LETTERS FROM LANCE

Wow – that year really flew by! I think they tend to go faster and faster every year. The evolution of the Quarterly Magazine this year was one of my favorites. This is our wrap up issue of the four pillars of the Tri-Cities Community: Agriculture, Hanford/Energy, Education, and now we arrive at Medical. I think what really did it for me was that these topics afforded me the opportunity to see what so many great Tri-Citians were continuing to do to grow our community, provide for our residents, and make an impact.

This issue is no different. I am excited for you to see the passion that our two featured medical companies exhibit in this issue. The work that the Cancer Center is doing has likely affected almost everyone of us reading this. I was blown away at what was happening at SIGN Fracture and the impact that they were having not only locally but around the World!

The medical topic and focus hits extra hard right now because one of our team members Tyson Jones and his beautiful wife Krista are facing a medical challenge with Krista preparing to have brain surgery to remove a tumor. I think about how it was discovered, the local Doctors advice, the referrals they received, and the support they will need medically here locally after the surgery – it’s overwhelming. When you are personally in that situation, medical care is the single most important thing in your life. We are all hoping and praying for Krista to have a successful journey and speedy recovery. Over the last 20 years I have seen our area grow substantially in the medical arena and it’s impressive. I know there are still certain procedures that many leave the area for, but that list has shrunk dramatically over the last few years. I am thankful for that. The investment in new clinics and new business models in this area are driving innovation and making our area a better place to live.

Sorry to divert so far off the topic of Real Estate, but I truly believe a healthy community supported by great medical care is a cornerstone of our growth and success. Please enjoy some of highlights in this wrap up issue. We have had some fantastic news in the Real Estate markets the last 4 weeks of the year causing a surge in activity – I am excited to share some of that with you here. We look forward to a HEALTHY and Happy New Year in ‘26

WELCOME TO THE TEAM!

JOSEPH FOSTER

I’ve been a licensed Realtor since 2003, and I’m excited to be part of a team where collaboration and supporting one another truly matter. One of the things I love most about the Tri-Cities is the nearly 300 days of sunshine we enjoy each year.

Outside of real estate, Joseph enjoys traveling with his wife, Erica, especially to destinations with a warm climate. He is also a proud grandfather to four grandchildren, who are his whole world, and he loves spending as much time with them as possible.

KADLEC TRI-CITIES CANCER CENTER

CENTER FOR HEALING AND HOPE

Since opening its doors in 1994, the Kadlec Tri-Cities Cancer Center remains the only, local not-for-profit facility providing comprehensive care to patients, with numerous additional resources offered through the Tri-Cities Cancer Center Foundation.

The Kadlec Tri Cities Cancer Center holds five national accreditations recognizing and meeting standards that promote cancer prevention, research, education and high quality, coordinated cancer care.

“We were the first cancer center in Washington state to receive accreditation from the National Accreditation Program for Rectal Cancer and the only cancer center within a two hours’ drive to hold an accreditation from the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers,” said Jessica Lukson, RN, BSN and administrative director for the Kadlec Tri-Cities Cancer Center. “Our patients can stay local to receive cancer care knowing their caregivers and facility promote excellence through their adherence to these quality standards.”

The Kadlec Tri-Cities Cancer Center is dedicated to providing hope, healing and worldclass cancer care that also includes convenient, on-site infusion therapy and cuttingedge radiation treatments using a new TrueBeam linear accelerator just installed in 2025. Kadlec Tri-Cities Cancer Center patients may also access innovative medications, including some offered for the first time in our region. Additionally, a compassionate palliative care program, survivorship clinic and research program drive advancements in treatment and overall quality of life.

As the sole not-for-profit cancer center in the Tri-Cities, the Kadlec Tri-Cities Cancer Center reinvests revenue directly into programs and facilities that support cancer care, allowing the facility to prioritize the needs of vulnerable patients and support other vital services. To expand access to comprehensive, holistic care, the clinic relies on the generous support of the community through its foundation.

Cancer survivors are invited to take a rose at the annual Cancer Crushing Breakfast, held each spring to support local patients, programs and services.

The Oncology Navigation team at the

Cancer Center guides patients and their families through the journey of a cancer diagnosis, treatment and survivorship.

All funds raised at Tri-Cities Cancer Center Foundation events stay right here to assist our local community.

Team-building activities can also benefit local patients. Eaton Corp. dedicated a single work day to tasks at the cancer center.

Caregivers said goodbye to old equipment as the cancer center welcomed a $6.2M linear accelerator that expands treatment options.

Registered Nurse Care Managers at the Kadlec Tri-Cities Cancer Center are part of the only not-for-profit team providing cancer care in our community.

Kadlec Tri-Cities

Speck Family Dealerships helped raise the flag for Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October and donated $50,000 toward new mammogram technology.

The most recent Autumn Affair raised a record $550,000 for local patients, programs and services.

Caregivers from the Kadlec Tri-Cities Cancer Center attended the annual Cancer Crushing Breakfastcoming up again on May 21.

Hanford Mission Integration Solutions is one of many corporate partners who give back to local cancer care.

Donors make a difference

“It is our goal that no one fights cancer alone,” said Lacey Perry, CFRE, chief philanthropy officer for the TriCities Cancer Center Foundation. “To this end, patients are notified of the support available to them at the start of their journey, which may include a comfort bag from the Warrior Sisterhood with items that help alleviate the side effects associated with their treatment. Patients also have access to our Resource Center and the Ralph R. Petersen Library, which has books, wigs and other items intended to ease their way – all provided at no cost.”

Dedicated community volunteers also provide haircuts, shaves and hairpiece fittings for patients losing their hair due to treatment. Donor gifts fund support groups offered to all those touched by cancer and provide a safe environment for patients, families and friends to receive information, learn coping skills, help reduce anxiety and share common concerns. A list of groups and classes is available here.

In addition, donor support to a fund dedicated to patient needs covers many things not reimbursed by insurance, which is part of the complexity of financially managing a cancer diagnosis. The Tri-Cities Cancer Center Foundation teams with social workers to assist with medication co-pays, genetic testing and other items that may not be covered by insurance at all, but are often considered necessities.

“Our goal is to provide a welcoming environment where our patients and their families can experience compassionate staff and personalized care that is unique to their situation,” shared Lorie MacIsaac, clinical social worker for the Kadlec Tri-Cities Cancer Center.

“We understand patients require more than medical care and have caregivers with expertise in emotional, spiritual and practical concerns throughout their care. Patients and their families have access to nurse navigators, social workers, dieticians and a multitude of holistic and supportive services to meet their specific needs.”

On the forefront of care

Over the past several years, the Kadlec Tri-Cities Cancer Center has participated in the development of groundbreaking advancements in cancer treatment and helped develop novel therapies that were once unimaginable.

“People are familiar with traditional chemotherapy, which uses powerful medications that kill rapidly dividing cells, including cancer cells,” said Lukson.

“While a very effective and valuable tool, it often affects healthy cells, leading to side effects like hair loss, nausea and fatigue. Precision medicine and targeted therapies are a more recent approach that treat cancer more precisely based on a patient’s specific genetic makeup, lifestyle and environment.”

By analyzing a patient’s tumor, Kadlec Tri-Cities Cancer Center oncologists can identify specific genetic mutations that drive cancer growth, then use therapies designed to attack specific molecules involved in cancer cell growth, minimizing damage to healthy cells and reducing the overall side effects.

“These therapies are highly effective in treating certain types of cancer, especially those with specific genetic alterations,” added Lukson. “It’s transforming some cancers from a deadly disease to a chronic condition, offering patients hope and an improved quality of life where hope didn’t exist before. It’s a game changer.”

Looking to grow

Community donations helped open the facility in 1994, and donor gifts supported later renovations and expansions. The need to expand again is on the horizon as more patients are living longer with cancer and requiring continued care.

“By providing greater access to world-class care close to home, we alleviate the stress of travel to let patients focus on recovery and healing, surrounded by familiar faces,” said Perry. “A local cancer center brings hope and healing to our community.”

You are invited to be part of the Tri-Cities Cancer Center Foundation’s mission by learning more to advocate for the work they do. This can be done by signing up for newsletters and communications, attending events, volunteering, contributing and sharing the importance of prevention and early detection with friends and family in hopes that you never actually need services at the Kadlec Tri-Cities Cancer Center.

Perry added, the community is also encouraged to host an event or promotion that directly benefits cancer center patients or make a planned gift, “We rely on continued support from donors, including those who leave the foundation in their will. Legacy gifting reaches into the future to touch our community for years to come.”

WHERE FRACTURE CARE MEETS HOPE.

SIGN Fracture Care International is a humanitarian nonprofit that works to expand access to quality fracture treatment in low- and middle-income countries. They educate and train local surgeons in how to treat serious bone injuries and design, manufacture, and donate orthopaedic implants and surgical instruments that can be used in low-resource hospitals—even without expensive X-ray machines or electricity. By empowering surgeons and equipping hospitals, SIGN helps people with broken bones heal properly, recover mobility, and avoid lifelong disability, enabling them to return to work and support their families.
