A

s summer gives way to autumn, there’s a real sense of momentum across our region – and plenty to share as we head into a busy few months.

We’ve seen a change of leadership at the very top of Government, with Andy Burnham now in office as Prime Minister. Having come to the role from his time as Mayor of Greater Manchester, he brings a genuine understanding of what our regions can achieve when they’re backed to succeed. As a Chamber, we would very much hope to welcome him to the Humber before too long.

Ours is a region full of ambition, and there’s no better way to understand what our businesses can deliver than to see them first-hand. An early visit would send a strong signal that the Humber’s opportunities are firmly on the national agenda.

Closer to home, my warmest congratulations go to the HullBID team, who have secured a new five-year term with a fantastic 94.1% of the vote in favour. A result like that doesn’t happen by chance – it’s a testament to the tireless hard work of Fran, Raich and Mark, and a resounding vote of confidence in everything they do for the city. The new team wasted no time getting started, with their first event, Dino Day, taking place on Friday, 7 August. You can read the full story and see more pictures on pages six and seven.

Looking ahead, I’m delighted that November will bring a collaboration with the Norwegian British Chamber of Commerce to stage the Energetic Futures Conference in the Humber.

The Chamber teams have been working hard to arrange site visits on both sides of the Humber with key stakeholders for the delegates who will be flying in to explore renewables investment opportunities, so it’s a wonderful chance to showcase our region’s strengths on an international stage. It is hoped the Norwegian Ambassador to the UK will be attending a prestigious evening reception during the event.

And before then, do join us for our Afternoon Tea with a Twist speed networking event at the lovely Tickton Grange on Thursday, 8 October. It promises to be a relaxed and enjoyable way to make new connections.

Dino delight and ballot win: Great success for HullBID

H

ullBID racked up its second roaring success in a week as thousands of people descended on the city centre for the annual Dino Day just days after details were released of a resounding ballot win.

Dino Day again attracted huge crowds into the centre, boosting business for retail and hospitality outlets and BID organisers promises there will be more to come after securing an emphatic win in the ballot – the fourth since HullBID was approved as the first in Yorkshire 20 years ago.

The BID board, which is led by representatives of city centre businesses revealed that the ballot, which ended on Thursday 30 July, produced a turnout of 45.44% with BID securing 94.18% of votes cast.

Francesca Wagstaff-Sharp, the BID’s Business Liaison Officer, told members: “I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you for placing your trust in me and the rest of the team. We were bowled over when we heard the result, which we see as the most rewarding recognition of our work since HullBID started 20 years ago.

“As we promised during our campaign we are now working on ideas to boost the BID team and our board and to improve and enhance everything we do. The incredible Dino Day is just the start!”

Jim Harris, Chair of HullBID and General Manager of st Stephen’s Shopping Centre, said the yes vote was the highest yet and demonstrated the value of the organisation’s work for the city centre business community.

He said: “Our campaign focused on HullBID’s vital role supporting our partners in promoting and enhancing the incredible transformation which is taking place in our city centre.

“We’ve seen the investment of hundreds of millions of pounds in tourism and heritage with the Hull Maritime project, next level business space with C4DI and Monocle, and the completion of Castle Street, which opens up so many of our fantastic historic attractions and open spaces.

‘We were bowled over when we heard the result, which we see as the most rewarding recognition of our work’ “HullBID’s commitment is to work with our partners at Hull City Council and Humberside Police to improve safety and security and keep the streets clean, thereby providing the ideal environment for a vibrant programme of events which drive footfall and help businesses.

“I’m grateful to those partners for their ongoing support, to the HullBID team for their passion and commitment, and to the businesses themselves for giving us a massive vote of confidence.”

Mike Ross, Leader of Hull City Council, said: “I am extremely pleased to see HullBID has received such an overwhelming level of support in the latest ballot. This is testament to the support given to local businesses by the organisation and the vital role it plays for them in the city centre.

“This backing gives HullBID the mandate to make the changes it needs to make to help take the organisation into its next phase, allowing it to carry out the work in an even stronger manner in the future. Another column, another Prime Minister

I

sometimes need to pinch myself as a reminder that when I first started writing these pieces, Liz Truss had just departed 10 Downing Street. The famous old address has had no fewer than three occupants since then.

Current Prime Minister Andy Burnham (pictured) is still settling in along with his newlook cabinet following the departure – forced or otherwise – of Sir Keir Starmer.

Remember when we were told the grownups were back in the room after Labour’s General Election victory in 2024? Well, Burnham and a mix of old and new grown-ups are now in charge after yet another whirl of the Ministerial merry-go-round.

So what does this all mean for our neck of the woods?

The new Prime Minister has wasted no time in confirming his intention to switch the focus away from Westminster by opening Number 10 North in Manchester. As the northern branch of the PM’s office, it’s a strong statement of intent.

Burnham has also wasted no time in setting out a vision for elected regional mayors to play a much more prominent role in the delivery of local public services.

As the former Mayor of Greater Manchester, it’s perhaps no great surprise to see him pushing the devolution agenda harder and faster than before. The fact he gets the potential of local government and is a good communicator already puts him streets ahead of his predecessors.

I first saw him in action during the 2010 Labour leadership campaign when he appeared at a hustings in Hull with the other candidates.

Although he eventually got knocked out in the first round of voting, I thought he was streets ahead of the others on the night.

‘It’s often been said that mayor-led combined authorities should always be about place rather than politics’ I later watched him regularly in his former mayoral role at Transport for the North board meetings. Again, he was impressive on every occasion.

It’s often been said that mayor-led combined authorities should always be about place rather than politics and I already get the impression that Burnham wants to work with them rather than against them, which is surely what grownup politics is all about.

His previous appearances at Transport for the North were often dominated by debates about HS2 and Northern Powerhouse Rail, which brings me neatly back to that first column I penned for this magazine back in the day.

At the time, the wait for a long-awaited decision on electrification of the main line in and out of Hull was a hot topic. It still is for many people because a decision is still awaited.

A revived £54m Northern Powerhouse Rail scheme was announced in January but it didn’t include Hull. Since then, talk has turned to bimodal battery-operated electric trains and partial line charging.

Perhaps Burnham will recognise something needs to happen and make sure it does.

However, keep an eye on the Government’s plans to nationalise train services through the creation of Great British Railways.

As an open-access operator, Hull Trains not only receives no Government subsidy but also records much higher customer satisfaction ratings compared to state-run LNER while sharing the same East Coast Main Line route.

The Railways Bill currently going through Parliament offers no future safeguards for open-access operators like Hull Trains.

Maybe the new Prime Minister should pop across the Pennines and take a trip down to London to see how customer choice, lower fares and better connections works for previously under-served cities and boosts their regeneration.

Chamber Policy Hull & Humber Chamber of Commerce is the collective ‘Voice of Business’ across the Humber region representing the views and interests of our Members at local, regional and national levels.

QUARTERLY ECONOMIC SURVEY Q2 2026 In what many saw as a surprise move in light of the geo-political shocks of the Gulf and the Russia-Ukraine war, the Bank of England held interest rates at 3.75% in June.

That decision more or less coincided with the end of hostilities in the Middle East, but in the meantime, businesses in the Humber feared the worst about the rising costs of fuel and energy prices, on top of the double whammy of National Insurance and minimum wage increases, which had been a big hit for many businesses, particularly in the hospitality sector, although nationally, we didn’t see the rise in inflation many had predicted.

Businesses in the Humber who completed the survey said the both Home Sales and Home Orders had improved somewhat, but remained in negative territory.

Business confidence was still low however, with business reporting fears over Raw Material costs proving to be the biggest worries, with 34% more businesses noting their concerns.

Pay settlements and business finance were less of a concern this quarter.

Inflation and Competition were the biggest External Concerns flagged up by businesses, competition concerns up by 35% and inflationary fears rising by 24%. Tax increases were also a worry for 11% more firms surveyed this quarter.

Concerns over business rates and exchange rates were less of a worry this quarter. Cashflow in the last three months had improved slightly with the balance figure climbing by 34% back into positive territory.

Chamber Chief Executive Dr Ian Kelly, commented: “A pause in hostilities in the Middle East and a pleasing hold in interest rates by the Bank of England at its recent Monetary Policy Committee meeting was a bit of good news.

“This coincided with a slight improvement in the economy around the Humber.

However, many challenges still remain and business are facing an increasing cost burden which is straining their finances from several directions and it is clear that many are reluctant to invest in their futures, but are focusing on simply keeping their heads above water.”

Tributes paid to popular Town Crier

Michael Wood – a stalwart of Chamber Expo’s opening ceremony

he entire team at the Hull & Humber Chamber of Commerce was shocked and saddened to hear of the passing of popular Town Crier Michael Wood in July.

Only weeks before, Mike had done the traditional honours of opening Chamber Expo with his usual good humour and big voice, loud bell and a toot on his horn!

Mike had been the town crier for East Riding of Yorkshire Council since 1997 when he won a competition to fulfil the ceremonial role and was a three-time world champion.

A proud ex-Paratrooper, Mike had long since traded his red beret and Army fatigues for his green and gold robes, tricorn hat – and that bell!

The Chamber’s Managing Director, David Hooper, said: “Mike had been a stalwart of Chamber Expo long before I joined the Chamber, and he did a brilliant job of holding court at our opening ceremony every year.

“He was always happy to tour the stands, chat to exhibitors and pose for pictures with his infectious smile and good humour. He was a great character and always a pleasure to work with.

“All the team here at the Chamber were shocked to hear of his passing, we will all miss him, and our thoughts are with his family and friends at this terribly sad time.”

Are business rate cuts going far enough?

New Prime Minister Andy Burnham has announced a 20% cut in business rates for pubs, social clubs and live music venues, but the news has received a mixed response from local hoteliers.

The latest in a trio of announcements since he took over from Keir Starmer on 20 July was the toast of some venues, while others felt left out, or urging him to go further.

Commenting on behalf of the British Chambers of Commerce, Kate Shoesmith, Director of Policy and Insight at the BCC, said: “While news of a carve out for pubs, clubs and music venues is welcome, there are many other smaller hospitality companies facing an existential threat. Meanwhile at the other end of the scale, airports and hotel chains are already paying millions more.

“The last few years of Brexit, Covid, rising energy bills, wars and other geopolitical crises have pushed costs to record highs and these show no signs of waning.

“Our latest research shows more than a third of firms believe business rates are of more concern now than they were three months ago.

“Any action on rates is long overdue and very welcome, but root and branch reform of the system was a Labour manifesto commitment, and it is time to deliver on that promise.

“A step-by-step action plan is required. First, the government must mitigate the steep jumps

in bills across all sectors caused by the 2026 revaluation. That means introducing a single flat rate multiplier and making bills easier to understand.

“This shift should then jumpstart a more rigorous consultation with business on how to fully reform what is a complex and rigid system. The time for tinkering round the edges has long gone. What firms of all shapes and sizes need to see is a new plan for fair and proportionate business rates set out at the Autumn Budget. We stand ready and willing to help inform those plans.”

The Chair of the Chamber’s North East Lincolnshire Area Council and manager of St James hotel, Paul George, said: It’s a long time until April next year. We will see lot of

businesses go down. Hopefully, it’s for all leisure facility’s which have accommodation and bars under their premises umbrella”.

The owner of Healing Manor, hotelier Charlotte Bennett (pictured inset) said: “Any reduction in business rates is welcome, and it's encouraging to see movement in the right direction. However, for most hospitality businesses, a saving of around £1,100 barely scratches the surface of the financial pressures we’re facing.

“Hospitality doesn’t need meaningful support in nine months' time. It needs it now.

This isn't about asking for special treatment, it’s about creating a fair and balanced playing field for one of the UK’s largest employers and one of its most important social assets.”

Exciting new partnership sets sail for Matt P &O Ferries have a new man at the helm in Hull in the shape of Matt Woodhouse who was recently appointed Head of Routes – North Sea. Matt welcomed the Chamber’s Kay Bailey and David Hooper to his new offices overlooking the ferry terminal to find out more about the Chamber of Commerce and how he can get involved.

Matt, who follows in his father’s footsteps working with P&O in Hull, will be taking up his place on the Chamber’s historic Shipping,

Transport & Renewables Committee and is eager to get involved.

Fish Dock Group lands new Chief Exec

A

new era has begun with a new figurehead and new brand for a group of Grimsby companies at the heart of two of the town’s defining industries.

Andrew Oliver (pictured) is now Chief Executive of Grimsby Fish Dock Group, a subtle switch from the name Grimsby Fish Dock Enterprises, and one aimed at unifying the business units it sits behind.

The four distinct operational strands – Grimsby Fish Market, Port of Grimsby East, Grimsby Shipyard Services and Offshore Training Centre Grimsby – are all being refreshed, with a new brand identity and group website delivered by Fred Marketing.

The work has been driven by Andrew who served as chair of the organisation for four years, as it looks to unlock growth in the port-facing elements of the business.

While Grimsby Fish Market, with its daily fish auction, remains the iconic centrepiece and home of the head office operations, maritime activity and allied training have become significant revenue streams, with property and vessel maintenance provision also at the core.

Andrew, a highly respected maritime lawyer, said: “It is my absolute honour to become chief executive of Grimsby Fish Dock Group, an exciting family of allied companies united by the economy our geography has blessed us with, and our forebears have capitalised on.

“Grimsby remains a leading force in seafood, the UK capital for valueadded processing and a gateway to retail and hospitality markets, while proudly regaining a world-leading title in offshore wind operations and maintenance. Government delegation visits Humber Developments which will underpin the Humber’s economic future have been presented to delegates from two Government departments.

Chris Barton, Director of Local and International Growth at the Department for Business and Trade (DBT), visited the Humber alongside Government colleagues from both the DBT and the Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government.

The meeting, held at CATCH in Stallingborough, near Grimsby, provided an opportunity for industry leaders to showcase some of the projects which will support industrial growth and regeneration across the estuary.

Presentations were made by Humber Freeport alongside industry skills and training provider CATCH, Phillips 66, Uniper, Equinor, Greater Lincolnshire Combined County Authority and North East Lincolnshire Council.

The session was opened by Humber Freeport’s Head of Investment, Richard Beason, who set the scene and outlined the role of the freeport as a catalyst and accelerator of investment and growth.

During the visit, delegates sat down for a roundtable discussion focused on opportunities, and challenges, for the Humber. Conversation also centred on the support Government departments including DBT can provide which can unlock the region’s significant development pipeline.

Ongo is continuing its support to help young people gain skills, confidence and access to employment, at a time when national figures show an increase in unemployment.

Recent Government figures have highlighted a growing challenge for young people entering the labour market, with nearly one million aged 16–24 not in education, employment or training.

Against this backdrop, Ongo is delivering practical support to make people are not left behind. This includes: pre-apprenticeship programme; mentoring support; CV writing, interview and preparation; mental health and

life skills support and work placements and volunteering.

The impact of this support is already clear.

In 2025/26, Ongo helped 243 people into work, filled 96 permanent roles, and supported the creation or mentoring of 52 apprenticeships.

Hull University Teaching Hospitals, Novartis and Daisy Appeal are collaborating to expand advanced molecular imaging in Hull, improving access to specialist Gallium-PET diagnostics and supporting pioneering clinical research

Partnership to help save lives

H

ull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (HUTH) and Novartis have entered into a collaborative partnership to support diagnostic molecular imaging services and the newly launched Molecular Imaging Research Centre (MIRC) in Hull.

The partnership will see Novartis fund a physicist post for 27 months to support the introduction of a Gallium radiopharmaceutical service and GalliumPositron Emission Tomography (PET)

imaging capability at Castle Hill Hospital.

After this period, funding will be taken on by HUTH, supported by Daisy Appeal, which has developed and will operate the MIRC facilities.

Gallium-68 labelled radio-diagnostic agents are produced using a Gallium generator.

Because the isotope has a short half-life of just 68 minutes, transport to other sites is limited, making on-site production essential. With the recent acquisition of a Gallium generator, MIRC will soon begin producing these agents for clinical use in Hull.

Dr Saleem Azeem, Clinical Director, Molecular Imaging Research Centre, said: “The introduction of Gallium-PET services in Hull is expected to help address regional inequalities in access to advanced diagnostic imaging.

“Patients from centres without these facilities will be able to access molecular imaging at Hull, supporting clinical trial participation, therapy readiness and more equitable access to specialist scanning closer to home.”

What was your first job?

As a teenager, I had a variety of part-time jobs, including a paper round, working in a video rental shop (which definitely gives away my age!), and later at Toys “R” Us and Matalan.

After graduating from university, I began a 15year career as a primary school teacher. In 2017, I made the decision to leave teaching, building Harrisons of Hull from the ground up.

There are eight members of staff, including myself, with both full-time and part-time roles.

Historic firm looks towards the future

A

historic Hull construction company dating back to 1879 has completed a change at the top as it builds towards its 150-year milestone.

Andrew Kingston, Managing Director of Houlton since 2017, has retired from the Hullbased business and handed over to Mike Johnson.

Together with the senior management team they have re-energised the business of 130 people by focusing on quality, service, affordability and value, working together as joint managing directors during a handover period which began at the start of 2026.

Andrew joined Houlton as Head of Building and Maintenance in January 2000, becoming a Director 18 months later, and Managing Director in 2017. Mike arrived as a Joiner in

October 2000, rising through the ranks as a Site Manager, Contracts Manager, Operations Manager and then Operations Director.

Mike said: “I am incredibly proud and honoured to be taking on the role of managing director of a company with such a rich local history and heritage. Generations of dedicated people have built the reputation, values and trust that have made Houlton what it is today, and I am committed to protecting that legacy.

“While we celebrate our remarkable past, our focus is firmly on the future.

ReVolt Energy is the latest in a succession of businesses to join the Hull & Humber Chamber of Commerce to promote its work in the energy transition that is transforming the Humber.

ReVolt Energy is a solar panel end-of-life management company, recovering and recycling solar infrastructure across the United Kingdom and the United States.

Using patented laser delamination technology, ReVolt recovers up to 99% of the materials in an end-oflife panel at up to 99.9% purity, returning aluminium, silicon, silver, copper and high-grade glass to manufacturing supply chains.

It is the first solar recycler approved by both the UK Environment Agency and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.

ReVolt’s UK operations are based at Flixborough, North Lincolnshire, on the south bank of the Humber and within the region’s established industrial and metallurgical cluster. The location was chosen

deliberately. Flixborough sits at the intersection of three things ReVolt needs: the UK’s main hub for metals processing and metallurgical expertise, giving direct access to the industrial supply chains that will take the recovered materials;

‘We’re a young company with global ambitions’ established Humber logistics infrastructure, with Immingham and the wharf network providing sea and river access for inbound panel volumes from across the UK and Northern Europe; and a regional labour market.

partnership which brings together investors, entrepreneurs and business leaders is stepping up its campaign to support arts and culture in Hull after playing a pivotal role in the city’s latest festival success.

Hull Business Angels is exploring ways to build its membership and extend its reach, with existing members highlighting the potential benefits for the wider East Yorkshire region in terms of place, skills, culture and enterprise.

The organisation held a follow-up meeting within days of the lights going down at Humber Street Sesh, where it sponsored the main stage and has provided a lifeline for the event over the last 10 years.

Apprentices flourish at Spencer Group Hull-based multi-disciplinary engineering business Spencer Group is celebrating the achievements of five of its degree apprentices who have all graduated with First-Class Honours degrees.

Tom Dubej, Oliver Wilkinson, Matthew Hunter, Alistair Sceats and Jack Waslin, all 24, earned the highest academic classifications in their respective degrees, which they have completed while working in full-time roles at Spencer Group.

The top grades achieved by the five apprentices highlight the outstanding success of the company’s employer-led apprenticeship programmes, which represent a major, long-term investment in both its people and the future capability of the business.

Since joining Spencer Group as engineering apprentices six years ago, the five colleagues have all gained HNC, NVQ and HND qualifications before moving onto undergraduate degrees.

From fridge raiders wreaking havoc every lunchtime, to disagreements over ideas and opinions, even the smallest conflict can have a big impact on productivity, morale and motivation – which makes conflict resolution an essential skill to have in the workplace. Conflict resolution training will not only teach your staff how to communicate effectively, compromise and collaborate with each other, but it could also boost your bottom line too.

Business Intelligence explores some of the benefits of investing in conflict resolution training for your staff.

Improve communication Conflict resolution training can improve communication skills right across your workforce. It will give your staff the tools to adequately articulate their issues calmly, and teach them how to implement outcomes that work for everybody. Conflict resolution training can overcome this by helping your staff build solid working relationships; they will be taught to recognise each other’s strengths and the art of constructive feedback – how to give it and, most importantly, how to take it.

Work as a team With conflict resolution training, you can also improve your staff’s team-building skills.

Through the training, they will learn how to discuss, rather than debate (or argue!) the issues at hand. They will also learn how to understand people with different points of view and how to work together without bias getting in the way.

Additionally, working on their techniques to manage conflicts will also have a positive effect on your staff’s problem-solving skills, as they will learn how to work together to reach a common goal.

Boost productivity Ask yourself how much time and energy are wasted on workplace conflicts. Disputes take vital time away from projects, which can mean deadlines are missed, money is wasted and opportunities are lost. As well as helping you uncover the training needs of your current employees, strategic workforce planning will also help you align your recruitment strategy with your longterm goals. But where to start? Business Intelligence offers its top tips.

Consider your goals If strategic workforce planning is about making sure your people are able to deliver your company’s goals, a natural first step is to identify the short-, medium- and long-term objectives. Once you’ve figured out what you want to achieve, you can identify what you need in terms of the right skills and talent. It’s important to include your stakeholders, HR and senior management in this stage as they can all help you identify and outline your goals and the skills you need.

Assess your current workforce What kind of shape is your workforce in? What people and skills do you already have in your organisation and, more importantly, what skills are missing? When it comes to analysing your current workforce, there are two key areas to focus on: Quality: Assess your employees on their current performance and future potential. Is anyone holding you back? Conversely, are there any breakout stars brimming with great ideas?

Quantity: Assess how big your workforce is, paying particular attention to employee turnover, the effectiveness of your recruitment campaigns and the frequency of internal promotions.

Finding and filling skills gaps Once you’ve a clearer idea of how many staff you have and the skills you have on board you will be able to better identify current and future skills gaps. If you have, for example, many staff you have of retiring age, you can begin to seriously think about how you can fill the gaps they’ll leave behind. Will it be more economical

to promote and train existing staff, or do you need to bring in new blood with fresh ideas in order to reach your goals? As well as traditional recruitment methods, there are other options such as apprenticeships and training schemes.

Preparing for the future How will future technology, automation and other advancements affect your workforce needs? Of course, you can’t predict the future, but strategic workforce planning should help you better anticipate future trends. Laceby Manor: One of Lincolnshire’s Leading Destinations

embers of the Chamber’s North East Lincolnshire Area Council enjoyed a visit to Laceby Manor Spa and Golf Resort in June where they were welcomed by owner and CEO Roger Burnett.

Roger recounted to members the story of how he took over a rather tired golf course and transformed it into one of the region’s leading tourist destinations.

Roger’s insightful presentation also highlighted the most recent developments and his future plans for the impressive venue.

Laceby Manor has undergone a remarkable transformation in the decade, evolving from a traditional 18 hole golf course into one of Lincolnshire’s most dynamic leisure, hospitality, and wellness destinations.

When Roger bought the venue, he acquired a golf course with potential, but limited diversification. His vision was clear – elevate the site into a high quality, multi faceted destination that would attract visitors from across the UK while supporting the local economy.

One of his earliest priorities was improving the golf course and establishing Laceby Manor as an aspirational wedding venue. Today, the estate hosts around 42 weddings a year.

Accommodation has been central to Laceby Manor’s growth. What began with 11 lodges has expanded to 74, with planning permission secured for a further 85. The lodges, crafted from Scandinavian cedar

and built to last 50 years, maintain a 96% occupancy rate.

With around 400 guests each week, Laceby Manor has become a significant contributor to local tourism and spending. Lodges range from luxury hot tub retreats to pods and hotel style suites. Around 60% of lodges are third party owned, reflecting strong investor confidence in the site.

The Laceby Manor Spa has quickly become one of the estate’s standout features. This boutique, award winning facility employs 20 therapists and offers a premium experience including a hydrotherapy pool, Finnish and herbal saunas, natural outdoor swimming ponds, reflection rooms, and personalised service from spa butlers.

The Fitness Suite serves local members, blending gym access with spa benefits. Meanwhile, the Oak Room Bar and Pizzeria has become a bustling social hub.

Corporate clients are increasingly part of Laceby Manor’s ecosystem, particularly those in the renewables sector. A boardroom and on site marketing team (RBP Agency) support business activity across the estate.

During his presentation, Roger outlined several major developments underway, including solar panel installation to generate renewable energy and feed power back into the grid. Contactless check ins are now operational, improving guest convenience, a new lodge reception facility has been created to enhance arrivals and construction of two indoor padel courts and a foyer café are all coming soon.

The estate now employs around 100 staff, and remains a proud family business, with Roger working alongside his son to guide its future.

Hungry diner’s get a taste of the orient Joining its growing number of over 140 locations nationwide, Chopstix Noodle Bar opened on 25 June in St Stephen's Shopping Centre, Hull.

Open 11am-8pm Monday to Saturday, and 11am5pm on Sundays, the new store will bring over 10 new jobs to the city and seat 44 eager diners.

As well as take away classics like Sweet & Sour Chicken and Salt ‘N’ Pepper Chicken, Chopstix has a range of fresh flavours including the spicy Firecracker Chicken with a fiery garlic and chilli seasoning, and brand favourites like Chicken Katsu Curry and the restaurants signature Caramel Drizzle Chicken.

AI and apprenticeships on the agenda at quarterly forum

mployers and training providers from across the region underlined the importance of collaboration as they exchanged ideas and intelligence at the latest quarterly forum organised by the Hull and East Yorkshire Local Skills Improvement Plan (HEY LSIP).

The event came days after the latest version of the LSIP was signed off by Skills England, paving the way to shape skills, training and workforce development in Hull and East Yorkshire between 2026 and 2029.

Around 100 delegates attended the event which was hosted by the TEC Partnership at East Riding College in Beverley and brought together the private, public and voluntary sectors.

Chloe Tate, Group Director Business Engagement at TEC Partnership said key themes included apprenticeship reforms and incentives, preparing learners for AI in the workplace, building confidence and individuality in interviews, and strengthening communication with employers.

the Voluntary Community and Social Enterprise Sector with the Exploring Opportunities (EO) adult skills project.

Kirsty reported that since 2022 EO has supported 900 local people, with 72%

progressing into employment or more formalised training. However she added that EO ends in September 2026 and, with no plans for a follow-on project, she invited delegates to think about how they can help.

New standard raises customs intermediary expectations

MRC has published a new Customs Intermediaries Standard, setting out what good practice should look like for organisations preparing and submitting customs declarations on behalf of traders.

HMRC sponsored the development of the Standard in partnership with the British Standards Institution (BSI) and sector representatives, including ChamberCustoms.

The Standard aims to improve quality and consistency of services provided by the customs intermediary sector and to help traders make more informed choices when selecting an intermediary.

PAS 41201:2026 is voluntary and does not create new legal obligations. It does, however, give importers and exporters a useful benchmark when choosing a customs intermediary.

PAS 41201:2026 applies to customs intermediaries operating in the UK. This includes customs agents, freight forwarders, express operators, warehouse operators and hauliers where they submit customs declarations for others.

The Standard covers areas including due diligence, continuing professional development, systems, processes, data management and transparency.

For traders, one of the most important points is that a customs intermediary should not simply process information without proper checks. They should be able to explain its processes, check documentation, maintain accurate records and communicate clearly.

The new Standard gives traders a clearer way to assess whether their customs intermediary is operating with the right level of due diligence.

AaGlobal team go back to school A sixth form college in Hull added an international accent to its latest alumni day by welcoming a former student and her colleagues who are experts in translation and interpretation.

Pumi Ndlovu, a Recruitment Assistant at AaGlobal Language Services, joined the company’s Linguistic Engagement Officer Archie Mulligan in highlighting the opportunities available within their sector to students at St Mary’s Sixth Form College.

Debbie Murray, Interpreting Department Team Leader at AaGlobal, said students can also earn while they learn if they already have the skills which are in demand from the company’s clients working across the public and private sectors.

Debbie said: “Our clients include the NHS, local authorities, housing providers, education, police and the legal system. We also have a wide variety of clients in industry and we connect them all with our linguists.”

former Super League player who set up his own mortgages business is kicking on in a new business development role ahead of schedule after making his latest signing.

James Green, founder and Managing Director of Green & Green, acted quickly to recruit Matt Collinson, who has joined the firm as Mortgage and Protection Adviser and brings nearly 20 years of finance experience to the role.

James said: “We’ve been working to a gradual growth plan with me moving into a business development role and we decided to accelerate that when we heard Matt was available.

“There are some great advisers out there but they are not doing the levels of business that we would expect here. We know Matt can handle the caseload. He’s more experienced than I am, with a proven track record and his job is to come in and take my job off

lessandro Caruso Architects Ltd (ACA) is delighted to announce that its Langtree Care Home project has received a Highly Commended recognition in the Project of the Future Design UK Award category at the prestigious Design in Mental Health Awards 2026, held in Coventry.

ACA Directors Amelia Caruso and Alex Caruso attended the awards ceremony as part of the Design in Mental Health Network Conference, following the project’s national shortlisting.

The Highly Commended accolade was awarded in one of only a select number of categories to feature a special Highly Commended distinction, highlighting the project’s exceptional design quality, innovation and contribution to the future of care environments.

Designed by ACA on behalf of Millennium Care Group, the 52-bed specialist dementia and nursing care home forms part of the wider Standish Care Village development. Opened in 2025, the home has been carefully designed to

provide a welcoming, supportive and therapeutic environment for residents, staff and visitors, placing wellbeing at the centre of every design decision.

Alex Caruso, Director at ACA, said: “We had a fantastic day networking, learning and what a great way to end the day by celebrating the judges' recognition on the Langtree Care Home development. It is incredibly rewarding to see the project acknowledged amongst so many outstanding schemes that are helping shape the future of healthcare and care design.”

Yorkshire Trading Company to open Flemingate store Ever-popular regional retailer Yorkshire Trading Company is to open at Beverley’s Flemingate centre.

The long-established business has committed to a 10,300 sq ft store at Flemingate, joining the line-up of national and independent operators at the East Yorkshire retail and leisure destination.

Yorkshire Trading Company will occupy one of the largest units at Flemingate, with the store expected to open in the next few weeks.

The opening will create around 25 full-time and part-time roles, with Yorkshire Trading Company currently hiring for the new Beverley team.

The heating manufacturer has raised vital funds for Macmillan since 2018, supporting the charity with its work to help people living with cancer and their families.

Ideal and its employees, alongside colleagues from sister companies within Groupe Atlantic UK and Republic of Ireland, have supported Macmillan through sponsored challenges, bake sales and other initiatives.

On average, more than £40,000 has been raised for Macmillan every year during the partnership, helping hundreds of thousands of people living across the UK receive the support they need.

Every month, Ideal employees contribute £1 to wear casual clothes on a Friday. The “dress down Friday” initiative raises around £900 each month, donated to both Macmillan and other charities close to colleagues’ hearts.

Colleagues have also donated to Macmillan through Ideal’s staff boiler purchase scheme.

The £325,000 raised for Macmillan is enough to run the charity’s Online Community platform, supports more than 600,000 people affected by cancer in the UK, for over a year.

Hannah Wragg, Macmillan’s Relationship Fundraising Manager, visited Ideal’s headquarters site in Hull to celebrate the latest fundraising milestone.

Hannah said: "Thank you so much to Groupe Atlantic for their dedication and commitment to supporting Macmillan Cancer.

Life can’t be all about work! Chamber Motoring reviews some of the latest offerings on the market.

Good enough to convert a sceptic This gorgeous looking Audi S e-tron GT shares it’s platform with Porsche and is certainly a head-turner, but it’s more than that.

DAVID HOOPER says this is one of the nicest cars he’s driven this year.

A

s a proper petrol head, enthusiastic driver, biker and occasional racing driver, I am not the biggest fan of electric vehicles for all manner of reasons, although I do now accept they are here to stay.

This gorgeous Audi S e-tron GT though has gone a long way to changing my view, and I have to admit it is one of the nicest cars I’ve driven for a long time, regardless of its power source, but with a price tag of nearly £135,000 you would expect the bar to be high.

One of my main complaints about EVs is their range, which makes most of them unsuitable for me and what I need from a car. But with this e-tron GT having a 94.3 kW battery and a range of 323 miles on a full charged during my test, that range anxiety, while not entirely disappearing, is much reduced (although plugging in to my Pod Point charger easily tops it up overnight).

And then there’s the performance. With a 0-60mph time of 3.6 seconds and a limited top speed of 150mph, no gears and a consistent torque curve, this Audi e-tron – with its Quattro all-wheel-drive system – is built on

the same platform as the Porsche Taycan. It will pin you back in your seat and keep you there until you relax your right foot on the throttle.

The grip levels are second to none and the car feels poised and well balanced 95% of the time. It is truly a pleasure to drive.

‘Perhaps the best thing is just to relax and enjoy the journey’ There is no getting away from the weight of the batteries though, as I discovered during a spirited crosscountry drive. Braking firmly into corners on a dry road found the tyres squealing, even without ABS activation, as they struggled to slow the car down. There was also the odd off-camber corner which unsettled the car’s otherwise excellent air suspension, which will also make the e-tron lean into a corner and reduce pitching under braking (all very clever stuff!).

My other issue with EVs is actually becoming an increasing concern as the performance of some of these vehicles is at supercar level, with 6-700bhp equivalent from the electric motors being put into the hands of people with no training to drive such powerful vehicles. Some of these are as fast off the line as a modern day Formula 1 car to 60mph.

This e-tron GT, for example, will hit that benchmark in 3.6 seconds, which is blisteringly quick by any standards. Its mid-range punch is just as potent, which makes overtaking slow traffic a simple task – but these cars also carry their speed well and can catch out the unwary very easily.

Perhaps the best thing is just to relax and enjoy the journey, and the interior of the Audi e-tron GT will help you do just that. It is really lovely, with a mix of perforated sports leather seats with an illuminated S just below the headrest, door cards that feature alcantara, leather and carbon fibre inserts, which sweep seamlessly into the dashboard to create a cosseting environment for driver and passenger alike.

The sports steering wheel has a flat top and bottom: at first it looks a little odd, but you don’t actually notice it after a little while when you are driving – you are far too busy concentrating on what is going on around you!

Audi has sensibly kept buttons for the heating controls and electric seats so there’s no need to scroll through endless menus trying to find what you want, and

at the top of the centre console there are buttons for the parking assist, traction control, cameras and the drive select button. This allows you to choose Eco, Comfort, or Dynamic driving modes.

I applaud Audi for keeping the buttons!

The Audi e-tron GT is very low lung with its sporty styling and, as the years creep on, getting in and out of a low sports car becomes an increasing challenge. But fear not, this Audi will help. Among the many menus is a switch which allows the car to raise and lower its height on its air suspension to make getting in and out of the car easier for older owners.

It’s also quite a good party trick to show your friends!

Among the e-tron’s other tricks are a panoramic glass sunroof that you can tint or make clear at the touch of a button with clever glass reacting to the light. It also has a feature which simulates a screen being pulled back so you can have just some of the glass opaquely tinted with the rest of it clear, something I’ve not seen in a car before.

The Audi e-tron GT is a beautifully styled car which commands considerable road presence. It’s not often in the days of jelly mould car design that a test car will turn heads as you drive by, but this big red coupe certainly did that on numerous occasions.

It is the epitome of luxury and is one of the few cars I have driven this year which I was reluctant to hand back to the manufacturer!

Technology is at the forefront of this EV The IM6 SUV is a big car, and it comes with a big battery which provides plenty of EV range. DAVID HOOPER says is you have a sizeable commute, this EV could fit the bill.

his is one of the newest models from MG, the IM6 SUV, a vehicle the now Chineseowned brand describes as one of the most innovative cars to be offered by the company so far.

The IM designation refers to “Intelligence in Motion” as MG strives to make EV ownership accessible and different, with technology-led dynamic cabins.

The IM6 SUV range begins at £48,495 for the Long Range 100 kWh model, rising to £51,495 for the Performance version, and increasing to £53,495 for the exclusive Launch Edition.

The MG IM6 SUV is a big car, which seemed to divide opinion between those who came across it during my few days. My test drive costs around £45,000 and comes with a 100 kwh battery that provides a range of 388 miles when measured on the WLTP standards once fully charged with my Pod Point charger.

The IM6 is a big piece of kit and bears no resemblance (that I could discern, anyway) to the iconic MG brand whose name it takes. Those cars were light and agile sports

cars. The letters MG only appear on the boot lid and there was no other reference to the classic British brand, nor any sign of its octagonal trademark logo.

The interior of the car also divided opinion, but for very different reasons. There is nothing retro about the interior of this IM6 – it’s is very minimalist, with virtually no buttons or switches. The only buttons are those which operate the windows – even the door mirrors are controlled from the large central screen in the middle of the car (which is nearly as complicated to navigate your way around as the space shuttle’s control panel!).

Everything is controlled from this central screen which, with familiarity gained over several days, does become slightly more intuitive, but more than once I was tooted at for fiddling with the panel when the traffic had moved on, or the traffic lights had changed, because I was trying to adjust something or find a control – and that’s never happened to me before.

driving. Personally, I much prefer buttons of some description for the primary functions and controls.

So far, I have neglected to mention the two rotary buttons on the steering wheel: the left one works the volume and the right one scrolls through a display in front of the driver. However, there aren’t labels on either and I suspect they both do more – I’ve just no idea what.

Above the control panel on the centre console is another screen which is home to your Apple CarPlay or Android Auto apps, while below it is a wireless charging point for your phone.

The IM6 is a huge car with bags of interior space for front and rear passengers. There is also a generous boot out the back for luggage or shopping.

On the road the car drives quite nicely, although I was always aware of its size and weight. The sheer size of this car limits its handling abilities, and potential buyers should take the hint from its Intelligent Mobility moniker.

It will certainly get you from A to B very efficiently with little chance of crashing thanks to all the safety features. I thought the big full length glass panel roof was a delight, too, flooding the interior with light.

Further delving into the menus found an innovative feature I’ve not seen anywhere else so far, and it’s called “Nap Mode”. Selecting Nap Mode will see the dashboard give you a choice of Sea Rhyme, Misty Mountains, or Quiet Night. The driver’s seat will then recline and

massage your back gently while you chill out and take a nap during a long journey... or perhaps I should say when you stop for a break during a long journey! There is also a timer to make sure you don’t “nap” for too long – I didn’t actually try it myself, other than to see what it did on my drive, but for those drivers who spend a lot of time on the road, or perhaps while you are waiting for your car to recharge at a public charging point, it could be quite a nice feature.

All-in-all, the IM6 is comfortable and reasonably refined, and seems to be reasonably well put together.

However, the technology in this car would put off many older drivers who prefer the simpler things in life, like a door handle to open the door with rather than having to press a button. However, as the world moves on, I’m sure younger buyers will embrace the technology.

During my test of 375 miles, the car used 3.2 kW of electricity per mile. From my experience with EVs so far thia seems to be about average, however the high capacity long range battery in this vehicle was a real boon and meant it only needed charging once or twice a week, instead of every day as is the case with smaller batteries.

For someone like me who has sizeable commute, that would be enough to tip the scales in its favour if I was looking for a company car, which of course, for business drivers, makes sense from a BIK perspective.

Airline to extend Hull City partnership

ull City are pleased to announce that principal partner Corendon Airlines will continue as the club’s front-ofshirt sponsor after agreeing an extension to their partnership.

The agreement will run until the end of the 2028/29 campaign, a long-term commitment that includes continued naming rights to one of the club’s hospitality lounges, the Corendon Airlines Raich Carter Suite.

Since becoming Hull City’s official travel partner in 2022, Corendon has been a valued sponsor throughout Chairman Acun Ilıcalı’s tenure.

Holding prime position on all first-team kits, the airline has managed travel arrangements for numerous overseas training camps and flown over 1,000 loyal City supporters on exclusive holidays to Türkiye.
