OUR SUSTAINABILITY STRATEGY | 2022

OUR SUSTAINABILITY STRATEGY | 2022
Our purpose is to redefine the way sustainable development is delivered. We self-deliver innovative customer solutions across targeted built environment and infrastructure sectors to support economic growth, social advancement and environmental protection.
Sustainability is a broad term, with the most widely recognised definition established in 1987 by the World Commission on Environment and Development (WCED) in the Bruntland Report. Defining sustainability as:
Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
Sustainability is organised into three underpinning pillars, namely:
The construction and infrastructure industry is very resource intensive with huge pressures exerted on the natural environmental at every stage of a project’s lifecycle.
Sustainability is mutually beneficial to both the natural environment and our business, aiding us to use resources efficiently to create long-term sustainable values, build resilience to environmental and social pressures as well as minimise risks throughout our supply chain.
Managing the environmental, social and economic pillars holistically is key to protecting our environment, supporting the local community and serving our clients and the economy.
The UK construction industry accounts for:
3.1m people employed in the sector
60% of all material usage in the UK
120m of total waste generated in the UK
370bn tonnes industry turnover, generating £138bn of economic value, accounting for 9% of UK's total GDP
45% of the UK's total carbon emissions

Sustainability runs through everything we do. From the people we support, the business we sustain, the communities we work in, the industry in which we thrive and the planet we live on.
The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is a global agreement to eradicate poverty and fight inequality and injustice.
It was agreed by world leaders at the UN in 2015, with a focus on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which the UK has committed to deliver domestically.
Our 2025 sustainability focus areas align to the UN Sustainable Development Goals:
We recognise the importance of all of the UN Sustainability Development Goals, and we take actions to positively impact all of the SDGs in line with our mission and values. However to maximise our impact we have chosen a select few which are most relevant to our business and most align to our overall strategy.

How will we achieve our pledges?
One of the most pressing sustainability issues of present time is Climate Change, we recognise that our operations form part of the problem and bold change is needed.
We take our pledge to reach Net Zero Carbon emissions seriously, but we also know that this is not the finish line.
Our pledge to reach Net Zero underpins all three pillars of sustainability and we recognise the need to move ‘beyond zero’ - building a resilient business focussed on embedding circular economy and ensuring that wellbeing of people and planet are at the heart of everything we do.
