RUN WITH THE PACK

Hesston large square balers revolutionised straw baling back in the 1980s, the company’s joint venture with AGCO in 1991 seeing the brown Hesston balers joined by red Massey Ferguson liveried models. Since AGCO went on to purchase the entire Hesston hay and forage business in 2000 they became part of Massey Ferguson product range. Here we look at the 2007 to 2013 2100 series and subsequent 2200 series available from 2014.

MASSEY FERGUSON

2190 SINGLE AXLE

There are two initial decisions to consider with these Massey Ferguson large square balers. First and most obvious is bale size (see model table). Second is the choice between the 2100 series, launched in 2007, and their subsequent replacements, the 2200 series launched back in late 2013.

As the balers in both series are broadly similar, choosing between them at the more affordable end is more likely to be governed by prices and availability. It is possible to pay similar money for a late 2100 and early 2200 series if they are in pretty much the same condition. With a few caveats, it follows that a baler’s age is less significant than condition. The core differences between the 2100 and 2200 have been listed separately.

STARTING POINTS

No surprise that the first used buying task is to take in the machine’s general condition.

A baler that is clean, with no dents or scrapes on the body panels, is more likely to be worth looking at further than one presented in scruff y order. If you are looking over a baler from a non-dealer or non-specialist source, tread with care. These balers are, in modern terms, relatively simple but that is emphatically not the same as suggesting you

can drop your used buying guard. There are numerous points of wear and adjustment to consider.

If an auction buy takes your fancy, be extra careful. Demand for sound pre-owned 2100 and 2200 series balers is strong, particularly for the 2170 and 2270/2270XD. These models produce the popular 120cm x 90cm (actually 120cm x 88cm) bales size. It is all too easy to pay over the odds for a baler that needs work to bring up to standard.

The previous generation 100 series, comprising the 185, 186, 187 and 190, are not covered here. That said, these earlier models remain a viable option for those with more modest workloads. The only ‘problem’ is that these balers are now obviously getting old and the investment required

to keep them going needs to be balanced against what they are worth.

Dealers typically no longer take the 100 series balers in as a part exchange, this means you are less likely to find one offered by them as a used buy. If you strike lucky, a dealer prepared 100 series is still unlikely to retail cheaply if prepared for work. As a ‘trade’ buy, 100 series balers may sell for a lot less but then need a lot more to bring up to a working standard. Parts and technical support for these older balers, however, remains decent, a consideration for those looking for a ‘big’ baler for a low annual workload. Back to back, a later 2100 series baler may have a performance advantage of up to 20% over a like for like 100 machine.

CHECK FROM FRONT TO BACK

When assessing a non-prepared buy, the checks needed will be comprehensive and not everything will be covered here. As previously mentioned, it will take a lot of time to do even a half decent inspection and that assumes the person doing the checks knows what to look for. Be honest with yourself when looking the baler over too. The 2100 and 2200 series may be relatively simple ‘mechanical’ balers but it takes experience to spot areas of wear.

2270XD TANDEM AXLE MASSEY FERGUSON

A prepared buy from a trusted source should be brought up to ready-to-go condition but that is not the same as suggesting it will be in tip-top order. With square balers you will get what you pay for so do not expect every chain or bearing to be replaced even if part worn. You need to balance what you pay with the baler’s projected workload. The greater the number of bales you want to produce, the more you will need to invest.

2270 TANDEM AXLE MASSEY FERGUSON

DRAWBAR, PTO AND CLUTCHES

A drawbar hitch with K80 spoon being standard, with other designs, including a Scharmüller, offered as options. Take a look for wear.

How the hitch is set up is absolutely critical and needs to be matched to the tractor working the baler. The pto running angle also needs to be adjusted to match the tractor. Details of how to achieve this and for the drawbar will be outlined in the

The angle of the pto to the fixed IDL drive coupling (right) is critical and needs matching to the tractor to deliver as straight a drive as possible. This is achieved by moving it up or down on the carrier plate. If there is play in the IDL, it is typically cured by fitting a new bearing.

Each of the main drive clutch springs should be 75mm long, even tension around the plates helping to prevent warping. A grease point is located at the tractor end of the driveline, (accessed via a tube on newer models) regular and copious greasing is necessary although excess lube does contaminate the clutch.

operators’ manual. Poor set up of the pto can see accelerated wear in the bearings of the Implement Driveline (IDL) coupling between the pto and main flywheel drive.

If the drawbar is run too low, it can cause all manner of problems from increased power consumption, poor feed into the bale chamber and increased wear. The pto shaft should be checked to ensure it telescopes freely and is greased liberally to ensure it does not bind under load. The pto must also be of

…to never try and access the bale chamber via the rear rollers. A slip can lead to a very nasty accident. A sheet of ply or similar secured over the rolls will prevent you falling between them.

…to invest in a large quantity of EP grease. The bearings in large square balers do not demand a special grease but they do like a lot of it.

… to grab the offer of operator training and, where possible, machine installation (available on machines purchased from Big Bale South for example). Even experienced users of these balers can learn from those who spend their lives working on them.

… to make a note of the set-up tweaks that may need to be made when swapping between different tractors. Adjusting the drawbar and ensuring a straight drive from the pto to the baler is important.

the correct length to match the tractor.

Wear in the driveline to the flywheel is not common but the flywheel clutch needs to be in good condition. The clutch is designed to allow a degree of slip in normal operation, the tensioning springs typically needing to be set to an even length of 75mm. Normal slip will mean the clutch will get warm, as opposed to hot, during normal working. If the clutch has slipped and got hot enough to scorch the paint it should be refurbished.

The 2100 pick-up is driven via the packer crank, the clutch and overrun system seeing an upgrade to the design on the right. This will be fitted to all but the earliest of 2200 series balers. Later design can be retrofitted if necessary.

Clutch contamination with grease is to be expected in service as the driveshaft spigot needs regular attention, with excess grease eventually finding its way to the clutch.

Whilst checking the input clutch, also inspect both the knotter and pick-up drive clutches. Over feeding the baler can have an impact on the life of these clutches, so look again for evidence of hot running. A clutch may have been adjusted to resist slip to cope with baling heavy incoming material too.

Driven from the end of the pick-up, the twin side auger drive chains can survive filthy conditions, but ideally should be regularly oiled, with the longer chain allowed to run with a bit of slack. The set on the pick-up nearside incorporate a speed sensor.

Over the years, the nearside of the pick-up housing has been strengthened. Look for weld repairs and reinforcements. These are fine if done well, later balers from around 2015/16 being less likely to suffer.

The four plunger rollers all run on a pair of tapered roller bearings, a cap covering the grease nipple. It is possible to lever up the plunger arm to check the bearing, the inner race sometimes becoming starved of grease due to operators not pumping in enough lube. All bearings are designed to use standard EP grade grease.

The pick-up cam track and tine arms were a weak spot on earlier 2100 series models, a series of upgrades making problems on later models less common. Check for movement when the tines are tugged hard. Cam track bearings are fitted to both sides of the pick-up. Look for a flat spot on the roller face (above).

A service will pick this up. As an aside, the knotter clutch was upgraded to a heavier duty design for the bulk of 2200 series balers (see pictures). This newer design will retrofit earlier balers.

<< hay crop. A good operator will operate the baler at a speed that is sympathetic to what the machine can achieve. Press on types may try to ‘over stuff’ the pick-up at one extreme and run the baler too fast at the other. This will have an impact upon wear and tear on the pick-up itself.

Back to the drive, the baler’s heavy flywheel, which is even heavier on the 2270XD, needs to be rock solid on its shaft, with fore and aft play taken up by shims. The flywheel is designed to allow it to overrun when drive from the tractor is stopped via a set of ramps and pawls. Over time, these items wear out. Difficult to check.

NOTE: If the pick-up to ground angle is set too steeply, typically due to the drawbar not being set properly, this can lead to blockages. Also remove or disconnect the inspection lamp that may be fitted under the drive cover. The lamp can become hot enough to ignite trapped debris.

IMPORTANT: The flywheel has additional shear bolt protection. The bolt should be renewed ahead of each season. Check the shear bolt holes are not worn, thus causing the bolt to shear too readily.

PICK-UP

With a working width of 2.26m, the pick-up will work hard when consuming a swath from a wide combine table. At the other extreme, the pick-up is not at its best when used to collect a thin swath, such as a light

Key checks include the usual tines, stripper bars and cam track. Early 2100 series models went through a few changes to strengthen the tine bars plus detail changes. Upgraded components are a retrofit to all pick-ups so problems here are now less common.

The pick-up frame was prone to fracturing on the nearside, so repairs on 2100 series models and possibly earlier 2200 balers is not unusual. The rear pivot bearings do wear so check.

DRIVELINE, TIMING AND BEARINGS – GENERAL

There are a number of chains and sprockets in the driveline and all wear over time. The 2200 series balers were fitted with drive chain lubrication as standard, but initially to just the two main chain drives, full auto lube arriving in 2015 (Auto lube was an option on 2100 series balers). Auto lube is good if it is working, but if the oil reservoir is allowed to run dry of the recommended clean engine oil, dirt can get drawn into the system and make it more difficult to

get working again. A good alternative is to manually lubricate the chains with a thick gearbox oil as part of routine maintenance.

The plunger bearings need to be greased liberally and regularly. Both the front and rear plunger bearings need ordinary EP grease, which is obvious, but those that are harder to reach often miss out.

The stuffer chain, which also drives the knotters, needs to be looked over for wear and not be run slack. This chain will have auto lube on 2200 series balers, but extra manual oiling can help prolong its life. Check the timing marks are aligned, using the painted in white dots as a reference.

Grease nipples are fitted to either end of the stuffer shafts. These are easy to get at on the baler’s offside but less so for its opposite number. If a remote greaser tube is fitted to ease access to the more awkward nipple, it has been modified by Big Bale South.

KNOTTERS

The knotters on the 2100 and 2200 are reliable if maintained and kept clean. As a rule, this element of the balers is best inspected by someone who knows what to look for, but there are a few pointers to help you spot something amiss. The first is the build-up of dirt, automatic knotter

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN 2100 AND 2200 SERIES BALERS?

AGCO made a number of detail, rather than significant changes to the 2200 Series at launch in 2013. These included:

• A new Packer Cutter for the 2240 and 2250 models

• Automatic chain lubrication

• A revised (read tougher) OptiForm bale chamber for the 2270XD and 2290

• Bale weighing and AgCommand telemetry options

The 2200 models come with three main specifications:

• Packer. Non-cut option for high capacity baling

• Cutter. Produces bales that are easier to spread or mix in a feed wagon

• Packer Cutter. A compromise between the Packer and Crop Cutter variants offering a degree of cut but with a reduced impact upon capacity and power requirement

lubrication seeing excess oil spread attracting dirt. If routinely cleaned off, dirt build up should not be a problem. If left, excess muck can get into the knotter’s workings and increase wear. Obvious, maybe, but it is surprising how many balers are operated with little care to this vital part of the machine.

There are numerous pivots, springs and string guides within the knotter area, all having an impact upon the formation of a knot. Leave well alone when checking, just inspect for obvious problems.

It is difficult to pick up in a picture, but the knife clearance in the knotters is critical. Arrowed is the correct small gap to the left, with no clearance on the right. The latter can cause the twine to bind and not cut cleanly.

BALE CHAMBER AND PLUNGER

You will need to access the bale chamber to really inspect the plunger, the top and lower plunger edges working to a clearance of between 4mm to 6mm, those to the side 3mm to 5mm. This is not something you can easily check as the clearance could vary dependant upon where the plunger is within the chamber. Similarly, the clearance of the bottom knives will also need checking, the recommend gap ranging between 3mm to 5mm. Before the knives are set, the plunger to chamber clearance will need sorting out first.

A pair of string guides ensure the baling twine remains correctly aligned as it passes through the knotter and these are wear items. Check each pair in the guide, on the underside and at the front of the arm as pictured. If the rolls run tight, give them a spin to see if they free off. If not, the will need to be replaced.

Fully mechanical, the bale length metering arm is tripped via a pawl system that has seen various improvements to its design, with the latest type as pictured a common retrofit.

This type of service work is mentioned not so much as a used buying check but more to emphasise the work you will need to invest to bring a used, non-prepared buy back to good order.

The stuffer feed, incidentally, has adjustable sections that will determine the density of the incoming flakes (slices or wedges if you prefer). This adjustment will be set to suit hay, wetter grass and straw.

GENERAL CHECKS

Please do not be afraid of seeking advice and it is recommended not just to assume that buying privately or at auction is the route to the most cost effective used buy. The more you rely upon a machine, the more its true cost will mount if it lets you down when you need it.

The bale chamber can be fitted with waffle plates/hay dogs at the front, these helping to improve bale density in varied working conditions. If not fitted, the plates are worth installing.

SUMMARY

Buying pre-owned equipment can be far more involved than just selecting a brand-new machine, but the effort involved can really pay off, the more so if it gains you access to high performance equipment that is otherwise beyond your budget. With a large square baler, the choice of US built models comes with the reassurance that these balers are firstly well-proven and secondly built to take the rigours of intensive operation. They are not over complex either.

Our used buying advice is the same as always. Do not make assumptions and be prepared to do some research into the baler you are after. Also don’t be afraid to seek professional advice.

DEVELOPMENT OF THE 2170XD AND 2270XD to its design to overcome a few problems in service. Key among these was to the mechanical bale density control, the bolts securing the hydraulics proving liable to shear. This was resolved by fitting harder Grade 8.0 nuts and bolts, this fix then seeing stress loads transferred back to the crank arms. These, in turn, could break.

The XD, Extra Density, variants of the 2170 and 2270 balers produce a higher density, heavier bale. In broad outline this is achieved by lengthening the bale chamber to allow greater pressure to be exerted upon the bale as it forms, with a larger flywheel delivering the extra inertia needed to drive the plunger. This also impacts upon the power required from the tractor up front, the recommended minimum power increasing from 127hp for the standard 2170/2270 to 150hp for the XD variant.

Following a redesign, the problem with the crank arms was resolved, although a few operators still encountered problems with the hydraulic density cylinders failing. A

change in supplier resolved this.

Balers that suffered would have been repaired under warranty but even though the system was upgraded on the 2170XD, operators can still override the system and cause problems. A look at the controller error codes will typically list the number of alerts sent to reduce the pressure on the system.

Modified 2170XD and the 2250XD are now less likely to suffer problems. From 2019, the 2270XD was fitted with larger density cylinders.

Single 700/50 R22.5 tyres are favoured for a light in-field footprint and good baler manoeuvrability but are restricted to 40km/hr. Tandem axles run 500/40 R22.5 tyres as standard with wider 620/40 R22.5 tyres as option (right). Tandem axles are favoured for smoother running in the field and on the road and have passive rear wheel steering to help with manoeuvrability. It is possible to swap between axle types, a point to consider if you own an existing baler on the axle you prefer, but the job should be done with a crane as a hoist, not a forklift or telehandler!

WHAT ABOUT THE CONTROLLERS?

All 2100 and 2200 balers can be controlled via a tractors ISOBus control system. In practice, most operators suggest the GTA Console 1 supplied with the 2100 series or later C1000 Bale Monitor supplied on the 2200 is easier to use and their preference. If your used buy is supplied without an AGCO controller, ensure the baler will ‘patch’ into the tractor’s ISOBUS system. Although most will, make no assumptions.

As you would expect, there are telemetry options on offer with these balers, to include AgCommand. Working through the CANBUS system, AgCommand can record a myriad of operator and usage date. If a used buy has the system fitted, it will provide a wealth of information relating to the balers past usage and service care.

Automatic knotter lubrication is standard on all models and it is important to use the correct 85W140 oil. If the reservoir is allowed to run dry, the lube system will need to be purged of air. Offered as an option on the 2100 and as standard on the 2200 series, the chain auto lube system is pretty simple but it does need clean engine oil to work. An empty reservoir, with dirt inside, is not a good sign. As an aside, some prefer to manually lubricate the chains with a liberal application of gearbox oil.

Massey Ferguson 2100 and 2200 series balers are built to use as many common parts across all variants as possible. The exception is for the heavy-duty XD models, these featuring a bigger flywheel and a longer bale chamber. The bale density hydraulics on the earliest XD models could fail, revisions to the design seeing it considerably beefed up. This should ensure it is no longer a problem area.

For some business operations, such as a high-volume contract operator, hiring over three years can make more sense than buying due to tax breaks (talk to your accountant). For others, you will need to bale in excess of 4,000 bales a season before hiring is viable.

If you choose to hire, you do have the option of buying the hired machine at the end of the hire period. The baler will be fully serviced, and you will buy the machine you have used and got used to. The company will take 60% of the hire cost off the sale price of the baler. Good if you want to try before you buy.

CLEAN JOHN DEERES

On Wednesday 3 April at Muswell Leys Farm, Willey, Rugby, Warwickshire, Cheffins carried out a 551 lot sale in wet conditions. It featured a John Deere fleet of 10 tractors.

Also in the sale were two MFs and a 2019 JCB 419S loading shovel with 4,229 hours and rust in the front area, which sold for £59,000. The JCB 2004 3CX Sitemaster backhoe loader did well at £26,500. There were also four green combines in very clean order with the 2009 C670 Hillmaster with 25ft 625P header raising £32,500. The earlier 2008 C670i, £36,500 with Zurn

Premium Flow 625P header, all had similar hours of an average 3,400. A 2017 JD 8400i four-wheel drive forage harvester with 639 grass header and autoguide got to £98,000 on the day.

The top priced green tractor was the 2021 John Deere 6155R AutoPowr Command Pro Ultimate with 3,282 hours, £80,500. It went down to £5,000 for the two-wheel drive 1991 Deere 2650 with 10,963 hours in good working order and a two-wheel drive 1986 2140 X-E D992WWP making similar money and some left in those last two lots as the tractors were very clean.

GOOD START IN IRELAND

The top tractor to sell in the H J Pugh Galway sale was the Northern Ireland entered 1966 135 at £10,704

Even though they did not sell everything –especially the new second hand tractors –H J Pugh were pleased with their first sale in the country at Michael Hogan’s premises in County Galway in wet and soggy conditions.

Things to sell included the Steyr 180 at £6,851. The Turner Yeoman of England needing attention made similar money. The highlight was the Northern Ireland entered 1966 Massey Ferguson 135 in older restored order grade

Another of note is the UK registered Ford 7000 and hard to find Q cabbed 6600. There are two Leyland 270s and a Marshall 302 which again are all clean examples. If you are looking for an engine there are over 30 to go for here including: Cat C6-6, Ford 7710, 4600, 4610, 6600, 7610, 6610, 6810, 8210 and 2703E. There is also a raft of Perkins engines to go for with over 200 original tractor parts alongside wheels, tyres and various modern implements.

CLASSIC MASSEY MAKES £41,500 +VAT

As we predicted the Pete Marquis collection disposal sale turned out to be the big one in March.

Arguably the northern sale of the year so far took place at Preston, Lancashire on 23 March when 90 lots went under the hammer. Cheffins oversaw a superb array of classic tractors that had been gathered over the years. Many looked to be in original condition, while others had been restored to a very high standard and bought in, which tempted the bidders who were guided through the various lots by Oliver Godfrey.

Bidding was brisk and competitive throughout, both from the large crowd in attendance and those using the internet, resulting with some high prices being achieved in the showery and cold conditions.

The highlight was the 1985 MF 2725 Electronic four-wheel drive with 2,782 hours and it came up for sale mid-way through the Massey selection. This tractor certainly turned a few heads, with bids coming in thick and fast, with the 2725 eventually selling for a massive record of £41,500, making it the most expensive tractor in the auction all in a workmanlike grade 3.

To round things off from a Massey Ferguson perspective, a 2680 from 1983 went on to sell for £16,000 while also getting a lot of interest was a rather rough MF 1505 artic from 1977 at £14,500.

The Case-IH tractors did well with a 4240 Pro two-wheel drive from 1998 making £15,500 and a 1996 5120 Maxxum Powershift selling for £17,000.

MF PLASTIC BANNER MAKES OVER £3,300

It was difficult keeping up with sales on Saturday 23 March when at least four tractor sales were taking place in the UK and Ireland. In Presteigne, Powys McCartney’s were staging the W J Taylor and Sons retirement sale. These people were former MF dealers especially in the 100-200 series era and had kept all information, records and so much more in their stores.

It all came under the hammer with the plastic MF banner which you would perhaps attach to the side of a building being the highlight, it sold after extensive bidding for £3,300 in mint condition. The two 100 series update manuals sold for £600 and £500 respectively and other parts also sold well, but not all the lots were sold on Marteye unfortunately.

BVJ285 which has been exhibited at Tractor World in the past, in good, grade 4.7 running condition, sold for just £21,500. As for the original Ferguson Brown A pulley, it saw ten bidders go for it with a remarkable £750 paid.

Next on was the good looking and well restored 1949 Massey-Harris 744 no.211 which the auctioneer kept calling a 774 and it sold for £3,500 with some good wheels and interesting rear weights and looked in

BEST NATIONAL IN YEARS

The 2024 National Vintage Tractor Road Run start venue on Sunday 31 March Easter Day was Plumpton Agricultural College near Lewes, East Sussex, a superb modern facility.

Some 260 tractors had entered but by the time the event got going, it was nearly 300, with entrants coming from as far afield as Cornwall and Scotland, 572 miles away in some cases.

The make-up included 123 tractors from East Sussex, 26 from West Sussex, 24 from Kent and 15 from Surrey. Many others came from, Berkshire, Bristol, Cumbria, Derbyshire, Hampshire, Herefordshire, Lancashire, Leicestershire, Oxfordshire, Rutland, Shropshire, Somerset, Staffordshire and Warwickshire.

The predominant make was Massey Ferguson and Ferguson with 82 followed by Fordson and Ford 71 with IHC next at 22.

During the Saturday evening event staff from the 2024 chosen charity, Chailey Heritage Foundation and its Patchwork Farm gave an insight into their work. The Foundation is one

of the leading centres in the UK for young people with complex neurodisabilities who mostly have cerebral palsy. Many have visual impairment and dual-sensory impairments and very few communicate verbally.

Run leader Cameron Kemp lined up with his 1961 Nuffield Universal 3 UPN51 with Winsam cab. There was to be a tremendous seven mile section off-road across the top of the South Downs, circling the historic town of Lewes, its castle and more.

Some were anxious to get away and as the flag came down at 10am one drove into the tractor in front, owing to a sticking clutch. However, they turned right onto the B2116 and within a mile they were off road climbing into the South Downs passing Streathill Farm and climbing as high as possible as the dark clouds turned to sunshine.

Some of the original route could not be undertaken as the ground was just too wet, so the tractors had to come down off the Downs spectacularly on to a flint road covered in mud. It turned out to be like glass and some slid

The half-way stop for the tractors was at Northease Farm where just some of the tractors

down the road with one jack knifing along the way, you certainly needed low gear all the way.

Back up on the Downs the views were tremendous as one looked down to where the tractors were parked for the halfway refreshment and toilets stop just off Whiteway Lane. Some didn’t stop as they had been delayed by as much as two hours and carried on down the lane. The tractors continued into Lewes – the main road through the town having been closed off for the tractors with huge crowds enjoying them, including the TV cameras.

In the later half, tractors were stopped at the ex LBSC railway level crossing at Cooksbridge for the trains to pass. A short distance further on, they turned right on this well marshalled and signed event as they headed for home towards Plumpton College, with a good crowd watching all the way. It had certainly been a great day for the chosen charity and for all involved something they will never forget.

TWO MORE BUTTERFLY MOWERS ADDED TO RANGE

Kverneland Group UK Ltd has extended its range of butterfly mower conditioners for 2024 with the introduction of the 5387MT and 5395MT. These two new models fit between the 5087MT and 53100MT Vario, giving more choice for farmers and contractors. In addition, both models have the ability to be fitted with BX swath groupers.

Based on the 3300 series mower platform, the two new butterfly models achieve fixed cutting widths of 8.75m and 9.5m respectively, using pairs of beds mounted on a linkage mounted, folding frame. Where the 5387MT uses 3.2m eight-disc beds, the 5395MT uses 3.6m nine-disc beds. Common to both models is the use of round cutting discs, each carrying two ProFit quick-change blades.

Both models feature Kverneland’s proven QuattroLink bed suspension system, which uses a multi-link mechanism that affords 700mm of vertical movement and 30 degrees of transverse movement. This pull-type suspension enables each bed to react to and negotiate demanding ground conditions – even at high forward speeds. QuattroLink also provides a non-stop safety break-back mechanism across the full working width of the mower bed.

Semi-swing steel tine conditioners are used on both models, and with a range of adjustments for the conditioning plate at both the front and rear of the hood, the two models offer fine-tuning of the conditioning intensity to suit different crop types and conditions.

As non-ISOBUS butterfly mowers, both

the 5387MT and 5395MT are supplied with in-cab switch boxes that provide easy set-up, with an extensive range of adjustments that can also be made on-the-move.

Adding the BX belt-type swath grouper to the 5387MT and 5395MT adds yet more flexibility to mowing, as the full cutting width can be placed into a large single swath, with each grouper placing the outer swaths onto the central row.

Raising the BX swath groupers out of work allows three individual swaths to be left – and these can also be spread out across the full working width using the butterfly mower’s integral, wide spreading hoods.

Prices start at £55,767 for the 5387MT, with the BX swath grouper version priced from £72,318.

FLEXIBILITY MEETS PRECISION

As a specialist in arable farming machinery, Pöttinger is always up to speed with optimising production methods in agriculture. The mechanical crop care range includes the Flexcare row crop cultivator that offers full flexibility working in a variety of crops. Flexcare can now be equipped with the Profiline comfort control system as an option. The Profiline comfort control system is available on all machines with up to 16 rows.

PROFILINE COMFORT CONTROL SYSTEM

With the Profiline comfort control system machines can be operated directly either using an ISOBUS tractor terminal or other compatible control terminals. Each function is carried out immediately by pressing a button or the touchscreen.

The hydraulic oil supply is regulated by a load sensing system. This means that only the power that is actually needed is requested from the tractor hydraulics. This saves energy and increases the productivity of the tractor.

MAXIMUM CONVENIENCE

Each hoe element has a double-acting hydraulic cylinder so the hoe can be raised by tapping on the display, or controlled automatically by GPS signals at the headland and in field corners. This means less fatigue for the driver, who can focus on the working results of the row crop cultivator.

PROFILINE COMFORT CONTROL SYSTEM WITH SECTION CONTROL

The optional Profiline comfort control system on the Flexcare can lift all the hoes at the same time at the end of the field, and allows each hoe element to be controlled individually if the field tapers into a corner. The weeding tools are raised and lowered with pinpoint accuracy using ISOBUS. This happens automatically when crossing the crop lanes. Ultimately, this system protects the crop, especially in wedge-shaped corners, overlaps and along field boundaries.

CRIMINAL GANGS TARGETING POPULAR PICK-UPS

NFU Mutual and the police are urging farmers and other owners of pick-up trucks to take action to safeguard their vehicles against sophisticated thieves.

Both the leading rural insurer and the National Rural Crime Unit (NRCU) have seen an increase in the thefts of pick-ups from farms and rural locations around the UK, with newer models targeted by sophisticated criminals who compromise keyless entrance systems.

Together they are advising owners to adopt a combination of traditional and technological security measures in order to safeguard their vehicles from criminal gangs.

Police and NFU Mutual experts working on recovery have recovered Hi-Lux trucks which have been shipped abroad by criminal gangs and have seen a rise in pick-up theft in general in 2024.

Hannah Binns, Rural Affairs Specialist at NFU Mutual, said: “Pick-ups are prized by farmers and the rural community for their practicality and hardiness, but sadly this makes them a repeat target for thieves. NFU Mutual has seen an increase in the theft of these vehicles so we’re urging owners to take action to protect their vehicles.

“We work with the National Rural Crime Unit to help track down thieves and trace stolen vehicles, returning them to their owners where possible.

“Prevention is key and we’d urge owners to keep their vehicles locked at all times when not in use and park in well-lit areas which are overlooked.

“Farmers can fit an accredited alarm for security and a tracking device to locate the vehicle if stolen.

“Also consider etching the vehicle identification number on windows, marking any component parts with forensic marking solutions, and photographing any unusual

features, modifications, damage or repairs to help aid identification if stolen.

“We’d also urge farmers not to share information on social media which could indicate where their vehicle is kept.”

NFU Mutual has also partnered with Scorpion Track to offer customers discounts of over 50% on sophisticated tracking and antitheft devices for their vehicles.

DC Chris Piggott of the National Construction and Agri Thefts Team, which sits within the National Rural Crime Unit of the police, said Toyota Hi-Lux are being targeted by thieves: “We have seen a large number of Toyota Hi-Lux stolen by organised criminal gangs. Most of them are less than five years old and they are being electronically compromised without any need to access the vehicle keys.

“It is therefore worth doing all you can to fortify your vehicle, using a combination of measures such as immobilisers and tracking devices as well as traditional methods like pedal and steering wheel locks to deter or hinder thieves. If you’re able to do so, it’s worth keeping the vehicle in a garage when not in use.

NEW SLURRY STORES

Slurry and digestate management specialist Tramspread has introduced a new range of temporary slurry stores. These are quick to install and consist of a steel tank with a durable Landflex Elvaloy lining suitable for slurry.

The new Butek Tank stores are manufactured in Britain by Butyl Products Ltd with capacities of 280m³, 500 m³, 800m³, 1100m³ and 1250m³. The steel is treated with Magnelis, a metallic zing coating said to last three times as long as standard galvanised steel, and then powder coated for a durable maintenance-free finish. Tanks can be supplied in any RAL colour, although dark green is standard, and have a 10-year warranty (coastal area exclusions apply) with a longer anticipated lifespan than galvanised steel tanks.

As standard, tanks are equipped with a single 6” through-the-wall filling/emptying port, but they can be specified with as many ports as required, including 5” up and over the wall types. Multiple ports allow an umbilical slurry application system to operate, simultaneously drawing-out slurry whilst recirculating back into the tank.

Installation is straightforward, without any need to pour a concrete

base. Instead, the tank uses a compacted earth base covered with a Geotech membrane and a ring of concrete slabs which are supplied as part of the package along with drawings and installation advice.

To minimise odour and emissions the tanks can be covered with either a floating Hexa-Cover or a fixed cover. The slurry or digestate can be mixed using a hydraulically-driven mixer positioned over the side or agitated using a pump.

THE COMPACT CHOICE FOR QUICK, CLEAN CUTTING

Makita has added two new pruning products to its ever growing outdoor product range. Powered by Makita’s 18V LXT battery system, the new DUP180 Brushless Pruning Shear and the DUC150 150mm Pruning Saw offer a comfortable and powerful solution to make quick and light work of repetitive or heavy pruning jobs.

further minimise user fatigue, Makita has engineered the tool so that the control of the shear blade is interlocked with the trigger, meaning the blades will only open and close depending on the degree the trigger is depressed or released.

Additionally, an external oil port is designed for easy blade lubrication without disassembly, enhancing the tool's durability.

Joining the outdoor line up is the DUC150 18V 150mm Pruning Saw. Operating with a chain speed of 8m/s, this compact machine offers excellent cutting performance despite its lightweight design, making it ideal for general applications or orchard maintenance.

Additional comfort and efficiency-enhancing features include tool-less chain tensioning and automatic chain oiling, while a brushless motor

ensures low maintenance requirements and a longer working motor life.

The DUC150 is available as a kit with a BL1850B Battery and DC18RC charger, or as a standalone tool body only.

Additionally, a button on the lever eliminates the need for manual clutching when shifting between groups. Thanks to the EcoShift feature, the 5M tractor reduces RPM to save fuel while delivering sufficient power to accomplish transport tasks efficiently at up to 40 km/h. The integration of AutoTracTM in the

dashboard – a feature that 6M Series owners enjoy in the Corner Post Display – enhances precision and efficiency by minimising overlaps during field and grassland work. The guidance system helps to stay on track in straight-line field jobs. An upgrade to more sophisticated guidance functionalities with a G5 Universal Display is possible at any time.

With a compact 4.1m turning radius, the John Deere 5M series provides great

manoeuvrability, making it well-suited for tasks such as yard work and animal feeding in confined spaces. The low hood and the large roof window offer operators excellent visibility, especially for front loader tasks. The new 5M series comes with the predictive analysis functionality Expert Alerts, enabling early recognition of required maintenance needs, which further enhances operational reliability and minimises unexpected downtime.

HARVEST ASSIST APP WITH EVEN MORE FUNCTIONS

Harvest Assist, Pöttinger's innovative app for optimising forage harvesting, is constantly being expanded. It now features three new functions for optimising the deployment of harvest machines to further boost harvesting performance. Available for iOS and Android, every member of the harvest convoy can install the app on their smartphone for free. The new functions are available starting April 2024.

In the Harvest Assist app, you can select any of the machines in your harvest fleet: You can choose from mowers, tedders, rakes, mergers, loader wagons and round balers. The app makes it easy to add fields and assign them to each of the machines. It gives everyone involved a real-time overview of progress in the field and the current status of each machine. The compaction vehicle at the clamp has time to neatly distribute and compact each load of crop one by one.

THE NEW FUNCTIONS

Number of bales in the field: In the app, the baler driver can enter the number of bales deposited in each field. The drivers of the loaders and bale collection vehicles can see at a glance how many bales need to be fetched.

If there are several bale collection teams, each driver knows immediately which fields they still need to visit and how many bales have already been removed. The number of bales also provides an indication of the harvesting performance. This enables you to keep track of the grass and whole crop harvest at any time.

Navigating to the clamp: In addition to providing navigation to the field, the

navigation function also shows the route back to the clamp. A new clamp can be added and navigated to directly using Google Maps. This latest feature in the Harvest Assist app avoids detours and means you no longer need to send locations.

New "Other machines" category: Now you can add bale collection machinery and forage harvesters. This gives every driver in the harvest fleet an even better overview of where each machine is deployed.

Navigating, planning, and a clear overview of every machine in the fleet, regardless of make, are all provided by the Harvest Assist app.

SPORTSMAN 570 X2

The Sportsman X2 570 is fitted with an industry-exclusive 181kg dump box with a quick-latching feature for easy release.
