Welcome to our Complete Cattle Dispersal
Welcome to the complete cow herd dispersal for the Lacombe Research & Development Centre (LacRDC). Offering these cattle at public auction supports continued growth of the sector by providing producers access to quality cattle that can contribute to herd growth and productivity. In addition to the offering in these pages, LacRDC will be sending 20 bred heifers, 30 bred cows and 50 open heifer calves to the Lethbridge Research & Development Centre (LethRDC)to begin a herd there. This new herd at LethRDC is part of AAFC’s on-going commitment to supporting beef research in Canada. The cow herd on offer here today has been developed with care and attention. Our cows function and produce under “real world management” and in “real world conditions.” No open cattle are kept, no feet are trimmed, no creep is fed, our culling program is very strict. We are constantly using the environment to apply pressure to our genetics. The cows graze for 240-250 days a year, and we seek to implement genetic progression to strengthen attributes in our herd that excel under that management. Our cows calve in February/March and go to grass June 1st. We wean the 1st week of September and cows go back to grass, or winter cereal until mid to late October when we move onto cereal swaths. The cows graze swaths with protein supplement tubs (during late gestation) until they are brought in to the yard to ready for calving in late January. This responsible feeding and development program along with the implementation of a strict 45 day breeding season has separated the wheat from the chaff, and the results are here today in these pages. We have always selected sires with the goal of raising moderate framed, easy fleshing females that thrive under low input responsible management. Fertility, feet, udders and temperament are maternal traits we continue to try and improve. Over the past 10 years we have also added above breed average carcass characteristics as a requirement of the bulls we utilize. Science has taught us that carcass characteristics are moderately to highly heritable and by adding this requirement to sire selection, we have seen measured improvement in the cooler. The females on offer here today have been derived mainly from a few very strong purebred cows that were transferred to LacRDC from the historic Onefour Research Station some 30 years ago. Those cows along with a few key open heifers purchased from Angus seedstock industry 18 years ago provided the foundation for the females presented here today. We place a great deal of emphasis on cow families, and we value and retain the daughters from our top cows. The culling has been done. We have a lot of faith in the cattle we offer in the pages that follow. Please consider this your invitation to join us on December 9th in Lacombe AB, to attend our sale. Please feel free to reach out to myself or any of the staff at OBI to answer questions about the offering or organize a tour of the cattle prior to the sale. Sincerely,

With the Rose 1019 cow up tight in the pedigree along with years of dependable Crowfoot genetics, the maternal is sure to be locked in - All 4 carry early service - If you like a little more frame and scale in your program without sacrificing maternal, this group fits the bill

- The 1st set of daughters sired by the 2506K bull purchased from Chapman Cattle Co. in 2024. 2506K graced the cover of the Chapman Cattle Co. catalog that year and still exhibits the type that warranted his selection - These daughters illustrate exactly why the bull was purchased, maternal excellence in abundance, with bulls like BC Robust 0807, Crowfoot Equation & Memento 0505X providing predictability - At the time of picture/video these 4 heifers were within 50lbs of each other - The 5121N heifer, although not a direct 2506K, carries the same lineage as the others with Robust and Momento. This heifer has been a favourite this summer, drawing attention from some of the most critical cattle men and women. Her dam 8004F has been a solid producer and still looks very youthful (SEE LOT 4)

Herd Health
“The Lacombe Research Centre implements a comprehensive herd health and animal care program developed with Lacombe Veterinary Centre. They utilize extensive individual animal record keeping and the corresponding data to make evidence-based decisions to enhance animal performance. The cow herd and calves are all fully vaccinated with modified live respiratory and 8way clostridial vaccines and receive an internal/external parasite control program. The pregnant cattle have all been confirmed twice with signs consistent with pregnancy. A breeding soundness evaluation, including semen testing, was performed on all the bulls.
