 50 kids in the program during the 2011-12 season, the head count had dropped to about 30.

Coming off last year’s turning point 4-4 season, Tassone has managed to add 10 more players to the roster. But he makes it clear there is still a rough row to hoe in the season ahead.

“The big challenge is a lack of experience on the offensive side of the ball,” he said. “The positive is that our offensive line is all coming back, but we did lose two starters. We got a first year quarterback who is a junior, we lost our leading wide receiver. But we got a new transfer in, a running back. We got some basketball guys coming to play some skill positions, so offensively we’ll be fine.”

“Our defense is loaded. We have 7-8 returning guys, we are going to put in some good athletes around them, so defensively we should be better than we were last year.”

The Gaels play in the Catholic High School Football League of Metropolitan New York, which Tassone describes cheerlessly as a “gauntlet.”

“It’s the best league in the state,” he explains. “Every week you are traveling to different boroughs, the Bronx, Brooklyn, Staten Island, Queens, Long Island. So you are on the road a lot, you’re not just facing Westchester. Every week, we’re going to see someone from a different area, ready to beat up on us.”

It’s a familiar kind of bruising for Tassone, as the coach grew up in the Catholic League. Raised on Long Island, he went to Holy Trinity in Hicksville as a student. Later on, Tassone coached at that school, before making the move down to Southeast High School in Bradenton, Florida. Last year he jumped at the chance to come back home.

Over the summer, Kennedy tapped Football Coach Tassone to be new Athletic Director Tassone. When he began to broaden his horizons to meet his new responsibilities, the newlyminted AD liked what he saw.

“Our varsity teams are tremendous!” Tassone said. “Girls’ soccer, boys’ soccer, they are always making deep runs into the playoffs and the state championships. Baseball won the league this year, lacrosse made it to the state finals, won the city championship. Volleyball has been tremendous. So as far as those programs go, we are doing pretty well.”

Even though there is no chess team at Kennedy, Tassone knows he needs to play several moves ahead if the Kennedy varsity squads are going to enjoy continued success past the unforgiving grinder of graduation. Right now, the JV and frosh teams, where they even exist, are a little light in the roster.

The coach reveals that the secret to swelling ranks in a high school sports roster is sincerity.

“As long as the kids know that you care about them, they are going to buy in,” Tassone told The Gael. “If they think you are in it for yourself or some other reason, it’s not going to work.

If the kids can see that the coaches are all in, that the school is all in, then it’s something they will buy into.”

The new AD figures his recruiting efforts will get a boost in the wake of the football team’s scheduled trip to Sarasota, Florida. The Kennedy Gaels will take on the Out of Door Academy Thunder on October 13 in a game Tassone set up through his network of Sunshine State coaching colleagues.

“I reached out to a connection I had, and they were loving the idea of having a New York team come down there,” Tassone said. “It just worked out. Fr. Vaillancourt thought the idea was a home run, so we just went ahead and did it. The parents were one hundred percent on board, so we are looking forward to a nice road trip.”

Athletic Changes: By Rich Kirby Since becoming athletic director, Tassone has become very active working with the Admissions Department in the recruitment of new Kennedy students. To hear him tell it, it’s not the toughest part of his day.

“As far as a sales pitch, almost all our sports speak for themselves,” he said. “Softball, lacrosse, baseball, volleyball, basketball: All teams playing in championships within the last couple of years. Football’s on the rise. I talk about our facilities, we got top notch fields, we got two football fields, two soccer fields, two lacrosse fields, that’s a big deal. Many schools don’t even have one. Our softball field is beautiful, we just got the brand new scoreboard, our baseball field is by far the best in the league, we got the nicest gym in the league... so I just stress our facilities.”

Those new facilities are lit! – literally, as of later this season.

Brand new field lights will illuminate the gridiron when Kennedy Catholic ushers in a new era with Friday night football. Tassone hopes that alumni will use the night games to reconnect with other grads and the school over tailgate parties.

“These kids have to be held accountable, and they are expected to be able to perform in the classroom – number one! – and out on the field. We cannot allow academics to take a back seat, it is just not in our DNA.”

“Everybody loves it, we did it last year for Homecoming, and the whole school came out for it,” he enthused. “Great atmosphere. It changes the culture of the school.” ...but not nearly as much as the new athletic director is changing it. This year the coaching staff is initiating what Tassone calls the “academic playbook.” Athletes will be required to fill it out with all their test scores and homework grades and have it signed by their coach. If the coaches see that the player’s scores are sagging, they will ensure the student receives extra help.

“These kids have to be held accountable, and they are expected to be able to perform in the classroom – number one – and out on the field. We cannot allow academics to take a back seat, it is just not in our DNA. It’s academics first. We promote the scholar athlete, not just the student athlete.

Another Successful President’s Dinner in the History Books Thank you to everyone who was in attendance for our 9th annual President’s Dinner at the Marriott of Tarrytown. The annual dinner celebrates those who set the benchmark for Kennedy Catholic. Each year we recognize our Students of Excellence, Teacher(s) of Excellence, and key members of our community who contribute to the success of our Catholic institution.

The Lux Christi Award The Lux Christi Award was presented to Alfred Tinger, MD, FACRO for his dedication to Catholic Education and continuing contributions to Kennedy Catholic.

The Divine Compassion Award The Divine Compassion Award was presented to Joyce Ferraro for her support of Catholic Education and as an ambassador to Kennedy Catholic.

Students of Excellence Awards Awards to Students of Excellence were presented to Select Members of the Senior Class who best represent the qualities of courage, compassion, service, and academic accomplishment.

Teacher of Excellence Award Awards to the Teacher of Excellence were presented to Mr. Brian Bruder and Mr. Robert Santini.They were recognized by fellow teachers as exemplary in the education of Kennedy students over the past year.

Kennedy Catholic Graduation Ceremony June 3, 2017

Class of 2017 Sets Record Scholarship Total The Class of 2017 set a record total this year of $39,400,000 in college scholarships. Graduates went on to attend schools like the US Naval Academy, Notre Dame, BC, WPI, Manhattan College, Fordham, and many more. Kennedy’s Advanced Placement and University programs allow students to earn real college credits. Some graduates are even starting their first year as sophomores because of the amount of credits they earned. ************************** Graduates:

Wherever you go in life, we pledge to be here to cheer you on as you grow into our country’s leaders and we will also be here when you are in need of support or guidance. Always remember the words you said daily while you were in the building...We are Courageous. We are Compassionate. We are Kennedy Catholic.!

The Service-Based “Giving Tree Club” Goes Big There are many clubs at Kennedy Catholic, but the Giving Tree Club provided some inspiring service to communities outside of Kennedy Catholic. Clubs like this are important because they not only do important charity work, but they also help to spread the Kennedy Catholic name in a positive light into surrounding communities. Here is a list of the projects the club completed last year.

Toy Drive for Children’s Hospital Collected close to 500 holiday items and brought some joy to children unable to celebrate at home with their families.

Friends of Karen Using funds made from bake sales, they adopted two families through “Friends of Karen.” They were able to provide gift cards to these families who both had children battling cancer.

American Heart Association On Valentines Day they raised funds through flower sales and used the proceeds to make a donation to the American Heart Association.

Baskets for Barbara In honor of our beloved Sister Barbara, they collected donated items from Kennedy families and made over 100 Easter Baskets that were donated to Cardinal McCloskey Community Services. The center protects and promotes independence for at-risk children and families and those with developmental disabilities through their services.

Gael Robotics Competes at “Worlds” Last spring our Robotics Club competed in the World Championships in Kentucky. To qualify the team had to be ranked throughout their competitive season in the top 6% of the teams for the Starstruck season.

They were among competitors from 30 countries at the championship event.

The Gaels learned a lot at the event. Although they did not place, they were able to see and learn from the best teams in the world and utilize the knowlege they aquired this year.

Kennedy Hosts 1st Color Run Back in June the ’16-’17 Kennedy Catholic Student Council held the first annual Color Run. The event was well attended by students, parents, and alumni. Another event is planned by the current Student Council for this October which has been slated as a costume event. The challenging 5 kilometer event (3.1 miles) covers much of Kennedy Catholic’s campus including the track, turf athletic fields, parking lot, and fields in front of the school.

Pasquarella Releases First Album

Heard it through the Grapevine Got Wings? 1st Lt. Jason Davin ’11 is now a UH-1Y Helicopter pilot. This type of helicopter is designed for, among other things, troops transport, medical evacuation, and close air support. You can read more about this in the next edition of the Gael.

After working for a period of time with the Miami Marlins, John Lopez ’07 accepted a job with the MLB in the Commissioner’s office working with Analytics. He helps oversee the MLB Draft and scouting for all 30 teams! Be on the lookout in the next edition of The Gael for John’s story.

SRM is an album created by VILLUSION: the alias of Kennedy Catholic alum Jonathan Pasquarella.

The album features influences of his upbringing of 80’s synth-pop while adhering to his love for the more contemporary electronic music.

Having such a passion for music, VILLUSION creates his songs fully from start to finish. With versatility in this aspect, he is better able to voice the emotions and sound that is desired.
