It’s been a busy month with interest in the Tow Show increasing. Nick Phipps held an open day in February, inviting all exhibitors along to tour the new Stoneleigh venue. It was a busy day for Nick and the team and hopefully those of you who attended found the day useful. Our very own Derek Firminger went along to see for himself what the venue can offer, you can read his report on page eight together with all the contacts needed for the show.

Situated just outside Coventry, Stoneleigh Park is the perfect venue for the future of the number one event in the recovery industry.

With plenty of indoor space plus options for exhibiting outside, we’re excited that the contract has now been signed, with Stoneleigh becoming the home to the Tow Show for 2025 and beyond. More information on next year’s show will be included in future issues, but we are planning tours of the new venue for existing and new exhibitors.

With the IVR AGM still fresh in minds, the IVR has already moved on to the next event in the IVR calendar.

At the end of the month, all IVR approved instructors that deliver IVR machinery modules will be attending a 3-5 day instructor workshop, which this year takes place in Derbyshire, with thanks to Richford Motors. These workshops take place outside of an instructor’s ITSSAR training, which calls instructors back every 5 years for a refresher course.

Trainer update workshops are key in keeping the IVR approved instructor network abreast with current legislation, up to date with any new practices, tweaks to modules or changes in protocols, it is also part of the process of checking that all instructors are giving consistent training messages across the board. The workshops enable the IVR to quality check the network of instructors that support

the NHSS17/17B National Training Scheme

Most importantly it is a perfect scenario for the instructors to get together and exchange ideas generally. At these events the training room holds a huge amount of vehicle rescue and recovery experience, or more to the point the outside training area is where instructors can practically show that experience and from that comes new ideas and alternative techniques for improving safety when working roadside.

Practically every light recovery module will be covered in some format, as will the key heavy recovery modules but of particular note there are some key modules that have been undergoing a thorough review. VR04 Ancillary Equipment has been overhauled. The VR17 Lorry Loader Cranes is undergoing a

new way of delivering the module, VR28 has had some new ideas to improve safety incorporated into the module recently and the VR06 Transporters sees some changes in protocol.

Yes, the instructor workshops take valuable time out of an instructor’s diary but are crucial for the quality and stability of the National Training Scheme.

AWARD SUCCESS FOR OLYMPIC MOTORING ASSISTANCE

Hendon based operator Olympic Motoring Assistance are celebrating winning Allianz Partners Agent of the Year for the London/South East Region 2024.

After starting at the company as a breakdown operator in 1986, owner Yiannakis Kayias took over the business in 2005 and has guided the company to its recent success.

The business currently runs 22 vehicles with 20 employees and operators over the North West London region offering car and light commercial work.

Yiannakis commented: “The award came as a surprise to us and our area

manager, but we couldn’t be more delighted with it. All the staff here work incredibly hard to give the best customer service we possibly can, and I want to thank them all for this achievement. We had a fantastic 2024 and we want to keep our standards high and make Olympic the best it can be.”

TOW SHOW – ON THE MOVE

The Tow Show is on the move, as they say, and Greg has asked me to write an edit to formally introduce Stoneleigh Park and what the show brings to the industry this year, no problem I said, but I think it’s probably time for a short backdrop to the show and a bit of history for the upcoming young blood within the industry today.

It was back in 1999, and just after AVRO EX when Roy Jones accurately described AVRO EX, this time the show moved from Hinkley and was held at the Chesford Grange Hotel, as a car park too far, said Roy!

Roy Jones, Frank McAllister and Richard Goddard decided to take an all industry show and make it something independent. The experience required

to pull this off came from the three of them, Chris who organised the IVR AGM’s and gala dinners so successfully, Richard who ran AVRO EX 1997, turning a loss-making event into proﬁt and a huge success and Frank, he just likes getting involved and to be fair always had some fantastic ideas.

Richard brought the industry together to sell the concept, gathering

sponsors on his way, then he targeted the truck builders and manufacturers and brought REMSA on board, for those who don’t know, REMSA stands for Recovery Equipment Manufacturers and Suppliers Association, at the time a very important trade association, ensuring quality and standards within the supply network, unfortunately it

was considered no longer required so dissolved in 2017. Richard weaved his magic as he does and now everyone was on board and the European Tow Show was born.

Richard formed a show committee and speciﬁcally a show events chair and committee, headed up by Roy Jones. Next was to secure a venue, no not

Telford, the very ﬁrst show was held at Donnington Park, not precise on the year, but most certainly early 2000’s. It wasn’t long before Richard very gracefully stepped aside and handed the reigns to Frank and Roy who created a new company to run it, this was now a full-time job, as Nick and Greg will tell you, Richard was

concentrating his time with Nikki King creating RISC another huge success, but that’s for another day.

Once more I cannot be precise about the dates but roughly 2002 to 2003 the Show moved to Telford, successfully expanding year on year, by now it was renamed as The Tow Show. Its success continued for a number of years and eventually caught the eye of the RHA, or should I say the success of the show

was sold to the RHA by Richard! Who?

The RHA were at the time changing the face of recovery through its RHA Recovery Group, they were eventually to become the new show owners.

Jump forward to 2010, the RHA totally underestimated quite the size of the animal they had purchased, they themselves required several full time staff to manage the show from year to year, as good as it

was, it became a distraction from the everyday RHA business.

Our late friend Dave Gregory was doing some work for the RHA, the detail is not relevant, but the success of the Professional Recovery Magazine was, and discussions regarding new ownership were underway, and in 2011, ownership passed to the Gregory family, and the RHA Tow Show became the Professional Recovery Tow Show.

I would love to say the Tow Show venue was moving because I suggested it first, but unfortunately not, the tough decision was made by the Kelsey Media team with the recovery industry’s best interest at heart. “ “

So many more years of success has passed, The Professional Recovery Tow Show has once more found new owners, however this time the show goes on with the same show team running it, Nick Phipps, Paul (Greg) and their team, but what is now changing once more is the venue, something I know has been on Greg and Nick’s agenda for some time, a couple of years in fact, conscious of providing value for money for all involved, knowing Telford was no longer delivering this.

It was at last year’s show that Greg said to keep this under wraps, but this was going to be the last time the Tow Show was going to be held at Telford, what did I think?

I must say I do have mixed views, let’s face it Telford is the ideal venue, a miniature version of the NEC or the London Excel Centre, it was giving

suppliers and guests everything, including value for money, everything in the one place, hotels on site and let’s face it the familiarisation we all like, creatures of habit you might say.

Greg and Nick’s Show team have learnt so much from the venue, you can see and feel how its grown and expanded, the 3-hall setup always works, you know exactly where each stand will be, unless it’s a new exhibitor of course.

Somehow, they managed to improve little bits each year, for example last year the two NWVA heavy recovery trucks in pristine condition, with their Boniface cranes raised holding the “Welcome to the Professional Recovery Tow Show” and once the sun had set illuminating the area with their hundreds of LED’s.

There are so many positives, but as I said I personally have mixed views,

and I know a few others do as well.

Any industry’s main annual event needs to be good and should never stagnate, it must reimagine itself year on year, something the Professional Recovery show team always did well, but to do this you must have the support of the venue, let’s say their full backing.

Greg probably won’t want me to say this, but Telford owners events team used to do this, however they had started to take our industry and the Tow Show team for granted, giving away our regular show dates to other industries, as a result last year they even restricted our access to the toilets, “what the hell” is that all about, the food is never good, but last year, it was atrocious, the caterers should be ashamed of themselves.

I never get involved in any of the financials, but what I do know is that

complacency had also drifted into the cost to exhibit, and as much as all the exhibitors want to return each year, it must be cost effective, rather than accepting the increase in costs and passing it onto the exhibitors a real tough decision was made, “its time to move” Nick, Greg and the owners Kelsey Media all supported a move to Stoneleigh Park.

I would love to say the Tow Show venue was moving because I suggested it ﬁrst, but unfortunately not, the tough decision was made by the Kelsey Media team with the recovery industry’s best interest at heart.

NAEC Stoneleigh Park, previously known as the National Agricultural Centre, in Warwickshire located southwest of the village of Stoneleigh, today consists of four large blank canvas halls, covering just over 14,000sqm, alongside over 250 acres of outdoor space and conference and meeting rooms, plenty of room for the show to expand.

Stoneleigh Park today is the home of the Motorhome and Campervan Show, The Stoneleigh Horse Show in July and again in August, and in July, The Road Transport Expo Truck Show a show that pretty much

replaces the CV show, and now the Professional Recovery Tow Show.

The Kelsey Show team have run several open days for the Tow Show Exhibitors and for some industry stakeholders to see the exhibition show space and to get a feel of the venue, where each exhibitor would prefer to have their show stand.

There is no doubt that this year’s show is going to be different, but I believe different in so many positive ways, with each exhibitor’s space a similar size and in a few cases slightly bigger, with more manoeuvrable space around each stand, with an open and

welcoming registration area and a catering area just to the side, oh by the way we have sampled some of the food, a sandwich and salad buffet, put it this way most of us went back for seconds, it has my vote and I have no doubt it will be just as good on the day.

The Boniface demonstration area will be at the front of the venue, a good workable space giving Nick Ovenden and his team space to make an interesting and thought provoking demonstration, it’s always difﬁcult to demonstrate techniques, new and old to an audience of professionals, but somehow they always manage to do so, I’d say book your space, but you won’t have to, the show team will provide plenty of viewing space.

When it comes to your accommodation, there’s plenty to choose from the onsite hotel Stoneleigh Park Lodge (57 rooms), and close by within 3 – 4 miles you have Woodland Grange Hotel

(114 rooms), Chesford Grange (205 rooms), Premier Inn Coventry South (90 rooms), Premier Inn Leamington Spa with (101 rooms) and if you don’t mind a short drive then you have accommodation partners, Ramada Coventry, Hotel Indigo Coventry, Holiday Inn Kenilworth.

If you’re a golfer, then why not stay at Forest of Arden Hotel & Country Club and add a day or two to your stay and challenge a work colleague to a little 19 holes, be aware it is a 12-mile drive from Stoneleigh Park, perhaps just stay local and drive there for the day.

The Gala Dinner will be held as always, at the end of the ﬁrst day, this year the 1st of October, venue, The Slate, Warwick University Campus, Coventry. The show events team will be laying on transport shuttle buses to and from the hotels, so don’t worry everybody is catered for. This year’s gala awards dinner will be one to remember, with the presentation of

the 3 annual awards, the IVR industry training/safety award, The Kingﬁsher outstanding woman in recovery award, and the prestigious LV Britannia – industry lifetime achievement award, this together with excellent entertainment and three course meal.

BONIFACE VLA JOINS THE PJ KERLEY FLEET

On the 1 March, Boniface were pleased to welcome back Tom Kerley with his sister Catherine from P. Kerley Motor Engineers, to collect another 15.290 MAN fitted with a fully loaded Boniface 6T VLA which will join their growing fleet. It’s been almost a year since PJ Kerley took delivery of their last Boniface VLA, which was also fitted onto a 15t MAN chassis. Since going into service, the VLA has worked relentlessly - proving its strength, durability and reliability time and time again just as Tom had initially requested.

With years of use and operation in the ﬁeld, the Boniface “Very Low Angle” has proven be robust and versatile - easily coping with everything from motorbike recovery to six-ton casualty vehicles. Side winching points have been positioned along the bed, and the Boniface Low Pull system has been

ﬁtted enabling a casualty to be winched onto the 2,000kg capacity 2nd car lift. Boniface offers two types of 2nd car lift, one having removable ‘L’ arms, the other featuring a full wheel grid with removable low proﬁle wheel spacer bars. Both types are adjustable for both width and tyre size, giving the operator the ability to move anything from the smallest car to the largest van. Manual control levers are housed in a control locker at the rear providing backup in the rare situation of lost or damaged remote control. The 8,000lb hydraulic sliding winch sits atop the VLA’s super rugged and highly durable aluminium deck, giving all the “pull” power you need to get the casualty where you need it.

Once again, both the chassis and the equipment on P J Kerley’s latest vehicle have been built to a very high speciﬁcation, keeping their

operatives safe, comfortable and capable of performing any job that is asked of them whilst working in and around the county of Norfolk. Their striking livery perfectly complements the chassis and equipment, ensuring there is no chance of missing this vehicle when it’s out doing what it’s designed to do!!

MARSDEN TAKE DELIVERY OF F1 LOW APPROACH

We were delighted to see another one of our builds cross the water into Northern Ireland last month. And it was such a compliment to know that Marsden Recovery Specialist had approached us after seeing one of our new conversions in operation in one of their own yards.

The speciﬁcation of this inaugural vehicle was for an F1 Low Approach Slidebed which included a sliding winch, full remote function, secondary light bar and wrecker’s kit.

The fully galvanized sub frame and tilt frame was ﬁtted to a New Daily 7.2T Crew cab with AIR Pro Suspension, Touch screen infotainment and LED headlights.

THE AA TURNS TO DELPHI ACADEMY FOR CUTTING-EDGE TRAINING

The UK’s leading roadside assistance provider, The AA, has partnered with Delphi Academy to enhance the skills of its patrol network through a comprehensive training programme.

The collaboration combines Delphi Academy’s industry-leading expertise in automotive training with The AA’s commitment to maintaining exceptional service standards. The bespoke training encompasses a range of in-person sessions at Delphi’s state-of-the-art training Academy in Warwick, alongside access to its e-learning platform.

NTDA ANNOUNCES CHANGES TO TYRE INDUSTRY AWARDS FORMAT FOR 2025

Since its founding in 1930, the NTDA and its members have led the way in best practice, innovation, and excellence across tyre wholesale, distribution, retail, and ﬁtting. Over the years, membership has grown to encompass a broader range of sectors, from tyre manufacturing and retreading to the supply of specialist OTR tyres and aftermarket equipment.

To celebrate the outstanding achievements of its members the NTDA holds its prestigious Annual Dinner sponsored by Maritime Cargo Services together with the Tyre Industry Awards ceremony sponsored by Sailun Tyres, which is annually attended by well over 600 guests. This provides NTDA members a chance to showcase their business to customers, employees, competitors, and suppliers, proving that their company and its people are among the best in the tyre industry. The Tyre Industry Awards offer a variety of categories tailored to member businesses of all sizes and specialisms within the NTDA. Winners are selected by an independent panel of judges, based on their demonstrated commitment to the highest industry standards, setting an example that others can strive to emulate.

Additionally, from 2025 the Tyre Retailer of the Year Award will feature an online voting element, giving members the opportunity to rally support from their loyal customers.

New categories

To better honour the diverse achievements within member companies and those individuals who drive the success, the Association is proud to introduce new categories for 2025. These include Mobile Tyre Technician of the Year, sponsored by Autogem Invicta Ltd; Tyre Centre Manager of the Year, sponsored by Rema Tip Top Automotive (UK) Ltd; and Specialist

Commenting on the new categories NTDA CEO Stefan Hay said: “We’re very pleased to add the new individual categories for Mobile Tyre Technician and Centre Manager of the Year, as these crucial roles have been overlooked for far too long. We’re also very excited by the introduction of the Specialist Tyre Supplier category, including those members, including many new members, covering OTR (e.g. Agricultural, ATV, Earthmover, Industrial, UTV and Plant tyres), as such specialist sub-sectors make signiﬁcant contributions to the UK economy. OTR tyres are critical to sectors such as construction, mining, agriculture, logistics, grounds maintenance and manufacturing. This award will recognise a tyre distributor that provides specialist tyres and the associated management, maintenance and repair services that ensure critical industries can function at maximum efﬁciency. We have also split the wholesaler award providing both a Truck Tyre Wholesaler of the Year

VEHICLE PRODUCTION DOWN IN JANUARY AS SECTOR FACES GLOBAL HEADWINDS

UK vehicle production declined by -17.7% in the first month of the year, with factories turning out 71,104 cars and 6,908 commercial vehicles (CVs) for a total of 78,012 units, according to the latest figures published today by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).1 The performance follows a bumper January last year, when car and CV output surged by 21.0% and 27.5% respectively, and reflects weakness in key markets, notably the EU, China and the UK itself, combined with planned model changeovers.

UK production of battery electric (BEV), plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and hybrid (HEV) vehicles increased 1.5% to 30,028 units, accounting for 42.2% of all cars made in January, the highest monthly performance since December 2022 (47.2%). The lion’s share of overall car production (80.4%) was for export, although volumes slipped -9.2% to 57,140 units. Production for the UK market, meanwhile, fell -30.4% to 13,964 units.

The EU, the largest global market

for British-built cars, took more than half (52.0%) of car exports, followed by the US (18.6%), China (6.2%), Turkey (3.5%) and Japan (3.4%). While shipments to the EU and China fell by -11.2% and -46.3%, those to the US, Turkey and Japan all rose, up 12.4%, 36.9% and 8.1% respectively. Export demand also continued to drive CV production, accounting for 61.7% of UK van, truck, taxi, bus and coach production. 4,259 units were shipped overseas, a year-onyear decline of -46.6% with 97.1% destined for the EU. Volumes for the UK market also fell, down by -31.1% to 2,649 units. The performance must be set in context, however, with a particularly strong January last year –which saw the best CV output since 2008 – compounding the decline. The news comes amid plant restructuring and slower than anticipated rollout of new models as manufacturers respond to softening demand in the UK and other key markets. Given the signiﬁcant investments at stake, the industry is urging government to ensure the needs of the UK automotive sector are at the core of its forthcoming

industrial and trade strategies. These strategies must be combined with measures to ensure a healthy domestic market, especially for EVs – a key investment consideration – and quick release of the £2 billion promised by government to boost the sector via the Automotive Transformation Fund. Doing so would help shore up the competitiveness of the UK’s largest exporter of manufactured goods, a sector with the potential to deliver £50 billion in UK growth over the coming decade.2
