Into Our Studio.

Kendle Design Collaborative is proud to office at the Ellis property on Cattletrack Road. Far from the typical office environment, the Ellis property is an artist’s sanctuary hidden among the trees in Scottsdale. Originally homesteaded by George Ellis in the 30’s, the Ellis property is a serene refuge rich with hand-built homes and studios, three of which are now on the national historic registry. The entire property is full of history and art. Kendle Design Collaborative is proud to make its creative contribution here amidst the peaceful setting that is the Ellis property.

About our work Kendle Design Collaborative, located in Scottsdale Arizona, is an internationally acclaimed architectural firm specializing in regionally inspired modern design Our designs are not defined by imported historic styles or the latest fashion trends but instead are born exclusively of our client’s unique program needs, their values and the spirit of the land they have chosen to call home. What sets Kendle Design Collaborative apart? In a word AUTHENTICITY. What we practice is Regional Modernism. It’s not a “style”. It’s what we are passionate about, it’s what we believe in, it’s what is in our soul. When you look at our website, you won’t find Mediterranean, you won’t find Tuscan or French Country. It’s not who we are. The homes we design are in harmony with nature; they celebrate their context and reflect the unique values of the individuals we design for.

Founded by Brent Kendle, AIA, LEED AP in 2002, Kendle Design Collaborative designs have garnered numerous awards, and have graced the covers of several magazines including Luxe, Western Art and Architecture, and Phoenix Home and Garden. KDC’s projects have been featured in international design exhibits, books, and design journals from more than 20 countries.

Architect Cathleen Kebert Native to Arizona, Cathleen is one of the few individuals who enjoys the summer heat! Completing both her Bachelor and Master of Architecture degrees at Arizona State University, she focused on sustainable design strategies in the Sonoran Desert. Developing and refining SketchUp models to bring them to life is one of her favorite aspects of the design process. In her free time, she enjoys learning family recipes and traveling.

Brent Kendle spent his childhood seeking out Frank Lloyd Wright’s structures in the Midwest and Arizona, believing that homes designed with a connection to nature benefit physical well-being, enhance daily living, and raise the human spirit. Kendle’s passion leans towards modern design, Owner / Architect not as a style, but as a philosophy allowing the freedom to create homes Brent Kendle without stylistic limitations – homes that speak to the uniqueness of their place, time and the families that call them home.

Architectural Designer Jeff Martin

Jeff Martin is our Senior Architectural Designer and has been working at Kendle Design for the last seven years. Jeff has a strong passion for regional modern architecture and takes great pride in the work he does at KDC. Jeff can be found on the raw trails of the Matazal Mountains running more miles than any sane person should. Aside from his ultra-running affliction, Jeff is our office’s personal foodie. He is constantly educating us on the best restaurants that Arizona has to offer

Richard van Horne is a Scottsdale native who attended Arizona State University and graduated with honors, earning his master’s in architecture. Richard joined Kendle Design Collaborative in 2014 as an intern and has never looked back. When not designing custom modern homes, Richard enjoys spending time with his family and exploring all the best places that Arizona has to offer.

“Situated on a parcel of land with direct views of Camelback Mountain, this residence in Paradise Valley gives priority to the spectacle of nature in one way or another. The first and most visible is a canopy of overlapping and sharply angled wood planes that soar high above an outdoor living room, providing shelter from Arizona sun. Its form appears to be directly drawn from the mountain and immediately sets the tone of the experience for the first-time visitor. Further sustaining a dialogue with the geology of the region are the indigenous materials used; concrete, rammed earth and natural woods. While these materials from the soil lend a presence, they don’t take center stage; the extensive use of glass and metal makes the house decidedly modern and provides a conduit for the play of luminous desert light. The public spaces are arranged around the wide terrace with a wide wall of glass that retracts, enabling air and light to circulate freely and fill the home with life and movement during the day. The multitude of glazed surfaces and unusual angles provides an interesting spectrum of patters of light and shadow throughout the house, appropriately named Dancing Light.”

“Rock-solid even when viewed from miles afar, is an accurate description of this Scottsdale, Arizona residence. Desert Wing’s tremendously thick rammed-earth walls protrude from the Sonoran Desert; an equally immense overhanging roof of angled planes-designed to collect rainwater for circulation to the thirsty vegetation below appears to float over the structure, like the wing of its name and it very nearly does. The thick roof-line edged in locally mined copper cladding that radiates a warm orange glow when hit by the sun, lies above a thin strip of glass, creating the odd sense of lightness between the heavy forms. Heat-balancing raw concrete walls are complemented by polished concrete floors and wooden ceilings. An overflowing pool, directly accessible from a large terrace off the open living space as well a bedroom is divided by a tall rammed-earth wall from which springs a fanciful fountain. It is impossible to tame the desert.”

MERCEDES BENZ, A TESTAMENT TO MODERN DESIGN Mercedes Benz embarked on a national search to find four iconic modern American homes to use in their European marketing campaign. After reviewing hundreds of candidates the final four selected homes included not one but two homes designed by Kendle Design Collaborative. These homes, Desert Wing and Rammed Earth Modern were then extensively photographed by an international team and used in billboard, brochure and online advertising.

Bridge View

Bridge View Residence, faced all of the typical obstacles of a desert build along with a difficult build site. Abutting a desert wash and steep drop-off in the land, the plot didn’t offer many options for creating a beautiful sprawling home. The location also had limited views, and the clients wished to be able to see both the wash and the mountains. The solution that we came up with was to elevate the main living space and master suite, bridging it over the first floor. Placing the public spaces like the living room and kitchen on the upper floor instantly created the landscape views the clients wanted. This bridging of the second floor over the first also naturally lent itself to the creation of a minimalist structure. The exterior is made up of bright white block forms and flat roofs accented in deep black. It all keeps the home feeling fresh and contemporary while also maintaining a low profile so as not to obstruct views for surrounding neighbors.

Birds Nest

The Birds Nest Residence is characterized by strong geometric forms and materials reminiscent of mid-century modern architecture. The use of natural materials and the seamless relationship of interior to exterior spaces create an airy feeling of openness and expansive quality. The large open space of the Great Room and its direct relationship to the adjacent pool terrace serves as the organizing principle. This tall central volume has an unobstructed visual link to the Kitchen and Dining spaces as well as to both the enclosed front courtyard and the pool terrace. All rooms, including the “birds nest” on the second floor, have immediate access to a private courtyard, terrace or exterior space that give the residence an intimate scale. The native desert plants and trees serve as a counterpoint to soften the bold geometry and rectilinear building forms. The side walls are thoughtfully integrated into the landscape design creating serene courtyards while maintaining the owner’s desire for a high degree of privacy.

Desert Wash

A jagged wash bisecting the property provided unique inspiration for arranging the plan. Connected with bridges, hovering roof forms, and stone walks, the residence has constant views of the desert-wash ecosystem. The geometric edges of thick rammed-earth walls, deep overhangs, and solid masses contrast against the softness of the vegetation winding along the wash. Materials flow seamlessly from inside to out, blurring the line between interior and exterior living space. A visual delight, composed of nature and art, greet this home’s occupants at the end of every passage. Small openings afford glimpses to the wash below while light bands dance along the floor, essentially telling time. These add interest and engagement with nature, especially for the children of the home, who interact with this feature as they travel across the bridge to different areas of the home.

A modest single-story hillside home integrates into the surrounding desert while evoking the clean lines of a mid-century modern home. Humble materials such as rammed earth walls, limestone floors, and Douglass Fir wood ceilings complement the desert palette. These materials are woven through both the interior and exterior living spaces to unify these spaces. With a “cozy” scale and visually calm composition, the home’s minimalist approach to materials and details draws one close to art and nature through its sophisticated, clean elegance.
