‘John Ash could be the best English poet of his generation.’ PETER CAMPION
POETRY edited by James Womack
• A career-spanning overview of one of the key English poets of the twentieth century
• Builds on Ash’s Selected Poems (1996), which was a summary of the first two stages in his career: his life in Manchester and New York
• In 1996 Ash moved to Istanbul, where his work continued to develop over the next twenty years until his death, from his early hilarious symbolist poems to the delicate historical fantasias of his later years
• This New Selected Poems brings together selections from all of Ash’s published volumes, from Casino (1978) to In the Wake of the Day (2010), and includes substantial fugitive or out-of-print materials
• Reveals the extent and variety of his poetic interests, as well as the consistency of his voice

‘I was deeply moved by Every Wrong Direction; it is filled with courage, honesty and grace – and quite a bit of sheer page turning thrill.’
ALAIN DE BOTTON
• In this selection Dan Burt revises and adds to his previously published poetry. It is a book about character, and the contrapuntal power of beauty and thought
• Exposes roots, education, culture and heterosexual passion under the cosh of history and chance
• These poems display the greed, lies, corruption, arrogance and narcissism behind lawyers, businessmen, politicians and generals the author met throughout his time in the US, Europe, and the Middle East
• The poems counterpoint this dystopia with the redemptive power of the sea, art, learning, and women alive and dead whose presences course just below the skin of a now old man
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Dan Burt was born in 1942 in South Philadelphia. He graduated from LaSalle College a Philadelphia working class college, read English at St. John’s College, Cambridge, and received his law degree from Yale Law School in 1969. He was a lawyer, businessman, and Honorary Fellow of St. John’s when he began to publish poetry in 2008. Carcanet Press published four books of his poetry and prose (2008 – 2019). Notting Hill Press brought out his brief childhood memoir, You Think It Strange, in the UK (2014), as did Overlook Press in the US (2015). His work has appeared in The Financial Times, The Sunday Times, The New Statesman, Commonweal, TLS, Granta, PN Review, Clutag Press, other newspapers, periodicals, and anthologies, and been featured on the BBC. A POETRY BOOK SOCIETY SPRING RECOMMENDATION 2026
‘More Sky is a tour-de-force of image and figurative language.’
POETRY LONDON
• Before Violence is an outstanding second collection from Joe Carrick-Varty, whose first won an Eric Gregory Award, was longlisted for the Michael Murphy Memorial Prize, and was shortlisted for the T.S. Eliot Prize
• This new book is formally bold and unusual: comprised of three gripping and compelling long poems, it carries the reader along with it in away which is highly unusual, unflinchingly looking at inheritance, pain and memory
• The book reflects further on growing up with an abusive, alcoholic father, a key subject of More Sky, and now part of the poems’ reflections on their own patterns and how that past shapes future lives
• His friend and fellow editor of the influential journal bath magg, Gboyega Odubango, is the subject of the last of the book’s three long poems, the profoundly moving ‘Late from the Water’
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Joe Carrick-Varty is a British-Irish poet, writer and founding editor of bath magg. He is the author of two pamphlets of poetry: Somewhere Far (The Poetry Business, 2019) and 54 Questions for the Man Who Sold a Shotgun to My Father (OutSpoken Press, 2020). His work has appeared in the New Statesman, The Poetry Review and Poetry London. He won an Eric Gregory Award in 2022. More Sky, his debut collection, was shortlisted for the T.S. Eliot Prize 2023, longlisted for the Michael Murphy Memorial Poetry Prize 2025, and was a The Irish Times Book of the Year.

THEMA CODES DNL Essays, NHWR7 Second World War
• Paul Celan is widely regarded as one of the greatest post-war European poets; his Collected Prose (originally published in 1993) is reissued as a Carcanet Classic
• Celan’s painful struggle with the possibilities and limitations of German, his native language, has helped to define the response of poetry in the aftermath of the Holocaust – known for his pronouncement that, after Auschwitz, only language ‘remained secure against such loss’
• A spare and reluctant prose writer, Celan explores the condition of being a stranger in the world while speaking with a quiet authority that insists on the centrality of poetry in modern life
• Waldrop’s translation remains true to the poetic rhythms of Celan’s prose, and her introduction contextualises the pieces
ABOUT THE AUTHOR (DECEASED)
Paul Celan (1920–1970) was born Paul Antschel into a Jewish family in Bukovina, a German enclave in Romania which was destroyed by the Nazis. His parents were taken to a concentration camp in 1942, and did not return; Celan managed to escape deportation and to survive. After settling in Paris in 1948, he gained widespread recognition as a poet with the publication of his first collection of poems in German in 1952. His earliest poems were written in Romanian and have been translated by, among others, his friend Nina Cassian. In 1958 Celan was awarded the Bremen Literature Prize, and in 1960 the Georg Büchner Prize. He committed suicide in Paris in April 1970.

THE IRISH TIMES edited by
• A new selection of work by Austin Clarke, one of the most significant poets of twentieth century Ireland – as important as Patrick Kavanagh, Thomas Kinsella or Seamus Heaney
• Some of his short lyrics remain among the best-loved poems in Ireland
• His translations from the Irish, and his use of Irish-language metres and forms, remain influential to this day
• He suffered as a writer from censorship, and his critique of the Catholic state emerged in piercing, clear narrative and satirical poems
• He is a poet of ‘other voices’, whose poems travel in place and time, and reclaim lost voices for his readers
• Launch event TBC in Dublin

• This new selection of work (the first in over three decades) includes previously unpublished material and reveals the beguiling style and technical ingenuity of one of American poetry’s bestkept secrets
• Introduction full of previously unpublished biographical information, a mystery resolved
• With a brilliant command of poetry’s formal resources, his subject matter ranges from film noir and espionage, to life’s little ironies and larger tragedies
• Famed poet and essayist Zbigniew Herbert felt that to read Coulette was to be ‘in the presence of a major poet’, and one who had ‘seized upon thematic material of central importance to the modern world’
• Deeply admired by fellow poets such as Thom Gunn and Donald Justice
ABOUT THE AUTHOR (DECEASED)
Henri Coulette (1927-1988), who spent most of his life in Los Angeles, was regarded as a master craftsman and a quiet original by his teachers Robert Lowell and John Berryman, his peers Donald Justice, W.D. Snodgrass, Thom Gunn, and Philip Levine, and his students Wanda Coleman, Michael Harper, and Luis Omar Salinas. His first volume, The War of the Secret Agents and Other Poems (1966), won the Lamont Poetry Prize and received significant praise, but his second, The Family Goldschmitt (1971), was accidentally pulped by the distributor. • Duran’s second Carcanet collection offers a response to and development of the artist Gordon Matta-Clark’s aesthetic, inspired by seeing the interdependence of disruption and invention
• In the summer of 1975, Matta-Clark broke into Pier 52, an abandoned warehouse on the Hudson River. Using hand-held tools he exposed the river below and cut into the walls and roof to allow movement and light into the space (Project: Day’s Passing, and then Day’s End)
• The book revisits 1970s Manhattan and in a late sequence the closed spaces of Palestine now, paying attention to disruption and border-crossings
• Duran is interested in preserving, recycling and transforming, and the way removal can alter our perception of a whole structure, animating new vistas and aesthetics

• A sequel to Martina’s highly acclaimed The Coming Thing (2023), this narrative poem continues the story of Imelda ten years on within the walls of Pentonville Prison
• Imelda, now a young mother and a visiting radiographer to the prison hospital, struggles with questions of life and death, crime and punishment: How can one control a car with confidence? Are drunken drivers ordinary criminals? Are ordinary lives a series of escape attempts?
• A funny, subversive book that plays with the trope of the Victorian Gothic novel (each poem is bookended by quotes from Dracula and from Rules of Road or the prison security booklet)
• A timely book that provides comedy as it raises more serious questions about human society, and during the present international prison crisis when the UK prison system is on the verge of collapse

• Fried’s fifth book is full of delight, grief, and confrontation as it explores renewal amid great loss
• Fried’s elbows are always out, her gaze unaverted as she presents furious poems laced with riddles; prose poems set in laundromats and zoos; meditations on the ashes of a beloved; mother-daughter standoffs; poems containing boxing matches; and everywhere the female gaze
• Her vision is bifocal – always has her eye on the domestic and the public, on the personal and the political
• Wide-ranging in subject and tone, these poems are sophisticated, indecorous, unsentimental and sharp
• A collection for fans of Hannah Sullivan and any other poet who understands the humour and the pity in everyday things
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Daisy Fried is the author of five books of poetry: My Destination, The Year the City Emptied, Women’s Poetry: Poems and Advice, My Brother is Getting Arrested Again, and She Didn’t Mean to Do It. • Debut Imperium won the Michael Murphy Memorial Prize 2023, a Somerset Maugham Award, an Eric Gregory Award, and was longlisted for the Anglo-Hellenic League Runciman Award
• This second collection is an ambitious book-length poem on ecopoetics – a radical fantasy for trees, forests and wood, presenting a visionary rewiring between nature and language
• Inspired by the haunting of trees in medieval poems and dream-visions: if trees acted as portals into a dream-world in certain medieval poems, then what does it mean to be surrounded by the presence of trees, wood, and paper in our day-to-day lives?
• Tackles the legacy of colonial land extraction, the urgency of climate crises, invasive and migrating species, as well as queer desire and intimacy
• A formally experimental epic consisting of leaf-like fragments and long branched lines that stretch across the page
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Jay Gao is a poet from Edinburgh, Scotland, living in New York City. His debut poetry collection Imperium (Carcanet, 2022) was a winner of the 2023 Michael Murphy Memorial Prize. He is also the author of five poetry chapbooks and pamphlets. Currently, he reads for Poetry magazine and is a PhD candidate in English and Comparative Literature at Columbia University.

• New collection from New Zealand’s inaugural Poet Laureate and five-time winner of the New Zealand Book Award for Poetry
• Previous collection Wow received a PBS Recommendation and was a White Review Book of the Year
• A master of gentle humour, surprise and delight, Manhire’s work is easily accessible: elegant, literary and witty but never pretentious or difficult
• This new collection explores the collisions between wonder and reality, childhood vulnerability and ageing, hilarity and heartbreak
• Anchored by two long sequences that embrace awkwardness, mystery and absurdity: ‘The Tobacco Tin’, a kind of folk story, and ‘Tell You What’, a set of wryly curmudgeonly opinions that evoke the prejudices of a fast-vanishing world
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Bill Manhire’s most recent books include Wow (2020), Some Things to Place in a Coffin (2017), Tell Me My Name (with Hannah Griffin and Norman Meehan, 2017) and The Stories of Bill Manhire (2015). • This new collection from the award-winning Irish poet Leeanne Quinn presents a panEuropean meditation on human geography and landscape that moves from Ireland’s coastal landscapes to the River Danube in Vienna, Austria
• An intricately patterned quest narrative in which a nomadic speaker documents their journey through a series of landscapes that resist straightforward delineations
• A collection about reading and finding meaning through the act of reading. A book that sees poetry as question and as quest
• The first creative study to extensively engage with the life and work of one of Ireland’s leading Modernist artists, Nano Reid (the temporal and geographic layers of her paintings)
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Leeanne Quinn’s debut collection of poetry, Before You (Dedalus Press, 2012), was highly commended in the Forward Prize for Poetry 2013. Her second collection, Some Lives (Dedalus Press, 2020), was noted as a Book of the Year by The Irish Times and The Irish Independent. She co-edited Romance Options: Love Poems for Today (Dedalus Press, 2022) and is the editor of Beginnings Over and Over: Four New Poets from Ireland (Dedalus Press, 2025). • Debut Some Integrity received the Clarissa Luard Award and the Lambda Literary Award for Gay Poetry; it was shortlisted for the Forward Prize for Best First Collection and John Pollard Prize; it was longlisted for the Polari First Book Prize and Michael Murphy Memorial Prize
• This second collection deepens the ekphrastic concerns of their debut, directing their gaze towards naturally occurring objects and tackling ideas of embodiment, alterity, queerness and ecology
• Witnessing the things that make up the world and attempting to render them in language
• Divided into three parts of lyrical abundance – Animal, Mineral and Vegetable – the parts are linked by their attempts imaginatively to encounter the non-human, and offer new foils for this poet’s reflections on mortality and desire
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Padraig Regan is the author of two poetry pamphlets: Delicious (Lifeboat, 2016) and Who Seemed Alive & Altogether Real (Emma Press, 2017). In 2015, they were a recipient of an Eric Gregory Award, and in 2020 they were awarded the Ireland Chair of Poetry Bursary Prize. • Brings together the work of a generation of poets never published together (and never has there been a generation still writing and publishing in their 70s, 80s and 90s)
• Carcanet has been publishing some of these poets since the early 1970s, while others are either late starters or more recent arrivals on the list
• All contributors are still writing and publishing new work, and this book offers both a kind of reckoning and a jumping-off point for a consideration of what is an unprecedented generation
• This book includes selections from their back catalogue by some of the defining poets of the past half-century, as well as new work and reflective essays on late style, fresh starts and their changing sense of creativity and calling
• Contributors include Gillian Clarke, Lorna Goodison, Rowan Williams, Bill Manhire, Jenny Lewis, Marilyn Hacker, Mimi Khalvati, Thomas A Clark, Jeffrey Wainwright and many others
ABOUT THE EDITORS
McAuliffe and Schmidt are experienced editors who have seen, in their work at Carcanet and the journal PN Review, the increasing abundance of work by older poets in recent decades, and the unusual perspectives these experienced poets bring to poetry’s perennial subjects.
