Region’s future lies in hospitality ospitality plays a pivotal role in Hampshire’s economy with the performance of the county’s hotels a prime indicator of wider growth prospects. Confidence in our region’s quality hotel sector has continued to rise in line with recently renewed demand from both the leisure and corporate markets. Occupancy figures since the easing of pandemic restrictions and the return of cruise passengers have cheered managers at Southampton’s two city centre Leonardo hotels, both rated four-star. Sarah Banks (pictured), Cluster Sales Manager at the Leonardo Royal Grand Harbour Hotel Southampton at West Quay and the Leonardo Hotel Southampton in Charlotte Place, formerly Jurys Inn, is optimistic about the future. She said: “Just like the rest of the UK, Southampton’s hospitality sector has been through a rollercoaster. At Leonardo Hotels, we had been in a really good transition after purchasing the Grand Harbour at the end of

H

2018. It was going very well until March 2020 when Covid hit. “I’d say that since the pandemic we have adapted to a different kind of business: busier, more fast-paced demand from leisure customers coupled with changing trends in corporate travel reflecting new hybrid working policies. We see demand for corporate bookings including for conferences, team building events and training sessions - being especially heightened on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, while weekends are always busy with cruise and leisure break customers. “With key cruise liner companies bringing more and more cruise ships to our city, we have seen a huge rise in cruise customers. We have cruise bookings right the way through 2024 and we believe that trend will continue to grow.” Sarah leads a team of five events and sales executives responsible for the occupancy levels of 443 bedrooms and 22 meeting spaces across the two hotels. “We see strong demand reflecting Southampton’s status as a destination in itself rather than merely a stop-off point,” she

Historic steamships put on a fantastic display There was a rare and wonderful sight on southern coastal waters on both 3 and 4 September when two heritage steamships, both built in Scotland and today forming part of the National Historic Fleet, met up with one another off Bournemouth and the Solent. Southampton based Steamship Shieldhall was staying in Poole for one week and returning to her home port after visiting the Bournemouth Air Festival, while Paddle Steamer Waverley was enjoying part of her three-week long sailing

programme in the south of England. The two steamships put on a great show for their respective guests on board, with sounding of steam whistles and sirens as the two vessels met up. A number of vessels accompanied Shieldhall and Waverley as they steamed alongside one another for approximately one hour. There was fabulous customer feedback and recognition of a special moment as the two ships (with a combined age of 144 years) bade each other a fond farewell, again with a resounding session of steam whistle tooting!

said. “We have on average over 90% occupancy on most nights of the week. That shows we are a competitive city. Of course, more can always be done to improve the welcome and feel of the waterfront and the city’s overall offer. We do need to do more to develop the hotel sector to attract cruise passengers and other leisure guests from both the UK and abroad, but I am optimistic about future growth because we are such a fantastic location.” Visit: www.leonardohotels.co.uk

Fast-track across the Solent H ampshire’s pioneering spirit owes everything to the world-class skills and talents of our people. We have an unrivalled, diverse skills base developed over many centuries, from the vanguard of 18th century shipbuilding right up to today’s cutting-edge technologies. One company doing exceptional work in the passenger transport field is Hovertravel, operator of the Southsea-Ryde hovercraft service. Around 30 million people have fast-tracked across the Solent since Hovertravel established Europe’s first scheduled passenger hovercraft service in the 1960s. As well as regular commuters on the tenminute journey linking Southsea and Ryde, demand comes from weekend and midweek leisure break customers, daytrippers, group tours, people attending events such as the Isle of Wight Festival, and of course the business market. Two hovercraft, named Island Flyer and Solent Flyer, maintain the route and as the speediest way to cross the Solent, the yearround service has become a highly visible

tourist attraction in its own right. “It’s the world’s longest running commercial hovercraft service,” said Patrick Sowerbutts, Partnerships and Development Manager for Hovertravel. “The key advantage of hovercraft is the ability to travel at extremely low tides.

‘Solent Views is proving popular as a venue with a stunning backdrop’ “The Island Flyer and Solent Flyer are versatile and efficient, and able to transport passengers and parcels quickly and comfortably across the Solent.” Both hovercraft are examples of the model GHL 12000TD, introduced in 2016. They were built by manufacturer and sister company Griffon Hoverwork, also based in Hampshire and part of the Bland Group portfolio of companies since 2008. A recent renovation of Hovertravel’s terminal building on Ryde’s seafront esplanade has seen

the creation of Solent Views, a meeting, events and conference venue. “Solent Views is proving popular as a venue with a stunning backdrop,” added Patrick. “It’s ideal for social events such as weddings, cocktail parties and celebrations as well as business conferences and training sessions.” As well as flying the flag for passenger transport and hospitality here in Hampshire, expertise built up over several decades by Hovertravel and Griffon Hoverwork is shared across the world. Griffon Hoverwork clients use a variety of hovercraft for essential commercial, military and rescue purposes in the sea and on a wide variety of terrain. Now the 12000TD is the focus of one of Griffon Hoverwork’s recent commissions, a circa £25m contract from the Japanese government to build and supply three hovercraft. They will provide a vital passenger service connecting Oita Airport in Kunisaki with Oita City on a ferry route.

The taste of success for food festival he first Winchester Food Festival, organised by Hampshire Fare with support from Winchester BID and Winchester Cathedral, was a great success. The Festival was held on 9 July in Winchester Cathedral’s Outer Close. people attended; it was a really positive day all round with many lovely comments from visitors, and producers asking if we can do it all again next week! “This event was all about community and local, with generous sponsorship from several local businesses and organisations enabling us to roll out the Festival as a free event. I would like to thank everyone who helped to make Winchester Food Festival happen: our

volunteers; our producers; our chefs, who were truly amazing; and our supporters - NFU Mutual Winchester and Wickham, Shorewood Homes, Quob Park Free Range & Organic, Winchester Bakery, Winchester BID and Winchester Cathedral.” The artisan market was popular with people buying produce, such as charcuterie, cheese, chutneys, olives, pâtés, savoury tarts, fudge, pastries, shortbread, juice and alcohol-free cocktails for a picnic on the grass. The chefs’ kitchen was exceptional, and featured top local chefs including Damian Brown from Chesil Rectory, Lenny CarrRoberts of Shoal, The Fox and The Bugle, who had appeared on James Martin’s Saturday Morning TV show the previous day, and Paul Onami with Miff Kayum of Kyoto Kitchen, creators of the Winchester Roll. Unlocking the blueprint to trading success emand for help in exploring export markets has put a South West trade company on course for a record year. International Trade Matters, founded by Linda Middleton-Jones in 2017, helps around 40 businesses every month through a mixture of strategic advice and tactical training. This has placed her Devon-based business on target to increase sales by 25% to align with the firm’s national rollout of its Global Trade Blueprint (GTB). Predicated on the principles of ‘Lean and Sensemaking’, the implementation tool has been recognised as a gamechanger for companies wanting to compete in volatile and uncertain trading environments. GTB delivers a readiness tool for business recovery, growth, and internationalisation. It gives companies the opportunity to explore and unlock potential by accessing unrivalled market intelligence to create building blocks that consider global volatility and different trading nuances. “There was a major gap in international support between what the Chambers of Commerce provide and what the Department for Business & Trade delivers, that’s where International Trade Matters comes into its own,” explained Linda Middleton-Jones, who was named Most Influential Woman in MultiSector Commerce last year. “We have built up our compliance specialisms to include IP, sector strengths in marine, automotive, and aerospace and in

Chris Walker, CEO of Diamond Hard Surfaces, benefitted from the course: “We found that GTB was a very valuable and useful process, whether applied to our business in general or specifically when used to drive growth in international trade. “The sensemaking aspect was a real benefit to understanding where we are now, and this helped develop a clear visual map that gave structure to the unknown. developing new market entry strategies – all fine-tuned into the new Global Trade Blueprint that supports businesses at any stage of their export journey.” GTB is a four-week course that will take place online on Wednesday mornings (between 9 am to 12.30 pm), allowing management teams to stay connected with their business with background work to be completed between sessions. The sessions develop a framework tool that ensures success in overseas markets by reducing risk. Delegates will clarify their capacity, competency, and capability to meet the quality, cost, and delivery requirements in overseas markets before delivering a deep dive into the right markets for their products and services. Linda Middleton-Jones

‘We are linking the principles of Lean into Export allowing companies to build on their competitive edge and visibility in overseas markets’ They will also learn about their own leadership signatures, attitudes, and biases before providing means to encourage, retain and sustain high performing teams. Linda added: “The next cohort began on 13 September, with four firms taking part. This will be followed by a further three cohorts over the next few months.” Bookings are now being taken for the October and November cohorts, where up to eight directors are guided through the complex maze of life after Brexit, including the main failure modes, negotiations, global issues and supply chain resilience. More than 100 businesses have already gone through the Global Trade Blueprint and received assistance with understanding

threats, compliance, distribution channels, and emerging markets – now and in the future. Linda, who was also the architect behind the South West Manufacturing Advisory Service’s National Manufacturing Barometer, concluded: “There’s definitely a demand for independent specialist export assistance, so much so that we are seeing a significant increase in companies requesting our services. We are linking the principles of Lean into Export allowing companies to build on their competitive edge and visibility in overseas markets. “The UK’s reputation for manufacturing design, innovation, and new technology is still firmly in place and, despite all of the challenges and additional hurdles we have to contend with, international trade still remains a fantastic way to grow your business.” Linda’s experience in international trade has seen her deliver two keynote speeches in Milton Keynes and Belfast, with her next ‘Lean into Export’ talk to be given at the Glasgow Manufacturing & Supply Chain Conference on 25 October. Helping you take your business global

Understanding ATA Carnets TA Carnets are a ‘passport for goods’ which are temporarily moving from one country to another. UKNATACO is ultimately responsible for all ATA Carnets issued from the UK as well as guaranteeing in-bound Carnets – those that are issued overseas, and which relate to goods coming into the UK under the scheme. The information below provides general information for businesses and individuals who wish to move goods abroad temporarily. The ATA Carnet is an international customs document that permits duty-free and taxfree temporary import of goods for up to one year. They can be used in 80+ destinations around the world and contain pre-prepared unified customs declaration forms to be used at customs border offices and serves as a guarantee to customs duties and taxes if they become necessary i.e. if the Carnet is misused or the goods remain in the country of temporary importation permanently.

A

What are the benefits and advantages of ATA Carnet? Established under the ATA Convention and the Istanbul Convention as a trade facilitation tool, ATA Carnets cut red tape by simplifying and unifying customs border crossing regulations for temporary import and export. With an ATA Carnet, exhibitors, salespeople, artists, athletes, TV crews, technicians, event participants and business travellers may travel through customs without paying import duties or taxes at each customs border office.

In addition, they only need to use one document for multiple destinations and trips throughout its one-year validity and can make advanced customs arrangements at predetermined costs. ATA Carnets cover almost everything. The list includes: • Goods for use at trade fairs, shows, exhibitions • Professional equipment (tools of trade, test and scientific equipment etc) • Commercial samples and personal effects and goods for sports purposes (including race vehicles). ATA Carnets cannot be used for: • Consumable items • Items that may be sold • Equipment to be used for the construction, repair or maintenance of buildings or for earthmoving and like projects. Digital ATA Carnet Pilot As of July 2023, the UK is involved with a pilot trialling the eATA Carnet, with the purpose being to validate the digital ATA Carnet concept and to demonstrate that all aspects of the ATA Carnet lifecycle management can be carried out electronically, in order to enable the World Customs Organisation to adopt digital Carnets as a legally acceptable tool for temporary admission from 2024. The pilot will involve processing both the paper and digital Carnet in tandem (the digital Carnet will only be processed if both the port of departure and port of arrival are participating in the pilot), and will involve presenting both the paper and digital Carnet in tandem to the UK and participating foreign Customs. UK trial will initially involve

London Heathrow Airport and will then gradually expand to other airports and ro-ro ports around the country. Countries United Kingdom • London Heathrow Airport - Passenger and Cargo Belgium • Brussels International Airport - Passenger and Cargo • Liege Airport Cargo - (including horses) Canada • Montréal-Trudeau International Airport - Air Cargo China • Beijing Capital International Airport - Passenger and Cargo

orporate insolvencies increased by 33.6% in August and remain stubbornly high when compared to a year ago, says R3, the UK’s insolvency and restructuring trade body. The main drivers of this increase are long-term economic issues, director fatigue and creditor pressure. R3 regional chair Garry Lee is warning that many businesses in the Southern and Thames Valley region are at a point where they need specialist help to survive. Personal insolvencies levels also increased in August compared to July but were down when compared to last year and pre-pandemic levels. R3 is the trade association for the UK’s insolvency, restructuring, advisory, and turnaround professionals and its Southern & Thames Valley region includes Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, Wiltshire and Berkshire. Figures just published by the Insolvency Service revealed that corporate insolvencies increased by 33.6% in August 2023 to a total of 2,308 compared to July's total of 1,728 and increased by 18.9% compared to August 2022's figure of 1,941. Corporate insolvencies also increased by 71.3% from August 2021’s total of 1,347 and by 69.1% compared to pre-pandemic levels in August 2019 (1,365). Personal insolvencies increased by three per cent in August 2023 to a total of 8,536 compared to July’s total of 8,290 and decreased by 10.9% compared to August 2022’s figure of 9,584. ‘The sad fact is that businesses are being hit from a variety of angles – and all these blows have an effect on their bottom line’ figures were their highest for this month in four years as a mixture of long-term economic issues, director fatigue and creditor pressure saw more companies enter an insolvency process in an attempt to resolve their financial issues or shut their doors. “Creditors’ Voluntary Liquidations remain high as more and more directors choose to wind down their firms, while compulsory liquidation numbers were at their highest this August for four years as creditors continue to pursue the money they are owed. “August’s administrations figures were the highest monthly figure we’ve seen since January 2019, which is a sign that more and more businesses are at a point where they need specialist help.

What businesses need to know - Terrorism Bill 2023 Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Bill 2023 AKA Martyn’s Law

For enhanced duty premises or qualifying public events (with public capacity over 800:

This is a Bill which has been introduced following the Manchester Arena bombing and following enquiry. This may be relevant to any Hampshire Chamber of Commerce Members who have areas where the public may be present in large numbers e.g. retail, schools, care homes, entertainment venues, hotels etc. or those who arrange large events. It is worth noting this only applies to members of the public, not employees. The bill at the moment is yet to be completely finalised, as it still has to go through the home office select committee and then receive royal ascent. But as it is written at the moment the following are likely to be the requirements.

There will be enhanced duties for larger premises and events, in simple summary these will include: • An enhanced terrorism risk assessment

For qualifying premises (any premises with a public capacity of more than 100 persons):

“The sad fact is that businesses are being hit from a variety of angles – and all these blows have an effect on their bottom line. Cost inflation has been a problem for some time and while this is expected to ease it is still sitting higher than many had predicted. Furthermore, interest rates remain at a 15-year high meaning that the cost of servicing debt has increased. “As a result of this, upward pressure on pay is continuing, while recruitment is a challenge, and people are still cautious about spending money on anything other than the essentials. It’s unlikely the picture will improve in the near future as people and businesses face the prospect of increased energy bills, and people start watching their spending even more closely. “Our message to directors is simple: be alert to signs your business could be financially distressed and seek advice as soon as they show themselves. If you’re having problems paying wages, staff or suppliers, if stock is starting to pile up, or if you’re worried about your business and its finances, that’s the time to speak to a qualified advisor. Garry is an Associate Director in the recovery and restructuring services department at professional services group Evelyn Partners’ Southampton office. He added: “We know how hard it is to talk about your money worries, but having that conversation is a critical step to finding a solution. Being brave and seeking advice when your worries are new nearly always leads to better outcomes than if you’d waited until the problem got worse, and it gives you more options for improving your situation and more time to consider how you move forward. Most R3 members will offer a free consultation to potential clients so they can learn more about the challenges they face with their finances and outline the potential options for improving them.”

• Security measures to be in place which will include: Arrangements for monitoring of the public Arrangements for the control of movement in and out Procedures for a terrorist event (inc. alerting emergency services, evacuation, bringing in to make safe, alerting persons) • Measures to secure information which could be used to plan or execute terrorism (i.e. locking away of building plans or information on security measures)

• A responsible person will need to be appointed for each of your qualifying premises.

• A ‘Designed Senior Officer’ will be needed which must be a Director, Senior Manager, Company Secretary or similar)

• That premises will need to be registered with the secretary of state (assume this will be an online registration)

• A security plan for the building or event must be prepared.

• The responsible person will need to make a ‘standard terrorism evaluation’ of the premises which in summary will contain the following: Evaluation of the types of terrorism likely at the premises Measures to reduce the likelihood of terrorism Measures to reduce the likelihood of physical harm from terrorism

It is also worth noting that where you have stores inside a shopping centre, that the store would need to produce the standard terrorism evaluation, not the shopping centre (as would all the other stores in the shopping centre). There are still some details which will be clarified by further regulation and there will likely be a ‘transitional period’ to allow businesses to implement the above (it’s not uncommon for these to be about 18 months after the new act is made official).

Emergency procedures How people will be informed of arrangement The evaluation will need to be reviewed every 12 months or following any material change to the workplace. • Terrorism protection training will have to be given to any worker who will have responsibilities for actions in the event of a terrorist attack (e.g. locking entrance/exits or guiding members of the public to a safe place). That training will include: Likely types of terrorism to occur at the premises

CHAMBER POLICY

Portico celebrate commitment to paying Living Wage Portico has been accredited as a Living Wage Employer. Their Living Wage commitment will see everyone working at Portico receive a minimum hourly wage of £10.90, higher than the government minimum for over 23s, which currently stands at £10.42 per hour. Portico is based in the south-east, a region where over nine per cent of all jobs pay less than the real Living Wage - around 374,000 jobs. Despite this, Portico has committed to pay the real Living Wage and deliver a fair day’s pay for a hard day’s work. The real Living Wage is the only rate calculated according to the costs of living. It provides a voluntary benchmark for employers that wish to ensure their staff earn a wage they can live on, not just the government minimum. Since 2011 the Living Wage movement has delivered a pay rise to over 450,000 people and put over £2 billion extra into the pockets of low paid workers.

‘By becoming an accredited real living wage employer it is the right thing to do by our staff’ Melanie Bunting, HR business partner at Portico, said: “We know all our staff working across the business are essential for the continued success of Portico and the excellent service our customers receive. By becoming an accredited real living wage employer it is the right thing to do by our staff. With many of our employees living in the local area, it will also benefit the local community as well.” Katherine Chapman, Director, Living Wage Foundation, added: “We’re delighted that Portico has joined the movement of over 12,000 responsible employers across the UK who voluntarily commit to go further than the government minimum to make sure all their staff earn enough to live on. “They join thousands of small businesses, as well as household names such as Burberry, Barclays, Everton Football Club and many more. These businesses recognise that paying the real Living Wage is the mark of a responsible employer and they, like Portico, believe that a hard day’s work deserves a fair day’s pay.”

Rise in firms that are drawing profits that aren’t there irector owner companies in the UK are continuing to fall into the trap of drawing dividends even when distributable reserves aren’t there to take out profits. The alarm call to hundreds of thousands of off-payroll freelancers has been sounded by Chris Tate (pictured), a restructuring and recovery partner with UK top ten accountancy firm Azets. Chris said: “This has been an age-old trap whereby companies become accustomed to drawing a mix of dividends and salary so as to minimise their personal tax bill. “While this is a validly commercial approach during good times, if trading performance takes a turn for the worse, the director owners can quickly fall into the trap of drawing dividends unlawfully which can be subsequently clawed back if the company cannot avoid formal insolvency. “Following the recent uptick in formal insolvencies following the pandemic, we are coming across more cases of this than usual. This is particularly prevalent with Personal Service Companies – PSCs. “While self-employed contractors may well be excellent at the service they provide, some may well lack understanding about what they are legally entitled to take as dividends, especially if they rely on dividends instead of a PAYE salary for tax purposes, which includes not paying

D

National Insurance contributions and not having tax deducted at source. “They are often reliant on their professional advisers to warn them of such pitfalls. However professional advisers are often working on historic data and by the time the issue is identified, it is often too late. “The simple fact is that director shareholders are not entitled to dividends if distributable reserves on the annual balance sheet aren’t there to draw down on profits. “In our digital age, there is no excuse for financial ignorance – the IT and software is available to provide realtime management information. Failing that, the director should be able to pull off manual monthly reports to show whether there are surplus net assets after accruing for all liabilities each month. “Anecdotally, we are seeing many instances where companies don’t have proper processes in place to protect themselves if the trading dashboard starts flashing orange or red. Chris added: “Concerned director owners should seek professional advice at the earliest opportunity when, first, they see a sustained drop in profitability, and, secondly, their balance sheet capital reserves are heading towards zero. “If caught early enough, the unlawful dividend trap can be averted and the chances to turnaround or restructure the business are improved.”

‘Many venue managers hold a wealth of knowledge on what’s available in local reach’

s Christmas quickly approaches it’s time to start thinking about corporate events. Some companies have already booked Christmas venues and are busy choosing dinner menus and sorting the Secret Santa. For others it’s the perfect time to start thinking about events for the following year. There are a few tips that those in the hospitality and leisure industry can pass on, which will help ensure you get the best out of your events, no matter what their purpose.

Making the most of the venue Your venue may be able to support in ways you don’t naturally anticipate, above and beyond suitable seasonal menus. Many venue managers hold a wealth of knowledge on what’s available in local reach. Haslar Marina is part of a wider group which operates The Lightship and The Creek restaurants, along with many additional facilities around the marina including hotel, conference, and leisure facilities. Often the team can help ease the pain of planning a multifaceted corporate day, by offering a one stop shop approach. Almost like your very own party planners! Getting there Often guests attending corporate events can forget about the logistics of getting to and from an event until a few days before. When starting to think about booking your corporate event it is worth anticipating guests needs by looking at local parking, public transport routes, and general ease of getting to your chosen venue. Knowing how late public transport is running into the evening, or how close a taxi rank is, can help relieve the pressure from guests who might want to leave celebrations early in less connected areas.

Accommodation When planning hotels for your guests it’s easy to get carried away booking the most cost effective, or the most opulent option your favourite booking site has to offer. Before you book, consider your guests. Many late-night venues have opening hours beyond the capability of local transport connections, which might be part of the motivation to book guest rooms. You may also want to consider how far guests will want to walk late at night. Complexes like Haslar Marina often have rooms within a stone’s throw, some owned and operated by boatfolk, others with well-known operators. Other activities In winter months it is easy to focus on keeping guests warm and dry. However, if you are looking into the future, you may be focused on team building, business conferences or wellness days. The warmer months can open up a plethora of outdoor activities. It’s well reported that being close to mountains, woodlands and water can promote a huge sense of wellbeing, so think about using the natural assets of our landscape to build into your day. Mountains and woodlands can be less accessible if your event needs corporate entertainment space, however Hampshire is abundant with waterways, why not think about integrating water sports such as paddle boarding into your day, or if your group is less inclined to take a dip, maybe a boat trip along the local coast. Whether your event is big or small there is always a way to make your guests feel their needs have been anticipated, and you have left them feeling positive about the time they have spent with you. FOCUS FEATURE: CORPORATE CHRISTMAS

A meaningful

Christmas party By Francesca Hughes (pictured), Event Marketing Manager, the National Museum of the Royal Navy

W

ith the festive season creeping up on us, it's time to start organising your work Christmas party. However, with an abundance of venues and festive packages to choose from, it can feel overwhelming for party organisers to know where to begin.

We all know the basics: Step 1 - Find a venue Step 2 - Choose a theme Step 3 - Select a caterer Step 4 - Decide on entertainment Step 5 - Send out the invites While these are all essential steps to plan a work Christmas party, it can all seem a little run-of-the-mill. It’s important to recognise that Christmas parties play a much more vital role than simply a staff social, they present an opportunity to thank employees for their hard work, boost staff morale and create lasting memories to share with colleagues; but what if your party could also make a difference and give back to the community? Have you considered choosing a heritage venue to host your party? Chances are you might not have, and you wouldn’t be alone in this. So, we’re here to shake up the norm and explore alternative venue options that can make your festive party even more special. You might be wondering why organisations should consider heritage venue spaces as opposed to standard hotels and restaurants; but there is so much more to historic museums and galleries than you might think. 44 BUSINESS VOICE Q4 2023

Firstly, what's more iconic than hosting a party onboard a Victorian warship (although we may be a little biased on this one!). Heritage sites are an integral part of our history, culture and communities. They help to maintain and preserve incredible stories, which educate and inspire all generations. Secondly, once you start looking around, you might be surprised by what you find in your local area. There are some incredibly inspiring venues out there to suit every budget, and the best thing is whichever one you choose, you’re doing more than just booking a uniquely memorable venue. You are actively contributing to the conservation of history. This is because every penny you spend through venue hire goes straight into conserving and preserving of these heritage sites for everyone for the future to enjoy. Thirdly, opting for a heritage venue could be just the thing that makes your work Christmas party bigger and better than previous years. From historic buildings, treasured collections (and did we mention a certain historic warship?), it creates something a little different giving employees a real buzz and turning office party dread into office party envy. Lastly, it’s simple and easy to do. Heritage venues welcome the opportunity to create something uniquely special for you and your guests. What’s more, giving back to the community through your venue choice will show your employees that the festive season is so much more than hitting sales targets and strategy planning. Giving back to the community is an important part of your company’s mission and values. So, what are you waiting for? Be unique and elevate your work Christmas party to a whole new level this year.

Flying high and saving people’s lives Partner your business with a local, life-saving charity, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance

‘It’s crucial to understand each business, get to know your needs and form a plan of how we can work together’

veryone knows someone who has needed an air ambulance. Do you? Maybe it was your mum or dad, brother or sister, aunt or uncle. Maybe it was a friend or neighbour, a colleague or a cousin. Every year, thousands of people in our region need emergency critical care from Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance. Nobody knows when or if they’re going to need the help of an air ambulance and its crew, but a cardiac arrest, a fall from height or a road traffic collision can happen to anyone. Anywhere. Any time. And that’s when our pilots, dispatchers, doctors and specialist paramedics are there for you – bringing the skills and equipment of a hospital emergency department to your side. But did you know that your local air ambulance is a charity? A charity that relies entirely on the generosity from groups, clubs, individuals and businesses – businesses just like yours. Why partner your business with a charity? Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance Support Engagement Manager, Jill McDonagh, has got some top tips on what makes a great charity partnership and details how we can help achieve your goals. There are a variety of reasons to form a charity partnership: • Meet your corporate social responsibility objectives • Team building • Volunteering opportunities • Brand promotion • Boost staff morale • Networking • Winning new customers We don’t have a one-size-fits-all approach to our patients, so why should we have one for our charity partners? Each partnership is unique. It’s crucial to understand each business, get to know your needs and form a plan of how we can work together. It’s about being honest and open. Once we know exactly what you want, we can devise a plan to deliver the agreed objectives. The focus will always be on engagement – in our experience, that’s what makes the best charity partnership. What will success look like for you? If I ask you in 12 months’ time, ‘has the partnership been successful?’, how will we measure that?

Your dedicated team member who will be their main point of contact, with the support of our wider team. We will regularly assess the partnership and communicate with you to make sure we’re keeping on track to deliver the best outcomes. As a charity partner of Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance, you could be looking forward to an exciting and mutually beneficial new relationship with a charity this year. And you can be sure that your support will help us be there for our next patient. A life saved We respond to an average of five patients every day. Patients like Claire Clark, who suffered a devastating brain injury when she was hit by a runaway motorbike while walking on a pavement with her husband and two young children. Claire was treated and flown to the nearest specialist hospital for life-saving surgery.

Claire Clark and her family

Claire said: “Had it not been for the air ambulance taking me from Basingstoke to University Hospital Southampton, I would have died due to the pressure and bleed on my brain. They’re who we all rely on without even realising it.” The next steps If you can see you and your colleagues partnering with an innovative, caring and professional charity, get in touch with us today. We would love to hear from you and tell you more about how you can make a difference to lives in your community. Together, we can continue to save lives, strengthen our community, and unlock new horizons for your business. Q4 2023 BUSINESS VOICE 47

How to choose a charity

There are many benefits for businesses that want to adopt a charity. As well as doing good in the community, being seen as a business that takes Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) seriously can increase your reputation and profit margin, boost employee happiness and serve as an excellent recruitment tool. But how do you choose the right charity to work with? Business Voice offers its top tips. When the stars align A great place to start would be looking for a charity that matches your company’s ethos and values. It’s also a bonus if you can match up your skills and knowledge too – if you work with people, then a charity that supports the disenfranchised and vulnerable would be a natural fit. If you’re an environmental firm, then an environmental charity would welcome your expertise. Making sure you’re on the same page will lead to a successful working relationship, and both you and your chosen charity will be able to reap the rewards. Transparency and impact If you’re choosing to fundraise for your chosen charity, then its important you know exactly where that money will be going. You can find a list of registered charities in England and Wales on gov.uk, which includes the charity’s aims, income and financial records – important information to seek out, because if you back an untrustworthy charity, then ultimately your customers won’t trust you. It’s also important to look at the charity’s impact. Find out how it spends donations, what it has accomplished so far, and what goals it is working 48 BUSINESS VOICE Q4 2023

FOCUS FEATURE: CHARITABLE CAUSES, PROMOTION & PARTNERSHIP

A matter of opinion It’s important that you pick a charity that your employees and customers can get behind – especially if you’re looking to them to get involved with fundraising and volunteering! Include them the selection process – you can ask your staff and customers to nominate a charity that means something to them, for example. Invite your shortlisted charities into the workplace to present to your staff and key customers/stakeholders, and put the final decision down to a vote. If your staff feel like they are part of the decision, they’ll be more motivated to offer their support.

‘It’s important that you pick a charity that your employees and customers can get behind – especially if you’re looking to them to get involved with fundraising and volunteering’

Look closer to home There are a lot of well-known, national charities doing great work up and down the country. There are also a lot of smaller charities right on your doorstep that are playing a part in improving the local community, so you may want to consider lending your support to one of those instead. Opting to work with a local charity has many benefits. Chiefly, your customers will be able to see first-hand the work that you are doing, rather than just taking your word for it! Demonstrating your value in this way can bring a real boost to customer retention and satisfaction. Additionally, you’ll be able to lend visibility to the charity and give them a bigger profile, which will in turn put your name in front of more potential customers. It’s a win-win! Finally, you’ll be helping to support and strengthen the local economy, which will benefit everyone.

Mission to light up hotel grounds n a spirited endeavour to rekindle the fading glowworm population in the UK, The Elvetham Hotel is embarking on a remarkable project. The hotel is releasing thousands of glowworm larvae, along with radiant adults, into its grounds, birthing England's exclusive bioluminescent gardens. Born from a dedicated collaboration between the hotel and esteemed ecologists Derek Gow and Peter Cooper, the project is poised to evolve into a unique spectacle in the years to come. Glowworms (Lampyris Noctiluca), the sole native glowing creatures of England, have woven their luminous radiance into the very fabric of British culture, garnering admiration from luminaries as diverse as William Shakespeare to Winston Churchill. Regrettably, their brilliance has been gradually dimming, with the UK's glowworm population plummeting by seventy-five percent since 2001. Culprits include shifting climate patterns, the modern penchant for manicured rural landscapes, the decline of wild meadows, and the pervasive glow of light pollution. Over the past three years, The Elvetham Hotel has undertaken

the mantle of revival. Collaborating with ecologists Gow and Cooper, the hotel has ardently fostered the breeding of thousands of glowworms in captivity, releasing them thoughtfully across their grounds. Serving as a haven for these entrancing creatures, the hotel meticulously restored wildflower meadows and cultivated naturefriendly scrublands within their historic gardens. A precisely orchestrated lighting system, carefully synchronised to minimise disruptions to the glowing females, has been implemented. He said: “These experiences can profoundly impact children. They can proudly gaze at these tiny creatures and declare, ‘we played a role in this.’ Nurturing such formative connections is pivotal for the stewardship of our shared planet.” "And for night tapers crop th eir waxen thighs, / And light them at the fiery glow-worms' eyes / To have my love to bed, and to arise." - Titania A Midsummer Night's Dream Visit: elvethamhotel.co.uk Q4 2023 BUSINESS VOICE 53

T Level sets young learner up in new career driven and hardworking T Level student has secured his first job in the construction industry thanks to impressing bosses during an industrial placement. Louie Kattenhorn (pictured), who studied a T Level in Design, Surveying & Planning for Construction at HSDC’s South Downs Campus, is now working as an Assistant Project Manager at Peter Marsh Consulting (PMc) after securing the role following the successful completion of his T Level studies. Before commencing his studies with HSDC, Louie had previously worked alongside his dad in his groundwork business which he

believes enabled him to demonstrate his knowledge during his placement with PMc. This allowed Louie to further impress bosses during this period which then led to an interview for a fulltime position at the organisation. Louie had originally planned to go to university to study Quantity Surveying as he was keen to be involved in the construction industry due to enjoying seeing projects through from start to finish. However, his placement made him realise he wanted to focus on Project Management as a career path and he then accepted the role as Assistant Project Manager with PMc.

He said: “My favourite pa rt of studying T Levels was the work placement that I had to complete in order to complete the course. I think the experience that I earned from this placement really assisted me when completing the end of year ESP and it gave me specific knowledge of the industry that I would not have learned within a classroom.” When asked what his advice would be for prospective T Level students, Louie said: “Absolutely go for it. It’s a great balance between learning core

information, learning more specific areas of your course, and obviously, the opportunity to complete the placement. The T Level courses really do have the potential to unlock a career path that you wouldn’t necessarily believe that you would go down. I absolutely would not be in my current position if it was not for T Levels.” Visit the HSDC course finder to find out more about studying a T Level at: www.hsdc.ac.uk/course-finder

Government launches financial scheme to support shipbuilding in the United Kingdom What is the Shipbuilding Credit Guarantee Scheme (SCGS)? On 26 July 2023, the Department for Business and Trade (DBT) launched the Shipbuilding Credit Guarantee Scheme. This scheme is a sector-specific finance instrument that facilitates access to finance for vessel owners and operators wishing to build, refit, retrofit or repair vessels at a UK shipyard. The scheme is available across the UK and is delivered by UK Export Finance (UKEF). Applicants do not need to be exporters to make an application through the scheme. The scheme provides a partial guarantee to a partnering lender, covering up to 80% of the value of the loan. This facility enables UK shipyards to receive payment as though it was a cash contract, while the buyer can access extended repayment terms. The loan, which is on market terms, will typically be repaid over a period of between two to 12 years, while the shipyard receives payment via the credit facility as amounts fall due under the commercial contract. What types of vessels could be built? The scheme is open to most vessel types. The UK is particularly well placed to excel in the construction of more technically complex vessels, such as hybrid vessels, ferries, and crew transfer vessels and service operation vessels which support the offshore wind sector. What are some of the benefits of the scheme? The benefits of the Shipbuilding Credit Guarantee Scheme include:

• the shipyard is paid as though it has a cash contract • the buyer or borrower has time to pay over a number of years and can borrow at fixed or floating rates • the lender is protected against non-payment of the instalments of principal and interest due under the guaranteed loan. The scheme forms part of the Government’s £4bn plan to revitalise UK shipbuilding and coastal communities through the National Shipbuilding Strategy Refresh, announced last year.

‘Shipbuilding supports 42,600 jobs nationwide and adds £2.4bn to the economy every year’ The UK competes globally in the manufacture of high-value, technically complex, smaller vessels. The shipbuilding industry is a growing part of the UK’s new green economy. Supporting the purchase, construction and repair of high-value vessels will encourage continued investment in innovative, sustainable, low-carbon maritime technologies. This scheme will act as an enabler for vessel owners and operators seeking access to finance to build in the UK. Shipbuilding supports 42,600 jobs nationwide and adds £2.4bn to the economy

every year. The wider maritime sector employs 113,000 people nationwide and contributes £11bn to the economy. How will the implementation of the scheme work? A lender, shipyard or prospective buyer would approach UKEF and would identify a transaction that may be suitable for the Scheme. A credit assessment would be conducted on the prospective buyer. This would include reviewing the last three years’ worth of accounts and taking a view on whether additional credit enhancements would be required in the form of parental guarantees or security. UKEF and the Department for Business and Trade (DBT) would be guided by the lender as to the optimum structure of the transaction and the security package, but in most scenarios DBT would expect to have at least a first priority mortgage over the vessel, and this would be considered as a potential credit risk mitigant alongside the strength of the buyer and their balance sheet. Security arrangements would be pari-passu between DBT and commercial parties. All borrowers would have to be sufficiently credit-worthy, and the scheme is not open to borrowers in financial distress. The Department for Business and Trade and UKEF actively encourage all prospective applicants to contact customer.service@ukexportfinance.gov.uk or call +44(0)20 7271 8010, for more information, in the first instance. Unlock the benefits of ISO standards

Sara Duff, Smart Quality Services

Does my business need to be ISO 9001 certified? There is a very common misconception that ISO standards are only relevant for large companies and those in certain sectors like construction and manufacturing, and so often are ignored by smaller businesses. However, ISO standards are applicable to any sized company in any industry sector. ISO 9001 is the most widely recognised and adopted standard for Quality Management and has been implemented by over one million organisations in over 180 countries. It acts as a valuable framework to help any business improve the quality of the service or product they deliver to their customers. So, what are the benefits from attaining ISO 9001 certification? Enables you to reach larger companies and new markets. Many larger companies use formalised procurement processes which very often

stipulate the requirement for ISO 9001 certification. Increased customer satisfaction Maintaining happy customers is essential to achieving valuable repeat business. ISO 9001 helps you to identify present customer needs, as well as to identify and evaluate future requirements. Most importantly it helps you to measure client satisfaction and to identify any areas for improvement in the delivery of your product or service. Market reputation Holding ISO 9001 certification demonstrates your organisation’s

‘Implementing ISO 9001 enables a business to gain objective nonbiased data enabling a risk-based approach to any decision-making’

commitment to delivering a quality product or service and will result in improved market reputation. Reduced costs and increased efficiency It enables a business to adopt best practice and to identify any functional areas where costsavings can be delivered, and areas of improvement can be made, ensuring that improved efficiencies can be achieved, and all limited resources are optimised. Evidence-based information for improved business decisionmaking Only too often, businesses lack quantifiable evidence based factual information, and therefore make decisions subjectively. Implementing ISO 9001 enables a business to gain objective nonbiased data enabling a risk-based

approach to any decision-making. Fosters improved employee engagement There is a requirement within the ISO 9001 standard for identification of all internal, as well as external, stakeholders relevant to the Quality Management System, and for communication of the Quality Policy to all employees to ensure they all understand how they contribute to it. This will lead to improved internal communication wit h a likely outcome of fostering a more motivated and engaged workforce. To explore how ISO 9001 could benefit your business please contact Sara Duff of Smart Quality Services on Telephone: 01202 374272/ 07514 701994 or via email: s.duff@smartqualityservices .co.uk Q4 2023 BUSINESS VOICE 59

Making GDPR more simple ew data laws are set to cut down on pointless paperwork for businesses and reduce annoying cookie pop-ups. The new Data Protection and Digital Information (No. 2) Bill was unveiled by Technology Secretary Michelle Donelan earlier this year and is currently making its way through Parliament. The government says that a new commonsense-led UK version of the EU’s GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) will reduce costs and burdens for British businesses and charities, remove barriers to international trade and cut the number of repetitive data collection pop-ups online. Strengthening the data regime will save the UK economy more than £4bn over the next ten years and ensure that privacy and data protection are securely protected, says the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT). When enacted, the Bill will make changes to the UK GDPR, the Data Protection Act 2018 and the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations. The government expects the new regime to build on the UK’s high standards for data protection and privacy and ensure data adequacy while moving away from the ‘one-

N

size-fits-all’ approach of the European Union’s GDPR. Ms Donelan said: “Co-designed with business from the start, this new Bill ensures that a vitally important data protection regime is tailored to the UK’s own needs and our customs. “Our new laws release British businesses from unnecessary red tape to unlock new discoveries, drive forward next generation technologies, create jobs and boost our economy.” Data-driven trade generated 85% of the UK’s total service exports and contributed an estimated £259bn to the economy in 2021. Businesses already compliant with the UK GDPR will not be required to make any changes as a result of the Bill. We expect the Bill to deliver: • A simple, clear and business-friendly framework that will not be difficult or costly to implement – taking the best elements of GDPR and providing businesses with more flexibility about how they comply with the new data laws • Maintained data adequacy with the EU, and wider international confidence in the UK’s comprehensive data protection standards

• A reduction in the amount of paperwork organisations need to complete to demonstrate compliance • Support for international trade without creating extra costs for businesses if they are already compliant with current data regulations • Greater confidence for organisations about when they can process personal data without consent • Increased public and business confidence in AI technologies by clarifying the circumstances in which robust safeguards apply to automated decision-making. If businesses can throw off some of the shackles of the previous GDPR regulations, while the protection they delivered is maintained, we will be able to look forward with greater confidence and clarity. Bringing skill and style to live events Matt Bunday (pictured) of RSWSound Ltd on the importance of ‘finesse’ within events he Oxford learner dictionary defines ‘finesse’ as “Great skill and style in doing something” and at RSWSound Ltd we believe that this definition should be a focus for all event producers and contractors. Think back to the last event you organised or attended, and consider the complexities that went into it. I would propose that they likely included two key principles: people and equipment. When considering ‘people’, an organiser may be either putting on a rehearsed event to thousands of people or facilitating multiple groups and organisations engaging with it live. With regards to ‘equipment’, I

T

bet we can all point towards events with exceptional production values, such as international rock concerts or complex conferences with hybrid themes. However, I suspect we can also remember examples

embrace the need to bring ‘skill’ and ‘style’ to our events as a core tenet. Whether this involves having that extra conversation with the client about the right kind of microphone needed, or including one of our in-house

‘Investment into recruitment, training, and the right equipment can really take your event to another level’ where the systems haven’t quite delivered or when the needs of a client haven’t been understood. I would suggest that lots can go wrong in these parts of your event, so accuracy and competency are vital. RSWSound Ltd have learnt to

stage managers in the initial decision-making process to ensure accurate delivery. We believe that taking the time at the start of the process to really understand the needs of the client will ensure a more accurate final product. Some suggest that technical

companies are all largely similar and that selecting the cheapest will still yield results. This can be true if your production requirements are simple or you are happy to accept the risk of some uncertainty. RSWSound Ltd on the other hand, argue that the finer details matter. A live event is the combination of months or even years of planning and can be a sensitive occasion that requires ‘skill’ and ‘style’. So, the next time you review quotes from possible contractors, perhaps consider what skill and style they bring. Production contractors reflect on you and your event. Getting the right one is important and they may also amaze you with the ‘finesse’ that they bring!
