SHOULD A EURO BUILT KUBOTA M7 MAKE IT ONTO YOUR USED BUYING LIST?

If you are in the used buying market for a tractor in the nominal 150hp power bracket, there is every chance there will be something to tempt from the ‘big four’ tractor makers. But should the three model Kubota M7 series, spanning a nominal 130hp to 170hp, also be on your used buying list?

Comment: Early M7 models no longer covered by the original warranty. Dealer prepared examples, with sound history and in good condition, and with around 5,500 hours start at £50K, hi-spec Premium KVT models from £56K. Access models regionally command similar money.

Starting point: Non-dealer, high hour models from £40,000. Kubota dealer examples seldom dip below £48,000.

Back in September 2015, there was a European agricultural press tour of Kubota’s purpose-built tractor plant in northern France. At the time, the factory in Dunkirk was yet to ramp up production, with teams of Kubota technicians working on the assembly tracks whilst huddles of new employees went through various training programmes ahead of the plant starting full production. It initially seemed a bit strange that Kubota would launch a new European factory before it was fully up and running, the more so as we had yet to learn a great deal about the tractors the plant was to produce. In hindsight, the planning was spot on. Kubota took the opportunity to show off the factory first and before it got busy. As an aside, the company had installed elevated platforms to enable visitors to view tractors as they are assembled but not get in the way. It is now clear Kubota wanted to send out two messages. Firstly, the focus of the new factory was producing a tractor specifically developed to meet European needs. Secondly, the factory

Starting point: Expect to pay from £45,000 for sound but high hour tractor, lower hour models with balance of factory warranty starting nearer £54K. Add around £2,500 for tractor with loader.

What does all of this have to do with buying a used M7? Quite a bit. Kubota stated it would invest €40million in European tractor production from 2017 and onwards, with a plan to produce over 3,000 tractors a year. The M7 had to hit the ground running, with the Japanese firm making it clear that the very first models would be trouble free right from the off. If you are looking to buy an early 2016 model year M7 you need to

know if that aim has been met. Now we have many years of hindsight to say Kubota did get the M7 right, with few reports of anything major to spoil what has proven to be a good record of dependability. Like any tractor, some users will have encountered the odd hiccup but, for the main, these have been the typical modern tractor problems such as damaged connectors in the wiring, duff sensors, the odd dodgy switch, the odd slipping drive belt and the need for the control software to be updated.

Comment: If you need a ‘new’ tractor in a hurry, you may be able to source a dealer’s ‘demo’ tractor before it has seen much action. Depends upon available stocks and supplies. Never be afraid to ask. Demonstrator models and specs vary regionally. If you spot something you like but it is not from your nearest Kubota dealer franchise, call your dealer to see if they can help.

Starting point: POA. Note to check if warranty upgrade option to 6,000hr is available.

The ease of operating Access tractors is a key plus, the main control, mechanical remote valve and pto engagement levers all being positioned exactly where you would expect. Some do not like the position of the radio and the heating and ventilation knobs but this is hardly a big deal. Note this gen 3 tractor has a darker panel finish than a gen 1 model, Kubota having made small tweaks to the cab to improve its ‘showroom’ appeal.

Comment: Ex-demonstrator Access models may include trailer air-brakes and an extra set of remote valves, but little else in the way of extras. Typically you will need to call the supplying dealer for pricing and many will already have a buyer lined up.

Starting point: Assume ex-demo models will retail for near list price if just a few months old, any extras coming as bonus. Hi spec demo Premium tractors can be fitted with a bigger monitor, front linkage and pto, climate control, power beyond etc. Need to compare against new if buying on finance. Do your sums.

Price: POA Note to check if warranty upgrade option to 6,000hr is available

Premium specification adds a side armrest control with electronically controlled remote valves, four coming as standard. When new, the Premium spec would have added around £8 to £10K to the tractor’s sticker price, with the popularity of this enhanced package varying both regionally and from year to year. Used Premium tractors may not always carry a higher price but a front linkage and pto, trailer air brakes, larger 12in monitor, power beyond and climate control will.

WHAT’S USED

Digital display within the dash is not overly burdened with detail but it will show key data such as the level in the AdBlue tank, if a service is due, how ‘full’ the particulate filter is and if there is pressure in the air brake reservoir. Engine hours is also shown here, so make sure you check this.

Major problems? None to suggest any serious flaws.

The reason why the M7 series has a good dependability record is in part down to the use of proven main components matched to Kubota transposing Japanese working practice to France. Kubota dealers in the UK suggest the company followed up on the progress of several tractors out in the field, keeping an eye out for any problems that needed to be resolved and monitoring how the tractors worked over extended periods.

NOW TO THE TRACTOR

Power comes from the established Japanese made Kubota 6.1 litre four-cylinder

Premium tractors are offered with a choice of 7inch (left) and 12inch PRO K-monitor. Clearly you will get what is fitted to a used buy. If a monitor is fitted, ask if it has had all the relevant software upgrades applied and if it can be used as an ISOBUS controller to operate any kit you may wish to hook up. engine. This initially met Stage IV emission regs for the first generation M7 models, moving to Stage IVb for the second series in 2019 and Stage V for the 2021 model year. Unlike other manufactures, Kubota did not use changes in emission ratings to alter the engine’s power, with rated outputs of 130hp, 150hp and 170hp applying to all three models regardless of series.

Model numbering has also stuck to a simple formular, although initially Kubota confused by listing the launch models as M7-130, M7-150 and M7-170 only for production tractors to carry M7131, M7151 and M7171 badges on the bonnet. A change to M7132, M7152 and M7172 followed for gen

2 models and M7-133, M7-153 and M7-173 for the current 3 series. Extra power kicks in at transport speeds of 20km/hr or above and for pto work, the first two models getting a 20hp power boost. This slims to a rather modest 5hp for the range topping 170hp tractors.

SIMPLE MODEL SPECS

At launch, the key factory specs on offer were Standard, Premium and Premium K-VT, Standard having its name altered to Access pretty much from the outset. The ‘entry level’ Access M7 models have an 80l/min hydraulic gear pump with up to four mechanical remote valves and no terminal inside the cab.

There are few noticeable differences between the cabs of the earliest (left) and current M7 models (right) although the latter have certain panels finished in a darker shade and sound proofing has been improved. Apart from the mirror covers to falling off and rear numberplate bracket proving liable or snapping on gen 1 models, fit and finish has been decent from day one.

Premium tractors come with four electronically controlled rear valves as standard, six as an option. A dealer will ensure the valve covers and overflow piping are in good order but still check. Damaged and missing covers are a good indicator of past care. Electronic valves do not like dirty oil and any coupler leaks are best remedied before you take delivery of the tractor. Work with a dealer so you both know what to expect when the tractor turns up in the yard.

In-cab connectivity should cover most plug-in needs. Note ventilator outlet near the rear window frame. The cab’s all-round visibility makes it something of a greenhouse in hot weather so check the air con works.

The Premium and Premium K-VT versions have a 110l/min swash plate piston pump for load-sensing hydraulics and up to five electrically controlled spools with time and flow control. The electric spools are operated using finger-tip switches with the option of an electric cross control ‘joystick’ for two valves. The joystick can also be used to operate a front-end loader, those made by Kubota coming with mechanical parallel control.

The K-monitor in the cab of Premium models comes in two sizes, 7inch and 12inch PRO, the latter typically to tractors fitted with the KVT transmission but not always so check. These monitors are well made and will be familiar to those with certain items of Kverneland kit where they carry the Tellus GO+ and Tellus PRO tags. Over the six years that the M7 models have been in production, the monitor interface has barely changed but the underlying software has seen several upgrades that will have been either installed in the field or when a tractor is serviced.

Both Access and Premium versions share the same gearbox, the M7 initially featuring a ZF T7226 robotic six-range, four-powershift transmission with power shuttle forward /reverse. This provides 24 forward and reverse speeds, with the option of a 16/16 low range creep box that allows working speeds as low as 450m/hr. Maximum speeds are 40km/hr at 1,650rpm with the option of 50km/hr. Automated shifting for both field and road are part of the package. Second and third generation M7 tractors have a revised ZF T7300 transmission with

30 forward and 15 reverse speeds, with six-powershifts in each of five-ranges.

Premium KVT stepless transmission models use the ZF Eccom 1.5 transmission. This delivers a maximum forward speed of 50km/hr at 1,780rpm. The original TRA16 rear axle, also made by ZF, offered 540, 540E, 1000 and 1000E pto speeds. Series 2 and current three models have a different TRA20 rear axle but it is essentially the same from a used buyer’s perspective.

The hydraulics are made by Bosch, the gear pump of Access models delivering up to 80l/min, the load-sensing unit fitted to Premium models having a rating of 110l/min. Four electronically controlled valves are standard on Premium models, with a further two as an option. Access models have three mechanical remotes with a fourth as an option. Remember, a set of valves are needed to operate the Dramone pick-up hitch. Power beyond connectivity is offered on Premium spec tractors, a point to note if you want to drive high volume hydraulic kit. Rear linkage lift capacity is 9,300kg, the optional Zuidberg front linkage having a 3,500kg capacity and 1,000rpm pto as a further spec choice. Walterscheid quick couplers and stabilisers are standard.

Moving on to the cab, the four-pillar design delivers impressive all-round visibility although the accommodation is a bit low on storage space. The fixtures and fittings are designed for utility, although Kubota has made the odd tweak to some of the fittings to make them more ‘showroom’ friendly. Or at least that is the claim.

WHAT’S USED

First generation models went through a couple of designs of metal exhaust stack enclosure, the securing fasteners on some tractors working loose which allowed the casing to rattle. Modified covers are typically fine. Gen 2 and 3 tractors, right, have plastic section covers, with the design changing between the model years to accommodate different emission control hardware. Check the covers are a good fit.

Climb into a M7 of any vintage and you will be hard pressed to spot anything, other from a few trim colour changes to separate the generations. Well-made and robust sum up the cab interior. As with any used tractor, the seat and its condition are a clue to past care and use, so look under any seat cover if fitted to check the seat pan. The seat itself has a wider pan and back on gen 2 and 3 models. Air conditioning is standard with full climate control an option.

Access tractors feature a control arm to the side of the seat, Premium models featuring a seat integrated armrest. Powershift and KVT models share a similar integrated drive lever to control the gearbox, with switches to work the rear linkage and two remote valves. If a monitor is fitted, it will offer Isobus implement

control with Reichhard GPS steering system listing as an option.

A point to note is that Kubota shares its Isobus tech with Kverneland, the latter having been a key developer of the concept back in the 1990s. There are a number of automated features that can be programmed into Premium models to include auto pto and headland turn management. More advance TIM, Tractor Implement Management is offered on the M7-173 Premium KVT. This ongoing development that can see the tractor work with implements, such as a Vicon baler, where it controls the tractor to automate bale wrap, drop and restart, doing away with the manual steps needed to operate the machine. If this is of interest, talk through what may be possible with a dealer.

WHAT’S USED

You can glean a great deal from the condition of the rear linkage. Look for play in the lower link arms, check the stabilisers and make sure the linkage levelling adjusts freely on both sides. Ensure the hitch balls are present and check the pick-up hitch for wear and damage. Also see if the drawbar or hitch hook (right) is stowed in its bracket. Rear mudguard protection is poor, so look around the rear axle and cab suspension area to ensure everything is in good order.

The diesel tank holds 330 litres, with 38 litres of AdBlue. Look for damage around the steps, on the front mudguards and the rear fenders. The latter can receive a bit of a battering and they are not cheap to replace. Paint fade appears not to be a problem on the M7, so expect the Kubota orange to be of the same hue on all panels.

Updates and developments continue to be made.

All M7 tractors have cab suspension, with a mechanical system as standard on Access modes and Hydac air suspension on Premium tractors. The latter does deliver a smoother ride but Access tractors cushion the operator decently enough. On a test drive, listen out for groans and clonks coming from the suspension, worn pivot points on high tractors having the potential to spoil the ride. The ‘air bags’ and air lines of the Hydac system are not known for problems but tractors that are run with muck that has built up around the system may run into problems of premature wear. The Hydac cab suspension is supplied by the same air compressor that runs the optional air brake

It is still a design weak spot. Check this area for corrosion.

system. The drive belt to the latter does need a periodic check for tension, along with the one driving the small pump for the air conditioning system. Allowing the belts to run slack causes premature wear.

Moving on, M7 tractors weigh upwards of 6,600kg plus, and have a relatively stubby 2.72m wheelbase. Those expecting to find a Kubota portal axle up front will find a Dana made beam instead, with hydro-pneumatic suspension as standard. This can be adjusted between soft, medium and hard settings. The front and rear axles are fitted with automatic differential locks, the front axle having a steering angle of 55°. Front axle brakes are not fitted, with trailed implement/trailer airbrakes listing as an option.

USED AVAILABILITY

Although the first M7 tractors became available in late 2015, sales in the UK and Ireland started in earnest from early 2016. The traditional Kubota customer base had tended to see the company’s M 135 GX, which incidentally has a similar wheelbase to the M7, being as large as they would need, so it took time for customers more familiar with higher powered models from other makes to consider an ‘orange’ model in the 130-170hp power bracket.

As to pricing, an entry level M7131 Access would have retailed for around £87,000 in 2016, a range topping M7171 Premium KVT

The Dana front axle is fitted with automatic diff locks and suspension that can be adjusted for firmness from the cab. Check the settings on a test drive. The axle turns through 55°, with the front mudguards pivoting on their mounts to avoid them hitting the body at full lock. Note the simple bracket and bolt stop. A bit crude but the system works.

nearer £125,000. That was strong money back then. Although finance packages helped, it took a while for users to cotton on to the fact that a Kubota tractor comes with a two-year/2,000 hour warranty as standard, with an impressive five-year/5,000hour factory warranty a widely taken up option. If the tractor is dealer serviced at the required 500 hour intervals, any balance of the warranty (with the option of a five year/6,000 hours on gen 3 tractors) can be passed on to the next owner. Add this to M7 models providing dependable performers, and new tractor sales started to gain momentum and with it the pool of used examples is now relatively healthy.

WHAT SHOULD YOU EXPECT TO PAY?

Older M7 tractors with an excess of 5,000 hours and out of warranty can sell from a shade under £40,000 from a non-franchised seller, Kubota dealer stock typically starting a bit higher for a similar tractor. Clearly you can pay more for a high specification tractor that is in decent order and fitted with lightly worn tyres, with nearer £50,000 representing a more realistic used buying starting point.

ACCESS V PREMIUM

Kubota brochures continue to list Standard as opposed to Access specification but they are the same. The key difference between Access and Premium models are:

• mechanical as opposed to electrically controlled valves

• 80 litre gear versus 110 litre load sensing hydraulic pump

• Premium models fitted with either a 7 inch or 12 inch K-monitor touch screen monitor

Suspended front axles and cab suspension standard with Hydac air cab suspension an option.

Key options include a front linkage and pto, extra worklights, twin amber beacons, front weight packs, power beyond hydraulics and GPS guidance.

Unclip the radiator pack and look at the condition of all the cooling fins. Do not expect the radiators to concertina out, a mounting bracket restricting the opening for just enough access with cleaning an air-line. A release tool is needed to unlock the bonnet. Check one comes with the tractor (inset).

Modern exhaust gas emission systems get incredibly hot, particularly during the cleaning process used to burn of ‘soot’ in the particulate filter. Take your time looking this area of the engine over, with any evidence of exhaust gas leaks needing to be investigated. Although the turbo will receive oil for a period after engine shut down, it is best to let a hard worked engine idle for a minute or two before shutting down. This can help prevent premature wear in the turbo’s bearings. Kubota engines have a good reputation for longevity but they do like clean oil every 500hours.

Once you start to look at younger late gen 2 and lightly used ex-demo gen 3 tractors you will find you need to pick up the ‘phone and ask advertisers for a price. What you pay will be influenced by any trade-in you may have, so mention this when making any initial enquiries. There is strong demand for used tractors.

SUMMARY

This is easy. Kubota M7 tractors are well engineered tractors that can deliver solid performance as a used buy. These models have no major problems and are well put together. If there is a downside it is that many users expect these tractors to do what Kubota models are well-known for; to keep going with little in the way of TLC. Dealers suggest a number of M7 tractors that come in for a service often need to spend a lot of time in the wash bay before they are worked on. Cosmetic wounds are also not uncommon, the rear fenders seeming to be susceptible to damage. What the M7 appears not to mind, however, is hard work. Tractors that are worked hard tend to be less liable to suffer problems with the engine emission control system, a point to note if you are looking at a loader equipped M7 for powerful

The air conditioning compressor may look tiny but it does its job. Check the condition of its drive belt and ensure it is not running slack. This accelerates wear. The cooling fan should turn on a cold engine. Problems in this area are not common.

Kubota personnel from Japan initially made up around 20% of the original workforce at the Dunkirk tractor assembly plant, the company having a further six plants in Europe to exclude its Kverneland equipment arm. If you visit the factory, you will be able to see M7 tractors being assembled from aerial viewing platforms. Booth in the rear of the picture is the final inspection bay.

All models powered by a turbo 6.1-litre four-cylinder engine with SCR emission controls. Compliant to Stage 4. Standard factory warranty 2 years / 2,000hours, 5 years / 5,000 hours as a cost option.

2019: Stage 4b compliant M7132, M7152 and M7172. Detail changes to include reduced in-cab noise

2020: Stage V engines. Re-named M7133, M7-153 and M7-173 but same outputs. Upgrades include Express Restart with brake to neutral, Multispeed Steering with selectable reduced turns lock to lock turns and TIM Tractor Implement Management on M7173 KVT. Standard warranty remains but five year option sees an increase to 6,000 hours.

Saturday 4 May saw a fine crowd attend the excellent Hamden Grange farm dispersal sale, Bethersden Road, Smarden. The equipment came from this famous long straw and hay merchant and has been looked after with care, in modern, classic and vintage formats. Lots were to be sold locally and to Wales and other far flung places.

After a number of solid condition, but ‘dusty’ binders from IHC and MasseyHarris, raising £120-£500, the later sold to Etchingham, the good working condition Marshall 54in no. 29869 threshing drum raised only £500. However the reed comber which was expected to make big bucks

especially after the last one we know of sold in Somerset raised over £40,000, yes that is correct! This example in good order was yours at £6,500 +VAT, perhaps times are changing. However it was just up and up after that with the October 1963 Roadless 6/4 Ploughmaster, selling to Wales for £24,500 (no VAT). This was a record price by £7,500 for one of these tractors in this similar style condition. A good buy was the Fordson E27N Perkins P6 (low top gear) at £5,000 +VAT and has gone to

livestock hauliers, the Croft family from East Sussex. The 1992 John Deere 3650 with 10,000 hours looking good for its age raised a very good £19,400, 2000 JD 6610 3,700 hours, £32,000, 2002 JD 6920 with linkage, 7,200 hours, £27,500 and 1996 JD 6810 with linkage with 10,000 hours, £22,400 + VAT on all these lots. As for the 1998 Claas Lexion 450 combine looking so clean with 6m variable header £23,000. All in all an excellent sale for everyone involved.

'DRIVE IT DAY' SALES

Bodle Street Green saw over 342 vehicles of all types book in to this little village in East Sussex on Sunday 21 April for the charity FBHVC 'Drive It Day'.

All were made welcome by Peter Love and his team of helpers. Here were, vintage and classic cars, motor-cycles, commercial vehicles, military, steam cars, road steamers, stationary engines and agricultural displays. The event saw 72 antique tractors take part in the road run. They were joined by some Model T Fords and others who participated in the 17 mile road run around the area. Ages ranged from 1913-1992 led by scout leader Colin Anton.

People came with vehicles to the event from as far afield as Hampshire, Surrey, Sussex, Kent, Essex and the Boroughs of London and were all given a free refreshment and cake voucher for making the effort for coming.

Inside the village hall were some seven model railway layouts and two hard working village hall ladies Maggie and Philippa with Caroline Croft’s famous cherry buns on offer. The Cabin provided breakfast baps and lunch rolls and if you needed a drink then The White Horse was the place just across the road.

With the well known David Vaughan on the PA and the host joining in people knew what was going on all the time. Peter Love said: "He was delighted to stage the event again, but under some stress at the same time with work schedules as they are. But it could not have happened without many friends from all over the place who were here to do something and to keep this tight site free rolling and connected to the road run." Peter gave praise

Rod Seymour’s Case 930 was the star of the Bodle Street Green ‘Drive It Day’ event

It was great to see the Marshall M on the event which took part in the first part of the run

The road run started at 10.40am and returned to BSG at 1.15pm, but various people got lost on the way and returned back to Bodle Street Green. The highlight in the tractors was Rod Seymour’s ‘eyebrow’ 1960 Case 930 diesel in the Sunset livery all in original condition. Various jobs have been carried out on this stunning original tractor that carries the famous Case in-direct injection system with an in-line injector pump which is essentially original. Here was an excellent raft of classic Fords and Massey with a sprinkling of John Deere, IHC and Marshall of course.

Peter also praised the ladies who booked everyone in and sorted the raffle out particularly Wendy and Annette. From the day some £1,700 was raised. Asked if he was set to do another one in 2025, Peter replied: "Yes people looked happy so we will go again God willing, but as always developing the day further. But we could do with more marshals for the road run please."

It actually took place this year after being cancelled last year over ground conditions. The 12th Heritage Transport Show took centre stage on Saturday 6 April when over 7,000 people came through the gates at the Kent County Agricultural Society’s superb showground at Detling, Maidstone, Kent just off the A249. By the time the gates opened at 10am there was a long queue of people wanting to get in. The car parks held up well in the soft ground conditions and no vehicles got stuck.

Exhibition Hall with many practical items that you might need for your restoration including Rye Oils who sold out of 20/50 grade oil in just 20 minutes and were left with tons of gearbox 90 grade and rear axle 140 grade for the rest of the day.

Making its 2024 debut was Russell Watt’s Massey Ferguson 35X industrial which worked for Swanley parish council for decades before being retired some years ago now. The tractor has been restored by Russell over a four year period and like all Russell’s tractors is up to scratch for this former GDSF class winner.

20TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS

As the Ford and Fordson Association was started in Kent some 20 years ago this year by Peter Love, it seemed appropriate to celebrate the formation of the Ford and Fordson Association in his county of birth.

With this in mind, local Kent FFA rep Rodney Gibson wishes to invite all FFA members and friends to the 20th celebrations of the Ford and Fordson Association. This will take place at the Biddenden Tractorfest on 17-18 August, Holden Farm, Sissinghurst Road, Biddenden, Kent TN27 8EZ, where some 15,000 visitors attended the show in 2023.

Biddenden Tractorfest is by far the largest gathering of preserved tractors in the south east these days and will see over 300 tractors attend, say the organisers. There is excellent parking, and camping facilities, and Saturday evening entertainment is provided.

The aim was to bring people together as so many early season ploughing matches and outdoor events have been cancelled owing to rain. The Saturday saw a competitive ploughing match with six classes and 52 entrants and a ‘play’ working field nearby. The draw of working on some good ground and

like-minded company brought tractor owners from as far afield as Cornwall and Surrey. Richard Pocock also enjoyed a great time with his 1938 Fordson Standard N, which he had owned since a 12 year old. Richard Smallwood from Oakhampton, Devon brought his Cockshutt No.6 plough, but did not have a tractor to use, so Richard P provided his Model N. Richard’s friend, Tony

JOHN DEERE TOPS AT EURO

There was a bumper selection of tractors at the latest Euro Auctions’ sale where over 100 machines went under the hammer on 24 April. As ever, their condition varied considerably with almost brand-new machines rubbing shoulders with those that had seen a lengthy working life. Several manufacturers were represented in the sale, with the John Deere name being as expected the most prominent; there were some quality machines on offer that led to some competitive bidding. But as usual, everything sold with no reserves in place.

The first selection came from the JCB stable, where a 2019 Fastrac 4220 went on to sell for £58,000. Further 4220s sold for a similar amount, while slightly older was a 2155 from 2014 that was in equally good condition at £23,500.

There was also a fine line of New Holland tractors in the auction. Here a 2021 NH T7.210 Auto Command was the most expensive when

The judges were also impressed with Gary’s outfit and he won ‘the exhibit the judges would most like to take home.’

it sold for £47,000, while having the benefit of being fitted with a MX U8 loader was a T6020 from 2011 that made £31,500. Other New Hollands also did well, for instance a NH T4.75 with Sigma 4 front loader made £25,500, a T7.200 Auto Command from 2013, £26,000 and a T6.140 Electro Command from 2015 £27,500.

But it was a John Deere tractor that came out on top overall. There was a tremendous line-up on offer, but the top machine was a 6250R from 2020 that was in superb condition and sold for £63,000. It was followed by a 6215R from 2018 that made £55,000 and a 6155R from 2020 that made £54,000, with numerous others coming in between £40,000 - £50,000.

Valtra tractors are holding their prices well these days and were out in force; with a T234 from 2019 getting noticed when it sold for £49,000. That was followed by a N174 that also dated from 2019. It sold for £41,000 while a 2016 Valtra T154 Versu made £36,000 and another N1774 from 2017, £34,500.

represented with some newer and some older machines on offer. Here a 2016 MF 6615 was the stand-out tractor when it sold for £31,000, while a 7614 that dated from 2013 also did well when it made £20,500.

There were a few preserved MFs on offer too, namely a MF 133 making £2,250, a 1955 Ferguson TE-F20 going for £2,500 and a 1962 MF 35 that sold for £4,750.

A 2017 Kubota M7131 that was in excellent condition and sold for £27,500, while in similar condition was a 2022 Zetor P100SS with 291 hours on the clock, £25,500.

And to round things off, a couple of Case tractors with front linkage looked to be good buys. The first was a 2009 Puma 140 4wd that made £21,000, while a Maxxum 125, from the same year found a new home when it sold for £20,000.

This was one of the largest Euro Auctions’ sales for a while and really did have a lot of quality tractors on offer, along with some that were ready for restoration.

INTERNATIONAL DESIGN PRIZE FOR NEXT-GENERATION COMBINE

The bold new look of the next-generation Case IH Axial-Flow combine, set to take the capacity of the Axial-Flow design into a whole new sector and introduce a distinctive new style, has won an internationally-acclaimed prize, taking a Red Dot Design Award for product design. Judged annually, the Red Dot Design Award is one of the world’s largest design competitions, and its label has become established internationally as one of the most sought-after marks of quality for good design.

Core details of the new Case IH AF series Axial-Flow were revealed at Agritechnica 2023, and the new combine recently made its full global debut in North America. It is designed with a renewed focus on helping users to

maximise output per engine hour while minimizing losses and grain damage, retaining the proven Axial-Flow principle of rotary threshing and separation.

Major advances in the new AF include a 775hp engine, an active dynamic cleaning system, 20,000-litre grain tank, 210 litres/ second unloading rate and headers of up to 15m. Users benefit from performanceenhancing technology including AFS Harvest Command, to minimise losses, maximise throughput and protect grain quality, helping experienced users get even more from their combine, and inexperienced ones quickly become proficient operators, to assist in tackling labour challenges.

The new technology is packaged within a fresh Axial-Flow style that introduced a new

look to the range, designed to show that this is a very different class of combine. The design team from Case IH and its parent CNH will receive the Red Dot Design award for the AF at a special ‘Red Dot: Best of the Best’ ceremony, to be held at the Aalto Theater in Essen, Germany, on June 24.

“The receipt of a Red Dot Design Award is a great honor for the design team behind the new Axial Flow,” says David Wilkie, industrial design director at Case IH parent CNH.

“We wanted to create a look that showed this combine is much more than a refresh of existing ideas in terms of internal engineering, and is something really very different. I’m really pleased the Red Dot jury recognised our efforts to create a style that matches the AxialFlow AF’s considerable substance.”

KVERNELAND UK ADDS TWO MORE BUTTERFLY MOWERS

Kverneland Group UK Ltd has extended its range of butterfly mower conditioners for 2024 with the introduction of the 5387MT and 5395MT. These two new models fit between the 5087MT and 53100MT Vario, giving more choice for farmers and contractors. In addition, both models have the ability to be fitted with BX swath groupers.

Based on the 3300 series mower platform, the two new butterfly models achieve fixed cutting widths of 8.75m and 9.5m respectively, using pairs of beds mounted on a linkage-mounted, folding frame. Where the 5387MT uses 3.2m eight-disc beds, the 5395MT uses 3.6m nine-disc beds. Common to both models is the use of round cutting discs, each carrying two ProFit quick-change blades.

Both models feature Kverneland’s proven QuattroLink bed suspension system, which uses a multi-link mechanism that affords 700mm of vertical movement and 30 degrees of transverse

movement. This pull-type suspension enables each bed to react to and negotiate demanding ground conditions – even at high forward speeds. QuattroLink also provides a non-stop safety breakback mechanism across the full working width of the mower bed.

Semi-swing steel tine conditioners are used on both models, and with a range of adjustments for the conditioning plate at both the front and rear of the hood, the two models offer fine-tuning of the conditioning intensity to suit different crop types and conditions.

As non-ISOBUS butterfly mowers, both the 5387MT and 5395MT are supplied with in-cab switch boxes that provide easy set-up, with an extensive range of adjustments that can also be made on-the-move.

Adding the BX belt-type swath grouper to the 5387MT and 5395MT adds yet more flexibility to mowing, as the full cutting width can be placed into a large single swath, with each grouper placing the outer swaths onto the central row.

WHAT’S NEW

EASY TRANSPORTATION

Power tool manufacturer Makita has added a new battery powered wheelbarrow to its extensive LXT outdoor power equipment range. The DCU601 is equipped with an electric lift for even easier loading and unloading.

The DCU601’s electric lift can only be operated on flat ground, where it can elevate from 475mm to 1,020mm in approximately 30 seconds, allowing for the easy transfer of materials to and from vehicles. It has an increased maximum load capacity of 300kg on flat ground (0 – 3 degrees) and 180kg on slopes up to 12 degrees. It has three speed settings of 1.5, 3.5 and 5.0km/h, plus a reverse setting with a speed of 1.0 Km/h.

The machine is powered by two 18V LXT Li-ion batteries, but up to four can be used in series for a longer run time of up to 100 minutes. The machine will automatically switch to the second pair once the first two batteries have depleted.

The DCU601’s rear wheel axle is designed to tilt, to enable the front (driving) wheels to stably touch the ground for reliable driving even on bumpy road surfaces. The guard rails keep materials secure when transported and can be easily lowered below the flat frame by lifting and sliding them, allowing for easy loading and unloading by dragging rather than lifting materials.

Its soft start feature and electric, electromagnetic and hand lever-operated mechanical brakes provide full control over its operation, making the DCU601 incredibly easy to manoeuvre. The wheelbarrow also has a swivel lock feature, providing control over the direction of the machine, as well as its speed. Headlights, taillights, a warning beeper and a level gauge all add up to a safer operation.

CYCLING FARMER AND FORAGER TO COVER 1000 MILES FOR CHARITY

Somerset farmer, Nick Bragg, of Frogmary Green Farm, is embarking on an extraordinary cycling challenge alongside a Krone BiG X forager, to raise awareness and funds for the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution (RABI).

The challenge involves a 1,000-mile route starting at Northumberland County Show on 26 May, travelling south via Suffolk Show on 30 and 31 May, before finishing at the Royal Cornwall Show on 5 June.

Mr Bragg explains the ambitious journey will span multiple counties and stop at several farm shops and Krone dealerships, to gather local community support and raise nationwide awareness of RABI’s vital work.

“In 2019 I cycled 3,000 miles across Canada for the charity, so I was ready for the next challenge. Lots of people have cycled from John O’Groats to Lands End, so I wanted to go one step further by using the forager to symbolise the agricultural community’s strength and resilience,” he said.

“With the support of Krone, we designed the event to engage a wide

audience, beyond the farming community, and hope to collaborate with both farming personalities and celebrities to help garner support.”

The 11-day route has required careful planning to accommodate both cyclists and Mr Bragg’s 3.2m wide Krone BiG X forager, neither of which are allowed on the motorway.

He explained the mapped route consists of multiple hills, totalling an elevation of over 5,000ft, making the journey extremely tough yet inspiring.

“I’m clocking up around 20 hours of fitness training a week to prepare myself for the challenge. I just really hope it’s not still raining by then!” added Mr Bragg.

Also cycling the route for support will be three of Mr Bragg’s farming friends, while a wide range of drivers will take the wheel of the forager.

CLAYDON TO LAUNCH TWO NEW PRODUCTS

Claydon, the European market leader in direct drilling technology with its Opti-Till® crop establishment system, will launch two new products at Cereals 2024 in Hertfordshire on 11 and 12 June. The Claydon Evolution Front Hopper and Claydon Evolution Drill Toolbar will be seen for the first time on the company’s stand.

FRONT HOPPER

With a total capacity of 2750 litres, split 45/55%, the Evolution Front Hopper is pressurised to ensure reliable high-volume material delivery to the rear distribution heads. Twin metering units deliver either mixed or separated seed/fertiliser flows to the rear-mounted drill, a simple airline box

selector diverting the flow of material to the distribution pipes or combining the total output into one pipe. An Isocan terminal controls all front hopper functions and allows variable rate seeding, depending on the task controller and licence key.

Isobus compatible, the Evolution Front Hopper is supplied with small, medium or large diameter interchangeable metering wheels to suit a wide range of seeds and fertilisers. Weighing 730kg, it measures 2,476mm wide, 1,803mm high and 1,619mm long, incorporates two hopper sensors providing ‘low level’ and ‘empty’ warnings, work lights, two road vision cameras, a toolbox and foldable front footstep. Options include 550kg of ballast, plus packer wheels with passive steering and wheel scrapers.

DRILL TOOLBAR

The Evolution Drill Toolbar can be used in conjunction with the Evolution Front Hopper and is available in widths of 3m, 4m, 4.5m, 4.8m, 5m or 6m. The standard specification includes one distribution head with 38mm seed delivery hoses, but a second distribution head can be optioned.

MORE SILOKING FEEDING OPTIONS

A host of updates are available across Kverneland’s Siloking feeder range, including a new range of batterypowered eTrucks, a stepless auger gearbox on trailed models and the ability to run self-propelled diesel models on HVO fuel (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil).

This second generation of Siloking eTruck models now includes capacities from 12-20 cubic metres, and unlike its predecessor, the latest range has been designed from the outset around a robust, high-tech 20 cube model.

The revised design concept is said to make it easier to produce smaller eTruck

models, using the same engineering featured in the range-topping 20 cube machine, rather than upscaling a 12-cube model into larger capacity versions.

With a high-tech approach, the eTruck sheds its former lead-acid battery power in favour of advanced battery technology with lithium ion phosphorous cells, creating a 96-volt battery-electric vehicle (BEV). This advanced BEV technology affords low-noise, zero-emission feeding that can deliver from two to four mixings without recharging, and offer a projected battery life of 3,000-5,000 full charge cycles.

High capacity TrailedLine mixers, which offer twin and triple auger designs,

are available with Variospeed – a stepless gearbox that is said to require less horsepower to drive and needs a lower start-up torque to engage. It is a development that allows larger capacity mixers to be operated without the need for ever more powerful tractors.

Three pre-defined auger speeds can be selected to suit cutting, mixing and emptying, with push-button control available, along with remote activation from the telehandler used for loading. The benefits of Variospeed can include reduced fuel consumption, easier speed changes for enhanced mixing efficiency, plus lower driveline vibration.

MUCH MORE THAN A HARROW

An innovative new grassland harrow, one that has been specifically designed for use on smallholdings and equestrian properties, has been launched by Devonbased Tractek Engineering.

The Scarrow’s combination of springloaded scarifying tines and a conventional chain harrow mat is particularly effective at removing moss and thatch, spreading both loose and compacted manure and mole hills, together with levelling areas of winter poaching and damage. The scarrow can also be used in menages and sand schools to level the surface and remove weeds.

The Scarrow has been awarded UK Registered Design status and is UKCA certified. The machine is 2m wide and is constructed from high grade steel with a fully galvanised finish for a long life. Fitted with a standard category 1 three-point linkage for

use with tractors of 20hp or more, a trailed version for use with ATVs and large lawn tractors is also under development.

A key feature of the Scarrow is the optional seeder/broadcaster unit. Attached to the Scarrow frame using a single bolt, the electrically-powered unit can be used for grassland overseeding, repairing damaged or thin areas of pasture, introducing herbal mixes and establishing wild flower meadows.

Low volume fertiliser application can also be carried out. The broadcaster has a specially developed electronic control that allows the spread width and seed rate to be adjusted to suit different seed types. A stainless steel seed agitator is incorporated into the mechanism to ensure even seed flow.

The Scarrow is priced at £1100+vat, the seeder unit is £300+vat available direct from Tractek.

After working part-time at Saffron Grange Vineyard in north Essex to support himself through college, Dan fell in love with grape growing and wine making.

And because Dan knows that supplying machinery is often only half the story, particularly during harvest, he is quick to stress that the group’s 50-plus mobile technicians, each with their own vehicle, can be on hand to

“Two of the challenges with larger sites are the availability of skilled labour and investing in the right machinery,” he said. “Hands on is fine, but you need an awful lot of hands, and they aren’t easy to find. As a wine producing country, we need to change some of our cultural practices to cut costs while keeping quality high.”
