+CLIENT National Geographic is a non-profit organization whose expeditions embody what it means to sustain the character and integrity of each place we, as humans, can discover - to keep our environment, culture, and heritiage, as well as the well-being of its residents. By remodeling an existing building in the Presisido, an opportunity for guests and visitors to learn about the many nations that developed in the area between 1776-1945, opens up. Not only can an exhibition visitor go in and learn about the many discoveries that National Geographic researchers and scientists are discovering, but they can also learn about the importance of the region as well as the importance of keeping architectural identity of the area in tact. The more we can teach about the value of sustainability, the better we will do as a modern society. The goal for this mixed-use building is to represent all that the area was and is today, as well as highlight the amazing discoveries of the non-profit work from National Geographic. By staying true to the Colonial Revival style of the building, and merging that with innovative design inspired by multiple case studies throughout the globe, a bespoke & emmersive design is formed. Exhibition guests won’t want to walk too quickly through this space!
+PROJECT GOAL
Taking inspiration from a nearby site, The Thoreau Center for Sustainability, the projec site is to undergo a full renovation. Sustainable, recycled, and environmentally acceptable materials to be used throughout. Fire sprinkler and alarm upgrades included in the overall MEFP upgrades. As many as possible locally sourced, existing or recycled materials will be used as well as non-polluting, energy efficient materials. Upgrades will be sure to align with Presidio Preservation Standards.

Presidio. The area is representative of over 200 years of development of some of the finest military architecture in this country. Today, Presidio still holds 473 nationally registered historic buildings, all of which contribute to Presidio’s status as a National Historic Landmark District. Building types range from Colonial Revivial, Queen Anne, and Italiante styles of architecture, with this particular project location being Colonial Revivial. This rich diversity of architectural styles signifies specific building campaigns that narrate the story of the Presidio’s growth into a significant western United States Army post. Whole streetscapes of historic buildings are still intact, as well as unique, individual buildings that are significant in their own right.

Transformative Integration
010
Nature Meets Architecture Through great respect for the historic region, a nature filled, inspiring, and interactive center will feature a space for grand installations and encouraging office spaces. Biophilic design, natural sunlight, organic patterns, unique textures found in nature, and a modern innovation of light fixtures, textiles, and space organization will come together as a transformative unit. What was once known as a building interior will soon be known as a place filled with learning opportunity and discoery in an approach not before seen.
Project One Designer- Kenidi Vogelgesang
» Windows- achieve natural ventilation through open windows, operable doors and louvers to provide a positive occupant experience » Proximity to windows, outdoor views, and daylight in indoor spaces » Windows and lighting will all be under appropriate controls/timers that adjust both automatically and manually based on time of day and area within the building » Accoustic wall panels hiden as wood slats to help isolate cafe from open exhibition area » Separate heating and cooling system, adjusted appropriately for indoor cafe space, individual private offices, open public and private zones » ‘Mind’ categories will be hit by having access to natural sunlight, outdoor views, spaces of relaxation and rest, and notes within exhibition spaces that provide guests with information about the current environment that they are in » New air filtration throughout building via updated state-of-the-art HVAC systems » Office spaces created with comfort in mind. Distraction free environment while still providing for all four generations through balance of color and organization of design. Open and closed concept workspaces will be integrated. » Accoustic ceiling tiles implemented in open offices zones to control sound in collaborative zones » Stairwells will be open to able guests, which will help to promote regular daily activity » Cleanable materials with lowered VOC » Views from Cafe will help to connect the guests with nature, ground them, and in turn promote healthy eating habits » Public access to water fountains will implement further encouragement of daily healthy behaviors.

By including spaces such as a demonstration kitchen and roof top garden, the project invites community members in and teaches them how to eat healthier. The public will have access to the garden and are encouraged to contribute to the growth of the vegetation. Once a fully developed garden is in place, the guests can then participate in classes, teaching them how to turn fresh, locally grown food into delcious, cost aware meals. This will not only help the community come together, but it will also lead to the development of more gardens throughout the city which in turn will have a positive effect on reducing obesity.

+HISTORIC INSPIRATION NYC Cafe pulls inspiration from design in the early 20th century. The original New York Cafe strongly reflects eclecticism and early Italian Renaissance style that was coined by architects such as Alajos Hauszman and Kalaman Giergi. It was the highly ornamented interior and the attention to details that was to be seen in this 2021 take on the palace. In NYC Cafe, you’ll find a heavy use of gold and detailed walls that are balanced out by tall marble columns, oversized marble framed windows, and small textures in every surface. Much like the original, this project site is on a river in New york and is surrounded by a shopping plaza, marina, and many other restaurants.
