Constant change is hampering business Change is never a welcome phenomenon, least of all in business.

But at the moment we are getting it in spades. The miasma of politics at Birmingham City Council has been resolved with Liberal Democrat Roger Harmer forming a minority administration alongside the Greens and Better Birmingham Independent Group.

Mr Harmer, Birmingham’s first Liberal Democrat leader, promises “leadership that is steady, pragmatic, and unwavering in its focus on the issues that matter most to residents”.

With a coalition of so many disparate philosophies there is a mix that has toxic possibilities and there is a risk of chaos.

Let’s hope not.

As Greater Birmingham Chamber CEO Henrietta Brealey says it is essential that this coalition “provides clear, stable and collaborative leadership to restore confidence and enable the city's success”.

Our members and in-house experts are continually aiming to improve the fortunes of business and as Henrietta says: “As the city’s leading, apolitical voice of business, we look forward to working with the new leadership to accelerate progress and economic growth.”

And, of course, down at Whitehall there is much speculation over what an Andy Burnham-led government would look like.

Again, Chamber chief Henrietta has weighed in with a few pertinent thoughts, pointing out that six Prime Ministers in 10 years hardly represents the sort of stability business craves.

And she points out that it is business that creates the jobs and growth that ultimately funds public services, which are predicted to enjoy a windfall under a more left-leaning administration expected to be formed under the Burnham wing.

So it’s probably unlikely that reducing the business tax and red tape burdens will be at the top of his priority list even though these issues are a consequence of government policy.

They are stifling business growth and if that is accepted in Whitehall and Victoria Square it will be a start.

Don’t hold your breath.

New format will make awards more inclusive G

reater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce (GBCC) have unveiled a bold revamp of their flagship business awards programme – with a new format designed to give businesses a greater chance of recognition.

The new format – under the umbrella of the Greater Birmingham Business Awards – has been designed to shine a brighter spotlight on businesses across the whole GBCC network, while giving firms two chances at recognition from one initial application.

‘The Greater Birmingham Business Awards represent a bold new chapter in how we celebrate success across our region’ Under the refreshed model, businesses will enter via one of three regional awards programmes – Birmingham & Sutton Coldfield, Solihull or Staffordshire Gateway (covering Lichfield & Tamworth, Burton and Cannock Chase).

Gold, silver and bronze winners from those regional awards will then be automatically shortlisted for the Greater Birmingham Business Awards 2027, with no need to complete a second full application.

Instead, regional finalists must then submit a short video entry before competing for Chamber-wide honours.

Applications for the regional awards are set to open in September, with entries closing in January 2027.

Regional awards celebrations will take place in Solihull in May, 2027, followed by Birmingham & Sutton Coldfield and Staffordshire Gateway in June, 2027.

The Greater Birmingham Business Awards will then take place on 7 October, 2027, at the ICC in Birmingham city centre.

Businesses cannot apply directly for the Greater Birmingham Business Awards and must enter through the regional awards first.

The Asian Business Chamber of Commerce and Future Faces will retain their own standalone awards dinners, although ABCC members can still enter the main Greater Birmingham Business Awards programme via the regional awards.

The Chamber says the new approach is intended to make the awards more open, inclusive and reflective of business achievement across every part of the region.

Henrietta Brealey, chief executive of the GBCC, said: “The Greater Birmingham Business Awards represent a bold new chapter in how we celebrate success across our region. Designed to uncover and champion the very best of our business community, the programme will showcase the hidden gems and household names making an impact – first locally, then regionally.

“This is about more than a single night of celebration. With one application offering two

“The judging will focus on merit, contribution and achievement – not the size of a business.”

...and you can help steer our events Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce members can play a key role in helping shape the group’s future events – thanks to a wide-ranging survey.

The Midlands’ premier business organisation has launched the survey across its membership to gauge feedback on its variety of events.

And members who take part could help themselves to a £50 Amazon voucher – with a prize draw on offer for entrants. The West Midlands business group is urging members to provide feedback on its events programme to help inform its future strategy.

The survey will run till 10 July and is open to all, even if they have not attended a Chamber event.

Insights from last year’s survey

were used to expand the events offering including a new addition called the 3 O’Clock Club, aimed at developing cross-sector collaboration, which has seen very positive feedback.

Other changes include offering events at more varied times to make them more accessible, and a full refresh of the upcoming awards programme.

Chambers events manager Marcella Meehan said: “Members are at the heart of all our events.

“The changes we introduced to our programme following last year’s event survey all stemmed from member feedback and have led to better engagement. We want to ensure our events hit the mark for all our members, so learning their feedback is so valuable in

shaping our upcoming events calendar.”

The Chambers run over 220 events a year across nine divisions, from networking to educational workshops, awards, expos and policy-related events.

They are free for members to attend and the business group is keen to offer the most beneficial events to members, providing a range of opportunities to enable them to connect, support and grow.

Region mourns business leader Leading West Midland business figures have paid tribute to Dipak Shelat, a stalwart of the region’s Asian business community linked to the Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce (GBCC) for more than 35 years, who has passed away.

Dipak was the first manager of the Institute of Asian Businesses after the group launched in the aftermath of the Handsworth riots in the mid1980s, and went on to leave an indelible mark on the region’s Asian business community over several decades.

‘Dipak played an instrumental role in establishing the IAB in 1987 and dedicated nearly three decades of service to the Chamber’ Nasir Awan, past president of both the GBCC and the Asian Business Chamber of Commerce, said: “Dipak was a good friend and colleague who was involved with the IAB since its inception in 1987. His commitment and service was much valued. We are saddened by his loss and send our sympathies to his family.”

Katrina Raipuri, ABCC manager, said: “We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Dipak, a founding figure of the Asian business 6 CHAMBERLINK July/August 2026

community in the UK and a valued former director of the IAB, now the Asian Business Chamber of Commerce. Dipak played an instrumental role in establishing the IAB in 1987 and dedicated nearly three decades of service to the Chamber, helping to shape its growth and impact until his retirement in 2014.”

Dipak joined the IAB on its formation in 1987 under the chairmanship of Om Parmar, and the

organisation’s aim was to offer professional advice and assistance to Asian businesses, many of whom were located in inner-city areas.

“It was felt that giving assistance to such businesses would help improve the social fabric of some of Birmingham’s most deprived areas.”

Dipak eventually stepped down to pursue family commitments, focusing his energies with wife Meena on fostering.

Paul ‘humbled’ by appointment Paul Faulkner, former Birmingham Chambers of Commerce (GBCC) and Aston Villa chief executive, is among 10 new Deputy Lieutenants appointed to serve the West Midlands.

The appointments bring the number of Deputy Lieutenants supporting the LordLieutenant, as His Majesty The King’s personal representative in the West Midlands, to 77.

The new appointments come from a range of backgrounds including community and charitable work, education, healthcare, major events and business.

The duties of Deputy Lieutenants include supporting official royal visits, representing the Lieutenancy at citizenship ceremonies in each local authority area, supporting the Armed Forces – particularly reserve and cadet forces – and encouraging charitable and voluntary activity, alongside local initiatives that benefit communities.

‘I look forward to continuing to champion the region and the brilliant people who live and work here’ They will also help promote nominations for the Honours system, The King’s Award for Voluntary Service, The King’s Award for Enterprise and the Young Active Citizen’s Award.

Mr Faulkner is the co-founder of his own advisory business, Element45 and vice-chairman of Barclays Bank in the Midlands.

Paul said: “I am genuinely humbled and incredibly proud to have been appointed as a Deputy Lieutenant for the West Midlands.

“The West Midlands means an awful lot to me.

Since first arriving in Birmingham 20 years ago I have built a number of careers here, developed networks of great contacts and dear friends, raised a family and always tried to 'do my bit' and make a positive difference to the regional community and people around me.

“As a Deputy Lieutenant I look forward to continuing to champion the region and the brilliant people who live and work here.”

Other new Deputy Lieutenants include: • Henriette Breukelaar – regional director for the West Midlands at the Canal and River Trust, and trustee of the Birmingham Hospice • Martin Brostoff – general counsel at the Boparan Group and chairman of Trustees for Birmingham Jewish Community Care • Dr Sarb Clare – acute medical consultant at Midland Metropolitan University Hospital in Birmingham, and president of the West Midlands Physicians Association • Professor Zoe Radnor – interim deputy vicechancellor academic at Aston University • Nicola Turner – chief executive of United by 2022.

…and an honour for Beverly too Trailblazing civic leader and businesswoman Beverly Lindsay (pictured) has been named a Dame in the King’s Birthday Honours List.

Dame Beverly, a member of Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce (GBCC) Council and Global Chamber committee, is honoured for her services to the West Midlands and charity.

She was among 23 people from the West Midlands to feature in the King’s birthday list – with recipients recognised for contributions to business, health, education, policing, sport and charity.

Beverly arrived in Birmingham from Jamaica in the 1960s to complete her secondary education and worked in nursing, midwifery and the community before setting up her own travel business, Diamond Travel.

She has continued to champion the Afro Caribbean community, becoming the first Afro Caribbean woman president of Birmingham Rotary Club.

She received an OBE in 2011 and became a Deputy Lieutenant in 2013 - serving 10 years, the last three of which she was Vice Lord Lieutenant.

Henrietta Brealey, CEO of the GBCC, said: “Dame Beverly’s story is truly inspirational. From arriving in Birmingham from Jamaica as a young woman to becoming one of the region’s most respected civic leaders, she has blazed a trail with determination, grace and an unwavering commitment to helping others.

“Through her entrepreneurial approach, tireless charitable work and decades of service to the West Midlands, Dame Beverly has made an extraordinary contribution to business and civic life.

“We are proud to have her as a valued member of our Chamber Council and Global Chamber committee and delighted that her outstanding service has been recognised in this way.”

Party tribute for retiring industry stalwart

More than 80 business leaders and public figures from across the Midlands gathered at a networking party to pay tribute to retiring Crowe UK partner Johnathan Dudley.

Dudley is currently National Head of Corporate SME Business at Crowe and will have spent 38 years at the audit, tax, advisory and consulting firm by the time he retires at the end of June.

Guests gathered at Crowe’s Birmingham office at One Colmore Row included Cllr Zaker Choudhry, the Lord Mayor of Birmingham, and former West Midlands elected mayor, Andy Street.

Ross Prince, managing partner of Crowe in the Midlands and South West, paid tribute to Dudley’s commitment to helping businesses and business leaders across the

region over the last four decades.

He explained how Dudley had always had a strong reputation across the region for his passion about manufacturing and its importance to the UK economy.

For many years, he has run a regular survey of manufacturers, using the output to develop the “Manifesto for Manufacturing” and to continue to lobby on the sector’s behalf.

Johnathan was named “Business Ambassador 2026” at the Greater Birmingham Chamber Awards, and “Innovation Thought Leader (Individual)” at the 2025 Innovation Awards.

He said: “It was great to see so many people turn out to our summer cocktail party, and I was humbled to have so much focus on my forthcoming retirement.”

President’s Focus Sarah Griffiths, president of Future Faces Chamber of Commerce, firmly believes that Birmingham’s greatest asset is its people – and its young people are leading the way. At the heart of that, Sarah believes, is Future Faces and she asks of business in the city: If your young people are not members yet, ask yourself why.

H

ere’s a statistic I never tire of telling people Birmingham is the youngest major city in Europe. With nearly 40 per cent of our population under the age of 25 and a median age of just 34 years, around six years below the national average, our city is brimming with youthful energy, ambition and potential.

That is something every single one of us should be incredibly proud of.

With over 1.18 million residents, five universities producing around 25,000 graduates every year, and a graduate retention rate of 46 per cent, Birmingham is attracting young talent and keeping it.

‘Future Faces exists to network, develop and recognise the next generation of leaders across Greater Birmingham’ Our city is one of the most diverse in Europe too, with people from 187 nationalities calling it home. That combination of youth, diversity and opportunity is what makes Greater Birmingham such a special place to live, work and build a career.

But having a young population is only part of the story. What matters is what we do with it, how we nurture that talent, give young professionals the tools they need to thrive, and ensure they feel seen, valued and supported.

That is exactly where Future Faces comes in.

As the largest young professional network in the region, with almost 600 members from more than 20 sectors, Future Faces exists to network, develop and recognise the next generation of leaders across Greater Birmingham.

What I love most about Future Faces is the breadth of what we offer and who we reach. From breakfast networking sessions to rush-hour concerts at the CBSO, from workshops on imposter syndrome and neurodiversity to events tackling work-life balance and financial wellbeing, we are meeting young professionals where they are and giving them what they actually need.

Our diversity and inclusion working group, led by our brilliant vice-president Nadia JohnstoneSmith, ensures that inclusivity is

not just a buzzword for us, we embed it in everything we do.

If your young people are not members yet, ask yourself why.

And speaking of doing things differently, I am incredibly excited about this year's Greater Birmingham Young Professional of the Year (BYPY) Awards, taking place on 24 September at Birmingham Town Hall.

This year, we have completely reimagined the format. Gone are the traditional round tables.

Instead, think theatre-style seating with an Oscars-inspired vibe, redcarpet energy, and a cinematic

setting designed to put the spotlight firmly on the incredible young professionals who deserve to be celebrated. With 16 award categories and over 500 expected attendees, it is going to be a night to remember.

But beyond the glitz and glamour, there is a real purpose behind the changes. We know that today's young professionals do not necessarily want a traditional awards dinner that runs late into the night. They want an experience that feels inclusive, accessible and reflective of who they are.

They want to feel comfortable, whether they drink or not, whether they are an extrovert or an introvert, and whether this is their first awards ceremony or their tenth.

We have thought carefully about how we create an evening where everyone can have a brilliant time, with a variety of food, drink, entertainment and activities on offer that redefine what an awards evening can look like.

Our host this year is the wonderful PJ Ellis from BBC WM, a true champion of Birmingham who shares our passion for celebrating the people shaping this region's future.

And I am delighted that this year's awards are headline sponsored by Arden University, whose investment in our next generation of leaders, including a fully funded Executive MBA for our overall winner, speaks to exactly the kind of opportunity our city offers young professionals.

Being president of Future Faces has been one of the proudest experiences of my career. I started as a graduate at Intercity Technology over 10 years ago, and it has been networks like this one that have shaped who I am today and continue to shape my professional future.

Now, my mission is to make sure the next generation of young professionals gets that same support, that same sense of belonging, and even more opportunities to shine.

Birmingham's greatest asset is our people, and our youngest people are leading the way. Let’s keep championing them.

The Griffin Report The Botanical Gardens have been treasured in Birmingham for nearly two centuries. But they are now in the early stages of their biggest change – a £19.45m four-to-five-year capital development to restore the Grade Two-listed historic glasshouse estate to its former glory.

JON GRIFFIN met Jen Ridding, the head of engagement and learning, to discover how this delicate project will unfold.

I

t’s Birmingham’s “garden for everybody” – a much-loved slice of tranquility just over a mile from the city centre which has delighted naturelovers young and old for nearly 200 years.

Birmingham Botanical Gardens (BBG) can reasonably lay claim to being just as much a part of the city’s history as Rover or Cadbury, Ozzy Osbourne or Crossroads, or indeed any Brummie cultural icon of the past two centuries.

It’s a 15-acre Grade Two listed green oasis in suburban Brum which has stood the test of time for very nearly two centuries, with a colourful CV which belies today’s peaceful haven for more than 30,000 global plants which attract over a quarter of a million visitors to Edgbaston every year.

Its story embraces a genuine world exclusive – a surviving tree fern with roots literally dating back to the late 19th century which has no equivalent anywhere on the planet – alongside a bear, an alligator, llamas, a seal living in a fountain, monkeys and other 19th

century distractions for Victorian day-trippers.

As Jen Ridding, the Botanical Gardens’ head of engagement and learning, says: “The whole story is really fascinating. It’s a story of independent spirit, of changing to survive so long, of being embedded in the city and the community, of being part of people’s lives and the social fabric of the city.

“To think we have got this far – and now we have this incredible opportunity to set ourselves up and frame ourselves for the 21st century. It is quite amazing.”

That extraordinary back story – with the world-famous Latham’s Fern, bear, alligator et al – has now reached a critical juncture. The BBG has never closed since first opening its doors on Edgbaston farmland back in June 1832, surviving world wars, Birmingham’s growth as the workshop of the world and subsequent industrial decline, Covid, the Internet era and much else.

As Jen explains: “This is a once in a generation project to set the gardens up for its next 200 years. It is effectively a project to reframe and reset the gardens for the 21st century. We’ve got four listed glasshouses which are a really good example of Victorian glasshouses but they are at risk

“We knew that the heritage was at risk. Effectively if we didn’t make a radical transformation or intervention the business model didn’t stack up and the gardens would have closed. Without the glasshouses we can’t be a botanical garden.”

Jen highlighted the vastly improved accessibility for visitors the heritage project will ultimately provide.

“At the moment the visitor flow can be really challenging so they can get very busy. They get really hot and humid and not everybody responds well to that. But it is the only way into the gardens whereas this project will mean that we have different routes so you can choose when you want to go and enjoy the glasshouses – and then other visitors can go a different way.”

because the physical infrastructure will not last longer than the next few years.

“The gardens had got to a point where the financial model and the business model didn’t work. It wasn’t fit for purpose for the 21st century. We would have had to close the glasshouses because they wouldn’t have been safe within a few years. It’s really important that we save that heritage for future generations, conserve it, give it a new life.

As the Gardens, its 4,000 plus members and quarter of a million plus annual visitors prepare for the most crucial transformation in its history - backed by a major grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund - Jen is keen to stress that the Edgbaston site will remain open throughout the four to fiveyear refurbishment, in keeping with its proud near 200-year track record.

“We will remain open throughout for a number of reasons, the primary one being that we know how important we are for the people of Birmingham. The gardens have never closed in its history.

“We did receive some damage in the war. There’s a basement under the bandstand on the main lawn which was actually used as an air raid shelter – but we remained open throughout.”

as a much-loved Birmingham landmark spanning the centuries all the way from the Victorian era to the digital age.

Says Jen: “The Botanical and Horticultural Society was founded in 1829 with the explicit objective to establish a botanic garden for the city. Like all visitor attractions even today, they had to balance the books.

“They were always thinking about visitor footfall and the bottom line. So they made a decision to introduce a menagerie to drive footfall and keep visitors coming.

“We had a bear, we had an alligator, we had a seal who lived in the fountain, we had monkeys, we’ve got photos in the archive of llamas on the lawn. Some of our visitors or loyal members will probably remember the caged bird population – we re-homed those in 2024 because we’re not a bird sanctuary and we knew they could have a more enhanced quality of life and care.

“We also have a tree fern in the palm house, the only one of its type in the world. It was hybridised here in the late 19th century, has lived here ever since and is the only

one of its type in the world.” The hybrid fern was created by William Latham, then curator of the Botanical Gardens and is called Latham’s tree fern.

The Gardens’ unique fern will eventually be joining its 30,000 neighbours for the move to the refurbished glasshouses in tandem with the heritage project.

“It’s a big logistical jigsaw. We are having to move all the plants – some of them can only be moved at certain times of the year. They’re living organisms, fragile, delicate.

We’ve got an immense project at the moment behind the scenes – and our brilliant team of senior horticulturalists are working on it.”

And the 30,000 plants are not the Gardens’ only attraction. “We have an outdoor cinema, outdoor theatre. We have activities for family and children to get involved in nature engagement and exploring biodiversity in the gardens. We also run our own commercial and events business inhouse now.

“To have an independent charitable botanic garden that has survived this long in Birmingham I call a miracle survival – and I don’t think that’s an exaggeration.”

Airport exec lands keynote role The head of corporate affairs and marketing at Birmingham Airport (BHX) will be a keynote speaker for the Quarterly Business Report briefing event organised by Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce (GBCC).

Jo Roberts will share her expertise on the theme of navigating global uncertainty and seizing local opportunity during the event at Birmingham City University on Tuesday, 7 July from 9am to 11am.

Jo oversees all communications and marketing functions at Birmingham Airport including media, internal, political, social media, customer service and paid for activity.

Liberal Democrat Roger Harmer was elected as the council’s leader with his party forming a minority administration alongside the Greens and Better Birmingham Independent Group.

The Green Party’s Julien Pritchard will be the deputy leader.

Mr Harmer, the Birmingham’s first Liberal Democrat leader, said Birmingham required “leadership that is steady, pragmatic, and unwavering in its focus on the issues that matter most to residents.”

Businesses showing resilience The UK economy shrank slightly in April as the Iran conflict drove up the price of fuel, according to the latest figures.

However, on a three-monthly basis, the economy grew by 0.7 per cent – demonstrating the resilience of firms, business leaders said.

Gross domestic product (GDP) – a measure of everything produced in the economy – contracted 0.1 per cent in April according to data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

‘Government needs to take decisive action to lower the cost of doing business’ Ruth Fleet, senior policy adviser at Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce, said: “The threemonth view of GDP to April shows that businesses remain resilient in the face of current national and geopolitical challenges – but looking at April alone we see a slight contraction in GDP. “Businesses are reporting the pressures they are facing around rising energy and material costs as a consequence of the US-Iran conflict, as many brace for longer-term impacts.

“For example, 43 per cent of respondents to our recent survey told us that they anticipate their energy costs to rise between 20 per cent and 100 per cent in the next year. Government needs to take decisive action to lower the cost of doing business to give firms the space they need to thrive and drive our economy.”

Multifleet gears up for major company car deal Multifleet Vehicle Management has won a multi-million pound deal to provide salary sacrifice company cars to staff at one of the UK’s largest building and construction product suppliers.

Stark Building Materials UK Ltd has contracted Multifleet, which trades as runyourfleet and is based in Solihull, to manage its company car policy delivering electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles.

Stark employs 6,700 staff at more than 550 builders’ merchant branches and distribution centres across the UK, with around 2,000 staff eligible for the salary sacrifice deal.

Luke Savage, the runyourfleet manager looking after the Stark account, said: “We are delighted to have entered into this partnership, helping Stark to reduce their carbon footprint and enable tax savings for eligible staff.

“Stark had previously seen more than 200 vehicles provided on the scheme.

“With salary sacrifice now more popular than ever, and by proactively marketing the scheme and working with manufacturers to find deals and cars that appeal, the hope is to grow the numbers further.”

Kevin Choules, car fleet manager at Stark, said: “We were looking for a provider who could offer a proactive partnership, with strong communication, accuracy and a smooth end-to-end process for both the business and our employees.

Mayor sets out nighttime vision A vision for the West Midlands to become one of the most vibrant, safe and accessible regions after dark has been unveiled by mayor Richard Parker (pictured).

Measures, which include improving safety, boosting grassroots music venues, restoring night bus services and supporting businesses with costs, are set out in the first report to be published by the West Midlands NightTime Economy Commission.

The mayor tasked leading voices from the region’s pubs, restaurants, theatres, cinemas and entertainment venues with drawing up the detailed assessment of the region’s nightlife and identifying how he can best support the sector. The night-time economy employs 324,000 people – about one in four of the region’s workforce. Around 100,000 of those work in the region’s nightlife sectors.

But the industry is not currently firing on all cylinders, having been hit hard by Covid, the rising cost of living, and changes to licensing and regulation, alongside issues with public transport, safety and staffing. The mayor has welcomed the

commission’s vision and ambition and has pledged to get to work on implementing the report’s 25 recommendations.

He said: “Growing up, nights out were where you found your people. A new band, a great meal, a pub where everyone knew your name. It’s where you felt part of something. That still matters – and it employs tens of thousands of people across our region.

“The West Midlands has a night-time economy worth fighting for great pubs, incredible food and music venues that gave the world Black Sabbath and Two-Tone. But it only works if people can get there and get home safely, if the streets feel welcoming, and if businesses know someone is on their side. This commission has done serious work and sets out some bold new ideas.

Some of it we can deliver now. Some of it requires pushing government harder. All of it matters to our region’s cultural offer and our future.”

The appointment was confirmed as the new West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) board met for the first time following local elections.

Aston University funding to strengthen skills pipeline Aston University has secured almost £4m in new funding to improve the UK’s aerospace and cybersecurity skills.

The funding is part of an £80m national scheme distributed by the Office for Students.

The money will be used to support the development and expansion of a new BEng Aerospace Engineering programme and investment in specialist computing facilities to be used by both cybersecurity and aerospace engineering students.

The investment will enable the university to increase opportunities for undergraduates to develop advanced technical knowledge and industry-relevant experience in subjects that are critical to the country’s long-term defence capability and economic resilience.

The West Midlands Combined Authority and East Midlands County Combined Authority set out a joint plan to position the

Midlands as a globally recognised, innovation-led defence ecosystem by 2035, and build a future-ready workforce.

Professor Claire Lucas, executive dean of Aston’s School of Engineering and Innovation, said: “This funding is a major vote of confidence in Aston University’s ability to develop the next generation of highly skilled

graduates in strategically important disciplines.”

Minister for Skills Jacqui Smith said: “A strong defence sector needs a strong skills pipeline.

“This investment will help thousands more people gain the qualifications needed for rewarding careers in defence, working to protect our national security and boost our economic growth.”

When Simpex were preparing for the role as Official Bag Sponsor at Multimodal 2026, it made sense to look within the local Chamber network for support.

If you've attended one of our divisional events, chances are you’ve already met one of our Divisional Leads. They are the faces of our regional and themed Chambers, building relationships with members, leading events, engaging with key external stakeholders, and ensuring each division delivers activity that reflects the needs and ambitions of the communities it serves.

They’re also passionate ambassadors for the Chamber, always looking to grow our network by welcoming new members and helping existing members make the most of their membership.

Working closely with our relationship managers, they help keep our Chamber community thriving.

What are the key services your team provides to members and the wider business community?

A better question might be: what don’t they get involved in? From hosting networking events, roundtables and business forums, to organising visits to Parliament, shaping awards programmes, contributing to economic snapshots and supporting major events such as expos, our divisional leads play a central role in Chamber life.

They are the eyes and ears of the Chamber across our regions and themed divisions, helping us understand local business priorities and ensuring each division has its own unique identity and impact.

What does a typical day look like for your team?

There really is no such thing as a typical day. One morning might start with a member meeting over coffee, followed by an event planning session, a stakeholder meeting with a local authority, and an evening networking event. Another day could involve visiting members, developing new partnerships or championing business issues on behalf of our communities. The one constant? Our members are always at the heart of everything we do.

What’s a recent project, initiative, or success your team is particularly proud of?

There’s a lot to be excited about right now. We’re particularly proud of the redesign of our 2027 awards programme, which brings our regional awards and the GBCC Awards closer together while celebrating the unique achievements of businesses across our network. Alongside this, we've been evolving our GBYPY Awards following their landmark 25th anniversary and are also looking ahead to an incredible milestone year as the ABCC prepares to celebrate its 40th anniversary. What are the most common challenges or needs your team helps members address?

One of the things our team prides itself on is being able to help with almost anything. Whether it’s making the right introduction, navigating local stakeholder relationships, sharing advice on writing a press release, identifying speaking opportunities, or simply helping a member figure out who they need to talk to, we're always happy to help. We’re often described as connectors, problem-solvers and cheerleaders for our members.

What’s the most rewarding part of your work within the Chamber?

Without question, it’s seeing the impact we can have on our members’ businesses and careers.

Whether it’s making a connection that leads to a new client, helping a member raise their profile, supporting someone to overcome a challenge, or seeing a business win an award after years of hard work, it’s incredibly rewarding to know we’ve played a small part in their success. Our divisional leads build genuine relationships with members, so they often get to see those success stories unfold over months and years, which makes it even more special.

What are some fun facts about your team members?

Our team is full of surprises. Sophie can claim something not many people can; she was once serenaded by Cliff Richard, who apparently thought she looked like a “Living Doll”. Charlie set herself the ambitious challenge of visiting every country in the EU by the end of 2025 and successfully completed her mission. Sam has an HND in electronic engineering, although she insists you shouldn’t ask her to change a plug. Lillian represented the Netherlands in the Lacrosse European Championships and World Championships (2008 and 2009). Richard Brooks was almost cast in the 1984 movie, National Lampoons – European Vacation. Jayne Hume travelled in 22 internal flights in the US within 28 days. Katrina has Volunteered at the London 2012 Olympics and at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

The programme - MSc AI for Business Transformation – has been co-developed with industry partners through Aston’s Enterprise Innovation Centre. It is designed to equip students with cutting-edge knowledge of AI technologies to make students highly employable in today’s evolving job market.

AI has already impacted people's lives day-to-day, but it also has a wider impact on businesses and their operations. In the fastevolving world, it will help businesses to embrace AI tools and be ready for an AI driven revolution.

On your marks, get set... volunteer!

Fifty Birmingham City University (BCU) students will play a vital role in the delivery of the Birmingham 2026 European Athletics Championships by taking on a range of volunteer roles.

The students, from a range of courses, will get involved with roles including media, operations, hospitality, accessibility, ticketing, broadcasting, events presentation and more, and will be based at the iconic Alexander Stadium for the duration of the Championships in August.

BCU students will also be undertaking some paid roles and specially designed placement opportunities with departments including operations, commercial, media including press, photography and social media, and athlete services. These

shadowing opportunities will see students spend up to five days with a specific department, supporting their future career development.

“A key aspect driving our partnership with Birmingham 2026 was to create exciting

opportunities for our students,” said Laura Smith, associate director communications at BCU. “These roles offer an incredible chance for them to gain experience working as part of a major international sporting event happening here in Birmingham.”

Opportunity for BCU illustrators Two Birmingham City University illustration students are set to see their work published for a global audience.

Charlie Vickerstaff and Maryam Kalam have each been selected to produce artwork for two of Booktime’s upcoming titles, an early-career milestone many young creatives spend years working towards.

Booktime is an initiative of the Hindawi Foundation charity that provides free digital access to a vast library of illustrated, multilingual books through its app and desktop platforms.

From “Brief to Publication” gives students a creative brief, expert guidance, and the chance to pitch to industry, with selected illustrators awarded a paid commission to create a full children’s book for the platforms.

Charlie, 20, from Lichfield, said being chosen had boosted her confidence, adding: “It’s my first time working with a proper client, which is a little daunting, but incredibly exciting. It feels like a real first step in the right direction.”

Maryam, 19, from Yardley Wood, Birmingham, described the experience as “surreal”, adding: “To be chosen among so many talented artists is amazing. It’s

my first contracted project, and it’s opened my eyes to what’s possible early in our careers.”

Turkish Airlines renews Chamber agreement Turkish Airlines has renewed its long-standing patronage with Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce (GBCC), strengthening links between the West Midlands and one of the world’s largest global flight networks.

The award-winning airline has operated from Birmingham Airport for 18 years and runs twice-daily flights between Birmingham and Istanbul.

Through its Istanbul hub, Turkish Airlines connects the West Midlands to more than 300 destinations worldwide, supporting business travel, international trade and investment opportunities for firms across the region.

Last year, the airline increased its Birmingham to Istanbul service to double daily flights, underlining its long-term commitment to the region.

Raj Kandola, deputy CEO of the GBCC, said: “Turkish Airlines has played an important role in strengthening Birmingham’s global links over the past 18 years.

“Its twice-daily service to Istanbul gives businesses across the West Midlands access to more than 300 destinations worldwide, supporting trade, investment and international collaboration.

The ICC has celebrated its 35th anniversary. Opened by Queen Elizabeth II on 12 June 1991, the ICC has since welcomed royalty and global leaders, and more than eightmillion delegates to 15,000 events.

Since officially opening on the historic site of Bingley Hall – the UK’s first purpose-built exhibition hall – the ICC has continued to evolve to meet the needs of organisers and delegates.

Agencies win European airport transport brief Two of Birmingham’s leading independent agencies have come together to secure a significant brief from European airport transfer brand Flibco.

Chamber Premier members One Black Bear are working in partnership with SHC Digital to deliver a paid social, display and digital campaign that will focus on building awareness and driving bookings for Flibco’s premier airport shuttle service in key markets, including Belgium, France and Italy.

The two companies combined their creative and technical expertise to produce pitch-winning ideas that are now being developed into a robust, pan-European campaign.

The project has already moved into production, with teams travelling to Belgium for an intensive on-location shoot.

Lucy Bennett, account director at One Black Bear, said: “Flibco approached One Black Bear with a brief spanning social and display advertising.

“Recognising the need for high-impact, native social content, we decided to partner with our friends at SHC Digital, leveraging their extensive experience and proven track record in this space.

“The pitch was extremely competitive against many international agencies, which just goes to show how much talent and creativity we have in Birmingham.

“Flibco is an ambitious European brand with a clear role in making airport travel simpler and more affordable. Our focus will be on creating work that feels sharp, relevant and effective across several different markets, without losing the simplicity of the message.”

The relationship has already expanded beyond the initial remit, with Flibco subsequently approaching the partnership to handle a second brief for their “Door2Gate” transfer offering.

Supporting future financial planners Financial planners TrinityBridge are celebrating a significant early careers milestone, as colleagues Charles Anthony and Jamie Sutton have both achieved their Diploma in Regulated Financial Planning (DipPFS), marking an outstanding accomplishment at a notably early stage in their careers.

Having joined the firm’s Wealth Planning School Leaver Programme in 2024, Charles and Jamie, both

Recycling firm SUEZ is offering businesses a free 30-minute waste compliance check to confirm whether their current waste services meet the latest recycling requirements.

Award for courageous Mohammed A transport safety officer from leading security firm MAN Commercial has been recognised as a winner at the ACS pacesetters security officer of distinction awards 2026.

Mohammed Naqshbandi, who works for client Transport for West Midlands, received the award following an extraordinary off-duty incident.

While arriving early for work, Mohammed witnessed a violent burglary taking place at a shop near Summer Lane, Birmingham.

Despite being off duty and without personal protective equipment, he acted immediately to prevent further harm by pursuing and detaining one of the suspects before seeking assistance from on-duty security personnel.

Laura McCarthy, people and communications director at MAN Commercial Protection, who submitted the award nomination, said: “Mohammed demonstrated outstanding courage, restraint and professionalism in an incredibly dangerous situation.”

Global Chamber member inspires Malaga audience Globility Insights founder and Greater Birmingham Global Chamber committee member Marina Ibrahim delivered the opening keynote and workshop at the Toastmasters International District 107 Spring Conference in Malaga, Spain.

The conference brought together over 200 delegates from seven countries across Europe, North Africa, and beyond under the theme Amplify Your Impact.

Marina’s keynote, “Between Accents and Assumptions: How to Amplify Your Impact Across Cultures”, explored the impact of cultural assumptions, communication barriers, and inclusive leadership in global environments.

Drawing on her Egyptian-German-British background and more than 25 years’ experience working with multinational organisations, she encouraged audiences to see cultural diversity as a business strength rather than a barrier.

She also facilitated an interactive workshop, “From Accents to Assumptions to Action”, focused on practical strategies for improving cross-cultural communication, collaboration, and leadership effectiveness.

Conference chair and district director Claudia Villarreal described the keynote as “transformative”, adding that Marina “captivated the audience from the moment she took the stage” and left delegates “inspired and equipped with actionable insights”.

Among the international delegates attending the conference was Izidro Sousa, head of IT at Mercedes-Benz.io in Lisbon and TEDx speaker, who described Marina as “the kind of speaker every conference hopes to host”.

Scarlet Vázquez, a supply chain and operations professional at logistics group SEVICA in Barcelona, said the session was “one of the most insightful and transformative experiences” she had attended.

Marina said: “In international business, the ability to communicate across cultures is no longer optional. It is a leadership necessity.

What stood out most in Malaga was the shared desire for greater understanding, trust, and human connection across borders.”

Workplace furniture supplier opens doors to UK showroom Global workplace furniture supplier AJ Products has opened its first UK showroom in Hampshire.

The move marks the company’s first physical space outside Austria and the Nordic and Baltic countries.

AJ Products – a Birmingham Chamber member - say the opening is a direct challenge to the online purchasing model that has come to dominate workplace procurement.

Research finds ‘gaps’ in UK firms looking to expand to USA Research drawn from structured assessments across 21 UK companies has identified a consistent pattern of commercial and structural weaknesses affecting businesses planning or executing expansion into the United States.

Allentra USA has published new research based on its Q1 2026 US Market Entry Roadshow, drawing on structured assessments of 21 UK companies across 14 sectors.

The report concludes that the most common failure pattern is not a weak product or lack of US demand, but a combination of unresolved commercial model questions and structural gaps that accumulate quietly until they become expensive.

The research is based on a programme of workshops, discovery consultations and health checks conducted with UK growth-stage businesses at different stages of US expansion. Fourteen of the 21 companies assessed had already

entered the US market at the time of review.

For growth-stage businesses in Birmingham and the West Midlands, the findings reinforce that US expansion success depends not just on ambition or product quality, but on the strength of the commercial model, operating structure and execution plan behind it.

The British Chambers of Commerce has warned that new US tariffs should not lead to higher costs or loss of trade for the 40,000 UK companies who export goods to the US. William Bain, head of trade policy at the British Chambers of Commerce, said: “It is no surprise that the US is taking action, before its temporary section 122 measures expire, to make its broad 10 per cent tariff on most imports more permanent.

“The good news is that the findings indicate that the UK may not face a rise in the overall tariff rates on its goods entering the US.

“But in many sectors, the comparative advantage the UK had over other countries has been eroded since the US Supreme Court overturned the original tariff authority in February.

The priority must now be ensuring the fine print of these new tariffs in July does not lead to higher costs or loss of trade.

“The longer-term aim must be full implementation of the Economy Prosperity Deal and the Technology Prosperity Deal that the UK agreed with the US last year. This would deliver tariff reductions and improved services and digital trade terms between our countries.”

Apprentice joins family team CEO Chadd Blunt, who began his career as an apprentice 38 years ago, has welcomed the latest apprentice to his Millennium Cargo business.

Harley Reading has joined the freight forwarding business, echoing Chadd’s experience of learning the trade as an apprentice with no connections and no blueprint.

He went on to found Millennium Cargo in 1996.

Millennium Cargo is a family business in the truest sense.

Chadd’s daughter, Keeley Blunt, serves as finance director, and his son Connor, who joined as an apprentice a decade ago, is now commercial director.

Then there is sales and operations manager Ali Askar, who also came through as an apprentice and has been with the business for 25 years.

And Nikki Chidlow, who works in multimodal freight and sales admin, trained by Harley’s grandad, Steve, and worked with his uncle, Chris, 17 years before joining Millenium Cargo in October 2021.

Demonstrating how people and ‘family’ are at the heart of this business, as well as development and investment in people.

For Harley this is an opportunity to be a part of a business and culture, where an apprenticeship is not a shortterm placement but a genuine starting point. Continuing to walk in the footsteps of those before him.

Charities combine forces to reduce food waste Food rescue charity Felix claims more 80 per cent of the organisations it supplies would be at risk of providing vital support services were it not for the redistributed surplus food they receive.

Felix – the new name for merged charities FareShare and The Felix Project - has also found that over half of the organisations it provides food to nationwide have seen an increase in demand in the last year.

A survey of more than 2,700 UK charities has found that without that rescued food, 32 per cent would have to close their food support and a further 52 per cent

would need to scale back their offer because they could not otherwise afford the food they need to support those most vulnerable in their communities.

In the Midlands, FareShare Midlands is the largest network partner of Felix. Based in Birmingham, it redistributes quality surplus food to 650 charities and community groups.

FareShare Midlands is one of Felix’s 16 independent regional partners.

Last year, this network of partners helped provide the equivalent of 148 million meals, offering a reliable source of

nutritious surplus products to ensure sustainability of community food support services.

Pressure on these services is continuing to grow and it is hoped that the new charity will help unlock more food, reduce food waste and power support for communities into the future.

Museum helps protect nature

Equip Outdoor Technologies UK Ltd, the home of outdoor technical apparel brand Rab, is set to expand its operating footprint thanks to a £48.5m funding package from ABCC patrons HSBC UK. The eight-figure deal has enabled the Derbyshirebased outfitters to acquire a new six-acre warehousing facility in Alfreton.

Located two miles from key logistics corridors, including the M1 and A38, the site will support Equip’s continued growth by bringing multiple existing sites together in one location.

The funding will also provide additional working capital to help deliver the company’s wider business plan, which is targeting 40 per cent growth in annual sales over the next three years, and refinances existing borrowing facilities.

Rob Maynard, chief operating officer at Equip said: “The valued ongoing support from HSBC UK will help us expand capacity and put the right foundations in place for the next stage of our journey.”

Birmingham Museums Trust have signed become a key partner in a pioneering project with the Natural History Museum to help safeguard nature.

Local economy boosted as visitors take part in Staffy Trail More than 6,000 people are estimated to have explored the Staffy Trail since its launch, generating an early boost of up to £180,000 for Staffordshire’s visitor economy.

The popular public art and heritage trail, delivered by the Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent Local Visitor Economy Partnership (LVEP) in partnership with Staffordshire County Council and Making Trails, has already attracted almost 3,000 app users, with thousands more taking part using printed maps and visiting the sculptures independently.

Based on current participation figures and estimated visitor spending, organisers believe the trail has already generated between £87,000 and £180,000 for local businesses through spending on food, drink, shopping, attractions and transport.

The Staffy Trail features 11 giant Staffy sculptures across Stoke-on-Trent, Stafford, Tamworth, Uttoxeter and Lichfield, encouraging people to discover Staffordshire's attractions, heritage and independent businesses.

Trainee solicitor takes on trek for Alzheimer’s Society A member of the Future Faces division of Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce has walked 26 miles with her dad and brother to raise money for Alzheimer’s Society UK. Katherine Carter, a trainee solicitor at Cannock-based Enoch Evans, took on the Trek26 challenge in London after her grandad was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. She was inspired by her dad completing the Trek26 in the Peak District in 2025 and felt it was the perfect way to honour her grandad.

Katherine said: “The day itself was a great experience. The route took us past some of London’s landmarks and was a very well organised event.

“Despite the sore feet, we kept going due to the incredible atmosphere and support from the volunteers and organisers the whole way round.

This is the kind of support that reflects the importance of the Alzheimer’s Society’s work.”

Council launches search for regeneration project partner Tamworth Borough Council is looking for a development partner for its Gungate regeneration project, a major mixed-use opportunity, due to be launched later this year.

The Gungate redevelopment site extends to circa 6.82 acres (2.76 hectares) and is located at the heart of Tamworth town centre just 0.3 miles from Tamworth Railway Station.

The development’s central location offers opportunities to strengthen community connections by creating high-quality housing alongside public spaces that foster interaction and inclusion.

Past president appointed to Law Society A past president of the Solihull Chamber of Commerce has been appointed as deputy chair of the Board of The Law Society of England and Wales.

Eileen Schofield, principal solicitor and founder of Schofield and Associates, was appointed to the role for a three-year term following a competitive selection process.

As part of her role, she will be supporting the future of the legal profession alongside the Law Society’s leadership, staff and Council.

Eileen is also chair of the Legal Advisory Board at Birmingham City University and continues to dedicate her time to supporting education, business and the wider legal community.

She was also elected to the role of president of Birmingham Law Society in 2014/2015.

Celebrations mark Knowle anniversary Visit Knowle featured on BBC News ahead of the village’s 750th anniversary celebrations.

Kim Hulse, the organisation’s co-founder spoke to the BBC about what makes Knowle such a special place to live, work and visit.

The article, published on BBC News online, explores the history of Knowle, from its origins as Cnolle in 1068 to its establishment as a manor in its own right in 1276.

The 750th anniversary celebrations took place on Sunday, 21 June.

Local historian and Knowle Society member Ann Bower was also featured in the story, reflecting on the importance of the village’s heritage and the strength of its community.

Kim told the BBC: “The day is going to be bigger than any high street celebration that Knowle has put on before.”

The feature reflects growing interest in Knowle’s anniversary milestone and the work Visit Knowle has done to bring the community together around it.

The celebrations on 21 June included live music across two stages, an artisan market, community stalls, street food, family activities, a heritage exhibition from the Knowle Society and the official reopening of Knowle Library, all free to attend.

Become a mentor and give back Future Faces is now open for applications for a sixth cohort of its highly successful mentoring scheme.

It supports members to develop their career skills and future business aspirations through oneto-one mentoring.

Participants are matched with a mentor and will meet once a month over a six-month period, either online or in person. Applications close on 17 July. Those interested in becoming either a mentor or mentee can apply via the official application link.

Since its launch, the scheme has been incredibly popular with members and the wider business community, with over 300 mentoring relationships created across previous cohorts.

The programme is now seeking mentors from a wide range of backgrounds to support the next cohort of young professionals.

The mentoring scheme is now chaired by Nadia Johnstone-Smith, vice president of Future Faces Chamber of Commerce, who will lead the delivery of the sixth cohort alongside the mentoring committee.

As applications are received, the committee will work to carefully match mentors and mentees from a diverse range of sectors to ensure meaningful and impactful partnerships.

Nadia said: “Mentoring provides an opportunity to build relationships and accelerate your own personal and professional development. We hope this mentoring cohort empowers our young professionals to believe in their potential.”

Lichfield District Council backs young professionals Young professionals working in businesses across Lichfield can now apply for a fullyfunded 12-month membership of the Future Faces Chamber of Commerce – backed by Lichfield District Council.

The council is once again sponsoring 10 Future Faces memberships for one year, having sponsored two previous cohorts.

They have also taken out five memberships for their own staff.

Successful applicants will be able to benefit from mentoring opportunities, professional development events, networking sessions and a supportive community designed to help young professionals build confidence, develop new

he challenge facing our industries isn’t a lack of opportunity – it’s a gap between the talent we need and the way we attract, develop and inspire the next generation.

As the demand for skilled talent continues to grow, the construction, manufacturing and engineering sectors are facing a critical moment.

Across the UK, employers are battling persistent skills shortages, while at the same time a significant number of young people remain disconnected from meaningful career opportunities.

These industries are the backbone of our economy, particularly here in the West Midlands.

Yet too often, perceptions haven’t kept pace with reality. Modern careers in these sectors are innovative, technology-driven and full of opportunity – but we need to do more to tell that story and bring new talent with us.

Redefining quality in the modern workforce When we talk about “quality” in today’s workforce, we’re not just referring to technical competence. It’s about adaptability, mindset and a willingness to continuously learn and evolve.

From my experience working with businesses across the region, it’s clear that employers are looking for individuals who bring: • Curiosity and problem-solving ability • Digital awareness and openness to new technologies • A commitment to personal development • Strong collaboration and communication skills.

At the same time, young professionals are redefining what a “quality employer” looks like.

They expect investment in their development, clear progression routes and workplaces where they feel valued. Bridging that gap is where the opportunity lies.

Understanding Gen Z: A shift in expectations As Gen Z enters the workforce, we are seeing a clear shift in expectations – and it’s something businesses cannot afford to ignore.

This generation is purpose-driven, digitally native and values transparency. They want more than just a job; they want to understand how their role contributes to something bigger.

Increasingly, they are looking for: • Meaningful and impactful work • Flexibility and work-life balance • Continuous feedback and development • Inclusive and supportive cultures • Access to modern tools and ways of working.

Addressing the ‘lost generation’ Alongside this, there is a challenge we cannot ignore: the growing number of young people not in education, employment or training.

This so-called “lost generation” represents not only a social issue, but a significant missed opportunity for our economy. At a time when businesses are struggling to fill roles, there is untapped potential sitting on the sidelines.

This is where apprenticeships and targeted funding become critical.

Meanwhile, funding support enables employers – particularly SMEs – to invest in training without taking on disproportionate risk.

If we are serious about building a sustainable workforce, we must create clearer, more inclusive pathways into these industries and ensure no

talent is left behind simply because of a lack of access or awareness.

Changing perceptions of key sectors One of the biggest barriers we still face is perception. Construction, manufacturing and engineering are no longer just traditional or manual professions. They are at the cutting edge of innovation, driving sustainable construction and green infrastructure, advanced manufacturing and automation and engineering breakthroughs supporting net zero ambitions.

The challenge is making sure that message reaches the next generation.

A regional opportunity Here in Birmingham and the wider West Midlands, we are in a strong position.

Our region has a rich industrial heritage, a diverse and ambitious population, and a growing ecosystem of educators, employers and policymakers working together to address these challenges.

If we align those strengths with a clear focus on quality, access and innovation, we have an opportunity to lead the way in developing the workforce of the future.

Looking ahead This isn’t just about solving today’s skills shortages – it’s about shaping the future of our industries.

When summer

socialising becomes a workplace issue

Summer is associated with relaxation, celebrations and socialising. From after-work drinks and staff events to holidays and time off work, the warmer months can bring more opportunities for alcohol consumption and, for some, increased drug use. While many people enjoy these occasions without developing any issues, summer can be a particularly challenging time for those who are struggling with alcohol or drugs.

Workplace culture can sometimes play an unintended role. Social events often revolve around alcohol, and employees may feel pressure to join in, even when they would prefer not to. Some worry about being seen as antisocial if they leave early, choose a soft drink or decline invitations altogether. For individuals who are already concerned about their drinking or drug use, these situations can be difficult to navigate.

Events such as the World Cup also demonstrate how social norms around alcohol can create additional challenges, with drinking frequently forming part of workplace gatherings, client entertainment, and social celebrations.

The summer holiday season can also disrupt established routines. Time away from work often brings a more relaxed approach to drinking, later nights and changes in daily habits. For some people, returning to work afterwards can be challenging, particularly if substance use has 48 CHAMBERLINK July/August 2026

increased during their time off. What may have started as occasional excess can become more difficult to control, affecting wellbeing, concentration and performance at work.

…but, seriously, is it taking a toll?

One of the biggest challenges is that many people do not recognise when their alcohol or drug use has become problematic. The term ‘addiction’ can carry stigma and a negative stereotype that people do not identify with. As a result, individuals may dismiss warning signs or convince themselves that they are still in control.

By the time they seek support, problems may have escalated and begun to affect their health, relationships and employment.

For employers, substance misuse can have significant consequences. Increased absenteeism, reduced productivity, accidents and safety concerns, poor decision-making and strained working relationships can all have an impact on business performance. Colleagues may find themselves covering additional workloads, while employers face the costs and disruption associated with recruitment and staff turnover.

Help is at hand However, issues with substance abuse do not have to escalate to this point. Early intervention and support can help employees address problems before they become more serious.

Employers are often well placed to notice changes in behaviour, attendance, performance or mood that may indicate someone is struggling. Approaching concerns sensitively, confidentially and without judgement can encourage employees to seek help rather than hide their difficulties.

Creating a workplace culture where wellbeing is openly discussed can also make a significant difference. Managers should be confident in having supportive conversations and aware of the resources available to staff. Employees are far more likely to seek assistance if they know they will be treated fairly and with respect.

Supporting an experienced and valued employee through a difficult period is often far more beneficial for both the individual and the organisation than losing that person and having to recruit and train a replacement.

Recovery is possible, and with the right support many people successfully address substance use issues while remaining in employment.

Let’s make it a summer of wellbeing With summer underway, now is a good time for businesses to consider how they can support the wellbeing of their workforce. By recognising the challenges that can arise, reducing stigma and encouraging early conversations, employers can help create healthier, safer and more productive workplaces for everyone.

energy hubs: Powering the next phase of fleet electrification

raditional fleet depots are changing.

They were once, simply a place to park, maintain, and dispatch vehicles but now, as the UK pushes toward its net-zero targets and the 2035 phaseout of new diesel vans and trucks approaches, the humble depot is undergoing a high-tech makeover.

Across the country, from the industrial hubs of the Midlands to the “last-mile” delivery centres in London, depots are evolving into sophisticated "energy hubs." They are no longer just the end of the route - they are becoming mini-power stations that generate, store, and manage their own electricity.

Why the shift? The grid bottleneck

The balancing act: AC vs. DC

This evolution isn’t just a “nice to have” – it’s a necessity born out of a very straightforward problem: the grid. As fleets swap diesel for electricity, the demand for power is skyrocketing.

Many fleet operators are finding that if they try to plug in 50 vehicles at once, they’ll either trip the breakers or face a multi-million-pound bill from their Distribution Network Operator (DNO) to upgrade the local substation.

To keep the wheels turning without breaking the bank, depots must move beyond simple “plug and play” and start thinking strategically about energy.

Airline unveils 500th aircraft Turkish Airlines – which operates daily flights between Birmingham and Istanbul – has unveiled its 500th aircraft.

The aircraft features a special livery design with photographs of Turkish Airlines’ 100,000 employees and retirees.

Turkish Airlines’ chairman Professor Ahmet Bolat said: “Our 500th aircraft stands as a symbol of 93 years of dedication, determination, and shared vision.

“Having accelerated our journey from 2003 with 65 aircraft, today we take pride in reaching 356 destinations with over 500 aircraft.”

Mitie secures extended airport security contact Birmingham Airport has handed a two-year contract extension to security services provider Mitie, creating 60 new jobs and building on a partnership that spans more than 13 years.

The contract covers a range of essential security services at one of the UK’s busiest airports, which welcomed a record-breaking 13.6 million passengers last year.

An additional 60 security officers will join Mitie’s existing team as part of the new deal.

Mitie will also provide security for construction activities, as the transformation of Birmingham Airport’s terminal continues.

Caroline Milnes, head of aviation security at Birmingham Airport, said: “Mitie has been a partner of Birmingham Airport for over 13 years.

Caledonian Sleeper’s makeover pays tribute to hit show Outlander The Caledonian Sleeper rail service, which calls at Birmingham, has unveiled a striking new look to a number of its coaches in celebration of Sony Pictures Television’s hit global franchise Outlander.

The visual makeover, which marks Outlander’s deep connection to Scotland, aims to inspire fans of the show to visit the filming locations for themselves.

Caledonian Sleeper’s first visual activation showcases some of Outlander’s most iconic moments that were filmed in Scotland.

Outlander will embark on a fresh adventure, transporting guests from London and Birmingham to the lowlands and highlands of Scotland.

Each pass provides unlimited travel for one day across the WMR network and the network of its sister company, London Northwestern Railway (LNR).

This included tracking the number of sessions delivered as well as engagement levels, alongside collecting feedback from participants on their wellbeing and confidence.

Accountants launch sports finance division A Midlands accountancy firm has launched a new company to provide specialist tax and financial support to professional sportspeople.

HB&O Sports Management is dedicated to helping athletes, agents and clubs to manage their finances with confidence.

The company said the service is intended to help clients manage increasingly complex financial obligations during and after their sporting careers.

HB&O Sports Management will also provide support around tax returns, HMRC correspondence and financial planning, alongside educational sessions intended to improve financial awareness among younger athletes.

The division has already hosted information sessions at sports clubs in the Midlands, including Aston Villa. Former England and Aston Villa footballer Tony Daley and exBirmingham City player Beryly Lubala are among the early clients to sign up to the service.

Business finance provider UKSE has funded a recording studio being used by young people taking their first steps in music and enabling them to learn technical skills.

YMCA North Staffordshire’s recording facility, launched with financial support from UKSE, is giving young people in the area access to professional-standard music recording and podcasting facilities to help them to gain experience.

Based at YMCA’s Hanley site in Stoke on Trent, the studio is part of a multi-million-pound youth hub that encourages creativity, confidence and collaboration among people aged under 25.

UKSE’s funding ensured the facility was kitted out with recording equipment.

Since the centre officially opened last July, 150 young people have made use of the studio.

UKSE’s team, based in Keys Business Village, Cannock, supports SMEs in Birmingham, the Black Country, Coventry, Staffordshire and Telford.

Mike Lowe, UKSE regional executive, said: “UKSE is committed to helping businesses and organisations prosper for the benefit of the community, so when we first visited in person it was clear that the YMCA North Staffordshire should be supported as it plays a particularly important role in supporting young people.”

Campaign to bring more awareness to gut heath Businesses in Birmingham are being invited to support a public health campaign to be launched in the city next year to create awareness around digestive and gut health.

The campaign, named Inside Out, is led by Global Healthcare Projects (GHP) a NFP organisation with 20 years’+ experience in disease prevention and public health advocacy.

It is built on growing scientific evidence that digestive and gut health underpin overall wellbeing,

influencing physical health, mental resilience and long-term disease prevention.

At the heart of the festival is a 40-foot interactive walkthrough gut exhibit, complemented by expert talks, workshops and practical demonstrations.

The London launch last year demonstrated significant impact, engaging thousands of participants, strengthening partnerships across public health, VCSE’s, social prescribing networks generating widespread public interest. Crucially,

the model emphasises co creation with local communities ensuring relevance, trust and lasting behavioural change.

For Birmingham, this presents an opportunity to support inclusive economic and social development, improving health literacy, reducing long term pressure on public services, and fostering collaborations between employers, community organisations and policy makers.

New regional research network to tackle health inequalities Honour: Professor Christopher Langley

School head joins prestigious board Professor Christopher Langley, head of Aston Pharmacy School, has been appointed by the Privy Council to the governing council of the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC), with his term beginning in 2027.

The GPhC is the regulatory body for pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and pharmacies in Great Britain.

It was set up by the UK and Scottish parliaments but remains independent from government.

It is funded by registered members, including pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and pharmacies. The governing council of the GPhC is made up of both pharmacy professionals and members of the public.

Professor Langley said: “I am looking forward to using my experience as an academic pharmacist to help shape the profession’s regulatory approach.”

A new regional research network designed to bring more clinical trials, innovative treatments and research opportunities to local communities across the West Midlands and beyond has officially launched.

The Central and Northwest Midlands Commercial Research Delivery Centre (CRDC) is made up of NHS Trust, GP practices, universities and voluntary and community sectors from the region.

They include Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health Foundation Trust, The University of Birmingham, Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, Black Country Healthcare Foundation Trust and University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust.

The online event showcased how the network will help to make research more accessible for the diverse communities across Birmingham, the Black Country,

Solihull, Staffordshire, Stoke-on-Trent, Shropshire and Telford and Wrekin.

Organisations will support research opportunities and ensure patients from a wide range of backgrounds can access innovative treatments and studies closer to home. The region is home to 4.2 million people and is one of the most diverse areas in the country, but many communities continue to experience significant health inequalities and poorer health outcomes.

The CRDC aims to address this by promoting the Midlands to commercial sponsors as an ideal location to run research studies and clinical trials. By attracting more pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical device companies to the area, the network hopes to give local people greater access to innovative treatments and medications they may not otherwise be able to receive.

New partnership at law firm Midlands law firm Burley Law has formed a new charitable partnership with food redistribution charity FareShare Midlands.

The partnership follows an early fundraising boost from the AJ Bell Great Birmingham Run. The firm said the partnership will support FareShare Midlands’ work redistributing surplus food to vulnerable communities across the region, with staff already helping to raise funds through participation in the Birmingham running event.

The specialist UK law firm, which provides legal advice in employment law and intellectual property, has already raised £884 after team member Isha Kumar completed the Birmingham 10K earlier this year - putting the company within touching distance of its original £1,000 annual target just months into the partnership.

Taylor Swift uses IP to protect personal brand Taylor Swift is only the latest in a long line of celebrities using Intellectual Property (IP) to protect their personal brands, according to a leading lawyer.

The pop superstar recently applied to trademark her voice and appearance in an apparent attempt to protect herself from artificial intelligence impersonations.

She lodged three trademark applications in the US - one using a photo of herself on stage during her Eras Tour and the other two being audio clips of her introducing herself while promoting her last album.

Various AI-generated versions of Taylor Swift have appeared in recent years, from explicit images to a fake election ad in which she appeared to urge people to vote for Donald Trump.

Footballer Gareth Bale was a pioneer in this area, trademarking his heartshaped goal celebration back in 2013, and darts world

number one Luke Littler has also applied for trademark protection for his facial image.

Declan Goodwin, a partner at national law firm Clarke Willmott and an expert in commercial law and intellectual property, says more celebrities will use IP to protect their image in the coming years.

He said: “Trademark applications are a relatively new way for celebrities to combat the growing issue of AI ‘rip-offs’. Taylor Swift is just the latest to file a trademark application and as AI fakes continue to proliferate, many more will surely follow suit.

“For leading sports stars, pop stars and movie stars IP rights are fundamental, not only in protecting performance-related innovation, but also in monetising personality, brand and fan engagement.

“These celebrities are increasingly sophisticated rights holders, managing their image and identity as commercial assets so they can leverage IP rights to move beyond traditional endorsement deals, building long-term brand value through licensing, sponsorships and partnerships.

Taking steps to prevent city centre graffiti West Midlands Police and Birmingham City Council have joined forces to tackle the effect of graffiti in the city centre.

Enforcement action is underway with Southside district and Birmingham Colmore urging businesses and the public to play a more active role in reporting graffiti incidents, helping partners build the intelligence needed to identify offenders and speed up enforcement.

City partners are taking action, including targeted patrols and spot enforcement, but graffiti damage remains widespread.

One of the key challenges is that the vast majority of incidents are never formally reported to police, limiting the ability to link offences, spot repeat offenders and take decisive action.

Funding to boost construction skills Tens of thousands of placements will be created for aspiring construction workers in a £96m boost to train new talent and build more homes.

Funding is being allocated across the country to provide hands-on learning and boost employability for learners who start their construction courses from this September. This is part of the £625m Construction Skills Package aiming to train up 60,000 skilled workers by 2029.

The construction industry is facing significant shortages, with the latest Office for National Statistics figures showing that there are over 35,000 job vacancies – over half of which are due to a lack of required skills.

It comes as the government hits a major milestone in helping to bring vocational education on par with academic.

Skills Minister Jacqui Smith said: “We’re removing the snobbery from hands-on learning and putting it on par with academic to break down barriers for young people to get rewarding jobs.

“Our landmark vocational qualifications and placements will create a strong pipeline of workers by equipping young people with the skills that employers need and that will fuel the jobs of the future.”

While all city centre BIDs continue to clean and remove graffiti daily, this alone does not deter offenders.

Angela Qi Huang, business relationship manager at Southside District, said: “Graffiti tagging is a scourge of the city.

“Our teams remove it daily, but cleaning alone doesn’t stop it happening again.”

In 2025 alone, Birmingham Colmore and Southside District received over 500 reports of graffiti directly from businesses.

The cost of removal runs into thousands of pounds every year, with around 10 per cent of BID cleaning budgets spent addressing graffiti across both public and private land. Critically, it is estimated that fewer than one in 10 graffiti incidents are actually reported to West Midlands Police.

All city centre BIDs operate with a Single Point of Contact (SPOC) at West Midlands Police for graffiti incidents, ensuring reports are

logged, mapped and escalated to relevant partners. This creates a clearer operational picture but only when incidents are known about.

John Jo-Von Johnson, head of services for Birmingham Colmore and Southside District, said: “We know police and partners are acting, but without reporting from businesses on the ground, our response remains reactive. If reporting improves, enforcement can move faster and be more targeted.”

Paragon finances 71-bed care home in Birmingham Paragon Development Finance is supporting the acquisition and development of a new 71 bed care home in Birmingham which is expected to reach a mature trading value of over £25m.

The funding has been provided to MACC Care Properties to acquire a brownfield site on Shaftmoor Lane in Hall Green, Birmingham, and subsequently develop a 44,132 sq ft purpose built care home. The completed scheme will represent the operator’s 21st care home to date.

Darren Ellis and portfolio manager Olly Das. The transaction reflects Paragon Development Finance’s continued focus on diversification, as the specialist lender broadens its support beyond its core residential development offering to respond to shifting demand and changing demographics.

Alongside residential housing, the division has increasingly focused on sectors such as build to rent, later living, purpose built student accommodation and, most recently, care homes.

Demand for care home provision is expected to continue rising as the UK’s population ages.

According to the ONS, the number of people aged 65 and over is projected to increase significantly over the coming decades, with the population aged over 85 growing at the fastest rate.

Urgent action needed to help jobless youth A major report into youth unemployment – which warns one in six could be out of work, training or education in five years if no action is taken – should serve as a wake-up call to government, West Midlands business leaders have said.

The interim review from former minister Alan Milburn said job opportunities for young people are shrinking. It says six in 10 “Neets” (not in employment, education or training) have never had a job (compared to four in 10 in 2005), while there were 1,012,000 young people classed as Neet between January and March 2026.

But 84 per cent of Neet young people surveyed want a job or training, the report adds.

However, the report recognised an “overwhelming desire” among businesses to employ young people from their local area.

Emily Stubbs, head of policy at the GBCC, said: “It is welcome to see the Milburn Review recognise the ‘overwhelming desire’ of most businesses to employ young people from their local area. It should be a real wake-up call for government.

AI feasibility reports for SMEs available Tech consultancy B13.AI has partnered with Tech WM to launch the West Midlands Digital Accelerator, where SMEs in the region are offered 50 funded AI feasibility reports.

A feasibility report is a practical starting point for a business that suspects technology could help them, but is not sure where to begin, what it would cost, or whether it would deliver a return.

Tech experts support leisure supplier’s systems overhaul Mortgage firm invests in AI A Birmingham-based mortgage and protection firm is entering a new phase of growth after investing in advanced technology and responding to changing attitudes among younger professionals.

The Mortgage Bab, founded by Sutton Coldfield adviser Kelly Ellis (pictured), has expanded its offering in recent months by adopting new AI-driven systems designed to streamline the mortgage and protection process.

A supplier of leisure equipment has upgraded its finance systems with support from technology solution partner CPiO, following limitations in its existing reporting and data management processes.

SAM Leisure, which supplies pool tables, air hockey and other leisure products to venues across the UK, including holiday parks, universities and sports centres, said its previous systems were no longer providing the visibility required to support day-to-day operations.

The Coventry-based company has traded for more than 20 years and has expanded steadily in recent years as demand for leisure and entertainment venue fit-outs has increased.

Like many established SMEs, SAM Leisure had continued to rely on Sage 50 as its core finance platform.

Matthew Drage, director at SAM Leisure, said: “At a certain point it became clear we weren’t dealing with a one-off data issue, but a system that had reached its limits.”

The business moved to a new finance and business management platform, opting for Sage 200 Professional, implemented with support from technology partner CPiO. For SAM Leisure, a key requirement was ensuring that operational continuity was maintained during the transition, while creating a more stable foundation for future growth.

Elmhurst talent goes on display Elmhurst Ballet School, in association with Birmingham Royal Ballet, has announced details of its 2026 summer performances, presented under the umbrella title Orpheus.

A much-anticipated highlight of the Edgbaston-based school’s calendar, the performances celebrate the artistry, discipline and creativity developed by Elmhurst students throughout the academic year.

Running from 3 to 9 July in the school’s studio theatre, Orpheus will comprise six performances across Lower School & Elmhurst Young Dancers, Upper School, and Whole School productions.

The performances mark an important milestone for students progressing through the School and, for Elmhurst Ballet Company, represent the culmination of their vocational training before entering professional dance careers.

Local hero honoured at stadium The Birmingham 2026 European Athletics Championships (August 10-16) organisers surprised local athletics hero Matthew HudsonSmith, by naming the extension of the North stand after him.

The title will be in place until the end of the Championships.

The European record-holder and second-most decorated male European athlete in history, Matthew is a part of a long legacy of athletics excellence from the West Midlands region.

Having trained with Birchfield Harriers and proudly from Wolverhampton, the sprinter has

previously stated his wish for the back straight of his home stadium to carry his name.

Cherry Alexander, championship director for Birmingham 2026, said: “Matthew is a true homegrown star, and we were delighted to welcome him home by unveiling the Matthew Hudson-Smith Stand for Birmingham 2026 with his family and peers in attendance.

“Matthew’s international achievements are inspiring a future generation to dig deep, and this stand is a celebration of that. We hope to fill the stand with young local fans, and maybe even the next Matthew-Hudson Smith will be in the

crowd watching him compete in front of a home crowd this August.”

Matthew visited Alexander Stadium to talk about the road to the European Athletics Championships and while there, was surprised by the stand name unveiling in a special moment attended by his family, his first coach Sharon Morris, alongside former sprinter and Team GB 4x400m Team Coach Martyn Rooney.

Matthew said: “It caught me off-guard walking in to see the stand is going to be named after me, and it was a special moment to share it with my family.”

Aged 22, training as a pharmacist, I watched colleagues paralysed by fear before an area manager’s visit. That was my introduction to culture’s power.

What advice would you give to someone starting out?

Don’t wait! There’s no “right time”. And learn your craft deeply. Comedians are funny because they notice details we miss. Be that observant.

What’s your greatest achievement so far?

A leadership programme participant said our work had been life-changing, better relationships, better self, then promoted. Awards matter; transforming lives matters more.

Which business do you most admire?

Octopus Energy. Exceptional customer service, a culture that looks joyful, genuine advocacy for customers, and a clear mission to make a real difference.

What is the biggest risk you’ve ever taken – and did it work out?

During Covid-19, we became apprenticeship providers. Huge financial risk, brutal bureaucracy, but 80 per cent distinction pass rate and we survived while competitors folded.

What keeps you awake at night?

Launching the Values Alignment Index® across the UK, Australia, Canada, US and Europe. Years of investment riding on whether the world sees its potential.

If you could turn the clock back, what would you do differently?

I’d act sooner on bad hires. When values clearly didn’t align, I waited too long. The signs were there; I chose to ignore them.

What exciting projects is your business working on?

The Values Alignment Index® – launching imminently. It measures human values to predict workplace harmony, moving us from consultancy to international technology company.

Professor Michael Wolters, professor of composition at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, has given his top tips for making

sure a football song doesn’t turn into an own goal.

“First and foremost, it needs to be singalong-able,” said Professor Wolters. “It could mean a good anthemic tune like Three Lions which gets people singing.

“Or in the case of New Order’s World In Motion, a sound that people are familiar with at the time, with their hyper-syncopated lyric settings.

“You can show off football’s playfulness through arrangement and production.

“Kylie’s Your Disco Needs You has the perfect setting to be converted into Your Football Needs You. “We should also be celebrating the technical prowess of players in these songs.

Even to produce a song on the level needed for the commercial sector requires a lot of technical knowledge.”

Festival headline acts announced A vocalist described by Black Sabbath’s first manager as “the UK’s finest ever female jazz singer” has been confirmed as one of the headline acts at this summer’s Birmingham Jazz & Blues Festival.

Val Wiseman will perform with The Lady Sings the Blues orchestra on Friday, 31 July, at The Core Theatre in Solihull during the festival, which runs from Friday 24 July to Sunday 2 August.

The other headliner at this year’s 42nd consecutive festival is King Pleasure & The Biscuit Boys, performing at the Botanical Gardens on Friday 24 July.
