The famed 11th century Chateau de Varennes castle is in the commune of Quincie en Beaujolais in southern Burgundy. Since 1809, members of the Charveriat family have owned the castle and cultivated the estate's vines. Like throughout the entire Beaujolais region, the Gamay grape is king. The vineyards cover the hillsides surrounding the castle and face due south, which provides optimal conditions for the ripening of the grapes. so that they express all of the characteristic red berry fruitiness of Gamay. The nose is both fine and intense with violet floral and raspberry and blackcurrant notes. The palate is refreshing, fleshy and full-bodied with ripe, fruity notes. The finish is long and refreshing with lasting fruit flavours.

Well well, I wonder what the 2023 Art Series Cabernet is going to be like if this is any indication. This is one third each of new, one year old and two year old oak. Black fruit, cherry, floral and bay leaf perfume, cocoa and baking spice. It's medium-bodied, plenty of flavour here, though it has a crispness to acidity and energy that's spot on, tobacco savouries, and the sweep of stony tannin is something of a highlight. The finish is fresh and long, tinged with black olive and dried herb, some juicy raspberry in the aftertaste. So excellent. Alcohol: 13.5%.

Deep magenta hue in quite the savoury style, we have notes of licorice, animal skins, dry herbs, blackcurrants, cloves and a hint of graphite. Beautifully structured, this is seamless and seductive. This was a very good vintage in Margaret River after the slightly more challenging '21. This has the refined elegance and prettiness that is the Moss Wood DNA. The colour is quite pale compared to some previous vintages, but don't be fooled into thinking this is some shrinking violet. Violets, yes, but plenty more in an engine room that is balanced and poised as the tannins and almost lyrically laid oak harness the exquisitely bright fruit. So well balanced. A wine of immense charm and appeal. I defy you to stop after the first sip. Price; $176. Rating: 98/100.

They rested on a plateau ranging from 700 to 900 meters above sea level. The gnarled old bush vines produce very small yields of flavour-packed grapes. Purchased by Fantini. This is a 80% Tempranillo and 20% Syrah blend. Deep ruby red. Clear and bright. Aromas of ripe red berries and wild berries. On the palate flow strong red fruits. A feisty Spaniard.

The Abellio Albarino from Bodegas Gallegas in Rias Baixas, Galicia, Spain, is a vibrant expression of the Albarino grape, known for its freshness and aromatic complexity. Visually clean, bright, pale yellow with green hues. The nose has aromas of white fruit and tropical fruit with floral nuances. On the palate it shows well integrated acidity, good concentration and balance. The freshness and fleshy texture of the stone fruit notes provides a great sense of harmony, yet with a beautifully crisp, zesty finish.

This tempranillo is from the "Vega Demara" House located in the La Mancha region in central Spain. First time imported into Australia. Intense cherry color. On the nose, aromas of red fruits and the forest predominate. All the flavors of ripe fruits are mixed with great harmony. It'll be no surprise that this tempranillo matches a heap of dishes (especially tapas and smoky meats), but we love it with a midweek takeaway pizza, best enjoyed on the couch. Excellent value. Purple/red, the nose gives us vanilla, cherries, chocolate, plums and herbs. Supporting aromas of leather, aniseed and cassis swirl around before a sour cherry note kicks in on the finish. Fermentation is in stainless steel. The colour is that of an orange sunset. The nose gives us florals, raspberries, strawberries, spices and rose petals while hints of cherries emerge on the palate. Transparent straw in colour, this is pristine, poised and taut. A classic Clare Valley Riesling. Lovely notes of florals and limes on the nose, with citrus, grapefruit and river stones. Has some serious persistence and an appealing touch of bitey acidity on the finish. It will easily handle twelve to fifteen years in the seller but is very attractive already. Drink by: 2025-2040. From an iconic winery producing elite aromatic white wines, this pinot gris comes from the very good 2024 Clare Valley vintage. Pinot Gris is enjoying a resurgence in popularity and this is a bargain. Exudes captivating aromas of citrus, spiced apple, and stone fruit, The palate is vibrant, smooth and textured, offering ripe nashi pear, green melon, lemon, and a touch of baking spice. This compelling pinot gris is completed by a gentle, cool mineral grip and fresh acidity. Excellent with Asian cuisine.

3. Hidden Label Hunter Valley Semillon 2025 (KHL 2188)

This comes from HVD young vine (40 years old) and Army Block on Mistletoe Lane (30-40 years old). Very aromatic and floral, slight cut fennel, lemongrass, lime, white peach. Tight and flinty, pure acidity, feels and tastes great, a little bit powdery in texture, and finishes long with plenty lime and Disprin flavour. There's a succulence and richness to this wine, though it keeps itself trim and classic all the same. A top release, and it's so delicious now, you don't really need to wait (though you could). It's astounding to think that The House of Henriot has been in the same family for over 200 years. Mostly drawing from Premier Cru and Grand Cru villages. The chardonnay-dominant champagne is precise and elegant. Brut Souverain appeals with its nose of white flower and citrus fruit notes, then with a elegant, harmonious palate. An ideal aperitif. Made up of a balanced proportion of Chardonnay, the majority from the Cote des Blancs, and Pinot Noir, mostly from the Montagne de Reims. Around 8% Pinot Meunier adds a delicate fruity note. 100% Chardonnay aged for 6 years, Majestic and delicate. The colour is pale gold, the bead of fine bubbles is wide and persistent. Floral and refined, it reveals aromas of rose and acacia flowers. After allowing the wine to breathe, citrus fruits (orange-mandarin), cinnamon, some notes of dried flowers, toasted co ee and a hint of toast suggest appealing maturity. The opening on the palate is fresh and creamy, well balanced with pleasant floral and honey aftertastes. The finish is gentle and elegant. An estate blend of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier made in the "methode champenoise" true to this Estate's French origins. Pale pink hues across a straw green colour with very fine and persistent bubbles. Green & red apple notes emerge through baked bread characters, indicative of a complex sparkling wine. The lively palate is driven by a fresh acidity, which lingers harmoniously with the confection and aged complexity. Extraordinary value.
Wine critic Huon Hooke says that this "{secret winery name} is consistently one of the best value red-wine producers in the country-to say nothing of its superb sparkling wines. The prices are a gift." So it is not surprise that their sparkling shiraz is excellent. Made using the traditional method true to this Estate's French origins. The dosage is impressively low, with a spiced dark plum fruit up front, a rich chocolate confection mid palate, and a lingering, spicy dry finish. This is such a beautiful example of this largely right bank variety working its magic in Coonawarra. It's immediately perfumed, with notes of red berry and violet, with a subtle red berry influence. The palate has a deep intensity, but there's also such a silky, satiny, textural component to the medium body. Everything is so beautifully balanced, with a seamless integration of oak, supporting those fine Coonawarra tannins and carrying the palate through to a super long finish. 2. Hidden Label Langhorne Creek Malbec 2023 (KHL 2007)

Malbec this good at this price, really, it doesn't get any better. Although if {hidden winery} doesn't do great malbec, then no one does. At first, it appears all upfront fruit - black and satsuma plums, blackcurrants - but then savoury notes come through all spiced to the max with pepper, sumac and licorice, some roasted red capsicum, too. There are plentiful tannins, ripe and stretchy across the fullerbodied palate, and it finishes convincingly. Distinctively and pleasingly varietal as much as an imprint of place and producer. This is surely already a contender for one of the best value wines of the year. From a superb vintage, this comes from a range of vineyards at Nuriootpa, Craneford and Greenock, with vines as old as 128 years. It spent two years maturing in a mix of French and American oak puncheons, mostly older ones. Dark purple, the nose is redolent with chocolate and mocha. Big and bold, ripe and rich, this is seamless and supple. Poised and taut in style, with bright acidity, fine balance and great length, it finishes with silky tannins. Love this and it is such great value for a wine which is so chock full of flavour. Ten to fifteen years without a hiccup. Price: $40. Rating: 94/100.

3. Hidden Label Clare Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 (KHL 4956)

A wonderful vintage for the region, which comes through with all these wines. This fine Cabernet is an opaque purple. It is dominated by black fruits, along with blueberries, coffee beans, dry herbs, tobacco leaves and more, particularly hints of undergrowth. There is a supple texture with the wine finishing with fine, if slightly firm, tannins, decent length and good focus. An attractive Clare Cab which will drink well for the next six to ten years. Planted in 1994, the vineyard is situated on the east facing slopes of Mount Carmel, about 25km north of the town of Heathcote. It is blessed with ancient Cambrian soils. The oldest and best blocks were used for this reserve shiraz. Dark, inky purple with a vibrant hue. The nose shows rich dark fruits with the full array of pepper, charcuterie, and a subtle lift of French Oak. The palate has a richness and softness with dark fruit and chocolate and some spice. A wine which {secret name} sees as getting a head start on climate change, bringing in top Mediterranean varieties, although here, the Grenache used is from very old vines. The Temp hails from Eden Valley. Those who have been disappointed that Sangiovese has not exploded over Aussie vineyards will find no such disenchantment with Tempranillo. It is proving itself a quality addition to the ranks of local varieties. The two grapes underwent co-fermentation with wild yeasts. Maturation was for seventeen months in 300-litre American oak barrels. 250 cases. A vibrant crimson, this is delightfully spicy with red fruits, specifically raspberries and cherries, dried herbs and a flick of milk chocolate. A seamless and utterly seductive palate with a touch of acidity contributing to the freshness. Very good length and fine balance too, which seems to be the hallmark of {secret name} wines. I tasted this alongside a far higher priced pinot noir (double the price in fact) and this wine won the day by a margin. This is a ripper of a Pinot Noir. It's cherried and sinewy and drifted with autumn leaf notes, and it has a touch of satin to its texture too. From the estate's 1946-planted bush vines. Half whole berries, half crushed, with gentle pump overs and extended maceration on some parcels up to seven months; matured in older French puncheons, foudre, ceramic eggs and amphorae. This is quite a di erent wine to the 2022. That's a tale of two seasons. Both cool, but the buttress of natural tannin in the 2022 is commanding and it is more compressed, needing time. This is prettily lifted, with cherry, cranberry, rosehip, dried orange peel, wild raspberry and red florals. It's a gloriously fine and elegant expression of this cuvee, but it has tannic drive, line and length, savouriness, flavour depth and detail. Excellent. Alcohol: 14%. Closure: screwcap. From original '46 vines next to the High Sands block. The '23 grenache wines are very pale in the glass, and they are all a degree lighter in alcohol due to the cool year (one I love). A vintage like this really illustrates the kinship with the avant-garde grenache of Gredos, and with Barbaresco, and refined Etna Rosso (Girolamo Russo in particular), rather than almost anything from the Rhone. Savoury, dried red fruits, cranberry, cherry and redcurrant, warm terracotta, bergamot, potpourri, sumac, ground cinnamon, star anise, so tightly coiled, but also tensile, finely expansive in its flavour delivery. The palate is succulent, juicy and Pinot-like in its profile while the finish is savoury and moreish (even gorgeous).

Cirillo Estate the Vincent Grenache 2025

Wine critic Dave Brookes (Halliday Wine Companion) recently mused "Is this the best value red wine in Australia? It'd have to be up there at the pointy end. Grenache from a handful of vineyards; 1901 and 1906 plantings with some declassified 1850 vine fruit for good measure. That's just bonkers when you think about it". In the glass, the wine is bright, ruby garnet in colour, with youthful purple hues hinting at its vibrant nature. The nose greets you with inviting aromas of fresh red fruit, pretty spice, and subtle white pepper. If you have yet to explore Grenache it is an unwooded red, similar in weight and body to a young Pinot Noir, Tempranillo or Sangiovese. Vibrant, perfumed grenache with classic raspberry, rose petals and fragrant notes with soft tannin. It should be enjoyed at least lightly chilled, which will allow its lifted aromatics and bright, breezy personality to shine. Perfect with some light pasta dishes. This is the first release of Rockburn Crimson Peak Pinot Noir 2024, a wine that delivers everything you'd expect from top-tier Central Otago Pinot, but at a price that is genuinely 'gob-smacking'. And the results speak for themselves. This very first release has already claimed an extraordinary 98/100 points and a Double Gold medal at the 2025 New Zealand International Wine Show-placing it among just six Pinot Noirs to achieve that top honour.
Halliday Wine Companion's Dave Brookes is clearly excited: "A cracking pinot noir. some serious value for money.. a real sense of drinking joy. It's delicious". This is everything you want from Central Otago Pinot: vibrant fruit, savoury complexity, and effortless drinkability.

The fruit for Paringa Estate's Peninsula pinot is sourced from vineyards around the peninsula. It is a highly expressive regional style with an emphasis on lively fruit. James Halliday remarked that "the quality of these wines are often equal to many other vineyards best". The nose is bursting with lively red cherry aromas and spice. Whilst there is lots of red fruit on the palate, there is an appealing savoury tannin framework which gives structure and length. Rob Geddes MW says that "this brings something extra to the table for the price". It is a serious pinot noir that is also compelling value.

Bream Creek Pinot Noir 2025

Bream Creek Vineyard is one of the pioneers of the modern Tasmanian wine industry. The vineyard planted in 1974 is one of the oldest commercial vineyards on the island and is famous for its cool climate Pinot Noir. The 2025 vintage, due to perfect conditions, resulted in the largest crop ever produced in Tasmania and absolutely stunning grapes! This young pinot noir already shows impressive intensity and complexity, marking it as one to watch. Its vibrant ruby hue leads into an expressive bouquet where red fruits leap from the glass, layered with subtle cedar, cocoa and a hint of black pepper. The palate is generous and richly fruited, brimming with raspberries, strawberries, red and dark cherries and a touch of plum. Fruit and oak intertwine beautifully, lingering with remarkable persistence and finesse.

Mid-ruby in the glass with inviting aromas of damson plum, wild strawberry, dark cherry and some lovely raspberry top notes. There's a nice juiciness to the aromatic profile with expressive fruit tones layered with medina spice and hints of wildflowers, gentle nutty oak, pomegranate, crushed rocks, vanilla bean and a base of dried game meats and undergrowth. Layered and spicy on the palate, which shows plenty of clarity and complex pinosity. The tannins are fine and gravelly and there's a long draw of flavour on the finish. Alcohol: 14%. The Abel pinot noir clone has long carried a sense of mystique. Back in the 1970s a Kiwi rugby player returning from France tried to be bring in cuttings illegally. The cuttings, found in his gumboot, was confiscated by a New Zealand customs officer, Malcolm Able, who coincidentally happened to be an Auckland winemaker. The confiscated goods were said to have been taken from the fabled vineyards of Domaine de la Romanee-Conti in Burgundy. Understanding the significance of the smuggled cuttings, Malcolm Able paid for it to be put through quarantine. When the material was released, he planted the vines in his vineyard in Kumeu. The story might have ended there were it not for the Ata Rangi vineyard and winery in Martinborough. Ata Rangi planted the Able clone in their vineyard, and many of their award winning wines were made solely with Able grapes. Colloquially the clone is also known as the 'gumboot' clone.

The Abel clone has long carried a sense of intrigue - a cutting quietly brought from Burgundy to New Zealand decades ago. Legend has it the cuttings were 'nicked' from one of the world's most famous wineries - Domaine de la Romanee-Conti in Burgundy. Hence, the name "The Smuggler" for Helen's Hill Abel single clone pinot noir. The Abel clone is known for its intensity, perfume and dark-fruited depth which is on display here. The nose brings dark cherry, wild strawberry, and soft spice. On the palate, it's elegant but purposeful - red and black berry fruit layered with subtle earthiness and well-integrated oak. The finish is harmonious and long. Ideal with duck, mushroom pasta, truffle dishes, or a relaxed charcuterie board.

A harmonious, shiraz sourced from Marananga, Greenock, Seppeltsfield, Gomersal, Moppa, Lyndoch and Ebenezer (rather than the battle hardened old vines that make up the core of Torbreck's other cuvees). Crimson with black cherry core. Aromas of red and dried red currant, cherry and plum. Inviting notes of Chinese five spice, charcuterie and white pepper. Massively concentrated, glass-staining purple colour; the aroma is raw and callow with primary fruit showing little sign of development, but including a worrying whiff of aldehyde. Notes of raw coconut and sherry flor. Raisiny fruitcake and a trace of licorice too. The wine is full-bodied and power-packed, with black olive/tapenade, chewy tannins that coat the entire interior of the mouth, then a very long finish that suggests this wine will be long lived. The power, concentration and structure of the wine are undoubted, and it's possible my reservation about the nose is an issue with this bottle, and even it might have come good with time. Time is definitely something this wine demands. No doubting the power, concentration and super-ripeness of the wine. Don't touch it for at least two years. Alcohol: 15.5%. Closure: cork. The Steading is very much the heart and soul of Torbreck. The Steading is a collection of 45 different sources of old vine Grenache, Mataro and Shiraz vines. These precious grapes are vinified separately and blended once their individual virtues have been assessed. Deep crimson to dark plum core. Aromas of red cherry, red plum and redcurrant. The palate continues with red fruits cascading across soft chalky tannins and dense mouthfeel with textural savoury notes and fine acid adding length to the balanced palate. The Steading's generous and supple flavours combine with its silken texture in a wine that defines what is possible only in the Barossa.

Deep, dark red-purple colour with terrestrial aromas summing dry earth, terracotta, forest underbrush on a hot day, and chocolate. Full bodied and fleshy with loads of supple ripe tannins and smooth, supple texture. There's a subtle vegetable note that reminds us we are in Eden Valley for at least part of the wine-traces of sage and raspberry that are typical of the higher country. The wine has elegance and harmony aplenty. Alcohol: 15.54%.
Deep, dense, glass staining purple-red colour. Black fruits on the nose, along with graphite, ironstone and seed spices. Peppery notes underlying in accord with sumptuous blackberry and dark-plum fruit, maybe a twist of licorice too, and with airing a whiff of apricotty viognier is evident. This has a lot going on, and the palate is powerful and long-lasting with real depth and panache. The tannins are abundant and deliciously supple. A big red with grace. Alcohol: 15%. Closure: cork. Gran Maestro is a brand of Cielo e Terra, a joint venture between the Cielo family, who have been making wine for over a century in Veneto and Puglia, and growers Cantina Sociale Colli Berici. A stunning white made from Chardonnay and Fiano grapes sourced from Puglia (located in the heel of Italy's boot). Bright aromatic notes of pineapple, mango and papaya, along with banana and peach. The drying of grapes provides extra concentration, giving weight and richness without becoming heavy. On the palate the wine is juicy, plush and smooth with lingering fruit and enough acidity to keep it fresh. Influential Italian wine critic Luca Maroni rates it a hefty 96 points. How, in this economy, can one release such a wine for this price? It's beyond generous and an absolute steal. A long length of flavour; a wine for steak (rib-eye in particular). Wynns likes to promote Black Label as "Australia's benchmark Cabernet Sauvignon," but it could also be called Australia's greatest comfort wine. Year in, year out, it arrives in the glass and the drinker's high expectations are always met - that's so comforting. Even in relatively challenging cool, wet years like 2023 there is no denying the Black Label stamp: a deep concentration of ripe black fruit and spices in sync with some pretty smart oak. The '23 vintage does bring a finer expression of Cabernet, less obvious mint and eucalypt than usual and more gentle florals and light herbals. Blackberry, cassis, black cherry, violet, briar, anise, dried leaf, crushed herbs - fresh and lively - work in harmony with French oak (30% new) to present a fully integrated youngster. From a vineyard in the Sellicks Road sub-region of McLaren Vale, spent 14 months in a combination of 60% French and 40% American oak hogsheads. Electric purple colour. Wonderfully ripe and inviting, the bouquet shows notes of blackberries, mulberries, game and warm spice aromas. A big and bold style with richness and depth. Sweet cherry, spiced blood plums and hints of Christmas pudding, coffee and dry spices. All perfectly balanced by succulent acidity, fine grained chewy tannins and a long savoury finish. This is very good and an excellent value Malbec.

The vines providing the fruit for this wine are from a vineyard on Lovedale Road, and sources for Hunter Sem don't come much more famous than that. The colour here is a very pale straw. Still very young, there is a scintillating freshness to this wine. The nose gives us a touch of grapefruit, with spices and florals. Imagine a sea breeze blowing through an orchard of lemon blossoms. There is a seductive texture here, with balance and bright acidity. It should continue to improve and excite over the next ten to twelve years. Lovely rich. full, concentrated ripe shiraz palate with fine tannins that provide persistence and length. Wine critic Huon Hooke (The Real Review) concurs saying "full-bodied and rich, strong and concentrated black-plum flavours eventually dominating. This dry Mount Barker riesling is from one of the region's elite wineries (and one of Western Australia's most favourite wine brands). All from Block 6 on the Langton Vineyard. Brilliant very pale straw colour with highlights of green around the edges and a watery hue. Lemon and lime juice scents mix with hints of mandarin, chalky talc and steely mineral notes. Concentrated yet tense and focused, lemon, lime and mandarin fruits are backed by zippy acidity. Racy feel with steely mineral elements lingering through the long, dry, chalk tinged finish. A delicious dry Riesling that would be great with grilled seafood or spicy Thai cuisine.

A wonderful vintage for the region, which comes through with all these wines. This fine Cabernet is an opaque purple. It is dominated by black fruits, along with blueberries, coffee beans, dry herbs, tobacco leaves and more, particularly hints of undergrowth. There is a supple texture with the wine finishing with fine, if slightly firm, tannins, decent length and good focus. An attractive Clare Cab which will drink well for the next six to ten years. Its early days but recognition for this wonderful variety from the Margaret River is growing (and a wine like this would be a fitting flag bearer).

Chris Hancock MW (Hon) is one of the most influential figures in the Australian wine industry. Chris is the only living Honorary Master of Wine (a rare honour). A former Penfolds Grange maker, dux of Roseworthy and mentor to the Oatley family for almost four decades amongst many other achievements. Sourced from old shiraz vines from Chris' vineyard in McLaren Vale. Medium bodied, with blackberry and ripe dark plum fruits, with a hint of dark chocolate. Sophisticated supple tannins supporting deep fruits and appealing savoury balance. Has enormous appeal now yet will age gracefully for 10 years. Chris describes himself as "very much a technologist but also very much a traditionalist" and subscribes to Bob Oatley's mantra that wine must above all be "a good drink".

Some graphite and pencil shaving, dark chocolate and espresso. Plums and lilac unfurl in the middle of your palate with some chewy, fine-grained tannins. How, in this economy, can one release such a wine for this price? It's beyond generous and an absolute steal. A long length of flavour; a wine for steak (rib-eye in particular). There's a faint hint of cool climate leafiness before the fine-grained tannin guides us to the long finish. Waxy lemon pith, a little creamed honey, a whi of calico drying on the breezes. It's sprightly, fragrant and fresh. A bargain to boot. Alcohol: 13%. Price: $22. Rating: 94/100.

Barossa Shiraz comes with a certain expectation of flavour and satisfaction delivery, and I don't aim to disappoint on either front with this wine. Just like trying to get thoroughbred horses to run slow or West Indians to bowl slow, you have to allow Barossa Shiraz to fully express itself. Plenty of plums, spices and dark fruits on the palate, a nice line of fine tannin and gentle acidity to finish. Let the fruit shine and go easy on the oak. There is good reason this collab of region and variety is Australia's first choice red wine.

Mandala Compass Chardonnay 2024

Two chardonnay clones, P58 and 76, were picked and processed separately before being matured for 11 months in French oak (40% new). An opulent wine with its bouquet of apricot skins, almonds, lemon oil and acacia honey. It doesn't back away either on the richly fruited, intense, but also well-structured and balanced palate. Finishes pithy and long. Different but equally good, I feel, to the '23. Alcohol: 13%.
Rockburn is one of Central Otago's top producers. This is the first release of Rockburn Crimson Peak Pinot Noir 2024, a wine that delivers everything you'd expect from top-tier Central Otago Pinot, but at a price that is genuinely 'gob-smacking'. And the results speak for themselves. This very first release has already claimed an extraordinary 98/100 points and a Double Gold medal at the 2025 New Zealand International Wine Show-placing it among just six Pinot Noirs to achieve that top honour. Halliday Wine Companion's Dave Brookes is clearly excited: "A cracking pinot noir. some serious value for money.. a real sense of drinking joy. It's delicious". This is everything you want from Central Otago Pinot: vibrant fruit, savoury complexity, and effortless drinkability.
As far as I know, Pierro is probably the only producer who adds Chardonnay to the classic SSB blend. And it works. This is a great release. It's juicy but stays tight and balanced. Lime, green apple, melon, bright acidity, a very subtle herbal/grassy flavour, fine chalky grip, a dollop of vanilla yoghourt, with a limey finish of excellent length. Very nice. Alcohol: 13.5%.

This is beautifully framed with stainless steel maturation to preserve every detail of crunchy fruit. This will continue to give over more of itself with every year in bottle.
