40 years ago, the current owners bought the sad neglected home, to the shock and horror of their friends They made its restoration and augmentation their life's work. They drastically altered the basic floor plan and reimagined and constructed new details for the main house. The original carriage house partially burned down in the 1940s. Using the salvaged timber, Margaret and Floyd built a two car garage. The current owners carefully deconstructed that garage which was too far gone to salvage and, using all the wood from the original carriage house, designed and built the one that exists today which contains two independent living environments. Today, the old farmhouse has been completely reborn to once again take her place as the crown jewel she once was. The only original survivors? The base of the original water tower which supplied water to the house and farm and the majestic Black Walnut tree purchased by the original owner at Portland's 1905 World's Fair, still standing proud.

THE HISTORY

The Stately Beginnings

Commissioned by Philip Blampied, owner of a prominent local drayage company, the house was constructed between 1898 and 1902, and was originally the crown jewel of a 10-acre gentleman's farm. It was a cultural and social center for the community and hosted grand society galas and WWI fundraisers But when Philip failed to modernize his horse-drawn drayage company for automobiles, the Great Depression forced him to subdivide the farm and sell the farmhouse and remaining acre to his employee Margaret Larson

The Chainsaw Era

By selling his beloved farm to Margaret, Philip thought his home was in safe hands. He was wrong. Margaret detested Victorian trim. She had her husband, Floyd, systematically strip the home of its original late Victorian ornamentation by taking a chainsaw to the exterior, hacking off the decorative details, lowering all the interior ceilings to eight feet and removing the rounded veranda in lieu of an additional bedroom for their ever expanding family. Later structural changes were disaster-driven; an open pantry destroyed during the 1962 Columbus Day Storm was rebuilt as the current kitchen sun porch using insurance proceeds. In later years, an open dry-storage patio was enclosed to create a ground-floor apartment for the aging Margaret

Neglect & Modern Restoration

Following decades of minimal maintenance, the home sat boarded up and vacant on the market for seven years By the early 1990s, the structure lacked heating, had compromised electrical systems, and was considered unlivable.
