Welcome to our 34th Annual Owen Sound Salmon Spectacular. The Owen Sound Salmon Spectacular committee are actively planning and very excited to once again share in some great fishing adventures and activities to finish off the summer. We are thrilled to have the theme days back with McDonald’s Restaurant Owen Sound Kids Day, The Sun Times Seniors afternoon, Bayshore Broadcasting Radio and Giant Tiger Bingo afternoon, Molson Coors Day, Cabela’s Day, Yamaha Day and Breakfast with Santa. We also have a full slate of local entertainment to perform like the Beckett’s and returning tribute acts such as Shania Twin and the Neil Diamond Tribute. One of our special highlights this year will be the Fishing Friendzy Pond allowing kids 16 years of age and younger to have a mini fishing derby in the Molson Coors and Liuna Local 1059 Derby Tent.

I truly thank those who have supported us in the past 33 years and have stayed with our Festival to support our ongoing conservation and Fish Hatchery Program. Wherever in the country you are from, we hope you spend some relaxing time and enjoy our beautiful community. Please support those who support us, be well and most of all enjoy yourself. I look forward to getting together again soon to enjoy the great bounty of our Community and what our local businesses have to offer. I wish all the anglers the best of luck! The Salmon Spectacular Co-Chairs I would like to welcome everyone to the 34th Annual Owen Sound Salmon Spectacular on behalf of my fellow co-chairs and the Sydenham Sportsmen’s Association. Last year, we experienced a scaled down event in keeping with the Grey Bruce Health Unit and the Province of Ontario’s COVID-19 Mandates. There was no live entertainment and themed days such as, Kids Day and Seniors Day were cancelled. We could not enjoy our “fisherman’s breakfast” with Elvis or tap our toes to the incredible music by the Beckett Family. Though they were greatly missed, the derby was still run safely and successfully. We had 21,000 people pass through the tent and 2900 fish were entered over the course of the 10 day event. Our fabulous fish fries were distributed

by a curbside drive thru resulting in a huge success as we served well over 2100 fish dinners over the course of the 2 Saturdays. This year, we are pleased to go forth with our full-scale Salmon Spectacular only bigger and better. We welcome back the entertainment and community focused theme days along with the regular dine in tent style fish fries. Our food concession, bar and merchandise booth will be operating as usual. We have confirmed the popular Fishing Friendzy pond where we will be holding the first annual fishing derby in the Molson Coors and Liuna Local 1059 Derby tent for Kids 16 years of age and under. We would like to thank you for your continued support making it possible to host this grand event. Your support directly aids our hatchery and stocking programs which in turn, provide the healthy fish you catch in the derby. Many other projects of the Sydenham Sportsmen’s Association benefit greatly as well. Last year, we were able to complete two waterfowl pond digs in partnering with Ducks Unlimited, as wetlands are disappearing at an alarming rate across the Province.

Our dedicated committee and volunteers are the backbone of the Salmon Spectacular and they have our utmost respect and extreme gratitude. We simply could not put on the derby without them. We are excited for the growth of the Salmon Spectacular over the years. It is endearing to see people that have fished the derby as youngsters now bring their own children out to experience this family friendly event. We are excited to see more and more female anglers weighing in fish and getting more involved in the sport of fishing. This growth is due in part, to the unwavering community support and our incredibly loyal sponsors. Thank you. We are thrilled to add another boat to the prize board! Last year we introduced the Fred Geberdt Memorial Boat Package for the heaviest rainbow trout. This year we are adding another boat to win from the Derby entry tickets. FEDERAL MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT Welcome all anglers and participants to the 34th annual Salmon Spectacular! As the Member of Parliament for Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound, I am excited to once again be a part of the annual Owen Sound Salmon Spectacular. As you know, this event would not be possible without the strong commitment of so many volunteers. Their hard work planning and running this event year after year is worthy of the utmost recognition. It is a true delight to welcome so many visitors to our region to take part in this incredible event. The Owen Sound Salmon Spectacular draws local, national, and international visitors. The Salmon Spectacular has always played an important tourism role in the region, and it certainly continues to be a great summer community event and economic driver. After more than two years of the pandemic, I am optimistic and encouraged to see a full return of the derby. I know we are all excited to showcase some of the best parts of Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound, as well as the hospitality of the residents who call this region home. If you are visiting Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound, I encourage you to explore all that the region has to offer, and if you call our area home, please take the opportunity to show visiting anglers and their families the incredible beauty of the region, as we have a truly unique spot in Ontario and Canada. I would also like to highlight the success of last year’s 33rd annual Owen Sound Salmon Spectacular. Despite uncertainty last summer, organizers were able to put on an incredible event that gave hope, respite, and enjoyment to so many people. Once again, this year’s event would not be possible without the unwavering dedication of the volunteers and organizers. Thank you to the Sydenham Sportsmen’s Association, and the Bruce Peninsula Sportsmen’s Association who not only commit a huge effort towards the Salmon Spectacular, but also continue critical conservation activities all year long. I always enjoy getting my hands dirty with both the Sydenham Sportsmen’s Association, and the Bruce Peninsula Sportsmen’s Association. I encourage anyone with an interest to assist the community and these organizations, to reach out and offer your help as you can. COUNTY OF BRUCE As the Owen Sound Harbour bustles with activity for the 34th Annual Owen Sound Salmon Spectacular, it is my pleasure as mayor of the Town of South Bruce Peninsula, to welcome participants, residents and tourists to a much-anticipated annual summer event. This fun and exciting angling competition, organized and hosted by the Sydenham Sportsmen’s Association (SSA) continues to grow in popularity thanks to the creativity and dedication shown by its members and the hundreds of volunteers, sponsors and participants who contribute to its success. The Salmon Spectacular has reached beyond the angling community to include so many other facets of the population. People who love good music, good food, the thrill of friendly, sportsman-like competition and a chance to connect with others in the community, are never disappointed with the variety of events provided throughout these lively days. The Sydenham Sportsmen’s Association (SSA) is truly a unique organization with one foot placed in historical tradition and the other foot placed firmly in ecological concerns for the future. Members continue to foster interest and participation in the time-honoured skills of hunting and fishing, which were such an integral part of life in the past. They also recognize the need for environmental consideration of future generations and fulfill this recognition in several different ways. The Salmon Spectacular is an important fundraising event which allows them continued community outreach through education, conservation projects and the encouragement of skills which are still valued for their connection to nature, sport and self-sufficiency – skills that just can’t be learned on a computer! The SSA is a special group which gives back to the community and also reminds us to be self-aware in this wonderful, wild, natural world of ours that we sometimes forget to “see”! I hope that visitors and residents alike will take advantage of the holiday atmosphere of the Salmon Spectacular to explore Bruce County and all of her lovely small towns. From the Scottish flavours of Kincardine, to historic Teeswater and Paisley, or the gentle shores of Southampton and beautiful Sauble Beach. Take a trip up the picturesque Bruce Peninsula through Wiarton to Tobermory, our quaint shops, cafes and stunning bike & hiking trails await you. We live in an incredible corner of the world and we want to share it with you!

The Municipality of Meaford is delighted to celebrate the Salmon Spectacular this year. It has been a while since we have been able as a community to participate in-person and share experiences. The Salmon Spectacular is a great way to kick things off. Each year, the Salmon Spectacular brings together people of all ages and skills who love the thrill of the catch. It is so wonderful that everyone is welcome to participate and join in the excitement of reeling in the catch of the day. So off we headed to Walkerton, 3 guys each weighing 260 Ibs in a 2 door Chevette with a canoe on top. Oh yes, I forgot about the beer. We had so much fun and memories made for life. Dave Reilly and John Strba, we all miss you both and our fishing trips go into the fishing memory bank forever. I leave you with pictures on page 13 of the good old times and memories of the Saugeen River with my highschool buddies. As we go forward and continue to make our fishing and hunting memories please take the time to enjoy every day that we cherish the great outdoors. Hey kids on Monday August 29 you can even have breakfast with Santa and the theme day is Christmas in August with great entertainment from the Becketts. I also want to make a special note of some exceptional people who have taken the time to write articles for our Sportsmen’s Annual Magazine. Once again Jack Osadzuk has given us the joy of reading his articles on past and present of the great outdoors. So many people look forward to reading his articles each year and we all wonder what adventures Jack will take us on this year. I recently made contact with a good friend Steve Busey from highschool. I asked Steve to do an article for this year Sportsmen’s Annual Magazine. He graciously accepted and you can enjoy reading his article about Memories of a Booming Georgian Bay Fishery on page 122, Steve worked hard in putting this article together from pen to paper. Well done Steve and we are sure to have many more articles from Steve in

the future. I also want to mention another individual who has been part of our event over the last several years. Amanda Lynn Mayhew has gone above and beyond her true commitment toward her local roots. Amanda Lynn Mayhew is one tough outdoorswoman that is a product of Northern Ontario, and the Creator of Just Hunt INC. This young woman has proven her worth as an athlete, inspirational speaker, angler, power sports enthusiast, and sport shooting advocate, and a hunter whose

mission it is to pass on the passion to our future. Please welcome her to the Owen Sound Salmon Spectacular and I hope you enjoy her 2 great articles she has written for this year’s magazine that can be found on pages 28 and 78. Amanda recently lost her dad to cancer, a feeling I can relate to each and every day. Amanda we are so deeply sorry about the loss of your dad and I am sure you have many great memories to treasurer and remember him going

Recently the world celebrated International Women’s Day and it would be remiss of me not to mention, a welcome and congratulations to our newest Co-Chair to the derby committee Stacey Urbshott. Stacey brings with her a hard working background and many great fishing experiences with her husband Gerry and father Dennis. You can also read her article about a fishing adventure on page 144. Please help me in welcoming Stacey to her new role as Co-Chair for this year‘s Owen Sound Salmon Spectacular. It is a very special year for Sydenham Sportsmen’s Association (SSA) as the organization will celebrate its 75th Anniversary since its name change in 1947 from the Grey & Bruce Counties Fish and Game Protective Association. We look forward to celebrating through many club functions over the 2022 season. Finally, I want to take this time and thank all our sponsors and volunteers for their dedication and commitment to the Owen Sound Salmon Spectacular. Without their hard work and long volunteer hour this event wouldn’t happen. Once again, I leave you with some pictures to show you how much fun we have each and every day creating many long lasting memories to cherish forever. When I started to write this editorial at the beginning of my article I spoke about the many memories of the great outdoors. I want to leave you with a picture of my dad (Fred Geberdt), brother (Craig Geberdt) and myself on our way up Moose Hunting enjoying a beautiful sunny day while stopping to take a break on the beautiful shores of Lake Superior. Random Thoughts Often, I find that a couple of coincidental occurrences set my mind and memory into gear and I have trouble putting the brakes on when it comes to spending time thinking in the past and sharing my doting ways with everyone, whether they want to listen to me or not.

But then, I recalled Lloyd Cartwright, who for 2 decades also wrote a weekly column for the Walkerton Herald Times, under the banner “Reflections by the Cordwainer”. I met him a couple of times when Stan Brown Printers, the printing company my late business partner Nels Maher and I had owned, produced the first two of four volumes of “The Cordwainers Scrapbooks”, a historical collection of Cartwright’s published

Lloyd did however refresh some other old memories, when a couple of familiar names popped up in his articles. Sparky Weiler, who lived in the Walkerton area and who by coincidence, also wrote a column and articles mostly about sports for the Walkerton Herald Times. Sparky was a sales representative for Carling Breweries, brewers of Carling Red Cap Ale. Sparky actively promoted the Carling Conservation Club and their motto “Yours to Enjoy – Yours to Protect”. He travelled the area, showing Carling’s collection of hunting, fishing and nature films and distributing copies of the Carling Conservation Club Digest. Including well received visits to the Sydenham Sportsmen’s general meetings. This was during a period in time when black & white films were the norm, although some

of the films had also begun to be produced in colour. There was no TV signal in our area and so there were none of the hunting, fishing and outdoor shows we have now become accustomed to seeing on the networks. I can’t imagine that anglers and hunters would pack a room to watch an outdoor film nowadays. But back then, it was a big deal.

on and took off in hot pursuit following the bandits. The chase went on for a while, that is until the bank robbers noticed Ray. In turn, Ray noticed that they were shooting at him. At that period of time, Ray was still teaching in Owen Sound at Strathcona Senior Public School and the next day at school found a crowd of students gathered around Ray’s truck inspecting the bullet holes. Fellow SSA members, who knew Ray Patterson, continue to miss his company, especially during the Salmon Spectacular.

For a number of years in past editions of the Sportsmen’s Annual Magazine poems about outhouses found their way into the text. Following is the old poem written by the late Irwin Lobsinger for his weekly column in the Walkerton Herald Times. I am sure that Lobie would have been both pleased and amused that this particular poem of his lives on and continues to bring pleasure to others, by our including it in the history of outhouse poetry appearing in the SSA’s Sportsmen’s Annual Magazine.

“Nature Unspoiled – Yours to Enjoy – Yours To Protect” Just as the Sydenham Sportsmen’s Association was formed 75-years ago in 1947, so was The Carling Conservation Club. Registered as a company governing under the Canadian Corporations Act – Part II – 11 July 1947 (Friday) The registered office address of the Carling Conservation Club on that date was 79 St. Clair Ave. East, Toronto 7, Ontario, Canada. Other Corporations (Peripheral Corporations) at that same address were: • The Carling Breweries Limited. • Carling-O’Keefe Breweries of Canada Limited. • Calgary Brewing Company Limited. • Canadian Breweries Transport Limited. • O’Keefe Foundation. • The Performing Arts Corporation Limited. The Carling Conservation Club’s main focus was education – mandating for better conservation and encouraging good sportsmanship as reflected in their many outdoor films, publications, presentations and also by their sponsorships and awards throughout Canada and many of the US states. The Carling Conservation Award was for many years presented annually to a deserving outstanding conservationist at the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters Annual Meeting and Fish and Wildlife Conference. According to Wikipedia, “the company’s 1840 origin’s can be traced to Canadian Breweries, which bought the Carling Brewery in 1930 and the O’Keefe Brewery in 1934. Heritage is my Life "My father gave me the greatest gift anyone could give another person, he believed in me." - Jim Valvano Hunting is in my blood, it is who I am. Growing up wandering through and exploring the landscapes in various remote northern towns, I assumed that was how

everyone lived. Sure, we had grocery stores, but the outings and adventures of fishing, hunting and camping was just a regular way of life for us. Hunting and fishing are my biggest passions, and I am so grateful to have cultivated the appreciation and understanding of what a critical role these traditional activities play in our communities for conservation, sustainability, and economic heritage through my childhood life!

It really wasn't until my late twenties when I had migrated to Southern Ontario that I realized not everyone lived life in the outdoors. Fortunately, I was able to maintain my outdoors-based lifestyle despite relocating to a more urban area.

In fact, I started making a big deal about my hunting and fishing ventures with my young boys each fall on social media (which back then was 'MySpace', ICQ and the beginning of Facebook). Embracing the outdoors was my way of life and I was fiercely proud of it.

This pride and need to preserve our heritage was instilled by my parents, particularly my father Alexander Mayhew. Dad would often take me along with him on his wild adventures - like creeping through tightly-spaced tamarack trees in our pickup truck to ambush flocks of partridge, or troll for miles through twisty, rocky waterways to hook those sweet Pickeral dinners. Dad loved to spend hours sitting around backyard

firepits and campfires with friends and family telling tales about his excursions and what he had learned, always teaching through storytelling. In my own adventures when I was able to successfully harvest a big game animal, I always called my Dad and told him about it. 'Keep it up!', 'Awesome', 'I love you', were always the words that rang through the phone line, which meant the world to

me because I was often hunting solo and making my Dad proud. This sweater shown in the photo of my father and I is symbolic and has great significance to me and my family. It has probably seen more outdoor adventures then years I have been alive. It belonged to my father, given to him by my maternal grandmother in 1972 and it has joined me

on most of my hunting trips. You won't find it in any catalogues or fashion articles, but this classic knit is a part of who I am and where I came from. These are the origins and symbols of our legacy, and they begin to illustrate the deep meaning in my soul regarding where I come from. I am proud of my parents, the way we were raised and how I am able to pass that on to the next generations. While my boys have grown and internalized the love for nature and outdoor living, I have helped positively influence my nieces Kass and Anneliese and nephew Tristan and even my granddaughter baby Chloe to learn this love as well, but also, the hundreds of children that are involved with the tradeshows, range days, and THAT Hunting Girl TV. Our history, morals, ethics, and pride - it is all that defines us as families, individuals, and keepers of this earth. Remember to stay humble, and true to our outdoor roots - share stories and make memories that will last a lifetime. Our world is magnificent and how much time we have to enjoy it is uncertain, and can change in the snap of a finger. Be who you are and share your knowledge, mentor many, exude positive experiences and always smile.

Now nestled off Bruce Road 13 on North Acres Road, the Hatchery can produce an upward of 120,000 rainbow and 40,000 brown trout a year. Since 1962 the BPSA has stocked an estimated 3.5 million fish into these waters to help sustain and assist for recreational sport fishing in our community.

As expected, schools of local anglers were all gunning to have the best of bragging rights in our water’s. Updates had been posted on social media pages throughout each day of the derby. Being able to bring back a local fishing derby to assist with Capital Expenditures for the Hatchery was received with great support. This is what makes our derby so special, it is a community run and community supported Derby. Having the support and donations from local business as well as supporters across Ontario was overwhelming. Knowing that every sponsor

had their best interest in supporting the Bruce Peninsula Sportsmen’s Association Hatchery Program was truly heartfelt. Being able to raise funds for one of the longest running community hatcheries in Ontario always gives you that sense of accomplishment towards conservation. The derby is now running in its second year and by the time you read this we will have already had our second derby under our belt. Again, this year we have had even more support and we are looking to make the derby the best it can be and continue to grow every year.

In my mind, it seems like not that many years ago it was very easy to recognize what conservation club each individual belonged to when attending gatherings of hunters and anglers – such as the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters Annual Meeting and Fish and Wildlife Conference or the Quarterly and Annual OFAH Zone meetings and Outdoor Shows.. OFAH Quarterly Zone meetings were well attended affairs. Often groups of members – each group representing a dozen or more member clubs would be in attendance. Each group of individuals would be wearing the shirt of their club’s chosen colour – adorned with their home club crest as well as an array of personal achievement & recognition crests, and membership crests of the OFAH and other conservation organizations. I

well remember meeting rooms filled with members in coloured shirts in various shades of blue, green, yellow, brown, grey, red and black.

The Sydenham Sportsmen’s Association membership voted to use a solid red as their official club shirt colour. Red had long been a recognized shirt colour worn by outdoors people – sometimes plain or in various plaid patterns. It had also – at that time before the colour blaze orange was developed – been considered as the colour one wore to be better seen and recognized. SSA members were able to order red shirts in their size through SSA member Sid Pearce at Grafton’s Men’s Wear in Owen Sound. Shirts had to be dry cleaned as removing and replacing the crests each time the shirt was washed was more than most wives would tolerate and many of the crests were silk screened on felt material that didn’t do well in the washing machine. Over time, vests to display club and other crests began to replace the coloured shirts and over more time, many members of clubs began to leave their coloured shirts at home and dress for meetings in their own preferences. The orange and brown coloured 1947 Sydenham Sportsmen’s

Association (SSA) crest was the new association’s first membership crest and was followed by a new design the following four years in various colours – red in 1948, blue in 1949, yellow in 1950 and green in 1951. The annual dated crests were to provide proof of membership in the SSA for landowners to recognize club members and allow access for fishing under the recent SSA/ Landowner agreement. These crests were costly to the SSA and their silkscreen on felt composition did not stand up to the elements when worn on fishing or hunting jackets. In 1952 there was no dated membership crest. That year, a new Sydenham Sportsmen’s Association crest was designed and developed and distributed to the membership. Interesting was the fact that the association’s name was played with a bit. The letter “s” was omitted from the end of the word” Sportsmen’s” and the word “Association” was also omitted. This was done to make enough space to include the city name “Owen Sound”. Although over the years the crest has undergone some tweaking, size changes and production modifications, it is the same design still used to this day as the SSA’s official logo. The year 1953 was the first year the SSA began supplying its members with yearly dated button-pins to wear so landowners could recognize the wearer as an SSA member. Members usually wore the pin on their fishing hat, keeping it handy and visible to see. The 1953 button-pin was a small white pin with the wording Sydenham Sportsmen around the edge and the date in the middle. It was highly criticized as being too small to see from any distance. Addressing this problem, the 1954 pin underwent a size and design change. It grew another 1/2” in diameter, with the wording “Sydenham Sportsmen” around the edge and the word

“MEMBER” in large letters across the centre with the year 1954 below it. Also included above the word “member” was the acronym O.F.A.H. (Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters). This button size and design was used for the year 1954 and continued dated yearly in a range of various colours over the following ten years. In 1965 the SSA button-pin size reverted to the smaller original 1953 button-pin size with the wording “Sydenham Sportsmen Assoc.” including the “OFAH” acronym around the outside edge. The middle of the pin contained a stylized rendering of a Canada goose in flight and the year of issue below it. This final button-pin size and design was issued to SSA members for 51 years in a variety of colours from and including the years 1965 to 2015 when it was voted by the membership to discontinue the further issuing of button-pins to members, effective at the end of the year 2016. The Sydenham Sportsmen’s Association has produced many other pins and crests and certificates over the years to celebrate special occasions or acknowledge achievements in Junior programs, fishing contests, shooting sports or to recognize the efforts and contributions to the organization by individuals. No doubt this practice of recognition will continue into the future.

There is also no doubt in my mind – that members will continue to wear with pride the historic SSA club crest – the logo that has been the hallmark of the Sydenham Sportsmen’s Association for all these past years.

As I have been unable to find anything to confirm or deny that, I will continue to repeat that he was the designer until proven otherwise.

Note: Many years ago, I was told on more than one occasion that SSA Member John Landen was the designer of the SSA crest.

The late Os McArthur proudly wearing his SSA colours until his health left him no longer able to participate - but his heart was with the SSA until his passing. At that time, Os may have been the last remaining member of the former Grey and Bruce Counties Fish and Game Protective Association.

Successful Fish Stocking A Team Effort Owen Sound: This story begins in the early nineties. I was new to this region and was getting fishing information from the late Grant Ferris on the Grey-Bruce Outdoors fishing board.

Grant lived in Port Elgin and belonged to the Lake Huron Fishing Club (LHFC). He put in long hours as the "Outdoors Editor" for the Owen Sound Sun Times, a volunteer position. He also told me he was heavily involved in his club's annual Chantry Fishing Derby. In addition, Grant spent long hours taking

pictures at the Salmon Spectacular Tent. He had promised to give me "some good downrigging hints." For several years he did. This was one result of his training.

I arrived at the tent at noon. Grant, sporting a big welcoming smile, had just arrived and said he would be there until the weigh scale closed. He did this for the ten days of the derby. I asked Grant if this was a volunteer gig? He said "oh yes it’s all about the fish and raising money for fish stocking." He added "it’s not work it’s fun and worthwhile."

The Lake Huron Club, with hatcheries in Kincardine and Port Elgin, stocks Rainbow and Brown Trout and Salmon. Club volunteers have being stocking since 1983.

But not all has been smooth sailing. In 2011 the Lake Huron Club had financial difficulties. They needed money to feed their hatchery fish. The neighbouring Bruce Peninsula Sportsmen's Association (BPSA), on a motion put fourth by yours truly, agreed to gift the Lake Huron folks with "a no strings donation" of 5-thousand dollars. The BPSA team delivered the cheque after Christmas 2011.

Lake Huron Club President Al Wilkins on the right accepted the gift from left to right Gord Smith, Tim Lahey and "Santa" Ray Marklevitz of BPSA. A few years later, much to the surprise of BPSA members, the Lake Huron executive returned the money at a BPSA meeting. After all the 5-thousand was a "gift."

There are many examples of our fish stocking clubs helping each other.

The Lake Huron Club and members of the Ontario Steelheaders for over twenty-five years, have provided fish eggs and milt to several stocking clubs no charge "for the good of our sports fishery." The work is done by volunteers at Denny's Dam supplying rainbow and salmon eggs to three clubs: the Sydenham Sportsmen’s, The Bruce Peninsula Sportsmen and the Bluewater Anglers in Sarnia.

Says Lake Huron Club President Dave Myette "the newest club Steeldreams, has exploded onto the scene....in just a few years has donated tens of thousands of dollars to local charities, and all of the local clubs. Another newer club is Outdoors Adventures, whose volunteers work tirelessly with the Lake Huron Club, to help protect and preserve our resources."

The Owen Sound based Sydenham Sportsmen's Association joins the chorus of those praising the team effort of our fish stocking clubs. ....." the BPSA raises and lowers the Derby tent but the reality is that it is and always has been, a do or die situation for the life of the Salmon Spectacular. It is no easy task for these “youngsters“ but experience pays off and their reliability is unquestionable.

Twice in recent years BPSA had water flow and temperature challenges at its hatchery west of Wiarton. Both times sister club the Sydenham Sportsmen’s (SSA) cared for the Wiarton club's trout at their hatchery until the BPSA issues were resolved.

Fin clipping fish before stocking helps identify them as stockers when they are caught. For decades Barrow and District Sport Fishing Association members helped BPSA with its fin clipping.

For many years BPSA volunteers helped volunteer at the big tent home of the annual 10-day Owen Sound Salmon Spectacular Derby.

They also presented several financial donations for the BPSA stocking program. BPSA continues to stock Judge's Creek at Barrow Bay, even though the Barrow Bay club has disbanded. This club has stocked fish in Colpoy's Bay since the sixties.

BPSA volunteers also raise and lower the giant derby tent. In return the Sydenham Sportsmen’s Association provides thousands of yearling salmon for BPSA members to stock in Colpoy's Bay.

We can't say enough about the support and co-operation we have seen over many decades all aimed at trying to create as many fishing opportunities as possible. Each fish stocked benefits our community big time. Just look at the numbers and you see the benefit of our volunteer run stocking efforts."

Resources and Forestry (MNRF). Ministry staff work with stocking clubs to improve the survival rate of stocked fish.

The ministry licenses these operations and with other ministries, continuously test fish for growth rates and contaminants, trying to determine the ratio between natural and stocked fish in our waters. Based on the information received, these technicians determine the health of our biosystem. The Georgian Triangle Anglers based in Thornbury also depend on volunteer partners to get their stocking done. Club President Rick Baldry: “our club stocked brook trout this spring in 2 locations, the Feversham pond at the Conservation area and in Horning’s Mills. We also plan to stock rainbow & brown trout this fall. As of this writing the hatchery fish continue to be healthy. We collected rainbow eggs in Thornbury in April. We also ran our 40th Spring Trout Derby in Georgian Bay with a weigh station in Wiarton.

It increased provincial funds for community hatcheries from the previous support of the Community Fish and Wildlife Involvement Program (CFWIP). This partnership is key to growing and maintaining the province’s sport fisheries through stocking, conservation, and management.”

Be thankful that we have so many dedicated people who work year round feeding, cleaning and stocking all aimed at giving you a better chance of landing that big one. Canada Rectifies Fishery Commission Funding Shortfall Signaling Commitment to Healthy Great Lakes Fishery With the tabling of its 2022 budget, the Government of Canada has rectified a longstanding funding shortfall for the Great Lakes Fishery Commission, the binational organization charged with protecting the Great Lakes fishery. Canada and the United States have a treaty in place over the Great Lakes fishery but, for many years, Canada was contributing much less than required under the treaty, relying on the United States to make up the shortfall. The new budget means that Canada is now in compliance with the agreement.

Pursuant to the Convention, both nations agreed to equally fund all Commission programs except for the sea lamprey control program, which is funded 69% by the United States and 31% by Canada, a reflection of the percentage of Great Lakes shoreline each

nation shares. However, for years, Canada had been under funding the Commission. Such underfunding undermined the GLFC’s important work, posing a threat to the world-class Great Lakes fishery. The 2022 budget marks the first time in many years that Canada has been in full compliance with the terms set forth in

the Convention. The two nations are now funding the Commission at the agreedto level with the goal of protecting and improving the $8 billion Great Lakes fishery. “I am now happy to have the ability to sit with my U.S. counterparts on this important commission as an equal partner,” said James McKane, the Commission’s vice chair. “With full funding from Canada now secured, we are eager to ratchet up our work to improve and protect this incredible resource.” The GLFC will once again host a booth at the 2022 Owen Sound Salmon Spectacular. New Invasive Species Regulations and What They Mean for You As concerns around the impacts of aquatic invasive species (AIS) continues to grow, anglers and boaters continue to play a key role in protecting the health of Ontario’s waterways through preventative efforts. Our recreational activities represent two of the most significant pathways of spread for AIS: boating and bait. This responsibility falls to us as boaters and anglers to prevent unwanted species from hitching a ride from one lake to the next. To reduce the spread of AIS throughout the province, on January 1, 2022, the Ontario government passed new legislation which regulates the boating and baitfish pathways. What are the New Boater Rules? Under the Invasive Species Act, 2015 watercrafts (i.e., boats, canoes, and kayaks) and watercraft equipment are now officially regulated as “carriers” with the following rules: Before transporting a boat or boat equipment overland [boaters must]: • Remove or open drain plugs to allow water

to drain from the boat or boat equipment; and • Take reasonable precautions to remove all aquatic plants (weeds), animals and algae from any boat, boat equipment, vehicle or trailer. • Before reaching a launch site or placing a watercraft in any body of water in Ontario, boaters are required to ensure their boat, boating equipment, vehicles or trailers are free of all: o Aquatic plants o Animals o Algae It is illegal to place a boat, boating equipment or any vehicle or trailer into any body of water if there are any aquatic plants, animals or algae attached to it. Going Above and Beyond While these laws represent a positive step towards maintaining the health of Ontario’s lakes and rivers, all boaters, and anglers, if time permits, go the extra mile since many

organisms, like microscopic zebra mussel veligers or Chinese mystery snails, can remain undetected and alive out of water for extremely long periods of time. We encourage you to: • Dry your watercraft and watercraft equipment for at least FIVE days in sunlight; and • Clean your watercraft and watercraft equipment from top to bottom using hot water over 50°C or with pressurized water between 2,500 and 3,000 psi. As conservationists, we as boaters and anglers have the power to drastically reduce the spread of AIS in Ontario’s waterways and beyond. The Sydenham Conservation Foundation Over the years we have written many articles regarding the Sydenham Conservation Foundation. This article was originally written by my dad the late Fred Geberdt. After reading his article and adding some new updates, I felt it was worth a reprint showing the importance of the Sydenham Conservation Foundation (SCF) to our local areas. My father had a real passion for Conservation and the preservation of sensitive wetlands. I am sure you will enjoy the article he wrote in the 2016 Sportsmen’s Outdoors Annual magazine. The Sydenham Conservation Foundation (SCF) is a non-profit, non-political, charitable organization which was incorporated in 1991 and registered with the Canada Revenue Agency for tax-deductible donation purposes. It was formed by a group of conservationists to address the problem of rapidly disappearing public access to environmentally sensitive lands, waters, and forests.

The eastern part of the property was previously used as cattle pasture and is presently being reforested and worked on for additional wildlife habitat enhancement.

The property is managed in partnership with the Sydenham Sportsmen’s Association, as a demonstration area for farmers and rural residents as to how they can provide wildlife friendly habitat on their properties. Wildflower plots, tree plantings, as well as shrub and brush piles have been placed throughout the retired hay field. THE LONG SWAMP WETLANDS COMPLEX There are six properties contained in this parcel of land consisting of 674.8 acres in total. Three of these are located at Concession 6, North Part Lot 14 (97.5 acres), Concession 6, Lot 15 (195 acres), Concession 7, Part Lot 13 (84.3 acres) and named THE KELLY MOTHERSELL WILDLIFE AREA. The remaining three are Concession

THE GERALD M. HILCHEY MEMORIAL CONSERVATION AREA This property of 89.6 acres is located at Concession 6, Part Lot 29 in the Township of Chatsworth. It is part of the Kinghurst Swamp, a provincially significant wetland and is designated as part of Kinghurst West, life science A.N.S.I. (Area of Natural and Scientific Interest). The wetland and retired agricultural fields support many resident and migratory species of wildlife. The retired agricultural fields have been registered as a Managed Forest Plan, and were planted with 10,000 conifers. In future years, hardwoods will be planted interspersed in the conifers to provide additional wildlife habitat. WALKER WETLANDS This 158 acre property is located at Concession 10, Part Lot 11 and Concession

Since its inception, the SCF has been able to purchase over 1,500 acres in the Township of Georgian Bluffs, and the Township of Chatsworth, in Grey County. These properties have important connections with the Pottawatomi River, the Sydenham River, the Sauble River, and the Saugeen River watersheds. The following is a brief overview of the SCF properties: THE W. DOUGLAS REID CONSERVATION AREA This property of 100 acres, is located at Concession 2, North ½ Lot 3 in the Township of Georgian Bluffs, County of Grey. This environmentally sensitive property has upwelling cold water streams, which feed

10, Part Lot 12, in the Township of Georgian Bluffs. Located on the headwaters of the Pottawatomi River, this wetland and retired farm pasture supports many resident and migratory species of wildlife. Work continues with tree plantings, placement of nesting boxes, location of brush piles and major fencing projects to protect the property from neighbouring livestock. It is located adjacent to a 78 acre parcel owned by the Grey Sauble Conservation Authority. SHALLOW LAKE WETLANDS This 505 acre property is located at Concession 6, Part Lots 5,6,7,8 and 9, and Concession 5, Part Lots 6 and 7, also Plan 857, Lot 37, in the geographic Village of Shallow Lake, Township of Georgian Bluffs. The SCF acquired this provincially significant wetland in October 2005. The area was previously mined for marl, used in the production of Portland cement from 1884 to 1913. This extraction of marl resulted in the formation of a man-made inland lake subject to summer draining due to sinkholes (karst landforms). The SCF continues to work at redevelopment of the area for waterfowl and fisheries habitat with input from the community, and is managed in consultation with a committee comprised of community members, other not-for-profit organizations and government agencies representatives. The SCF continues to work at solving the ongoing challenges of preventing off-road

vehicles from accessing the property at times when the water disappears from this inland lake.

THE ARCHER HOLDING PROPERTY This small property contains less than 1 acre, and is located at Concession 4 N Part Lot M in the Municipality of Chatsworth Township. It is bordered on the west and south sides by the upper Sydenham River. The river bank has been fenced to protect it from livestock and white cedar trees have been planted in the small field area to provide boundary lines for the property, some large hardwood trees have also been planted and a large sign has been placed which identifies the property.

As with most non-profit charitable organizations, raising funds necessary to carry on with their programs is a continuing challenge. The SCF is most grateful to the many who have donated generously over the years, many in memory of loved ones in support of the conservation, environmental and educational programs of the Sydenham Conservation Foundation.

In addition to purchasing properties for public access, the Sydenham Conservation Foundation have also supported many additional environmental projects and organizations. Several Grey & Bruce school libraries have been sponsored by purchasing for them subscriptions of magazines and literature on conservation and the environment. SCF funding has also been provided to assist educational programs and property needs which will increase school children’s awareness of their interaction with the environment and allow them to experience interactions with nature.

Fish On Fishing is best when you have a line in the water. No matter the day, the time of year, it’s solitude with or without a companion. Fishing is reaching into nature and pulling out life, now whether you decide to release it or have it for breakfast is your prerogative. Partaking in the Owen Sound Salmon Spectacular the past years has been an experience I will never forget, and one that I keep learning with. It doesn’t matter if I am on the water fishing, at the weigh station greeting anglers and weighing their fish, or tossing fish on their plates at the fish fry, the event brings the community together and provides education, entertainment, sustainability and conservation. Over the years I have had some nice fish on the leader board and I have had no fish on the leader board, but I get excited when I recognize someones name on the board and especially when it is a young child. How exciting it is that the younger generation is following in our footsteps and making us proud.

Some of the best outdoors adventure stories are told while trying to reel in that 13 lb trout, talking about the last one that jumped off the line and got away or slipped out of your hands back into the water, trust me, it’s happened to me. They are the events that make you go ‘HEY! I worked for that.’ and then you slam your head back with laughter as you drop that rigger back down in the water and try again.

The Spring Fishing and Boat show in Mississauga kicks off the start of the open water fishing season every year and GCFA has a booth there annually to recruit new members and spread the word about this exciting group for women. GCFA branded clothing and swag is available for purchase at the show or from our website. A trip to the fantastic Bear’s Den lodge on the French River delta has become a yearly tradition for the group. The women’s only fishing trip is a favourite among our members and spaces sell out quickly every year. Quality time spent fishing for bass, crappie, pike, and panfish with like minded women in the unspoiled paradise of the French River is definitely one of the highlights of the GCFA calendar. Throughout the year impromptu fishing excursions and events are planned and members are encouraged to meet up and fish together. Several amazing friendships have blossomed amongst GCFA members as a result of women joining up to fish together!

The Sweet Taste of Outdoors Life

When I was seven years old, I discovered the Little House on the Prairie series by Laura Ingalls Wilder. I spontaneously connected with the 19th century homesteading hero. She was like a long-lost friend. Every Laura Ingalls chapter cheered on my childhood fascination for pioneer life. Simple, honest stories that capture special moments when family and friends help grow gardens, store preserves, hunt deer, harvest fuel wood and make maple syrup.

Forty years later, I am still trying to live out Laura’s pioneer past. I admit that her chapter called the “sugar snow,” from the classic Little House in the Big Woods, stood out in a memory I revived as I built a little house in my own big woods. That little house is the Pye Acres Sugar Shack where we annually produce about 150 litres of Sweet Dog Maple Syrup. The double-entre brand name is promotion of nature’s candy and the sweet English Setters that join us every time we’re in the woods. When the warmth of the March break sun breaks the cold grip of winter, the snowy woods provide refreshing comfort. Family,

friends, and sweet dogs arrive, as silver pails on maples, and the sweetly scented smoke-filled air signal their attention. Like all homesteading skills, maple syrup production is a labour of love.

Syrup and salmon go quite well together so I know that my maple flavoured column in this year’s Salmon Spectacular Outdoors Annual magazine will suit many outdoor tastes. I appreciate the column space in this volunteer-produced publication as an opportunity to tap into (pardon the maple tree pun) the fundamentals of conservation and the celebration of outdoor pastimes.

Land stewardship is demanding work, but I don’t do it alone. I have an outstanding staff. In fact, you might say that the Sweet Dog Maple Syrup staff is like family to me. The “like family” expression reflects what Salmon Spectacular sponsors and attendees see when they meet the volunteers who run this outstanding event. Sydenham Sportsmen’s Association members and other local volunteers support each other, just like family, in the spirit giving back to their community and conservation. The comradery and civic pride do not go unnoticed by proud sponsors including the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters.

Aldo Leopold says, “A conservationist is one who is humbly aware that with each stroke of the axe, he is writing his signature on the face of the land.” I think about my signature as I yell “back cut” on a living tree. Last week I touched two maples of equal size that were obviously competing for the same space for growth. I felled the one less likely to make it through the next century. It is now fuel wood. My decision to harvest that maple allows

Small businesses benefit from Salmon Spectacular The Salmon Derby, what a spectacular event for a small community. Each year the derby has brought anglers from far and wide, each vying for the biggest fish in each category. The skill, camaraderie and just plain fun gives everyone a special feeling of being involved. This is no small event; it takes hundreds of volunteers to make this happen. A special thank you to Georgian Shores Marina and their staff for hosting this event each year, showing off our harbour and our hospitality. There are many small businesses that benefit from the salmon derby from Airbnb to Restaurants and anyone in the marine industry. After the last few years of COVID-19 the impact on all small businesses has been hard, so having an event like the derby attracting people to our community has always been a blessing. Not only for the purchasing influx in and around our community but also advertising in the Derby magazine is a great place for local business new and old to let people know where they are and what they offer, from Construction companies to the Hospitality industry. The Hand Eater A Northwest Ontario Muskie Hunt The gear was loaded into the trucks, double, wait triple, no, quadruple checked. The boats were on the hitch with covers on and prepared for the twenty-one hour trip ahead. As I lay in bed staring at a Cedar Lake Ontario map that I had prepped months in advance, the nervous anticipation that anglers get before a long trip or tournament was coursing through my veins. That very feeling that brings me back twenty-five years ago to a child laying sleepless in bed waiting to hit the road with Dad to the French River for a week’s Bass fishing.

to hit the road at 7:00 am to travel to Sault Ste Marie for night one of our nine day trip to Northwest Ontario. This stretch of road was familiar from my treks with my dad to the Sue rapids for Steelhead or back country Pike fishing. We arrived on time and settled into the hotel for a bite at Kelsey’s, and a beer or two before heading to bed as 4:30 a.m. would come fast.

Little did I know that no amount of preparation was going to ready me for “the incident,” running into what I will forever know as “the hand eater.” A Muskie that both humbled me, and gave me a newfound respect for the sheer force that these fish can exert.

The alarm clock went off in quick order and the group embarked on the final leg of the trip from Sault Ste Marie to Dryden. From here, we continued down Highway 105 to the access point where we would shuttle our gear across to the island we would call home for nine days. We hit the road and by dawn we were driving down along Lake Superior’s North Shore in true Canadian fashion with Tragically Hip’s greatest hits on repeat to

provide the soundtrack for our adventure. Not only were we rewarded with the views of the North Shore, but we also were fortunate to see two timber wolves, a rare site that made us feel that we were truly in the North.

Day 1: Preparation

We arrived on Friday August 27th with no plans to fish. This would be set-up and organization day and one of the important parts of the trip. Muskie fishing is a battle of attrition, hours of casting for minutes of absolute pandemonium. The boat must be organized and prepared for when the moment comes. Releasing tools are the most important part of Muskie fishing. Muskie, despite their fierce reputation, are incredibly fragile giants when outside of their natural environment.

Always make sure you have long nose pliers, jaw spreaders and bolt cutters to aid in the unhooking process. A large Muskie net is important to allow you to keep the fish in the water during the unhooking process until you are ready to measure and take pictures of your fish. As we always say, no release, no glory! Day 2: Cabbage Dragon The first night in camp went slowly with little sleep, full of anticipation to get out on the water. The plan would be to hit a milk run of previously scouted spots on depth maps. Being that it was early September with cool nights, the expectation was that the muskie would be using shallow structures such as rock shoals or thick cabbage beds. It did not take long for our assumptions to be confirmed. As we moved into our second bay of the day, we noticed seagulls diving into the water eating bait fish in the shallow weeds. We immediately turned the trolling motor and headed over. My Dad was the first man in as I was operating the motor. A couple turns of the reel, an impressive boil, and the words “I AM ON” came ringing out. A frantic battle ensued, but we were able to tame the beast as I slid the net under a beautiful, thick forty-four and a half inch Muskie. What a start to the trip for my dad! The rest of the day involved steady action ranging from Muskie follows to aggressive Northern Pike, eager to engage with our Muskie lures. No additional Muskie were caught, but most importantly, the skunk was out of the boat.

with the pattern which was established earlier with the bulk of the fish relating to the weeds. The day consisted of small to medium sized Pike in the thirty-inch range. We checked rock spots, but to no avail as we did not see any Muskie. We recharged back at the cabin and contemplated the days decisions, feeling refreshed we headed back out on full bellies around 5:30 p.m. The evening included working bays around the cabin which produced two good strikes by Muskies, but the hooks did not sink in, and the frustration continued. Feeling the urge to change things up, I put on a top water lure called a whopper plopper from Lake X Lures, which creates vibration through a propeller blade at the back of the bait. The evening drew on and we came upon the final spot of the night as the sun was setting- prime time. We explored a bay which had a feeder creek entering from a neighbouring lake. The bay held thick cabbage and the sensors where high knowing there was a good chance a Muskie would be present. As I retrieved my whopper plopper, weaving in and out of the weeds, I brought it alongside the boat and to my surprise, the entire bay exploded! I felt my rod double over and I yelled to my dad “GET THE NET!” This was the fish I was searching for and why we made the long trek to Cedar Lake. As the water settled, a forty-eight-inch giant Muskie came into view. Viscous head shakes had the lure almost loose with one single barb keeping the Muskie pinned. My Dad slipped the net under the giant, as a sigh of relief was heard across the lake. I could now relax and enjoy my trip. A quick, but careful, release, and the Muskie was returned to the lake for another angler to enjoy.

Day 4 to 6: Tough Bite Day 4 came and along with it a highpressure system which lasted into day six and caused the bite to slow down. Even with the tough conditions, we managed to land two more Muskies: a young Muskie in the thirty-inch class, and a thick forty-two incher which was enough to hold us over until the next weather system moved in. We also landed multiple Northern Pike including a behemoth thirty-six incher which ate a Muskie-sized bucktail and put up one heck of a fight.

On the second spot I hooked into a heathly mid thirty inch Northern Pike which was an indication that there should be other fish in the area. We continued down the shoreline and my Dad yelled I am on! An aggressive forty-one inch Muskie hit my Dad’s bucktail in the figure 8, after a few drag peeling runs I was able to slide the net under the brute. A look of relief came over my Dad, one I hadn’t seen in some time. My dad was on fire the entire trip but had struggled getting the Muskies into the net, including a heart breaking loss on a fish in the magical fifty inch class.

Day 7 “The Incident” After a hearty meal we were refueled and ready to attack the water to hunt for the third fish of the day which would set up as the best day of the trip. On night 6 we had a few beverages with a fellow Muskies Canada member who had tipped us off to a hot spot that they found during their stay. We decided this would be the spot that we would target first during our evening fish.

Day 7: Double Down We awoke on Day 7 battered and bruised from a weeks worth of casting. To our chagrin, mother nature had other plans bringing a dreary, windy and rainy day- the Muskie hunters dream! If you want to get serious with Muskie fishing you will need gortex rain gear and a love for nasty weather. For whatever reason those dreary overcast days seem to turn the bite on. We started on our usual milk run of weedy bay locations which we had been moving fish throughout the week but they did not produce. A change was needed, with the wind howling we switched tactics and focused on wind blow structure. The theory was that the wind would push or congregate the bait against shoals and rock structure bringing in the Muskie.

We decided to hit one last spot before we would head in for a break. As we worked along a wind blown island we knew there should be a Muskie sitting in the saddle between the island and the mainland. After working through the area my Dad sat down for a break, and at that very moment I had serious boil on my bucktail. My rod loaded up and the fight was on with a quality forty-six inch Muskie. She dogged me in the deep water but I managed to get her boatside. Just as my dad went to dip the net she decided to turn her head making contact with the rim of the net causing her to go crazy! Some prophanities were uttered but luckily the fish wrapped herself in the line which allowed me to slide it back into the net. Content with a two fish start we headed back to the cabin for some afternoon grub.

We made the long run across the lake, beginning on the spot we immediately notice lush cabbage and coontail beds. We were quickly rewarded with a hot follow from a respectable forty inch class Muskie but she missed my bait and went after my Dads bait being too aggressive for her own good, missing both. Knowing there was likely more fish on the spot, we continued, as I brought my bait into the figure 8 I had a massive explosion next to the boat. My dad mustered speed from his twenties and scooped the beastly Muskie before the fight even began. What a rush, we knew the bite was on with this being the third Muskie of the day.

As I looked into the net I noticed that the hooks had been deeply inhailed. I yelled to my dad to grab the tools and prepped for musky surgery. I put my kevlar glove on and hoisted the brutes head out of the net, to my surprise all hooks were so enbedded and I could not get the pliers into position. Jaw spreaders were needed, as I inserted the tool, spreading her mouth wide, the Muskie decided the fight was far from over! With one viscous head shake she slipped from my grip, and a blink of the eye clamped her jaws down on my exposed hand. I immediately dropped the fish back into the net, knowing the situation had just turned serious. I looked down and could see the inside of my hand through a gaping wound that had been caused by the Muskie’s teeth. The look on my dad’s face is one I’ve seldom seen, one I hope not to see again. With his help I took my sweater off and used it as a wrap to slow the bleeding. Unfortunately, we still had an angry Muskie to deal with, together we cut the hooks free using a combination of jaw spreaders and bolt cutters. I told my dad to grab a bucket of water to wash my blood off the deck, it took two, but I needed to get a photo with what I figured was my trip ending fish. After a few grumbled remarks about how his son is crazy, my dad washed the deck down and I had my photo op. We released the fish back to the depths and with our adrenalin running high we took off to the cabin for first aid. An hour drive to Dryden Emergency, 9 stitches, antibiotics, a stern warning about the nature of my injury from the surgeon, and I was discharged, left to contemplate fishing the next day.

Day 8 & 9 “Lessons Learned” Day 8 morning came and were scheduled to head back to the hospital in Dryden for a second look by another doctor to ensure no infection had set in. I received another stern warning about the seriousness of my injury and how lucky I was that no tendons or nerves were significantly damaged. Only one large vein in my hand which was ripped laterally for three inches which caused the significant amount of blood loss.

a ten inch jointed Believer. What a rebound, landing my first Muskie over fifty inches! I will be returning to Cedar Lake this year with my dad to chase the hand eater and hopefully have my revenge! Accepting my fate, my Dad and I only went out to troll for Muskie on day 8 & 9, no casting for the rest of the trip. I am not sure that’s what the doctors had in mind by “absolutely NO fishing” but I needed to get back on the figurative horse. The ordeal gave me a healthy respect for the ferocity and strength of Muskie once again, as it appeared that a lifetime of unhooking Bass, Northern Pike, Walleye and Muskie, perhaps left me a little complacent and more risk taking than one need be. When I got home my dad and I hit Lake St Clair for another Muskie hunt and the first fish I caught after recovering from my injury was a fifty-one inch monster trolled up on

Memories of A Booming Georgian Bay Fishery ....through the eyes of an Angler

As a child, I would stand on the sidewalk of 8th street bridge at night, staring up the Sydenham river towards the old YMCA hole. Coleman Lanterns lined both the east and west side of the river as well as the north side all the way down to the newly renovated Giche-name-wiikwedong Bridge on 10th Street, leading to the inner harbour. The ‘Syd’ was my babysitter and I saw this sight often. The dark shadows of fishermen reflected on the high river banks as one or more gathered around each beacon, talking, laughing and enjoying the starlit quiet of the evening. All through the river system, splashing and belly flopping could be heard, sometimes so loud and surprising it would make even the most fearless angler jump. The trees had turned to yellow and red along the river as fall approached and fresh runs of Chinook salmon, some up to 40 pounds plus, had finally made their way into the river, returning from their instinctive travels in the deeper waters of Georgian Bay and beyond. They cruised up and down the river preparing to finish their life’s journey.

Without warning, and always by surprise, the river would light up with frantic splashing, as if someone had fallen in. The squeal of the reel tension was heard as other anglers quickly reeled their lines in to the sound of a voice yelling

Continued from Page 122 hundreds if not thousands of multi species fish would take residence and feed on baitfish. In a myriad of boats, families and anglers alike would anchor off the buoys reaching out into Georgian Bay to jig for Trout, Brown, Whitefish, and silver Salmon. As well, people from all corners of the province camped on the walls, rod in hand, patiently waiting for that magic strike. In the deeper waters of our spectacular pond, boats cruised for the giant chrome Chinook salmon occupying traditional hot spots such as the world famous Thompson’s Hole, the red doors, the green can, and off the Indian River just to name a few. These were the early days. Our resident charters like Starchief, Fishing Fever, Copper

Dodger, Silver Hook, Beach Bum, Killer “B” and Guarantee Houseboat Charters would cruise these spots, with Lymans and spoons dragging and rods buckled in their holders. They could be found on the VHF marine radio at the ”side of 68”, keeping people informed by helping new anglers with fishing tips and looking for salmon and trout. We had no technology in those days. We made do without fancy digital sonar equipment with screens the size of a television. If you didn’t own a Sitex or Eagle 9500, and Lowrance X16 paper graphs, you simply used your hand crank downrigger, dropped it to the bottom and raised it up 15 or 20 feet until you rubbed bottom, then checked for weeds and reset. We trolled with 14 foot flat bottom boats with 9.9 hp motors,

The dream of being that person on the stage accepting the keys to a new boat, motor and trailer is fresh in all fishermen and women’s minds. Every morning, every night, grinding through the boats and the slow times. You see the lead change often and you pray that it will eventually be you. On a Friday evening during the 26th Salmon Spectacular, I was fishing in 135 feet of water, directly off the Indian River, a favourite staging area for Chinook. There was no sunset to captivate you this particular evening and get you eager for the dusk bite. That night there was only torrential rain. I remember sitting in the downpour, watching the fishing rods while my fishing partner drove. Rain was dribbling down the crack of my butt and soaking me inside and out. I thought back of all the years in this derby, how I hadn’t missed a morning or evening of the derby for 26 years, unless of extreme weather. I was drenched and tired

Halfway feeling sorry for myself, I looked at my rod and it thumped as if something ran into it. Suddenly, the rod tip went straight into the water and didn’t come up! I grabbed the rod and set the hook and this fish was running like a drag racing car. I have been asked many times what that

feels like and my best description is like dangling a lure on an overpass on the 401 and catching a bumper! This fish felt different. It fought for a solid 20 minutes, sounding several times to the deep below us. When all was said and done and as many times before, when it finally got into the boat and onto the floor, we looked at each other and we were heading to the weigh-in, NOW! All the way I was thinking, is this the one? You never really know initially but the scales would not lie. On it flopped! A beautiful,

healthy female salmon. There was a crowd gathering and I was shaking like a fat kid that had a chocolate bar taken away from him! A second later the weigh judge said loudly for all to hear: “26.24 pounds!” I was in the lead for the first time in my life, after all the derbies I had fished before. Everything went blank. It took time to sink in. When it was finally over two days later, the fish held on and I got the call from my wife Sharon. I was at Jeffrey Robins home surrounded by my life-long friends like himself and my oldest fishing friend Bill Fairman. What a day to follow! I will never forget. I highly recommend winning to everyone. It is a cherished memory, and I regularly thank my Father Ed Busey for introducing me to this pastime I love. When we discovered ice fishing for spring salmon it instantly became a technique that really allowed these silver freight trains to show us their ultimate power and speed with the use of smaller tackle. This is my absolute favourite way to fish vertically. Ask anyone. Spoons and plastic with a 4 ft rod in 135 feet of water will really hook an angler for life. Most fishers have seen the rare times Georgian Bay freezes and the hundreds of anglers are chasing these fresh, cold, blood red fillets for our table.

Most of all, we do it for the rush. It can get into your blood, but in recent years the bay doesn’t always freeze over. However, when it does freeze, the fishing provides a delicacy for anyone who pulls a rod. Moreover the table fare is like nothing that can be bought in a store. A unique gift from a unique body of water. There is more to the derby than winning, as thousands of fishers will tell you. The vivid memories created by this derby and this salmon fishery in general have lasted a lifetime for us all. It allows us to remove ourselves briefly from the stress of our lives in these nerve-racking times and rekindle our love for reeling one in. Fishing sets the stage for traditions, love and camaraderie with old friends, like my dearest friends Lisa and “Squeeky” Tadgell. It’s true meaning is gathering together while enjoying and sharing our catch with all, and creating memories of a time of simplicity and celebration. Most important, fishing allows us to express our sense of excitement, exposing our inner child. It gives our souls a recharge. It is the friendships, and our memories, combined with our young anglers that carry our traditions and innovate our sport. Mentioning us old boys on occasion, in passing, ensures our immortality, for we all will take our place in the history of our generation and the angling we were blessed to experience.

If you know me at all, besides being a pain in the butt, chances are we have run into each other for a fishing chat, a fresh fillet to share, or just to remember and to keep alive the memories of anglers and their skillful fishing from back in the day. Moreover, we reminisce while sharing the stories of the days when this fishery was better than any generation had the opportunity to experience in Georgian Bay. As I get older, my fishing mentors and the familiar faces on the river or wall slowly disappear. Our younger anglers do as we do and keep our fellow anglers alive through stories. My desire is still there but the mind is truly younger than the body but we all manage to run for tight lines. Still, when my time has come to an end, I plan for the fishing gods to receive my ashes. So that my home will always be within those blue waters of our glorious bay. I will leave this life with a smile, treasuring the memories of those countless hours spent on the waters of our Great Lakes. I am also always very appreciative of having a wife that tolerated my disappearing for weeks on end for all these years when the fish stormed into our backyard, the beautiful Georgian Bay.

Through the Eyes of a Fisherwife Okay let’s get one thing straight right from the beginning. I love that my husband loves to fish! I also love that it is something we can do together. We bought a 34 foot Cruiser after several years of camping. It was supposed to be our floating cottage. Little did I know it was going to be our fishing boat.

Next we must check the lines for bumps, rough spots and weaknesses. How can that be no good as he removes 700 miles of line when it didn’t even catch a fish? He also tells me the lures that are garbage and what lures don’t work, what colour works best and what colour shouldn’t be used anymore. I am sure you get my drift! I really don’t care, but being the dutiful fisherwife I am, I smile and nod my head and try to not look at the messages that are

riggers survived 3 months of laying on the top shelf with, OMG, my favourite blankets that have been missing!! I just sigh as I try to think there are so many things he could be doing and this is a husband and wife outing. The next few months slip by and it’s time to get the boat ready by loading it and making sure we are all good to go. We also have to check the weather every day. It is funny how we never agree on the weather. Heaven forbid I might say it’s going to rain when he says it isn’t. My back is killing me from loading the boat, but it is okay, I am the fisherwife. I will continue to do all that needs doing to keep my man happy. The Salmon Spectacular is advertising to get your tickets and I truly believe he is one of the first to purchase his ticket. I will admit it is an absolutely awesome time, well organized, lots of fun and lots of stories. This “true” story is my experiences as the fisherwife, so here I go. (I love you John). Now, I am sure you have all heard the expression, “watch the rods.” From the minute we step foot on our boat on day one of the Derby at some ungodly hour, I am instructed to watch the rods. He has had his coffee and used the facilities. I drag myself out of my bunk and try to look somewhat presentable. I make a coffee and listen to him telling me what a perfect morning it is, with the bay looking “slick ass calm,” pronounced (cam) no not a spelling mistake, it is the east coast in him. I was instructed that this was the most important job on a boat. Hmmmmmm, well I watched the rods one day and I watched a spider build a complete spider web. I was so happy that he asked me to watch the rods, or I would never have seen this miracle of

nature. I would turn my head just slightly and hear him yelling, “You aren’t watching the rods!” Good Lord, if he is watching me and can see I am not watching the damn rods, why doesn’t he just watch the rods himself?

Okay so the rods moved. Before I can say “fish on” he has jumped down from his perch, nearly knocking me over, he grabs the rod and screams at me to drive the boat. Really!! I am going to jump up and steer this 34 foot boat, which way, how fast, to the left, more, more, more. Holy crap, how much to the left? Now he is screaming “get the net, get the net!” How am I to get the net when I am driving the boat? “Just let it go where it wants,” he barks out, “get down here, I’m gonna lose the fish!” “I can’t take this stress!” I yell out. “Just come help me, it’s our dinner.” I jumped down off his perch and grab the net. I lean over the edge, lose my glasses, lose my hat, listen to him telling me where to put the net and the fish decides to go to the other side. I try to get past him but he won’t move cause he is holding the rod. I bend down again to get this fish and OMG, it gets away.

We resume our places and I am determined that I will not take my eyes off the rods. I can’t do it, I have never been successful making one eye go right and one eye go left at the same time. The whole time having the sun beat down on me and inhaling exhaust fumes because the breeze we had going north is no longer blowing and we are going south. I start to thank all the sun gods for coming out full and bright so we can go to shore. After me standing on the back of the boat to jump off and tie the lines, he asks me,

“What’s for lunch?” I just smile and think to myself it is only 10 days, you can do this. This was only day 1. Day 2 gets much better. Once again I hear the rumble of motors starting and people yelling, so much excitement. “We’re goanna catch one today baby I just feel it!” “Okay” I say, as I stagger out. He has decided that if we blast ACDC the fish will dance for us. Well, he was right this day. After the usual me watching the rod, him watching me and the rods and me trying not to be caught reading my messages, we had a fish on. I assumed my new position on his perch, while he reeled in the fish. I carefully jumped down and got the net and we had the fish. It sure was some excitement! I am, of course, asked to take pictures of him and his fish, and like the dutiful fisherwife, I take it at different angles. Hmmmm, I think if he holds it out from his body it looks massive. He has decided today to teach me how to bring up the riggers and I am thinking he is so considerate, teaching me how to do all this “very physical work.” We head for the dock and once again, I assume my position on the swim platform so I can jump on the dock and secure the lines. I am instructed again how to plug in the boat and then to help take the cooler off the boat. Really! Oh yea, you need to talk about your catch. He asks me if I wanted to go weigh it in and I am feeling so happy that he wants me to be so involved. As I lug the cooler up the dock, he stops to tell all his buddies he has a good one. We get to the line to weigh-in our beauty salmon and he asks me if I mind

standing in line. His back is really hurting. As always, I aim to please. I am in the lineup, waiting and waiting for him to return, and I look to my right and HE is sitting down at the picnic table, eating a Fisherman’s Breakfast! You have got to be kidding, I said to myself. Is this what I signed up for?? Just as I am ready to haul up the monster I am weighing in, up my husband comes, gives them his ticket number and HIS name gets entered. Not one for the leader board, but donating it gives you a new lure. Oh great, another one to add to the collection, but a nice gesture just the same.

happy. I wouldn’t trade it for anything…. oh wait, I made an executive decision. I bought a nice 18 foot fishing boat that can be manned by one person. It’s now proudly sitting beside the big boat and I lay in my bed, listening to him get ready to go out.

We then usually head back to the boat so he can get some much needed sleep while I clean up and start thinking on what to prepare for dinner that must be completed by 5:00 pm. At around 4:20 pm I wake up his majesty to let him know that supper is ready. He wolfs it down and before I can clean up the dishes, the boat engines are roared to life and I am apparently going to assume my position of releasing the lines, unplugging the boat, jumping on board and watching the rods he has so precisely set up. This is about it, 10 days in and 10 days out.

He always can find someone to watch the rods and I lovingly have meals waiting for him to return home to. I wish I had thought of this sooner, as it sure makes it more enjoyable for me. Don’t get me wrong, I love fishing, but I guess I love it when I want to fish, not when it feels like a job. Tight lines everyone and watch out for Snuffelufagus catching the big one!

It is a 10 day event in the big tent and they do include everything from fashion shows to demonstrations to kid’s fun day and live entertainment. It is so nice to slip away while the “main man” has his beauty sleep and is out fishing. Now with the smaller boat, I am free to roam with my other lady friends.

Dufferin-North Peel Anglers’ and Hunters’ The Club was founded in 1930 by a group of men who were interested in fishing, hunting and conservation.

The land we have now was purchased between 1949/1950 or there about. We are a conservation club. What we have and what we do at this club: • 1930-Initial location of the Club was sixth line of Mono Township and highway 9 and was purchased for $1000.00. A bank loan of $1000.00 was arranged and to be re-paid from 40 life memberships at $25.00 each • 1952 property was sold and the club moved to the property on Veteran’s Way and highway 9 which included a clubhouse and 48 acres • 1955 – the club purchased the existing property of 126 acres for $5000.00 • Currently we own 126 acres of land including forest and ponds • The Headwaters of the Credit River is located on the current property

Catching a Winner! I was hoping to get out fishing with Dad but I wasn’t able to last year when he caught his big fish. I had prayed hard that Dad would beat his cancer and start feeling better. He hadn’t been feeling the greatest but decided he wanted to fish at least one day during the derby.

This is the story as told to me by Dad (Dennis Urbshott) and Gerry Neerhof. Gerry was fishing the Salmon Spectacular with his fishing partner; Sherman Penney and they made a spot in the “Codfather” for Dad to join them. The morning winds had made the water pretty bumpy so they headed out in the evening in search of the big one. They left the dock around 5pm and started a pass in the middle of the bay in deeper water. The sun was still shining and it was

warm enough to wear a short-sleeved shirt. After a while of uneventful trolling, a rod fired. It was Gerry’s rod bent over with the reel screaming. Gerry quickly grabbed the rod and hooked into the fish. He passed the pole to Dad and stepped back so Dad had the entire back of the boat.

Captain Sherman skillfully maneuvered the boat to protect the fish and keep away from boat traffic. After another good run, and more reeling the fish was near the boat.

Dad held onto the rod the best he could. 2 years of cancer treatments took a toll on his body leaving him weak and the muscles in his arms were all atrophied. He trembled as he reeled, he wound up slipping the butt end of the rod into his belt to help him steady it. It was a good fight. After the fish took a few reel screaming runs, they all thought it could be a big fish. Dad continued to reel. He was very tired and worked every last fiber of muscle he had. His hands cramped and he felt exhausted yet he persevered.

Dad grimaced as he fought to keep the fish beside the boat. Gerry grabbed the net and expertly scooped the played-out fish into the boat.

He could barely lift it. He figured the scale was wrong because the fight felt like a 50lb. fish!

He told us the story, still trembling before explaining he was completely worn out and was going to bed.

They took a few snapshots, pulled the rods and headed back to the boat slip.

Dad wound up with a second-place fish of the day at 19.34lbs. He received a great prize package that included a kayak. He says he won me a boat!!! I suppose he did! I can hardly wait to try it out!!!

There were a lot of excited woohoo’s and a bit of profanity once the fish hit the deck. It was a big silver salmon. Gorgeous female. The large fish lay in the net as Dad shakily took a seat at the back of the boat. His arms shook so violently he had difficulty raising a bottle of water to his lips. He breathlessly announced “That was all I could do!”

It was 9:35 pm when they entered the tent to weigh in the big female salmon. Dad excitedly put his fish through the weigh scales and kept it for Gerry to fry. Gerry and Sherman said their goodbyes to Dad and he headed home. I was waiting for him. My sons were visiting

Causes of Migration Failure in Chinook Salmon In September of 2021 four students from Carleton University, Ottawa, did a study at the Owen Sound Mill Dam to look into the causes of migration failure in Chinook Salmon. This study, during the fall spawning run, coincided with our clubs (S.S.A.) yearly collection of 110,000 salmon eggs to be raised in our Hatchery. I have to say that I was impressed with their diligence. They were there every day, rain or shine, managed to make an impressive surgical workspace in small quarters and worked until dark. The following is a report on their hard work that resulted in some interesting facts for the future with ecological and fish conservation issues in a warmer future. Reproduction constitutes a crucial lifehistory event for salmonid fish. In some species, reproduction fitness is dependent on a once-in-a-lifetime migration to their spawning grounds. En-route mortality is common during normal conditions,

but recent climatic warning exacerbates mortality, raising conservation concerns as salmonids hold great ecological, social and economic value. This project will explore whether the increased mortality and failure to spawn is related to limitations in the physiological capacity of salmonids, and their capacity to cope with the challenging physical and environmental conditions faced during their migration. The migratory capacity of salmonids is determined by their metabolic capacity, which in turn depends on the hearts capacity to supply the body with oxygenated blood (i.e. cardiorespiratory capacity). The heart relies on its own oxygen supply, which is partly delivered by the coronary circulation, which improves cardiac function and swimming performance in fish. In salmonids,

however, the perfusion of the heart via the coronary is likely impaired by the fact that most salmonids suffer from arteriosclerotic lesions in the main coronary artery (coronary arteriosclerotic, similar to myocardial infarction in humans, albeit non-lethal), which narrows the lumen of the coronary artery and thus impedes coronary blood flow. This condition is exacerbated during exposure to stress, e.g., during the spawning migration, yet, it is to date unknown whether this condition may to be linked to a failure of salmonids to reach their spawning ground during the migration. By using state-of-the-art physiological bio-

This student, Andreas Ekstrom (Ph.D), was from Sweden and studying at Ottawa. Interestingly enough a female student from California even flew over to take part in the study for a couple of weeks. Here Andreas is tying a thread around the coronary artery of this anesthetized salmon that will also be tagged for electronic tracking and then released above the dam on it’s route to a spawning bed.

telemetrical animal tracking techniques, and by blocking the blood flow via the coronary artery, we will explore the relationship between cardiorespiratory and migratory capacity, and the importance of the coronary circulation for these traits, in Chinook Salmon (Oncorhynchustshawytscha) during their spawning migration. Fish are captured at the Mill Dam fishway and are subjected to a surgical procedure during which the coronary artery will either be blocked by tying a thread around it (coronary ligation) or left intact (sham control). A PIT tag is then inserted into the abdominal cavity, to allow for tracking the fish using receivers in the river, and a spaghetti tag is placed around the dorsal ridge to allow for visual detection. The fish is then immediately released upon full recovery. Tracking receivers are placed at strategic positions along the migratory route which allows for a detailed assessment of the migratory progress and migratory duration (swim speed, time taken to travel between receivers) of individual fish. The effects of an obstructed coronary blood supply to the heart on individual lifetime fitness, will be assessed by evaluating whether the fish arrived at their respective spawning grounds, and how long it took them to get there. As laboratory-based findings demonstrate that the coronaries play a crucial role in determining the upper thermal tolerance limits in salmonids, the thermal conditions of the migratory route chosen by the fish will be characterized. This will provide important clues into whether the thermal conditions of the river (continuously recorded at different locations using deployed temperature loggers) influences the probability of survival an migratory capacity of the fish. This novel experimental approach will aid to reveal the physiological basis underlying the susceptibility of salmonids to warming river conditions during migration. The acquired data can also be used to deal with ecological and fish issues in a warner future.

Sydenham Sportsmen’s Association Celebrates 75 Years of Conservation

1947 – 2022 The year 2022 marks the 75th year since 1947, when the Sydenham Sportsmen’s Association (SSA) adopted its new and present name from the former Grey & Bruce Counties Fish and Game Protective Association. But kept the original motto – “Conservation is Our Aim” If someone had told me back then, that I would remember the events of that evening or much of what has since occurred over the years with the SSA, I doubt I would have believed them. But here we are, 75 years later and I still remember most of the details of what was to become for me a life-time journey and a most exciting evening for a seven-year old boy living in that era to be a part of. In 1947, the St. Thomas’ Anglican Church manse, the residence of our minister Reverend Roberts was two doors south of the Owen Sound home I grew up in. I remember standing with my father at the end of our driveway and Dad being approached by Reverend Roberts. I recall, he showed my father a paper of some sort. I don’t remember if it was a letter, a handbill or news clipping, but my Dad was reading it while Reverend Roberts talked to him. Dad handed the paper back to Reverend Roberts and looked down at me and asked, “What do you think Jack . . . do you want to join a sportsmen’s club?” Of course my answer was yes! The meeting was held in the Branch 6, Royal Canadian Legion headquarters located on 1st Avenue West, beside the Owen Sound Public Library. The building had been the former home to the Sydenham Club and the property is now the site of the Tom Thompson Art Gallery. Entering the front door of the building, I recall a large display of swords, bayonets and firearms. To the left, there was a gentleman in a room where I believe there was a fireplace and a large pool table. We proceeded down a hallway towards the rear and the meeting assembling in a large room. The meeting itself was of course beyond my grasp, but it was later explained to me. Because it was the annual meeting of the Grey and Bruce Counties Fish and Game Protective Association, everyone was required to become a paid up member in good standing of that Association in order to

is we kids had a lot of fun. We caught many panfish and ate lots of hot dogs.

Reverend Roberts was chairman for the meeting and John Allen who had served as the association’s 1946 secretary, provided the past year’s report. Being the 25th anniversary of the association, Wm. “Bill” Inglis gave a talk on the history of the organization. Reports were given by delegates to the annual convention of the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (OFAH) held on February 4-5 in Niagara Falls. At that period of time, Grey and Bruce Counties Fish and Game Protective Association members who were OFAH members belonged to OFAH Huron & Erie Zone 6.

The election of officers was held and John Allen was elected president for 1947, succeeding 1946 president Harold York. Other officers elected were: vice-president Bill Inglis, treasurer Charles Buzza, secretary Frank Dearden, executive members: Herb Welland, George Haston, Ed Mills, Ken Ellis, Bill Irving, Verdie Wendorf, Sam Leaver. Little did any in attendance that evening realize how important and long-lasting the effect that the next order of business would have, when the question of changing the name of the Grey and Bruce Counties Fish and Game Protective Association was put to the floor. The reason for the request to change the name, being that there were now many such conservation groups in Grey and Bruce counties. After much discussion it was decided and voted on to change the name to the Sydenham Sportsmen’s Association and through my father, both he and I became proud SSA members that evening. I don’t recall other young people that may have been in attendance that evening, but no doubt there likely were others, as it was not very long afterwards that the Sydenham Sportsmen’s Association developed a very active Junior Membership. In those days, many general membership meetings featured outdoor movies as entertainment and often the junior members in attendance outnumbered the adult members. Adult supervised fishing trips to Bass Lake and Lake Charles, were the earliest SSA junior activities that I recall. These trips were well attended and included a wide range of ages that must have been challenging for the adult members to manage. All I remember

organization and with the assistance of SSA member Ed Taylor, the pair developed an archery introduction program that included the SSA junior members. The Bowmen’s archery butts were located alongside the Sydenham River, at both ends of a long stretch of lawn at the entrance to Harrison Park. There was also a short trail target range located between the road into the Park and the Cemetery Hill. Quite a few of us SSA junior members took advantage of the program – some becoming quite proficient. In cooperation with the Department of Agriculture, the SSA initiated the first Junior Forestry Club in the province. Several OSCVI teachers were involved, acting as instructors. The SSA also had formed a Radio Club that was a radio forum in cooperation with the Owen Sound Junior Chamber of Commerce.

The SSA/Dominion Marksman junior .22 cal rifle program – under the guidance of well trained SSA adult members – was likely the most popular of the early SSA junior activities. At one time, over one hundred SSA junior members took part in a target shooting program – while learning safety and proper handling of a firearm. Sid Pearce, John Holmes, Harry Staples, Creighton Bradford and Ed Taylor were amongst other SSA adult members who supervised the program. The target shooting program was held in the rifle range at the Owen Sound Collegiate and Vocational Institute (OSCVI) in an area referred to as the tunnel, located below ground adjacent to the basement level. (In those days, some high schools had rifle practice ranges as part of the federal government’s cadet program.) Important and exciting for many SSA members – and junior members who were lucky as I was to have a father who included me in his fishing outings – was in 1948, when the SSA began negotiations to create a SSA/Landowner Relationship agreement with a number of landowners

In reality, this early agreement was a SSA benchmark event in the 75 year history of the Sydenham Sportsmen’s Association. Not only did this agreement create an opportunity for public fishing, but it also opened the door for future SSA/Landowner cooperation which both allowed and spurred decades of stream improvement and rehabilitation as well as many other conservation projects to occur. The Sydenham Sportsmen’s Association and many of its members have been well recognized by organizations and levels of government for their conservation efforts and leadership on numerous occasions over the past 75 years. The Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters has presented the yearly Mary Pickford Provincial Conservation Award to the Sydenham Sportsmen’s Association sixteen times. There is much

Beside pride in being a SSA member – what do I, Jack Osadzuk personally take from my time in the Sydenham Sportsmen’s Association? Gratitude is first and foremost in my mind.
