A Message from our CEO | Dream Makers

John Lennon once said,
“A dream you dream alone is only a dream. A dream you dream together is reality.”
As I think about this bit of wisdom from the late music icon, I find myself marveling at how very true it is…especially here at KenCrest.
It’s no accident that a vital part of our mission is to empower dreams. We know the importance of having dreams…of setting goals to achieve…of having plans to look forward to. We know that dreams help to create a life full of meaning and joy. We also know that dreams are for everyone, regardless of age or abilities.
As you turn the pages of this report, you’ll see that dream makers play a variety of roles—from dedicated service providers to hopeful individuals to generous corporations. You’ll learn about the early intervention services that two-year-old Evie receives from KenCrest. Evie works toward a brighter tomorrow with the support of her mother, a team of specialists, and a special instructor—all of whom play a vital role in shaping Evie’s dreams for her future by providing her with better communication skills and a greater ease in performing daily activities.
The story of Maxine and Barbara, long-time friends and housemates in their 80s who reside at a KenCrest community living home, will inspire and amaze you.
With a shared love of bowling, these two women use adaptive technology to light up the lanes and bring home trophies for their stellar efforts. With the dream of winning another game, league, or tournament always in mind, Maxine and Barbara never let anything—including their wheelchairs—prevent them from living their best lives.
You’ll also read about the dedication of our longstanding partner in early childhood development and care, PNC Bank. In April 2019, the PNC Grow Up Great ® program celebrated its 15th anniversary of supporting high-quality early learning for young children, including those who attend our early learning centers in Philadelphia. With $500 million invested in this initiative across the country, PNC enables young minds to dream big.
You may say I’m a dreamer, but at KenCrest, I can assure you that I’m not the only one. So many of you have played an important role in making the dreams of those we serve come true, and for that, we are most grateful. I hope you’ll continue to work beside us as we empower others to imagine, to hope, and of course, to dream.
In your service,

Evie | Dreaming of a Happy Future

In her two short years of life, Evie has experienced more than her share of difficulties.
Before Evie was born, she was diagnosed with a heart condition and Down syndrome, which causes developmental and physical growth delays. Her mother Tina knew that there would be many challenges ahead for her unborn child, but she prepared herself as best she could. Within five days of her birth, the doctors discovered that Evie had a blocked intestine and needed surgery at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
“We knew about her heart and the Down syndrome, but the blocked intestine was a surprise,” said Tina. “When Evie was about a month-and-a-half old, I requested the same physical therapist through KenCrest that helped my sister’s children. Evie needed to strengthen her body for the heart surgery that followed at six months. Then, four days after her heart surgery, Evie needed another operation when the stitching came undone.”
In addition to the physical therapy, Evie began receiving occupational therapy services after her heart surgeries in order to move her from a feeding tube to
being able to take a bottle. When Evie turned one year old, she also started speech therapy.
Fast forward one year, and Evie is flourishing with her team of caring therapists and a special instructor through KenCrest. She’s learning to use sign language, do mouth exercises, sing songs, and repeat sounds and words. She eats meals by herself and drinks from a cup. She puts puzzles together, learns how to play with toys and hold crayons properly, and puts her baby doll to sleep. And to her physical therapist’s delight, Evie is almost walking.
“She’s making the progress that the therapists like to see,” said Tina. “They have her working on being able to focus—using toys and tools for their actual purpose and seeing tasks through to the end. To see how much progress she’s made in the last six months is amazing, and Evie is always happy to see the therapists. They really care and want what’s best for Evie, and I’ve never felt alone or stuck…they are always there to help me,” Tina added.
E Arly INtErvENtION
Susanna, Evie’s speech therapist, is thrilled with the advancement in Evie’s communication skills.
“Evie’s progress in her use of words and signs is so awesome,” said Susanna. “Her mom is a wonderful role model who uses strategies during play as well as during their daily routines to give Evie the confidence she needs to be a superstar!”
From the very start of Evie’s therapy, Tina has had one dream for her little girl: to be happy. With the help of the KenCrest team, Evie engages with people, talks and jibber-jabbers often, and enjoys learning.
“I don’t expect Evie to be able to do everything right away, but I’m so happy that she has support from KenCrest,” said Tina. “Things will take time, but we’ll get there eventually. Evie is a very special girl and the most amazing blessing to everyone she comes in contact with. I just want her to be happy and know that she can do whatever she wants to do.”
“All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them.”

Maxine and Barbara, ages 86 and 80, respectively, have been friends and housemates for longer than either of them can remember.
From an independent living facility in Philadelphia to a residence owned by Lynch Homes in 1992 (which was acquired by KenCrest) to their current home in Roslyn, PA, Maxine and Barbara have spent decades together. In spite of their age, these ladies show few signs of slowing down, as they actively take part in their community, go shopping, travel, attend the same church each Sunday in Philadelphia as they have since 1985, and enjoy their favorite pastime—bowling.
Since the age of 13, Maxine has loved to bowl. But it wasn’t until she met Lylian, who was the Director of Recreation Services at the former United Cerebral
Palsy of Philadelphia, that Maxine really learned how to participate in the sport with adaptive technology.
“Bowling from a wheelchair can be challenging, but I taught Maxine the art behind using adaptive equipment so that she could bowl,” said Lylian. “Then she got Barbara interested in the sport as well. Both ladies use an aluminum ramp. Then they are handed their ball, and they adjust the ball to line up with markings that indicate where the ball will travel down the lane. For more than 30 years, these ladies have competed and done very, very well.”
Maxine and Barbara travel into Philadelphia two Saturdays each month from September through May to take part in a league that Lylian now runs for seniors with disabilities at Erie Lanes. KenCrest staff support and cheer on Maxine and Barbara when they go bowling, while Lylian and program volunteers assist with the ramps and ball retrieval. The league wraps up each May with a tournament before taking a summer break. With their adaptive ramps to guide them, these ladies skillfully rack up strikes and spares.

If there were any doubt about the love and dedication that these ladies have for their sport, it can be put to rest quickly by tallying their awards. With almost 100 trophies between them, Maxine and Barbara proudly display 17 pieces of their well-earned hardware around their living room (the rest reside in a closet). Maxine, who purchased her own ball with her name on it, has traveled to places like Connecticut to compete on a national level many times, bringing home multiple gold, silver, and bronze medals.
“The staff at KenCrest takes me to the bowling alley because they know that bowling is my favorite sport,” said Maxine. “It’s nice living here…I get to do whatever I like to do.”
In the spring of 2019, Maxine won another first place trophy in her division at the end-of-year tournament
“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.”
— Eleanor Roosevelt
at Erie Lanes with a game-high score of 215 and a two-game total of 323. Barbara took third place with a total of 208.
“These ladies are excellent bowlers,” said Juanita, the lead staff member in their residence. “Maxine kept getting strikes and spares, and everyone was clapping for her and giving her hugs. It was quite a day.”
When asked about the role KenCrest plays in helping her to achieve her dream of continuing to participate in the sport she enjoys, Barbara expressed how grateful she is for KenCrest.
“They take me bowling, they sign me up to play, and they pay for it,” said Barbara. “I like bowling a lot. I didn’t win last year, but Maxine won first place and she said it was both of ours [the trophy]. This year, I won third place, and I was so happy.”

volunteering at KenCrest | Making Dreams a Reality

One of the best ways to learn about KenCrest’s mission, and more importantly the people we support, is to volunteer at one of our programs. Throughout the year, KenCrest welcomes groups and individuals who want to make an impact in their communities. In the process, these volunteers are able to interact with those we serve and their staff, learning about their day-to-day lives and what is important to them.
In partnership with BB&T and their volunteer initiative, BB&T Lighthouse Project, one of our community living homes in Philadelphia received a garden makeover this spring. A hardworking group provided shrubs, rose bushes, flowers, and all the mulch and tools needed to bring the small, white home to life on the outside. The crew spent hours

cutting out beds, as well as arranging and planting flowers along the house, but the highlight of the day was sharing pizza with the consumers and staff at the house! Volunteers were able to learn about their daily routines, interests, and how they planned to water and care for the plants.
Thank you, BB&T, for your hard work and treating our KenCrest family as your own!
A Special thank you
“A dream doesn’t become reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination, and hard work.”
— Colin Powell

For ten years, KenCrest has partnered with local businesses and organizations to help young adults ages 17-21 gain valuable work experience through the Project SEARCH program.
Project SEARCH is a national school-to-work internship program developed at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, which provides job training and work experience with one-to-one job coaching for individuals with intellectual disabilities and/or autism. KenCrest operates two, nine-month Project SEARCH programs at Phoenixville Hospital (Phoenixville, PA) and at GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals (Collegeville, PA). Several students have obtained gainful employment after they graduated the program, including George, who continues to be connected to KenCrest through the Supported Employment program.
Ever since George was five years old, he remembers going to Morris Arboretum to learn about plants and trees.
“I’ve liked coming here since I was little,” said George. “It’s a place to learn about plants and nature and be together. I’ve known this place for most of my life, and I wanted to have a job on the outside that fits my interests.”
Luckily for George, when he was wrapping up his time with Project SEARCH, a job opened up at Morris Arboretum, and he was encouraged by his job coach to apply. Although George did not get the

first job he interviewed for at Morris Arboretum, the staff there and his job coach asked him to consider applying for the Custodial Assistant position – and he got it! Now, every weekday, George is one of the first people to arrive on the property and helps to get the facility opened up and ready for visitors. George unlocks the doors, turns on the lights, restocks supplies, and keeps the visitor’s center and restrooms in tip-top shape. While proudly wearing his Morris Arboretum staff shirt, George proclaimed that he “likes to make sure everyone has a safe environment when they’re here.”
George’s passion for his job is evident. He continues to learn as much as he can about the history and the plants at the Arboretum. He is excited to grow and said, “I’ve been learning history as I go along…if I get a promotion one day, I hope that it will be as an official tour guide.”
He recently took a big step towards that promotion by getting his drivers license. With the help of his family, the encouragement from staff at KenCrest, and a few lessons at driving school, George passed

his driving test, which means that he is able to use the golf carts at Morris Arboretum to complete his day-to-day tasks.
George credits Project SEARCH for preparing him for his job. “I learned how to work more independently and not have to get help from all my mentors. And the more time I was independent, I found ways to make use of my time. I’ve learned how to interact with more people on the job and always ask questions when I don’t understand something, to be the most successful intern I could be, and to finish strong,” he said.
When reflecting on his favorite part of the job at Morris, George had a very thoughtful answer: “I come up with process improvements that don’t only help me, but they will help the next person who has my job.”
KenCrest is proud to see George’s dream become a reality through his determination and persistent drive to improve. We can’t wait to see where his dreams take him next!
“Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world.”

Since 2011, KenCrest has received support from PNC Bank and the PNC Grow Up Great ® program, which celebrates its 15th anniversary this year.
What started as a small volunteer group from PNC helping at our Kensington Early Education Center has grown over the past eight years into a meaningful partnership that focuses on ensuring that the children in our Centers have the best start to their educational journey.
This year, a grant from PNC supported teacher training in the High Scope Curriculum so that they are prepared to teach early learners with a wellrounded, effective, and research-based program. This curriculum is critical in developing strong young minds. Through this grant, PNC demonstrates their

understanding that one of the best ways to bolster early education is to make sure the teachers have all the tools they need to start the new school year.
Since 2014, PNC has donated $64,725 that went directly to pre-kindergarten scholarships through the Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program. This amounted to more than 380 weeks of tuition support for many families at our six Early Learning Centers. These funds allow families to send their child to a high-quality early learning program that is safe and builds consistency in the child’s routine. Scholarships also cover before and after care for families that are unable to pick up or drop off their children during the normal school hours. The ripple effect of these scholarships means that families are able to gain and maintain employment while the child receives a well-rounded early education. Again, PNC shows their understanding that by supporting the family, they in turn ensure a strong foundation that children and their families can build upon.
PNC’s support goes beyond a monetary commitment. Each of the past eight years, KenCrest has had the opportunity to host PNC in our classrooms to spark the students’ creativity and sense of exploration. PNC has brought their mobile planetarium and beginner science curriculum to our Centers, giving students their first taste of the stars. They have also volunteered their time in the classrooms, reading and doing activities with students that help to expand their understanding of their communities and the world around them.
In the spring of this year, the Realty Services Group within PNC stepped up to construct, paint, and fill Little Lending Libraries for each of our Early Learning Centers.
This had been a dream of KenCrest’s Early Learning Program Director for several years, and PNC jumped at the chance to show their creativity and building skills. Each box was beautifully painted with children’s book characters. When the boxes were delivered, students in our program added their handprints and art to the posts on which the boxes would be installed. Each Little Lending Library is placed on the sidewalk in front of an Early Learning Center and is available to all community members to “leave a book, take a book.” It was a beautiful example of how corporate volunteers, children, and teachers can strive to make an impact on their little corner of the world to make it a bit brighter and to spread the joy of learning and reading together.
We thank PNC, their foundation, and most of all their dedicated volunteers who continue to be dream makers for our community of early learners in so many ways.

the golden Book
In the early 20th century, KenCrest friend and board member William P.M. Braun established the RiverCrest “Garden of Sweet Memories,” in which tributes and memorials were recorded for loved ones. Our KenCrest Golden Book continues this tradition: In an impressive leather-bound volume, we record the names of any individuals for which honorary or memorial gifts are given in calligraphy. The names of the following indivdiuals have been added in the past year to the Golden Book.

2nd Annual KenCrest Masters: Blue Bell Country Club
The second annual KenCrest Masters event, held on October 13, 2018 at the Blue Bell Country Club and Normandy Farm Hotel & Conference Center, entertained more than 280 guests while raising awareness of KenCrest’s mission. Thanks to the support of our co-chairs CBIZ, Tony Consoli, and Kevin and Katie Dougher, we raised over $176,000 that benefitted our services!
Guests enjoyed 18 holes of golf on Blue Bell’s signature Arnold Palmer course, decorative wood crafting with Just Paint, and delectable sushi making. The evening celebration served up cocktails, dinner, live and silent auctions, and the back-by-popular-demand wine bottle ring toss!
A $2,000 donation that underwrote staff tickets for those who couldn’t afford to attend made the event a little extra special. Thank you to all of our sponsors, participants, and volunteers!
