Permeability in The Sunset Senior Studio Project, San Francisco CA, 2020
This project centers a unique residential site in the Outer Sunset district of San Francisco where four lots are occupied by a historic water cistern embedded in the ground. I analyze how permeability and porosity overlap in the natural and man-made architectural landscape of Ocean Beach. From below ground to above, how does water and light permeate space and how can this be used to find a creative solution for the site? I propose that the existing cistern remain on site and the water can be drained and returned to the water table below. Permeability is graphically represented by a cave and a well that sink below ground and mountain that rises above it. The form is comprised of various curvilinear forms inspired by topographical lines. Even though the Mountain is man-made it is built to feel natural. The mountain facilitates a return to nature by creating a habitat for native plants and animals; creating an oasis in the Outer Sunset. Its primary function is a public park to be enjoyed by the community and a home to the many ferns, juniper trees, and snowy plovers of the region. 29
