Working together to break down barriers

Y

ou only have to go back to the Sixties to appreciate how far we have come in equal rights for women.

It wasn’t until that era (only seven decades ago) that equal pay for equal work was set in law; sex discrimination was outlawed; contraceptive and family planning advice was made available to all; abortion was legalised; pre-marital sex was accepted; underrepresentation of females in Parliament began to ease.

But it was not until more recent times that the way women were represented in the media began to change with the easing of gender stereotyping.

And, of course, women’s rights have ventured into previously unknown territories like the current debate around the Supreme Court battle over the legal definition of a woman.

I can remember when women were barred from entering a certain bar in a famous pub in Fleet Street; there was also an institution in Birmingham where women were not free to dine in its restaurant; and the presence of a woman on the editorial floor of a newspaper was rarity.

So it is with great pride that in this

edition of Chamberlink we celebrate the success of many women achieving distinction, not the least of which is the two successful Birmingham businesswomen who have been voted to the helm of the Asian Business Chamber of Commerce.

We also have a new female president for Future Faces, the young professionals’ arm of Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce.

And an event will take place in June that will go a long way to inspiring future generations of women. Sport Birmingham will be staging the inaugural Girls of Birmingham event for 11-12-year-olds, a city-wide celebration of sport and physical activity, designed to inspire the next generation of young women to get active, build confidence and feel empowered.

The aim is to break down barriers, promote positive relationships, and provide a supportive, empowering environment where girls can experience the joy of being active. The full story is on page 27.

We have talked a lot over the years about Birmingham’s great diversity. It’s now a great joy to see it happening in reality without ignoring we still have a long way to go.

Businesswomen in key Chamber roles

hree successful businesswomen have taken the helm at two of the most influential divisions of Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce (GBCC).

Sapreena Kumari and Neelam Afzal have become pioneering co-presidents of the Asian Business Chamber of Commerce (ABCC) and Sarah Griffiths has been elected president of Future Faces, the young professionals’ arm of the GBCC. Sapreena is CEO of SK Consulting and Neelam is a solicitor and partner at Wildings Solicitors. Sarah is director of PMO (project management office) at Intercity Technology, the leading experts in technology, cloud and security services based in Birmingham.

V chef Glynn Purnell led a collective show of Brummie pride at the inaugural Brumbassadors event hosted by Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce (GBCC).

And the restaurateur – nicknamed the Yummy Brummie – told more than 120 delegates: “We need to shout about ourselves more.”

Chamber members assembled at Birmingham City Football Club’s stadium, St Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park, for the launch of the Brumbassadors initiative which is designed to champion all that is great about Birmingham.

The display of Brummie pride was timely, with negative news headlines about the city in recent weeks detracting from its many success stories across business, arts, culture and sport.

Many of those strengths were highlighted by a panel featuring Birmingham City interim CEO Jeremy Dale, city curator Alex Nicholson-Evans, Birmingham Museums Trust co-CEO Sara Wajid and tech giant Cisco’s managing director for the public sector, Adele Every.

Glynn took attendees on a humorous and self-deprecating journey through his early life growing up in Chelmsley Wood through to earning the city’s first Michelin star.

And his message to fellow Brummies was: “ I think we need to sell ourselves a bit more. We're quite understated and we don't give ourselves enough credit.”

Glynn, who closed his Michelinstarred restaurant in October but continues to operate Plates by Purnell in the city centre, also waxed lyrical about Birmingham’s

food scene. He said the city is now one of the UK’s dining hotspots, having shed its past reputation as the “culinary desert”.

“We’ve got so much great young talent and those who have been around for a while,” he added.

“There are some great restaurants in Birmingham and our street food is fab, which is giving the independents an opportunity to get out there.”

Event host GBCC chief executive Henrietta Brealey, asked Brumbassador delegates to share “what’s brilliant in Brum?” by answering a short poll on some of the city’s highlights.

The top five answers were: • Food, Glorious Food: Birmingham’s culinary scene – from street food to its Michelinstar restaurants and thriving independent scene • The Future of Media: Digbeth is becoming a centre of TV and film production, with major investments such as Steven Knight’s Digbeth Loc Studios and the BBC’s Tea Factory • All the World’s Brum’s Stage: The city is home to renowned arts organisations and institutions, who are wowing audiences around the world and attracting iconic performers to the city • A Truly Global City: One of Birmingham’s major strengths is its diversity, with strong international ties and more than 100 languages spoken • The Future of Sport: The city continues to attract major sporting events such as the 2026 European Athletics Championships and the 2027 Invictus Games, while Birmingham City FC owners Knightead Capital are poised to invest nearly £3bn in a new Sports Quarter.

Interim chiefs are to cover CEO’s maternity leave Two respected and long-serving members of Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce’s senior leadership team are stepping up to lead the organisation on an interim basis.

Helen Bates and Raj Kandola will take the reins of the region’s premier business membership organisation until Spring 2026 while chief executive Henrietta Brealey is on maternity leave.

Henrietta said: “I’m even more excited to take on this new adventure - becoming a parent knowing the Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce is in such capable hands while I’m away.

“Both Raj and Helen are talented leaders who share my dedication to the mission of the Chamber.

“Raj brings a wealth of experience in shaping and leading key areas of our work, along with deep expertise in stakeholder, partner, and media engagement.

“Helen is a trusted executive with

a strong track record in organisational leadership and management, including previous interim CEO roles.

“Together, they’ll be a formidable team. I look forward to continuing to cheer them on, the Chamber, Greater Birmingham and its business community from a distance, until I return in spring 2026.”

Helen, the GBCC’s chief financial officer since 2017, is assuming the role of managing director – taking on overall internal leadership responsibilities within the Chamber.

She has previous experience of acting CEO roles at Birmingham’s Hippodrome theatre and the Festival City Theatres Trust.

Helen said: “I’m excited to be stepping up, alongside Raj, to lead the Chamber - and keep the seat warm for Henrietta.

“We have a talented team at the Chamber and I look forward to working with them over the coming

months to ensure we remain on track to deliver on our strategy and goals.”

Meanwhile, Raj will oversee all of the Chamber’s external activities – including acting as the organisation’s most senior spokesperson and representative with members, partners and stakeholders.

Raj has held the position of director of external affairs since March 2023.

He joined the GBCC in 2016, initially as a senior policy advisor, before earning a promotion to head of policy and strategic relationships

five years later.

Raj is highly regarded within the Greater Birmingham business community, having represented the Chamber in key member and stakeholder networks, as well as playing a prominent role in developing the patronage scheme.

Raj said: “It’s an honour to be asked to lead the Chamber alongside Helen over the coming months.

“Henrietta’s are big shoes to fill but I’m looking forward to leading our external activities and maintaining the momentum she has created.”

Businesses need roadmap for growth, says Chamber

usinesses across Greater Birmingham have experienced a mixed start to 2025 – with sales in the manufacturing sector hit by a “challenging environment” and new US trade tariffs.

The pressures on manufacturers are revealed in Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce’s (GBCC) Quarterly Business Report for the first three months of 2025 as industry geared up to face the effects of trade tariffs imposed by President Trump.

However, many firms remain cautiously optimistic about sales growth despite a lowering of profit expectations, according to the quarterly report, a major barometer of West Midlands business sentiment.

The report has prompted business leaders to call for a new “roadmap” to reduce costs, reform business rates and boost trading conditions as 2025 unfolds.

‘The overall domestic environment has proved challenging when it comes to stimulating business growth’ Henrietta Brealey, GBCC’s chief executive, said: “The latest Quarterly Business Report highlights a mixed start to 2025 for Greater Birmingham businesses. Following the positive direction of travel on domestic demand at the end of 2024, sentiment has dipped slightly which has been driven by a notable decline in sales within the manufacturing sector.

“While the services sector proved more resilient, the overall domestic environment has proved challenging when it comes to stimulating business growth. Export demand has also weakened, which will have been partially driven by the uncertainty created by President Trump’s recent and expected announcements of tariffs on a range of UK exports to the United States.”

The economic survey, produced in partnership with Birmingham City University, reveals that the first quarter of the year has seen a slight dip in domestic sales growth with 44 per cent of respondents increasing their UK sales volumes in the first quarter, marking a fall of three percentage points since the final quarter of 2024.

Meanwhile, 36 per cent cite that their domestic sales remained constant throughout the first quarter – up from 35 per cent in Q4 – while 20 per cent have seen a decrease.

The fall in domestic sales demand has been felt most acutely by manufacturers with just 31 per cent reporting an increase in sales in the first quarter.

Jude Pearson, interim director of engagement, enterprise and innovation at Birmingham City University, said: “Notably, the manufacturing sector reported a pronounced decline in the proportion of businesses reporting increased overseas, which fell from 53 per cent to 33 per cent over the past three months. From a domestic perspective, the Q1 survey indicated a continued decline in sales and bookings as reported by one in five over the last quarter.”

The survey shows that the first quarter has seen a downturn in business confidence among exporters with just 27 per cent of respondents seeing an increase in export sales, a decrease from 33 per cent the previous quarter.

Meanwhile, 58 per cent of respondents said their export sales remained constant during the first quarter while 15 per cent saw a decrease.

Raj Kandola, director of External Affairs at the GBCC, added: “The Chancellor’s self-imposed fiscal rules leave very little headroom as we approach a crucial period for businesses.

“At the recent Spring statement, the Chancellor made it clear that taxes would not go up – businesses up and down the country no doubt breathed a sigh of relief given the disproportionate impact they suffered from the announcements made in the October budget.

“However, as our latest analysis shows, concerns around corporate taxation remain prevalent as businesses begin to adapt to the changes in the National Insurance framework and the national living wage.”

The survey found the first quarter of the year had seen relative stability in business headcount with 27 per cent of respondents increasing their workforce and 61 per cent retaining existing staffing levels. Meanwhile, price pressures remain a continuing issue, with 53 per cent saying their prices were likely to rise over the upcoming quarter, three percentage points higher than Q4, marking the highest figure recorded since Q4 2022.

Henrietta Brealey added: “The ask from local businesses is loud and clear – a roadmap for reducing costs, reforming business rates and improving trading conditions is needed to help boost business confidence.”

President’s Focus Emma-Louise Hewitt partner and head of employment law at Sydney Mitchell solicitors, is the newly-elected president of Solihull Chamber of Commerce. Emma says helping businesses maximise their membership will be a priority of her presidency.

T

he adage “you only get out what you put in” is a universal truth that applies to memberships, whether they are for a gym or a Chamber of Commerce.

Simply paying for a gym membership is not going to achieve your fitness goals.

So, what do we do in that scenario, we cancel it. Why do we do that? Because we see no difference, neither do we see any benefit or value from it. Let’s be honest, we’ve all been there, haven’t we?

We’ve not seen the results, or we have expected results quicker. But when you consider it, we haven’t put in the time or put in the effort to maximise the results.

Equally, we may have only utilised part of our membership and missed out on the other aspects of that membership which would have been more beneficial and given us better results.

The Griffin Report From wedding photography to working with the likes of Tom Cruise and Gareth Southgate – Streetly-based Jake Barrett now runs a UK global film production company. JON GRIFFIN caught up with the boss of the now half-million-turnover company.

A

tiny slice of Birmingham industry played a major part in bringing the build-up to the biggest annual sporting event in America to millions of TV screens worldwide with the help of Tom Cruise…

But one of the biggest names in Hollywood history had been just as keen to discuss the delights of the menu at renowned Brummie Indian restaurant Asha’s when filming for the Superbowl preview, which took place at Pinewood Studios.

Jake Barrett, founder and production director of city-based film production company BTV.UK, is recalling his one-off afternoon with Hollywood royalty which would provide the TV introduction to February's world sporting spectacular.

“We were talking about curry and he said has anyone got any good recommendations for London

restaurants because I fancy an Indian tonight? I said ‘funny you should say that because we are from Birmingham’.

“He was like ‘I love Asha’s, the food there is so good’. We were talking about that for ages. On the shoot day we had him for three and a half hours - it was supposed to be an hour.

“But he gave us so much time - it was amazing. I had a lot of respect for him before but to work with him and to see his work ethic and how much passion he’d got for everything was unreal.

“That job was amazing proof of what we can do as a team. We just pulled in the very best people that we know, that we’ve built relationships with and we trust.”

venture founded by Streetly-based film production director Jake.

BTV had also previously worked with high-profile names such as legendary film director Sir Ridley Scott, baseball star Chase Utley and at St George's Park, Burton, with the England football team led by then manager Gareth Southgate in the build-up to the Qatar World Cup in December 2022.

‘Those jobs aren't every day - they're not our bread and butter’ Quite a roll-call of international talent - but the former Cannock schoolboy, who has built BTV into a six-figure turnover operation within a few short years, is keen to stress that he doesn't rub shoulders with the likes of Tom Cruise or Gareth Southgate every day of the working week…

“Those jobs aren't every day they're not our bread and butter. It doesn't matter whether you are a small business wanting to do their first ever promo all the way up to FOX Sports. We come with the same process and drive and passion for all of them - it's not like you have got to pay £100,000 to work with us.”

That attention to detail has brought BTV a string of blue-chip clients, from E.ON to FOX Sports, Subaru, Isuzu, Bosch, and many other well-known names as well as smaller one-off jobs as the Birmingham firm’s reputation continues to grow.

A keen horse-rider in his youth - a hobby shared with his mother and sister - Jake developed a taste for photography, capturing images of his horses.

“It was just a hobby and by the age of 15 I was doing weddings for people.”

That talent for photography would prove the catalyst for the fledgling business that would eventually become BTV. But working with the likes of Tom Cruise and Gareth Southgate didn't just fall into Jake's lap - they were the culmination of years of hard work leading on from his days photographing horses and weddings

before a two-year course in creative media production at Birmingham Ormiston Academy.

From 2015 he built up his camera experience in a series of roles at a string of film and video ventures, including London TV production company Dragonfly, North One Television with the Gadget Show, co-founding Hipster with TV, billboard and social media assignments.

And Bromsgrove-based Superdream, managing film content for international clients - before branching out on his own with BTV. “There were about 40 of us over at Bromsgrove. That was just great for me because I had learnt so much about the film side of stuff and Superdream provided me with fundamental marketing knowledge which was like gold - it set me up for the rest of my career.

“Since then, we’ve just kind of run with it. It's developed so much since then in so many different ways and I focused on what I do best as a producer.

BTV'S reputation has grown to such an extent in a relatively short period of time that an overwhelming 95 per cent of its business is from referrals, often from agency clients and contacts established over the years.

Glass tax is unfair to our venues A new “glass tax” which is set to increase the running costs of already hard-pressed bars and restaurants has been condemned by a leading Birmingham business district.

The Southside District is outraged at the packaging extended producer responsibility (pEPR) scheme, which came into effect at the beginning of April, supposedly transferring glass recycling costs from local authorities to producers and businesses.

Julia Robinson, general manager of Southside District, which supports more than 330 businesses in Birmingham’s Chinatown and Gay Village, has warned that the new tax will result in hospitality venues paying twice for the same service.

Ms Robinson said: “This new ‘glass tax’ as it stands will be

grossly unfair to our hospitality venues like bars and restaurants because they already pay for their commercial waste to be collected and glass to be recycled.

“We can understand the need to tax supermarkets and off-licences to help local authorities pay for glass recycling, but why should bars and restaurants have to pay twice and receive one service?

“The government needs to quickly rethink and change this new ‘glass tax’ or else they will further damage an already struggling hospitality industry, leading to more closures and redundancies.”

Ms Robinson’s condemnation of the ‘glass tax’ has been echoed by James Wong, owner of the Chung Ying restaurant in Birmingham’s Chinatown, and a director of the Southside District.

Mr Wong has now written to Ladywood Labour MP Shabana Mahmood, whose constituency includes his restaurant, asking her to appeal to the government on behalf of the hospitality sector.

Mr Wong’s letter says: “The introduction of the ‘glass tax’ is yet another hit to a hospitality sector already at breaking point.

Businesses across the UK are shutting their doors every week, but instead of relief, we’re being handed yet another cost.

“Many venues already pay privately for glass collection. Now they’re expected to pay again – without any additional service or clear benefit. Hospitality is vital to our economy and community life here in Birmingham, yet policies like this show how disconnected the government is from the reality of what we’re facing. We need support, not more pressure.”

British Glass says the new tax will be around 50 times higher for glass beverages (based on a 330ml bottle) than other materials.

However, the government has claimed the new tax will create a £10bn investment in the recycling sector over the next decade and see packaging producers, rather than the taxpayer, cover the costs of managing waste.

Trailblazing student wins STEAM prize An inspirational student has won a national award for breaking down barriers in her field.

Aurelia Brzezowska, 21, is a trailblazer in computer science at University of Staffordshire, dedicated to promoting diversity through her passion for the subject.

Aurelia was named “Young STEAM Personality of the Year” at the Inspirational Youth Awards, which shine a spotlight on young people aged 16-25 who are creating meaningful change in their communities.

Aurelia said: “This year, the awards went

national, so to be recognised on such a large scale for my volunteering and academic work to support students is incredibly meaningful.

“The ceremony was amazing, seeing so many inspirational young people around us was empowering. When my name was called out, my heart dropped and I was prouder than ever to represent the university.”

In high school, Auralia began mentoring young learners from lower socio-economic backgrounds and encouraging more girls to pursue STEAM subjects.

Aurelia received an Amazon Future Engineer bursary to support her BSc (Hons) Computer Science studies at University of Staffordshire and has continued her work to support others.

Aurelia co-founded the Women in STEM Society and led the Computing Society at the University. As a Department Representative for Computing, Aurelia has also advocated for better learning experiences, diversity and employability, driving a 30 per cent increase in student engagement and implementing improvements in key modules.

Thinktank names its new board Aston University’s The Sir Peter Rigby Digital Futures Institute has announced the make up of its new board.

The multidisciplinary research establishment was founded in February 2023 and was named after Sir Peter Rigby, one of the UK’s most respected and successful entrepreneurs and business leaders.

The 11 board members represent a wide range of industrial sectors and are joined by some from the public sector and an academic.

Heritage Week makes return A popular annual city heritage week is set to return in 2025 with the support of Birmingham Museums Trust, University of Birmingham and the National Trust, alongside the Birmingham Municipal Charity and the William A Cadbury Charitable Trust.

Birmingham Heritage Week, now in its 11th year, previously faced an uncertain future following the loss of financial support due to the city council’s cuts to funding for culture projects and arts development.

The city-wide festival will be held between 12 to 21 September, when visitors will have the opportunity to explore some of Birmingham’s most important industrial and cultural heritage buildings and unique outdoor spaces.

Over 10 days, activities will be taking place across Birmingham, with over a hundred different events, walks and tours to choose from.

The festival organisers are currently inviting submissions from organisations interested in taking part in this celebration of industrial and cultural heritage by planning an event or activity for Birmingham Heritage Week.

Professionals warned as interest rules change A leading West Midlands accountancy practice is warning legal professionals that potential changes to the rule around pocketing interest on client money could put some firms at risk of insolvency.

Emma Abbotts, accounts senior manager at Prime Accountants Group, says there is increasing scrutiny from the regulator, the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA), around the rules concerning how solicitors handle the interest accrued as a result of holding client funds.

Her comments follow a consultation launched by the SRA, which said law firms shouldn’t be able to profit from holding money on their clients’ behalf and there was no compelling evidence it was in the interest of the consumer.

The SRA is considering changes to its rules to prevent firms retaining this interest and Emma said recent work carried out by

Prime pointed to this becoming an increasingly important issue.

Some UK accountancy firms, including Prime, carry out SRA audits on behalf of their solicitor clients. This process gives the solicitors an impartial opinion.

‘The notion of a ‘fair sum’ is very open to interpretation’ A review of transactions is conducted annually to ensure the SRA accounts rules are being adhered to, and SRA rules are in place to protect client money held by the solicitors. At present, the SRA rules dictate solicitors must pay their clients a “fair” sum of interest earned on their money, but there is no legal definition of “fair” in practice.

Emma said: “It’s an ongoing debate which has gathered much more traction in the wake of interest rates rising.

“The notion of a ‘fair sum’ is very open to interpretation.

“What you or I would class as fair may be very different to a client. Historically this hasn’t been an issue with interest rates so low for so long, but now they're higher, there are concerns that solicitors are becoming profitable from interest earned as a result of holding client money in their accounts.”

Emma said that apart from the moral argument, it was vital for solicitors to consider the issue both from a cashflow perspective and the potential knock-on effect for their clients.

“What we are seeing are some examples where a business is presenting itself as profit-making from the services it offers but profits are hugely inflated after a significant cash inflow of interest earned on client funds.

If this is removed this could make things harder financially for the firm.”

The Law Society has estimated that firms could have earned as much as £27m in interest in the 2022-23 tax year.

“We want our solicitor clients and the wider industry to consider, if the regulator decides to change the rule, how this impacts on their cashflow and profitability to ensure they remain a strong and successful business that services their clients effectively,” added Emma.

Predicting which tariffs will apply to which country or region and when becomes a fool’s game so we can only take

Policy team breaks down tariffs

reater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce has released a briefing paper to help its members digest the impact of new tariffs imposed on goods imported to the US. President Donald Trump announced a string of tariffs on overseas imports, including 10 per cent on goods from the UK. And a blanket 25 per cent was imposed on cars imported to the US from overseas, in a blow to the automotive industry.

As a result, West Midlandsheadquartered Jaguar Land Rover announced a pause on shipping vehicles to the US.

The briefing paper from the GBCC’s policy team provides a detailed breakdown of the tariffs, while signposting local firms to the latest advice.

A snap poll by the British Chambers of Commerce revealed 62 per cent of UK firms with trade exposure to the USA say they will be negatively impacted by Trump’s tariffs, while 32 per cent said they will increase prices as a result.

Forty-four per cent believe the UK should seek to negotiate a closer trade relationship with the USA - and 43 per cent want closer trade with other markets.

Just under a quarter (21 per cent) think the UK should impose retaliatory tariffs.

Liberation Day is a loselose situation for everyone Greater Birmingham business leaders have urged the Government to do all it can to secure the best deal for Britain and support businesses impacted

by Donald Trump’s ‘Liberation Day’ tariffs.

President Trump announced a sweeping new set of tariffs, arguing that they will allow the US to flourish economically.

The UK is among a group of countries to have been imposed with a “baseline” 10 per cent on goods imported to the US. Key trading partners including the European Union (20 per cent) and China (54 per cent) were hit with their own custom tariffs.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer responded to the tariffs by vowing to “fight for the best deal for Britain” in negotiations.

“Nobody wins in a trade war, that is not in our national interest,” he said.

Emily Stubbs, head of policy at Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce, said: “This 20 CHAMBERLINK May 2025

is a ‘lose-lose’ situation for everyone and we urge the government to do all it can to provide practical support to UK businesses making difficult decisions today about trade with the US. “We also encourage Greater Birmingham firms to immediately start negotiations with their US customers on managing the impact of these tariffs, if their contacts allow.

“Longer term, they may want to explore alternative markets, especially the EU, CPTPP countries or those where we're expecting other trade deals to be made later this year.

“The Bank of England cited intensified uncertainty in global trade as one of the reasons to hold off on lowering interest rates last month.

They'll be carefully monitoring the impact of these tariffs, particularly on inflation and employment, as they consider future rate cuts.

“A global trade war would likely give a significant knock to UK GDP and that have

repercussions for the Chancellor's fiscal headroom – if that gets wiped out then we would be looking at either more spending cuts or more tax rises.

“The UK government must remain levelheaded and continue to work with the US administration to find a mutually beneficial agreement on tariffs and trade that provides certainty for both businesses and consumers on the future landscape for international trade.”

Bira warns of Chinese dumping Independent retail association Bira has warned of the increasing volume of Chinese products flooding the UK market via online platforms following the implementation of higher tariffs

by US president Donald Trump.

Andrew Goodacre, CEO of Bira Group, which includes Bira Direct, Retra (the trade association for independent electrical retailers) and the Association of Cycle Traders (ACT), said: “We were concerned about the volume of items from Chinese companies coming into the country before the tariffs chaos.

‘Billions of products every year are being sold through large marketplaces, entering the country duty-free’ “The thought of Chinese companies dumping even more goods through these channels, a real possibility, is a worry for large and small retailers alike.”

Bira, which works with 6,000 independent traders across the UK, said it was particularly concerned about the impact on independent retailers across Britain, who are already facing significant challenges in competing with online marketplaces that benefit from existing tax advantages.

“For many months we have been asking the government to review the current duty de-minimis – currently set at £135, which

allows products below this threshold to enter the country duty-free," Mr Goodacre explained.

“Billions of products every year are being sold through large marketplaces, entering the country duty-free and also avoiding VAT obligations.”

Beyond the economic impact, Bira emphasises that this is also a critical health and safety issue.

“Too many products sold online, especially electrical products, do not meet our own safety standards,” Andrew warned.

“This puts consumers at risk and undermines the efforts of legitimate retailers who invest in ensuring their products meet all necessary safety requirements.”

Bira is calling for immediate government action on three fronts: • Remove the de-minimis threshold entirely to ensure all imported goods are subject to appropriate duty • Enforce existing VAT regulations to prevent fraud by online sellers • Implement stricter enforcement of safety standards for all imported products “While customers may see lower prices in the short term, this will create an unfair marketplace, leaving bricks and mortar stores at an even greater disadvantage,” Andrew added.

“It also means that the government, while claiming to need income, will miss out on tax revenues in two ways, while presiding over the further demise of the high street.”

Firms still facing economic uncertainty Business leaders in Greater Birmingham have cautiously welcomed the unexpected economic expansion but remain concerned of the ‘eye watering’ cost pressures that firms face.

The economy expanded by 0.5 per cent in February, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), mainly due to the services sector having a strong month and a surprise boost in manufacturing and production.

Previously, the economists had only expected a growth of 0.1 per cent.

Raj Kandola, director of external affairs at the Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce, said: “The better than expected GDP results will have been welcomed by the Chancellor in the face of increasing global economic instability.

“Nevertheless, data from our latest Quarterly Business Report reveals that local businesses continue to face eye watering cost pressures as a result of the announcements made in the Autumn Budget and uncertainty caused by the new US administration.

“In the months ahead, the Chancellor will need to reassure businesses that she has a clear plan to unlock growth - driving export activity in new markets, unlocking firm level investment and reducing the cost of doing business needs to be at the heart of this strategy.”

Tot thriving after medical care A toddler is now thriving after lifesaving care at Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

Twenty-month-old Taylor Wilshire-Cox from Erdington has been through a lot, including multiple surgeries, after being born prematurely.

She developed serious health issues shortly after being born. She has short bowel syndrome (SBS) as a result of a twisted bowel and Necrotising Enterocolitis (NEC) which is when the lining of the intestine dies and prevents the body from absorbing nutrients.

Mum and dad Becky Wilshire-Cox and Andy Cox have praised the specialist care and support their daughter has received through her journey.

Taylor was born prematurely at the Women’s Hospital at just 29 weeks and three days during the summer of 2023.

‘The medical teams have saved her life. She wouldn’t be where she is now without them’ She went on to spend the first eight months of her life on wards at the Children’s Hospital, including time on the paediatric intensive care unit (PICU) and neonatal surgical ward (NSW).

She has had five major abdominal surgeries during her life, including her first at just twoweeks-old and a lifesaving procedure in July 2024 when laparostomy surgery meant she had her bowel in a bogota bag on the outside of her body.

During recovery, Taylor was paralysed for a weekend and recovered for over a week in PICU. Mum Becky said: “From the very beginning we received support from the teams with lots of advice at both hospitals. They did their medical jobs but also went beyond that by also comforting us. It was a very intense time for us, but the staff had such a positive impact. We are still in touch with some of them from the wards today.”

Dad Andy, said: “We knew quite early on we would be in the hospital with Taylor for a sustained period of time.

“We had confidence. We’d come in and she’d be cuddling the nurses and they’d look after

her. We had absolute faith in the medical professionals all the way as first-time parents we had a lot to figure out. We are so grateful and lucky to have the hospital and the experts “The medical teams have saved her life. She wouldn’t be where she is now without them.”

Dr Sue Protheroe, consultant paediatric gastroenterologist at the Children’s Hospital, has led on Taylor’s care but is one of many who have

supported her family throughout their journey.

She said: “It has been marvellous to see Taylor make such great progress since her discharge home. Taylor’s parents have been by her side constantly and dedicated to achieving the best for their lovely daughter. We’re grateful that her parents, Andy and Becky, have shared her journey in order to support other families who are starting out on theirs.”

Fundraisers take to the road for charity Fundraising petrol heads are hoping to clock up the miles for money to benefit a local children’s charity Molly Ollys as they gear up to take on an epic 1,200-mile car rally.

Kieran Kelley from Autotech Warwick Ltd and Nick Perkins from Wedgnock Motors, will each be heading up two of the five teams taking part in the Benidorm Bangers Road Trip.

Kieran is joined in his car by Riley Wright, from Warwick and Ben McIntosh from Stafford.

Nick, from Barford, is joined by Dave Reagan, from Coventry and Derek Fitzpatrick, from Leamington. Father and son teams make up the other vehicles, with

The five-day adventure, also known as Run To The Sun, will see the men follow a route from Dover through Caen, La Rochelle, Pau and Valencia before arriving in Benidorm.

They’ll also encounter tasks and challenges along the way to earn points for their team.

Kieran said: “We chose Mollys Ollys because most of us are fathers and they are a very good local cause. After meeting Rachel, the founder, it was quickly obvious that is who we wanted to support.

“This is our way to give back to the community, we do this totally self-funded, buying the cars, entry fees, vehicle repairs, also accommodation when away, so every penny we raise can go to the

greater good. If we can have a laugh and raise money for something good like Molly Ollys that will do me.”

Father-of two Nick, who will be driving a 1994 Mercedes, said: “Small charities such as this need as much support as they can get and if everyone does a little bit it makes a massive difference.”

Rachel Ollerenshaw established Molly Ollys, members of Solihull Chamber, with husband Tim in 2011, following the death of their eightyear-old daughter Molly from a rare kidney cancer.

The charity works to support children with terminal or life-limiting illnesses and their families and help with their emotional wellbeing.

Empowering girls through sport Sport Birmingham has announced it will host their inaugural Girls of Birmingham event later this year.

Taking place on Tuesday, 24 June 2025, the flagship event is a city-wide celebration of sport and physical activity, designed to inspire the next generation of young women to get active, build confidence, and feel empowered.

Set against the backdrop of Alexander Stadium, the event will bring together Year 7 girls from over 30 secondary schools across the city.

Taking place between 10am and 2.30pm, the day will be filled with inclusive and engaging activities led by a diverse range of local sport and physical activity organisations.

The aim of Girls of Birmingham is to break down barriers, promote positive relationships, and provide a supportive, empowering environment where girls can experience the joy of being active.

Throughout the day, participants will engage in a variety of activity stations, enjoy talks from female role models and take part in workshops designed to strengthen connections between schools, community groups, and local organisations.

Paul teams up with top hospitality firm Former Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce chief executive Paul Faulkner has joined Gala Events - one of the UK's leading corporate hospitality businesses - as an ambassador.

UVB team serve up hat-trick of challenge wins Unique Venues Birmingham (UVB) team member Vera Neves won three categories at the 2025 Venues of Excellence awards.

by Vera, who is based with Lee at UVB. Each year Venues of Excellence, the UK’s leading collection of venues, invites its members to enter a team into their Cook and Serve Challenge to showcase the venues’ outstanding food and drink teams.

The 2025 competition theme was “Inspiring Creativity through Conscious Choices” and centred on sustainability and zero waste, with the aim to challenge the competitors to create dishes that minimise environment impact while showcasing creativity, resourcefulness, and culinary skill.

Colmore Food Festival to return Colmore Business District (BID) has announced the official trader lineup for Colmore Food Festival 2025.

Reducing traffic to improve towns Independent retailers are experiencing a revival in areas where cars have been restricted, according to new evidence revealed in Bira’s latest High Street Matters podcast.

It shows how low traffic neighbourhoods in Birmingham and London have transformed congested roads into bustling community spaces, with businesses reporting significant shifts in trade patterns.

In Beyond Cars - Creating Vibrant High Streets Through Low Traffic Neighbourhoods, journalist Steve Dyson interviews key figures who have witnessed this transformation firsthand.

In Birmingham’s Kings Heath, Henry Poultney, of Grace and James, a neighbourhood wine bar and cheesemonger, describes how pedestrianising York Road has transformed his business model.

“The LTN has meant that York Road is a real destination, a real pleasant place for putting seats outside.”

Though the case studies highlight that their schemes remain works in progress, the podcast reveals that LTNs can play a crucial role in high street regeneration when properly implemented.

Bira CEO Andrew Goodacre said: “I think they are important for various reasons if you think about the need to reduce traffic from environmental perspective. The real danger is that the decision to create a low traffic neighbourhood is often driven without thinking about the businesses.

PR firm launches charity partnership A leading Midlands PR, communications and public affairs agency has announced a new charity partnership with a major regional grant-giving organisation.

PLMR’s offices in Birmingham and Coventry have selected Heart of England Community Foundation as their charity partner for the year.

The PLMR Group, which has its head office in Westminster, donates five per cent of net profits to philanthropic causes every year. For the first time, PLMR has nominated a ‘charity of the year’, and the group has chosen UK Community Foundations to benefit across the Midlands, London and the East of England, reflecting its office locations.

Heart of England Community Foundation is an independent grantmaking foundation which covers the West Midlands and Warwickshire, connecting people who care with causes that matter.

Primary schools in the West Midlands are being invited to take part in a charity art project that will bring a spectacular parade of bulls to Birmingham this summer.

As a sponsor of the Bulls in the City trail, Metro tramway in Birmingham is backing this creative initiative that will bring 40 vibrant, larger-than-life bull sculptures into the city.

Inspired by Birmingham’s iconic Bullring Bull, each sculpture will be individually designed to celebrate the city’s heritage while raising vital funds for Birmingham Hospice.

Metro is calling on young artists from schools in the region to help design a bull.

The winning artwork will be brought to life on a calf-sized sculpture, which will be gifted to the winner’s school—along with a £250 prize.

Plus, the budding artist and their classmates will enjoy an exclusive VIP trip to Metro’s Wednesbury depot.

Students’ design: A car for 2044

Hypercars inspired by nature A student who designed a high-performance car in a challenge set by McLaren was inspired by the shape of a diving peregrine falcon.

Second year BA (Hons) in automotive and transport design students at the University of Staffordshire were set a brief by McLaren’s designer David Short to design a hypercar for 2044.

The students took part in an intensive twoweek design sprint to generate and refine their ideas, from initial hand-drawn sketches to using CAD software and integrated AI to render their designs, as well as using more traditional skills such as tape drawings and building clay models.

They later unveiled their concepts at an exhibition in the university’s Catalyst Building.

Ethan Meekin, 20, from Manchester, designed a car powered by electric motors and inspired by a peregrine falcon.

He said: “To be given a live brief by a designer from a prestigious brand like McLaren is great.

We’ve had guidance from many different

professionals throughout the process so it has been a great opportunity.

"I wanted to go for something that hasn’t necessarily been seen before. There is almost no underside on my car and it has a glass cabin in a teardrop shape.

‘It is important on the course to have opportunities for students to engage with industry’ “I was inspired by a peregrine falcon diving because its body performs the perfect golden ratio shape for aerodynamics.”

Stosh Toews, who moved from Canada to study at Staffordshire, said: “This is pretty much the dream brief! To actually be working on a McLaren project and have them come to the exhibition is sick.

“If you think too much when designing, then you get something that is already there. I did sketches every 20 seconds and tried to get an idea out, something conceptual that I could bring back to a car.”

Richard Gilmartin, co-course leader for automotive and transport design, said: “It is important on the course to have opportunities for students to engage with industry and get feedback from professionals to expand their knowledge and skills.

“This was an exciting brief which has allowed the students to really push the boundaries.

“When you design something that goes very fast, you have to think about the proportions and about active aerodynamics. To do it well is really difficult but the students have done a fantastic job.”

Kick starting their careers: The aspiring Black lawyers

Support for aspiring lawyers Thirteen aspiring Black lawyers have been offered the opportunity to kickstart their careers in the legal profession after signing up to a pioneering mentoring programme run by Browne Jacobson.

The UK and Ireland law firm has launched the 2025 cohort of its award-winning REACH (race, equality and cultural heritage) mentoring programme.

Since being piloted in 2022, the scheme has supported 44 individuals, with 14 of those going on to secure employment within the business.

REACH aims to address the disproportionate under-representation of Black lawyers working in UK law firms, which stands at just three per cent, by growing, nurturing and creating a sustainable pipeline of future Black talent.

Uni shortlisted for six awards Birmingham Newman University has been shortlisted for six categories in the 2025 WhatUni Student Choice Awards (WUSCA), including University of the Year award.

Each of this year’s 13 students, aged 16 and over, will enrol on a six-month programme in which they are paired with a mentor from Browne Jacobson or Bupa, one of its partners.

Mentors will share their skills, knowledge and insights to help them gain an understanding of what it is like to work in the legal profession.

The programme also includes a week’s work experience placement in one of Browne Jacobson’s offices.

Founded in 2000, Commbus started with a mission to deliver a broad range of event services with a twist.

Law firm backs hospital charity The Birmingham office for European law firm Fieldfisher has announced Birmingham Children’s Hospital Charity as its charity for the next two years.

The new charity partnership forms part of Fieldfisher’s “One Firm Action” initiative, an annual company-wide programme supporting communities across the UK and Europe.

Launched in 2023, the initiative represents a strong commitment from the firm’s international network to help address local community issues and create a positive impact across the 12 countries it operates within.

As part of the programme, all of Fieldfisher’s 26 offices actively participate in fundraising efforts to support charities of their choice.

The Birmingham office has set a fundraising target of £50,000 for Birmingham Children’s Hospital Charity, and a schedule of events and activities is currently being planned by the firm's charity committee.

Fieldfisher’s initiative was one of the leadership pledges from managing partner Robert Shooter to empower colleagues to engage with various charitable causes across Europe and beyond.

The firm’s collective efforts have so far raised over £250,000, and with the partnership’s commitment to match funds, the total collective donation stands at £526,000 to date.

M6toll launches funding for mental health charities M6toll has launched its second quarterly theme for 2025 with a focus on mental health and are welcoming local charities and projects to apply for funding.

This is part of their ongoing commitment to supporting meaningful causes through the ‘In the Community’ scheme.

‘We know how much a strong, supportive community can positively impact mental health’ Local organisations dedicated to supporting individuals with mental health challenges can apply for funding boosts of up to £1,250, to help them deliver essential projects and initiatives that will make a positive contribution to the lives of people experiencing or recovering from mental illness.

This announcement comes ahead of Mental Health Awareness Week, organised by the Mental Health Foundation, which takes place from 12 to 18 May 2025.

The theme for this year’s awareness week is “Community”, reflecting the vital role that supportive communities play in enhancing mental health and wellbeing.

...and supports canal restoration M6toll has announced the second of three two-year charity partnerships with the Lichfield & Hatherton Canals Restoration Trust (LHCRT), as part of its Drive for Charity initiative, focusing on 'Community and Culture.’

The Restoration Trust is entirely volunteer-led and is dedicated to restoring the historic seven-mile Lichfield Canal, which was completed in 1797 but was abandoned in 1954 due to the decline of the national inland waterways network.

Their goal is to bring this significant waterway back to its former glory and recreate the gateway to the Birmingham Canal Navigations.

First responder charity receives new vehicle Multifleet Vehicle Management has delivered to a Midlands first responder charity its 14th life-saving vehicle.

The Solihull-based leasing company, which trades as runyourfleet, handed over the new Kia XCeed Sportswagon to the Arrive Alive charity.

The vehicle, which has been funded by donations made to Arrive Alive by its supporters, will now go on duty in the North Warwickshire area.

The Birmingham-based charity, founded by Debbie Roscoe following her youngest daughter Ellie’s life-

threatening case of measles in 2017, provides lifesaving vehicles for community first responder teams to attend 999 calls.

Debbie said: “We are delighted to have received what is now our 14th responder vehicle. This latest car will enable community first responders that we support in North Warwickshire to be available to attend emergencies.”

The new vehicle is the third to be delivered by runyourfleet, one of which it supplies free of charge in a sponsorship deal.

Wesleyan Foundation - the grant-giving programme of Birmingham-based specialist financial services mutual Wesleyan - has funded a new PhD studentship at Aston University to research ways to improve teacher wellbeing.

Thanks to the £70,000 donation, the new research student, Bridget GrenvilleCleave has been recruited to work on the Staff Wellbeing (SWell) project to design and develop interventions to improve wellbeing in highstress workplaces.

She is being supervised by Professor Rachel Shaw, Dr Laura Shapiro and Professor Leon Davies.

SWell was initially developed in partnership with Birmingham Children’s Hospital for paediatric critical care (PCC) staff, who work in a particularly stressful environment with high levels of burnout. The interventions were successfully piloted in 14 UK PCC units.

Creatives from Leipzig form lasting trade links Upbeat Germans want EU reset The German-British business community continues to be upbeat for their UK business activities, but global challenges and weaker economic growth are beginning to bite.

Therefore, German companies hope that the UK Government prioritises resetting its relationship with the EU. According to the recent spring survey of the GermanBritish Chamber of Industry & Commerce, approximately half of survey respondents view their own UK operations as performing positively or very positively, 34 per cent as stable, and 19 per cent as negatively.

These numbers paint a somewhat similar picture compared to the autumn of last year, suggesting that most companies continue to operate reasonably successfully in the UK. As a result, investment plans within the German-British business community have remained broadly unchanged, with one third aiming to expand their activities.

In contrast to the positive outlook for their own operations, the sentiment towards the overall development of the UK economy has continued to deteriorate compared to six and 12 months ago.

Dr Ulrich Hoppe (pictured), director general of the GermanBritish Chamber of Industry & Commerce, commented, "The survey results suggest that despite the deteriorating economic outlook, the UK continues to be a good place to do business, but global challenges loom large and a closer relationship with Europe is a crucial element in fostering growth.”

Leading film visual art and animation businesses from Leipzig Germany were able to build links with leading organisations in Birmingham during a trade mission.

Birmingham and Leipzig established a partnership in 1992 which led them to become twin cities.

The partnership has resulted in a formal agreement between the two cities which aims to foster cooperation and understanding through cultural, educational and economic exchanges.

Ten creative companies from Birmingham accompanied the Lord Mayor of Birmingham Councillor Ken Wood on a Birmingham delegation to Leipzig, and the reciprocal visit to Birmingham provided Leipzig creatives the opportunity to visit the city well known for its diverse and thriving creative and cultural scene.

The three-day trip, organised by Birmingham City Council in conjunction with partners West Midlands Combined Authority, West Midlands Growth Company, Department of Business and Trade, Greater Birmingham Chambers of

Accomplished duo take the reins as ABCC co-presidents

By Feron Jayawardene An award-winning business leader in education and an accomplished employment solicitor will take charge of the Asian Business Chamber of Commerce (ABCC) after being elected as copresidents.

Sapreena Kumari, CEO of SK Consulting, and Neelam Afzal, Solicitor and partner at Wildings Solicitors were appointed during the annual meeting.

The meeting at the Chamber’s 54 Hagley Road HQ in Edgbaston was hosted by ABCC director Anjum Khan. This is the first time in ABCC history that two women co-presidents have been appointed.

Before becoming co-presidents, both Neelam and Sapreena served as ABCC vice presidents from 2023.

Neelam Afzal specialises in employment law, advising businesses and individuals on a wide range of workplace-related legal matters.

With a deep understanding of employment rights and workplace disputes, Neelam has built a strong reputation for delivering practical and effective legal solutions.

One of the Midlands’ fastestgrowing legal practices has opened a new office in Cannock.

Davisons Law opened its 19th location on Mill Street, Cannock this month, further expanding its presence across the region.

This latest expansion follows the firm's largest recruitment drive in its history, launched in January, which created over 53 positions across its network of offices, including roles for Conveyancing Specialists, Solicitors, and legal support staff.

The new Cannock office is creating 20 plus new jobs in the local area.

New date announced for gala dinner event The Mel Evans MBE Foundation has announced a new date for its Marked Entertainer gala dinner.

It will now take place on Saturday, 18 October, at Edgbaston Stadium.

The Mel Evans MBE Foundation is the dedicated charity of the Cannock Chase Chamber of Commerce this year.

It honours the legacy of Mel Evans MBE, a champion Crown Green Bowler responsible for bringing the sport to TV with more than 100 caps for Staffordshire County.

The highlight of the event is set to be The Masked Entertainer performances, where all profits will be used into treatments for motor neurone disease.

Throughout the evening, guests will witness several well-known celebrities, disguised in amazing costumes, battle to be crowned best performer.

During each round of performances, guests will choose their favourite entertainer. At the end of each round, the person with the lowest votes will be revealed and eliminated.

The most highly rated performer at the end will be crowned the winner.

Guest celebrities include former Test cricketer Phil Tufnell, Christopher Biggins, Amanda Barrie, Daniel Brocklebank, and Peter Ash. The special guest of the event will be professional footballer, Marcus Stewart.

The initiative, led by the Burton & District Chamber of Commerce in partnership with East Staffordshire Borough Council, aims to strengthen business relationships across the area and provide a welcoming environment for idea-sharing, networking and mutual support.

Held every Monday from 10am to 2pm (excluding bank holidays), the hub invites businesses of all sizes and sectors to drop in, meet like-minded professionals, and explore new opportunities for collaboration.

“Amazing experience”: Tampa students in Burton

US students collaborate on town development plan A group of business students from Hillsborough Community College (HCC) in Tampa Bay, Florida, spent a week at Burton and South Derbyshire College (BSDC), participating in a collaborative project focused on the town’s development plans.

The students worked alongside BSDC’s Business Degree students on the Burton High Street Project, an initiative linked to the local council’s efforts to revitalise the town centre while preserving its rich brewing heritage.

The project encouraged students to apply their business knowledge to address real-world urban development challenges.

They explored ways to preserve Burton's historic brewery buildings, introduce new

amenities and create a vibrant, mixed-use community space.

Through research, engaging with local residents and analysing successful regeneration case studies, students gained valuable insights into the complexities of urban renewal.

Brandon Dean, a student from HCC said: "I’ve been really impressed by the college's advanced facilities and the variety of courses offered.

“This experience has helped me learn about community revitalisation, which I’ll definitely carry into my future career.

“Staying with a host family was also an amazing experience, allowing for a real cultural exchange and a deeper understanding of life in the UK.”

Lichfield Festival programme revealed A new dance show has been created exclusively for this year’s Lichfield Festival by Strictly Come Dancing star Neil Jones and headline acts will include The Unthanks and former Spandau Ballet frontman and celebrated solo artist Tony Hadley.

The series has been launched with three patients telling their stories the hearing difficulties in their lives, their hesitancy to get tested and how their lives have changed after treatment.

Business coach to offer tips on handling pressure A Sutton Coldfield business coach will deliver a forthcoming Chamber workshop designed to help small businesses thrive under pressure.

Clare Whalley, founder of Meta4 Coaching and former vice-president of the Royal Sutton Coldfield Chamber, is the special guest at the workshop “Thriving Under Pressure: Strategies for Small Business Success”.

Solihull at the centre of the esports boom Solihull is fast becoming a major centre for esports, key business and industry leaders were told at a summit to identify future growth opportunities in the fast-growing industry.

West Midlands Unwrapped, held at bp pulse LIVE (The NEC, Birmingham campus), brought local and regional stakeholders together to discuss the economic benefits and opportunities offered by the flourishing esports industry, and how partners could work together in the future.

The summit, part of the Game on Birmingham event series, featuring the Rocket League Championship Series (RLCS) 2025 Major Birmingham and the inaugural British Esports Cup, also took stock of education, careers and skills development, and heard from local students about their esports experiences.

Themes emerged around how the skills required to succeed in esports – not only the

more obvious digital skills, but also teamwork, collaboration and communication – can be utilised and help forge career pathways in tech, digital and STEM industries.

Councillor Ian Courts, leader of Solihull Council and lead member for business and the economy, opened the event and said: “On the back of two global events in the last 12 months, Solihull is fast becoming the place to be for esports.

“Not only do we have Solihull College and University Centre with its esports course supported by a new state-of-the-art esports lab, but we also have the best esports facilities in the country nearby at Warwick University.

Chamber Awards announce new categories for 2026 Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce has announced a revamp of its awards categories – providing more businesses with the chance to have their achievements recognised.

The flagship GBCC Awards – the largest celebration of business in the region – is set to return on 14 May, 2026, at the ICC in Birmingham.

Next year’s event will feature 11 new categories which will enable a wider range of firms to enter.

The most effective marketing activities are the ones that are anchored to specific business outcomes. Everything else is just expensive noise.

Accountancy tips for small businesses As a small business owner, it’s crucial that you get your finances in order and avoid making costly mistakes. Chamberlink offers five accounting tips that will help prevent financial mishaps.

Keep things separate It’s vitally important that you separate your business finances from your personal finances. Sector Focus The latest news from the sectors that matter to business Airport invests in terminal facilities Birmingham Airport is investing further in its infrastructure to ensure ease of travel through the airport. The next two projects, as part of its previously announced £100m capital spend up to 2033, will benefit those customers arriving through the airport.

The first stage is an additional baggage carousel to complement the existing six within its ‘north’ departure baggage make-up area.

The development of the extra carousel will be ready for the busy summer peak in a £4.2m investment.

The second part of development will benefit arriving customers in the south arrivals area. A full reconfiguration is underway that will expand the south immigration and the baggage reclaim areas before the summer peak.

This project will provide an increase from five to eight primary control points operated by UK Border Force and will future proof the introduction of E-gates.

Al Titterington, terminal operations director of Birmingham Airport, said: “Last year investment was focused on the outbound customer journey but with these projects the emphasis is providing the right welcome to the region.

“Increased baggage capacity and additional immigration desks will cater for the increased outbound demand.”

Birmingham Airport: Record number of passengers

Record year as airport welcomes 13m visitors Birmingham Airport had a record year in 2024/25 when over 13m passengers, a new peak for the transport hub, travelled through the terminal.

The figure was bolstered by a record March, in which over 950,000 passengers passed through the airport, a 3.8 per cent increase compared to the same period last year. Birmingham Airport remains on track to exceed this figure this year with close to 14m passengers forecast to travel

through the transport hub in 2025/26.

To accommodate this continual growth, the airport has announced further investment in both terminal facilities and infrastructure to improve the customer experience including an additional baggage carousel in the north terminal, a reconfiguration and expansion of the south immigration area and two further security screening lanes.

While operational areas and capacity are top of the

development list, the airport recognises the experience that it provides to its customers and as part of this a new food and beverage area, to cater for the increase in customers, is planned to open in 2026.

In addition, SSP Group, a leading operator of food and beverage outlets in travel locations, and Popeyes UK®, the UK’s fastestgrowing quick-service restaurant brand, are opening a Popeyes restaurant at Birmingham Airport.

Cross Country: Improved service

Timetable changes to reduce overcrowding Long-distance train operator CrossCountry has announced changes to timetables from May 2025 aimed at improving service reliability and reducing overcrowding on the CrossCountry network, in particular on the busy corridor between Reading and Newcastle via Birmingham, Doncaster and York.

From Sunday, 18 May, the new timetable will see changes to some journeys as part of the rail network’s twice-yearly timetable reviews, including extra services on weekdays as well as longer trains more often on long-distance routes from the south west to the north east, and from Manchester to the South Coast.

The new timetables have been uploaded to online systems, where customers can check journey planners for changes to any future journeys.

As part of the improvements, an additional 28,000 seats per week will be delivered as a further nine extra trains are added to CrossCountry’s long-distance Voyager fleet.

Shiona Rolfe, managing director at CrossCountry, said: “We know customers rely on us to get to where they need to be. Our May 2025 timetable update aims to improve reliability and comfort levels across the country, as well as helping more people to leave the car at home and take the train.”

The new timetable arrives as CrossCountry’s Class 170 “Turbostar” trains continue a rolling programme of refurbishment, delivering brighter and more comfortable journeys for passengers using CrossCountry’s interregional routes.

MediMatch poised for growth: Jonathan Tyson

Investment for dental labs MediMatch Group, a network of dental laboratories across the UK and Europe, has successfully secured a multimillion-pound private equity investment from Queens Park Equity (QPE) to accelerate its growth and expansion plans – with the help of Midlands law firm Shakespeare Martineau.

MediMatch Group provides dental lab products and services for both NHS and private practices.

From acrylic dentures to intraoral scanners, the group utilises the latest in dental technology and training to help dental practices maximise business potential.

Jonathan Tyson, partner at Shakespeare Martineau, who led the deal, said: “Our team worked closely with Hugo and his team to ensure the terms of the transaction allowed for the future to be a healthy mix of entrepreneurial flair and accelerated but controlled growth.

Bank seeks partnership with 10 UK universities As NatWest celebrates the 10th anniversary of its Accelerator and its Birmingham hub, the bank has announced its ambition to partner with up to 10 UK universities to open new business accelerators in the next three years.

Marking the 10th anniversary of the Accelerator, NatWest is announcing its ambition to significantly expand its support to UK businesses by offering 10,000 entrepreneurs the chance to join its Accelerator community in 2025, while setting out a long-term strategy to support the UK’s growth goals through new university partnerships.

NatWest’s Accelerator is recognised as a leading entrepreneurial network for businesses across the UK. Since the programme was founded in Birmingham in 2015, the bank has grown its accelerator hubs to 12 sites across the UK. The Birmingham hub, which is based at NatWest’s offices in St Philips Place, has supported 755 businesses, raising £28m investment and has created 480 jobs.

In the next stage of its expansion, NatWest will be partnering with up to 10 UK universities to open new business accelerators in the next three years.

To celebrate 10 years of its Accelerator programme, NatWest is also launching a new £1m pitching competition to reward big ideas and accelerate UK small business growth. Acquisition supported by UKSE An experienced company director has acquired an architectural firm with support from business investment specialist UKSE. Director Daniel Wicks secured six-figure funding from UKSE to help him acquire MDG Architects from outgoing owner and managing director Darrel Smallman.

Founded in 1994, MDG Architects is a Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Chartered Practice based in Birmingham, with offices in the Jewellery Quarter.

They say the management buyout will secure the long-term future of the company and its 10 employees.

Following the acquisition, Daniel, who joined the MDG team in 2017, has taken on the role of managing director, while Darrel will continue to support the business under a

multi-year consultancy role.

Metal stars shine at awards The leading stars of the metal industry were recognised with a manufacturer of vehicle structures for the automotive sector securing the main award.

G-TEM, which works with many of the major car makers, was named as the Confederation of British Metalforming’s (CBM) ‘Company of the Year’ at its dinner at The Council House in Birmingham.

Judges praised the Gloucester-based business for its significant growth, clear commitment to upskilling, innovation and for playing a critical role in retaining high level auto work within the UK. More than 200 industry leaders also saw Sertec Group claim the HSE initiative of the year for “it’s all about the people” campaign that has reduced accidents on site by 43 per cent.

Metal pressing specialist Brandauer took the energy efficiency title for its factory re-organisation that has seen it cut its carbon footprint, boost productivity by 26 per cent and achieve savings of £300,000.

This year saw the introduction of the employee engagement award, with Steel & Alloy Gonvarri Industries winning the inaugural accolade.

Deal to build pioneering green cement factory Power Minerals Limited (PML), based in Sutton Coldfield, has signed a pioneering 20-year joint venture agreement with Drax, the UK’s biggest power supplier.

They will develop a state-of-theart factory to process millions of tonnes of legacy ash into supplementary cementitious material (SCM), which is a key ingredient in low carbon green cement.

The ground-breaking investment will build a new facility near Drax Power Station in Yorkshire, to process coal ash for use in green cement and concrete – stopping millions of tonnes of CO2 being released into the atmosphere.

The new facility will be located next to the power station site on land leased from Drax.

Under the agreement PML will construct, own and operate the new facility, while Drax will sell its legacy pulverised fuel ash (PFA) to the joint venture as well as provide power to the site, in addition to sharing the profits of the joint venture’s sales of SCM. Production is expected to begin by the end of 2026, with the factory having an initial annual production capacity of 400,000 tonnes.

The production of cement contributes around eight per cent of global CO2 emissions annually. Over

the duration of the project, PML estimates the utilisation of PFA from Drax can reduce emissions of CO2 by a minimum of six million tonnes, compared to utilising conventional cements.

‘This is a landmark deal not only for Drax, but for the UK construction industry’ PML managing director Nigel Waldron, a former president of Royal Sutton Coldfield Chamber of Commerce, said: “We are proud to have pioneered the use of ashes from Drax for more than 20 years, and now we are delighted to be a part of this major investment, securing a long-term future for our business and our relationship with Drax for decades to come.”

Lee Dawes, Drax’s chief operations officer, said: “This is a landmark deal not only for Drax, but for the UK construction industry. Cement production is one of the most carbon intensive processes in the world and through this partnership, we will be able to help the construction industry cut its carbon emissions in the years ahead.

“Drax Power Station is integral to the country’s energy security and

now through this new agreement it can play a further role in reducing carbon emissions in UK construction as well.

“The opportunity to sell large volumes of PFA from Drax Power Station as part of a long-term JV is another way in which we can realise incremental value from the site whilst helping to reduce carbon emissions. It is an exciting time for Drax as we continue to develop options for long-term investment in the site, including BECCS and a data centre.”

Nils Jansen, head of cementitious materials at PML’s parent company, EP Power Minerals GmbH, said: “This substantial investment and its projected returns represent a gamechanger not only for PML, but for the entire EPPM cementitious materials business.

"This positions us to become the leading player in the UK fly ash market for the foreseeable future.”

Ash from the power station was historically deposited at the nearby Barlow Mound.

The mound will be retained at its current height along the west and southwest of the site to continue to protect the views of local residents.

The remainder of the mound is to be extracted down to surrounding ground levels and then restored.

Team digs deep to give back The Calthorpe Estates team swapped the office for the outdoors as they volunteered at the Birmingham Settlement’s Nature & Wellbeing Centre, helping to enhance its eco-friendly community space at the heart of the city.

Working under bright spring sunshine, the Calthorpe team got hands-on across the centre’s unique three-acre green space neighbouring Edgbaston Reservoir.

One group focused on extending a log-lined path by 25 metres, creating a safe and sustainable walkway that will connect the outdoor Amphitheatre to the centre’s soon-tolaunch no-cost community Forest School.

The team dug out and levelled the ground, laid protective tarpaulin, and carefully positioned logs, sourced from felled trees across the site, to complete the pathway.

Meanwhile, a second group revitalised the centre’s community composting area by turning and aerating all nine compost boxes, sieving mulch and giving the boxes a fresh coat of paint to support the site’s ongoing environmental and educational initiatives.

Region’s Euro robotics coup Cities win right to stage top forum worth £1.5m Birmingham has beaten several other major cities to stage the most influential forum of the robotics community in Europe at the ICC in 2027.

The 18th edition of the European Robotics Forum (ERF), from 1 to 5 June, 2027, is estimated to be worth £1.55m for Birmingham and the wider West Midlands’ visitor economy, The city beat European destinations including Belgrade, Brussels, Tallinn and Zurich for the right to host the event, which will attract more than 1,500 international engineers, researchers, investors, entrepreneurs and policy makers to the city.

The Birmingham bid was won by leading ambassadors in the region from the University of Birmingham and the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) in Coventry with the support of the Birmingham and West Midlands Convention Bureau, part of the West Midlands Growth Company, and the ICC Birmingham.

The bid attracted more than 50 letters of support, including from the Minister of State for Science, Research and Innovation, Lord Patrick Vallance, Birmingham City Council and the West Midlands Combined Authority.

Tenth month of placement decline The latest KPMG and REC UK Report on Jobs: Midlands survey, compiled by S&P Global, indicated that permanent placements in the Midlands decreased for the 10th straight month in March.

The rate of contraction quickened from February and was sharp overall. Temp billings fell at a rate that, though modest, was the most pronounced in a year.

The sustained fall in hiring activity contributed to further steep increases in candidate availability for both permanent and temporary roles in March.

Turning to vacancies, demand for both permanent and short-term staff fell at notably softer rates than those seen in February. At the same time, recruiters signalled slightly stronger increases in starting salaries and temp pay.

Permanent placements fell in the Midlands for the 10th consecutive month in March. The rate of decrease quickened from February and was sharp overall.

Employment costs are still a concern Business leaders in Greater Birmingham say the rising cost of employment remains a major challenge for firms, despite a decrease in regional unemployment and an easing of wage growth.

Latest figures reveal unemployment in the West Midlands fell by 0.2 per cent in the three-month period to February, while employment rose by 0.1 per cent.

Emily Stubbs, head of policy at Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce, said: “As wage growth continues to outpace inflation, and employer national insurance hikes come into effect, the rising cost of employment is a major challenge for employers across the UK. “In Greater Birmingham, our latest surveying suggests that more than half of firms are anticipating needing to raise their prices, citing taxation as their primary concern.

“It will be some time before we fully understand the long-term impact of employer national insurance increases on jobs, investment and the extent to which businesses can absorb and adjust to rising costs.

“The government must prioritise easing these mounting cost pressures on businesses, to enable investment and unlock economic growth.”

Awards honour for hardworking students Four exceptional students have been recognised by a leading awards organisation for their dedication and achievements at a ceremony in the House of Commons.

The Keith Fletcher Memorial prize awards were presented to the Access to Higher Education (HE) students by Kevern Kerswell, group CEO of Chamber members AIM Qualifications and Assessment Group.

Now in its 14th year, the prize honours the achievements of Access to HE students who have demonstrated outstanding academic performance and commitment to their studies.

Named in memory of Keith Fletcher, a passionate advocate for adult learning, the prize continues to celebrate learners who have overcome significant challenges to succeed.

The Access to HE Diploma is a qualification designed to prepare students for university study by providing relevant subject knowledge and developing academic skills.

Elizabeth Histed won the outstanding academic achievement award while Paolo Cruz was highly commended. An outstanding commitment to study was awarded to Sheree O’Neil with Melika Ronnie highly commended.

Mayor puts STEM jobs in focus WMG Academy Trust, which operates in Solihull and Coventry to encourage young people to study science, technology, engineering and maths, hosted Richard Parker, the Mayor of the West Midlands Combined Authority, to its Solihull Academy for a round table event focused on the challenges young learners face when entering employment.

The event served as a platform to highlight the effectiveness of WMG Academy Trust's industryled curriculum in preparing students for future careers.

The highlight was a dynamic round table discussion featuring four current T-Level students – Grace Palmer, Millee Sondh, Oscar Mosley and Ethan John – alongside two accomplished Alumni: Samuel Austin, now working at Galldris, and Edward Dunster from Vanguard Sustainable Transport.

The discussion was chaired by Andy Dillow, COO at Springpod, who partner with employers and educational institutions, plus input from industry representatives from the West Midlands Combined Authority.

Summer fun with B:Music B:Music, the Birmingham music charity responsible for Symphony Hall and Town Hall, has launched its summer programme for 2025 which includes comedy, live music, dance and spoken word on its two worldfamous stages.

Among highlights will be Sophie Ellis-Bextor returning to Symphony Hall for a night of dance-pop anthems and pure energy in an electrifying live show (2 June). And Macy Gray is back to captivate the Symphony Hall audience with her unmatched style and emotional depth in a long-awaited return concert (28 June).

There is plenty of live music to choose from, with global household name Aled Jones, and five-time Grammy winner Robert Cray gracing the Town Hall stage in June. And July marks a return of Strictly Come Dancing favourites Dianne and Vito perform their show Red Hot and Ready, as well as a live edition of the hugely popular international podcast The Grade Cricketer featuring cricketing legend Sir Jimmy Anderson.

Tim Minchin, the singer-songwriter, pianist, comedian, actor, musicaltheatre composer-lyricist and soft-hearted provocateur, comes to Symphony Hall with his new show celebrating the 20th anniversary of his explosive arrival onto the British comedy scene (9 June, 9-10 July).

Ashley Allen & Friends play one of Gospel’s most iconic albums- The Rebirth of Kirk Franklin (12 June).

Making a visit to Birmingham as part of just three UK dates, Bill Murray, a legend of the silver screen, alongside cellist Jan Vogler, pianist Vanessa Perez, and violinist Mira Wang, bring their New Worlds tour to Symphony Hall (25 June).

Rep adds more productions Birmingham Rep has announced two additional productions for its 2025/26 season of drama, thrillers and premieres.

Continuing The Rep’s recent bout of National Theatre Live screenings, The Rep will be hosting a screening of Tennessee Williams’ timeless masterpiece A Streetcar Named Desire starring Gillian Anderson (Sex Education), Vanessa Kirby (The Crown), and Ben Foster (Lone Survivor), to be shown on Monday 16 June.

Hippodrome announces new shows for 2025 and beyond Birmingham Hippodrome has announced a line-up of new productions on sale for 2025 and beyond.

Among the highlights will be a production from the writers of TV’s Horrible Histories, Gerard Foster and Richie Webb, No Such Things as Wolves (Sat 6 Dec 2025 – Sun 4 Jan 2026) will be the second production in Birmingham Hippodrome’s My First Musical series.

Following a record-breaking run in London, The Lightning Thief – The Percy Jackson Musical (Tue 24 Feb – Sat 28 Feb 2026) comes to Birmingham in February 2026.

In March 2026, The National Theatre’s Olivier Awardwinning smash hit Dear England (Tue 10 Mar – Sat 14 Mar 2026) will tell the story of Gareth Southgate’s revolutionary tenure as England manager.

The Royal Shakespeare Company’s smash hit production of Matilda The Musical (Wed 1 Jul – Sun 2 Aug 2026), based on the Roald Dahl book, will come to Birmingham Hippodrome in July 2026.

Continuing the Hippodrome’s commitment to showcasing new works, the Patrick Studio will host a series of new musicals later this year.

Birmingham Hippodrome’s new musical theatre department have announced their Edinburgh Fringe debut with original climate crisis musical, Hot Mess. The new production will arrive at the Fringe this summer for its world premiere.

The Business of Sport Charity launches Rise Up challenge Sport 4 Life UK has launched Rise Up 2025, a month-long campaign set to transform the lives of young people across the West Midlands.

This initiative invites individuals, teams, and communities to take on a daily challenge – moving 2.5km each day throughout May – and to raise vital funds that support pathways into education, employment, and training for young people facing barriers.

Participants are encouraged to walk, run, cycle, or even swim 2.5km every day during May. The deadline for registration is 9 May. Together, Sport 4 Life UK are aiming to cover 25,150 kilometres – one for every young person currently out of work, education, or training in the region.

Each kilometre completed generates £1, with a fundraising goal

of £80 per participant. In addition to the challenge, Sport 4 Life UK are hosting a Sports Day on Thursday, 15 May for an energising, team-based event at Avery Fields Sports & Events, Birmingham.

Stadium software to help save lives Landmark deal: Partnership with Vertu

Bears Women agree landmark shirt deal Bears Women have signed a landmark partnership with leading automotive retailer Vertu to become the team’s first front-of-shirt sponsor.

Vertu – which has more than 200 dealerships across England and Scotland – has agreed a contract to front Bears Women’s Vitality Blast and Metro Bank One Day Cup shirts in their debut 2025 season.

The company is no stranger to cricket having partnered with Somerset, Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire but it’s their first foray into prime position shirt sponsorship.

Vertu owns nearby Bristol Street Motors – which will soon be rebranded under the Vertu banner – and chief executive Robert Forrester said he’s excited by the opportunities the partnership promises.

Warwickshire County Cricket Club has introduced potentially lifesaving software across its Edgbaston stadium IT systems to intercept searches relating to selfharm or suicide.

The club has partnered with R;pple Online Safety to deploy its crisis intervention tool on more than 100 staff laptops and throughout the ground’s wi-fi connectivity.

When a user searches for harmful content, R;pple discreetly intervenes, guiding them through a breathing exercise and signposting to free, 24/7 mental health support services and resources.

Warwickshire is the first county club in England and Wales to adopt the technology on both laptops and wi-fi.

Edgbaston safeguarding manager Tom Cunningham-Smith said: “This is a subject close to my heart. Before joining Warwickshire, I worked in child protection teams for the police and witnessed the tragedy of child self-harm and suicide too often.

“We’re working in partnership with R;pple and our official IT

provider Intercity to help protect staff and youngsters in our academy from accessing for suicide or self-harm material.

“There is no evidence that such phrases have been searched for on our systems. That’s not why we’re introducing it. We know that suicide is the number one cause of death for young people so we want to do all we can to help children or young adults who may benefit from mental health support.”

Joanne Santos from Intercity – Warwickshire’s official IT partner – said: “The safeguarding tool will be enabled on all corporate devices and across Edgbaston’s 170 Wi-Fi access points for full coverage in and around the stadium.

“Intercity is proud to partner on this scheme to support workplace mental health and help spread the message that people are not alone at the time of crisis.

“The R;pple tool integrates seamlessly as a browser extension or onto Wi-Fi networks, offering invisible yet effective protection without collecting personal data.

“It’s important we do what we can to help keep people safe.”

Spend less time at work.

Having spent 30 years in policing, I can adapt to most things. I was surprised at how challenging managing a small business has been.

Featuring dance battles, rap showcases, workshops, exhibitions and immersive performances from all four pillars of Hip-Hop: breakin’, graffiti, DJ’ing and MC’ing, as well as other dance styles and art forms, B-SIDE HipHop Festival promises to be the ultimate celebration of culture, art and community.

The festival will take place from 30 May to 1 June across Birmingham Hippodrome, Southside and Bullring & Grand Central.

An array of events kick-off the free festival on Friday 30 May, drawing artists and fans together to celebrate the rich history and evolution of Hip-Hop. Birmingham Hippodrome’s Young Community Takeover event will take place in the daytime, plus the festival dance workshop programme in the evening.

On Saturday, 31 May, the festival expands onto the streets of Southside with dance competition qualifiers, performances, a block party with resident DJs, Fluxcon mini convention, pop-up skateboarding, roller skating and a community basketball slam.

Break Mission Worldwide and Queer-Side Dance Championships culminate on Sunday 1 June with the finals taking place in Bullring & Grand Central, featuring incredible talent from the UK and beyond, alongside high-energy concrete battles.
