Welcome

Well, here we are again! Another year has sped by and we are sitting, getting our thoughts together for another sale catalogue. Calving is over half done and what a calving season it’s been! From balmy temps, not having to put new calves in, to calves freezing their ears before they hit the ground at the -50 temps, back to spring like weather, what a mixed bag of seasons!

2023 was a rough one on the moisture front, but we hope you all made it out the other side. We’re praying for lots of snow & rain this spring to fill up all the dugouts and sloughs and give our poor parched ground a good drink to hopefully grow some cow chow this year. We are blessed to be eternal optimists!

We have so many people that help us throughout the year; our families & so many friends; from help with cattle shows, to preg checking time, to dropping off meals & taking kids to activities when we’re flat out. From the bottom of our hearts thanks to each and every one of you. We appreciate you all!

OUR PROGRAM OUR PROGRAM

Our program revolves around the momma cow. Our Sires, their dams and siblings are scrutinized heavily before purchasing. We concentrate heavily on creating sound, fertile and easy fleshing females that will last. Most of our pastures are comprised of the steep Battle River hills, so foot and leg structure is key. Udders are a passion of ours; small teat size, properly spaced, adequate milk flow and suspension are a must. Our cows don’t get second chances, they raise a quality calf and come in bred on time or they catch a ride to town. We were told years ago to build the right cows and the bulls will take care of themselves and we stand by that motto today. We utilize AI and Embryo transfer to increase our rate of genetic advancement. The cows are on grass as long as possible and generally bale graze until close to calving time. We work together with the Lloydminster Animal Hospital to provide a complete herd health program and Bullseye for our herd nutrition needs.

Calving Ease Score This year we thought we would try something new for us and give each bull a score to help you better understand where we feel they fit in terms of calving ease.

Remember • There are multiple factors that affect calving ease: Environment, Feed Program, and Genetics.

• Keep in mind that 50% of your calf’s genetic birth weight relates back to the mother’s genetics and birth weight.

• There is a correlation to birth weight and growth and they are directly related.

To Help you with your selection we have given the bulls a rating 1-5 star. Taking in mind the following criteria: • Actual Birth Weight • BW EPD Score • CE EPD score • Shape and build of the bull • Consistency of birth weight and calving ease of sire and dam’s Pedigree

1 star - Recommended for cows only, with expected higher performance.

2 star - Recommended for Mature cows and younger cows.

3 star - Recommended for Cows and heifers with larger frame and lower birth

genetics with some supervision.

4 star - Safe for heifers with limited supervision

5 star - What we expect to be safe to use on heifers with very little

supervision and lower expected growth.

We were fortunate to come across this sire down south at Kody Traxel’s. He is a son of the great Coleman Bravo who has made a name for himself in siring easy fleshing, heavy muscled cattle. Just what we are always searching out. Bravo has to be one of the most mild mannered and easy doing bulls we have ever been around. We decided we should maybe take him out this fall and let him be seen. He received many positive remarks from many astute cattle producers from all over including international guests at Farmfair. Easily the easiest fleshing bull I have ever seen. We literally brought him home from his second breeding season at Macnabb’s show ready. He was fed grain for maybe 10 days other than at the shows.

We are extremely pleased with his first calf crop. They are exactly what we envisioned; modest in frame but huge in terms of shape, dimension and muscle. His daughters are tremendously consistent and have also been admired on pasture tours. Pedersen Boni Gal 235L was shown alongside her dam as well as on her own throughout the summer and fall by Quinn. 235L turned many heads and we were quizzed many times about selling her. That one will definitely be staying. If you like efficient cattle that maintain condition and have some early growth performance, I strongly recommend you look at a Bravo son.

Brooking Rise is backed by one of the most ideal cow families there is in the Angus industry. The first walking red sire here to lead off our red program. We could not be more pleased with how he has developed and bred. He has calved like a dream and his progeny are curve benders to say the least. He has an unbelievable quiet and easy to handle nature about him. He was selected as the Senior Champion and Reserve overall Grand Champion at Farmfair International 2023. His true legacy we feel is yet to come in the production of his daughters. They are just entering production and calving now. Easy fleshing, broody and efficient type females. Kurt and Becky of Pedersen Livestock have been a pleasure to work with, year after year. Their main priority is to do what’s right for their cowherd and bull pen and it shows in the quality and consistency in this year’s offering. I hope you can see this set of bulls in person.

The cowherd utilizes a year-round chelated mineral program that is balanced to the cow’s requirements and feed sources. This supports proper bull calf health and development from a young age. The bull development program is built to maximize forage utilization and gut health. All forages are sampled and analyzed to ensure quality feed sources are used. Once the calves are weaned, they are slowly transitioned to a TMR. The TMR is forage based and is designed to promote lean muscle growth, allowing the bulls to express their genetic potential. Rumen health is of upmost importance, which is why suitable protein sources and proper starch levels are fed to the bulls.
