More power to your tennis elbow, Claire W e have spoken many times about the sporting prowess of Birmingham and the West Midlands. And it just seems to get better.

Aston Villa on the brink of qualifying for Europe next season, the mouthwatering prospect of a 2026-27 Premier League “derby” against newlypromoted Coventry City, an amazing year of international and domestic cricket lined up for Edgbaston and much more.

There have been some disappointments. Among them are Wolves’ demotion to the Championship and Birmingham City not fulfilling their full potential on the field of play. But prospects for their future are bright, with great plans for a new “Powerhouse Stadium” in Bordesley Green and Wolves will surely bounce back.

Among all of this, there has been one great consistent sporting element - the Edgbaston Priory Club. The private members’ tennis, squash and leisure club has quietly gone about its business for 150 years.

Along the way there have been memorable events and the discovery of amazing talent.

As long ago as 1881 it launched one of the earliest open lawn tennis

competitions and among the winners was Maud Watson, who went on to become the first ladies’ singles champion at Wimbledon.

In more recent years it has staged Davis Cup matches, produced Wimbledon champion Ann Jones as well as multi-world squash champion Jonah Barrington.

Along the way it hosted – flourishing under a variety of competition sponsors – some of the biggest names in world tennis, including Billie Jean King, Martina Navratilova and Maria Sharapova, Bjorn Borg, Jimmy Connors, Ilia Nastase and Arthur Ashe.

And now it is preparing to once again to be in the global tennis spotlight, attracting stars of the men’s and women’s games to the Birmingham Lexus Open. It is popular among top international players because it provides rare and valuable practice on grass courts ahead of Wimbledon.

And that is because, says Edgbaston Priory CEO Claire Daniel-Lepore, Edgbaston’s grass courts are second only to Wimbledon. More power to your tennis elbow, we say Claire.

Broadcaster joins Brumbassadors A

n award-winning broadcaster has spoken of her determination to tell Birmingham’s stories on the national stage, as she reflected on her career at Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce’s latest Brumbassadors event.

Marverine Cole, a newsreader on ITV’s Good Morning Britain, told more than 100 delegates at Birmingham City Football Club: “Talking about Birmingham and having stories on a national platform are really important to me.”

‘I think we all acknowledge that we (Brummies) are seen as a bit of an underdog’ Marverine – who has worked for BBC Midlands Today, ITV and Sky News – was the “Legendary Brummie” for the third edition of Brumbassadors, an initiative launched by the Chamber and Birmingham City to champion positive news stories and opportunities across the city.

During a Q&A with the Chamber’s deputy CEO Raj Kandola, she described making the leap from local to national and international broadcasting –

often having to mask her accent because Brummies were “an underdog” in a Londoncentric industry.

“Even just making the leap to work for an international news channel, I think we all acknowledge that we (Brummies) are seen as a bit of an underdog,” Marverine said.

“But when I got there, there was a lot of disquiet – ‘oh, she's from Birmingham - what does she know? Oh, we can hear a bit of your Brummie accent’.

“I was reading world news about earthquakes and terror attacks. But there was still disquiet there that I had to overcome.”

But despite these challenges, the Birmingham City University graduate has remained determined to put her home city at the forefront of her work.

She revealed: “I produced a documentary about black women's experiences of mental illness for BBC Radio 4 and my case studies were women from Birmingham to make sure it was rooted in Birmingham experiences and experiences of black women.

“The charity Mind have a media awards and I won Journalist of the Year for that documentary, which I’m very proud of.

“Talking about Birmingham and having stories on a national stage are really important to me.”

Marverine was then joined by panellists Jason Wouhra, CEO of Lioncroft Wholesale; Birmingham City’s chief marketing officer Liam MacManus and Caroline Davis, MD and producer at events company Outdoor Places Usual Spaces (OPUS).

The panel discussed opportunities and challenges across business, sport and culture in Birmingham.

Dr Jason Wouhra spoke of how Birmingham’s diverse community enabled his family to build their business, as well as providing him with opportunities such as becoming chair of the Institute of Directors and Chancellor of Aston University.

Liam MacManus, a recent recruit to Birmingham City, said the club’s ambitions on and off the pitch – including the £3bn Sports Quarter regeneration project – made the opportunity too good to turn down.

Caroline Davis talked about some of the cultural projects OPUS have been involved in such as the Commonwealth Games Festival programme, Birmingham Light Festival and Ozzy Osbourne’s funeral cortege – the latter being organised at just six days’ notice.

Legion gets arboretum honour The National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire is to become the Royal British Legion Remembrance Gardens from September 2026.

The rebranding follows the full integration of the 150-acre estate with the Royal British Legion, the parent charity of the Arboretum since 2003.

This development reflects the evolution of the popular visitor destination over the past 25 years and the central role it plays in RBL’s vision to bring society together to recognise, remember, and support the Armed Forces community.

The integration of charity governance structures will enable sustained investment into the estate, building on the arboretum’s success and legacy, helping create new opportunities for people to engage with Remembrance.

Mark Atkinson, director general of the Royal British Legion, said: “This integration of governance

opens the next chapter in its history, placing the Royal British Legion National Remembrance Gardens at the heart of our remembrance work. This strengthens our ability to invest in the long term future of the site, building on its incredible legacy while preserving the character, purpose and sense of welcome that mean so much to those who visit.”

Tackle financial blind spots Wealth management firm Mattioli Woods is inviting Chamber members to a free event uncovering the financial blind spots behind success – with expert insights on leadership, resilience and navigating change.

The event on Tuesday 19 May, at Fazeley Studios in Birmingham (5.30pm to 7.30pm) will also cover the current economic outlook.

Leadership coach Nim Pancholi has been announced as the guest speaker and the event will be hosted by Henry Allen, a wealth management consultant at Mattioli Woods.

Henry said: “Time and again, I meet incredibly successful entrepreneurs who have built exceptional businesses – but whose personal finances haven't kept pace. This event will show you what's possible.

Helen Bates, chief financial officer at Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce, is to retire after nine years in the role.

Helen joined the Chamber in 2017 from Birmingham Hippodrome Theatre, where she was director of finance and resources for nearly 15 years.

Since then, she has been at the forefront of several significant milestones – including the sale of Chamber of Commerce House and the organisation’s subsequent move to 54 Hagley Road.

She is also credited with modernising the company’s financial reporting.

Over the past year, Helen assumed the role of acting managing director, co-leading the organisation alongside deputy CEO Raj Kandola during chief executive Henrietta Brealey’s maternity leave.

‘My successor will be stepping into a rewarding and influential role at a hugely exciting time for the Chamber’ Helen, who officially retires in the autumn, said: “As I prepare to leave my Chamber role, I do so knowing that this will be a fantastic opportunity for someone new.

“My successor will be stepping into a rewarding and influential role at a hugely exciting time for the Chamber, with the chance to make a meaningful contribution to its next chapter.”

Henrietta Brealey said: “Helen joined the Chamber nine years ago and leaves a significantly stronger and more modern organisation as a result of her exceptional stewardship.

“She has been a trusted adviser to me, the senior leadership team and the board, and she will leave very big shoes to fill.

AI helps bring museum to life Thinktank, Birmingham Science Museum, has launched a new AI-powered digital guide to help visitors explore the museum in a more interactive and personalised way.

The guide, Tellme, which is available free of charge, is accessed through a smartphone browser with no download required. Visitors can simply point their phones at exhibits and AI brings them to life.

It recognises what is being viewed and provides engaging facts and stories about the object. Visitors can also ask questions and receive answers in real time using the chat function.

Tellme also introduces optional rewards to encourage exploration to further enhance the visitor experience.

The guide has been developed in collaboration with software development company Tellme, which specialises in reimagining how people experience visitor attractions.

Kingston Myles, director of enterprise and innovation at Birmingham Museums Trust, said: “Early feedback has shown strong uptake and engagement, with visitors responding positively to being able to explore the museum in a more flexible and conversational way.”

Academics join TV star for historic Sky crime series Two academics from the Aston Institute for Forensic Linguistics (AIFL) featured in a new Sky History crime series looking at unsolved murders and miscarriages of justice.

The historical crime series is called Britain’s Murder Map with Vicky McClure and Jonny Owen, and it charts the journey of the married couple travelling across the UK exploring historic, culturally significant crimes that have changed the face of modern Britain.

‘The case of Timothy Evans is incredibly significant because the details surrounding the confession, gave rise to forensic linguistics all those years ago’ Speaking to experts, historians, police officers and victims’ families, the series examines the lasting impact each murder has left on the community and why these cases still resonate today.

Professor Tim Grant and Dr Nicci MacLeod from Aston University featured in the episode called “10 Rillington Place”.

The episode explores the case of British serial killer John Christie, who committed many of his crimes in his London house, and the

miscarriage of justice involving his neighbour Timothy Evans. This programme takes an in-depth look at Evans who, on 9 March 1950, was hanged after confessing to the murder of his wife, Beryl, and baby daughter, Geraldine.

However, 18 years after Evans’ death, linguist Jan Svartvik authored a publication calling the validity of Evans’ confession into question, and in doing so, coined the term ‘forensic linguistics’ – now an established academic discipline whose global hub is based at Aston University.

Professor Grant said: “It was a pleasure to be involved in the new

series with Vicky and Jonny, and the case of Timothy Evans is incredibly significant because the details surrounding the confession, gave rise to forensic linguistics all those years ago.”

Dr MacLeod said: “This case remains one of the most notorious in British history for being a clear miscarriage of justice with a tragic ending.”

He said he was sure viewers could “see how this case unravelled, and how an understanding of language can be a crucial addition to the toolkit in terms of delivering justice – even when that justice is hugely delayed”.

Business leader ‘honoured’ by role Carmen Watson has been declared High Sheriff of the County of the West Midlands during a ceremonial sitting at the Queen Elizabeth Law Courts in Birmingham.

The declaration marks the beginning of Carmen’s tenure as one of the oldest secular offices in the United Kingdom, representing the Crown’s interests in relation to the administration of justice across the county.

Carmen, from Wolverhampton, is widely recognised as one of the West Midlands’ most influential business leaders.

She has spent her entire career with Pertemps Network Group, joining the organisation in the 1970s and rising from an entry-level role to chair of the UK’s largest independently owned recruitment business.

In addition to her business leadership, Carmen has long been active in civic and charitable roles across the region.

She has served as a Deputy Lieutenant for the West Midlands since 2023 and has held advisory and leadership positions supporting skills development, equality of opportunity and regional economic growth.

She is also vice-president of Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce.

Carmen said: “I am deeply honoured to take on the role of High Sheriff of the West Midlands. I look forward to supporting the judiciary, emergency services and voluntary organisations across our county, and to continuing to champion opportunity, inclusion and community cohesion throughout my year in office.”

President’s Focus Gary Phelps, president of Royal Sutton Coldfield Chamber of Commerce and managing director of Gary Phelps Communications, looks at how vital it is to ensure that smaller high-streets can be helped to thrive alongside the larger centres.

L

et me play devil's advocate – do we focus too much on our large town centres and city centre high-streets?

These areas are hugely important. People care passionately about them.

In many ways, they provide a visual barometer of how a place is performing and, sitting at the centre of our transport networks, are the first thing that visitors see.

They represent the civic heart of our communities.

And, with all the pressure placed on the modern High Street, these central areas understandably get a great deal of attention.

Sutton Coldfield Town Centre is the second biggest shopping area in Birmingham and local people really want to see it succeed.

There is a huge amount of effort going into re-shaping it, led by a detailed regeneration masterplan drawn by the town council. Millions of pounds of government cash have been earmarked for a revamp of transport links.

It's also served by an ambitious and dynamic Business Improvement District – the Visit Royal Sutton Coldfield BID – which regularly organises events to drive footfall and attract attention, from farmers markets to business talks by stars from Dragon’s Den. What's more, the Gracechurch Centre, which represents the lion’s share of the town centre, is now 10 CHAMBERLINK May 2026

owned by Birmingham company BPG, who seem more attuned to local wishes than previous owners.

They scored a major coup in attracting Australian retailer Harvey Norman to open their UK HQ in our town recently.

And there is big money going into significant town centre public buildings – the Town Hall, the Cottage Hospital – alongside businesses such as Rudy’s Pizza and Wagamama choosing to open here.

As president of the Royal Sutton Coldfield Chamber, I sit on the Sutton Coldfield Town Centre

Regeneration Partnership, which brings together all kinds of agencies and groups to ensure joined-up thinking and better delivery.

So, while there is much still to do, all this work is paying dividends.

This effort to support town centres is being reflected all across the West Midlands, in places like Solihull, Dudley, Walsall and Leamington Spa, with town centres getting a boost from numerous funding pots, from the Future High Street Fund to cash from the West Midlands Combined Authority.

But here is my point - by focusing on them so much, are we potentially neglecting the smaller high streets in our communities, and the successes they are seeing?

In Sutton Coldfield, smaller suburban centres like Wylde Green, Boldmere, Mere Green and Walmley are bustling.

Business, of course, is never easy...but a visit to any of these smaller high streets reveals vibrant community hubs.

According to the Centre for Cities, smaller, ‘tertiary’ local high streets are outperforming larger centres by benefiting from increased footfall due to remote working and a preference for convenience. While city centres may struggle with high vacancy rates, local high streets and suburban town centres are seeing a resurgence in community-focused retail and hospitality as shoppers work closer to home.

Compared to our major town centres, they are less reliant on national chains, have lower rents and often benefit from being walkable distances from their clientele.

They also tend to have the kind of individual independent businesses – from clothes boutiques to butchers to longstanding local practices like solicitors and accountants – that many would like to see in our major town centres again.

The problem is these areas don't always have a voice.

That's where the Chamber steps up – by representing businesses regardless of where they are based.

So many of our members in Sutton are based in these suburban areas.

The Chamber can work with BIDS and smaller traders' associations to ensure everyone has their say.

We all want our city and larger town centres to succeed, and it's great to see investment pouring into them. They mean a great deal to our communities.

But local commerce is an ecosystem, and the success of a smaller high street is of equal importance to the communities that live around them. The Chamber is there to give them a voice too.

The Griffin Report Edgbaston Priory Club, which boasts the best grass tennis courts outside Wimbledon, will again be attracting world-class players for their Open tournament this month. The club also recently celebrated its 150th anniversary and JON GRIFFIN caught up with club CEO Claire Daniel-Lepore to discuss its enduring world-wide affection.

laire Daniel-Lepore is reflecting with pride on 150 years of starstudded tennis history at one of the region’s true sporting gems. “You know, there’s no better place to be in Birmingham in the sunshine than here, playing on the amazing courts, being in the pool.

“What really resonated with me when I started was this is so much more than a club. It’s a lifestyle – it isn’t just a health club or a racquets club – it’s a way of life. People bring their whole families here for the day or night.”

Edgbaston Priory Club may be a somewhat different sporting arena compared to Villa Park, St Andrew’s or its cricketing neighbour down the road at Edgbaston Stadium but the racquets club, whose origins date back to the Victorian era, has more than earned its place in the UK’s sporting affections.

The roll-call of stars who have battled for court supremacy at the Priory down through the decades reads like an A-Z of tennis royalty, from early legends such as Fred Perry and Dan Maskell to more recent world-class competitors in the shape of Bjorn Borg, Arthur

Ashe, Jimmy Connors, Billie Jean King, Maria Sharapova, Kings Heath’s very own Ann Jones, Martina Navratilova, Venus Williams, Heather Watson and Tim Henman.

In the case of Ann Jones, the future Wimbledon champion began life as a club member at the Priory before winning tennis’s blue riband tournament while squash legend Jonah Barrington also climbed through the ranks at the Birmingham complex.

‘We expect to see around 20,000 spectators over the course of the Open.

A lot of players playing here will go on to Wimbledon’ That legacy of tennis and racquets stardust over the years for the Priory is entirely fitting given that lawn tennis originated in Birmingham back in 1859 when a certain Major Harry Gem and Augurio Perara first marked out a croquet lawn in Ampton Road, Edgbaston, for use as a tennis court.

The Priory is also steeped in sporting history as one of the oldest private tennis and leisure clubs in the UK, recently celebrating its 150th birthday following its foundation in 1875. In 1884 Maud Watson from Solihull won the very first ladies’ Wimbledon title – and the trophy she collected is now awarded to the winner of the Birmingham Open held at the Edgbaston venue.

A galaxy of tennis stars are set to descend on the Priory in June for the latest incarnation of a tournament which began life in 1982, attracting thousands of tennis fans to Birmingham B15 as a prelude to Wimbledon later in the summer.

Priory CEO Claire said: “The Birmingham Lexus Open tournament is the biggest event in our calendar. It changed last year and we had both men and women play and we’ve got men and women playing again this year, which is fantastic.

“It’s the first grass court tournament of the season and a warm-up for Wimbledon – we’ve got the best courts outside of Wimbledon, that’s not personal bias, we see it as a fact.”

This year the Lexus Birmingham Open takes place from 30 May to 7 June, with an array of activities across the nine days of action including a live DJ, Indian dancing,

ballet performances, food and drink stalls, a Pride Day and other highlights.

“We have been working really closely with the LTA from July last year and this year’s tournament is looking to be bigger and better than last year. The grounds team have done an amazing job with the grass courts and we expect to see around 20,000 spectators over the course of the Open. A lot of players playing here will go on to Wimbledon.”

The club also recently celebrated its 150th anniversary with another wide variety of events, including a special ball hosted by Annabel Croft, an exhibition for all members, a family fun day - and a video message from Billie Jean King. “She sent a message for all our members – she has really fond memories of playing here.”

But tennis is not the only game in town at this Birmingham oasis, set in 14 acres of greenery with 23

outdoor courts and eight indoor courts along with ten squash courts. The Priory also boasts facilities for padel and pickleball enthusiasts alongside lifestyle attractions from pools, gym and fitness to a range of club activities including the likes of bridge and gardening.

‘Racquet sports are quite niche, so it’s about making them accessible’ Claire, a sports lover who joined the Priory in May 2025 from Edgbaston Stadium where she spent 15 years in a wide variety of key roles including general manager of catering and operations director, said: “Squash is also really big and important to us. We have the British Junior Open and we have around 6,000 people for that.

“And we’re not just a racquets club – we’re a private members club owned by our members.

We’ve got 3,200 members and about 600 juniors. They are

predominantly from the Midlands, within a 10-mile radius.

“Our average age is 45 – we’ve got a lot of long-standing members who have been here for 50, 60 years, we are really privileged that we have members who care so passionately about the club.

“We’re continuing to invest in our facilities. We’re doing a refurbishment in the bar and bistro – we are really aware that we want to continue to be this private members’ club and to be a destination where people want to come for breakfast, lunch etc.

Families spend quite a bit of time here – it’s a home from home.”

In common with all sporting and leisure organisations in an era when youngsters are increasingly distracted by the often-dubious temptations of 24-7 Internet access, the Priory is keen to attract new generations of tennis and squash lovers.

“We’ve got kids’ camps, primarily focused on racquets, which are full. We have some of the best coaches ensuring that the kids have fun. Like any coaches they have a bigger role than just coaching the sport – it’s about coaching them, leadership, manners, expectations, timekeeping etc. Racquet sports are quite niche, so it’s about making them accessible.”

Claire said investment – both in the club’s infrastructure and facilities and in the racquet stars of new generations – should ensure a bright future for a club formed in 1964 following a merger between the Edgbaston Cricket and Lawn Tennis Club and the Priory Lawn Tennis Club, which both dated back to the 1870s.

“We want to be the best member-led racquets and lifestyle facility. We’ve been here for 150 years - my job is to make sure that we’re stable for the next 150 years.”

Views sought on Iran conflict Business views are being sought on the impact of the Iran conflict – with some firms in Greater Birmingham already reporting significant cost rises.

As businesses face fuel cost increases, freight delays and supply chain disruption as a result of the war, the British Chambers of Commerce has launched a survey to understand the full extent.

Greater Birmingham businesses are being encouraged to have their say on how events in the Middle East are affecting their operations.

The survey also factors in other pressures on business including changes to employment rights and increases to the National Living Wage.

‘Higher costs for businesses, compounded by cumulative pressures on employment costs, and increased bills for households, will harm the UK economy’ Emily Stubbs, head of policy at Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce (GBCC), said: “Weeks of disruption to shipping and supply chains, and lasting damaged sustained by energy infrastructure in the Middle East mean that supplies of oil and gas will remain affected for some time.

“Whilst the UK gets a relatively small proportion of its oil and gas from the Middle East, as a net energy importer, the UK is vulnerable to global energy shocks.

“Anecdotally, some Greater Birmingham businesses are already reporting rapidly rising weekly fuel costs, freight delays of goods by plane and boat due to reroutes of cargo, and significant increases in carriage costs for goods that are shipped, and many report limited

ability to absorb these price increases.

“Meanwhile, the conflict has also severely disrupted global fertiliser supplies, causing prices of key nutrients to spike significantly, threatening global food security and significant increases to food price inflation longer-term.

“Ultimately, higher costs for businesses, compounded by cumulative pressures on employment costs, and increased bills for households, will harm the UK economy.”

Edgbaston-based restaurant Chapter said the war in Iran made things “worse overnight” for the already beleaguered hospitality industry.

Co-owner Ann Tonks said: “Back in February, it would have been hard to imagine what could be worse for our bottom line than the impending increases to the National Minimum Wage, business rates and daily standing charges for electricity, coupled with the new employment laws – all imposed by a government who are supposedly concerned about the cost of living.

“But it got worse overnight with the disastrous war in the Middle East instigated by the American president. The war in the Middle East has a direct effect on our food and beverage purchase costs.

“It’s obvious that fuel prices add to delivery costs which are passed on to us as a business.

“But the effect on global supply chains is also significant, leading to increased freight costs and delays in international produce.

“While Chapter buys 90 per cent of our produce from Britain, our home grown produce naturally rises as well, as demand for more readily available crops and livestock leads to price increases and issues of availability.

Costs of agri products such as fertilizer have jumped, leading to price pressure on daily home grown produce. And of course, in a business based on food production, weather shocks are always there ready to upset normal business – we don’t need additional trauma created by choice from politicians.”

The survey takes around 10 minutes to complete, with the results being fed directly to key stakeholders such as the Government and the Bank of England.

...as economy shows growth before war The UK economy experienced its biggest increase in more than two years in the three months to February - with a 0.5 per cent growth rate recorded.

According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), services and production outputs grew by 0.5 per cent, and construction grew by 1.0 per cent in February 2026.

However, the figures cover a period before the outbreak of the Middle Eastern conflict.

Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce senior policy advisor Ruth Fleet (pictured) said: “February’s unexpectedly positive GDP report shows that UK businesses are driving growth in the economy where they can, but this data predates the US-Iran conflict and the impact that this has had on global energy prices, the consequences of which will begin to be reflected in the March data.”

New partnership to empower Black students

Birmingham City University (BCU) is backing a bold new national partnership to help develop a community for Black university students.

BCU, the National Union of Students (NUS) and the African and Caribbean Students Network (ACSN) have announced the creation of the National AfricanCaribbean Society (ACS) Alliance, bringing together student leaders and institutions to drive sector-wide change.

The Alliance will be formally launched at the first National ACS Conference, hosted at BCU’s Curzon Building on 28–29 May. The conference will focus on student leadership, tackling institutional racism and strengthening networks across African and Caribbean societies nationwide.

Birmingham has been selected as the host city due to its young and diverse population, with 12.9 per cent of under-16s identifying as Black or Black British.

Dr Melanie-Marie Haywood, dean of students at BCU, said: “The National ACS Alliance is first and foremost about building community.

“By working in partnership with the NUS and the ACS Network, we are creating the first national space where Black, African and Caribbean heritage students can connect, organise, and learn from one another.

“This is a celebratory moment because it affirms the role ACSs have always played in nurturing identity, confidence and leadership, and it marks a step forward in building a sector where Black students are supported not in isolation, but together.”

Over £38,000 made for charity

by Chamber’s ex-president...

More than £38,000 has been handed over to blood cancer charity Cure Leukaemia following a two-year fundraising drive led by past Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce (GBCC) president Nasir Awan.

Nasir chose Birminghamheadquartered Cure Leukaemia as the President’s Charity for his twoyear term, which ran from 2023-25.

A total of £38,800 was raised through several initiatives including silent auctions at the Chamber’s 2024 and 2025 awards dinners.

‘A big thanks to Nasir and everybody at the Chamber for a fantastic partnership over the past couple of years supporting Cure Leukaemia’ Nasir was also instrumental in supporting a 1,000-mile Birmingham to Majorca bike ride in 2024 – a challenge undertaken by South & City College Birmingham principal Mike Hopkins.

Mike and four team-mates began the nine-day challenge from the GBCC’s 54 Hagley Road

headquarters, with Nasir joining them for the first section in Birmingham.

James McLaughlin, chief executive of Cure Leukaemia, said: “A big thanks to Nasir and everybody at the Chamber for a fantastic partnership over the past couple of years supporting Cure Leukaemia.

“This money goes towards the funding of a research nurse at the QE. I’m delighted that we’ll soon be announcing some world-first trials that will be taking place in Birmingham.”

Nasir said: “I chose Cure Leukaemia as my charity because it’s an organisation that started in Birmingham and is now helping people all over the world.”

...and Andy to support Sport 4 Life A Birmingham charity that uses the power of sport to help young people reach their potential has been named as Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce (GBCC) president Andy Dawson’s chosen charity.

Sport 4 Life UK supports disadvantaged young people by providing the skills, qualifications and support needed to find work and shape successful futures.

The charity provides a holistic programme of sport, mentoring, qualifications and employability support to improve their mental health and wellbeing, life skills and route to end unemployment.

The project was started by founder and CEO Tom Clarke-Forrest with no staff or funding and has grown to become the leading sport-for-employability organisation in the region.

Tom was awarded an MBE for services to young people in the New Year Honours list.

He said: “We’re incredibly proud that Sport 4 Life UK has been chosen as the GBCC President’s Charity for 2026.

“As a charity with deep roots in Birmingham and a strong commitment to supporting young people across the region, this partnership feels especially meaningful to us.”

Sport 4 Life UK will benefit from Chamber-backed initiatives including fundraising at the annual awards dinner at the ICC on Thursday 14 May. Andy Dawson said: “It is the responsibility of any leader to create opportunity for their people. However,

Strong relations drive growth Creative and digital agencies risk limiting long-term growth by treating client relationships as transactional rather than strategic, according to a discussion between Chamber members.

The insight emerged during a meeting between Liz Ashton, founder of Symbioss, and Andrew Milton of rbl, facilitated through the Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce (GBCC).

The conversation followed a chance encounter at a recent Chamber event, where the pair reconnected after previously working together several years ago, when Ashton commissioned rbl to deliver rebranding work in a former role. They highlighted that while creative agencies often excel in delivering high-quality work, many lack structured frameworks to manage and sustain long-term client relationships.

‘Taking a more systematic approach can help strengthen client partnerships’ The discussion focused on the challenges faced by creative businesses, where client relationships can become transactional rather than strategically managed.

Andrew, who recently relocated rbl to new premises in Leamington Spa, said agencies are under increasing pressure to retain clients in a competitive market.

He said: “Many agencies are strong on delivery, but often lack the structured frameworks needed to manage long-term client relationships effectively.

“Taking a more systematic approach can help strengthen client partnerships and improve retention over time.”

Liz, founder of Symbioss, said the discussion highlighted the value of peer insight through the Chamber network.

She said: “It was valuable to reconnect with Andrew and hear his perspective on the creative sector.

“His insights reinforced the challenges many agencies face when managing client relationships.”

Devolution must deliver real benefit

By Feron Jayawardene Business leaders and MPs from Staffordshire have made a rallying cry for a coordinated county-wide approach to maximise the opportunities presented by devolution.

The call was made during the launch of the Staffordshire Gateway Growth Panel report at The Hub at St Mary’s in Lichfield, which was attended by over 60 delegates.

The report unveiled 17 policy recommendations designed to ensure the county’s transition to a devolved Strategic Authority delivers real benefits for local firms.

Ruth Fleet, Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce (GBCC) senior policy advisor, explained the project goal was to identify the opportunities for growth in Staffordshire.

Emily Stubbs, head of policy at the GBCC, led a discussion with Josh Newbury, Labour MP for Cannock Chase and Dave Robertson, Labour MP for Lichfield.

It focused around understanding business priorities in Staffordshire.

They also stressed the importance of skills and transport developments needed in the long

run through further devolution of powers and funding to a new strategic authority.

Jonathan Roberts, CFO of M6toll and chair of the Staffordshire Gateway Growth Panel, led a business panel discussion with Amrit Virk, from Burton and South Derbyshire College, Tony Price,

from Trent & Dove Housing, and Fiona Rouse from Pi-Kem. Tony Price stressed the need for a county wide infrastructure strategy while Amrit Virk raised the importance of greater collaboration between FE and independent training providers with businesses to fix the skills gap in the region.

For many UK businesses, hiring international talent is no longer optional—it is essential. Yet too often, immigration compliance is treated as a tick-box exercise rather than a core part of business operations.

The reality is straightforward: getting it wrong can be costly.

Across the Midlands, there has been a noticeable rise in businesses—particularly SMEs—facing immigration compliance issues. In most cases, these are not deliberate breaches, but the result of navigating a system that has become increasingly complex.

The consequences, however, remain significant.

Civil penalties for illegal working can reach up to £60,000 per breach. Beyond financial impact, organisations risk reputational damage, disruption to operations, and the loss of a sponsor licence.

So where are employers going wrong?

One of the most common issues is non-compliant right to work checks. This extends beyond simply copying a passport—employers must follow prescribed processes, verify validity, and retain records in line with Home Office requirements.

Another recurring challenge is the lack of internal monitoring.

Visa expiry dates, changes in employment conditions, and reporting duties are often overlooked without proper systems in place.

There is also a tendency to underestimate the importance of training. Immigration responsibilities are frequently delegated to HR or recruitment teams without the necessary guidance or oversight, increasing the risk of error.

What becomes clear is that immigration compliance is not just a legal obligation—it is an operational responsibility.

Businesses that approach it with structure and consistency are far better positioned to avoid risk.

In a business environment where access to global talent is increasingly important, immigration should be viewed not as a burden, but as part of a wider growth strategy.

When handled properly, it enables businesses to expand with confidence. When overlooked, it can expose even the most established organisations to unnecessary risk.

Fiona Rouse said: “Over 95 per cent of Staffordshire businesses are SMEs, and they form the backbone of our local economy.

“To support their growth, we need to ensure there is a range of business premises that truly meet their needs, backed by strong support structures.”

Unsung Hero award for first manager of Black Sabbath This year’s “Unsung Hero” trophy in the UK Blues Awards has been presented to Jim Simpson, the first manager of Black Sabbath and Birmingham Jazz Festival legend.

Jim managed Ozzy Osbourne and Tony Iommi’s original Blues band called Earth in 1969, relaunching them as Black Sabbath as they moved into heavy metal, and arranging the release of their legendary albums Black Sabbath and Paranoid in 1970.

He lost control of Black Sabbath shortly afterwards, but more than 55 years later Simpson is still ubiquitous on the Midlands’ music

scene with his Big Bear Music company.

The awards were hosted in Milton Keynes by Paul Jones, the former Manfred Mann singer and presenter of The Blues Show on BBC Radio 2 for three decades.

Paul said: “The first of our special awards pays tribute to those who tirelessly work behind the scenes, out of the spotlight: promoting, encouraging, supporting and nurturing blues music in the UK over a prolonged period.

“This year’s Unsung Hero award goes to the founder of Big Bear

Records and the director of Birmingham Jazz & Blues Festival.”

Paul told the audience how Jim, working as a photographer at what was then the Birmingham College of Advanced Technology, now renamed Aston University, formed The New Magnolia Jazz Band, opening for the likes of Humphrey Lyttelton and Kenny Ball.

Jim opened his club Henry’s Blueshouse in Birmingham in 1968, where early members included John Osbourne and Anthony Iommi.

B:Music unveils sizzling summer programme

B:Music, the Birmingham-based music charity behind Symphony Hall and Town Hall, has unveiled its Summer 2026 programme, bringing a vibrant mix of comedy, live music, dance and spoken word to its two iconic venues.

The new season features a wide-ranging line-up across both stages. From May to July, the venues will welcome an exciting line-up of performers including Elvis Costello & The Imposters, Jethro Tull, Ray LaMontagne, David Sedaris, Kate Rusby, Cowboy Junkies, and Paul Carrack.

Making one of only a handful of UK appearances, Max Cooper brings his latest album Feeling Is Structure to Symphony Hall, alongside highlights from his acclaimed catalogue and new material (18 May).

Birmingham Royal Ballet (BRB) is set to mark 100 years of founding director laureate Sir Peter Wright with a special gala performance.

The internationally renowned touring ballet company was first established in Birmingham by Sir Peter Wright in 1990, transferring the company to the city after formerly being known as Sadler’s Wells Royal Ballet.

The special gala performance at Birmingham Hippodrome on Thursday, 18 June, will begin with a défilé (formal presentation) by members of Elmhurst Ballet School. The BRB will then present highlights from some of Sir Peter’s most cherished productions.

At Sir Peter’s request, the evening will conclude with one of his favourite pieces, Kurt Jooss’s 1932 ballet, The Green Table. BRB’s director, Carlos Acosta, will dance the role of Death in The Green Table.

Carlos said: “There are no words to explain the scale of Sir Peter’s contribution to the heritage, history and legacy of not only BRB, but the art form as a whole.”

Our role is to build strong relationships with Chamber members across all divisions, helping them to understand how membership opportunities can work for them and how to best use them.

Our eight strong team works with approximately 1,400 members. We have three strategic relationship managers in Alicia Nelson, Jane Jackson and Jim Bourne. They’re responsible for our top tier 1813 Club and Premier members.

Supporting the majority of our members dayto-day are Hamish Kelly, Kiran Jagdev, Charlotte Goulbourn and Henry Wilkinson, who look after standard and start-up memberships.

Gary, Jim, Jane, and Henry are huge Aston Villa fans. Jane, a singer in her early days, has danced with Tom Jones in the 1960s.

Kiran has been with the Chamber since 1998 taking on many roles while Charlotte has lived in Dubai for seven years. Hamish is a proud owner of a marine aquarium and Alicia has sung for an audience of 3000 people.

Housing association dials up connectivity Urgent need: Professor Gino Martini

Major funding for cleanrooms The University of Birmingham’s Precision Health Technologies Accelerator (PHTA) has secured government funding to develop three new commercial cleanrooms, boosting the region’s capacity to manufacture advanced therapies.

The funding has been unlocked by the Life Sciences Innovative Manufacturing Fund (LSIMF) and will contribute to the development and staffing of a new £10.7m, 5,000 sq ft facility equipped to GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) standards.

Pharmaceutical researchers and enterprises will soon be able to make advanced therapeutics such as mRNA vaccines for cancer using the new facilities.

Cleanrooms are sterile environments designed to minimise contamination by tightly controlling airborne particles, temperature and other key environmental factors.

Professor Gino Martini, chief executive officer at PHTA, said: “The UK, and particularly the West Midlands, urgently needs GMP cleanroom facilities to support the production of ATMPs and vaccines, as well as medicines for clinical trials.

“This new investment will allow us to achieve our pointof-care manufacturing ambitions. Having these facilities in place will also build resilience into the NHS, ensuring future pandemic preparedness.”

Birmingham-based Intercity has signed a deal to support the mobile connectivity requirements of one of the West Midlands’ largest housing associations.

The managed IT and communications provider is delivering a network-agnostic mobile services solution that will boost connectivity, visibility and day-to-day management of whg’s 300 strong-mobile estate.

Designed around local coverage requirements rather than a generic national approach, the new partnership provides different

user needs while maintaining a single service, support and management model.

The deal also includes access to Intercity’s mobile services portal.

Exemplary rating in social work provision University College Birmingham’s Department of Social Work has received an exemplary rating from Social Work England.

Courses have been given a “recommendation for approval with no conditions and no recommendations”.

Comprising two courses, Social Work England inspectors highlighted the strength of the department’s relational culture, noting the exceptional integration of student, staff and Expert by Experience (EbE) partnerships, alongside the implementation of innovative assessment strategies.

Dr Gemma Hunt, head of social work – School of Health, Life Sciences and Education, said: “It was a very proud moment to hear that the inspectors had recommended approval of both courses, with no conditions and no recommendations.”

Dr Hunt was singled out by the employer partners for her leadership and commitment which were described as “a force of nature”.

JLR sales recover after catastrophic cyber incident Jaguar Land Rover achieved a “significant” sales increase during the fourth quarter, as operations recovered and production returned to normal levels following the cyber incident.

The figures reveal a major spike compared with the previous quarters with wholesale volumes increasing to 61.1 per cent compared to Q3 FY26, reflecting a return to normal production levels following the cyber incident.

Compared to the prior year, wholesale volumes for the fourth quarter were down in all markets, aside from Europe, which was up 4.1 per cent. Volumes were lower in the UK (23.1 per cent), North America (19.0 per cent), China (29.8 per cent), Overseas (7.9 per cent) and MENA (2.4 per cent).

Wholesale volumes for FY26 were 307,900 units, down 23.2 per cent versus FY25.

The overall mix of Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and Defender models was 77.1 per cent of

total wholesale volumes in Q4 FY26, up from 66.3 per cent in Q4 FY25 and up from 74.3 per cent in the prior quarter.

For the full year, the mix of the same models was 76.5 per cent, up from 67.8 per cent the previous year.

Retail sales for the fourth quarter of 92,700 units (including CJLR) were down 14.3 per cent year on year but up 16.2 per cent compared to Q3 FY26.

JLR was due to report its fourth quarter and full year results for the period ended 31 March 2026 this month.

Focus on death: Part of the exhibition

Exhibition explores life and death A community exhibition on the themes of death, dying and grief has opened at Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery.

On display until the end of June, the exhibition is part of local collective BrumYODO’s annual festival A Matter of Life and Death and national Dying Matters Awareness Week.

BrumYODO is a community interest company made up of artists, undertakers, food artists, hospices, palliative care professionals and others.

A Matter of Life and Death aims to promote healthy and productive conversations about death and dying.

The exhibition looks at rituals and traditions surrounding death and mourning and invites

visitors to consider the topic of how artificial intelligence (AI) can be used to manage grief.

Led by artist Bianca Beneduzi from ITZATNA Arts, these creative sessions blend dance

Artist Jemma Mellor will be leading a grief and clay workshop on Friday, 15 May, during which participants can decorate a small clay token to remember someone who has passed away.

Affordable website service launched Solihull-based web development agency Jask Creative has launched a new service designed to offer faster turnaround times and a lower overall cost for clients.

Following the recruitment of another experienced developer and a leading UX specialist during 2025, Jask’s team undertook a six-month R&D project to develop an offering that retains many of the benefits of its premium WordPress development service WP Plus, while also making the best use of AI-powered tools and in-house component libraries.

Rather than replacing creativity or expertise, Jask is using in-house developed, privately run AI assisted technologies to create an increasing level of efficiencies.

Rep Studio 8 welcomes first participants Birmingham Rep have revealed the eight young people who will be the first participants in its new acting training programme, Rep Studio 8.

This intensive programme offers eight Midlands-based actors training and experience to build sustainable careers in the theatre industry.

The 2026 Rep Studio 8 cohort includes: Maisie Britton, Reece Cameron Fielding, Victor A Daniels, Lerissa Doré, Samuel Gold Akanbi, Quennie Lim, Loretta Thompson and Kevvauna Welsh.

Participants will benefit from hands-on workshops, masterclasses with leading industry professionals, and performance opportunities, including performing in The Red Shoes as part of the Rep Rising summer festival and Twelfth Night as part of a Theatre in Education (TiE) tour.

PKF Smith Cooper leads sale of European storage site Birmingham-based PKF Smith Cooper acted as lead advisers as Flexistockage (Paris), the largest independent single-site self-storage operator in Europe, were acquired by Pithos Capital and PGIM Real Estate, through their Zebrabox France joint venture.

The corporate finance team at PKF worked with shareholders of Lynco SARL and Multibox SNC (trading as Flexistockage), delivering comprehensive support throughout the sale process.

This included identifying potential purchasers, compiling trading data to articulate business performance, discreetly marketing the business to a targeted shortlist, negotiating terms, managing the transaction through to completion and collaborating with various advisors and professionals across several jurisdictions including

France, Ireland, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

Strong interest was generated, with Pithos Capital and PGIM Real Estate ultimately selected as the preferred acquirer.

Museum secures grant to re-open two gallery spaces A grant of £183,000 has been awarded to Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery to bring more of the city’s diverse collections back on public display.

The grant funding will enable essential physical improvements in two galleries, allowing these spaces to be reopened to increase access to the city’s global majority and contemporary arts collections and to be used flexibly for future exhibitions and programming.

The award is from the DCMS/Wolfson Museums and Galleries Improvement Fund.

The project forms part of Birmingham Museums Trust’s wider strategy to improve access to its collections, enhance visitor experience and ensure its buildings and galleries can respond to future needs.

The redevelopment of these galleries marks a further step forward for the reopening of Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery, which closed in 2020 for essential repairs before the start of a

phased reopening in October 2024. Many areas of the museum are still closed as the trust works on planning and fundraising towards a major redevelopment project.

Vaisakhi celebrates united communities The Asian Business Chamber of Commerce celebrated Vaisakhi by bringing businesses together to explore how cultural diversity can foster stronger communities.

Vaisakhi celebrates the Sikh community’s harvest festival honouring the work of farmers and paying tribute to God for food and future prosperity.

The event took place at the National Conference Centre with over 50 delegates attending.

ABCC president Monica Ghai welcomed the delegates and spoke about the importance Vaisakhi brings to the Asian business community.

An expert panel discussed how cultural understanding and shared traditions can foster stronger and cohesive communities.

4 Real Clothing, a streetwear brand founded in Birmingham, will bring their latest designs to the outlet on 8, 9, and 10 May. The brand was founded in 2021 by Theodore Grant with an aim to provide fashionable and comfortable clothing for everyone while striving to produce premium quality streetwear.

Theodore said: “I first created 4 Real Clothing while I was on my lunch break at work. It all started with a simple sketch on a piece of paper.

“I spent the rest of the day writing down ideas and drawing out logos that would fit with this new idea.

“When I got home, I started to create logos in the middle of the night and came up with the first logo concept.

“I spent the next few months doing research on fashion and understanding different types of garment quality and made my first collection in July 2021.

Ale trail comes to life thanks to local artist A new ale trail celebrating Lichfield’s rich heritage and vibrant pub culture has been launched through a collaboration between local artist Jackie Roberts and historian Jono Oates.

Jackie, founder of Love2dream and a member of the Lichfield and Tamworth Chamber of Commerce, partnered with Jono to help bring his idea to life.

The initiative showcases 16 of Lichfield’s pubs, many of which are located in historic buildings across the city.

Jono is a well-known figure in Lichfield and a regular in many of the pubs.

He combined his passion for the historic city with his love of pubs to launch the trail and to produce the maps, which he funded himself.

The ale trail map features Jackie’s distinctive black and white line drawings, including illustrations of each pub as well as Lichfield Cathedral.

Jackie said: “I was so excited when Jono approached me to ask if he could use my drawings of the pubs on his ale trail map.

“It’s a great opportunity for me to showcase my drawings to locals, as well as visitors exploring the city.”

The trail is divided into two routes - the Garrick Trail and the Johnson Trail - each highlighting eight pubs and guiding participants through different areas of Lichfield.

Grant scheme to boost Lichfield shopfronts Lichfield District Council’s Cabinet has backed the development of a new grant scheme to support businesses in restoring and enhancing historic shopfronts across the city centre.

The scheme will provide funding to support businesses in improving the appearance and quality of shopfronts, helping to protect Lichfield’s historic character while supporting a thriving local economy.

Funding for the programme has already been allocated through the council’s capital investment programme, with £900,000 set aside to support improvements over the next two years.

Councillor Richard Holland, cabinet member for high street and economic development, said: “Lichfield’s city centre is one of our greatest strengths, but we know some shopfronts no longer reflect the character we’re proud of.

Solihull’s strengths revealed in snapshot The Solihull Economic snapshot launch, organised by Solihull Chamber of Commerce, revealed the borough’s strengths in AI and technology.

Business leaders and council representatives shared views at Cranmore Park on the report findings which showed that Solihull’s employment rate of 77 per cent is above both the West Midlands and UK averages while unemployment remains low at 3.2 per cent.

The report also reveals that the borough has one of the most skilled workforces in the West Midlands, with 43.1 per cent of residents holding a Level 4+ qualification, a considerably stronger profile than the wider region.

The launch was chaired by Solihull Chamber president Emma-Louise Hewitt and the report was sponsored by Prime Accountants Group.

The main findings of the report were presented

by Paige Bowyer, policy and research analyst at Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce.

She said: “The borough’s employment and qualification levels are significantly above both regional and national averages, which is a strong signal for the local economy.

“Continued investment in digital infrastructure and innovation – including developments such as UK Central and the Telecoms Lab – highlights Solihull’s growing strength in AI and emerging technologies.”

Kevin Johns stressed that business confidence was cautiously optimistic in the region with a range of factors affecting long term growth.

He said: “This is the only independent report of its kind for the borough, and it should be used to challenge and inform key stakeholders.”

Nadia Johnstone-Smith, financial planner at Partners Wealth Management, is living with a rare degenerative muscle wasting disease and is a volunteer advocate for the Birmingham Disability Festival.

Nadia is also a Society of Later Life adviser and is a Court of Protection West Midlands committee member.

The National Diversity Awards are the UK’s most prestigious diversity event and celebrate the excellent achievements of grass-root communities that tackle the issues in today’s society, providing them with recognition for their dedication and hard work.

Nadia said: “I feel so honoured to be recognised as a nominee as a positive disabled role model. I hope that by sharing my journey and Encouraging others: career while living with a disability I can encourage others.”

Accessible approach: Will Crawford and Aysha Bateman

Making mindfulness more accessible A Future Faces vice-president has partnered with the West Midlands Combined Authority Young Professionals Network (YPN).

Will Crawford, founder of quietnote, delivered a workshop for the network called proactive techniques for your mental wellbeing as a young professional.

The workshop focused on making mindfulness accessible and practical, building tools and techniques that continue to strengthen your mindset and balancing your wellbeing and your professional goals.

The group discussed the definition of mindfulness and the process of building a heathier mind and lifestyle.

They then looked at two practical meditations that help the individual to be more in tune and aware of their thoughts and talked about the importance of sustained practice.

Aysha Bateman, programme support officer, said: "At the WMCA Young Professionals Network we are always looking at supporting our members as whole people not just employees.

Celebrating South Asian heritage A new event celebrating the proud and diverse heritage of South Asia has been announced by the Asian Business Chamber of Commerce.

The first of its kind event will bring together culture, conversation, and community to explore the richness and diversity of South Asian identities under the theme ‘Unity in Diversity’.

It will take place on 16 July at Birmingham Botanical Gardens from 5.30 to 8.30pm. As part of the celebrations, ABCC is inviting businesses to exhibit and showcase their products and services as part of a cultural bazaar. Speakers will be announced soon.

South Asia is one of the most culturally rich and diverse regions in the world, encompassing India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Afghanistan, each shaped by centuries of history, migration and exchange.

The region is home to a wide range of traditions, religions, cuisines, art forms and celebrations, as well as hundreds of languages and dialects, including Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi, Bengali, Tamil, Gujarati and Sinhala.

Unlocking

potential: The case for inclusive pathways in the West Midlands

omething is quietly unfolding across the West Midlands, and not enough people are talking about it.

Thousands of young people are falling through the gaps of a system that was never really built for them. Many have Special Educational Needs. Many are classified as NEET – Not in Education, Employment or Training.

And the numbers are stark.

Nearly one in five children in England now has some form of special educational need. The number of pupils with an Education, Health and Care Plan has more than doubled since 2016.

Nationally, close to a million young people aged 16 to 24 are currently NEET, around 12.8% of that entire age group. The Public Accounts Committee has described the SEN system as “reaching, or arguably has already reached, crisis point.” Here in the West Midlands, Dudley recorded one of the highest NEET rates in the country, with over a fifth of 16 and 17 year olds not in education or employment.

But behind every statistic is a young person with real potential, waiting for the right environment and the right support.

The real barrier isn't ability Traditional education simply wasn't designed for these individuals. A standardised classroom, rigid outcomes and a one size fits all approach can quickly become a barrier for someone whose strengths lie elsewhere. What actually 42 CHAMBERLINK May 2026

works is provision that meets young people where they are: practical, contextualised and connected to the real world.

When learning is tied to something tangible – a trade, a live project, a genuine route into work – something shifts. Young people who had been written off start to engage. Confidence builds.

Skills develop. And for the first time, many begin to see a future for themselves.

The West Midlands is perfectly placed to lead this Construction, property, hospitality, digital services — these sectors are growing across our region, and they need talent. The opportunity is right in front of us. The question is whether businesses, educators and investors are willing to connect the dots between the young people who need opportunity and the industries that need people.

• No single organisation can achieve this alone. It requires genuine collaboration: Businesses can offer placements, mentorship and real-world exposure that transforms a young person’s trajectory.

• Regeneration projects can create spaces that serve learning as well as commerce, embedding inclusive provision into the fabric of new developments.

• Investors and financial stakeholders can back models that prioritise long-term outcomes, recognising that inclusive provision isn't charity – it's a smart, strategic investment.

The government’s Youth Guarantee, backed by over £1.5bn, signals that political will exists. But it is the private and community sectors that will determine whether that ambition reaches the young people who need it most.

What's actually missing There are already brilliant examples of this work happening across the region. The problem isn't willingness. It’s cohesion.

What's needed is a connected ecosystem where a young person can move from specialist support into skills development, and from there into sustainable employment or enterprise, without falling through the cracks at every transition. Supporting a young person into meaningful work reduces long-term pressure on public services, strengthens workforce participation and builds more resilient local economies.

That blueprint is within reach. But it starts with the right people — business leaders, educators, investors and community makers — asking the same question together: what can we do collectively that none of us can do alone?

Because these young people are not a problem to manage. They are skilled professionals, business owners and community contributors in the making. The West Midlands is on a journey. The only question is whether we build it with everyone – or leave some behind.

Rethinking workplace

wellbeing

A

cross the UK, businesses are grappling with rising levels of disengagement, burnout and absence – all of which come at a significant cost.

The UK continues to face a welldocumented productivity “puzzle”.

Since the financial crisis, productivity growth has remained largely flat, lagging behind other G7 economies.

For business leaders, this raises the question of how to create the conditions for people to perform at their best.

At a macro level, around 2.8 million people are currently out of work due to ill health, costing the UK economy approximately £212bn a year (around seven per cent of GDP).

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) estimates that 148.9 million working days were lost due to sickness or injury in 2024, with mental health conditions – including stress, depression and anxiety – accounting for 9.8 per cent of all days lost.

For organisations, this translates into increased pressure on teams, reduced productivity and the ongoing cost of replacing and training talent. For individuals, it can impact earnings, quality of life and long-term opportunity.

Despite this, many organisations still take a largely reactive approach to wellbeing, with provision primarily

designed to respond to issues once they have escalated.

Employee Assistance Programmes (EAPs), while valuable, are typically accessed when an individual is at the point of crisis, providing access to clinical care such as therapists and counsellors. By that stage, the impact on performance, engagement and cost – to both the individual and the organisation – may already have been felt.

While EAPs undoubtedly have a place, there is growing recognition that wellbeing provision should be more heavily weighted towards prevention. It should be embedded within an organisation’s strategy – not treated as a standalone or oneoff initiative – and recognised as a core contributor to performance. A preventative approach focused on building capability, resilience and self-awareness early offers organisations a way to reduce risk while improving outcomes for both the company and its employees.

This is where professional coaching can play a critical role.

Coaching can support individuals, teams and leaders before challenges become entrenched. It helps people better understand how they show up at work, enables leaders to make better decisions under pressure and strengthens how teams communicate and collaborate.

Done effectively, it can also provide practical tools to manage stress, maintain focus and sustain performance over time.

Research suggests coaching can deliver returns of around seven times the initial investment, while improving performance in over 70 per cent of employees, with broader benefits including improved retention. In commercial terms, this makes it one of the most effective ways to invest in people –not just in terms of development, but in reducing the costs associated with absence, attrition and underperformance.

In contrast, surface-level or “tickbox” wellbeing initiatives, however well intentioned, rarely deliver meaningful or lasting change.

Benefits such as gym memberships, wellness days or ad-hoc activities can be valuable, but when they are not embedded into the wider strategy or long-term culture of an organisation, they often fail to sustainably influence behaviour, culture or performance.

However, there is a growing movement towards combining workplace coaching with evidence-

based wellbeing practices that support nervous system regulation, such as breathwork. The benefits of breathwork can help individuals move out of a heightened state of stress and into one that supports clearer thinking, better decisionmaking and more measured responses. At its core, breathwork creates a pause between stimulus and response, enabling more considered, intentional action.

The impact is felt not only at an individual level, but across the organisation. Stronger leadership, more resilient teams, and improved communication contribute to healthier workplace cultures, and ultimately, more effective and productive businesses.

Against this backdrop, the case for a more preventative approach becomes increasingly clear.

For many organisations, the shift required is not necessarily a significant increase in investment, but a reallocation of focus from reacting to problems once they arise, to building the conditions that help prevent them in the first place.

build your

Building a brand is important to business success. A good brand is easily recognisable and immediately tells your audience what you’re all about – it can also help you stand out from your competitors and help you show off your personality and flair. But how do you develop a winning brand? Chamberlink offers some top tips.

Where to start

Figuring out your brand position

What’s in a name?

The first thing to do is identify your audience.

They are the ones who will hopefully be buying your product, so it’s important that you tailor your brand’s voice, design and marketing strategy in such a way that catches their eye.

You can identify your audience by: Examining your existing customers: If you already have a loyal customer base, get to know them. What is their age range? Where do they live? Do they shop with you for convenience, or is there something else about you that they like?

Examining your competition: What are your competitors doing differently? Do they reach a larger demographic of customers and if so, how can you target them as well?

Creating buyer personas: Think about your ideal customer and create a profile for them, outlining their age, gender, likes and dislikes.

What do they want from your product? How can you meet their expectations?

With all of this in mind, you can establish the types of people you want to target and consider the existing types of brand that those people are drawn to. You can also look for gaps in the market and see if you can fill it.

Once you’ve identified your customer, you need to decide on your brand position – that is, where your brand will sit on the market. After all, you won’t tempt high-end luxury fashion buyers if your products are budget friendly, and you’ll struggle to tap into the eco-friendly market if your products don’t boast green credentials.

Identifying your brand position is the first step in letting your customers know what they can expect from you.

It’s easy to create a positioning statement. You just need to come up with a short statement – one or two lines will do – which outlines exactly what your business does. This can also incorporate your unique selling point – that is, the thing that sets you apart from your competitors. What do you offer that they don’t?

Shout about it!

Once you have figured out your brand position, you can develop your brand ‘voice’. If you sell homemade goods or children’s toys, for example, a warm, friendly voice would suit better than formal or stylised language. Your brand voice should carry over to your marketing campaigns and all social media content.

You’ve identified your target audience and your position. But a brand is nothing without a business name. The right name should identify everything your customer needs to know about you and your products. If you’re providing a service – perhaps you’re a florist, or a handyman – it’s a good idea to include that in your business name, so you’re easy to find in online searches.

However, if you want your business name to be more unique, making up a word (think of Goop, or Ikea) is a great way to stand yourself out from your competitors… just make sure it’s not impossible to pronounce – or spell!

Pick your name wisely – once it adorns business cards, branding material, or even your storefront, it can be costly to change, not to mention confusing for your customers.

Next step – design a logo With a name decided, your next step is to design a logo. A logo will serve as the ‘face’ for your company and your brand, so you’ll need something that’s not only eye catching but easily identifiable and also unique. Consider all the places your logo will be visible – such as your

website, your social media profiles and product packaging.

If you use a lot of colours, your logo might look muddy or confusing. Pick two or three core ‘brand colours’ that you can use across your business cards, product packaging, and especially online communication. This will help your customers recognise you and your content when they’re scrolling through social media.

Imagery can be used in logos, but keep it simple. You want it to be clean and easily recognisable – the Apple logo is a great example of this!

Fonts can be useful in conveying your brand position too – sans-serif fonts are more modern and friendly, while serif fonts look and feel more traditional. If you include text in your logo, keep in mind long words might be difficult to read on small screens, such as phones.

brand style guide is a useful way to ensure this, especially if you have different members of staff managing different aspects of your business.

Also, don’t be tempted to revamp your brand every year – redesigning your logo or changing your core colours on a whim could alienate your core customer base.

Share and grow Now that you’ve built a brand, you need to share it with the world. Make sure your brand is consistent across your website and social media, and always adhere to your brand voice and core colours. Expansion for tram network Passenger tram services in Birmingham are now running to Millennium Point.

every week – offering travellers seamless links between bus, tram and train for the first time in this part of the city centre.

Major expansion initiatives are also underway, with work ongoing in Meriden Street to continue the line to Digbeth Coach Station and detailed plans are being drawn up for a further extension to the planned 60,000-seater Birmingham City Football Club stadium.

The route is expected to carry on through East Birmingham and

North Solihull to Birmingham Airport.

The new extension is also the first part of the route to branch off from the main West Midlands Metro line between Birmingham and Wolverhampton. A second branch will be opened later this year when trams start running between Wednesbury and Dudley.

The extension to Millennium Point has been delivered by Transport for West Midlands (TfWM), which is part of the West

Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA).

Sandeep Shingadia, executive director of TfWM, said: “This new extension will bring people close to the places where they work, study and visit, while supporting local businesses.

“It is just the beginning of a much wider transformation of our Metro network to connect more communities, open up new opportunities to help our region grow and make travel easier.”

Conference goers get eco-friendly Thousands of conference goers are being encouraged to go green following a partnership between Edgbaston Park Hotel and West Midlands Railway (WMR).

Birmingham hotel and conference centre Edgbaston Park Hotel has partnered with West Midlands Railway (WMR) to offer discounted travel to up to 65,000 conference delegates this year.

The partnership will see WMR offer 20 per cent off rail travel to Edgbaston Park Hotel, located a short walk away from University Station, for guests attending corporate events.

The hotel, which hosts thousands of guests and conference delegates annually, will offer the discount as part of select conference packages with the aim of encouraging public transport use to lower carbon emissions.

Lufthansa celebrates milestone Lufthansa has celebrated 40 years of operations from Birmingham Airport (BHX), having commenced services from the Midlands on 1 April 1986.

The airline’s first flight from BHX connected passengers to Frankfurt, operated by a Boeing 737 with 13 weekly services.

Since starting operations over 40 years ago the airline has offered services direct to Frankfurt, Munich and Dusseldorf and currently operates daily services to Frankfurt and Munich. During this period 11,820,750 passengers have travelled on the airline

Are you ready for increased costs of staff?

Businesses planning for the next financial year are being urged to factor in the full cost of employment ahead of a series of new changes.

The changes that came into force in April 2026 will increase the cost of hiring staff.

HB&O, which has offices in Birmingham, Coventry and Leamington, is warning that many employers may underestimate the full cost of taking on employees when planning their workforce requirements for the next financial year.

Ioana Mateias, payroll expert at HB&O, said: “There are so many variables depending on the business and what benefits are offered, but National Insurance, pensions and statutory costs all add up, which are all nonnegotiable for businesses.

“Using a £35,000 salary as an example, the total cost of

employment has increased noticeably. In 2023/24, an employee on £35,000 generated £3,574.20 in employer National Insurance and £1,050 in pension contributions, bringing the total cost to £39,624.20 per year.

“Under 2026/27 rates, employer National Insurance rises to £4,500 taking the total cost, including £1,050 in pension contributions, to £40,550 per employee. This represents an increase of £925.80 per employee per year.

“Across a workforce of 20 employees on the same salary, this results in an overall increase of £18,516 from which eligible employers can claim the £10,500 Employment Allowance (increased from £5,000).”

National Minimum Wage rates increased from April with the rate for those aged 21 and over rising from £10.42 to £12.71 per hour.

roles, the situation is different for entry-level positions. An apprentice aged 20 earning £8 per hour would receive £1,300 per month, with no employer National Insurance payable provided earnings remain within the exemption threshold.

This results in a total employer cost of £15,600 per year.

All employers, regardless of size, are also being advised to prepare for changes to Statutory Sick Pay. From April, sick pay will be payable from the first day of absence, removing the previous three-day waiting period. Further changes mean that rights such as paternity leave will become day-one rights.

A survey by recruiter Pertemps Network Group, conducted during Neurodiversity Celebration Week, found that 66 per cent of respondents identified interviews as the most challenging stage of the hiring process.

The findings come as UK employers continue to face skills shortages, raising concerns that traditional hiring practices may be unintentionally excluding talented candidates.

Traditional interview formats often rely on rapid responses, reading social cues and unstructured communication. The research suggests these approaches can disadvantage neurodiverse individuals, even when they are well suited to the role.

Abigail Farnham, director at Pertemps, based in Meriden, said: “Removing barriers to employment continues to be a priority for many of our clients, and a growing number are asking for support to reassess their hiring practices, so they are accessible, inclusive and reflective of different ways of thinking and communicating.

Recovering unspent section 106 funds Michelle Perring (pictured), senior associate in Stephens Scown’s Planning team, highlights that councils across England are currently holding an estimated £6bn in unspent Section 106 (s106) contributions.

A significant proportion of this money may now be due to be refunded to those entitled to it.

S106 contributions are taken to make development acceptable in planning terms, usually to fund specific, identified infrastructure projects. Crucially, well-drafted s106 agreements include a clear obligation that, if the relevant project is not fully delivered within a defined timeframe, any unspent balance must be returned.

If the infrastructure has not been delivered, the council cannot simply retain the money or redirect it elsewhere. While local authorities

rarely take steps to identify beneficiaries proactively, they remain legally obliged to account for what has been spent and to repay any surplus when properly requested.

Landowners and developers should review how contributions and refunds were structured. In some cases, refunds are payable to original landowners who may be unaware they are entitled to reclaim funds many years later.

How historic manufacturer uncovered long-lost Titanic connection As the world marked 114 years since the sinking of the RMS Titanic on 14 April, a Birmingham manufacturer has revealed how a chance moment led to the rediscovery of its historic connection to one of the world’s most famous maritime disasters.

ACME Whistles, based in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter, supplied whistles to the RMS Titanic before its maiden voyage in 1912, something that went unnoticed within the company for decades until managing director Simon Topman, who was president of Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce in 2005-06, made the connection after watching the 1997 film Titanic with his children.

He said: “As the film approached its climax, Rose had watched her new-found lover sink beneath the Atlantic and then she picked up a whistle and blew it. It was heard by sailors searching for survivors and she was rescued.

“I just knew the original used had to be an ACME whistle. Could it have been that we supplied whistles to the Titanic?

“I missed the rest of the film, rushed back to the factory, and there, inside an ancient, oil-stained ledger, was a complete record of everything we had supplied since 1870. Sure enough, we had supplied 30 whistles to the White Star Line for use on the Titanic in 1912.”

Remarkably, although ACME Whistles had been used in the 1997 film, with Kate Winslet’s character seen blowing one during the climactic scenes, the company only made the connection after watching the film in full, not realising at the time that their own historic products were featured on screen.

From the factory records, Simon then uncovered the original tooling and records still preserved in the Birmingham workshop.

“From that ledger, I went to the oak pigeonholes in the press shop and found the original tooling used to make those whistles. We then remade 50 perfect replicas using the original tools and machinery that would have been in use at the time, in the same workshop.”

Founded in 1870, ACME Whistles moved into its Jewellery Quarter factory in 1909 and would have supplied the White Star Line shortly afterwards.

The company remains in the same Barr Street premises today, still using the original workshop, fly presses, tools, dies and traditional handfinishing techniques passed down through generations.

Whistles played a vital role aboard Titanic, used by officers to signal commands, coordinate lifeboats and maintain order during the evacuation.

Historical accounts suggest Fifth officer Harold Lowe used an officer’s whistle during the sinking, with the ACME Thunderer widely believed to be the type used at the time.

Ben McFarlane, head of sales and marketing at ACME Whistles, said: “We’re still in the same building as when the original whistles supplied for the Titanic were made, and we’re still using some of the same machinery, which is something quite special for Birmingham and its heritage as the City of a Thousand Trades.”

Grey belt policy increases housing planning permissions New analysis from planning, design and development consultancy Marrons shows that grey belt policy continues to have a major impact on housing planning permissions, with 75 per cent of major residential appeals approved since the policy’s introduction in December 2024.

The study reviewed all 224 planning appeals referencing “grey belt” between 12 December 2024 and 28 February 2026.

The headline finding shows that 18 of 24 major residential schemes – defined as developments of 10 or more dwellings – were allowed by the Planning Inspectorate.

The most common residential grey belt appeal size is between two and nine dwellings, with 22 out of 73 schemes gaining approval.

Overall, 48 of 111 residential grey belt appeals were allowed, equating to a success rate of 43 per cent.

The data also highlights a clear pattern – the larger the site, the more likely it is to gain approval.

Compared with Marrons’ previous analysis – which was directly cited in the government’s Autumn Budget (October 2025) – covering the period to 31 August 2025, the success rate for major residential appeals has dipped slightly from 80 per cent to 75 per cent.

Across all the 224 grey belt appeals (comprising all land uses), 50 per cent have been allowed – rising to 53 per cent when including the part allowed, part dismissed decisions as allowed – down from 57 per cent previously, with residential schemes now making up 50 per cent of appeals compared to 73 per cent in the earlier period.

Roland Brass, planning director at Marrons, said: “Grey belt policy continues to be a game changer for achieving major residential planning permissions. The data shows that larger sites in particular are much more likely to succeed, which is crucial for unlocking the scale of development we need to address the housing crisis.”

Introduced in the revised NPPF on 12 December 2024, grey belt designations identify lowerperforming areas of Green Belt land that can be released for development where it is appropriate.

Upskill staff with Serco’s digital skills bootcamp Widening training: A UCB student

UCB extends student support University College Birmingham (UCB) has announced two significant measures aimed at widening participation and supporting the West Midlands skills economy.

The launch of eight fullyfunded Employers’ Scholarships targeted at students facing financial and personal barriers to higher education, and there is a rise in its cost-of-living allowance to £6,000 for new undergraduates starting in 2026.

Each one of the new suites of Employers’ Scholarships covers full tuition, accommodation and a substantial bursary.

Backed by organisations including Siemens, Hobart, Red Carnation Hotels, Miss Macaroon and the City of Birmingham Rockets Basketball Club, the programme provides mentoring, industry experience and a direct route into sectors experiencing skills shortages.

The Cost of Living Allowance is non repayable, non means tested and simple to access, and positions UCB as a sector outlier at a time when national policy offers little relief for students.

“As long as the cost of living for students remains challenging, the pressures facing young people will not go away,” said Professor Michael Harkin, vice-chancellor and principal.

"At UCB, we see this reality every day; students are working harder than ever simply to stay afloat and, in many cases, opting out of higher education altogether.

“Raising our Cost-of-Living Allowance to £6,000 is a deliberate choice to stand with them. Combined, these two initiatives cement our ongoing dedication to widening participation, removing barriers and ensuring that talent, not background, shapes our students’ future.”

Serco Employment, Skills and Training is launching the next intake of the Government Skills for Life ‘Digital Skills for the Workplace’ Bootcamp.

It is available to businesses operating in the West Midlands Combined Authority region.

Firms can get involved either by filling current or upcoming digital roles for free or by upskilling existing staff.

Serco is willing to provide highly motivated candidates who have completed industry-relevant digital training.

In return Serco requires guaranteed interviews for suitable learners once they complete the programme.

Employees who earn below £34,000 per year can access the training fully funded, subject to eligibility.

Ready to strum: The guitar students

Guitar students shine at community music workshop A community music workshop hosted by Guitaria Music Tuition brought together aspiring guitarists, families, and music enthusiasts for live performances.

It attracted more than 65 attendees and showcased performances from students of all ages and abilities.

Organised in Aldridge by guitar tutor David Lycett, the workshop is one of several performance sessions held each year to help students develop confidence and real stage experience.

Unlike a typical recital, the workshop focuses heavily on the skills behind performing live.

Students learn practical techniques for preparing for a performance, managing nerves and developing a positive mindset before stepping on stage.

David said: “The aim is to give students a safe and supportive environment where they can experience performing in front of an audience.

“It’s not just about playing the right notes it’s about learning how to relax, prepare properly, and enjoy sharing music with others.”

David’s teaching approach has also attracted recognition within the music industry.

Cyber security explained in videos A new series of cyber security explainer videos has been launched for businesses across the Midlands, following a programme of Cyber Local Midlands roundtables delivered by the Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce and the East Midlands Chamber in partnership with Innovate UK. The roundtables brought together SMEs, cyber specialists, academics, policymakers and business support organisations to discuss how the regional ecosystem can better help smaller firms build cyber resilience.

Many businesses highlighted the rising sophistication of cyber attacks, persistent awareness gaps and the challenges SMEs face in accessing clear, trustworthy guidance.

To address these concerns, the questions raised directly by businesses during the sessions have been transformed into a set of concise, practical explainer videos — produced in partnership with Intercity Technology.

The videos aim to help businesses understand key cyber security issues, from foundational protections and risk awareness to

navigating a fragmented support landscape.

SMEs at the roundtables emphasised the need for simple, jargon-free resources that cut

through complexity and make cyber resilience feel achievable rather than overwhelming.

The new videos respond to that call by offering accessible advice,

The Cyber Local Midlands project represents a shared commitment to strengthening the region’s cyber ecosystem and empowering businesses to better protect themselves, their customers and their supply chains.

The Chambers and Innovate UK will continue working to provide clear, practical resources that meet SMEs where they are and support a more resilient regional economy.

GBCC senior policy advisor Ruth Fleet said: “This project has really highlighted the growing concerns that SMEs have and how important it is for the cyber sector across the Midlands to grow and to engage with businesses directly.

A practical guide to AI for manufacturers Birmingham-based technology consultancy B13 has launched AI for Manufacturers: A Practical Guide – a resource designed to cut through the noise surrounding artificial intelligence and digitalisation in the manufacturing sector.

The guide has been developed in partnership with the Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce (GBCC), drawing on survey data gathered directly from member businesses.

It addresses one of the most pressing but underreported challenges facing manufacturing SMEs today – that despite enormous pressure to adopt AI, 95 per cent of AI initiatives still struggle to demonstrate ROI. The reason is often that businesses are jumping to AI before establishing the digital foundations that make it work.

In a survey conducted in partnership with the GBCC, B13 found that 40 per cent of businesses are blocked from AI or digitalisation adoption due to budget constraints and 43 per cent struggle with project delays or a lack of internal expertise 66 CHAMBERLINK May 2026

Floating studio to inspire youth Ikon Gallery has launched Slow Boat 2026 – the gallery’s annual floating arts studio and residency space supported by Freelands Foundation.

Travelling over 150 miles of the West Midlands canal network, Slow Boat hosts free workshops, conversations and creative collaborations with young people, communities and contemporary artists.

The Slow Boat route has been designed by members of Ikon Youth Programme (IYP) – emerging artists, curators, musicians, writers and creatives aged 16–21.

Inspired by the Victorian craft traditions, the 2026 programme explores themes of heritage, place and shared creativity. Workshops are free for young people, with opportunities to learn from contemporary artists, while exploring local histories and co-curating creative projects.

The workshops are in Tipton (11 May–24 May), Stourbridge (1–13 June), Halesowen (22 June–4 July), Smethwick (11–19 July), Birmingham (27 July–30 August) and Coventry (7–26 September).

Jim Simpson backs bid for City of Music status The original manager of Black Sabbath has pledged his full support for what he called Birmingham’s “adventurous and exciting” bid for official City of Music status.

Jim Simpson managed Ozzy Osbourne and Tony Iommi’s original Earth band in 1969, soon relaunching them as Black Sabbath and releasing their first two legendary albums called Black Sabbath and Paranoid in 1970.

Simpson lost control of Black Sabbath shortly afterwards, but more than 55 years later he’s still enthusiastic about the band’s birth in Birmingham and how this can help elevate the city’s rich musical heritage.

Now in his mid-80s and still ubiquitous on the Midlands’ music scene with his Big Bear Music company, Jim said: “Black Sabbath’s global popularity alone qualifies Birmingham as the birthplace of heavy metal, but the city has so much more music to celebrate on top of that.

Youth, The Nightingales, Ocean Colour Scene, The Spencer Davis Group, The Move and ELO. “As well as history, you’ve got the current live music scene in so many genres, including top jazz and blues, and some of the world’s best classical music from the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire.

“For the city council to be looking at how to package this all

up as Birmingham’s bid for City of Music status is a fantastic idea, and I’m keen to help in any way I can.”

Jim’s comments follow the approval of a £1m culture fund in Birmingham City Council’s latest budget. The council is expected to release its bid plans shortly, but they are known to include The Crown, the vacant pub on Station Street, formerly the home of Henry’s Blueshouse, where Black Sabbath played their first gig.

ELO’s silver electric cello donated to Conservatoire A one-of-a-kind silver electric cello that toured with ELO in the 1970s has been donated to the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire (RBC) by former band member Mel Gale.

The instrument joins the Richard Tandy memorabilia collection, which was given to RBC last year and is now housed in the Suite.

The suite features instruments and studio equipment used by ELO’s keyboardist, alongside his gold records and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame statue.

Gale, who played cello for ELO from 1975 to 1980, explained his decision to donate the cello, citing an event held at RBC in November last year to commemorate Tandy.

“After watching the Richard Tandy tribute concert, I thought the RBC students were so brilliant, and I remembered I had the cello sitting in a cupboard at home,” said Gale.

“There was no such thing as an electric cello when ELO was performing, so we made one.

“The Richard Tandy production suite is brilliant. The facilities here are so much more diverse than what I had when I was studying music and I hope it’ll inspire future musicians to be enthusiastic and passionate about what they create.”

Tandy, who died in 2024 at the age of 76, also has a scholarship in his name, made possible by a donation from his wife, Sheila, and a fundraising campaign led by ELO founder Jeff Lynne.

Villa’s North Stand to close Aston Villa are to accelerate the redevelopment of the North Stand at Villa Park in a move that will involve closure of the stand for the whole of next season.

The planned redevelopment was due to take place across two seasons but now the stand will be closed for the entirety of 2026-27 while the work takes place.

It means the capacity will fall to around 37,000.

The redevelopment will increase the overall capacity of Villa Park to over 50,000, and create around 500 square metres of new first-team changing, medical and physiotherapy facilities, alongside the upgrade of all player competition areas.

Season ticket holders forced to relocate for the 2026-27 season will be given the opportunity to renew their ticket in an alternative area of Villa Park at the same price level and get priority access to return to the redeveloped North Stand for the 2027-28 season.

A statement from the club said: “This decision has been taken following extensive planning and assessment, and reflects the club's commitment to minimising disruption for supporters while delivering meaningful improvements to both the fan and footballing experience at Villa Park.

“The new, accelerated plan for the works also incorporates operational efficiencies, which will lead to significant cost savings and a shorter timeline.

“By completing the works within a single season, the club will limit disruption to one campaign. This will allow us to open the new North Stand standard seating and concourse facilities for the full 2027-28 season.”

Football star invests in cricket franchise Real Madrid and England football star Jude Bellingham has taken a minority shareholding in The Hundred franchise Birmingham Phoenix.

Jude will take 1.2 per cent of the equity. Half of this amount has been sold by Warwickshire County Cricket Club and the other half by affiliates of Knighthead Capital Management, who also own Jude’s former club Birmingham City.

Warwickshire will maintain majority control with 50.4 per cent and Knighthead holding 48.4 per cent.

The Stourbridge-born star’s investment in the Birmingham Phoenix will see him take a keen interest in community engagement and CSR projects within Birmingham and the surrounding areas, with increasing participation in cricket – a sport he enjoyed growing up.

Jude said: “I love Birmingham. I'm very grateful for what the whole city of Birmingham has done for me. I love cricket as well so when I got the opportunity to get involved I didn't really think twice about it, so I'm so happy to be on board.

“I want to let kids know, let adults know that there’s opportunities to go and enjoy sports. I was fortunate growing up I had the option of playing cricket and playing football, but some kids don't have that opportunity.

“To be able to interact with people, understand people from different backgrounds and also realise you can have a good time with anyone, I think that's the beauty of sport. It brings people together, especially now more than ever.”

New partners for Warwickshire With the cricket season back in full swing, Warwickshire CCC have announced three major new partners.

The Edgbaston club have joined forces with Haier part of the global Haier Group, a leading home appliances and consumer electronics company – who have become their lead partner.

Meanwhile, a new partnership between Warwickshire and the University of Birmingham is designed to support promising young cricketers.

New measures have also been introduced to enhance the matchday experience for visually impaired cricket fans – with Edgbaston becoming the first cricket ground in the world to offer Give Vision headsets at every game.

From this season, Haier Group will take prime placement on the front of all Warwickshire men’s playing shirts as part of the three-year agreement.

Adam Lowe, commercial director at Warwickshire, said: “We are really pleased to welcome Haier as our new lead partner.

“Their reputation as a market leader globally aligns perfectly with the type of brand which should adorn the front of the Bears’ shirt.”

Seeing the action: The GiveVision device

University of Birmingham has become the lead partner of the Warwickshire County Cricket Club Pathway, as well as the club’s official university partner.

The multi-year agreement aims to remove all barriers to entry for budding young cricketers on the Pathway.

The introduction of GiveVision headsets at every matchday follows a successful trial in 2025.

The free service aims to enable visually impaired fans to follow the action in real time. The headset enhances the user’s remaining vision by stimulating the photoreceptor cells of the eye, bringing the live action directly to the user.

What does your company do?

Queen Alexandra Charity, Birmingham is a registered charity providing support for complex disability needs, both physical and learning. Its services help students and adults with disabilities build independence, develop skills and move toward fulfilling adult lives.

How did it all start?

The charity’s origins are interwoven with the Birmingham Institute for the Blind (BRIB) since 1847. It has evolved from a small school for people with visual impairments into a modern, multiservice disability charity. The organisation has been based at the main Harborne campus since 1903 when Royal patronage was granted to BRIB by Queen Alexandra.

What’s your greatest achievement so far?

Leading the organisation through a significant strategic rebrand and service expansion in 2024, transforming QAC – a college, into the Queen Alexandra Charity, Birmingham, with a clear identity and purpose.

What is the biggest risk you’ve ever taken – and did it work out?

Overseeing the organisational rebrand and restructuring was a major strategic risk – shifting from a single, well established, nationally known college identity to a broader disability charity with multiple service streams. It worked.

What keeps you awake at night?

Things that are important and priorities for me are ensuring that our students and clients, all with complex needs, are safe, receive quality, personalised support and the opportunities they deserve.

If you could turn the clock back, what would you do differently?

I would have learned earlier in my career that goal posts move frequently and quickly in education and business and that it is always worth taking a breath, waiting and watching to see what is really required before making any significant plans.

What has surprised you most in your job?

Just how capable and ambitious young people are when they are provided with the right environment, support and opportunities.

What advice would you give to someone starting out?

Be prepared for constant learning and to not know all the answers; put in the effort, get involved and be genuinely interested in people.

Which business do you most admire?

Values driven organisations that improve lives and give people hope in themselves, their societies and in what they can achieve.

What exciting projects is your business working on?

The significant and hugely generous asset transfer of our Harborne estate – from BRIB to the QA Charity, Birmingham, this year – has meant we have been able to develop an ambitious 10year college estates plan to 2035.

This has resulted in The Building Brighter Futures capital fundraising initiative currently just commenced and we have plans to expand QA Enterprises into new, exciting directions.

Transport fest drives into town Birmingham Colmore, the curators of Colmore Life, are set to bring a new, free-to-attend festival to Birmingham this September, celebrating the region’s remarkable transport heritage and future ambitions.

Brum Transport Fest will take place from Friday 18 to Sunday 20 September, activating locations across the city centre as the West Midlands’ extraordinary role in the UK’s transport story takes centre stage.

The festival will spotlight the region’s legacy of motor engineering excellence and innovation, bringing together organisations, partners and enthusiasts to mark Birmingham’s past, present and future in transport.

Melanie Williams, board director and lead of the Colmore Placemaking Working Group, said: “Brum Transport Fest will be a celebration of what makes Birmingham and the West Midlands region the home of makers and innovators.

“We’re excited to invite the public to come together this September and share in the pride, creativity and ambition that continue to drive our region forward.”

Events space plants the seed The Birmingham Conference & Events Centre (BCEC), alongside Holiday Inn Birmingham City Centre, has launched a new sustainability-led initiative designed to help event organisers make a positive environmental impact.

In partnership with Trees for Life, the venue is inviting clients to “plant the seed” for their next event.

For every new meeting or event confirmed in May, a tree will be planted on behalf of the organiser within the Cairn Canopy – a dedicated tree grove located in the Scottish Highlands.

Paula Moran, director of sales and marketing, said: “Achieving our Silver accreditation was a proud moment for the team, and this initiative is a natural next step - giving our clients an easy way to create real impact.”

...as city showcases its best bars and hospitality venues Birmingham’s vibrant wine scene will take centre stage this month as the Colmore Wine Showcase comes to the city on Saturday, 9 May, at the iconic Grand Hotel Birmingham.

The event, curated by Birmingham Colmore (the team behind Colmore Life), invites guests to discover exciting new wines in a relaxed, welcoming setting.

Celebrating the very best of the city’s wine and hospitality venues, the Wine Showcase brings together leading names including Loki, Arch 13, Vagabond, Hotel du Vin, and Birmingham’s first urban winemaker Midlands Press, alongside expert sommeliers.

Felicity Blades, marketing manager at Birmingham Colmore, said: “The Colmore Wine Showcase is all about celebrating Birmingham’s fantastic wine scene in a way that feels open, social and unpretentious. We’re bringing

together some of the city’s most exciting venues and experts to create a relaxed environment where people can discover something new, whether they’re completely new to wine or already passionate about it.”

Attendees can expect an afternoon of tasting, learning, and informal exploration, all within a stunning venue overlooking Cathedral Square.

Each ticket includes three wine samples and light antipasti, with additional talks, tasting activities, and surprise drops planned throughout the day. Two sittings are available at 2pm and 4:30pm, offering flexibility for attendees to enjoy at their own pace. Tickets are priced at £15 plus booking fee.

The Colmore Wine Showcase aims to make wine fun, accessible, and unpretentious, perfect for both newcomers and seasoned enthusiasts looking to try something new in the heart of Birmingham.
