SAME BASIC DESIGN, SIGNIFICANT DETAIL DIFFERENCE

Krone launched its first KW tedder models over 25 years ago, the basic design DNA of these mounted units having been carried over to the current Vendro series. If you are after a used buy, an early model of equivalent width could, on paper, do much the same job as a factory fresh example. Subtle KW design and build tweaks, however, suggest a KW decal does not tell the full story.

Comment: Trade-in and private sale early KW tedder models can make a decent light-duty buy, with popular 7.70m ‘three mower row’ models selling from £4,000 if in good working order. Expect wear in pivots, rotor bearings and tines.

Price point: From £3,000 (trade sale) to £4,250

Although not strictly accurate, Krone KW tractor mounted tedders broadly split into 1997 to 2007 and 2008 and on models that were replaced by the current Vendro series from 2021. In terms of basic ability all KW models will do much the same job with the caveat that Krone beefed up the build strength of 2008 models. Part of this was driven by more powerful tractors being used to operate the tedders and users working them a lot harder.

The model table concentrates upon the 2008 to 2021 generation as these are more likely to make a viable used buy. The basic specs include the factory’s recommended minimum power input for these KW units. This is more of a reminder that a tedder is not a power-hungry piece of kit. This is not to say one cannot be operated by a tractor of substantially higher power. It is not unusual to see a tractor developing north of 200hp hooked up to a nominal 8.00m working width tedder. if it is the only tractor available then that is what will get used. The problem is some will have ‘overworked’ the tedder and pre-2008 models may be more prone to wear as a result.

Comment: Eight-rotor and six tine arm KW 8.82m tedder with spare rotor wheels and desirable hydraulic stabilisers. Lightly used KW tedders are a rare used find, mounted models often being retained to allow ease of access to small fields.

Price point: £8,250 to £10,000

Krone KW mounted tedders were first made in the mid-90s, detail developments, such as to the pivoting headstock, being made to cater for use with higher powered tractors. Pre-2007/08 models have tube ‘U’ section design with fixed top link pin holes and slotted head to accommodate movement (inset).

Obviously, you need to consider working width. Krone prints a table in the rear of its sales literature that will help establish the suitability of a given model to match the widths of different mowing set ups.

Comment: Eight rotor 8.90m Vendro 900. A discount to £16K could have secured one in 2022, limited availability possibly hardening both new and used prices.

Price point: List £21,500

A side point is the size of rotor and the related number of tine arms. As a used buyer, you will obviously be restricted to what is available, but for the main the key stat is working width. The popular ‘second generation’ 7.82m KW7.82 /6x7 will spread

Redesigned headstock from 2007/08 is stronger. Note spare rotor wheels, larger 18x8.50-8 tyre for the inner two rotors, the narrower 16x6.50-8 for the outer units. In storage, the inner tyres carry the weight of the tedder so check they are not deformed. This is a common problem on units stored for extended periods on tyres with a low inflation pressure.

Comment: Four rotor 4.70m Vendro 470. Smaller working width tedders have a lessened but still significant demand, with equivalent used KW 4.62 selling from £2,800, new old stock models from £7,800.

Price point: List £8,750

three 3.0m mown rows in a pass. The model number indicates the working width, the second element indicating rotor and tine arm numbers.

Nominal three by 3.00m rows will also be handled by the previous generation KW7.70 /6x7 but such a tedder is likely to have lead a hard life, well-used examples selling from around £3,500 privately and at auction. Such a machine worked by an ‘enthusiastically’ driven 150hp tractor will be asking a lot of a tedder of this vintage. Do the same with a late KW 7.82 6x7 in good order, and you are more likely to be onto a winner. Late KW7.82 tedders retail from between £7,500 to £8,500. Expect a tedder at this sort of money to be in good order.

If you compare the build and driveline between first and second generation KW tedders it is clear Krone made significant changes to the design. In brief these include:

• Stronger ‘A’ frame headstock

• OctoLink eight-finger drive in place of UJs

• Stronger main frame with larger pivots with greaseable pins

• Revised liquid grease immersed rotor bearings

• Stronger rotor tine arms

• Strengthened rotor guards

WHAT DOES 8X6, 8X7 OR ANY OTHER NUMBER BY NUMBER MEAN?

There are four rotor sizes offered by Krone on its KW series tedders, these enabling a tedder to be specified for lighter to heavier crops and to suit working at a range of forward speeds. As a general outline guide, the smallest 1.34m rotor with five tine arms will suit lighter crops or work heavier crops at a slower forward speed, the largest rotor of 1.70m suiting heavier crops and faster working (A larger 1.80m option is only offered on KW 5.52 trailed models).

Three rotor sizes , 1.34m,1.53m and 1.70, with 5, 6 or 7 arms repectively, may be fitted to KW tedders, with a larger 1.80m 7-arm varient offered on the trailed KWT. The same rotors are fitted to current Vendro models.

Changes Krone has made to the new Vendro series are listed separately, these later units also offering a slight increase in working width per pro-rata model.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR

Used equipment scarcity can mean it is tempting to buy something before looking it over. If you are not buying from a trusted source, be aware that there will be some good looking but well-worn tedders on offer. Key checks are simple enough but a proper inspection can take a couple of hours and, ideally, should include inspecting the tedder both when parked up and attached to a tractor and opened up ready for work.

Working back, start with the pto shaft, looking for damage and poor guards. A bent pto is not common but still check it runs true. Wear in the UJs will be a concern on older or heavily worked first generation KW models. The headstock on all variants is not a problem area but look for repairs and fractures. Check the pivot points are not worn.

If the main gearbox has been treated to fresh oil once a season it should be in good order, but still check for weeps from the shaft seals. It can be difficult to check for

backlash, but it is worth having a look, a second person working a near rotor back and forth helping you pick up play. If you spot obvious wear, seek advice.

Most KW tedders will have stabilisers with renewable plastic damper collars. These wear items are easily overlooked and, when worn, will allow the tedders to

pivot too freely in work. Cheap and easy to renew, it is worth investing in a spare set. The bump stops tend not to wear out but can age harden so it may be worth renewing them at the same time. Rust on the sliding sections of stored tedders is worth cleaning off as it will cause wear on the plastic damper collars.

The main chassis and related pivots are tougher on post 2007 KW models but even earlier examples tend not to have problems unless the tedder has hit something in work and been damaged. You can only check for this with the unit unfolded. This will also allow the rotor to be checked. In early models with UJ drive, check for backlash between the rotors, any obvious play needing to be investigated. The rotor bearings of this generation of KW are different to the later 2008 generation and are not as easy to renew if worn. If a rotor has play in the bearings, seek advice as the cost of a repair can be more costly than you would think. If a ‘cheap’ tedder has clear bearing wear in a couple of rotors, the chances are it is not worth considering.

The rotor guard system has various links and pivots, these non-load bearing items not being a problem if the guards are not bent. If there is some damage, do not dismiss as this may interfere with how the tedder folds. If KW tedders have a weak point, it is the guards as they do get damaged but are often not repaired or renewed. They do need to be in good order. If the guards are missing, don’t buy the tedder. Simple.

The tedder tines are obviously wear items, with the best way of determining if they are worn and need renewing being to compare old with new. It follows that the handed tines are best renewed as a complete set, so cost this in when considering a used buy. Also consider the cost of tine breakages, renewing old tines proving a good idea when preparing a crop for a forage harvester. A complete set of tines, with new fasteners, will set you back around £1,750 in parts on a KW 7.82 6x7.

The rotors each run on wheels, the tyres of outer units typically lasting well but still look for age-hardened rubber and sidewall fractures. The inner two tyres carry the weight of the tedder when it is folded, so ensure the sidewalls are in good order and that the tyres have not got a flat bottom that is common on units coming out of storage. Vendro tedders have an extra central stand to take the weight of the tyres to get around the latter.

A simple plastic friction damper controls the lateral sway, with an internal spring helping to ensure the unit runs square in work. Easy and cheap to replace, the plastic friction brackets are wear items. The damper section will rust if exposed (left) so check if the unit is swayed to conceal the rod (right).

Requiring a periodic shot of grease, the UJs on pre-2007/8 KW tedders are long lived if looked after. It is easy to pick up play in the joints when turning the rotors by hand. Note simple bolted pivot with no grease points and simple bolt adjustment for the arm angle in work.

From 2008, Krone switched to its OctoLink eight finger drive system. Maintenance free, the drive should be trouble free.

The pivot points on OctoLink models are stronger and have a grease point, with the same design carried over to the current Vendro models.

Anti-wrap covers are fitted to all the rotors. The bearings run in liquid grease that should last the life of the machine. Hard worked tedders will see bearing wear, so check for play or any tight spots when turning a rotor by hand. Pre2007/8 models have a different type of rotor bearing that is harder to renew when worn.

With regards to other checks, check all adjustments, ensuring the various settings can be moved and have not seized. Although this sort of kit is best stored under cover, a unit surplus to requirements may have been left outside and forgotten for a while, so check.

SUMMARY

KW mounted tedders are simple bits of kit, sound early models making a tempting buy if well-priced. Pro-rata, however, the best models to go for are the later 2008 and onwards models, these benefitting from a

more robust overall build that is more likely to suit heavy work behind a more powerful tractor.

Although new kit prices have spiralled over the past couple of years, cost in a new Vedro when considering a used KW buy. The latest Vendro models have a few design upgrades, and you can of course invest in a machine that will match your specific needs. Be realistic on delivery though. Current lead times could mean you have a long wait for one to arrive.

All KW tedders will have conventional ‘bulb’ lights. The lens seals can let in water, so check for moisture damage.

WHAT’S USED

KW models with a black registration plate may not show the date of manufacture but will show the model type. Note repair to rotor guard support, fractures in this area being quite common on early machines although all can suffer accident damage.

Handed tines are painted yellow or green to avoid mixing them up. The Tine sweep angle is adjustable, via the eccentric mounting plate, with a choice of three settings to suit heavy to light crops.

Tines on mounted KW tedders are straight, the new curved Opti-Turn design used on current Vendro models not being offered as a retrofit.

The tedding angle can be altered via a simple pin and hole system on each rotor. The number of holes can vary, but typically the adjustment range will be between 13° and 19°.

KRONE VENDRO CHANGES IN PICTURES

Curved Opti-Turn tines are standard across all Vendro models. Krone does not offer these as a retrofit to replace worn tines on KW tedders, despite the mounts looking the same.

Dampers incorporated into the outer wing sections of ten-rotor models help tame bounce at higher speeds behind powerful tractors. The outer section rams tilt the outside rotors up when the tedder is raised to help prevent them contacting the ground in a turn.

Hard to spot in the picture, but this Vendro 900 has KW103-24 listed as its model type. Although Krone has updated its tedders, the basic design has altered little over nearly 30 years.

Revised rotor guards and a shorter headstock to mainframe clearance are noticeable changes between KW and Vendro models. Bringing the weight of the tedder forward reduces the weight on the rear of the tractor, a point to note if using a lower powered tractor on a wide tedder but clearance to the cab can be tight when the tedder is raised. Hydraulic stabilisers dampen sway in work, the friction dampers used on KW models remaining a standard fit on eight-rotor models and below.

Rear drop-down park stand keeps the central tyres off the ground, reducing the problem of these tyres developing a storage flat spot.

BIGGEST FORD SALE OF THE YEAR

Set to take place on Saturday 18

May the Johnson Bros sale will be staged by Cheffins near Evesham, Worcestershire. It will certainly be the biggest amount of Ford 5000s and Fordson E1A Majors ever offered in one hit in preservation times at least. In fact there will be over 25 of each type up for grabs at this fascinating farm where the three brothers and staff ’s ingenuity made them so successful over the years.

The bothers have been on this site for at least 60 years and today only one of them is still surviving. At one time they bought all these E1As and 5000s because they were going to continue producing Doe type duel tractors and I am quite serious about that. A number of turntables are about on the site and will be offered in the sale we are told.

The 5000s include Pre and Force examples and in these lots are a number of Select-O-Speeds. Also here are three 7000s and a host of other 1000s series and an E1A Shawnee-Pull.

You will also find in the sale three original

Does and others, including the two ex Claas of Saxham E1A Majors that started off as one Doe. However they were converted back into fourwheelers and still show the green paint of their user of many years on them. Also here is what is said to be the oldest Doe in existence.

It was also interesting to see the half a Doe 130 that was sold at the H J Pugh 6 October 2012 sale at Hook Norton in excellent order. It is said there was a family dispute and to settle things the tractor was split in two. In fact a visitor to the Evesham site in February was the actual person who carried out the cutting of the tractors many decades ago now.

I have just touched the edge of the iceberg here as there is so much more to go for and it will be a fascinating sale conducted by Oliver Godfrey. In fact the brothers only bought two tractors new when they were in full operation. However they went on to leave the Ford-Fordson mould and moved over to John Deere’s as their main power, now that’s a fascinating story in itself.

No matter what this is going to be a historic sale of some significance and is something you are not likely see again for many years, do make a date in the diary and go along for this live and online Cheffins sale.

MB-TRAC’S TO STAR SALES

Things are all set for Cheffins first Vintage Collective of the year at Sutton, Cambridge, 19-20 April. The stars will be the many MB-Trac’s entered in the sale, which have been coming out of the woodwork following the good prices achieved in 2023 and many continental buyers are very interested in this make. Another star is undoubtedly going to be the original Italian Fordson Dexta crawler conversion. The last one sold in the UK during 2022 ended up in Devon and eventually shipped to New York state, USA in early 2023. They are certainly a very desirable collectors tractor and well worth adding to your collection. Also in the sale is a well restored Jubilee Ford

7810 III the prices on these tractors are still going up. In similar condition is a County 1164 which has been gone right through and there is also a stunning restored Ford Force 3000.

I also notice there is a fine 6640 SLE fourwheel drive in the sale a type that is gaining popularity particularly as the 40 series were really the last genuine designed Basildon Ford tractor before the company became New Holland. The Massey Ferguson entry is good and there are some interesting late John Deere’s.

The literature and parts certainly have plenty to go for that’s for sure and the implement section looks good. If you have never been to this sale before come early it’s an experience you will never forget.

TIM INGLES SALE

It all happened at last after the Ingles sale was cancelled twice before. The Tim Ingles sale finally took place on Wednesday 22 February. Tim Ingles, who sadly passed away, was known as the greatest exponent of dinosaur power in the UK when he imported many artic tractors from North America in the 1990-2000s. The sale took place at Blenham Farm, Moreton-In-Marsh in wet monsoon conditions.

The clear-up sale featured a number of his favourite dinosaurs and the results were: 2011 Caterpillar Challenger MT765C, 8,857 hours £40,000; 2000 Caterpillar Challenger 85E crawler 7,942 hours £32,500; Fendt Xylon 524 tool carrier with transmission problems £19,000; 1993 Ford Versatile 946 8,060 hours £29,000; 1986 Steiger Puma 180 £24,000 and 1978 Versatile 145 restored £5,000 grade 4.7 the rest were grade 10. The farms main tractor a 1991 John Deere 4255 4WD with 10,072 hours, grade 10 sold for a good £27,000.

2001 JOHN DEERE 8410 SELLS FOR £92,500!

Yes you did read the headline correctly as at the first of the two Johnson brothers sales which the first was staged on-line that finished on 23 February a world record created. This was for the 2001 8410 Powershift Y311KUK with 3,137 hours at a remarkable £92,500 + 3.5 commission and VAT on that.

Asked why the 21 year old tractor made so much it was the fact it is simple to maintain and has the power to get the job done and will go up in value not down as modern tractors do.

The other results were: 2000 John Deere 6910 PowerQuad with 50k box and

11,146 hours, £32,000; 1997 John Deere 6900 PowerQuad 7,317 hours £23,500; 1995 John Deere 6600 PowerQuad 7,317 hours £18,000; 1992 John Deere 3650 Power Synchron £17,000; 1983 John Deere 3040 Power

Synchron 3,830 hours; 1982 John Deere 4440 7416 hours and rear weights £12,000 and lastly a hard to find 2003 John Deere 3800 loader with 5428 hours, £31,500. All in all excellent prices.

MASSEY CLASSICS DO WELL

There was a wonderful atmosphere at the Cheffins Cambridge Machinery Sale on Monday 12 February. The weather was crisp, but the sun was out from the outset and lifted ones spirits in this well organised sale. There were buyers from all over the world taking part on line and in person, which was good to see. The tractors now go through from left to right with the new centre building all together which works much better certainly from an organisational point of view.

The sale was typical of many collectives at the moment which are very much up and

down with some good highs, but others not finding buyers in places as so much is expected of the lot, but this is the place that certainly levels things out in the end.

The one we liked early on was the refurbished 1980 Massey Ferguson 240 SFW937W with 6,500 hours and power steering and sold for £9,500 grade 10. A more genuine clean tractor was the 1990 Massey Ferguson 362 two-wheel drive that was sold to Northern Ireland for £9,600. A clean and together 1975 Massey Ferguson 135 with cab and Irish log book sold for £7,800 grade 9.6. A 1988 Massey Ferguson 390 F73BEP 2WD was yours for £11,500 and so it went on.

A 1992 Ford 8240 SLE, 4WD K191LUB sold here for £8,500 and a clean Italian 8210 4WD import with Super Q cab £8,800. Then came a 1990 Ford 7910 III 4WD with 9,840 hours, got away at £8,500. A no reserve TW-15 was just a total rust heap which had even got the roof, sold for £3,200. A County 1124 with late panels and working modifications in good condition though, was got away at £5,000. There were a line of good potential John Deere classics in two 2040S and an exciting 3130 which failed to make their reserves unfortunately but the 1991 John Deere 1188 S11 combine with 818 header, J508DJS did at £10,800.

Massey Ferguson 3645 Dynashift in clean condition got to £8,700 on the day

After horrendous rain which lead to the cancellation of the three-day Race Retro at Stoneleigh, Warwickshire, Tractor World at the Three Counties Showground Malvern on 24-25 February came through with flying colours even though the caravan and car parking had to be rethought over the soft ground.

Despite these problems a record crowd of over 10,000 people was seen here from all parts of the UK, Ireland and mainland Europe. The show was held in a wonderful atmosphere which also saw records broken in the H J Pugh sale where 82 percent of all tractors were sold.

It was not an easy situation for organiser Mark Woodward and the Kelsey Media team to place everything on hard standing not helped by the new exciting exhibition hall area being unavailable. One has to say its 90% finished and looks fine and will be used in the show set up next year.

The weather was reasonably warm for this time of year and after the mist had burnt off the sun appeared on occasions. The gates opened at 9am as the crowds flocked in to see the many exhibits on display, trade stands the most you will see together this year dedicated to the subject of tractors and associated machinery. Then there was the H J Pugh sale which people walked down to the 1200 lots in the sale. There was plenty to go for here with three record prices set by the end of the day.

There were over 700 tractors to enjoy, 100+ trade stands and so much more. In the Severn Hall was the Ferguson Club and Friends of Ferguson Heritage joint stand with both clubs looking after their members well. Agwoods fitter Ant Bradford brought his Weeks of Maidstone 1938 Ferguson Brown A hopgarden conversion GKO509 the number plate on the tractor is as large as the radiator header tank. It went on to take the most original 1900-48 class. Showing the other spectrum was Somerset based Chris Stuckey’s 1996 Massey Ferguson 399 which won the 1976-2000 Original class award taking it

from Geoff Ashcroft’s Ford 8630 another South West entered tractor.

Two other family winners were Jon Plowright’s 1960 Ferguson FE-35 and plough made up with a dummy furrow looking the part and took the 1949-64 Original class which it thoroughly deserved. As for the 1965-75 Restored class that went to the familiar McDonald family’s 135 that has held up very well with its fertilizer spreader on the back all the way from Aberdeenshire.

Back in the larger Avon Halls was a fine John Deere display the largest seen at any indoor show for some years. A late entry here was Northern Ireland’s Malcolm Cook junior’s restored John Deere 3650 Power Synchron four-wheel drive. The tractor took the 1976-2000 Restored class and later went on to take the Show Champion award.

Despite the economic pressures there are today Tractor World was a great success and very International at that with not only the exhibits, but also with visitors from all across Europe here to enjoy the show to the full.

As for the sale well that saw HJ Pugh sell a rather rusty Ferguson TE-T industrial with a later non industrial axle fitted. It was suggested to be ex Kent County Council; however I remember the tractor being used at the BP depot at Cranbrook railway station and have pictures to prove it somewhere. Remarkably some £16,000 was paid for it and has now gone to Ireland. FRONT LOADER WITH INTEGRATED SELF-LEVELLING LINKAGE

Claas has launched a new generation of highly innovative front loaders with significantly improved comfort and performance features to replace the previous FL C series with integrated mechanical self-levelling linkage.

The six new models from FL 40 C to FL 140 cover lift capacities from 940kg to 2,490kg (measured 80cm in front of the bucket pivot point) and a breakaway force from 1,820kg to 3,120kg. Maximum lift heights at the bucket pivot point range from 3.5m to 4.5m.

The new loaders feature a new, innovative three-section design, which perfectly

complements the design of the Claas tractors. The double-angled boom shifts the pivot point mechanism of the parallelogram downwards by more than 20cm. This gives the operator an even better view of the frame and attachment, especially as the front crossbeam has been lowered by 10cm.

The new design features the customary robustness and manufacturing quality that is a hallmark of Claas front loaders. The boom is also designed for the most demanding tasks. All hydraulic hoses are integrated into the frame for protection.

PROVEN COMFORT FEATURES RETAINED

The familiar Fitlock coupling system from the FL and FL C front loaders has been retained: the locking mechanism is fully automatic and entirely mechanical. To unlock, simply release a small lever on the boom. With the Mach multi-coupling system, all hydraulic and electrical lines can be connected to the tractor in an instant –

without the need for any additional plug connections. This system makes the job of attaching the front loader fast and safe.

With the optional hydraulic Fastlock system, attachments can be locked at the press of a button from the comfort of the cab, in addition to automatic mechanical locking. Third and fourth functions can be connected via the Mach 2 multi-coupler, which features leak-free, flat-seal couplings. A pressure relief function for the third function is available on request.

The automatic bucket return function automatically returns the bucket to the horizontal loading position – increasing operator comfort and productivity to boot.

Optional LED work lights illuminate the loading area perfectly in the dark. The new design and features transform the Axos and Arion into even more productive loading machines.

TRAMSPREAD WELCOMES NEW FETF GRANTS

The recently announced Farming Equipment and Technology Fund (FETF) 2024 grant scheme, which promotes improved slurry management, is welcomed by slurry specialist Tramspread. Eligible products from the company’s range include dribble bar and trailing shoe applicators, hose reels and drag hose, slurry separators, flowmeters, mobile slurry chopper pumps and remote-control systems for enginedriven pumps.

Significant funding is available for slurry separators which are a useful management tool, as Tramspread director Terry Baker explained: “Removing solids from slurry makes in-store management easier, especially if the slurry store is covered. This provides increased application output from both tankers and umbilical systems. Less friction in umbilical hoses allows for longer pumping distances and reduces wear on the pump, hose and applicator, and saves fuel too. The more uniform product aids even flow from applicators giving an accurate application to the crop.”

Tramspread is the sole UK importer of highquality Stallkamp slurry separators made in Germany and keeps a range of parts for these machines in-stock.

“FETF grants are available for mobile separators for the first time, and there are two Stallkamp options,” pointed out John

Tydeman of Tramspread. “The PSS mobile unit is built around a PSS 5.5-550 separator with two rotary lobe pumps, one to fill the feed hopper and one to pump away the separated liquid. The second option uses a PSG 5.5-600 separator and two progressive cavity pumps. Both have a throughput of 15 to 20m3/hr and can be either free-standing or trailermounted. Funding is also available for fixed separators, and Tramspread also supplies pumps, gantries and control panels to suit individual system requirements.”

Tramspread offers two remote control systems for engine-driven pumps: the SIL Vision IV radio control and Teletram 2020 GSM remote control. These offer full engine protection, flow meter connection, fuel level sensing, inlet and outlet pressure and air compressor control. Options include a nurse tank level sensor and pneumatic sponge launcher. Tramspread high-spec pto driven pumps also qualify for funding under the new scheme.

The latest Horsch Leeb PT and VT selfpropelled sprayers feature an all-new cab that offers significantly higher levels of operator comfort. Following the announcement of the arrival of the all-new Ranger XP Kinetic, Polaris has now announced that the first shipments of the Ultimate trim model have started, with both the Premium and Ultimate models now available.

Ranger XP Kinetic is available as a three-seat model in Premium and Ultimate trim. SENSORS ENABLE ACCURATE CROP MANAGEMENT

Vegetable, fruit and arable producers can now more accurately irrigate, manage and protect their crops thanks to two new environment monitoring sensors from Sencrop.

Water stress is an increasing concern due to the changing climate, and the new Soilcrop sensor takes real-time measurements of soil moisture and temperature at depths of up 60cm. This enables producers to trigger irrigation at the right time, based on existing and forecast conditions, and turn it off when soil moisture reaches the required level. In addition, it can be used to identify the most suitable time for other weather-dependent field work, including sowing and fertiliser application.

“Soilcrop takes measurements every 15 minutes at depths of 10cm, 20cm, 40cm and 60cm, giving an accurate picture of soil

moisture content and temperature throughout the profile,” said Mark Herriman at Sencrop. “And if used in conjunction with Raincrop, a sensor that measures rain, temperature and air humidity, the app can show in a userfriendly graph the forecast soil moisture, using real-time data and forecasts. Producers can therefore be even more precise when it comes to crop management decisions.”

For fruit producers, frost is a particular challenge, so the new Thermocrop sensor offers an entry-level monitor to help predict frost damage up to four days in advance. It measures both air temperature and humidity every five minutes, and is integrated with Sencrop’s other weather management

software to create predefined or personalised frost alerts within the app.

“Accurately anticipating the risk of frost is essential if you are to trigger your frost control measures at the right time, thereby protecting your crops while keeping costs to a minimum,” said Mr Herriman.

Thermocrop is a low-budget alternative to its big brother Leafcrop, which was launched in 2019. Whereas Leafcrop is a connected sensor placed on the plant itself to obtain accurate temperature, humidity and moisture measurements, Thermocrop is placed in the middle of the field for more general measurement. Its price point enables all farmers to make use of this precision technology.

Optimising the Future of Tillage

TRACTOR-MOUNTED ORCHARD SENSORS ELIGIBLE FOR SIZEABLE FETF GRANT

Apple growers intending to adopt tractormounted camera technology to bring a new level of precision to their orchard management could save 60% of the cost thanks to a new Farming Equipment and Technology Fund grant.

Following representations from Agrovista Precision and Aurea Imaging, government funding has been secured that covers any make of tractor-mounted, high-resolution sensor system, plus an in-cab terminal that provides on-board, real-time processing of data that can be uploaded to a computer or the cloud.

Pricing is based around Aurea Imaging’s TMS TreeScout, which could see growers net £12,900 towards the cost of the equipment.

Agrovista Precision manager Graeme Barrett said: “This funding offers a great opportunity for orchard managers to take a big step forward in precision management.

“TreeScout, Aurea’s tractor-mounted sensor that was launched in the UK last summer, is owned and operated by growers and replaces

drones as the primary source of information gathering.

“It provides a quick, reliable and economical method of collecting and analysing data, such as blossom density and tree vigour, to help growers pinpoint inputs to maximise production of first-class fruit.

“We are delighted that our efforts to obtain a grant have paid off, particularly at a time when interest in precision orchard management is growing quickly.”

Agrovista Fruit agronomist Tom Johnson said the funding helps open the door to significant economic gains.

“Managing each tree as an individual helps to create a more homogenous orchard. In collaboration with their agronomists, growers can more accurately match inputs to need using GPS-guided variable rates, producing a more uniform fruit set and improving quality and yield consistency.”

The potential economic benefits from using TreeScout are considerable. Work on precision

thinning by Aurea Imaging in the Netherlands showed a typical yield uplift of 6t/ha, worth over £2,600/ha.

“With funding now available, the potential return on investment is even more impressive,” said Tom. “It could be the catalyst for a large increase in precision operations in UK apple orchards this season.”

Agrovista head of fruit Mark Davies added: “There is much activity in this precision orchard space at the moment for very good reason.

“But with Aurea, Agrovista Fruit has found a partner that has already completed the development work, with a ready-for-market solution to help growers optimise their orchard performance on a tree-by-tree basis, now.”

The first application window is now open and runs until 11 April. Two more application windows are expected in 2024.

Funding will be allocated starting with the highest scoring applications until it is fully allocated. This will set the minimum threshold for the application window.

FARM EXPO 2024 REVIEW

MORE THAN 100 EXHIBITORS

Exhibition visitors who dread the thought of being ‘pounced on’ while walking, eyes averted, past the stands at such events had little to fear at this year’s Farm Expo, held at the Kent Event Centre at Detling, Kent.

For the most part, the sales teams at the increasingly popular show were so busy chatting animatedly to visitors that there was little time to pounce on the unwary. The busy and bustling atmosphere paid tribute to a well-timed, well organised show with a range of exhibitors showing off everything from gardening gloves to high-end tractors.

With the weather always a challenge in early March, this year’s show was cool but at least dry, and while many exhibitors took the opportunity of an indoor pitch, there was still plenty to see on the outside areas, including a popular Demo Zone offering live demonstrations of some of the impressive kit on offer.

In its fifth year, the 2024 show featured more than 100 exhibitors showcasing farm machinery, goods and services from both the biggest national and international suppliers and smaller, specialist outfits.

The atmosphere was positive, the chatter friendly and the feedback from both those manning the stands and those who were out to see what was new in the farming world highlighted the need for an early season farming show.

“We had an amazing day at Farm Expo. With so much going on in British farming it was a much appreciated opportunity to discuss current issues with so many clients and contacts,” said Leo Hickish, chairman of rural consultancy Batcheller Monkhouse, one of a number of professional service providers at the show.

They were joined by banks, insurers, solicitors and representatives from

organisations such as the Rural Payments Agency, UK Power Networks, the British Association for Shooting and Conservation, Kent Young Farmers and Mid Kent College, as well as charities such as the Farming Community Network and the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution.

It was inevitably, though, the impressive machinery on display that attracted the most attention, with the Claas Axion 960 Terra Trac on the Claas Manns stand just one of the agricultural behemoths catching the eye of passers-by.

Most of the big names were there, with displays from, amongst others, Bell Agricultural, Lister Wilder, FGS Agri, Crawfords, Ernest Doe & Sons, Haynes Agricultural, Tuckwells, Krone and Rhino Plant Hire.

Rhino boss Neil Morgan was one of many exhibitors to praise this year’s show, having attended for four of the past five years. “This

year has been a good show,” he said, “with plenty of people showing lots of interest in what’s on offer. I think there are more people here and we have also seen quite a few new faces.”

Neil said the timing of Farm Expo was good for his business as the team was usually too busy to attend any of the ploughing matches later in the year. “It’s great to be able to talk to customers and see what’s new,” he commented.

It was the first visit to Farm Expo for exhibitors Yeames Solar, and sales executive Duncan Randall was impressed with the number of visitors and the level of interest expressed.

“I think it’s been a fantastic show,” he commented. “We’ve seen a really good mix of people and they have been happy to chat about the potential of installing solar PV and about the new grant opportunities on offer. Yeames specialises in solar on farms and farmland and we’ve been very impressed with the level of interest.”

It was far from the first time for regular exhibitors N P Seymour, and as usual there was something special on offer from the hands-on tractor and machinery dealership.

The stand featured a bespoke tool carrier built in N P Seymour’s own Cranbrook, Kent, workshop by engineer Mark Maynard from a design by Nick Seymour.

The front-mounted carrier frame, which avoids the need for the usual ‘ mast’ that can obscure the operator’s view, can be fitted with various mechanical weeding implements from manufacturers including Braun and Clemens and can be single- or double-sided and hydraulically or manually adjustable.

Visitors such as Simon King, taking a day away from working at Chapel Down Vineyard to “see what’s out there”, were impressed with the show. “It’s always good to see what new machinery and ideas are on offer,” he said, adding that he had been looking at smaller tractors and telehandlers. “It’s been a worthwhile day out,” he commented.

On the Invicta Insurance Services stand, Adrian Best, Tigi Singhateh and Angus Campbell agreed that the show had been a success, giving them the chance to catch up with existing clients and chat to potential new ones.

“There’s been a good mix of people here, it seems busier than ever, and it’s given us a chance to catch up with what other

businesses are offering as well as meeting people on our own stand,” said operations director Adrian.

As with all self-respecting exhibitions these days, Farm Expo featured two interesting and well-attended seminars. The first, hosted by headline sponsor Brachers, was on rural crime and featured Kent Police’s Rural Task Force, while the afternoon saw solar specialists BeBa Energy outline the company’s BeSmarter energy monitoring scheme.

QUALITY SALES AND REPAIR SERVICE

When Mark Brown decided it was time to set up his own business, he had in mind “a one man in a van, going around fixing people’s machinery” kind of future.

Twenty or so years later, at the helm of ground care machinery specialists M&A Brown & Sons Ltd and responsible for five vehicles, 11 people and a permanent base at Iden Green Farm, just outside Goudhurst, he joked: “I grew a monster.”

It may have grown beyond his expectations, but the company’s reputation has grown with it, to the point where M&A Brown & Sons’ name is well known throughout Kent, Sussex and into South East London for the quality of its sales and repair service.

The business has both commercial and domestic customers and prides itself on the level of service it delivers in both

categories. Mark’s wife Amanda, who has played an integral part in the growth of the business, explained: “Everybody counts. It doesn’t matter if it’s a commercial operator looking for half a dozen ride-on mowers or a home-owner asking about an entry level strimmer, they both get all the help they need.”

M&A Brown & Sons stocks a comprehensive, carefully selected range of ground care machinery, from leaf blowers, strimmers and pedestrian mowers through to ride-ons, impressive zero-turn mowers and compact tractors, complete with the implements that make them useful.

“We only sell quality brands like Ariens, AS Motor, Wiebang, Echo and Hayter because we know they are the best and will give great results over an impressively long period,” explained Amanda. “It would

be easy to over-stock, but we would just be adding quantity over quality, and we are happy that we already sell the right brands for our customer base.”

That customer base includes farmers, smallholders, estates, councils and individuals who value good service, advice and the knowledge that M&A Brown & Sons will be able to look after the machine long after the paintwork has dulled and the first scuffs have appeared.

As a sub-contractor, M&A Brown & Sons also supplies, maintains and repairs ground care machinery used on rail routes and at major airports. Meanwhile companies such as Forst, which supplies chippers, and Ariens are now using Mark and his team as a service centre, which means they can look after equipment that is still under warranty but was bought elsewhere.

MACHINERY DEALER

The team at what is very much a family firm takes a flexible approach to the workload, but in general Mark handles the commercial enquiries while Bob Shelley looks after domestic customers.

Mark trained as an agricultural engineer, working for a number of big name machinery dealers in the South East before moving into ground care because he felt it was “a niche that suited his skills and experience”.

He joined Glendale Managed Services in Lewisham, South East London, as a workshop manager in around 2000, just a year or so after he and Amanda were married. Glendale provides ground care services for operations such as councils and hospitals, and while Mark enjoyed the work and being part of the team at Glendale, he found the daily journey from High Halden in the Weald of Kent a challenge.

“He decided he wanted to be one man in a van,” Amanda revealed, “but it snowballed a bit. One van became two and then three. We then took on a workshop so that we could do more repairs and then expanded into selling new machinery. It’s been a steady growth supported by a great team.”

Fortunately for Mark, while he now spends much of his time running the business alongside Amanda, he still gets the chance to get his hands dirty, particularly when engineers are sick. “Some of the guys were off with ‘flu’ last week and so Mark was back on the tools and loved every minute of it,” Amanda revealed.

After moving from a van-based operation to a permanent base in

2004, M&A Brown & Sons moved to their current location on the Cranbrook Road at Goudhurst two years later, initially in half of one building but now in three buildings on the site.

Alongside a spacious workshop, they have an office, a parts store and a well laid-out showroom and forecourt which has displays of Echo, Toro, Al-Ko and Branson/TYM equipment alongside the brands mentioned earlier.

“Ideally we would like to buy premises rather than rent, but whenever we come across some potential farm buildings locally we find that they are on sale with planning permission to be turned into homes,” Mark commented. “You can see why, but it makes it difficult for this kind of business to find a suitable rural location to operate from.”

Another recent purchase which sets M&A Brown & Sons apart is a cylinder sharpening bench that means the company can put a new edge on commercial cylinder mower cutting units. “It’s not a cheap bit of kit so few people offer the service these days. We invested in the bench because our customers appreciate the fact that we can keep their mowers in top condition,” Amanda explained.

Although he has built up his own impressive customer base over the years, Mark is still making the journey to Lewisham, as M&A Brown & Sons now acts as a sub-contractor to Glendale Managed Services, supplying and maintaining the company’s equipment.

The business became a limited company in 2012, although the

decision had to be put on hold for a few months while the couple awaited the arrival of their second child. They had one boy, Theo, but needed to make sure Zach was, as expected, a boy, before adding the “& Sons” to the company name.

Theo, who now works for a local farmer after completing an agricultural course at Hadlow College, was 15 during the coronavirus lockdown. “He finished all the work set online by his school in the morning and then spent the afternoons working alongside his dad in the workshop,” Amanda recalled.

Younger brother Zach, now 12, spends all his free time at Iden Green Farm cleaning machinery and doing all sorts of other jobs around the site to earn extra pocket money. There’s no pressure on either of the boys to join the family business, but both have inherited their father’s love of machinery and it looks like a distinct possibility.

If they also inherit mum’s focus on customer service, the business will be in safe hands long into the future. “We know most of our customers by name, many of them often pop in just for a chat and the kettle is always on. I also have a reputation for insisting that everyone who answers the phone talks with a smile on their face,” she said.

Customer service is backed up by well-honed skills, lots of training and a wealth of experience throughout the team, plus a realistic approach to the cost of repairing equipment.

“If we think the likely repair costs on a comparatively inexpensive piece of machinery will turn it into an expensive piece of machinery, we tell the customer it’s not worth repairing,” said Mark, who is also well known in farming circles as a Weald of Kent Young Farmers’ Club leader.

It’s an honest approach from a family business that began with a search for independence and has grown into a well-respected local employer with a reputation for service that is second to none.

The range offered in the UK by the US based outdoor power equipment manufacturer Ariens focuses on ride-on zero turn mowers.

The zero turn mowers have a commercial focus throughout the range, from the entry level Ariens Edge through the Zenith range of commercial petrol powered zero turn models, including the recently introduced battery powered Zenith E and Arrow E ranges.

Offers. Designed by Engels of the Netherlands for harvesting asparagus but could do other crops. Designed for asparagus beds it's twin 12v leisure batteries will last up to 10 hours in dry conditons, less when wet. Foot pedal starts and gives infinitely variable speed. Steering by green knob on front of seat but in rows it tends to self steer especially in beds when the small guide wheels touch the bed. Batteries not included as they need replacing. I have a number of these, some newer than others. You could even use the drive mechanism for something else. Very expensive when new but any sensible offer accepted.
