Fruit Focus’ mission is to be the leading event covering UK fruit growers’ informational needs. This year, visitors can take part in knowledge exchange opportunities in the NFU Fruit Forum seminar tent, by joining the popular NIAB research tours and by following the BASIS/ NRoSO knowledge trails for continuing professional development.
Join the NFU’s seminar at 10am in the NFU Fruit Forum to hear about their priorities to
help champion horticulture over the coming years. At 11am, hear from industry experts about the regulatory future of crop protection and how the UK may be adapting in a postBrexit regulatory world. Both seminars will be followed by extensive Q&A sessions, providing an opportunity for discussion and a sharing of ideas that will help progress these key industry initiatives.
In addition to the main seminars outlined above, speakers will, throughout the day,
cover technical topics including the latest developments in breeding, pollination, integrated pest management, biological control, artificial intelligence and drone spraying.

The UK fruit industry continues to face major challenges which it must address if it is to remain sustainable. Diminishing numbers of agrochemical products to control some key insect pests and fungal diseases, increasing energy, fuel and production costs, pressure to move towards ‘net-zero’, and uncertainty over available harvest labour. When offset against declining returns for their produce, many fruit growers can be forgiven for re-evaluating their short and long-term business futures.
One constant in the ever evolving fruit industry is NIAB’s liaison with the industry to develop scientific research projects that seek to find solutions to some of the most pressing problems.
NIAB’s crop science team is working on a series of projects that aim to use resources more responsibly by developing precision techniques to produce more fruit with fewer
inputs. It is also investigating how fruit plants respond to the higher temperatures that we are experiencing as a result of climate change and how growers might adapt. Additional work is exploring ways of managing soil health and nutrition in vineyards using crop covers.
The focus of NIAB’s pest and pathogen ecology team is to understand how to harness naturally occurring organisms on fruit plants and in the environment, to prevent the build-up of damaging pests and diseases. Work has recently begun to develop more precise pollination in strawberry to improve the nutritional value of the fruit and its shelf-life. Coir recycling has been another major focus for the team, collaborating with the industry to fine tune the process and reduce reliance on virgin coir product.
Growing Kent & Medway is funding a number of projects in the food, drink and horticultural sectors where NIAB has teamed up with industry partners to investigate novel ways of
improving circularity and sustainability within commercial businesses.
Visitors to Fruit Focus will have the chance to learn more about how NIAB is supporting the fruit industry during the NIAB Research Hour which takes place in the NFU Fruit Forum between 12 and 1pm. Five presentations covering coir recycling, large raspberry aphid control, varietal resistance to spotted wing drosophila, precision pollination in strawberry, and apple canker control will be included.
Farm tours to the WET Centre, Plum Demonstration Centre and Research Vineyard will allow visitors to hear about their latest outputs, whilst a tour of NIAB’s entomology research tunnels will reveal ongoing work to

improve precision pollination in strawberry. A tour of the Produce Quality Centre run by the University of Greenwich will offer the latest research on post-harvest technology.
A research tour has also been set up which will take place on the NIAB/Growing Kent & Medway exhibition stand to showcase a number of Growing Kent & Medway funded projects including coir recycling, SWD resistant varieties, improving the uniformity of propagated raspberry canes and the use of fruit plant waste to create polymers used in produce packaging.
Be sure to attend or listen in to at least some of these talks and tours to make the most of this year’s event.

As the premier event in the fruit industry’s calendar, Fruit Focus is a key gathering that brings UK fruit growers the latest political and technical developments through the ever-popular Fruit Forums proudly sponsored by the NFU.
The NFU will, as usual, host two seminars during the day. The first will focus on priorities for UK horticulture. Only days after the General Election, we will discuss what a new government agenda might look like and what the sector needs from their first 100 days in power. This year, we’ll also put a spotlight focus on farm assurance, and how you can get involved with the independent Farm Assurance Review.
The second session you’ll hear from industry experts on their opinions about the regulatory future of crop protection. Without an updated National Action Plan in place, and a continued loss of actives, what does the future hold? We’ll also hear from Horticulture Crop Protection, now over one year old, about their achievements and future ambitions.

Innovating strawberry cultivation and marketing through breeding
Breeding is a key source of innovation in both the cultivation and marketing of strawberries. By developing low-chill varieties, everbearer, June-bearer strawberries, growers can find diverse solutions to enhance value. A tale of three sawflies
Sawflies are sporadic pests of several horticultural crops. Although pheromones have been identified for many pine sawflies of the Diprionidae family, the pheromone of only one species from the Tenthredinidae family had previously been reported. It was proposed that virgin females of the yellowheaded spruce sawfly, Pikonema alaskensis, used unsaturated aldehydes derived by degradation of unsaturated cuticular hydrocarbons as sex pheromone to attract males.

Circular economy at work:
Biostimulants from waste wool
This seminar will take a look at a new technology - circular in nature - utilising hydrolysed proteins, peptides and amino acids naturally derived from sheep wool. This technology assists plant biological processes in response to abiotic stress and improves crop quality and yield. The combination of hydrolysed proteins, peptides, and amino acids has a diverse range of actions, including stimulating hormonal synthesis pathways, chlorophyll synthesis, nutrient uptake and assimilation, and plant metabolism. Benefits include reduced transplant shock, boosted plant metabolism and green-up, improved nutrient uptake and assimilation, increased plant growth, vigour, and tillering, improved fruit yield and quality, reduced phytotoxicity from herbicide application, increased tolerance to abiotic stress.

Holistic approach to plant disease management Plants are becoming increasingly understood as a dynamic system of constituent organs and communities of microbes housed by these structures. The traditional agronomic approach has largely overlooked the importance of the interaction between plants and their associated microbes – only focusing on the emergence of diseases from these microbiomes. By implementing a holistic agronomic approach, growers are able to tailor all of their inputs, not just pesticides, to positively manipulate the activity of the plant and its microbiomes. This enables growers to exploit natural processes that create effective barriers to exclude and combat pathogens without reliance on curative chemical fungicides – avoiding infection and facilitating quicker and stronger plant growth. This preventative approach, therefore, reduces input costs whilst ensuring crop success –enabling both environmentally and financially sustainable crop production.

Soft and top fruit spraying with XAG drones
This seminar will address the use of drones in UK horticulture for soft, top and vineyard use including but not limited to:
• Precision application of products without damage to soil structure or compaction
• Variable rate application of fertiliser and foliar feeds when coupled with survey drone
• Down wash from props allows for better all over leaf contact of product, particularly for mildew issue, which can be treated with sulphur or copper
• Variable rate spraying (map created by survey drone) for thinning of flowering, to ensure better fruit sizing and uniformity

Horticulture Strategy builds on sector progress
The NFU has launched a new revised growth strategy, calling on all political parties to build on the progress already made and to back UK Horticulture and Potatoes beyond the next election.
When the strategy was initially launched in spring 2023, it attracted a lot of attention across the industry and a number of the asks were directly reflected at the No. 10 Farm to Fork summit held a number of weeks later.
This included promises to review planning barriers, access to energy support schemes, labour availability and future funding for horticulture.
NFU Horticulture and Potatoes Board chair Martin Emmett said that the sector has enormous potential for growth which, with the right political and supply chain backing, growers are ready to deliver.
However, he warned that the industry’s recent decline in production would continue if politicians did not act quickly.
10 BUILDING BLOCKS FOR GROWING SUCCESS
The NFU has identified ten critical building blocks that will be necessary for growers to develop and grow the industry:
1. ACCESS TO LABOUR
A minimum five-year rolling seasonal worker scheme, with suitable length visas, no wage differential from the National Living Wage or unrealistic cap on worker numbers.
2. ACCESS TO AFFORDABLE AND SUSTAINABLE ENERGY SUPPLIES
Greater recognition of energy intensive horticulture sectors within current and future energy support schemes, and an expansion of grid infrastructure to support investment in renewables.
3. ACCESS TO CROP PROTECTION
An enabling crop protection policy which ensures the UK is not disadvantaged against its global competitors.
4. ACCESS TO WATER
As the sector is vulnerable to drought and the challenges from reductions / revocations of abstraction licences, greater investment is needed in infrastructure to collect, store and distribute water both on farms and within and between regions.
5. ACCESS TO SUSTAINABLE, GROWING MEDIA
A ban on the use of peat in commercial production is not the right approach. There is need for industry/ government collaboration to move towards peat-free in an environmentally and commercially sustainable way.
6. PRODUCTIVITY INVESTMENT
It is critical that a replacement for the EU Fruit and Veg Aid Scheme is finalised as soon as possible, which is more inclusive than the previous EU scheme, and that there are no further delays in its development.
7. ENABLING IMPORT CONTROLS FOR PLANTS AND PLANT PRODUCTS
Minimising the barriers and costs for importing plants and plant materials - the foundations of all horticultural productionwhile maintaining biosecurity.
8. FAIRNESS IN THE SUPPLY CHAIN
It is critical that growers can have open discussions and fair negotiations on cost price inflation with their customers.
9. ACCESS TO ENVIRONMENTAL FUNDING SCHEMES
Better recognition of horticulture in ELMs which reflects the variety of growing systems across the sector and the environmental benefits horticulture delivers.
10. AN ENABLING PLANNING POLICY
Greater consistency is needed in planning decisions to support - not restricthorticultural businesses’ ability to grow. This includes the provision of high quality, shortterm accommodation for seasonal workers.
STRONG FOUNDATION
Commenting on the launch of the renewed strategy, NFU Horticulture and Potatoes Board chair Martin Emmett said that the sector has “risen up the political agenda” recently, seeing some important commitments on its future.
However, he warned that growers have faced a number of challenges in recent years, ranging from labour shortages, sharp inflation and increased regulation, which has led to a hit in grower’s confidence to invest.
“This is a sector that the industry, supply chain and government all agree should see growth in the UK,” he said.
“Our revised strategy sets out the key government and supply chain policies which need to be addressed in order to deliver that growth.
“As we head towards a general election, it is imperative that all political parties get behind this strategy and help drive the sector forward.”
