Morelli is late; when he finally sweeps in it is too late to rehearse with the company. Through a hilarious series of mishaps, Il Stupendo is given a double dose of tranquilizers which mix with the booze he has consumed and he passes out. What to do? Max is an aspiring singer and Saunders persuades him to get into Morelli’s Otello costume and try to fool the audience into thinking he’s Il Stupendo. Max succeeds admirably, but Morelli comes to and gets into his other costume. Now two Otellos are running around in costume and two women are running around in lingerie, each thinking she is with Il Stupendo!

Now an aspiring architect in Terre Haute, Indiana, Willum Cubbert has often told his friends of the debt he owes to Rick Steadman, a fellow ex-GI he has never met but who saved his life after he was wounded in Vietnam. He has written to Rick to say that, as long as he is alive, “you will have somebody on Earth who will do anything for you”—so Willum is delighted when Rick shows up unexpectedly at his apartment. But his delight soon fades as it becomes apparent that Rick is a hopeless “nerd”—a bumbling oaf with no social sense, little intelligence and less tact.

A late middle aged zoo attendant still has lingering visions of being a songwriter, and these hopes are buoyed by his mistress who

On the day the Pope is making his first visit to New York, the mistress talks him into calling his old school chum, now a big Hollywood producer, for a job writing music for films. At the same time his son comes home AWOL from Fort Dix carrying a bomb with which he intends to blow up the Pope in Yankee Stadium. The songwriter has meantime called for the jiffy wagon to come and take away his cuckoo wife (her name is Bananas).

The big time producer arrives shortly after his fiancée, who has broken her hearing aid, and at about the same time that three sightseeing nuns drop in from the roof. The son’s bomb goes off prematurely, killing a bunch of these characters, and the producer ends by eloping to Australia with the songwriter’s mistress.

LEE MERIWETHER

Lee grew up in San Francisco, attended high school with Johnny Mathis, and was a student at City College when she heard that she had been nominated to be a contestant in the Miss San Francisco pageant. She won, and kept right on winning up through Miss California and eventually Miss America, 1955 (the first Miss America pageant to be televised).

She then became the first permanent “Today Girl” with Dave Garraway (and Fred J. Muggs, the chimp) on THE TODAY SHOW, which lead to numerous guest starring roles on television (LEAVE

IT TO BEAVER, PERRY MASON, THE FBI, THE PHIL SILVERS SHOW, THE FUGITIVE, F TROOP, THE DORIS DAY SHOW, MISSION IMPOSSIBLE, LAND OF THE GIANTS, STAR TREK, MATCH GAME, CIRCUS OF THE STARS) and eventually regular roles on series like THE TIME TUNNEL, THE NEW ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW, BARNABY JONES, THE NEW MUNSTERS, and ALL MY CHILDREN (on which she still plays matriarch Ruth Martin).

Lee was also on the big screen; most notably as Catwoman in the 1966 feature, BATMAN with Adam West, NAMU, ANGEL IN MY POCKET with Andy Griffith, and as Rock Hudson’s wife in THE UNDEFEATED starring John Wayne.

Throughout her career she has never lost her love of the stage.

Having studied with Lee Strasberg, one of the founders of The Actor’s Studio in New York, she has continued to work and study her craft as long-time member of Theatre West, a nationally known performance workshop and theatre in Los Angeles where the original SPOON RIVER ANTHOLOGY— starring her friends, Joyce Van Patten and Betty Garrett—was created and eventually sent to Broadway. Lee understudied both women in that cast and starred in an anniversary production directed by Ms. Garrett.

THE WOMEN OF SPOON RIVER: THEIR VOICES FROM THE HILL

Lee Meriwether has adapted SPOON RIVER ANTHOLOGY into a one-woman show, THE WOMEN OF SPOON RIVER: THEIR VOICES FROM THE HILL, in which she brings to life over twenty different women from the pages of Edgar Lee Masters’ epic collection of poems. Each poem is an epitaph of a dead citizen of the fictional Illinois town of Spoon River, delivered by the dead themselves. They speak about the sorts of things one might expect: some recite their histories and turning points, others make observations of life from the outside, and petty ones complain of the treatment of their graves, while few tell how they really died. Speaking without reason to lie or fear the consequences, they construct a picture of life in their town that is shorn of façades. The interplay of various villagers — e.g. a bright and successful man crediting his parents for all he’s accomplished, and an old woman weeping because he is secretly her illegitimate child — forms a gripping, if not pretty, whole.

by Kenneth Atkins — Ms. Meriwether will premiere this new production in the Robinson Theater on the IU Southeast campus in New Albany, Indiana, as ACT I of the evening. For ACT II, Ms. Meriwether will discuss her life and career and take questions from the audience.

Agatha Christie’s hit play about a group of strangers stranded in a boarding house during a snow storm, one of whom is a murderer. The suspects include the newly married couple who run the house, and the suspicions that are in their minds nearly wreck their perfect marriage. Others are a spinster with a curious background, an architect who seems better equipped to be a chef, a retired Army major, a strange little man who claims his car has overturned in a drift, and a jurist who makes life miserable for everyone. Into their midst comes a policeman, traveling on skis. He no sooner arrives, than the jurist is killed. Two down, and one to go. To get to the rationale of the murderer’s pattern, the policeman probes the background of everyone present, and rattles a lot of skeletons. The Mousetrap opened in the West End of London in 1952, and has been running continuously since then. With well over 24,000 performances so far, it is the longest running show of the modern era.

The original production of The Fantasticks opened May 3, 1960 in a small theatre in New York’s Greenwich Village. The musical tradition created by Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt continues to this day. In addition to its near constant presence Off-Broadway, The Fantasticks has been performed in every state and nearly every corner of the world. It’s the longest-running show in the US, and the longest-running musical in the world. The Fantasticks tells the story of a young man and the girl next door, whose parents have built a wall to keep them apart. The youngsters nevertheless contrive to meet and fall in love. Their parents, meanwhile, are congratulating themselves, for they have erected the wall and staged a feud in order to achieve, by negation, a marriage between their willfully disobedient children. The Fantasticks features iconic songs such as, “Try To Remember” and “Soon It’s Gonna Rain.”
