FEDERAL MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT Hello everyone, I am pleased to welcome you all to the 31st Annual Owen Sound Salmon Spectacular. As the Member of Parliament for Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound, I am amazed year after year at the success of this derby and the community support that it receives. I would like to start by thanking the Sydenham Sportsmen’s Association (SSA) for once again organizing one of North America’s finest sport fishing festivals. The success of this event would be impossible without the support of your dedicated volunteers and strong commitment to the community. Thank you. Canada is an envy of the world when it comes to recreational fishing. In 2010, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans released a report that stated that Canadian non-resident and foreign anglers made over 2 million trips within Canada. Over half of these trips were made specifically to fish for recreation. I think that it is very safe to assume that this has only increased since 2010. Recreational fishing is a family tradition and I believe that the Owen Sound Salmon Spectacular plays a huge role in encouraging our young people to carry on this tradition. Every year I see more young people out on the water with their moms and dads. It is a local and Canadian tradition that we all should be proud of. In closing, I encourage all residents and non-residents of Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound to take part in the activities that this year’s Salmon Spectacular has to offer. Whether you’re out on the water, fishing off the harbour wall, or just coming down to the fish tents for a social outing, there is something for everyone. I have been, and am looking forward to remaining, a part of this event for many years to come. I hope to meet many of you over the course of the 10-day derby. PROVINCIAL MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT Congratulations on 31 years of providing a fun-filled family event and promoting the great sport of fishing! With the dedication of the organizing committee, hundreds of volunteers, and generous sponsors, and of course the many enthusiastic fisher-men and women, a little derby has grown over the years to become the biggest family fishing festival in North America. The Owen Sound Salmon Spectacular continues to attract participant’s from all over the province of Ontario, across our great country of Canada, as well as our neighbours to the south in the United States (some who have participated from the 1st year until the present) and even international guests. The event draws multitudes of people who do not even fish and has become a very significant economic asset to the area. As a result of the great time they experience, many people make the Salmon Spectacular part of their annual vacation or trip back home to the ‘Sound’. While the fishing remains a core activity (and lots of fish are caught to the delight of the anglers and those who enjoy the tasty fillets at the ever popular fish fry’s each year) the event has expanded to include kid’s day, ladies’ day, fashion show, Elvis gospel, bingo, raffles, contests and much, much more. It truly is a family festival of fishing, fun and fellowship. It takes many hands to make such a huge event a success. As such, I extend my congratulations to the Organizers, committee members, the hundreds of volunteers (with special acknowledgement to the Bruce Peninsula Sportsmen Association for their support), entertainers and sponsors for their continued support and efforts. And of course, those dedicated anglers who ply the waters looking for the big one (and the big prize!). I have had the pleasure to attend and in fact, volunteer at the Owen Sound Salmon Spectacular Fishing Derby each year since I have been elected as MPP for the great riding of Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound. TOWN OF SOUTH BRUCE PENINSULA As the Owen Sound Harbour bustles with activity for the 31st Annual Owen Sound Salmon Spectacular, it is my pleasure as mayor of the Town of South Bruce Peninsula to welcome participants, residents and tourists to a much-anticipated annual summer event. This fun and exciting angling competition, organized and hosted by the Sydenham Sportsmen’s Association continues to grow in popularity thanks to the creativity and dedication shown by its members and the hundreds of volunteers, sponsors and participants who contribute to its success. The Salmon Spectacular has reached beyond the angling community to include so many other facets of the population. People who love good music, good food, the thrill of friendly, sportsman-like competition and a chance to connect with others in the community, are never disappointed with the variety of events provided throughout these lively days. The Sydenham Sportsmen’s Association is truly a unique organization with one foot placed in historical tradition and the other foot placed firmly in ecological concerns for the future. Members continue to foster interest and participation in the time-honoured skills of hunting and fishing, which were such an integral part of life in the past. They also recognize the need for environmental consideration of future generations and fulfill this recognition in several different ways. The Salmon Spectacular is an important fundraising event which allows them continued community outreach through education, conservation projects and the encouragement of skills which are still valued for their connection to nature, sport and self-sufficiency – skills that just can’t be learned on a computer! The SSA is a special community which gives back to the community and also reminds us to be self-aware in this wonderful, wild, natural world of ours that we sometimes forget to “see”! To provide a more personal input on the value to the outdoors community of recruiting more women to take part, we have relied once more on the sage writings of an old friend, the late Grant Ferris and have reprinted his 2004 article for this magazine on page 65.

ON OTHER MATTERS: Earlier this year, my neighbour asked if I knew what the structures being erected heading north along Hwy 6 were. I didn’t at the time. Perhaps you have noticed them. They look like an oversized bird house with no bottom and mounted on two posts, complete with metal cones to prevent predators from climbing. Turns out, that is exactly what they are. They are Barn swallow nesting structures. According to Bird Studies Canada, since 1970 the Barn swallow population has declined by 68 percent. In 2012, Barn swallows were added to the provincial Endangered Species List as threatened.

Barn swallows, like bats, nest mainly in barns, garages and outbuildings as well as under culverts and bridges. As the rural landscape and farming practices continues to evolve, many of these farm barns and buildings have become obsolete, have been removed and continue to disappear. Concerned about further loss of nesting habitat during bridge and culvert replacement and repair, Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation has erected the swallow nesting structures in an effort to offset the potential nesting loss. The old barn still stands on my neighbour’s property, minus the horses and dairy cows that used to call it home. Back then, barn doors in daytime were always open except during severe storms and winter. Barn swallow nests abounded throughout the structure and Al, my old dairy farmer neighbour (my uncle’s brother) used to write on an overhead beam, the date the swallows returned each year. Amazingly, the dates were usually within a day or two. These days the barn doors are closed most of the time and I got to thinking about the swallows and took a look-see. The nests are still there as remembered and amazingly as I

was pleased to see, so are the swallows. They are a beautiful mid-size songbird that consumes hundreds of insects each day. I fear for their future. Thanks to the support and generosity of Honda Canada, the SSA Fish Hatchery was presented with a new Honda generator at the Owen Sound Honda Dealership. It replaced the old hatchery generator that served the SSA fisheries program for the past 23 years. The new small high tech inverter generators are amazing. Digital technology and efficient small engines encased in engine noise muffling casings make for quiet and more efficient operation. Honda is one of the two companies that use a system called dual wave control to ensure both the amperage and the voltage delivered by the generator stay steady through changing power demands. fees go directly into the Fish and Wildlife Special Purpose Account (SPA). It costs over $100 million annually to pay for our fish and wildlife programs and services, of which the SPA pays for about two-thirds. Programs supported by the SPA include fish culture and stocking, wildlife population studies, research and enforcement.

Fourteen months after the passing of her husband Lorne Smith “Mr. Bluebird”. Mabel was a faithful SSA volunteer as she accompanied and assisted Lorne on their Bluebird trails, cleaning, repairing, replacing and recording nesting boxes. Mabel and Lorne are both greatly missed in the Bluebird nesting box program as well as at SSA club functions. (See more about the Bluebird program on page 18-19 of the 2017 Outdoors Annual.)

IN MEMORY OF PASSED FRIENDS Sadly each year, but grateful we have this magazine to help pay tribute to friends who have passed on.

Ronald William “Ron” Wray – Born in Stratford on July 17, 1937, Ron passed away peacefully in Owen Sound on December 17, 2017 at the age of 80. Well known in the community as a CFOS radio broadcaster, Ron was also a man of many talents, and interests who prior to his failing health was a long time SSA and Owen Sound Salmon Spectacular volunteer. As a matter of fact going back long before the big top tent arrived on the scene. John Ford chuckles when he recalls the 1988 awards presentations. “It rained and since we had no stage, we had to improvise. Ron Wray and I both had vans, so we parked them fairly close together and used a huge tarp provided by Mike Garvey to make a roof between them. That was where we presented the first derby prizes.” Anyone of us who knew Ron has a great memory or story to recall. Ron, with his wonderful sense of humour, never-quit attitude and ability to take most everything in stride, has been missed by his many friends for a long while. We miss him even more so now.

Hazel Mae Fletcher – Suddenly in Owen Sound on Tuesday April 10, 2018 at the age of 93; thirty-one days after Lorne’s passing. Many were shocked and sadened, to lose two wonderful people and outstanding supporters of the Sydenham Sportsmen’s Association and many other conservation organizations. Arnie Clark wrote an article appearing on page 83 in the 2009 edition of the Sportsmen’s Annual, titled ‘Fletch’ Too Busy to Retire. Find a copy and read it. It would be difficult to do better in capturing the character of Lorne and the relationship he and Hazel shared. An SSA member himself, Lorne has always been generous in supplying fishing rods and reels and equipment for SSA Junior programs and Kid’s Day at the Owen Sound Salmon Spectacular.

Terrence Warrington “Terry” Faulkner – Born in Owen Sound on October 17, 1935, Terry passed away suddenly in Meaford on Friday, November 17, 2017 at the age of 82. A long-time volunteer and supporter of the Owen Sound Salmon Spectacular, he was well known locally as the distributor of A.C. Shiner and Silver Fox Fishing lures. Terry is missed by his fellow volunteers and friends.

Mabel Sutherland-Smith – Peacefully in Owen Sound on December 26, 2017 at the age of 96.

When the late Grant Ferris decided to start having monthly raffles at SSA general meetings, Lorne was his first call and he responded by donating merchandise much more than equal to dollars spent. Grant also got a lot of what’s happening information for his newspaper columns from Lorne. Anyone who spent time at Lorne’s, were always amazed at the number of people from near and far dropping in to buy or pick up an order and staying a while to chat.

When SSA member Jack Doherty and I were talking to Hazel at Lorne’s visitation, both were surprised to learn that the Feltcher’s and Doherty’s came from the same neighbourhood in Hamilton. Over the years that we have operated the “Fishing Machine” at the Salmon Spectacular, Jack kept Lorne busy repairing the level-wind fishing reels that the kids manage to mangle. A lot of people have Lorne stories and I have more than a couple myself. I was at Lorne’s just prior to Christmas a few years ago and Lorne was busy as usual but not in his normal good mood and the Christmas spirit was not in the air. I was soon told the reason for his agitation was that with only a very short time to go, he still had a few Christmas fishing rod orders to finish and Hazel had been pressuring him to put up some Christmas lights. I wisely remained silent – torn between business and love is a terrible place for a man to find himself. I don’t believe Fletch got the lights up for Hazel that year, but if you look up in the sky tonight, I’m sure you will see a couple of stars shining brightly together.

SSA Wildlife Demonstration Area Host Site For Motus Wildlife Tracking System Project Motus Wildlife Tracking System: Determining landscape use of migratory animals in Eastern Canada. The Motus Wildlife Tracking System is a joint project of Bird Studies Canada, Western University, Acadia University and the University of Guelph. The primary goal of the project is to establish a network of automated radio telemetry arrays throughout the Americas that will allow the real time tracking of radio tagged flying migratory animals throughout the land and seascape. In 2014 The Sydenham Sportsmen’s Association (SSA) was asked to be part of this unique program by allowing for the placement of a radio telemetry tower on our property. There are also some species that can be captured by shooting a net at them. You can capture seabirds this way from a small plane or helicopter. In these cases you would have a large group of people ready to remove the birds as quickly as possible to reduce stress and injury. Of course all of this capturing and tagging requires a number of permits and animal safety protocols. Tags are put on using a leg-loop body harness, it’s like a little backpack that rests on the bird’s lower back, with elastic thread wrapping around the birds thighs. Each tag weighs less than 5% of the bird’s body weight to reduce any impacts on the bird. The smallest tags only have a lifespan of 15 days, the largest ones nearly three years. From a recent update sent to us from the Motus group 12 birds representing eight different species were detected in our area in 2017 and 2018. This is a very small detection number considering that in 2017 they radiotagged 111 species and 3626 individuals including birds, bats and insects. Motus points out that although we may have only a few detections, it is still providing valuable data as part of the whole array. Conservation embodies a large spectrum of our environment. Big or small any conservation projects are worth our efforts and we have always tried to do our part.

Students Create Mural Masterpiece For the Owen Sound Mill Dam by Ron Robb, SSA Hatchery Manager

Partnership Specialist, Craig Todd, Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources & Forestry (MNRF) Midhurst District/Owen Sound Field Office, informed me in February of this year that students in the Art Class at St. Mary’s High School were going to design a mural for the storage building at the Owen Sound Mill Dam.

Most, but not all I thought, and suggested that a clear coat be applied over the mural that would allow us to clean off any paint that might be sprayed onto the mural. All participants thought that was a good idea and agreed to have that done.

The building had been a target of graffiti vandals who were constantly painting logos and wording over the building and the site was becoming an eyesore to the community. Craig felt that in the majority of situations where a well designed art mural was created and installed on a building, most graffiti

I then approached the Sydenham Sportsmen’s Association (SSA) executive group who were happy to support this project with a financial contribution from our Association. In classroom sessions with the teacher and art students who were designing the mural, I offered input where required and it was wonderful to see how enthused and involved in the project the students were.

The partners in this project are St. Mary’s High School, the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry Owen Sound, the Sydenham Sportsmen’s Association and the City of Owen Sound. Both St. Mary’s High School Arts teacher Jenna MacLellan and Graffiti Artist Billy Goodkat who was hired to oversee the project, were at all the meetings. Personally, this has been a wonderful project to be involved with and I hope that the students of St. Mary’s High School, their families and the citizen’s of Owen Sound will be very proud of the work they have done. This mural they have created will be a beautiful asset to a beautiful and highly visited location in the City of Owen Sound.

Our History Canada is a nation with vast wilderness – soaring mountains, calm fresh waters, raging rivers, sweeping forests and abundant wildlife. In 1962, the Canadian Wildlife Federation (CWF) was founded by a group of dedicated conservationists who wanted to establish a national voice for Canada’s wildlife and habitats. They shared a vision of a country that would forever boast some of the world’s most spectacular wildlife and natural spaces. From the beginning, CWF has provided a balanced voice for wildlife conservation in Canada. In our early years, we tackled the little-known issue of pesticides and their harmful effects on wildlife. We have urged

government to take stronger action on ocean pollution, advocated for the Species at Risk Act, participated in the creation of many of Canada’s leading conservation initiatives, created an endangered species program and encouraged Canadians to reduce, re-use and recycle long before anyone had ever heard of a blue bin. Today, CWF continues to be at the forefront of conservation in Canada and boasts a true national presence. Our Board of Directors come from coast to coast and bring regional conservation perspectives to the table which help to form decisions and solutions that affect wildlife across Canada. Continued from Page 37 wildlife photography and so much more. For more than 55 years, we have been working diligently to foster this Canadian way of life. CWF offers a variety of programs to promote conservation values and inspire personal action. WILD Family Nature Club – Families get connected to a fun world of outdoor exploring and to other families doing the same with CWF’s WILD Family Nature Club. This highly popular, multi-lingual program offers opportunities for semi-structured outdoor activities, and training for adults who’d like to involve their children more with the natural world. Through our online platform Canadians can access resources, share experiences and learn about training opportunities. Canadian Conservation Corps – Recently launched by the Prime Minister as part of the Government of Canada’s Canada Service Corps, CWF’s Canadian Conservation Corps (CCC) is a three part program designed to engage young adults in our natural and cultural heritage. Young Canadians ages 18 to 30 will take part in a comprehensive program that will progress from wilderness journeys to field training and ultimately, to leading meaningful community service programs in their own communities. WILD Spaces – Youth aged nine to 12 get their hands dirty creating pollinator habitats and sharing that experience with other students. Through an online classroom, participants from across the country share pictures and stories of the wild spaces they create for bees, butterflies and other pollinators. Wild Education – Through this awardwinning program, CWF has trained more than 100,000 educators who in turn have

reached countless numbers of students over the years.

Here is a brief overview of some of our current projects:

Hinterland Who’s Who – In 2003, CWF partnered with Environment and Climate Change Canada for the re-launch of this iconic program, one of Canada’s longestrunning and most-trusted sources of public service announcements and information about our country’s wildlife.

(Saving Turtles At Risk Today) - CWF and SCALES Nature Park joined efforts to deliver the Saving Turtles At Risk Today (S.T.A.R.T.), the largest freshwater turtle conservation project in Canada. S.T.A.R.T. involves regional partners, community groups, lake associations and local residents in locating turtles in need of protection. Since the project got underway in 2013, there have been over 1,200 turtles captured and notched for observation; over 1,300 nests found, and over 4,700 turtles hatched and released back into the wild. Observations of endangered species populations also resulted in legal protection of over 1,200 km2 of wetland habitat in Muskoka and Parry Sound districts. This

Conserving Wildlife and Habitat Sustaining and improving wildlife populations and conserving, restoring and connecting habitats are key goals for CWF. Solutions often begin with research or stewardship work to restore a vulnerable species or habitat. We then look to create opportunities for CWF supporters and partners to take part in a positive actions.

As a result, CWF has expanded this important program to the Ottawa area and working with local groups on collaborative solutions for turtles. Barriers to Fish Migration – CWF is leading a collaborative research project to understand why upper Yukon River Chinook Salmon populations have declined and identify potential recovery actions. Partners include First Nations, federal and Yukon governments, the Yukon Energy Corporation, Yukon Fish and Game Association, and academic researchers. Fish movements and survival upstream of Whitehorse are being assessed, along with efficiency of the Whitehorse Rapids Fishladder. American Eel in the upper St. Lawrence River basin have declined to less than 1% of their historic abundance. CWF is engaging in field research, advocacy, and public engagement in collaboration with partner organizations to support eel recovery. National Aquatic Habitat Conservation Partnership – This partnership will provide multi-sectoral advice on fish habitat policies and programs, set priorities for conservation and increase resources for research and habitat conservation. CWF is currently

Canadian Marine Animal Rescue – CWF is the national coordinator for C-MARA (Canadian Marine Animal Rescue Alliance). C-MARA is comprised of regional marine animal response networks on the Pacific and Atlantic coasts. CWF’s goal is to improve their capacity to respond to emergency calls, improve efficiency and to better establish

their need and value to Canadians and governments. C-MARA also provides an increased knowledge about large marine animals and improves our ability to prevent and respond to emergencies. Last year C-MARA responded to 645 marine animal incidents. North Atlantic Right Whale Recovery – Our conservation team conducted research on the risk to Right Whales from commercial fishing gear and published a technique for predicting the movement of Right Whales in Canadian waters. Our expertise guided the federal government’s response to the Right Whale crisis over the summer, shutting down the crab fishery. We continue to discuss solutions to the plight of the Right Whale and provide guidance to Fisheries and Oceans Canada on the development of an action plan for North Atlantic Right Whale recovery.

2017 TENT RAISING . . . BPSA GETS HELP The Largest Annual Event of the Year in Grey-Bruce is Underway! by Stu Paterson 2018 is the 31st annual Owen Sound Salmon Spectacular fishing derby and festival. Mounted by the Sydenham Sportsmen’s Association (SSA) this annual celebration attracts 50-thousand visitors to the festival tent at Georgian Shores Marina on the Owen Sound waterfront. Add in the activity of several thousand anglers vying for the “big one” and you have potential for ten days of fun and excitement. The 2017 tent raising went smoothly in spite of hefty winds lifting the roof a few times before the side supports were solidly in place. The Bruce Peninsula Sportsmen’s Association (BPSA) sent a 30-person team to help. The Grey-Bruce Realty Re-Max Brokerage supplied a dozen workers. Add in members of the derby’s Sydenham

Sportsmen’s Association and the 300 foot long tent went up in just 4 hours. It can be a dangerous job if you don’t know what you are doing, but the folks from London’s Big Top Tent Rentals over-see the job and take the time to explain how to do it safely and properly. The Bruce Peninsula and Sydenham clubs often work together. Both are volunteer run conservation based clubs that have a long history of fish stocking, to help ensure healthy sports fishing in the Grey-Bruce region. BPSA and SSA regulars on the 2017 tent erection job welcomed the help of the ReMax Team volunteers which it was agreed, made a big difference last year. Bruce Peninsula Sportsmen’s Association President, Jim Martell, one of the volunteers,

said his members enjoy helping out. In his words, “profits from this event go towards conservation and that’s what we are all about”. Salmon Spectacular Co-Chair Mike Prevost says this derby attracts anglers from as far away as the East Coast. For anglers from the GTA, a major attraction for them seems to be the fact that they can safely eat the fish they catch. The 2018 Salmon Spectacular Awards Ceremony is set for the big tent at 3 pm on Sunday, September 2nd. The Owen Sound Salmon Spectacular awards more than $150, 000.00 in prizes including boats. SSA Volunteers Assist MNRF in Local Stocking for Public Fishing by Ron Robb, SSA Hatchery Manager In early April of this year I received an inquiry from Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources & Forestry (MNRF) Partnership Specialist Craig Todd asking if members of the Sydenham Sportsmenâ€™s Association (SSA) would be interested in working alongside MNRF staff members for 2 days to stock Brook trout and Brown trout from the Chatsworth Fish Culture Station into local ponds open for public fishing. I presented the request at our SSA April General Meeting and quickly had ten volunteers offer their help. I also asked SSA Bulletin Editor Dave Skelton to send out an email blast to the SSA membership asking for volunteers and received so many members offering to volunteer that I had to

turn members away. In doing so, I told them we would be looking for volunteers to do this next year when we would be assisting in this project again for 4 or 5 days. There were 9 SSA volunteers assisting on April 19 and 8 SSA volunteers taking part on April 23. MNRF staff members were thankful of the help and our SSA members enjoyed the job. Our members were also very impressed with the Chatsworth Fish Hatchery and the fish they raise in that facility. The Brown trout we helped stock were 28 months of age and weighed in excess of one pound. Personally, I would like to thank the SSA members who volunteered for the project and say thank you to the MNRF staff for providing the opportunity for us to assist.

Sydenham Sportsmen’s Association Stream Enhancement Project Reflecting on the past . . . Looking at the future! In years now past, many dedicated Sydenham Sportsmen’s Association (SSA) volunteers led by or following in the footsteps of the late legendary Os McArthur, participated in numerous major stream enhancement and restoration projects. These previous projects focused mainly on streams in Grey County, such as the South Spey River, Pottawatomi River, Sydenham River, Maxwell’s Creek and Telfer (Bothwell’s) Creek. They were not stream beautification projects, but were efforts directed where serious problems had developed and both nature and the fishery really needed a hand.

In order to move a stream project from the planning stage to the finish, our members met with the Ministry of Natural Resources & Forestry and the Grey Sauble Conservation Authority for their approvals. We then approached the SSA executive for their approval and money to fund the project, and lastly we approached the landowner for his approval. Women in the outdoors This article by the late Grant Ferris originally was published in the 2004 Sportsmen’s Annual Any Sports persons with daughters, like me, must feel pretty happy with the general move to encourage more female participation in our outdoor sports. I have two daughters that love the outdoors and also a daughter-in-law that enjoys the good life. One of my daughters prefers rockclimbing to hunting but likes to camp and hike while the other daughter likes both hunting and fishing. My daughter-in-law may not like some outdoors activities, but I haven’t found any she doesn’t like yet. In recognition of our changing lifestyles, the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters has created a program called W.O.W, which stands either for Women’s Outdoors Weekends or Women’s Outdoors Workshops, the OFAH hasn’t apparently made up their minds which to choose. The program is based on women teaching outdoors skills to other women,

a simple but clever idea that makes the program really work. The workshops take place primarily at the Leslie M. Frost Centre near Dorset, Ont., a lovely location for work or play. Quite a few courses are offered, including bass fishing for beginners, walleye tactics, map and compass reading, camping and campsite cooking, outdoors survival, wild edibles and “medicinals”, waterfowl identification, firearms handling and safety and lots more. The OFAH lets participants mix and match the programs of their choice and offers a friendly, social atmosphere to learn, unhampered by the pressures imposed by well-meaning male family members that sometimes take recreation a little too seriously. Lots of my friends have wives, daughters and granddaughters who fish, canoe, hunt, hike, drive their own motorcycles and join them as full family members in the outdoors. This should be considered a natural thing to do, something that Victorian thinking robbed from several generations. You’ve come a long way ladies; don’t look back now.

We Appreciate Your Thanks by Mike Prevost SSA Member Every year, at the end of the Owen Sound Salmon Spectacular, I as do other Committee members receive letters of thanks from grandparents, parents and family relatives for making their children feel special during the derby. Aside from our yearly Kid’s Day and two Kid’s Evenings where all the kids go home with something; and with total thanks to the generosity of our sponsors, we are often given an assortment of beginner children’s rods and reels, small tackle boxes and assorted lures, that we also like to randomly hand out to some of the kids coming through the fish weigh-in station. These kids may have been out fishing with family or just showing up with a parent or grandparent to see what their older brothers or sisters have caught. If you want to see the future of conservation and what the Salmon Spectacular is really all about, just watch the reaction and expression on the faces of the kids at the weigh-in station.

We have also felt very rewarded over the years, during the 10-day event, to have had a number of fishing derby and tent attendees come up to tell us what a great job the Sydenham Sportsmen’s Association (SSA) are doing. Not just with the derby but with our conservation efforts in general. Last year the local professional fishing team of “Hooked on Kings“ (Ryan Amyot, Scott Amyot, Mike Rumig and Todd Coady) took it a step further. They decided to run their own fishing derby in conjunction with the Salmon Spectacular. Thanks to their sponsors and the power of social media they were able to sign up 54 contestants who were already Salmon Spectacular derby participants. Bottom line is that at the end of the Owen Sound Salmon Spectacular, Ryan handed me a donation to the SSA of $270.00 from their team, which was the total receipt of their entrees. He said they did this because

as long-time derby anglers they had always enjoyed the Salmon Spectacular and wanted to support in a meaningful way, the good work that the SSA were doing. For the original inhabitants of the Owen Sound region (the Chippewa, Huron, Ojibwe, Anishinaabe, and Potawatomi) fishing was vital to their survival, requiring co-operation and the sharing of resources. Fisheries management was integrated with systems of rank, and networks of redistribution. The leaders served as stewards—making decisions about how much to harvest, who could fish, how and when fishing would take place. The earliest commercial fishermen on Georgian Bay in the 1830s were practical people who adapted as the timber trade decimated the forests and the fur trade died out. In Owen Sound, they were mainly First Nations, Métis, and French voyageurs from the Penetanguishene area. The Georgian Bay fishery grew rapidly with the abundance of quality fish. Most of the catch from this region was shipped south to the growing City of Toronto, and into the USA. In 1875, the combined annual Georgian Bay catch of whitefish, lake trout and pickerel was over two million pounds! In the 1880s, the main Georgian Bay fishing ports were Collingwood, Meaford, Midland, Penetanguishene, Owen Sound,

Tobermory, Wiarton, and Victoria Harbour. But the ‘heydays’ of the commercial fishing industry were already coming to an end due to reckless, unregulated exploitation, habitat destruction and the emergence of invasive species. By the end of the century, the Georgian Bay fishery had collapsed. The fish were gone and so too were many of the fishermen.

SSA Fish Hatchery Receives a Boost from HONDA Representatives from the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters and HONDA teamed up to deliver seven generators to different community hatcheries across the province, including one to the Sydenham Sportsmen’s Association. The main function for the generator is to provide the oxygen supply for the SSA fish tank trailer, used to safely transport fish from the SSA fish hatchery to various stocking sites. The compact new Honda generator replaces the hatchery’s existing Honda generator, which has served the SSA fisheries program faithfully for the past 23 years.

Skunked No More, Inc. – Flintstone Lures...About Us My name is Ray McKenzie, and along with my children we own and operate the company Skunked No More, Inc. the suppliers of Flintstone Lures. We have been a fishing family for many years and over those years fishing has become our number one love. We have fished all types of water; inland lakes, ponds, and rivers, Pacific Ocean, the Gulf of Mexico and the Great Lakes. The Great Lakes has been our favorite. Rogers City, Michigan, on Northern Lake Huron is our home port. I was introduced to Flintstone Lures in February 2008 at a sport show. After talking to the owner for a few minutes it became apparent that after 22 years he was ready to part with his company, and sell his entire operation. After our conversation, I recalled the times when my kids were younger and I would buy blank spoons and let them design their own lures. With this in mind, I talked to my family about the possibility of purchasing the company. We agreed it deserved some research. We met with the owner and saw their inventory and operation. The amount

of time and work they put into their product was very impressive. Before being packaged and sent to the retailer, every lure is coated with “Tuff Gloss,” a durable protective coat. The next step in our research was to meet the retailers. We visited some of the sporting outlets that carried the products. After speaking to the owners and employees at these locations, the result was the same. They had nothing but positive things to say about the owners and their product. We were now ready to test Flintstone Lures. Being that the fishing season was fast approaching, we acquired several lures to test. We spent the entire fishing season using nothing but a variety of Flintstone Lures. The results were outstanding. The most impressive thing about the lures was the durability of the finish. With all the fish we caught, we did not lose any paint. With the fishing season coming to an end, along with our research and testing, we had a decision to make. We decided that the purchase of Flintstone Lures was

a wise investment. In October of 2008 we purchased Flintstone Lures. As we start our 10th year of ownership, I look back at our growth as a family and business and I am very proud of the results. In that time my children have presented us with three adorable little ones to carry on the business. We have had many people help us to become larger and more efficient as a company. Flintstone Lures, with the help of many friends and family gets bigger and better every year. We owe a lot to our sales reps, pro-staff and retail outlets for promoting our products. With their help we will continue to grow and improve as a supplier of fishing tackle. In closing, we consider ourselves to be very fortunate to be involved in the building of a company, in a field that we love so very much! We are fishermen at heart! Thank you and good fishing! I had 45 customers, and I knew everyone by their first name. Delivering the daily newspaper was a chance to learn more about the people in my community. I always made time to build those relationships.

(Please tell us!) No matter if, when and how often these “I am” statements match your outdoor lifestyle, there’s one statement that galvanizes all fishing and hunting pastimes. I am Conservation. I am Conservation is the single greatest statement that describes the passion and purpose behind every traditional outdoors pursuit. I am an OFAH member is in the echo of 80,000 voices that never give up on the

fight to improve outdoor opportunities. I am Conservation is in the heart of anglers and hunters who volunteer, donate, mentor, or in anyway, lead by example to quietly and humbly give back to nature. The OFAH promotes many ways to make an outdoors difference. While OFAH membership is certainly the most popular option, the OFAH conservation mandate cannot be delivered on membership dues alone. Through the purchase of OFAH Conservation Lottery tickets, donations to OFAH wildlife calendars and other products, as well as participation in the OFAH monthly giving program, about 50 percent of OFAH members proudly contribute dollars beyond their annual membership fee. Some supporters prefer “membership only” and we respect their wishes to be removed from OFAH campaigns ahead of standard membership renewal reminders. It’s also important that we hear from passionate anglers and hunters who believe, as does the OFAH, that we must hold governments responsible to make sure our tax dollars

are properly reinvested for the future of fish and wildlife. Nevertheless, anglers and hunters are motivated by the potential for new outdoor opportunities – a bright outdoors future that the government alone may never be able to afford. Guided by Purpose OFAH involvement in enhancing our natural resources is not unlike the work of other great charities that enhance community services, including healthcare. Yes, taxpayers have a right to keep pressure on the government for more support, but at the same time, we must backup our tireless community volunteers who help provide various sport and wellness centre needs as well as essential hospital services and equipment such as CT scans and MRI machines. No matter if it is health care or conservation, progress is achieved when more people find opportunities to give a little extra. To recognize the “extra” help from OFAH members, we take the time for personalized, hand-written notes to special conservation donors, and we make sure that we remember what topics motivated their OFAH support. We are paying close attention. Like the paper boy who takes the time to get to know his neighbours, the OFAH is

Bear Down By Amanda Lynn Mayhew Founder of Ontario Women’s Hunting Association TV Host – Just Hunt

I have been bear hunting my entire adult life and can say with confidence I am pretty knowledgeable and successful when it comes to setting up for bear. May 2017 as I was preparing to film the second TV season of Just Hunt in Manitouwadge, Northern Ontario surprised us with a snowfall of up to 4 inches and a very quiet week in the bush.

The trip there had been a long 12 hours driving north on the Trans Canada Highway, then another hour into town followed by another hour down a bush road that was barely passable. But we made it; set up camp and off we went to check the baits. April 30 – Season isn’t quite open yet, but let’s see if anything is happening at the baits. Nothing hit. May 1 – Excessive snowfall makes for an interesting morning hunt. No tracks

where we are standing. We don’t get that in Northern Ontario. Next day – I harvested a 500 lb. bear with a 19¾ inch skull, 6 foot from tail to tip, at 17 yards, on the ground, with a .300 Winchester WSM. Everything happens for a reason. Adventures in the making, memories to keep and stories to share!

May 2 – 7 – In the quest for a bear in Northern Ontario, all week spent baiting, scouting, tracking, driving and absolutely nothing. However, we came face to face with a cow moose and other animals in the area. What a bust! I have never been skunked on a bear hunt. A new opportunity came a few weeks later when I had the chance to fly to Alberta and test my bear hunting skills out in another province. Off the plane and into the truck and we are off and 4 hours later, taking pictures of bears in the bait site a few yards away from

Anyone who has been part of a longstanding group of hunting or angling friends knows that often the best part of the trip are the evenings gathered together in fellowship – when the events of the day are shared and the tales of past adventures are relived.

But first the disclaimer:

His father, brother and uncles had long since passed on and he, who was once the youngest of the group, was now the eldest. In-laws, nephews and their sons made up most of the family camp now days – and they all called him Uncle Frank. The time he spent amongst family was more important to him now than meat in the freezer; although, he had enjoyed more than his share of good luck over the years. He particularly took a shine to, and liked to talk with young nephew Andy, who had a good head on his shoulders, a good sense of humour and told some great tales. Turning off the highway onto the dirtgravel tracks that wound through the pines towards the camp, Frank marvelled at how quickly it seemed the trip north to his destination had been. He pulled out his gun case, picked a few cartridges out of his old duffel bag and headed down the path to the source of the shooting. He was noticed as soon as he came into the clearing, with everyone saying almost in unison “Hi Uncle Frank”. “What are you boys doing” Frank said as he took in the scene – an improvised gun

Wordless, the group looked around at each other until Bill got up from the chair saying “that’s it for me” and headed up the trail behind Uncle Frank with everyone following. A beautiful, opening morning found Frank at his favourite stand, sitting on an old stump alongside a big rock; on a point of land just to the left of where the bush opened up to a small clearing. Taking in the fall splendor of his surroundings and with his thoughts to himself, Frank silently hoped that no one would harvest an animal too early into the hunt. A few hours later as he sat watching the edge of the bush with a crisp autumn breeze in his face, he started to get a bit of a chill and reached over for his duffel bag and his thermos of hot coffee, he then realized he had left the thermos sitting on the kitchen table back at the cabin. He did however have a can of soup and a little butane camp-stove that he always carried in case of an emergency. “What the heck.” he thought, and lit up the little stove, opened the can and set it on to heat up. He had just found a spoon in his bag and was beginning to give the soup a stir, when he heard a noise and noticed some of his fellow hunters coming out of the bush towards him. They all began grinning as they realized what Uncle Frank was doing. “Uncle Frank” Andy said as he approached, “Why didn’t you take a shot at that buck we drove out? You must have seen him, he ran right past you!” Frank just leaned over his soup and continued stirring, then said, “I seen him okay, but that deer was going too darn fast.”

Frank picked up a small rock and gave his front sight a little tap, slipped in a cartridge and from a standing position sent the can flying.” That’s better” he said, then slipped the gun back into its case and started back up the trail to the cabin.

“How fast was he going Uncle Frank”, questioned Andy. “Well Andy”, said Frank while still stirring his soup, “If what they say is true and the world really is round, that deer ought to be passing by here again in a couple of days.” Everyone laughed, but sure enough as fate would have it; two days later Uncle Frank harvested a nice 8-point buck. When the hunt was over and everyone was packed up and saying their goodbyes, Andy approached his old uncle and said, “Uncle Frank, do you ever suppose there will come a time when we get so old we won’t feel like doing this anymore?”

Continued from Page 136 Frank thought for a moment then replied, “Andy, I never really thought about that. But if it ever does happen – I’ll let you know.” When Frank got back home, unpacked and had put everything away, he headed down to JP’s Bar & Grill. Frank wasn’t much of a drinker any more, but he still liked a good cold draught beer and the company of his many friends who met regularly at JP’s. Besides, they also served a pretty good meal there; especially on those days he didn’t feel like cooking for himself. Frank also occasionally liked attending Sunday morning services at the Congregational Holiness Baptist Church, where the pastor was Dr. Jack McVickery. Everyone thought Dr. McVickery was a Doctor of Divinity and he never corrected them. But in reality, in an earlier lifetime before Jack found God, he was a dentist. Frank believed in God, but he wasn’t really what most would refer to as a religious person. Frank’s main reason for attending the Baptist church was to listen to the choir where his favorite niece with her beautiful voice sang. Coming out of church he was met on the front steps by none other than the church gossip Miss Irma McVety. “Mister Randolph”, she addressed Frank. “Myself and other members of the congregation have been discussing what we feel is very inappropriate behaviour on your part, for a member of our congregation. We have noticed your truck parked in front of that horrible tavern and everyone is aware of what you are doing in there.”

Frank replied, “You have a pleasant day Miss McVety”, and walked to his truck. Later that evening after a meal at JP’s Bar & Grill, Frank drove up the street and pulled up to the curb in front of Miss McVety’s house; got out of his Ford truck, locked the doors and walked home.

Asian carps: A Threat to Our Great Lakes By: Chase Guindon

What are ‘Invasive Species?’ There are a number of fish species in our lakes and rivers that we have enjoyed angling for since we were children: bass, walleye, and perch, just to name a few. However, these species are at risk when invasive species, such as Asian carps, spiny waterfleas, and rusty crayfish are introduced to healthy ecosystems. Invasive species are plants, animals, and micro-organisms introduced by human action outside of their natural past or present distribution whose introduction or spread threatens the environment, the economy, or society, including human health (Government of Canada, 2004). Asian carps pose as one of the most significant threats to our Great Lakes and their thriving biodiversity. There are four species of Asian carps (Silver, Bighead, Black, and Grass) and each of these species are currently regulated as prohibited in Ontario under the Invasive Species Act, 2015. These fish were brought

to the United States in the 1960’s and 1970’s for use in the aquaculture industry and following flooding events, they escaped into the Mississippi River basin and quickly established in American inland waters. They have since begun to spread north towards the Great Lakes, but are not established in Canadian waters. Recently, only one of these carp species (Grass Carp) has been found in the Great Lakes, and sightings are fairly infrequent. However, if they are given a chance to establish a population, they will cause serious ecological, economic, and physical harm.

Why are Asian carps a problem? Most of these problems come from the fact that these invasive carps really like to eat, as they can consume up to 40% of their body weight in food each day feeding on aquatic plants and plankton. They are such prolific eaters that, once they move into an area, there is not enough food left for native fish to sustain healthy populations. This decrease in the food availability makes it easy for the Asian carps to outcompete other

fish, causing our native populations in these areas to decline or disappear completely. This loss of native species will reduce biodiversity, making the ecosystem less resilient to other stressors, such as disease. In addition to the loss of native species abundance and health, Ontario’s commercial and recreational industries that depend on the ecological heath of the Great Lakes will be negatively impacted. Activities such as fishing, hunting, boating, and wildlife viewing will all become less popular in areas where Asian carps have crowded out other fish. Additionally, if established, Asian carps can also increase algal blooms and this algae can reduce the health of the lake and affect the frequency at which the public visits beaches and shorelines. It is estimated that activities in and around the Great Lakes basin contribute over 13 million dollars annually to the Canadian economy and any loss in these sectors could impact the livelihood of many Canadians. Silver Carp, in particular, have been known to cause physical harm to humans while out on the water. When startled by vibrations, such as that of a boat motor, they can jump up to 3 meters out of the water, sometimes knocking boaters out of their watercraft. You may have seen footage of these events on the internet, or your local news. There have been cases where boaters and water-skiers in areas of the Mississippi and Illinois rivers have been seriously injured by the jumping fish.

Recreational boaters and anglers have a vital role to play and it is crucial that everybody does their part to ensure our Great Lakes are protected from the spread of aquatic invasive species. Here are 5 easy things you can do:

1. Learn how to identify Asian carps and how to prevent the introduction or spread of these unwanted species. 2. Never buy or keep live Asian carps. It is against the law to keep an Asian carp as a pet, use it as bait, or have a live Asian carp in your possession. 3. Donâ€™t release any live fish into Ontario lakes or rivers. If you are fishing and incidentally catch an Asian carp, you must destroy it. Do not return it to the water.

4. If you have any information about the illegal importing, distribution or sale of live Asian carps, report it immediately to the MNRF TIPS line at 1-877-TIPS-MNR (847-7667) toll-free anytime. You can also call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). 5. If youâ€™ve seen an Asian carp or other invasive species in the wild, please contact the toll free Invading Species Hotline at 1-800-563-7711, or visit EDDMapS Ontario to report a sighting.

It is available as a free app through the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store. Ltd.; the Canadian manufacturers of Len Thompson Lures. Thompson-Pallister purchased Northern King’s name, intellectual property and — most importantly — all of the original die sets which mold the unique shape and action of each NK spoon. As a fourth generation family business, ThompsonPallister was thrilled to acquire a company with similar values. “Len Thompson, my great grandfather, also created his own unique fishing spoon which turned into a successful legacy brand” explains Brad Pallister, President.

In 1984, Patsy Distaffen created the original Northern King spoon. A tool and die specialist with Xerox and an avid hunter and fisherman, Patsy used his passion to develop Northern King. He recognized the need for a trolling lure that wouldn’t spin while being trolled at higher speeds. He spent countless hours refining the shape and details of his incredibly successful lure design. “When we cleaned out my parent’s house, in every single room, every single floor, there was files… because he was always tinkering with dies or the lures or something. We had shoe boxes full of files.” Says daughter Beverly Cahill. The Northern King lure grabbed the attention of many charter boat captains and derby fisherman on Lake Ontario. By word of mouth, Patsy went from producing 20,000 lures a year to 150,000 in just four years by 1988. The company enjoyed many years of success under Pat’s leadership. “When my dad died, it was his passion. All of us kids knew how to make the lures, we knew his customer

General Objectives of the QDMA • To serve as a collective and responsible voice for white-tailed deer hunters and managers. • To improve the quality of deer herds and hunting experiences through sound deer management. • To promote hunter education and participation through the conducting of meetings, seminars, and demonstrations, and through the production of educational materials such as books, videos, and the QDMA’s quarterly journal, Quality Whitetails. • To promote and financially support deer research and management projects relating to white-tailed deer management and/or recreational hunting. • To enhance the public image of deer hunters and deer hunting by providing a code of ethics for members to follow.

Our Mission The Quality Deer Management Association (QDMA) is a national charitable wildlife conservation organization and the leading advocate of the QDM philosophy. The QDMA’s mission is to ensure the future of white-tailed deer, wildlife habitat and our hunting heritage. Originally founded in 1988 as a state-based organization in South Carolina, widespread interest from other states and several foreign countries resulted in the expansion to a national organization in 1990. In 1998, the QDMA moved its headquarters to northeast Georgia and today is among the fastest growing conservation organizations in the nation with nearly 50,000 members in all 50 states, 6 provinces and several foreign countries. Among the QDMA’s current members are nearly 3000 of the worlds leading deer management professionals. Their collective knowledge enables the QDMA and its members to remain at the forefront of deer biology, research, and management. The QDMA also has a network of more than 180 Branches (organized groups of volunteer members) in more than 34 states and 3 provinces with many others forming. QDMA Branches actively promote the philosophy of QDM and the mission of the QDMA in their areas and hold educational and social events to unite like-minded sportsmen in this common goal.
