WELCOME Hello and welcome to the 2024 West Country Farming & Machinery Show.

Being based in the south west and working with excellent agricultural companies on a day-to-day basis, last year we at Agricultural Trader realised that there wasn’t a professional show for our industry based in our area, where those companies can show off their machinery and services.

So we created the West Country Farming & Machinery Show in 2023 and we were so pleased with its success.

Last year, over 2,000 attendees and 90 exhibitors attended the West Country Farming & Machinery Show and this year is even bigger, with more visitors pre-registered and more trade stands both indoors and outside here at the brilliant Westpoint Arena.

Our aim for the event is to truly showcase all that the south west agricultural and farming industry has to offer and to come together to celebrate all that it stands for. We hope that today gives you all the chance to do just that, as well as network, get up to date on what the industry has to offer, and simply catch up with fellow farmers and agricultural workers.

This is why we have brought together all the very best exhibitors this sector has to offer, covering traders for the very best machinery and products, to financial and business services, plus much more.

ADVISING THE WEST COUNTRY FOR 150 YEARS This year marks the 150th anniversary of Stags and to celebrate the occasion the firm will be fundraising for four charities across the south west.

Throughout this momentous year, the teams from each of Stags’ 22 offices will be taking part in a number of challenging and fun events in an effort to raise a total of £50,000.

These include a 420-mile cycle ride between each of its office locations and a ‘Great Stags Bake Off’.

Every penny of the money raised will help to support cancer patients and their families across the region thanks to its chosen charities, Ducks & Drakes in Dorset, SURE in Somerset, FORCE in Devon and the Tanya’s Courage Trust in Cornwall.

Since its very beginnings in 1874 as four rival firms of Devon agricultural valuers, Stags has continued to evolve and expand, the company says. In 1923, the four firms merged to become a single practice under the name of Cockram, Dobbs and Stagg before expanding into Somerset in 1950 when it amalgamated with renowned Wellington auctioneers, Knowlman & Sons. Still predominantly livestock auctioneers, this new firm – now catchily

South Molton Market in the 1900s known as Dobbs, Stagg, Knowlman & Co – organised regular markets and farm sales which were advertised locally in parish churches.

1979 saw the introduction of the now familiar stag head logo under the new, punchier, name of Stags and the subsequent decades saw the firm expand its five offices to cover all major towns throughout the south west. During this time Stags also expanded its specialisms to encompass property sales, lettings, farm agency, professional services, estate management, planning and commercial services.

In 2017 and 2018, the newly acquired Tavistock firm, Ward & Chowen, and Totnes firm, Michelmore

Hughes, became Stags’ 21st and 22nd offices. Today, with 200 members of staff covering every inch of the west country, Stags offers a blend of good old-fashioned values that are true to its roots and innovative ideas in line with modern-day expectations and digital advancements.

REMAPPING DELIVERS PERFORMANCE BOOST HD Farmer and contractor Sandra Hamilton, who runs Palacehill Farm in the Scottish Borders, tells us she chose professional remapping to increase the reliability and performance from her two frontline John Deere tractors.

“Wheels need to be turning every day for us to make money,” she says. “When we had issues back in 2020, we were baling at the time, and I needed a quick and reliable fix.

Tractors are expensive so we had to be sure what we were doing was safe and going to solve the problem.”

The farm has two main John Deere tractors, a 2017 6215R and 2017 6155R. Problems began to surface on her John Deere 6215R and after contacting Alan Blakie at A A Services, he advised that an ECU remap would fix the problems and offer a safe performance increase within the limits of the engine.

A A Services is part of a registered authorised agent network for Avon Tuning HD, a leading agricultural engine remapping company. It writes and supplies bespoke ECU maps for tractors requiring reliable and safe power and torque increases along with curing reliability issues.

“When the remap was first added to the

Sandra Hamilton 6215R, our main operator Ross Turnball asked me for another furrow on the plough, as the extra power had made such a difference to the way the tractor operated with the same implement,” Sandra continues.

When drilling, the remap allows the 3m Horsch Express 3 KR combination drill to be pulled around 2kph quicker than beforehand.

A common downside levelled at remapping is an increase in fuel use due to power advances, but Sandra says this hasn’t been the case, and any slight increase that may have occurred has been offset by increased work efficiencies.

“We haven’t seen a fuel increase and, if there has been, it certainly isn’t that obvious compared to before the remaps,” Sandra says.

“The increased work rates that allow us to complete jobs quickly and efficiently have certainly been more important to our operation.” www.avontuning.co.uk

The Novacat V 10000 combination brings together high output with intelligent technology and standout features.

The mower combination of two 3.5m cutter units is available as a plain disc mower, tine-type conditioner (ED) or roller conditioner (RC). Pöttinger also offers the proven cross conveyor belt collector and cross flow (CF) auger for swath merging.

A unique feature to the V 10000 is the ability to detach the conditioner unit in a matter of minutes and convert a mower conditioner model to a plain disc mower. This is particularly useful for those wanting to cut high value forage crops such as clover, lucerne or whole crop.

The Novacat V 10000 makes working widths of

up to 10.02 metres possible with hydraulic working width adjustment. This adjustment can either be controlled manually via ISOBUS compatible controls or via the optional steering sensor which activates width adjustment in relation to the steering of the tractor.

The V 10000 has an option of two operating systems, the Selectline system is ISOBUScapable, all functions are pre-selected using the control terminal and then carried out using the tractor's spool valves. Only one double-acting hydraulic connection is required. With the Profiline control system you control the mower unit using an ISOBUS terminal and the hydraulic oil is supplied via load sensing.

Another optional feature is the automatic tilt control system. On slopes, the mower units are automatically side-shifted so that no uncut grass is left

standing between the front and rear mower units. When the additional groupers are specified, the belt speed is automatically controlled so that when working along contours, the belt conveying uphill runs at a higher speed, and vice versa. This guarantees uniform swaths.

A new feature is Section Control activation, using the standard job computer.

In combination with AEF TC-SC (Task Controller Section Control) certified ISOBUS terminals and Pöttinger Connect, the individual mower units are automatically raised and lowered at the headland, depending on the GPS position.

KUHN DEBUTS NEW PLOUGH RANGE KUHN Farm Machinery will debut a new Vari-Master M plough series at the West Country & Farming Machinery Show, alongside a selection of arable and grassland implements, which you will find on stand 9.

The new plough range features two models and sits between the current Master 123 and Master 153 ranges. Built on the strengths of these two ranges, the VariMaster M models offer users a choice of modern headstocks and a redesigned depth wheel in four and five furrow configurations.

Alongside the plough, visitors to the show will find a KUHN Striger 300 striptill cultivator and KUHN Axis 40.2 M EMC fertiliser spreader, both aimed at increasing precision and versatility for arable growers. For grassland users, an FBP 3135 combination baler wrapper will show the benefits of ensiling forage at the time of baling to reduce contamination and preserve quality. A Multi-Longer EP 7457 E-TPAL hedge cutter features a telescopic head offering a 7.4m reach and completes the show stand.

KUHN’s arable and connected services product specialist, Edd Fanshawe, says the show offers a great shop window before the season kicks off. “Our stand will feature

a wide range of products that will increase efficiency for both livestock and arable farmers. The Vari-Master M plough will be shown for the first time in the UK and the new features will be welcomed by current users to aid road transport and longevity.”

The Vari-Master M features two headstock options in addition to the standard unit. A GODRIVE headstock features an oscillating system for road transport, allowing a +/- 40º steering angle during transport and the option to store the plough in a butterfly position when not in use. The second option is the GODRIVE OPTIDRIVE and features the road transport movement of GODRIVE, but with OPTIDRIVE mechanical suspension for additional comfort on headlands and increased lifespan of the plough’s major components.

A new Work and Roll combi depth wheel concept for the Vari-Master M 4E5 model features a redesigned swingarm and automatic folding of the depth wheel during turnover to prevent users requiring an excessive lift height.

FULL ATTACHMENT RANGE Sunward Operating is the Sunward dealership covering Devon, Cornwall, Somerset and Dorset for its range of excavators (from 1 tonne up to 32.5 tonnes), as well as scissor lifts and skid steers.

0% finance is currently available for up to 18 months with heavily subsidised finance for up to five years, as well as a five-year warranty.

Furthermore, for parts, Sunward runs a next day service from its European headquarters in Belgium.

Its excavator range features Yanmar engines, Bosch Rexroth hydraulic pumps, Japanese pumps and all European components.

A full attachment range is available to complement the Sunward excavators available. The range of Sunward excavators available for viewing are based in Devon with distributor, AMIA. The Sunward range of scissor lifts go from

6.5m working heights up to 20m with both electric and diesel models available. Some models are available to view in the AMIA visitor centre.

Finally, Sunward also manufactures a range of skid steers. There are three models in the range which go from 750kg lifting capacity to 1100kg to 1300kg and are powered by Kubota engines.
