SHERIFFMILL TURN TO J&J FOR LATEST VEHICLE

S

heriffmill Motor Co. Ltd may have expanded, progressed, and embraced modern technology over the last 35 years, but the company is still family run, their core values have not changed, and the team still strive to deliver excellent service levels. Based in Elgin, Scotland, Sheriffmill are agents for DAF Trucks, Bosch and Service Sure, providing an array of services including MOT’s and diagnostics. Operating on behalf of most of the major clubs, their large fleet of vehicles can recover literally anything from a motorcycle to an articulated. Philip Scott commissioned J&J Conversions Ltd to build their latest addition to the fleet. A 12T DAF, 260 LF was delivered direct to Andover this summer. The conversion requirement was for a vehicle that provides both comfort and ease of use for the operator, with robustness, and versatility in its capability - few frills are needed when the cab looks so good (Jamaica blue with a red chassis FYI). A 4 T steel Eurotech slidebed with second car lift was fitted. Heavy duty lashing rings, stainless steel tool lockers, a ‘D’

shackle and bespoke storage completed this conversion. It’s a long drive from Elgin to Andover, some 570 miles, but it seems that distance isn’t a problem at all when you have two companies who agree that in business as well as life, “It’s always good to go that extra mile”. Last year’s 40 year celebrations will be a hard act to follow but every effort will be made to ensure it’s another fantastic evening. Jack Ovenden Award

The Jack Ovenden award is a time to celebrate those that embrace the industry’s National Training Scheme and the standards it represents. It is the highest honour to be nominated for the award and an amazing achievement for the overall winner. The presentation takes pride of place at the IVR’s Gala Dinner.

The Bill Jackson Award

To be considered for the award, vehicle recovery operators (large or small) are required to submit documentation that showcases a completed recovery job, regardless of if heavy or light. All applications must show the recovery process from start to finish and should demonstrate the degree of difficulty and the challenges faced, along with how they executed the recovery.

STANDARDS - TIME TO ACT AND TO TAKEBACK OWNERSHIP! I by Derek Firminger

t seems there is a theme at the start of my last few edits, if you haven’t noticed its stepping back in time, time specific to the recovery industry, generally a reference to those pioneers I regularly refer to. No it’s not those red lights again, they have been parked while the standards documents are brought up to date ready for our PROSE executive to present them to the DfT. No, this time it’s a step back to July 1999 when the Recovery Industry Focus Group produced a landmark document for the recovery industry, namely the “Introduction to Minimum Industry Standards”. Already some readers are asking why is this relevant today? Some, the younger magazine readers will be saying, what’s the Focus Group? Firstly, the Focus Group formed in 1996, representation on this group was provided by the independent recovery industry, including IVR, AVRO, LARO, and RRRA, plus acknowledgments extended to include a few companies and organisations that either no longer exist, or their association with the recovery industry has dropped off. The International Federation of Recovery Specialists (IFRS) The Independent Garage Association (IGA) The Roadside Safety Group (RSG), Recovery Equipment Manufacturers and Suppliers Association (REMSA) Retail Motor Industry Federation (RMIF) Roger Dyson Group, to name but a few. It should be noted the list of acknowledgments did not include any of the breakdown clubs, referred to today as work providers, simply because it wouldn’t be right for those paymasters to be involved in setting the industry’s standards. The group was jointly chaired by Christopher Macgowan and David Ebsworth, and it was administered by Peter Martin, all trusted industry experts and names always associated with high industry standards. The second question I know will be asked, why is this relevant today? This “Introduction to Minimum Industry Standards” was the foundation document to what is today Publicly Available Specification best known as PAS 43, so contrary to any other belief PAS 43 is an industry specification fundamentally owned by the independent recovery industry. Schoolboy error in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s, at the time unforeseen as an issue. In 2002 when the very first PAS 43 came into circulation, the Focus Group didn’t get their copyright for the foundation document included into the PAS copyright section, so today the copyright is held solely by BSI, British Standard Institution 2018 and published by BSI Standard Limited 2018. Without doubt, pioneering work made the industry’s operating specification PAS 43 the badge indicating an operator with sound policies and procedures and a benchmark the clubs and other work providers could rely on. However, it has always had its shortfalls, with too many open statements, options allowing choice with regard some safety

requirements by allowing the use of the verbs “Should or May”, I know I’ve said this so many times, but it’s important, they are both expressed as follows. Its requirements are expressed in sentences in which the principal auxiliary verb is “shall”. Its recommendations, which are not mandatory, are expressed in sentences in which the principal auxiliary verb is “should” or “may”. This shortfall, intentionally? Or otherwise? Used by some for their own commercial advantage. Was recognised by Highways England, as they were known then, and simply having PAS 43 was not considered a strong enough benchmark, so in line with the National Highway Sector Scheme they introduced NHSS17/17B. A bespoke integrated management scheme with an ISO 9001:2015 framework that has been developed to interpret ISO 9001:2015 as it applies to a particular activity, namely Vehicle Recovery at Highway Construction Sites (NHSS 17) and Vehicle Recovery and Removal on Controlled Roads including storage (NHSS 17/B). The industry’s PAS 43 document has always been under the direct control of the SURVIVE Group, which is primarily controlled by the AA, RAC and Green Flag. Like it or not they are strong commercial influences. If I asked for a show or hands, who knows what SURVIVE is, who are its members and what it does for the industry, I would hazard a guess nine of ten would not have a clue! Not surprising for several reasons, a distinct lack of communication. I don’t think I’ve ever read anything within the trade press, from or about SURVIVE, and if you have then I probably wrote it!

The Executive Group has always been chaired by an independent person, influenced by the three household names. Strange it’s those three on the executive and none of the other clubs, that’s always been quite a contentious subject, moving on! The Executive last met in February 2020 just before the first COVID lockdown in the March. Since then silence, despite some independent executive members emailing, asking what was happening, when would there be a meeting. It was then rumoured that the Chair Rob Gifford was retiring, once more the independent members of the executive emailed again and again, now what was happening about a replacement chair. Those rumours became fact when in October 2022 without consultation with the other executive members those three household names carried out a round of interviews for the replacement chair. I’m advised that further email correspondence followed, requesting an update regarding what was happening, as a promises of and update was made but not forthcoming. Despite the constant, yet ignored requests, a decision was made without the involvement of the full executive group, and the appointment of a new chair was announced WSP. This announcement was made via an email invite to the relaunch meeting of SURVIVE. So, SURVIVE Executive is now being run by WSP. I thought I would provide a headline from their website about their expertise in roadside safety and their understanding of the roadside rescue and recovery industry, the closest I could see from their list of sectors they work in was under the heading “Transport and Infrastructure”. “Our partnerships are our pride. Together, we redefine what’s possible bridging the gap between the technical and the tangible, delivering actionable innovation”.

I’ll leave the link to their website at the end, you can look for yourselves, and make your own decisions. Moving on, these are the subgroups to SURVIVE and where the management and updating of PAS 43 and the Best Practice Guide are handled, or at least they were up until 2018 as that was the last revision. Working Group 1 (Protocols & Best Practice) (WG1) Working Group 2 (Standards) (WG2) Membership of Working Group 1 & 2 is an industry mix and suggest you visit the SURVIVE website if you are interested to find out its members. I’ve taken the following notes from the SURVIVE website as this is the key activities for WG2

the SURVIVE Website) PAS 43 - The main focus of the work of Working Group 2 is the updating every two years of PAS 43 (“Safe working of vehicle breakdown recovery and removal operations - Management system specification”). The current edition, PAS 43:2015, was published in June 2015 and incorporates the revisions that were identified as being required to the previous edition. Why have I included this? It demonstrates how out of touch SURVIVE is from the reality of the industry most important documents. Out of date PAS references (PAS 43:2015) we are on PAS 43:2018 and this is three years out of scope! And BSI have considered revoking PAS 43 because it’s so out of scope and without communication from the SURVIVE Executive. If it was revoked – this would decimate the safety and standards of this industry, a catastrophe in the making! The industry must thank both PROF and AVRO for their joint efforts to stop BSI taking any action, and yes, I did say PROF and AVRO in the same sentence, because they are working together on the most important industry matters, and for the good of the industry. The SURVIVE website references the main function of WG2 is to address the key industry issues, PAS 43 has gone through six revisions, from its first publication in 2002 to its last revision in in 2018, each revision has generally stayed within the BSI scope of a two-year cycle. However, today when the recovery industry faces the biggest generational changes in decades, those household names who were entrusted as custodians of the industry’s two main roadside safety documents, left the room, and subsequently left the Independent Industry sleepwalking without updated versions of both PAS 43, and The Recovery Industry Best Practice Guide.

Why have I included this? It demonstrates how out of touch SURVIVE is from the reality of the industry most important documents.

Role of Working Group 2 (Standards) This Working Group is responsible for overseeing the continued development of the national standard (PAS 43) to ensure that it reflects best practices as identified by Working Group 1 and published in the SURVIVE Best Practice Guidelines. Working Group 2 is also the BSI Steering Group for the development of PAS 43. By the way PAS 43 is not the National Standard (It’s a Specification – not a Standard), NHSS17/17B is the Industry’s National Standard. Key Issues being addressed by the Working Group 2 (again directly from

Role of Working Group 3 (Communications) This Working Group is responsible for ensuring that effective communication takes place between the SURVIVE Working Groups, with other interested stakeholders and with the public. A key role of the Working Group is to ensure that the activities and recommendations of the SURVIVE Group are promoted and targeted at the correct audiences. Working Group 3 Communications (WG3) Automobile Association RAC Motoring Services Green Flag / Direct Line Group Highways England National Police Chiefs’ Council It’s safe to say the responsibility regarding communication sat with the same three household names, as I’m quietly confident Highways England, sorry National Highways and the NPCC would have taken the responsibility seriously. The re-launch of SURVIVE, remember the email I referred to a few paragraphs ago, well the now famous, sorry, infamous meeting went ahead on the 20th October, the meeting was at the offices of WSP in the mailbox Birmingham. I’m quite sure the intensions behind the meeting were genuine, but unfortunately it was poorly executed, the fundamental issues in relation to the lack of communication and consultation and the way the AA, RAC and Green Flag, just assumed the unelected consultants WSP could just carry on as if nothing was wrong, and as if it was the wishes of the all the attendees and in particular the other executive members. When it was clear from the comments on the day that executive members were not happy, some were more outspoken than others and me for one expressed the views of many, especially where the decisions were made by some members without consultation, industry decision with an assumption the past inactivity putting both PAS 43 and the Best Practice Guide at risk was inexcusable. Then to add insult to the whole sham of a meeting the minutes that were distributed paid no reference to the

actual meeting, none of the grievances were reported, it was made to read as an overwhelming success when that couldn’t be further from the truth. Apart from me using most of the air in the room there were a couple of comments worthy of a quotation. AVRO’s representative Mick Puleston: “AVRO were disgusted with the contempt of not being consulted, despite repeated requests over many months and repeated emails, asking what was going on? And placing PAS 43 at risk.” And from Andy Butterfield of National Highways, who stated “A vacuum has been left by SURVIVE some of which

independent industry will follow and for the remaining Executive to just agree and move on. It is vitally important the fundamental control of both PAS 43 and the Best Practice Guide sit with the independent recovery industry and not those who masquerade as the figurehead organisation and voice for safety in the sector, when clearly, they are not. Those currently in control are simply commercial organisation intent on forcing their own agenda. So, what next. Who should manage and look after those vitally important roadside safety documents, PROSE Professional Recovery Operators Safety Executive. An executive group without a commercial agenda, a group where each executive member has safety and transparency as the cornerstone to each organisation. None of those executive members are experts in rescue and recovery, but experts in their own fields. The expertise will come from the independent recovery industry, with a member subgroup having the full knowledge of all aspects of rescue and recovery. Light, heavy, alternative fuelled vehicles, ADR, specialist winching, heavy haulage, those complicated areas where some exemptions apply. This group will comply fully with the BSI governance set out in the PAS 0:2002. The revised minutes to the SURVIVE Relaunch meeting have been circulated, I say revised as I was led to believe they were going to be rewritten and corrected. I’ve not studied them, but I cannot see a single amendment, yet another farse, although I could think of a few more choice words. WORK IS NO FUN ANYMORE!

ardly a day goes by when we don’t hear the Government cry that they are going to stop the boats, reduce inflation and, frequently, we will get everybody back to work. Whilst I won’t be involved myself in the first two, I certainly think that they are short of ideas and lack direction when it comes to handling the country’s workforce. It is just incredible how the people of this country have become so lethargic and how so many, I am told millions, aren’t present in the workforce when they should be, not to mention the barren landscape of future tradesman, it’s a disaster in the making which is never mentioned. I have quoted on many occasions that well-known saying, ‘give me a boy at seven and I will give you a man’; but even that is now being cast in doubt and it

seems impossible to motivate youngsters to understand that they will need to one day join the workforce and be a working part of society, in a meaningful way like becoming joiners, electricians and of course motor mechanics. I have often said that youngsters aren’t exposed enough to a wide range of options, but I now suspect that from an early age that are not receiving the right type of motivation. Perhaps too many iPads and mobile phones. If we then fast forward to the modernday workplace, it is debatable whether it is an environment that anyone can look forward to being in. It is difficult to see a worker being any different than being a servant of the ‘nanny state’. Back in the day, the workplace was at most times a place of great camaraderie and, most of all, enjoyment. Most people,

by and large, enjoyed almost every day of their working lives and certainly looked forward to the next one! Workers would often laugh and joke with each other. Most would enjoy nicknames. We all remember working with skinny, chubby, grumpy and even carrot-top. I remember having a colleague named Speedy who by the way was the slowest operative I have ever experienced. It was always said that giving a person a nickname was a sign of affection and if you didn’t like somebody they were addressed by their correct name. The telling of jokes at one another’s expense was commonplace. Now, in today’s world, most of these things would result in a written warning or in dismissal; add to that the rigors of health and safety and other political correctness and what a miserable environment the workplace has become. There is no doubt about it, the proof of the pudding is in the eating. This all adds up to a society nowadays where at least 75% of the workforce are miserable and can’t wait to get clocked off. Just look at the police; what used to be a great and exciting job is now in most cases is just a chore because of bureaucracy, even in the breakdown and recovery industry far too much time is spend covering your back as customer expectations become increasingly unreal.

FREDHENDERSON The knock-on effect of this is clear for everyone to see. People, especially in the public sector, are off sick or absent for a disproportionate amount of time and in general scratches and scrapes are replaced with stress and mental illness. People, especially the young, are not interested in building a career and would rather work in an Amazon warehouse, not even on a fantastic wage. If we take the recent prisoner escape from Wandsworth Jail as an example, it appears that out of about 280 prison staff, 83 were off sick that day, which is ridiculous. At a time when I was on a Police working group, the high ranking officer addressing the meeting said that he was pleased that sick leave was now down to 13%. Quite frankly I was shocked: and that was 25 years ago.

Compare this to the private sector where another associate of mine employed 400 people and, after talking with him, he informed me that apart from the flu epidemic, he would only have four or five off sick at any one time, one percent.

Although sickness and general absenteeism is well on the increase, it is the public sector that seems to be the biggest culprit. Where, incidentally, people are taking early retirement or redundancy packages left, right and centre. There is one defining factor which explains the reason for this, no show, in no uncertain manner and that is for them the ‘golden nugget’ of full pay when off on sick. In our industry, like most of the private sector if you don’t turn up for work you don’t get your wages, and that how it should be. I would guess that correcting the problem is almost imposable, but the starting point is surely recognising it is a major problem. Fred Henderson

NEW BONIFACE VLA FOR BURKE BROS

T

he Boniface VLA product has been part of the Burke Bros fleet for a number of years and has proven itself time and time again to be both robust, reliable and extremely versatile. This latest vehicle is the first of several units due to be completed over the next few months - all of which form part of Burke Bros ongoing fleet replacement program. The VLA has been and continues to be a popular choice amongst operators throughout the UK. It’s simple operation via a single push button or lever control makes it quick and easy to use. In addition, the VLA provides a high payload, quiet operation and smooth deployment - all of which promote a positive professional image to the customer. It easily handles everyday recoveries such as large vans and cars but is equally capable of moving high value - low clearance prestige vehicles. The VLA’s deck is durable, light weight, incredibly strong and provides a very low approach angle. This latest MAN 12.250 fitted with

a Boniface 5t capacity aluminum VLA slidebed and 2t capacity 2nd car lift, has been built to the Burke Bros usual high specification and includes many optional extras specified by the customer. These include side winching points on the bed, a low winching facility allowing casualties to be winched onto the 2nd car lift, polished stainless steel locker boxes, wrecker kit, full radio remote control for the bed and winch, several sets of strobe lights including ones on the tilt frame which become the highest point when the bed is deployed and many other accessories. The VLA’s rugged aluminum deck provides resistance from rust and corrosion keeping the vehicle looking great for much longer than a steel bed. It also provides both increased payload and fuel economy. A standard feature of the VLA is the manually operated sliding 8,000lb hydraulic winch allowing the operator to easily maintain a straight pull on the casualty’s towing eye. The 2t capacity 2nd car lift is adjustable for both width

and tyre size which means the operator can move anything from the smallest car to the largest van. As with most Boniface slide beds, the subframe and tipping frames are galvanized to help prolong equipment life and the body is fitted with a range of LED lighting helping to ensure years of reliable service. As well as the radio remote control, the VLA also comes with manual lever controls which are housed in a control locker at the rear providing a valuable backup in case the remote is lost or damaged. TIME TO GO SOLAR? The green route to savings and sustainability good for your company, good for the environment too By Mike Morgan, Midhurst Engineering

A

little over a year ago, a few months after the Russian invasion of the Ukraine I was extremely concerned with the massive spike in the costs of electricity at work when we were advised that our new bill would be subject to an increase of around 450-500%, suddenly a reasonably inconsequential cost was now a major issue. Everyday the prices went up to new record levels, deals that were there one minute were withdrawn the next, nobody was sure where the peak was going to be, and it soon became clear that the war in Ukraine was not going to reach any kind of swift resolution. As business director you are permanently trying to look ahead into the distance for dangers, opportunities, savings in efficiency and costs, this one I have to say I did not see coming or at least not the extent with which it did. What was disappointing was that had we done nothing at all we may well have been better off (Well you live and you learn and hindsight is a wonderful thing). I did what I thought was right at the time and am now stuck with an uncompetitive price for a total of three years. Now we can’t all be right all of the

time but I do detest getting things wrong especially this badly and I have to take full responsibility for that one. With little in the way of options moving forwards, I did what I always do when I have a negative situation, look at it from all angles to see if there is any way to turn it around and make it a positive. I decided to tackle this thorny issue another way, starting with asking the landlord if he would have any objections to the company installing solar panels on the very large workshop roof, explaining the bind we were in and fortunately he was all for it. The next thing was to get some quotes and a much greater understanding of the product and regulations regarding the installation. Three companies came to site and I carefully picked the brains of each one, eventually settling on a local company who I warmed to immediately (Solar Voltaics). They thoroughly walked through the costs, benefits and next steps to take. The original proposal was to pay for the best panels that we could afford to cover as much of our usage as possible, unfortunately when the calculations were done this was too powerful to feed into the local electricity board system and could cause damage to their infrastructure, so we had to settle

for some slightly lower powered panels, frustrating but it did reduce costs by about a third, so there was one bit of good news. I understand that this is still a significant capital expense but in my opinion it is a bit of short term pain for long term gain and pays for itself faster than more expensive assets in our line of work. It is also possible to get finance on this just like any other capital expenditure. If you are VAT registered as most are this element will be back to you by the end of the quarter, and around four years (depending on the size of the roof and power of the panels) to get back the rest, after that everything is actual clear profit. Solar panels are subject to certain legislation on what you can and can’t do but these were relatively straight forward. They also do NOT require planning permission but on commercial premises come under the permitted developments rules. I applied for two government grants at this point too. The hardest part was next, dealing with the local council planning department and SDNP (South Downs National Park) as I had to all this myself (understandably the solar install team can only help you so far) so with no previous experience I gave it a go and the initial submission went in on 13th May and

OPERATORNEWS then again on the 13th June & finally on the 13th July. It’s a good job I do not suffer from triskaidekaphobia! It was incredibly frustrating at times especially as we had 17 documents already uploaded on the portal including Lukes detailed plans and drawings. But the plans got rejected on the first occasion for a relatively minor difference in on boundary mapping scale, then a request for more drawing showing the workshop windows and doors or fenestration as they like to call it, (still no idea why) and finally more technical drawings/computer aided design drawings that I had no way of doing. In desperation I spoke to Luke at the solar company (who had been kept informed throughout, I was now beginning to realise why they don’t get involved with this side of it) and it was resolved by him ringing the council dept, personalising the whole thing a bit and getting the bottom of what and how the drawings should be and then sending them to me to upload onto the portal for a case of third time lucky. We had finally been granted the go ahead, my excitement was somewhat tempered when Luke advised me that the lead time for the installation was over twelve months. Annoyingly making the overall wait from idea to fruition over two years, again incredibly frustrating from both a financial and environmental aspect. The next stage was to have an inspection of the roof carried out for structural purposes (each panel on our install is weighted with a 25kg slab and with 81 panels the weight spread over the roof was in excess of two tonnes). They are free standing and can be removed if necessary. Then we had a massive stroke of luck in that Solar Voltaics had a big job postponed and could they get ours done in a week or so and it would take 7-10 days. I nearly bit their arm off, offered to help using our crane or forklift, arranged parking for the scaffold lorry and we have been using the solar

power for just over a week. At this point I thought it was a good idea to share this in our industry as there must be scores of good empty roof space not taking advantage of this and it may help people do something beneficial for the environment and save themselves a whole lot of money moving forwards. In life I am always trying to engineer win, win solutions and come up with sustainable options. Our total return on investment should be realised in four years or less and that is prior to selling anything back to the grid. To be able to achieve this we need to get a certificate from the installer and then register ourselves as a producer before securing a deal with one of the big six electricity suppliers, whoever wants to pay the most per khw (apparently 6p is the average with the top rate when last checked 14p per kwh, and many paying the derisory sum of 1p per kwh). To give some other facts and figures, for the first ten days of October (not the ideal month to start) we have generated almost 1000 kwh of electricity, worth on their calculator £335, but worth more than double that to us with what we are having to pay per kwh. The website also tells me that is that is a saving of 955kg of CO2 emissions and also advises me that equates to 0.53 of a plated tree, or over a year the equivalent to planting almost forty trees, what’s not to like. When we have much more yield data then a further decision can be made whether to keep sending the excess to the grid or invest further with a battery to store the excess and use it ourselves.

I don’t view myself as any kind of eco warrior but feel that we should all care about the environment for the generations to come. Our children and grandchildren are going to inherit a planet that we need to take responsibility for here and now and you know what it feels good to have helped with our little bit. We all strive to be good workplaces, but also responsible, ethical and caring in our businesses, it is what we want but it is also what our customers want too. If you have read all of this so far you will remember that I applied for two grants, the Government are always shouting from the rooftops about these things and how they help us all out, well the first one never replied despite multiple e-mails. The second confirmed receipt of the application and then went exactly the same way as the first one, ignored again. Deciding not to take this lying down I complained bitterly, not that we had been refused but that we did not even get the common courtesy of any kind of response. The answer from the government was as follows: ‘We do not know why there was no response to the first scheme (good to know, thanks for that) and that the second grant was now closed.’ When I pointed out that it was not closed when I applied again there were no answers. So if you are wondering why the country is in such a mess this microcosm speaks volumes for me. Do it for your own good, the good of the planet and reach for aspirational goals, just don’t expect any help from the government. PROFESSIONAL RECOVERY MAGAZINE

INVITATION TO THE INDUSTRY

I

n the last issue I reported on the PROF EV summit held in London last month. Facilitated by Accenture, their report and actions have come back into PROF, and the NPCC. Unsurprisingly, there are some very obvious actions and recommendations that seriously impact what we do, what we charge, and in time the insurance premiums we will be charged. In the spirit of working together as a united industry I contacted AVRO to propose hosting a meeting together to inform the industry of the findings of the report and try to create a united industry response! The report has major implications for various contracts that include electric vehicles. Storage charges in particular will have a major impact on police contracts and statutory charges of electric vehicles. There is an obvious concern on how these charges will be met and underwritten! The Home Office are now well aware of cost implications regarding storing electric vehicles, and various incidents like the Luton airport fire and the one in Essex have drawn massive attention to the risks involved. We need to apprise VRO’s of the situation, and in turn you must make your own individual commercial and safety decisions. This will be the first time we have come together as an industry to work with each other, with you, and with the government departments that set out the legislation we have to adhere to. The meeting will be held at our old home, the Hinckley Island Hotel, Leicestershire. Tuesday 5th December 10.30am. As always lunch and refreshments will be provided. Together with the AVRO executive we will set the agenda and that will follow. This meeting has been called for your benefit to inform and advise you. I have invited the police and other government departments and so far, the response is positive. Some work providers have also shown interest and will be invited.

The meetings with AVRO have been constructive and proactive and we are both looking forward to presenting a professional united recovery industry to our stakeholders and our work providers. Unlike PROFCon, this meeting is not by invitation only. VRO’s and established work providers are welcome, but it has to be on a first come first served basis. to not only suffocate the profile of the recovery industry, but it’s also allowed them a commercial advantage over our independent work providers. In the last two years they have effectively undercut all of our main work providers, taking major customers from each of them, and effectively from us. To be honest, it doesn’t really matter to me, PROSE has already established an industry profile, with government stakeholders and our emergency services, and it’s up to PROSE to fill those shoes and take the opportunity to establish real standards, best working practices, real

industry training, not 10 minute virtual quickies. Working together with AVRO, LARO, IVR, UKRO and hopefully our stakeholders and work providers we will take back our profile, our identity, and our standards including PAS43 recklessly abandoned by Survive. There should always be a place for any organisation that wants to promote safety and even make profits from safety, they’ve made money out of everything else we do. Safety is not a privilege, and we should all work together to maintain our safety, but standards belong with us, FULL STOP!

KNIPEX SPRING HOSE CLAMP PLIERS The timesaving tool for the workshop

T

he Spring Hose Clamp Pliers from KNIPEX is a tool that can quickly open, move or remove many sizes of hose clamp in tight and confined areas around the engine. Conventional pliers can generally only be used for a specific type of clamp, meaning a change of tools every time a new type of clamp is encountered. However, the KNIPEX Spring Hose Pliers can grip standard, space saving and spring wire hose clamps as well as spring band clamps between the diameter range of 0-70mm, all with a high transmission of manual force. A key feature which makes the Pliers so versatile is the maximum jaw opening of 80mm, which allows a clamping range

The KNIPEX Spring Hose Clamp Pliers have a slim head and rotating jaw inserts so that clamps can be handled safely and flexibly from any position and in confined spaces. As a result, the position of the pliers to the ring can be changed when the ring is clamped. The 85 51 250 AF version of the KNIPEX Spring Hose Pliers come equipped with a clever locking device which secures the pliers in place when the clamp is under tension. The clamp can then be moved quickly and conveniently over hoses (even when they are twisted) and “parked” in a suitable place. A mechanic’s hands then become free to work simply and safely on the tensioned clamp. Whether the work is on the air intake, cooling system, charged air or the water return flow or on the thermostat, fuel pipes or heating, the KNIPEX Spring Hose Clamp Pliers are the ideal tool wherever clamps or rings are used to connect hoses.

NEW APP DIGITALISES RAC WARRANTY EXPERIENCE FOR DEALERS AND MOTORISTS

A

new app aims to provide a market-leading digital experience for the 1,200 members of the RAC Dealer Network who sell car, van and motorcycle warranties carrying the motoring organisation’s brand and the 500,000 motorists who hold a current policy. Developed by the RAC’s partner in the aftersales sector, Vehicle Care by Assurant allows dealers to notify their customers about key product information and keep in touch with new offers, as well as creating the opportunity to renew at the end of an existing term. For customers, the app allows claims to be made and status updates to be accessed 24/7, provides help with booking repairs either with the supplying dealer or elsewhere within Assurant’s new national repairer network, and stores essential vehicle documents including MOT certificates to create a convenient single point of reference. Vehicle Care by Assurant is Apple iOS and Android compatible and the same services are also available through a new Vehicle Care by Assurant online portal – www.yourvehiclecare.co.uk – for anyone who prefers to access them through an internet browser. Lee Coomber, RAC client director at Assurant, said: “On one hand, the app

is about making it easier for customers to interact with us and use our services, providing them with access in the palm of their hand. Whatever they need from their warranty can easily be found, delivering what we believe to be a market leading digital experience. “On the other, it is an important tool for dealers in terms of continuing a relationship with their customers, whether that is fulfilling a claim in the workshop, providing information about new products and services, or offering extended cover when an existing policy comes to an end.” The app is an important part of Assurant’s business strategy for the RAC Dealer Network over the next few years, he added, which is heavily based on the use of digitalisation to deliver enhanced services to all parties within the warranty process. “Vehicle Care by Assurant is a key element of our automotive strategy, which is to be recognised as the ‘go to’ digital-first, customer-focused partner for motor warranty and aftersales insurance products in the UK. Whether we’re working with anyone from motor manufacturers and their networks through to car supermarkets and high quality, single-site independent dealers, we want to provide the very best in digital tools. “We believe that what sets the app

apart is the way in which we have elevated benefits for motorists and given them highly effective means to manage their vehicle care, while optimising and streamlining the ongoing product process for our dealer partners. It makes life much easier for everyone involved in the warranty process.” The app also marks the introduction of Assurant’s new repairer network for the RAC Dealer Network and its customers. In the first instance, the app will always refer a customer making a claim back to the dealer who supplied the warranty but if a different option is needed – for example, if the customer lives some distance from the original retailer – it helps them find more convenient alternatives. Lee said: “It makes absolute sense that the supplying dealer is the first port of call. That dealer knows the car and the customer and is best placed to undertake any claims repair work that is required. However, the new network provides national coverage for warranty holders who need other options. “Just by tapping on the app, they will be able to search, choose and book with more than 1,000 approved repairers across the country who have been chosen for their ability to provide high quality repairs at locations convenient for warranty holders.” PROFESSIONAL RECOVERY MAGAZINE
