KENDAL MOUNTAIN FESTIVAL

It’s a pleasure to welcome you to Kendal once again. This feels like a year where we’re really making new connections, pushing boundaries and creativity. Appropriate, therefore, that our theme this year is ‘Imagination’ which has inspired our programming across the board.
“No matter what people tell you, words and ideas can change the world.”
That’s what Robin Williams believed, and it’s a belief we share in. Authors, filmmakers, all of us have the power to change opinion.
At Kendal, we’re lucky enough to work with filmmakers and adventurers who are passionate in their work, and its ability to influence actions. We share that passion. And in a world of ever-increasing change, we recognise we can also play a role in shaping opinions.
The truth is that we cannot continue the way we are. This earth is a finite resource, and we are abusing it. We might feel powerless, but people can change, people can make a difference, and the best place to make a start is to examine yourself and your own actions.
That’s why we’re making changes at this year’s Festival, both visible and behind the scenes. We’re working in partnership with the University of Cumbria to develop a new, sustainable model of operation and we have a PhD student on board, Seonaid Lafferty, to help drive this forward. We’re reducing plastic use and working with venues on recycling. Increasingly we’re choosing to work with partners such as Columbia, Patagonia, Hydro Flask and others to create actions and messages – even entire lecture tours – that influence opinion. And, of course, we’re championing inspirational content from filmmakers and athletes.
We hope that you will be inspired to help us make Kendal a model of sustainability, and equally motivated to make changes in your own life.
As Jonathan Bamber, alpinist and scientist, recently wrote in The Alpine Journal on glacier change; “Time is rapidly running out for us to implement affordable and palatable mitigation strategies. We all have choices. Our future on the planet depends on those choices.”
Have a great Festival and we thank you and our fantastic sponsors (especially our presenting sponsor, Columbia) plus supporters, funders and the hundreds of wonderful volunteers for your vital support.
Share The Adventure!

Here you will find our Box Office, the Info Desk, the Guest Summit Lounge and our enormous tented village with its brand interaction and free talks. Look out for the Basecamp, the Shackleton Tent, the Lowe Alpine Yurt and the Advanced Basecamp - you might need a map! The Brewery Arts Centre is also the destination for some of our film screenings, many of our Literature Festival talks, our Film Awards and a slew of Festival speakers. Of course no festival will be a festival without bars, cafes, live music and parties - all to be found here.
However it doesn’t only happen at the Brewery - we keep growing! So stretching through the lanes and gunnels of Kendal we have other venues in use; including the super comfortable, state of the art Move Truck, Kendal’s Town Hall, the Shakespeare Centre, the Library, the Abbot Hall Social Club and the big one - the 900 seated Leisure Centre. The map at the back of the programme helps you find your way there!
...and what a programme it is! Films are at the heart of the Festival - we have over 80 of them screening over the weekend, divided into 18 different collections - which are mostly repeated several times over the Festival. Even with a day film pass you can’t do it all, so we recommend that you pick a few priority film programmes and arrive early for them - these sessions full up over the weekend! However if there’s an event you really want to attend and it clashes with a film programme, check when else it is being screened and use the handy fold -out planner at the back of the programme to plan your weekend!
We sometimes we have to make last minute changes so any Festival updates are communicated via: Twitter @mountainfest, Instagram #Kendal18, and Facebook @kendalmountainfestival plus old-skool noticeboards at the Brewery Arts Centre box office and Info Desk in the Basecamp Village.
There’s food and drink available at all our major venues. Lots of choice in particular at the Brewery Arts Centre - both at the restaurants and outside with concessions, also check out the bar at the Kendal Town Hall and Leisure Centre. Plus the town of Kendal is ready and waiting with over 40 bars, cafes and restaurants all within a few minutes walk of the main venues.
All our venues are accessible by foot or bicycle. You shouldn’t need to walk more than 20 minutes between any venues. As with any market town there is limited parking available especially in the immediate vicinity of the Brewery Arts Centre and Town Hall (Highgate). Rather than setting your Sat Nav for the centre of town (and potentially getting stuck in traffic on Highgate or around town’s notorious one way system) we recommend you point yourself towards a car park/location a little further away and walk to the Festival venues.
There’s so much going over the Festival weekend, so to make these next few pages a little simpler to understand, we’ve used these icons to let you know the type of event.
Any live event with a speaker, or two!
Film premieres featuring filmmakers and/or stars of the films.
A wide variety of talks from authors.
Catch our exhibiting artists talking about their work.
We’ve got bands and DJs playing at venues all over Kendal, all weekend!
Intrigued..? There are five secret events taking place, we won’t tell you what’s going on. Apart from where they are, and that only gets announced at the last minute...

The eagerly-awaited film from Nick Brown, traces the highs (and lows) of the UK climbing scene in the 1980s.
The 1980s saw climbing standards rise exponentially. A small group of climbers would do anything to allow themselves to climb full-time; sleeping in sheds underneath crags, shoplifting for food and clothes, and living off the dole.
‘Statement Of Youth’ features those climbers who went on to become some of the most influential figures in the history of British climbing, including Jerry Moffatt, Ben Moon, Johnny Dawes, Andy Pollitt, Martin ‘Basher’ Atkinson, Chris Gore, Zippy, Craig Smith, Steve the Pro, Mark Leach, Quentin Fisher and Ed Douglas.

We invite you to join us for the 2018 Kendal Literature and Arts Festival, a place to explore new connections to ideas, words and wanderings within nature. This year’s Festival theme is ‘connection’, and within our literature and arts offering we are diving into nature connection. We want to bring out the tangible; the everyday practices that keep us rooted and adventurous. We believe that nature connection enables the kind of mindset to think innovatively, it encourages big picture down to small detail awareness; what’s changing around us, and how do we fit in? To communicate with nature and landscape in a way that forces us to inhabit the present. We are lucky at Kendal to host authors who write from a dramatic range of environments. Hear from those whose back door might be a glacier, a desert, an Icelandic shoreline, a Lakeland fell. Our surroundings may be miles apart, but our findings and imaginings both connect us and challenge us.
All of the events are listed in this programme (look out for the icon!).
For full details, pick up a Literature Festival programme from the Basecamp Village info desk, box office or any of the venues.
“More than 50% of species in Britain are in decline. We have lost approaching half our wildlife in half a century. There are over sixty birds on the RSPB “red list”, including curlews, skylarks, cuckoos and lapwings.
Nature is slipping fast from our lives and landscapes. We can change this - but we need hope and belief to help us. Hope that change is possible, even in dark times. Belief that our connection with the natural world is more than a luxury; that it is vital to our hearts, lives and health, and to the species with which we share the world. Hope that the stories we tell can shape the future, politically as well as emotionally, for the better. Belief that coming together in communities and groups – connecting across gulfs of experience and time – is a force for good.
At one of the most divided moments in the modern history of these islands, this Festival celebrates and proves the vital values of “connection” – between people, cultures, places and species.”
We’re delighted that Robert is joining us in Kendal this year where he will share spell songs from ‘The Lost Words’ with over 1600 schoolchildren at our free Schools Sessions on Friday.

Can you spare 10 minutes to complete a survey with a chance to win Kendal Mountain Festival merchandise?
2018 has been an exciting year for Kendal Mountain Festival.
The team have drawn from their values to reflect on their history, what they do and what they want to do to make the Festival more sustainable. Consequently, the team, their ideas and partnerships, content and tours have grown. There has been a lot of work behind the scenes, and the Festival’s commitment to sustainability is evident in this years program (see list below). The team have worked creatively to deliver entertaining content that celebrates connection: Of people, ideas, community and passion, to our environment.
Last year, we released a survey to find out who was coming to the Festival and why. It also asked about your behaviour and attitude towards sustainability and what the Festival does to support that. The results showed a large proportion of the audience attend to reinforce their sense of belonging within the outdoor community and be inspired by athletes and adventurers they admire. It highlighted that the audience exhibit strong values and awareness of sustainability, and seek to live more sustainably and create a sustainable community.
The survey will run again this year, alongside deeper exploration and feedback from key partners through interviews (if you are interested in taking part, please contact us). Kendal Mountain Festival sustainability is guided by the Good Life Goals: A set of personal actions that everyone can take to help support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We not only want to be sustainable, but to be a platform for learning and discussion about sustainability.
Your feedback is crucial to developing our sustainability strategy, please complete a survey online here: www.surveymonkey. co.uk/r/Kendal18 or come and see us at the Information Desk, Basecamp.

This is the second year of Adventure Activism at Kendal. The Tour created with our partners PATAGONIA had an incredible response in our first year and as wider public awareness grows of key environmental issues the demand for storytelling from adventurers at the forefront of key campaigns also grows.
The seam of environmental content is rich and road at Kendal this year with the influence evident in lectures, films and special events and industry presentations.
Our final date of the 2018 UK Tour will see the big premiere of the film ‘The Undamaged’ from filmmaker and activists Rok Rozman and Carmen Kuntz, we’ll also hear from key people in influential NGO’s and from the PATAGONIA team who are industry leaders in standing up for the planet and the people threatened by climate change.

We were delighted in April this year to support Durham County Council in delivering their first Adventure Festival in conjunction with Kendal Mountain Festival. Their aim was to create an event that celebrated everything about the great outdoors; and deliver a festival that was an informal, fun and inspiring place to be. And they did! It was an inspiring three days with screenings of some of the best films from the 2017 International Film Competition and a great line-up of speakers including: Andy Cave, Anna McNuff, Mark Beaumont, Elise Downing, Dave Cornthwaite and the athletes from Abandoned Playgrounds (just don’t mention the high lining in the theatre!).
The response has been great and therefore they are doing it all over again next year – 26 to 28 April 2019.
