News & reviews Pure gold Since its inception in 1972, the National Street Rod Association (NSRA) has evolved over the last 50 years more than anyone could have envisaged back in those early days. The club was spawned when the dozen or so members at the time decided it was time the Roadster Register, a sub-division of a drag racing club, be disbanded and a stand-alone street rod club formed instead. Half a century on, membership stands at around 2,500. Many things are planned to mark the NSRA’s golden anniversary throughout this year, including specific vehicle displays at a couple of events. The Fun Run at Rutland Showground on 17-19 June will play host to dedicated displays of previous Participants’ Choice winners (coordinated by Mick Harle) and Cars of Significance Part 1 (coordinated by Dave Biggadyke). Even more specific will be the Pop Festival embracing Pops, Fordsons and Prefects (coordinated by Keith Elliott and Popstalgia) and a celebration of all

NEXT XT MONTH things Jago, JagoRama, (coordinated by Jason Springate and Andy Hadfield). The Hot Rod Supernationals at Old Warden Park on 10-14 August will also host displays of previous Participants’ Choice winners (coordinated by Dave Brown and Lee Picton) and Cars of Significance Part 2 (coordinated by Dave Biggadyke). The more focussed displays will be the T-Party for all Model Ts (coordinated by Maurice Takoor) and 32nd Street, marking 90 years of the ’32 Ford (coordinated by Chris Smith). All the coordinators are currently busy pulling these displays together but, if you own an appropriate vehicle

and haven’t yet been conta acted d, please email nsra50th@nsra.org.uk Association members are also organising local drive outs, which will take place throughout the month of May. NSRA 50th Anniversary Spring Rumbles will be held the length and breadth of the country, and you can find out about the nearest one to you by logging on to www.nsra.org.uk/nsra-50th/

True champion Last month we mistakenly stated that Freddie Taylor was the 2021 Lucas Oil Junior Dragster champion, whereas the crown and the championship went to Harry Redshaw. Second place went to Thomas Cook-Abbott, with Freddie placed third in the points table. Sorry for the confusion Harry, but we’ve now set the record straight.

May ’22 issue on sale 25 March

CC contributor, James Webber, has made us aware of the e new-to-the-calendar Drive Custom Car Show that will be held at Newquay Sports Centre (TR7 2SL) on Sunday 12 June. The show caters for American cars, hot rods, VWs, classics and retro vehicles, with support from the Demon Drome Wall of Death, a swapmeet and trade stands. Facebook and Instagram: Drive_NQY

Boosting funds

In the July ’21 issue we mentioned the generosity of long-term reader, Paul Bibby. Amongst other things, Paul donated a set of Custom Car magazines from the very first issue in March ’70 through to the December ’20 issue. These were split into lots, Kelsey Media kindly threw in a few complimentary subscriptions, and it was all put up for auction to raise funds for Melbourne Raceway. The total raised so far is in excess of £300. Thanks to all who have supported this and, of course, Paul who instigated the auctions.

Ed and shoulders W

ith the NSRA Swap Meet being just a week away when this issue goes on sale, and Wheels Day some six weeks after that, the 2022 season is about to burst upon us with a flourish. That got me thinking as to which event I am most looking forward to this coming year. Having given it some thought, the simple answer is I can’t decide. This season promises to be something very special, with so much going on behind the scenes, and even if only half of what’s planned comes to fruition it will still be a year to remember. Mention is given in these News pages of this being the NSRA’s 50th anniversary year, and the celebrations around that will make the club’s events all the more appetising. 2022 also signifies 90 years of the 1932 Ford, and that milestone will be acknowledged at two events we know of already this year, but quite possibly more. The gatherings are not in competition, but instead will complement each other to mark this particular anniversary in a fitting way. The calendar this year includes a few new events too, which is always encouraging, along with the Hot Rod Hayride Reunion Show in July. That is billed as a one-off, but never say never, eh? Then there is drag racing. This year we’ll be bringing you coverage from Melbourne Raceway as well as Santa Pod, to ensure we embrace all the quarter-mile action across the country.

Love this…

Thanks to social media, welding has now become an art form and it was a delight to see some examples of it in pers on recently. What’s even more impressive in this very tidy bit of work by Joe Curtis @fresh_reflections is the blended weld between the crossmember and engine mount. Sure, it’s wholly unnecessary, but man does the technique ever look cool. We love this.

For those of you into nostalgia nitro drag racing (aren’t we all?) we hope to have some exciting news on that front next month. Just watch this space. Whatever transpires throughout the year, these pages will be rammed full of pre-event news and post-event coverage of everything hot rod and custom. We can’t wait… Dave Biggadyke

Super CC goes h S hard d We first brought you news of a hardback publication entitled Super CC The Collected Adventures Book One in the January issue, and we’re pleased to report the book is now a reality. What’s more, it’s a quality publication that does the comic strip hero proud and is a worthy tribute to his creator, the late John Richardson. Priced at £20 plus £5 for UK postage, the books are available via email and PayPal payment to fatboydale@ntlworld.com, or by cheque / postal order to Dale Jackson, 148 Beeston Road, Beeston LS11 8BD.

Uncovered Dear CC, I thought readers might like to see some former cover cars that are now living here in central Florida. Unfortunately, the green Pop had an accident last summer, but is being fixed back to original like in the magazine pictures. Greg Saunders, via Instagram

> Thanks for getting in touch Greg. It’s great that an ex-pat hot rodder (@britrodder in your case) still keeps in touch with his roots. Glad to hear that the damage to the Mark Simkiss-built ragtop Pop, Participants’ Choice winner at the 1999 Supernats, is repairable. Ed.

Impala hunter Dear CC, the ’64 Impala pictured in your February issue letters page was featured in Street Machine in 1979, and was built and owned by Milton Homer of Dream Cars fame. The picture you published was scanned from the feature. I can even tell you we shot it on either 18 or 19 June that year, reason being I got married on the Friday of that week. Clive Househam, via Messenger Dear CC, I felt compelled to reply after reading Georgia Lynch’s plea for the Chevy Impala as you mentioned my name in your response. It took me around three seconds of brain searching to remember that possibly the same exact pic was included in the Fruit Machine Heavy Metal Special huge poster magazine from ’79 / ’80. I’m sticking my neck out here ‘cause I haven’t 100% confirmed it, as I can’t be arsed to go up in the loft, but I think, as Georgia says, the same / similar pic was

also run in one of the magazines, though this time I cannot recall which. The poster mag (pic attached) is often listed on eBay. Mark Blows, CDSRC historian Dear CC, the Impala Georgia Lynch is looking for was featured in Street Machine, and the September ’79 issue of HOT ROD & Custom UK. Owned at the time by Milton Homer, it’s parked outside Peppermint Park in the picture in HR&C. Neil Smith, via Messenger

> Thanks guys, that clears that up and explains why I couldn’t find the Impala in old copies of CC. At least it made an appearance in our sister magazine, HOT ROD & Custom UK though. As the ad for the Heavy Metal Special also depicts the December ’79 issue of Street Machine, I’m presuming the on-sale date of 30 April refers to 1980. I’ve passed this info on to Georgia, and hopefully she’ll be able to track down a copy for her dad. Ed.

Hero worship Dear CC, I thought you might like to see my mini tribute to a ’70’s hot rodding hero. I loved the Super CC cartoon, and doing these brought back memories of spending my pocket money on the mag, and then reading it from cover to cover. They are 1/24 scale, adapted from 3D printed models. Rodney Vann, via email

> Great stuff Rodney, thanks for sending in the pics. This coincides with the publication of the Super CC comic strip book, meaning hero worship for the little man is at a peak right now. Ed.

I

t’s been far too long. We haven’t had a Granddaddy fix since 2020 so, despite the Los Angeles County requirements for proof of vaccination and to wear masks, people came from all over the world for the 72nd edition of the Grand National Roadster Show. They were not disappointed. It was back on form as a top-notch show with top-quality cars by the hundred. Spread over seven buildings, the show has space for more than 600 cars, and on Saturday they have a drive-in section that attracts hundreds more. This year, it being the model’s 90th anniversary, the drive-in main feature was ’32 Fords.

a top-notch show with topquality cars by the hundred The other special exhibit this year was housed in Building 9, and comprised a carefully curated 'Gathering of Hot VWs' past and present, which made a great addition to this year’s event. Sure, there were a few teething problems with regard to actually getting in, but that was no fault of the show organisers, rather the Fairplex facility itself. No matter, in we got and had a jolly good time. If you couldn’t make it this year, put it on your list for 2023 and get out of the English cold into the American sunshine. CC

 Winner of the 2022 America’s Most Beautiful Roadster 9ft-tall award was Jeff Breault with his rare [they only made 3,000 of ’em – MP] ’34 Chevy hi-boy roadster, Lucille. Car was designed by Eric Black and built by Tim Devlin Rod and Customs of Wichita, Kansas. Impeccable build quality, but not everyone’s choice for the AMBR, especially with an LS under the bonnet.

 Rare they might be, but I’m not a huge Vicky fan. However, Phil and Deb Becker’s is a real attention grabber. Built by Dave Lane’s Fast Lane Rod Shop, the all-original car on big-inch Dayton wires is flawless.  Seems like a few more folk are looking outside the ’32 32 Ford box these days, and that includes Roger Lee from Ironworks Speed and Custom in Bakersfield, CA. This aluminium ’35 Chevy is a work in progress for Greg Heinrich .

 Roy Brizio always brings a fleet of cars down from his South San Francisco shop, and this year included Scott Gillen’s stunning, blown Buick-powered ’33 and my favourite orange ’32 Tudor of Aaron Myers.

10 CUSTOM CAR APRIL 2022

 Those who know their custom car history should know all about Nick Matranga’s beautiful ’40 Mercury, built in 1949 / ’50 by Barris Kustoms. Well, this is it, now owned by Eddie Tovar of Hawaiian Gardens, California. Lucky guy.

 I’ve only ever een the Dick se Williams’ ’27 in W ed, so it was a re shock to see the original baby blue o colour worn when c itt won the AMBR n 1953. The car in was magnificently w rrestored by Roy Brizio for Ross and B Beth Meyers with B an H and H flattie. a

 The one many people wanted to win the AMBR, the ‘Cusey Roadster’ was built in 1961 and is now owned by ‘flat top’ Bob Owens of Wellington, Texas. Featured on the cover of HOT ROD magazine’s Speed Tuning & Trouble Shooting one shot, it has been meticulously restored by Jamie and Jim Johnson of Hot Rod Haven in Albuquerque.

 If you’re into Flatheads, then this display engine from Speedway Motor’s Museum of American Speed was a knockout. 1949 AB featured an ultrarare Italmeccanica front-mounted 4500cc blower. Italmeccanica later became S.Co.T.

This year’s display included the stunning Panella Trucking Il Padrone ’48 Anglia, still owned by Bob Panella who raced it at the height of the gasser wars in the mid-’60s.  Radical, yes, but nevertheless, Tom Pagano’s ’56 F-100 stopped you in your tracks.  The Suede Palace did not disappoint and there were many cars I’d have happily jumped in and driven home, including this tri-carb, flatpowered ’39 Ford pick-up. I’m not into the padded running boards, but it’s period correct.

 No, it’s not the original speedster built for Edsel Ford in 1934, but a handmade 337ci Lincoln-powered Italian copy, restored by Troy Ladd for Bruce Wanta and painted by Brit, Mick Jenkins.

 Just how much motor can you get under the bonnet of a ’32? Well, obviously a lot, as proven by Jerry Logan’s twinblown pickup, complete with suicide doors and big rig-style stacks. Too much?

 These Boyd-style cars of the late ’80s look a little dated today, but that’s to take nothing away from the aptly-named Copper Tone, owned by Wally and Judy Belt. It’s a modified Coast to Coast ’34 body with Kugel suspension.  This stunning 67 Nova is ’6 wned and ow uilt by Martin bu harles of MC Ch  Winner of this year’s Automotive. Okay, so the Trip Out is primarily a biker event. Let’s get that out of the way to start with. But to dismiss it as such would be to do the event, and yourself, a disservice The Trip Out has become a lifestyle. It’s about using your vehicle as a vehicle to meet up with like-minded souls. That can probably be said of many rod runs, but the Trip Out harks back to the glory days of the late ’60s and early ’70s. No negative waves, man. There’s no attitude, it’s just about the earned respect for keeping an old Harley or Triumph or classic Flathead V8 or beat-up old Yank on the road, and travelling the miles in it. It’s about ‘feeling it’. After missing last year due to Covid, this year we really tied it on. Lots of people saying afterwards this was the best ever Trip Out, despite the word beforehand being that this would be the last ever Trip Out. Shame, though never say never an’ all that.

It’s not about what you ride, or drive, so much as where it takes you It’s not about what you ride, or drive, so much as where it takes you. And in this case, it takes you to a huge amphitheatre of a field, with a massive main tent showcasing bands playing some seriously funky music and go-go dancers, encased by a show field of knowledgeable and varied trade stalls, great food choices, decent toilets and showers. Then, of course, there’s the legendary ‘Lounge’, the party tent off to one side. I won’t try and explain the atmosphere within, other than to take into account my own 50+ years of partying and say it all just gets a bit crazy… There’s also the main bike marquee too, where the really groovy stuff is put. The Trip Out is a top event, hosted by, and attended by, the most wonderful people. Okay, it’s not for everybody but, if it is your niche, or you’re simply prepared to be open minded and attitude free, it’s the best lifestyle party on the calendar. Maybe the photos will do the event more justice than I seem able to in words. If The Trip Out is on again this year, and you haven’t been before, you may just want to pay a visit and see what all the fuss is about. It is kinda worth it. CC

Revival course Words and pics: Chris Smith Captions: Mike Pye Hot rods and Gassers have been a feature of the Goodwood Revival for several years now, but never before on the scale of the 2021 event. More than 60 cars, including a contingent of 12 Rolling Bones-built hot rods shipped in from the US (at their owners’ expense, incidentally), were one of the main attractions and, as you can imagine, that took quite some organising. And so it was, in February 2021, I received a call from local hot rodder and Goodwood inside man, Greg Waters, asking if I could help find some British hot rods to augment the display. The brief was simple – traditional style, no shiny bits and keep it quiet as it may never happen. But by April, the ’Bones attendance was confirmed, and we had a goal of assembling 32 ’32 Fords, the aim being to amass the biggest collection of traditional-style Deuce hot rods ever seen in the UK, along with a bunch of other equally appropriate hot rods. A theme had been decided by then – celebrating 70 years of the NHRA – so the cars were to be displayed in a drag strip / pit-style setting.

we had a goal of assembling 32 ’32 Fords Come July, we were told the exciting news we would be opening proceedings each morning with a parade lap of the track. I had to get busy if I was to get my own ’32 ready in time. Unfortunately, at the last moment the Rolling Bones themselves, Ken Schmidt and Keith Cornell, could not make the trip, but the 12 cars did and were a centre of attention all weekend. Static show aside, the real fun was had on track. The Bones’ cars led us all out from Earls Raceway on a route marshalled by period-dress policeman on a recreation of a 1950’s British high street. We all lined up behind a pace car, expecting just a gentle parade lap, but were unexpectedly waved through for a further lap. Needless to say, by the last day we were all prepared to go for it – so much so, Jon Foster punched a rod through his block and left an oil down that was visible for the rest of the day! There’s no doubt Goodwood Revival is a very special event. The action on track is fierce, despite the eye-watering value of some of the race cars involved, while off track there are traders, exhibitions, traditional fairground rides and highquality eateries to suit all tastes. If you have never been, add it to your bucket list, but be prepared to dress up or you will stand out in the crowd! CC

Magnanimous Words and pics: DB Despite a seemingly healthy number of eager buyers, vendor pitches were definitely thinner on the ground at the NSRA Northern Swap Meet last year. Nobody we spoke to could work out why that should have been though. It was the usual time of year, the venue was still Magna in Rotherham, the meet was well advertised, Steel City Cruisers helped with the organisation and the weather was amazing for October. If anything, we expected the place to be rammed as there hadn’t been an NSRA Swap Meet of any sort for the last 19 months.

more cars and trucks on display than ever Regardless of quantity, the quality of much on offer was high, and we’ve heard of a few bargains that were bagged, so those that did make the effort weren’t disappointed. One thing the Northern Swap Meet always scores highly on is the number of rods and customs that turn up. In contrast to sales pitches, there were more cars and trucks on display than ever this time round, and it took quite some time to check them all out in the car park. That alone was worth the entry fee. We had a great day, bought a couple of bits and met up with people we hadn’t seen for a while. Thanks to all those behind the scenes who made it happen. CC

Very charitable Words: Nigel Lockley Captions: DB Both the 2021 Car Fest events, North at Bolesworth Estate in Cheshire and South at Laverstoke Park Farm near Basingstoke, enjoyed fabulous weather and huge crowds. This year I worked as part of a new motorsport management team, which requested a repeat of some of the best of

The Yorkshire Motorsport Festival eventually made its first staging in 2021, having been cancelled the previous year due to Covid. It was touch and go then too, the event only getting the Covid-compliant green light from Kirklees Council two days prior to opening. Set in the stunning countryside surrounding Holmfirth, one of the major attractions of the festival was the closed road Wolfstones Hillclimb but, alongside

one of the major non-track attractions that, there were a multitude of static displays. I was involved in putting on a show of hot rods, American cars and drag cars in the club stand area, with the NSRA area forming the frontage of the stand. With help from Bob Sheppard and John Proctor, we put on what proved to be one of the major non-track attractions of the Festival, with the guys from Melbourne Raceway pulling in the crowds by firing up the drag cars in attendance twice a day. In the hope of mixing it up a bit more for this year’s event, I’m currently working with the organisers and the MSVR track marshals to see if we can have some drag cars performing at the 2022 event. It would be a great showcase for Santa Pod and Melbourne Raceway to put our sport in front of the masses and a younger generation of petrolheads. CC

Third time lucky When Tony Waters started this car in the mid-1980s he had a very definite idea of how it was going to look. Some 35+ years and two owner / builders later, it’s on the road and looking jus’ fine ■ Words: Mike Pye Pics: Matt Richardson

T

here’s always a feeling of joy and sadness when we feature a car that was started a long time ago by someone else. The sadness arises from the fact the original builder never had the opportunity to see their vision through to a finished car. The joy, on the other hand, comes from the person who finally finished the car and has the pleasure of blasting it up the road with a grin on their face. In this case of this ’34, there are two elements of sadness and one of joy, as there are two previous owners who deserve

the handbrake mechanism to the unusual overriders on the front frame horns.

Corner calling

It was Tony, therefore, who put the call into Chris Boyle’s ’34 Corner, we believe some time in the mid-1980s, and ordered a chopped three-window coupe body and chassis package. Speaking with Stuart today, who marvels at the amount of paperwork, including pictures for inspiration, cuttings from old magazines, catalogues and receipts that came with

Antony was a very quiet, shy guy, and he’d done an awful lot of planning honourable mention, though Stuart Gilbert is the one with the broad smile on his face. The build was started by Tony Waters from Bath, an employee at the Morris Minor Centre, which set up shop on the outskirts of the city in 1975. That connection adds up when you read the full spec of the car as it includes a number of small Morris Minor parts, from the boot lid latches through

the car that “would probably stack up about a foot high,” Tony clearly put some serious thought into every area of its construction. The guy that took it on from Tony, Scott Marsden, concurs: “Antony was a very quiet, shy guy, and he’d done an awful lot of planning, right down to things like the latches and switches.

©° We don’tt know about you guys, but we think Scott made the right decision when he opted to concentrate on the interior rather than having the ’shell repainted. It was he who built the seat, with its custom head rests, made the door panels and constructed the fabulous stained pine floor with solid brass inlays. Chris Vining at Custom Coach Trimming then took over and stitched up the whisky brown semi-aged leather and brown and beige tweed inserts, including the seat belt covers to hide the Sparco logos.

In fairness, that was the only reason I considered taking it on. I’d built a few VWs [Scott’s being modest there, he’s built a couple of show quality custom VWs] but

chassis, rolling on Weld wheels with IFS, a rebuilt 3.5 Rover and LT77 transmission mounted and a Volvo 240 rear. The body was painted and mounted, but nothing forward

I literally filled the Transit van I towed it home with with all the boxes of parts that came with it never a hot rod before. He’d just collected so much, I felt there was enough there for me to finish it.” Ah, the old rose-tinted specs. All car nuts have got a pair. Here’ss the reality of what Scott bought that day in 2019: a complete ’34 Cornerr

With those big ol’ tyres and the car’s rake, the rear three quarter angle is just plain tough. The tail lights are a combination of ’32 Ford style stop and tail, with discreet Motogadget indicators, Morris Minor reflectors and very well hidden high intensity fog light and LED high level brake light in the rear window.

of that. There was no interior, no wiring, no plumbing, no glass and no lights fitted. “I thought, hey, I’ve got a car here,” he laughs, “but really it was a long way off a driveable car at that point. I literally filled the Transit van I towed it home with with all the boxes of parts that came with it.

“When I properly looked through it all, it was like a parts bin. Some of it was salvageable, but I still ended up having to buy a whole load more bits to finish it in a way I was happy with.”

Painted ’shell

You didn’t have to paint it, though, that was a bonus, right? “Yeah, except only the ’shell was painted, and it had been done about eight years previous. It could have done with being repainted really, but I didn’t have it in the budget to do that, so I just had to cut and polish it the best I could. The bits I did need to get painted were done by Steve and Nick at Double H Restorations in Kenilworth.” One look at the picture of the wiring confirms Scott is an equally fastidious fella,

Stuart has spent a lot of time finessing the work of the two previous builders, using his knowledge and experience to set the suspension and steering up and make sure the ’34 is a car he can get in and enjoy driving. It’s the culmin nation of many years of planning an nd fastidious work, split between three different people, who clearly all share a similar vision for the finished car.

° Scott made the change from King Bees to the repro E and J (Edmunds and Jones) Type 20s, when he found someone on the NSRA forum making glass fibre bodies. Internals are all modern and tiny Motogadget side repeater indicators work alongside Butler army lorry side lights.

and he followed up Tony’s good work with a lot of his own, plumbing, wiring and generally bringing the car up to the state you see it here. “I knew the interior could be a real draw so I spent a lot of time on that, making the door cards, the floor, the seat, stuff like that. I can’t do the actual trimming but I did everything I could and then sent the bits to Chris at Custom Coach Trimming. He made a great job of it and it came out exactly how I wanted it.”

He's right about the interior being a draw. The styling, the workmanship, it’s really something. It was Scott who added the repro E&J headlights, and tapped into a rich vein of gold with the wheels, coachline striping and engine detailing. It was all going so well, so what happened? “Well, along came Covid and I maybe panicked a bit early about all that. The company I worked for at the time went down the pan, and I thought I needed to

Stu uart has jusst bought his way into a cool hott rod, let me give you a brief version of his back storyy. The very first issue of Street Ma achine, Ma ay 1979, carried a feature on a tw wo-tone PA Cresta on Wolfies with a hopped-u up 283 Chevy V8 and Powerglide transplant. That was Stuart’s, and it also appeared in CC some six months prior. He taught himself a few more lessons with the 352 big block-powered Mk1 Cortina that followed, as he explains, with a grin: “The engine came in an absolutely

I knew the interior could be a real draw so I spent a lot of time on that get some money in the bank, so I put the car up for sale. I’d only set the suspension up in my garage and the engine on the drive, and had only driven it to the top of my road and back. I knew it was all alright, but it wasn’t finished.”

Back story

They say one man’s loss is another man’s gain and so, in April 2020, via a comprehensive for sale ad on the NSRA forum, Stuart Gilbert stepped into the picture. Now, lest you think

rotten 1959 Galaxy Skyliner and I couldn’t afford a full set of pistons back then, so just bored one cylinder oversize and put one new one and kept the rest the same! “I put a Ford 390 GT motor in it after that, which livened it up a lot. That car didn’t even handle in a straight line, let alone in a corner.” u …and 10 x 15-inch Rocket Injectors on the back, wrapped in a pair of Coker Tire’s 11.00-15 Firestone dirt trackers.

Wheels are 4.5 x 15-inch Rocket Launchers on the front with 165 Michelin XZX radials…

APRIL 2022 CUSTOM CAR 37

° Scott used the term parts bin in reference to the van load of stuff that came with the car. Here’s why: the ignition switch is from an early Morris 1000, the starter switch from an E-Type Jag’, the dash switches and handbrake lever from a 1950’s Morris Minor and the wiper motor and mechanism from a Morris Marina. The unlikely combination all looks right at home though, doesn’t it? Beneath the dash is a 12V USB outlet and, behind that neatly trimmed panel, a 3.5kW electric heater with floor vents and screen demisting through chromed MGB screen outlets.

After that, he raced a ’64 Chevy Malibu SS with a cammed-up 327 in D/Production and, when he added twin downdraft Carters on a tunnel ram, learned a short, expensive lesson in fuel economy: “The first time I drove the car to Santa Pod like

stories. Today, when he’s not underneath a customers’ Land Rover, you’ll mostly find him either working on his faithful replica of ‘Gentleman’ Tom Payne’s 289 Cobra or spanking his very spicy 4.6-litre Rover-powered MGB GT up Shelsley

tapped into a rich vein of gold with the wheels, striping and engine detailing th hat, I seriously wondered if I could afford to o drive it home again. I was getting four miles to the gallon out of it.” Having also raced Super Rods on the Spedeworth circuit, and a lifetime spent in th he motor trade, Stuart has his fair share of © Chris Boyle started producing his ’34 Corner bodies mid-1985, still trading as Wizard of Rods at the time. He also offered a full chassis package and, looking at the details of that double A-arm IFS, this certainly looks to be one of his kits. Quality was always high and the fa act the car drives so well now is testament to his design and engineerring skill.

Walsh Hillclimb, in search of the outright tin top record in an old car. And that’s just two of his current projects.

First love

“I don’t really see myself as a hot rodder, I’m a petrolhead, into all sorts of cars and bikes, though hot rods and customs have always been my first love.” So, given all that history, and Stuart’s obvious abilities on the spanners, how did d you come to buy this pretty much finished car? Gold coach lining was a temporary job, done in fine line tape to see if it worked with the overall feel of the car. Scott liked it so it stayed, and it’s so well done that Stuart has no intention of changing it. We love its nod to the famous John Player Special livery and it really adds to the overall feel of the car.

© When you hear this car was started in the mid-’80s, it’ll come as no surprise to find the rear axle is the tried and tested Volvo 240 unit, complete with its factory disc brakes and a Pop’ Browns diff' cover. It’s currently apart so the halfshafts can be re-drilled to Chevy pattern to bring the wheels in closer to the body. Exhaust sounds great through what Stu thinks could be a pair of MGB V8 mufflers.

Having made a living for the last 30-odd years out of servicing and maintaining Land Rovers and Range Rovers, it’s fitting that the motor in Stuart’s ’34 should be a Rover V8. In this case, a mildly tuned, 3.5-litre, 10.5:1 compression unit from a Rover P6, with a 390 Holley on an Edelbrock manifold and MGB block hugger headers. Stuart reckons it’s putting around 200bhp through the LT77 five-speed ’box from a Rover SD-1, but he has a plan to fix that…

“It was my son, David’s, fault. He showed me the for sale ad – as he always does with interesting cars – and I just looked at it for a few minutes before saying, ‘I’ve gotta have that, haven’t I?’ “Thing was I’d seen a picture of a Model A coupe, fully fendered, chopped, with a big motor on it and a blower, and said one day

I’m going to build one of those. But I’ve got so many other projects on the go, it just never happened.” It nearly didn’t happen this time either, as his motor trade experience meant Stuart was reluctant to pay the full asking price initially, and Scott wasn’t budging, so he walked away. But totting up what had gone into the car in his head against the asking price when he got home, he realised it was too good a deal to miss. “I didn’t drive it when I went to look at it, but I could immediately see everything had been done to a very high standard. So much so, I haven’t had to do a huge amount, just go through it and set it all up really.”

Final fix

Naturally, Stuart has made some changes, namely the tyres and rear wheels, and lo owering the seat 3½ inches to better suit him – which turned into a bit of a mission ass it meant re-doing all the seat belt fixings, th he handbrake location and cables and

° The wiring gives a good indication of the level of detail Scott put into his part of this car’s build. The system features two fuse boxes, one for permanent live circuits and one for switched lives. He even produced full schematics of all the circuits in digital and printed form showing wire gauge, colour and layout before selling the car. Yep, he went to town alright.

re-siting the battery and a load of the car’s electrics that were very neatly located under there before – but most of his time has been put into the suspension and steering. “I’ve got the halfshafts away at the moment being re-drilled so I can get rid of the wheel spacers and bring the rear wheels in a bit, and there are a few other little things I’d like to change. The rear springs are too stiff and the travel isn’t quite right in

° Rear shocks are Avo double adjustable coilovers, thought they’re likely to be changed soon. Note the black plastic bolt covers, fitted so the car won’t end up with unsightly rusted fasteners when it starts clocking up the road miles, though Stuart is in the process of changing to stainless. ¿ Supplementing all the very British componentry are a Grant steering wheel on a tilt column out of a ’70’s Camaro (which connects to what may or may not be a Mk1/2 Escort steering rack via Rover UJs) and a set of Moon gauges by Classic Instruments. Moon gear knob sits on the LT77 shifter via a VW Type 2 swan neck adapter.

° The interior theme and attention to detail continues through to the boot, which features more Morris 1000 parts in the catch and locking mechanism.

relation to the body and cha assis, but they’re just small things you’d expect with a car that’s been built from the ground up. “The brakes weren’t there at all when I got it, so I’ve gone from a 5/8 to a ¾-inch master cylinder, but it could really do with a 7/8 one. “The gear detents in the gearbox need setting up a bit better, too. Those LT77 ’boxes are a bit fiddly like that.”

“This car drives lovely. It drives straight, it steers, it brakes and it accelerates squarely. My wife is happy to sit there alongside so, yeah, it’s a good car.”

Move over Rover

But what of the Rover motor I asked, knowing Stuart has considerable form in this department.

This car drives lovely. It drives straight, it steers, it brakes and it accelerates squarely “Other than that, though, I could not criticise in any way what I’ve bought. I just like a car to be engineered correctly, and work to the best of its abilities. That’s the most important thing to me.

40 CUSTOM CAR APRIL 2022

“It’s an early 3.5 out of a P6, so it’s not the best one, but I’ve built a lot of these motors over the years and I can tell this one has been done very well. It’s got some sort of cam in it and runs beautifully, with

quite a nice lot of low-down torque, which is what you want on the street. It could do with a bit more power though… “I would love it to have a small block Ford, as I’ve always liked Ford in a Ford, but I wouldn’t change it now. Too much well-done work would have to be undone. But… I have got the old 4.6 [Rover] from my MGB, and I’ve just picked up a quad downdraft Dell’Orto set up that’ll be ideal for it. That would add about another 100bhp from what it probably is now. “I do want it to go better, for sure, but it’s got to stay driveable. I’ve got a race car, I want this one to be a nice cruiser with a bit of go when I want it, and bags of torque. Like everything in life, it’s about maximising what you’ve got, isn’t it?” CC

Thanks:

Just my wife, Ann, really, for putting up with me working on cars and bikes all day and all night.

Norm Grabowski and Tommy Ivo… were my hot rodding heroes, my idols

Tick Tock Tiki

Johnny Belair rides the hot rod waves all the way to koolsville ■ Words and pics: John McCartney Model: Tara Murphy

T

he fabulously-named Johnny Belair has long had a love for the beach, and the lifestyle that surrounds it, which led to him spending much of his early years in the water surfing the waves. As he grew older and his interests spread to clothes and machines, it broadened to take in all the elements of the vintage lifestyle, and so it was only natural those should

be his inspirations with his hot rods, too. Further adding to the influences, in 2013 Belair hooked up with, and soon after became a member of, the Dead Man’s Curve LLC Car Club. It was then he decided he needed to build something new to initiate his membership into the club. His idea was to build a car to try and capture the spirit of a mid-’60’s show

rod, and he had all the encouragement he needed from his fellow club mates. Retirement gave him the time to get on with the build and, before long, the Tiki T started to get off the ground.

Head turners

In truth, the car is a throwback to when Johnny was 17-years old, and something happened in the hot rod

© Thanks to the huge array of reproduction parts available these days from the likes of Speedway Motors, Johnny has been able to realise his longheld dream of owning a ’60’s-style T-bucket hot rod without having to go through any of the grief of repairing and restoring 100-year-old metal. Steel may be real, but ’glass got Johnny to the show a whole lot quicker!

° Well known New Jersey striper, Mister J, brought Johnny’s ideas for the Tiki T to life, with artwork on the top and sides of the cowl, as well as the rear of the body tub, then finished it all off with miles of striping in contrasting cream and darker red colours.

world that not only turned his head, but also his ideas of how a hot rod should be built on their head. “That was when Norm Grabowski and Tommy Ivo came out with their Model Ts. They were my hot rodding heroes, my idols, and I always dreamed of building a Model T just like their T-buckets. It took a while, but all of their rides had a big influence on this build.”

was made famous by its use on the cover of the 1964 Ventures' album (The) Ventures in Space, all rolled into a car that’s very much of his own making. Getting the project going meant first finding a good donor car, or at least a decent body, which is easier said than done when you set your sights on a Model T. “I looked for an original car for a while,

and then decided as glass fibre tubs were popular in the ’60s, and that was the style I was going for, I may as well do what they did and use one of those instead.”

The need for Speedway

And so a brand new ’23 T-style body and Deluxe ’27 T-style chassis were bought from Speedway Motors. The reason for

channelling it three inches over the frame rails at the firewall, but then rising up to stock height at the back But this wasn’t to be just another clone of either of their cars, but a car that combined elements from a number of famous builds from Johnny’s youth, including Grabowski’s Kookie Kar, Ivo’s very similar T and the heavily raked Fred Steele / Don Spinney ’20 Model T roadster that

44 CUSTOM CAR APRIL 2022

° Being a Dead Man’s Curve Car Club car, there was only one company to turn to when it came to the rollers – Radir Wheels. Johnny’s choice are 15 x 6 and 15 x 10 Tri-Ribs with Uniroyal 5.60-15s and Radir / M/T 8.20-15 piecrust slicks.

© It wouldn’t be polite to guess Johnny’s age, other than to say he’s retired, so the United States Surfing Association sticker is a nod to his youth. The Association existed from 1961 to 1967 and was formed with the same basic intent as the NHRA, to bring together disparate groups and promote the image of surfing across America.

ordering the later frame was looking at old pictures of the cars mentioned above and feeling they looked a little bit, well, stumpy. A stock T has a 102-inch wheelbase, but Speedway offers a Deluxe ’27 T chassis with 116 inches between the wheel centres. It won’t get you any additional legroom in the body, but it will push the wheels significantly further apart, altering the proportions dramatically. Also included in the package deal from Speedway Motors was a four-inch drop tube axle with Ford spindles, chromed, sixleaf Super Glide front spring, plain steel hairpin radius rods, chromed tube shocks and F-100-style shock mounts.

Out back, a transverse buggy spring and more chromed tube shocks help even out the ride and stance, though the extra wheelbase means the car doesn’t have the radical rake of the Grabowski / Ivo / Steele cars that so inspired the build. Beneath the rear spring is a 1958 Corvette back axle with 4:11 gears and the Vette’s stock drum brakes, now with chromed backing plates, located by another pair of hairpin radius rods. In order to get the car to make all the needed turns, a classic reversed Corvair steering box was also purchased from Speedway Motors.

Kookie rising

When it came to mounting the glass fibre body to the chassis, Johnny figured he could give the T some of that Kookie Kar rake by channelling it three inches over the frame rails at the firewall, but then rising up to stock height at the back. Next, he had to find a suitable motor to power the T, the sort of thing that would have been right at home in any show rod of the ’60s. As it goes, he didn’t have to look much further than fellow Dead Man’s

° Engine is a stock, ’64-vintage 327 Chevy with an Edelbrock tri-power inlet and three Holley 94s. Corvette script valve covers and Speedway chromed pipes complete the look.

Curve club member, Jeff Bornstein, who offered up a 1964-vintage 327 Chevy for the car. With a trifecta of Holley carbs, rebuilt by Steve’s Carburetor in Lyndhurst, New Jersey, on an Edelbrock manifold up top, along with a set of chromed bonnet air filters, it’s the perfect powerplant for the look he was after.

Intrigued by the apparent additional legroom in Johnny’s car, I did some research. Turns out the Speedway ’23 T tub is exactly the same length (52 inches) as an original, the same width at the cowl (26½in) but at 45 inches wide appears to offer a couple of inches of additional width, though that could just be down to the different construction methods. Must be the camera angle in this picture then!

Hey, it’s supposed to be like the ’60s, man.

Bornstein further helped out with the exhaust, offering up a set of Speedway chrome lake-style headers with turnouts to both help with the look and tone of the classic Chevy mouse motor, while another club member, Mike Hickey, came up with the cast aluminium Corvette valve covers. For easy cruising, behind the motor is a rebuilt two-speed Powerglide transmission, stirred into life by a 23-inch shifter with hand carved Tiki knob.

Shimrin’ Cornbread

With all the main components in place, the chassis was torn down and Johnny sent the frame and body over to North Jersey

Rear three quarter shot visually hides the additional length in the wheelbase, and really emphasises the big ’n’ little combination of the wheels and tyres. Were he interested, Ralph Nader would have something to say about the position of the Model T-style, ninegallon tank behind the tub!

Kustoms for Russ Montelbano to lay down a custom mix of House of Kolor Shimrin’ 2 series materials, finished off with HOK UC35 clear. Once it was completed, Montelbano posted some pictures of the body and chassis online to take a pole on what to name the one-off colour. You can imagine the responses were very varied but, in the end, he settled on Cornbread, which probably won’t mean a great deal to our British readers! With all the fundamental work done, it was now time to re-assemble the T, and to come up with a name for the car too, of course. Once again, various members of the club, now good friends, including ‘Midnight’ Mario Colasuonno and Mark Glaz, helped with the process of turning a bunch of rebuilt and beautifully painted parts into a car that Johnny could actually drive.

 …while this hand-carved tiki head shifts the Powerglide between gears.

Being a Dead Man’s Curve Car Club car, there was only one company to turn to when it came to the crowning rollers, Johnny choosing Radir Tri-Ribs with bullet centre caps, 15 x 6s in the front and 15 x 10s out back, wrapped up tight in a pair of Uniroyal 5.60-15 wide whites, complemented by Radir / M/T 8.20-15 whitewall slicks out back.

 As there’s no roof to the Tiki T, the tuck ’n’ roll interior has been done in marine vinyl.

To do that he’d need some lights, so up front a set of 1926 / ’27-style Ford headlights were mounted, while a set of later 1932 tail lights sit on stainless mounts just below the Model T-style nine-gallon fuel tank and light the way at the rear. With an American Wiring harness threaded through the car and hooked up in all the right places, including to a full set of white-faced Stewart Warner Wings gauges, a Grant wood rim wheel, tinted, 14-inch windscreen and dual side mirrors in place, all that was needed was something for Johnny to sit on.

Marine parade

For that, the car was turned over to Jeff Braen at Falls Automotive in Little Falls, New Jersey, with instructions to “make it look kinda ’60s”, and use marine grade vinyl please as this hot rod ain’t going to be getting no lid!

a tour de force of the 'stripers art, and no mistake

At the start of the project, Johnny’s dad was taking an active interest in the car but sadly passed away before it was finished due to the pandemic. Johnny therefore dedicates this build to him, and says he’s fortunate to have many of his Dead Man’s Curve brothers nearby to support him and keep him going through the tough times that followed and to help out when he needed it most. So, stand up and be counted, ‘English’ Rich Green, Mario Colasuonno, Mark Glaz, Mike Hickey and Jeff Bornstein, and not forgetting Johnny’s wife, Jilly, who was right there with him along the way. CC

Having by now settled on the Tiki T name and a Polynesian theme for the project, a couple of custom surfboard details were added, in the form of the MotoMeter-style gauge up front and throttle linkage, while the very talented hands of Julian ‘Mister J’ Braet brought it all to life with the simply divine pinstriping and Tiki T artwork. It’s the latter that probably catch people’s attention initially, but take a moment to follow that exquisite pinstriping through the car, flowing from the grille surround up front along both the frame and body, through the interior and out to the fuel tank and axle out back. It’s a tour de force of the 'stripers art, and no mistake.  There’s not much to a ’23 T cockpit, but Johnny chose a Grant wood rim steering wheel and a full set of Stewart Warner Wings gauges comprising speedo, rev counter, oil and water temperature and voltage.

stunning, and my wife was definitely keener on a car than the bikes we had.” The seed re-sown, John started to think more seriously about embarking on a hot rod project, but it took a few more years to find the right vehicle. “I decided a van would be ideal for me and, having seen those Pops,

It was big, ugly and just right though, when he visited one of the all-day bike shows in Newmarket. “The show took up the whole of the High Street,” he recalls. “It was a beautiful sight, and a couple of guys turned up in customised Ford Pops. As the van was on the road, John took it straight for an MoT test to find out what needed doing to it.

Ticket first

“Amazingly, it passed, so I took the pink slip, import documents and MoT ticket to my local DVLA office to get it registered. “Shortly after that, with the help of family and good pals, we had the van stripped and ready for blasting. Although the bodywork was straight, it needed plenty of repairs, and that was the point I realised the limitations of my own metalworking abilities. So, having asked around, I was directed towards Wisbech Engineering for chassis work.” Then he received a letter from the DVLA

asking him to take the D2 to Norwich for inspection. No problem, he put the engine in the back of the van, loaded the blasted body onto a trailer and off he went… “Because I had stripped the van, the engine was not in situ and the seat was back at my lock-up, I was refused a registration as it was not considered a complete vehicle,” he reports. Several letters, photos of the van prior to disassembly and dogged persistence resulted in an offer of a Q plate, not an age-related registration. Disheartened, John withdrew his application.

The wizard of S.I.D

Undeterred about the build, though, he followed up further recommendations for a good bodywork guy and contacted S.I.D in Great Yarmouth, ideal as that’s his home town. “Sharon there impressed me with her knowledge and ‘can-do’ attitude. Jon

strange twist, that worked in John’s favour. “After a few weeks’ wait, I was told a guy was coming out to assess the vehicle. That was a bit of a tense time, but what a knowledgeable chap, he knew his stuff alright, and recommended an age-related plate. I was well made up. “If I’m honest, there were a couple of times over the years when I thought of giving up as I couldn't see the end ever

I don't think I stopped smiling for a month In the end, it took 12 years from buying the van to getting it over the finish line, and John freely admits it was a big learning curve. And that if he knew at the start what he knows now, it probably would have taken a year or two off that time. Eventually, though, all that was left was to contact the DVLA and set the registration process in motion once again. By then, his local office had been shut down but, in a

coming, but I’m glad I kept at it. When I finally screwed the number plates on, I don't think I stopped smiling for a month. And then, to top it all, the van won Best of Show at Stonham Barns.” CC

The crrowds of British race fans really didn’t know what to expect when he lined up for his very first run at Santa Pod in September 1978, but Sammy literally blew them away ass he instantly becam me the quickestt driver overr the standing quarrter in Europe. At that point in n time, there had only been n one pass below six seconds, and herre was Sammy coasting his Vega-bodied Va anisshing Point projectile th hrough the top-end d traps in 4.94 seconds at 22 25mph after runniing out of fuel at half track. The age of rocke et power had arrived, and would become a headline attraction over th he next few yea ars. Before that memorable wee ekend was complete, Sammyy had return ned best numbers of 4.41 / 290, and his name was on everyone’s lipss as the sttunned onlookers digested just wha at they ha ad witnessed. Hydrogen pero oxide fuel was the key to these amazing g times, which werre not dependent on sup per grippy tracks, or eve en the latest develop pments in racing g tyres, as the pure thrust of a rocket was oblivious to the problems faced d by wheel-driven vehicles. The biigge est issues usually arose at the otther end, as our fearless driver atttempted to slow w his lightweight car before he’d run ou ut of track.

Popular dra aw

What made those early years seeing Vanishing Point run n so special was as much to do with the man n himself. Sammy would alwa ays make time to talk to everyone who wanted to o meet him, chatting to anybody like they were a best friend. His easygoing natu ure was a prromoter’ss dream, as it ensured Sa ammy was always a popular draw. Luckily for us over here in the UK, the NHRA werre minded to outlaw w rocket ca ars, as they consid dered them too dan ngerous du ue to the huge speeds they were achieving. Th heir loss was Eu urope’s gain. Given th he, quite literally, exxplosive po ower on tap, and the difficulty stop pping one once

th he fuse was lit, one might have expected Sammy to be tense during the build up to a passs. But after purging the rocket motor with h a quick blast to warm it up, there folllowed an eerie silence as the car was pu ushed towards the start line. What people mayy not have heard, and still makes me chuckle, was the interaction at that point betw ween the driver and chief starter, Stu Brad dbury, who would manoeuvre the car into o position. In n a squeaky little voice, Sammy would whiisper, “Let me out, let me out!” It totally cau ught Stu off balance the first time it happene ed, and demonstrated the kind of character Sam mmy was. I first saw Sammyy running three years prior to his debut in this country, when he was unsuccessfully trying to qualify for Top Fuel at the NHRA Supernats. He had competed in various classes, and d had alre eady made passes in the Pollution Pa acke er rocket dragster belonging to Tonyy Fox. At that

Not one to stand d stiill, Sammy next brrought over his Oxygen rocket dragster for the Septtember ’81 event. Two cars running gave us the chan nce to witness the spectaccle of side-by-side, four-se econd rocket races, as he and Al Eirdam took k part in a series of stunning encounters.

Musical chairss

As a bonus, Sammy wa as invited to make a pass in Gladiator at that event, the first time he had driven a Fuel Funny Car for severa al years. That left him wiith a big smile on hiis face, even though it was more than th hree seconds off his normall pace. Sammy then invited ou ur own Allan Herridge to race ag gainst him by piloting Vanishing Po oint. Bootsie was not going to pass up that op pportunity, and clocked the first four by a European driver in the process. With an eye on the possible publicity from setting a world record, Sammy converted Oxygen to a sle edge by bolting on a set of

the pure thrrust of a ro ocket wass oblivious to the problem ms faced by y wheel-d driven vehicles time, Sam mmy was preparing g the first rocket Funny Ca ar, Spirit of ’76, which sported a Mustang g body. It received d much attention and a leg gend was born. Then came e the first of the Vanishing g Point cars, mak king g big strides performance-wise e, which ultim mately led to this genre of vehiicle being ou utlaw wed by the NHRA. Vanisshing g Point would eventually dip into th he thrree-second zone, with terminal spee eds of way over 300mph when it ran at Santa Pod d. It’s worth noting though th hat rarely, if ever, would the projectile be fuelled to ru un the whole quarter under po ower, so te erminal speeds were usually not representative of what it had the potenttial to o achieve. To put that into perspective, Sa ammy had one hand on the ’chute release as he launch hed, just to ensure he didn’t co ome to a sttop in the next county! The sheerr acceleration away from the line off his cars was unlike anything else we had evver witnesssed.

skis. He prompttly set a world record for rocket power ru unning on ice, at a staggering 248mph. You ca an only start to imagine the stopping distan nce required after that blast! Incidentally, tha at record still stands to this day, despite a quite recent attempt to better it. By the mid-’8 80s, the era of super-quick rocket raccing was effectively at an end. Sammy provided d much assistance to Henk Vink in the constructiion of his six-second rocket bike, and would return n himself nearly a decade later. The reccord times had d gone by then, though, with h problems sourcing quality fuel causing major issues. Sammy returned in 2002 to run at Santa Pod’s Speedfreaks Ball, where he recorded d a low five in Vanishing g Point. Sadly, that would be his last visit to the UK as, later that year, the ever-popular racer was caug ght up in a blast and killed d doing his day job working on a Texas oil field. A shocking end for the memorable character who created d some magic memoriess. CC

Remember when...

01  I’m not sure why we titled Bob Jeffries’ Fordson Fraudson as it was the real deal, resurrected from a rotten ’shell found locally to where he lived.

A further tenuous link is that Andy Lee whittled the steering column for the car, and he also built a well-known, but very different, car using a ’34 Corner roadster body. Small world, innit? Accompanying it in progress reports were Carlos Nunes’ one-of-a-kind 105E Anglia stepside pick-up and Steve Drew’s two-doored PA Cresta.

I

t doesn’t always work out, but we try and find something relevant to the current issue in each of th he old issues we look back on in th hese pages. And this month’s tenuous link is ’34 Corner. The car on th his month’s cover is built around the creattions of Chris Boyle and, in this issue from 1993, we had a progress report on John Cross’ roadster, which wa as al as als lso buiilt it around Mr. Boyle’ss gl gla lass a fibrre re han ndi nd diw iwo wor ork. Ol Old hands will reca all al ll John’ss car we went on to o win n Best in Britain an n mad nd d th de the he cove e of CC in er June 1994, but whe en we we visiit ite ted ed his h garage in the spring of ’93 it was but a freshly painted body on a Saturn Industries chassis.

this month’s tenuous link is ’34 Corner Fluttering out from between the pages this month came a Britannia Music Club leaflet – from whence you could surreptitiously snag a couple of soft porn vids for free with your copy of Lethal Weapon – a Merlin Motorsport cat ca atalogue, t one of those ads for a ludicrously expen ex n nsive Franklin Mint diecast model and a she eet of o CC stickers. Ove e in the tech department, we called er upon up p our main men Jim Maxwell, Tim Cook and Rob Loaring to school us. The former recalled that infamous day in 1964 when the Chrysler Corporation changed the face

 Dave Ca annon’s trusty Pilot came in handy again this month to demonstrate the noble art of fitting bear claw latches to prevent your mate (or your dad in my case) falling outt when you give it large at a roundabout.

 As we said in contents, it’s not a taxi and it’s never been to Tijuana. Still, it did have a blown and injected genuine Boss 302 motor, and that’s good enough for us.

of racing and rodding forever by dropping the H-bomb. Yep, Feb 9 1964 was the official launch date of the all-mouth, all-trousers 426 Hemi, the eng g gine that went on to dominate in NASCAR (for a yea ar anyway, until the other ar manufacture ers an and se eri er rie ies org o ga ganisers a threw their toys out of o th theirr pram ms and con ms nsp ns spired p to have it bann ned ne ed) d an nd th nd then profe p ession nal drag na racing for, well, forre rev eve ver er. r Rob Loaring, meanwhile, to too ook o uss th thr hro rough h the ups and downs (pun intended) of choosing the correct pistons and rings for a performance engine. “This thing is a minefield!” said Rob in no uncertain terms, but followed that up with a detailed explanation of why. And if you want a decent explanation of the complex job(s) a drag slick has to do during a run then Tim’s piece will be what you’re after. If that wasn’t enough data input for you, Melvyn Record did his best to explain Competition Index Controlled (CIC) racing, or in other words the Comp’ Eliminator class. If you race in it, you’ll understand it,, if you watch it from the stands, you’lll almost

certainly be at least a little confused. This excerpt might explain why: the two guys that won the 1990 (David Nicken ns) ns s) and d ’9 ’91 9 (David Ramp p NH py) NHR HRA RA Wiin insto on Com on mp’ mp p’ El Eli limin n nator seriess betw w en th wee hem won he n eigh e ht ht off the t 18 nation na nal even na nts in n ’92 byy raccin c ng the sa a ame cars in difffere f ent nt classses s at ea eac ach ch event, depending on wh who ho the h competitors were, and tuning their indexes to suit. “You don’t necessarily need to have the quickest car in the pits to win the races. Having the most consistent one will usually do the trick,” was Melvyn’s summation. That clears that up then.

2 8 19 This thing is a minefield!

Mervyn also continued his interview with ex-pat alcohol dragster racer, Steve Read, who might just be unique in being the only British drag racer to have raced his own car(s) competitively in Europe, Australia and America in the same season. Back to the features, and Mike Key paid a visit to the brothers Townend, Phil and Gary, who were well ahead of the pick-up curve and had four Chevys, with another four on the go. What we particularly liked about their approach was the trucks looked largely stock, but one had an LS6 454 in it, another a blown LT1 small block and the third a tri-power 283. The American meat in this month’s sandwich came in the form of Don Demarnik’s ’48 Anglia.

 John Cross’ car was reputed dly the first roadster body popped out of ’34 Corner mould ds. A great advertt for the product as it went on to win Be est in Britain n in ‘93.

…and Mervyn Record on the subtle nuances of Comp’ Eliminator dra ag racing.

Dubbed the Tijuana Taxi (by us, not the car’s owner), it was stuffed with a full bore Boss 302 Ford mo otor with BDS 6-71 blower and 16-nozzle injjection and had a dropped tube axle up p front with 27-inch wide 9-inch and 14 x 15 Weld Drag Stars out back. It ran nine dead at 140mph at the drags an nd could be driven there and back. Ye eah, yeah, but how much to Clapham Junction mate? Finally, asssuming you read your magazines backwards anyway – we had Bob Jefffries’ resurrection of the Thames that was on the cover. Starting with h the very definition of a basket case, Bob sorted the metalwork before having his good buddy, Mervv Barnett, build him a kicked-up chassis, into which he dropped a narrowed Austin Westminsterr rear end, then slung an HA Viva IFS under the front, a V8 in th he hole and d then, er, sold it. He bought it back a few years later an nd carried on where he’d left off, ha aving Pat Cuss pop some of his ’glass pa anels out of the moulds to finish the bo odywork, visiting the local scrappy fo or some of the other bits and then co ompleted itt with a high level of paint an nd polish, hence its pride of place po osition on this month’s cover. Oh, and th hat motor? It was a 3.5 Rover V8. See, th hose tenuous links just keep on coming.

Remember this? The star of the British show for me in this mo onth’s issu ue was Mark (or Bob as he was ca alled him in one of the captions) Grant’s su uper clean n 210 Chevy vy. y Our acco ompanying story said Mark ha ad been in nspired to build a Roarin’ Ra at-alike, but by the time he actually ca ame to ow wn a Tri-Chev trends had gone alll a bit Pro o Street. Consequently, his ca ar was much lower to the ground, and de evilishly tu ubbed over a Nick Butler / Au uto Imagin nation-built chassis.

would still hold its own at a show today Th he 454 Ch hevy vyy under the ’glass flip front was the same e one the car came into this coun ntry with, backed by a TH400 auto’, but the big ’n’ litttle Weld Pro Stars were Mark’s addiition, as was the fresh paint job and very ’90’s red ‘n’ grey interior by Vinyl Tec. Ovverall, it was a classy combination of Britissh and Am merican Pro Street ideas that wou uld still ho old its own at a show today. We like this ca ar a lot. CC
