This reflection space is a system of alternating primary and secondary trusses that canteliever above you, providing shelter from the elements, while also framing out multiple viewsheds. The structure consists of thirty five shifting members that create a unique lighting condition within a semi-enclosed area, which blocks out the harsh Buffalo winds. The shifting also allows the structure to act as a continuation of the existing path, rather than just being a habitable space.

Eleven 2x12 members face southwest, the direction that most of the wind comes from, while the remaining twenty four members comprise the rest of the space. The prefabricated components were connected using a spline joint and then reinforced with 2x4’s, screwed in at the midpoints.

Centro De Las Artes (Center for the Arts)

Fourth Year Studio

Study Abroad: Costa Rica

In December 2018, a large Strangler Fig fell on the art building of the Centro de Educación Creativa (Center of Creative Education) in Monteverde, Costa Rica during a fifth grade art class. Luckily, no one was seriously injured, but this school no longer has a dedicated space for art.

The concept for this new art building is to create a centralized courtyard that provides the school with additional interior and exterior gathering space, while also creating better connections throughout the campus and stabilizing the ground around the school.

The new space provides the school with a larger footprint in order to provide them more space than what they asked for. This building features separate grand double height entrance

and exhibition spaces, a fine arts class room with 12 foot ceilings, a mulitiuse space that can be used for ceramics, performances, etc., both a private and public patio, and a large central courtyard.

Ripple provides the inhabitant with various spatial and sensual conditions, through sensory deprivation and ocular perception at three levels: above datum, at datum, and below datum, in order to deeply connect the occupant with the water.

Through structural and sensory approaches, Ripple provides the inhabitant with the opportunity to engage with the water and its ecology while being nestled in a protective membrane. By challenging the relationship between skin and structure in EXO through both inversion and suspension, it allowed for a deviation in conventional building and construction ideologies, thus creating a stronger relationship between the dweller and his or her surrounding environment. The suspension of this womb like enclosure within an actively bent exoskeleton became the driving experiential and tectonic factor for the

duration of the semester. The inner membrane contains varying degrees of tension, based on traffic density, allowing the occupant to experience the water’s natural forces, which in turn amplifies any visual or auditory exhibit occurring within the space. People are able to relish in the current’s gentle and supple undulation while also wallowing in its warm sense of weightlessness.

Threshold

Threshold uses a combination of independent systems that intersect and overlap to create spatial conditions. These conditions vary in the amount of light that enters the space which is dependent on the conditions of my field drawing and model. When studying Villa Barbaro, I focused on Palladio’s hierarchy of front to back views versus the side to side. Vertical and horizontal elements were separated and scaled respectively based on proportions found in the villa, being 3, 5, 9 and 2, 4, 8. The ratio of light to dark plexi glass determines the amount of light that space receives as well as the program of that space.
