USED UMBILICAL KIT IS RARE, SO IS A MIX OF USED AND NEW A GOOD IDEA?
Umbilical slurry and digestate handling systems offer the potential for a lighter footprint on the land, enhanced nutrient monitoring, reduced odours and emissions during spreading plus the system can provide easier access to challenging terrain. The potential for high outputs further contributes to the systems popularity. But how do you proceed if you want to set up a system with used equipment?
BAUER MAGNUM SX1000 PTO-DRIVEN PUMP TRAMSPREAD

Condition: Used unknown
Comment: Suitable for larger umbilical systems, a Bauer Magnum SX1000 pump system will need an input of around 150hp. Increasingly seen as a back-up by intensive users, so demand for good used examples remains strong. A pump that cannot be inspected will make a risky used buy, but sound worn examples can still fetch around £2,500. Rebuild costs from around £2,500 to £4,000, a new Bauer pump will cost £6,950.

BAUER MAGNUM SM540 PTO-DRIVEN PUMP TRAMSPREAD

Comment: Entry level Bauer Magnum SM540 with primer. Pump can be driven by an 85hp tractor and is best suited to installations with short hose runs. Used examples are not at all common, but there’s a possibility of one appearing in a farm sale in unknown condition.

Starting at the field end of the hose first, dribble bars remain the most widely used applicator for umbilical systems in the UK and Ireland due to their simplicity, ability to handle undulating terrain and durability. For those on a limited budget it is all too easy to look at the used applicator end but to not think through to how that applicator is supplied with liquid. If you expect to be able to set up an umbilical slurry or digestate handling system from scratch, using just used equipment, you may run into problems. The pool of viable used kit may not be as extensive as you might think.
Here we focus on equipment supplied by Suffolk-based Tramspread. The company manufactures and supplies parts and services for slurry and digestate management equipment, with extensive experience with umbilical systems. A sister company offers a contracting service across East Anglia and beyond, running a large number of Tramspread umbilical systems.
This does not necessarily mean you can simply contact Tramspread and gain instant access to a variety of suitable used pumps and applicators. Umbilical slurry application remains a specialised sector and there are fewer systems in use when compared to tankers. Furthermore, there are numerous other factors to consider, including the type of pump best suited to the job, length and type of hose needed, alternative applicator options and the type of storage system and material being worked with. Obtaining reliable used equipment can be challenging, the more so

If you are seeking to build a complete system from scratch it would be sensible to seek expert assistance which should include an appraisal of your existing slurry storage system. If on the other hand you only need a pump, spare hose reel, or an applicator to integrate into an existing system, the process is obviously a lot simpler. Either way, contacting a specialist can save you considerable time and potentially money.
Hose swinging arms, which allow a U-turn to be carried out in the field, take a tremendous amount of load in work, particularly with extended pipe runs. Refurbishment work in this area is not unusual.

What follows is a basic outline of the core elements needed for an umbilical system. There are, of course, alternative makes and models of equipment available and you can of course mix and match kit to produce your own bespoke system. Just ensure you check for compatibility.
The pivot points on these fully galvanised Tramspread applicators can last for the life of the machine if greased and the machine is given a good clean when not in service. Note repairs in this area, all down to a lack of user care.
HOSE SPOOL WITH 1,000M HOSE TRAMSPREAD
Year: 2024
Condition: Full season of contract use. Sound but shows wear.
Comment: Tramspread reel with Gollmer & Hummel Hilcoflex PU 5in hose and Storz couplings. Used hose from a contractor working over non-stoney ground can make a good buy for farm use. If possible, ask to see hose inflated to check for damage.
Price point: Completely condition dependent. Used hoses base prices are calculated working on half of new price. Average condition, more, below, less.
PUMPS – PTO-DRIVEN
A PTO-driven pump is the simplest option, with used Tramspread pumps remaining similar to the company’s existing range. These can be specified with a Bauer or Doda chopping pump. The Bauer options consist of a Magnum SM540 or Magnum SX1000, the former having a lower capacity to suit smaller systems although, in practical terms, the Magnum SX1000 will be a more versatile buy as it will operate with longer umbilical hose runs. Both incorporate a chopper on the suction side and should be able to handle solids to include straw, fibrous material, store crust or sludge at levels of up to 12%.
The larger pump system has a minimum power requirement of 150hp and would have been supplied with a hydraulic primer as standard. SX1000 based Tramspread pumps will typically have a six-inch inlet and a four-inch outlet with gate valve and compressor coupling.
The Doda-based option has a slightly highly capacity but with that comes a greater power requirement, with 155hp at the very least advised.
The pumps are all mounted on a galvanised three-point linkage frame with a heavy-duty pto shaft. The smaller SM540 pump is the ideal choice for a transfer pump but it is also suited to running ‘smaller’ umbilical systems but one will be a rare used find. With regards to performance, the Bauer SX1000 is able to:
• Handle up to 12% solids
• Pump up to 300m3/hour
• Manometric head* of up to 140m
• High cutting performance

1000M HOSE REELER

Condition: Full season of contract use, very good condition
Comment: Tramspread hose reelers are rare on the used market. Twin hydraulic motor drive models (1000m and 1400m) more desirable with the power to handle reeling-in longer lengths of hose.

12M SUFFOLK DRIBBLE BAR. SINGLE MACERATOR TRAMSPREAD

Comment: Single macerator dribble bar. Whilst trailing shoe applicators suit certain users, the low running costs of dribble bars and good contour following on uneven ground mean demand for dribble bars remains strong. Refurbished 12.0m units from £10-12K.

£12,000. From £28,000 new.
*Manometric Head is the total pressure difference, or head, generated by a pump and is measured in meters of water column. A Manometric Head rating of 140m indicates the maximum height or pressure a pump can achieve when pumping water or other liquids. An SX1000 pump should, in simple terms, cope with significant gradients in the umbilical hose run.
ENGINE DRIVEN PUMP UNITS (EDPU)
EDPU Engine driven pumps have numerous significant benefits over pto-driven pumps, including a significant saving in labour, machinery and depreciation, freeing up a costly tractor, as well as typically using 35% less fuel. Tramspread suggest an EDPU represents the most cost effective and environmentally friendly way of pumping slurry.
Tramspread purpose-built engine driven pump designs include skid-mounted, braked fast-tow, 50km/hr towable with and without compressor and specialist Contractor Trailer models (see page 26).
Tramspread’s earlier pump units used re-conditioned combine engines as power units. Most of these older designs remain in service both with customers and within the company’s own contracting fleet. Current pump units are powered by new six-cylinder FPT diesel engines, usually 175hp with 238hp as an option. All will be fitted with either the standard Bauer SX2000 slurry pump or optional Doda HD35. Both will come with a six-inch inlet and four-inch outlet.
All engine powered pumps are primed via a Honda powered Bauer vacuum pump. Most EDPU pumps will have a fuel tank of around 500 litre capacity, with an automated SIL engine control panel and work lights.
24M SUFFOLK DRIBBLE BAR. DUAL MACERATOR TRAMSPREAD
Year: 2017
Condition: Refurbished
Comment: Dual macerator 24m dribble bar applicators are sought after as a used buy with low running costs. Independent geometry control following. First released in 2010, these variants allow eased access to the tractor pickup hitch. Refurbished applicators make a sound used buy.

Skid-mounted pumps will have fork tine and or 3-point linkage systems to allow the unit to be moved into position. Trailer mounted 50km/hr EDPU are of the same spec as the skid versions, but mount on a braked and sprung axle chassis with wheels and tyres to suit 50km/h transport speeds. Braked fast-tow units, mounted on a galvanised chassis with high-speed twin axles.
An engine driven Tramspread pump will be a rare used find. If you do come across one, contact the company for details and advice. Refurbished pumps are available.
Krohne metering units are an increasingly common fitment and, along with an NIR manure analysis system, can be retrofitted to older applicators. It is advisable to have flowmeters calibrated yearly.
WHAT’S USED
The latest version of the Contractor trailed pumps carry everything needed for an umbilical spreading job. These units are designed to meet the needs of a contractor or farms that are combining resources to share an umbilical system. You are unlikely to find earlier units on the used market.
CONTRACTOR TRAILER
Comprising a self-contained engine-driven pump, compressor for blowing out the drag hose, capacity for carrying 2000m of hose (2x spools) and a work platform with storage for oils, tools, couplings etc. The hose spools are secured by locking pins with no need for straps. The extended drawbar also allows the towing tractor to carry a dribble and rear ground clearance is raised to allow reversing up lagoon banks.
Tramspread had been producing slurry spreading booms for a decade before it began contracting with umbilical spreading systems in 1998. Company founder Terry Baker designed the first Contractor Trailer to reduce the movements needed to set up his spreading system. It was 7.30m long, and was built using a used Iveco six-cylinder turbocharged engine driving a Bauer SM3500 pump via a Comer gearbox. It was controlled by a Murphy control panel. The original engine is still working for Tramspread Contracting and has 25,000 hours on the clock. These early single-axle trailers used commercial trailer axles without suspension and carried a single tractormounted 1,200m or 1,400m hose reel.
The second-generation Contractor Trailer was introduced in 2013. New from the ground up, with a longer 8.60m chassis, twin-axle running gear,
suspension, 435/50R19.5 wheels and tyres and hydraulic brakes. The front section was reconfigured to carry two 1,000m random wrap hose spools. A larger fuel tank placed between the axles more than doubled capacity to 900-litres. A compressor was placed above the front axle, with room for a work platform and two large tool boxes over the second. The EDPU sat at the rear and was skid-mounted for easy removal if required.
The initial prototype identified the need for a longer drawbar and greater rear ground clearance to enable reversing up lagoon banks, with these features incorporated into production versions. Further modifications in 2022 saw the Contractor Trailer widened by 200mm to enable Doda and Cri-man pumps and the fitting of higher-output compressors.
Current Contractor Trailers are fitted with an FPT six-cylinder 175hp engine, with 238hp as an option, a Bauer SX2000 pump or Doda or Cri-Man as an option, Honda-driven Bauer vacuum pump for priming, 140 CFM compressor, with 180, 260 or 425 CFM options, 900-litre fuel tank, twin-axle running gear with suspension and air-brakes. Other options include a pig (sponge ball) launcher and suction hose transport kit.
WHAT’S USED
WHAT ABOUT A COMPRESSOR?
Many Tramspread engine driven pumps will incorporate an air compressor as part of the unit, this having the power to blow the umbilical hose run through to clear it of slurry making it easier to roll it onto a reel when the spreading job is completed. The compressor units used are typically refurbished high output road units of 140, 180 or 260 CFM output. If you are building up an umbilical system using used elements from different sources, you may need to add a compressor to the list.
How a compressor is linked into the system may appear to be as simple as using a coupling kit and just hooking the pipe to the air supply, but it is a bit more complicated than this. Seek advice or you may end up getting covered in muck or filling the compressor filter with slurry.
Tramspread produces an optional sponge ball or ‘pig’ launcher which uses a pneumatic valve to isolate the launching chamber. This is to ensure it is kept clear of slurry. The ball is launched using the compressor’s full output to clear the hose. Worth consideration when looking at used pump units.
PUMP CONTROL SYSTEMS
The benefits of an engine driven pump can be taken a step further with a remote control and monitoring system. Tramspread offer two systems, GSM based Teletram 2020 and radio control SIL Vision. As each has evolved it is best to seek advice to ensure the system is viable and whether upgrades are recommended. These systems enable the pump to be

Inspection is eased by easy access ring bolts but check the pipes are clear before opening up for a peek inside.
controlled from the applicator tractor, enabling one person to operate and monitor an entire umbilical system. When coupled to inlet and outlet pressure sensors and to a flow meter the system can also warn of potential problems to include drag hose leaks.
Both control systems can offer:
• Electronic throttle control
• Engine start/stop
• Fuel level sensing
• Pump operation control (and divert)
• Compressor start/stop
• Spread/mix hours recording
• Slurry spread volume recording
• Inlet and outlet pressure monitoring
• Automatic engine protection to detect low oil pressure, high coolant temperature and low coolant level Additional options include a nurse tank level sensor, cameras and pig sponge ball launcher control.
HOSE REELERS AND SPOOLS
Tramspread mounted random wrap hose reelers can be used on the front or rear of tractors. They have increased in capacity over time to accommodate spools carrying from 600m to 1000m of hose and more recently up to 1400m. Tramspread galvanised spools are held in place by two securing pins to speed pick up and drop off.
Tramspread offers two remote-control systems, SIL Vision radio control and GSM based Teletram 2020. Both systems have evolved and may have been updated. In-cab controller allows the operator to monitor the pump remotely.
WHAT’S USED
Drag loop, or ‘cow horn’ can be used to move the hose across the field when spreading along tramlines (above). A hose humper is an alternative design, this working without the need to be plumbed into the hose run.
This enables a single reeler to be used to handle several spools.
As a used buyer, your choices are likely to be limited, but specifications to consider will include hose capacity in metres and if the reel spools are powered by twin or single hydraulic motors. A 600m model, capable of handling 600m of 4” and 5” diameter hose, uses a single hydraulic motor and gear to rotate the reel. The 1,000m version, which can accommodate 1,000m of 4” or 5” hose or 800m of 6” will have twin hydraulic motor
drive to increase hose recover power to deal with reeling in longer pipe runs. The recently released 1,400m model also uses twin motor drive, but used examples are unlikely to be available.
Trailed 1,600m and 2,000m reelers with segmented or random wrap are offered but are less popular, especially in the UK. Here the combination of a mounted reeler and multiple spools is typically much preferred. Used availability is likely to reflect this popularity.
DRAG LOOP AND HOSE HUMPER
For spreading in tramlines (working parallel rather than corner to corner) a drag loop, or ‘cow horn’, can be connected into the pipe to manipulate the hose and move it across the field, with the cow horn tractor usually working at 90 degrees to the tramlines somewhere across the middle of the field to keep the hose moved over. Used drag loops are occasionally available, but they are not expensive to buy new.
The Tramspread Wagtail hose humper is another option, with pivoting and fixed versions offered, both using a rotating ‘wheel’ to move the hose over. It does not need to be plumbed into the system.
DRIBBLE BARS
Tramspread dribble bars may well be offered in a range of designs and, in the case of current units, with features that can include contour following and section control. When it comes to used finds though, you are again going to have limited choices. A 12.0m dribble bar with a single macerator will be among the more likely used offerings as these are increasingly traded in against either a wider or twin macerator alternative. This is not to suggest that the wider units will never reach the used market. At the
time of writing, Tramspread had a 2017 twin macerator 24m Suffolk dribble bar available. Recently refurbished, it was on offer for just under £40k. At the entry level end, a 12m Tramspread unit in good shape with a single macerator will sell from around £10-12k.
Most users will actually end up keeping an older dribble bar applicator as a back-up or to provide extra capacity. The galvanised construction and repairable design of the framework can mean these applicators can last for years, the macerators all being designed to be repairable or refurbished.
Single macerator Tramspread Suffolk dribble bars are offered in 6.0m, 7.0m, 7.5m, 8.0m, 9.0m and 12.0m working widths, these having a Vogelsang ECQ or an Alrena distributor/macerator. These are galvanised and can also be tanker mounted.
Built to essentially the same design, wider 12.0m, 15.0m, 16.0m and 18.0m twin Vogelsang ECQ or Alrena distributor/ macerator versions are the next models up, with the option to incorporate valves to
reduce the spread with.
If you need a bit more spreading versatility, Tramspread can sell you an 18.0/24.0m dribble bar with Aluminium booms with left and right geometric control and a parallelogram centre frame to allow spread height to be controlled independently of the tractor linkage and full electro-hydraulic control via an in-cab control box.
PRECISION FARMING
Tramspread began to offer a flowmeter, RDS rate monitor and in-cab printer to provide application records from 2008. Current systems now enable a flowmeter and NIR sensor to be connected to an in-cab monitor to analyse the slurry nutrient value. This data can then be set to automatically adjust the tractor’s forward speed to achieve the target application rate according to either NPK value or overall volume.
With a tractor connected to a John Deere Operations Centre system, information to

include application maps can be transferred to the farm or contractor’s office. These elements may possibly be retrofitted to an existing dribble bar but check first. As the value of slurry and manure is increasingly recognised, accurate monitoring is yet more to think about.
SUMMARY
Is this a complete and detailed look at the Tramspread offering? No, certainly not, there isn’t space to cover everything in detail let alone variations and one-off builds. But this is not the key point. If you are after a used Tramspread umbilical spreading system, or even individual components, your options may be rather limited and not reflect the broad offering of new units. You can, following the right advice, mix and match new and used kit, a point to consider if you want to set up an umbilical system from scratch.

NATIONAL VINTAGE TRACTOR ROAD RUN
Well I had a great time in Cornwall on the National Vintage Tractor Road Run on Easter Day, which started at St Merryn Airfield near Padstow.
Thanks to Matt young of Tamar Vintage Tractors I was loaned a 1956 Fordson E1A Major with live drive for the day. The tractor was an older restoration, but had been serviced for the run and was in excellent order and suited me very well. It had plenty of power particularly in comparison to some of the other E1As on the run and did not belch out black smoke as we climbed up

Some 508 tractors were entered, but chairman of the Cornish Tractor Club
Martin Dymond explained there were 492 on the run on the day, remember these tractors are pre-1985. Over 600 people enjoyed the Saturday evening affair where there was a choir, comedian who also sang well accompanied by a live band and of course good food. We were away just before 10am as the sun just about came out as the cloud lifted. The highlight of the run was travelling around Mawgan Porth Bay
After travelling near Lahainsworth we turned right as John Tootle from Cornwall on his 6-cylinder E1A Power Major conversion passes my 1956 Live Drive E1A steed for the day.
It was going to be a great day ahead on the fine well serviced 1956 Fordson E1A Major.
and up the mighty hill towards Trevarran and onto Newquay Airport which we drove right by. The lunch stop at Treaddern Farm near St Columb Major was excellent and quite a few tractors were leaving as others were arriving as it should be. I just didn’t realise how many farms were in North Cornwall and the roads were very free of traffic at this time of year and reasonably wide compared to here in East Sussex.
Having been on most of the runs since the late 1980s I have to say this was an excellent event – the event was last held in Cornwall in 2003. That year it started from the Cornish Agricultural Showground at Wadebridge. The 2026 run was in the same class as the well organised SEVAC 2024 National which was based at Plumpton College in East Sussex and of course raised over £20,000 from the day’s proceedings. 80TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATED IN STYLE
Thanks to his son Russ Wheatland and the Chailey Vintage Tractor Club a surprise Birthday South Downs Road Run was organised on Saturday 11 April in glorious weather for Roger Wheatland who was celebrating his 80th birthday.
The plant contractor has been part of the preservation scene since the late 1980s and was well known for his threshing demonstrations with his Field Marshall tractor collection at the head end, which have since been dispersed like his threshing drum – all are safe today and seen at events in others hands. However Roger still has a collection of other tractors and was out on
his faithful John Deere 5010 beast. Since Roger does not use the internet or social media, he did not have a clue as to what was going on and it was all a total surprise and he thought he was going to meet me for an interview.
The weather was superb when over 50 tractors gathered of all kinds for the very special event which started near Chailey and travelled approximately 30 miles across the South Downs during the event.
After the run Roger enjoyed the excellent evening bash arranged by Russ and celebrated by friends and members of the Chailey Cub. Congratulations Roger on making 80, your contribution to the tractor

STOLEN
It is sad to report that a 1966 Massey Ferguson 135 ‘Red Giant’GPW348D was stolen over the Easter weekend near Banham Zoo, Norfolk.
The tractor features a cab, V5c and on the back was a MF 9-tine cultivator. The working style tractor is in good clean running condition and was placed two fields from any road and hidden away and very hard to find, but thieves who must have had inside knowledge of its whereabouts stole it. A small reward has been offered for its recovery as the owner is heartbroken over its loss, tel, 01953 8837400.

In late June the Chailey Club has organised an overseas road run to Normandy. Some 110 tractors and vehicles have entered and are travelling to Dieppe via the Newhaven overnight ferry and on to a French agricultural weekend rally some 50 kms along the coast. This bi-annual event has grown considerably since it started some eight years ago and is now hugely popular and helps with relationships between our two great nations.

ONE FAMILY TRACTOR
Without doubt one of the most original tractors on the National Vintage Tractor Road Run at At Merryn Airfield, Padstow, Cornwall on Sunday 5 April was the John Sutton owned 1954 David Brown 50D with winch.
The tractor has been in the family since new and has been based in the Midlands for its entire life.
It was bought by John’s father Fred of Nuneaton on 31 January 1955 from John Holdrans Ltd for £1,090 and was used in the threshing business for some years and was retired when the Massey-Harris Ferguson 780 combine arrived. After that it was still used on light work for some years owing to its winch on the backend. Less than 30 of this model were ever sold new in the UK – the rest were exported especially to the
British Empire. In its early life the cylinder head had to be replaced under warranty. In the 1980s the 50D had a small overhaul in various departments and was spruced up.
It was rallied at the Paul Appleton organised Belvoir Castle May events and I was reminded that the Kelsey Publishing Ford Transit van I was driving in 2005 was winched out the site by the Sutton David Brown 50D. John reminded me that I had kindly sent him a gift as payment for his gesture in pulling me off the muddy site.
In recent times John and his wife have moved to Cornwall and it was great to see this lovely original style David Brown 50D out on the roads and going so well again.

REUNITED WITH FORDSON
Ex British Horticultural Ploughing Champion Andy Ford was reunited with his former Fordson Standard N which he has known for over half a century at the Detling Heritage Show on Saturday 11 April.
At the Detling Heritage Show, Maidstone, Kent on Saturday 11 April at the Kent Agricultural Society Showground a record crowd of over 6,000 people were seen looking at the 1,000 + vehicle entries. Here ex British Horticultural Ploughing Champion Andy Ford was reunited with his former 1941 Fordson Standard N.
Andy ploughed with this tractor from the 1970s until the 1990s when he sold it across the Thames. He told me the wings he made for the N were cut out from an old tin bath almost 50 years ago now. The tractor runs without spark plug HT lead top screw nuts, when asked about this he said the spark magnetism keeps the lead on the plug.
Andy went on to explain how many times he had been called out (years back) to various farms to listen to noises in Fordson N cylinder heads. After he had removed them normally he found an offending spark

plug top screw inside the combustion chamber, which remarkably (most) had not gone down the side-valves!
His relative traced the tractor and found it was for sale, which he bought back and is now in the same family as before and even goes ploughing in the autumn season with the new generation of the family at the controls.
There were 28 tractors on show including three Kentish Fordson Dexta’s including a narrow version converted by Stormonts of Hildenborough and Tunbridge Wells at the time.

IAN WALSH AND OTHERS SALE
Held in Northern Ireland and staged well by Cheffins this turned out to be a rather disappointing affair pricewise on Tuesday 24 March. Whether it was the fact that stock would need to be brought back to the UK mainland which put people off, only time will tell. Others have said that there was too much of the blue and red in the sale. People clearly did not want the very interesting Ebro Massey Ferguson/ Fordsons, yet ten years ago they would have sold well that is for sure.
We started off with a very fine original big brute 1998 Ford New Holland 8670 which finished at £15,000. The similar 1996 New Holland 7840SLE four-wheel drive raised an average £13,500 and the similar age 8770 four-wheel drive £15,500. A 1988 Ford 7610 two-wheel drive, £14,500, next

was the Ford 7110 S11 four-wheel drive, a clean machine at £20,000. Three TWs were next, all looking a little dusty, but original with the 20 four-wheel drive with rear wheel weights, £8,200, 15 Series II fourwheel drive £8,400 and 10 two-wheel drive with rear wheel weights £9,200.
Looking good the Highland Park made blue and grey 1964 6000 Commander Select-O-Speed rowcrop made £3,800 in grade 4 condition. Further lots came and went when we got to a famous Northern Ireland restored County 1254 with Hara cab, it raised a thumping £65,000 which is a new record price for one of these tractors.
A lovely original Fordson E27N with Perkins L4 made £2,800 was next. Then came a raft of ex Spanish Massey Ferguson and Ebro machinery. We started with two Massey

Ferguson 178 four-wheel drives the first raised £6,000 and the second £6,200 remembering they do need some tidying up. The three MF 135 four-wheel drives made £5,400, £6,000 and £6,400 needing work. The MF Ebro 160 vineyard did well at £3,600.
An Italian Nuffield 470 Cantatore fourwheel drive needing work raised £3,000 and the Ford 4100 four-wheel drive conversion looked good at £4,000 and the 3000 fourwheel drive got to £3,200. A Ford Pre Force Dexta 2000 four-wheel drive made £5,400 and a similar example with roll bar got to £3,600, both needing some work. The Fordson Dexta vineyard two-wheel drive, £2,600 and the standard Dexta’s did well at £4,000 each. There was some lovely County crawlers at the end offered in good original style the best did £2,600.
The restored County 1254 with Hara cab raised a record £65,000.

Most of the Massey Fergusons were imported from Spain some years ago now the 178 four-wheel drive raised just over £6,000 on the day.
Another big monster was the 1996 Ford New Holland 8770 Genesis with front linkage £15,500.
MASSEY FERGUSON’S TOP
With 7498 hours on the clock, this 2018 John Deere 6155M was in good overall condition and sold for £35,500.
There was a lot of interest in the Euro Auctions sale in March, where over 80 tractors were on offer. There was no doubt as to which machines got the most attention, including the ex Russian ordered unused Massey Ferguson 7724S examples, and as it turned out, the most expensive tractor was a two hour MF 8730S Dyna VT. Of course, other manufacturers were represented, with some quality machines offered from other well known makes.

Also of interest was a vintage Track Marshall 50, the type used on Hastings beach by the fisherman for decades, but that has all changed now and Hasting men have gone Komatsu crawler mad this days. The regular tractors followed, with a series of unused Massey Fergusons leading the way. First to go under the hammer was an 8730S Dyna VT with only two hours on the clock, it sold for £102,000 after some competitive bidding. Nothing else came close, although a

selection of unused MF 7724S examples also got a lot of attention with their selling prices ranging from £74,000 to £77,000. There were also some other working Massey Fergusons on offer, including a 7720S Dyna VT that dated from 2019. Showing 6,290 hours on the clock and in good overall condition, it sold for £26,000, while a 2017 Massey Ferguson 5711SL Dyna 4 with 7074 hours behind it made £21,500. Cheaper still, but capable of further work was a 2006 MF 5455 that was fitted with a front loader. That sold for £13,500; while an undated Massey Ferguson 4255 with 4,633 hours behind it went on to sell for £12,500.
The best of the John Deeres, price wise, was this 6215R from 2017 John Deere 6215R that had 13516 hours on the clock. In good condition overall, it sold for £31,000.
Moving on, and also doing well was a 2017 JCB Fastrac that sold for £47,500, while the best of the John Deeres on offer was a 6155M that dated from 2018. Showing 7,498 hours on the clock, it sold for £35,500, while a 2017 John Deere 6215R that had 13,516 hours behind it saw bidding reach its selling price of £31,000 grade 10.
Standing out among the Fendt tractors were a 933 Vario from 2008 which sold for £34,000 and a 2015 Fendt 208 which made £33,000, while the most expensive Case-IH tractor in the auction was a 160 from 2015 with 4,745 hours behind it, selling for £31,000.
Then came a couple of Valtra tractors, with a T203D from 2013 that had the benefit of being fitted with a Quicke Q76 front loader. With 6,771 hours on the clock, it sold for £28,500, while a 2010 Valtra T121 with 4,768 hours behind it made £24,500. There were also a couple of Claas tractors in the sale, the best of which was a 2014 Axion 850 that had 9,405 hours on the clock and good tyres. In good workmanlike condition, it sold for £24,000, while the best of the New Holland tractors in the sale was 2003 TM175 that was showing 9,641 hours on the clock. In good condition, it sold for £18,000. As usual, there were some older and cheaper tractors in the sale including Ford models. Starting things off was a 1996 Ford 4830 four-wheel drive that was in good overall condition which sold for £6,250, while an original looking 1986 Ford 4610 four-wheel drive sold for £4,250. Also in good condition was a 1991 Ford 3930 fourwheel drive with sun roof which sold for £5,000, while again in good shape overall was a 1970 Ford 2000 that made £3,000. The rally field was also beckoning for several Massey Ferguson tractors including an undated 135 that had the benefit of being fitted with a topper and rotovator, In good shape overall, the combination sold for £6,000, while not far behind was a 185 with front loader that sold for £5,750. Also in good shape was a cabbed 1975 Massey Ferguson 165 2wd which sold for £2,250, while selling for £3,000 was an original looking French made MF 133 that was

On Saturday 28 March Halls held their first vintage tractor sale at their Shrewsbury Auction Centre. It turned out very well for Henry and his team with the three main lots sold for £35,200 between them.
This was for the 1971 Massey Ferguson 135 Multi-Power WHR352K at £10,800. The 1976 Massey Ferguson 168 Multi-Power LFB785P grade 5 was yours at £14,400 and the very original 1973 Massey Ferguson 165 MultiPower EVN165L £10,000 with 6,956 hours on the clock and loader a superb price.
These two Massey Ferguson grade 5 tractors sold for £25,200 between them.
HALLS COLLECTIVE
A very strong price indeed was also paid for Bill Carr’s 2021 restored 1969 Ford Force 3000 APY269G at £9,200. Another Massey Ferguson 135 with plough light, again restored by Bill Carr some years back, but no paperwork was yours at £9,000. Earlier on the very original clamshell winged 1965 MF 135 MP CFX985C ‘Red Giant’ raised a

cracking £7,850. The 1980 Massey Ferguson 2640 GRG15V two-wheel drive, looking restored sold for £9,400. An original 1976 Ford 6600 with Q cab TNT317R did very well indeed at £11,500. Interestingly the sale featured a rare to the UK Fendt Farmer 203 which raised £2,300, all in all a great start for Halls here.

STRONG MONEY PAID
Held in bright, but not over warm conditions on Saturday 11 April at Severn View Farm, St Briavels, Lydney, Gloucestershire where the Cooke family vintage and modern farm machinery sale took place. It was sold by David James Chartered Surveyors and the tractors and equipment were either restored or in good original condition.
Creating a new price record was the 1966 McCormick 523 at £10,000.
The lovely original style Leyland 245 sold at £3,450.
Two records were achieved here when the IHC Nuess German factory made, but sold new in the UK in 1966, McCormick 523 raised £10,000 in good restored condition. As for the Ford Force 4000 an older restoration with the rear cab wings featuring surface rust, selling for a remarkable £11,250 grade 4. A very original and tidy Leyland 245 was got away at £3,450 grade 3.

The late International 10/20 with pneumatic conversions sold for a very good £4,400 grade 5.

Some £3,300 was paid for the Case David Brown 995. Other DB prices saw 1200 Selectamatic, £4,100 and 1961 950 £920.

CLARKE & SIMPSON
On 1 April the excellent Clarke and Simpson HQ at Campsea Ash, Woodbridge, Suffolk staged its latest collective, which featured nearly 60 tractors.
It started for us with two Ferguson TE-As which raised £480 and £500 to be followed with a Fordson N Utility at £600 and a similar example grade 4 £850. Doing slightly better was the Volvo T24 gas at £1,100 grade 4. A Massey Ferguson 135 with loader, RRT39F grade 2 sold for £3,400 and the Flexi cab example the same money. The 1979 John Deere 3130 two-wheel drive FJN17T in off farm condition made £6,900. Next a 1984 Deutz D6807C two-wheel drive with 7,959 hours got to £5,400 grade 3.

The stars in the sale were the four Ford 1000 series, starting with the 1975 Ford 4000 HRT254N, £3,800 grade 3; it was followed with the 1977 4600 SNO876R grade 2, £3,400. We moved up to the two Ford 5000s, KJE454P with 2,739 hours which raised £7,000, although original it looked very tired. Next was the rebuilt December 1974 5000 PPV98M which changed hands at £16,500. Lastly the 1978 Ford 7600 EBJ611P finished up at £7,000. Later on in the sale a 1995 Massey Ferguson 6150 four-wheel drive with loader, M556FDX and 5,897 hours did well at £17,500. Lastly the very original 1967 Class Matador which was last used during the 2024 harvest got to £850, which I feel is not enough to see it change hands.
The restored Ford 5000 went on to make £16,500 here.

ROY BECCONSALL SALE
On 11 March Cheffins concluded this neat sale which featured five David Brown related classics. It started with the 1986 International-Case-DB 1394 Hydra-shift two-wheel drive C987KBV with just 2,956 hours, sold for £9,600 grade 3. It was followed by the similar example one year younger D923PWP that had 4,066 hours on it and that was got away at £8,000.

To round things off the 2001 McConnel Power Arm PA41 hedge cutter was very popular at £5,800. The good prices were created by a well looked after and clean fleet of machines.

ONLINE COLLECTIVE
On 23 March 2026 Cheffins staged an online collective for Woodacre Farms, near Preston, Lancashire. The modern MF fleet made expected prices.
A clean 1992 Massey Ferguson 3080 four-wheel drive raised £11,500 and the 1989 Massey Ferguson 360 four-wheel drive £13,500. As for the original 1970 David Brown 990 Hi-Clear with roll bar and wheel covers, some £5,400 was offered for it. There was also a clean 1979 Ford 7600 two-wheel drive with Q cab that got to £12,500.

500R SPRAYER TO MAKE CEREALS DEBUT
John Deere’s 500R sprayer will be making its first appearance at Cereals as the company plans a show stand packed full of innovation.
The self-propelled machine was unveiled in 2025 and will be travelling to Diddly Squat in June to take part in Sprays and Sprayers Arena Demonstrations, as well as lining up alongside the 300M and R975i on the stand.
John Deere combined an eye-catching new design for its largest sprayer with technology and features to optimise performance while also simplifying daily operations.
The UK and Ireland’s largest arable farmers and contractors are expected to extract the most value from the 500R, which has been developed to meet the needs of those looking for the ultimate in cab comfort, spray accuracy, droplet quality and precision telematics.
The 550R and the 540R have tank capacities of 5,000 litres or 4,000 litres respectively. Both have the option of a 30m or 36m steel boom – capacity and boom span are the only key differences in what is otherwise two almost identical standard specifications.
UK & Ireland, said the sprayer won’t be the only new piece of equipment this year.
“We will have more news to share before the event gets underway, so there will be several very good reasons to come to our stand at what should be a really great show in its new location,” he said.
Over the past 18 months, John Deere has launched a huge array of new products, including, most recently, its 8R high-horsepower machines. While the Waterloo-built 634hp tractor will not be making its way to the Cotswolds in 2026, there will be plenty of green and yellow metal.
The flagship X9 combine, which delivers an average of 45% more capacity across all crop types with no sacrifice in grain quality – all while using 20% less fuel – will lead the harvesting line-up on the stand.
Both the 6M and 6R series tractors will also be on show, where attendees can see what makes these cost-effective tractors some of the most versatile machines on the market, with precision ag, high engine performance, and first-class cab comfort.
Attendees will also be able to learn more about John Deere’s See & Spray technology, as well as the subscription-based Precision Essentials package, which allows operators to see the benefit of precision technologies without having to purchase the equipment outright, unlocking a simple, scalable way to introduce guidance and automation onto farms.
“Cereals is about the people as well as the product, and as usual we will have a big team of experts on hand to meet customers,” Chris added. “We look forward to the chance to catch up with our existing contacts and also making some new ones.”

The event is being staged by AEA, the farm machinery manufacturers’ trade body, at Slacks Farm near Lockerbie, Dumfries & Galloway, on Wednesday, May 13 as a practical working showcase for the latest grass management, harvesting and feeding technology for contractors and farmers.
Examples of the all-new 335hp Fastrac will be in action alongside the 235hp Fastrac 4220 on the McHale working plot (103), demonstrating its unique combination of power, traction and four-wheel steer agility for operating high-capacity grass equipment such as mowers, tedders, balers and wrappers.
The newcomer retains the Fastrac’s signature axle suspension front and rear, which not only provides the best operator comfort over long working days but also ensures sure-footed field work and road travel – legally at up to 66kph thanks to the suspended axles and a braking system to
commercial vehicle standards.
A new engine and stepless transmission combination are performance-matched to deliver smooth speed transitions and efficient power and torque delivery.
Up in the cab, the highly-configurable touch-screen iCON control centre offers ISOBUS implement operation if required, and a comprehensive suite of factoryinstalled precision farming features. These include a multi-mode guidance system with a choice of automated headland turn patterns and a unique twin satellite receiver installation that provides reliable accuracy, especially over rolling terrain.
The latest JCB 435S heavy-duty silage and muck loader working on the ScotGrass silage clamp has significantly more power and torque throughout the engine’s operating speed range, with peak power up 12% to 282hp equating to an unequalled 19hp per tonne power-to-weight ratio.
New control features for the six-speed powershift transmission increase performance efficiency both on the clamp and on the road, and the 435S also has new innovative load weighing and lever-steering options.
For high-lift operations – particularly
stacking and retrieving bales – the new JCB Loadall 542-100 combines 4.2 tonne lift capacity and 9.8m lift height with the unique 40kph or 50kph DualTech VT transmission.
Yet despite these all-round gains –including a heavier duty driveline on the 50kph version – the newcomer is no bigger than the existing 536-95, so it has the manoeuvrability needed for every-day work in and around farm buildings.
JCB’s ultra-compact Telemaster loader – taking the range to nine models in all –emulates the flexible performance of its bigger siblings in a package just 1.56m wide and 2.2m tall. The diminutive machine is capable of lifting a useful 1,100kg at full articulation and with the boom at its 3.5m lift height; it can also tow trailed equipment weighing up to 750kg thanks to its 50hp engine and 30kph hydrostatic transmission.
NEW DEFRA-APPROVED DISINFECTANT LAUNCHED AS BIOSECURITY CONCERNS GROW
A powerful new DEFRA-approved disinfectant designed to help farmers protect livestock and strengthen on-farm biosecurity has been launched by Roam Technology.
Virox is a broad-spectrum surface disinfectant that effectively eliminates bacteria, viruses, yeasts and fungi while meeting the strictest European EN standards. Developed for use across livestock systems, the product forms part of Roam Technology’s wider cleaning and disinfection portfolio, supporting high hygiene standards on livestock farms.
As a DEFRA-approved disinfectant, Virox is approved for use against several significant disease threats including foot-and-mouth disease, swine vesicular disease and avian influenza as well as general orders*.
Formulated using potassium peroxymonosulphate, Virox provides powerful antimicrobial activity. When dissolved in water, it produces reactive radicals that target the organic structures of microorganisms, including cell membranes. Surfactants within the formulation enhance this activity by increasing microbial membrane permeability while also helping to dissolve dirt and grease. Acids are included to lower pH and help remove rust and limescale.

NEW SPRAY AIMS TO IMPROVE EFFICIENCY OF PIG IDENTIFICATION
A new and vibrant pig marking spray will be launched at the British Pig & Poultry Fair 2026 on 13-14 May, offering producers a fast, effective solution for temporary animal identification. Limagrain Field Seeds is taking variety trials beyond the plot with the launch of a new UK farmer-led Demonstration Farm network.
The initiative is designed to give growers a clearer, more practical view of how varieties perform in real farming systems – moving away from purely small-plot data and into field-scale reality.
Instead of relying solely on trial sites and headline figures, the network will showcase Limagrain genetics under the pressures that shape day-to-day farm decisions, including soil type, rotation, cultivation and input strategy.
Nicolle Hamilton, marketing director at Limagrain, explained that the aim is to give growers a different perspective.
“We want to offer growers a more meaningful way of looking at our varieties –through a farmer lens,” she said.
“That means taking them out of controlled conditions and putting them into real farming systems, managed by farmers making commercial decisions every day.
While she stressed that formal trials and the AHDB Recommended List remain important benchmarks, she added they do not always reflect the realities of commercial farming.
“This is not about replacing trials – it’s about adding another layer,” she said.
“Farmers want to know how varieties establish, how they cope with different soils and how they perform under lower inputs or after cover crops. That is where this approach adds value.”
“It’s about working with farmers, listening to them and learning from them.”
Heather Oldfield, Limagrain cereals product manager, said the strength of the network lies in its farmer-led approach.
“The focus is not on identifying a single standout variety, but on understanding where different genetics fit.
“There is no perfect variety,” she continued. “Success comes from putting the right variety in the right place. What works on one farm may not work on another. These Demo Farms help us show those differences in a way that is relevant to growers.”

THE FARMERS
The first two farms in the network are based in Suffolk and Staffordshire, offering two contrasting systems.
Ryan McCormack hosts the East Anglian site at Dennington Hall Farms, while Rob Atkin farms in Staffordshire.
Together, they provide a broad snapshot of how varieties perform across different soils, climates and management approaches.
At Dennington Hall Farms, Ryan McCormack is running a highly integrated system combining arable, livestock and environmental management.
The farm operates a 12-year rotation and places strong emphasis on soil health, with cover cropping, minimal cultivation and livestock grazing all playing a role.
“I’m farming for margin, but also for my soils,” said Ryan. “That means I need varieties that can cope with reduced tillage, cover crops and lower inputs. The only way to understand that is to test them in those conditions.”
His trials include comparing multiple varieties under different establishment systems within the same field, giving a clear view of how genetics respond to management.
In contrast, Rob Atkin’s Staffordshire farm operates across a wide range of soil types, from heavy clay to high-organic-matter silt.
The mixed farm includes combinable crops alongside beef and sheep, with a growing focus on soil health and cost control.
“I still need yield to pay the bills,” he said. “But I want varieties that work on farm, not just in perfect plots. I want to know how they perform under pressure.”
For Mr Atkin, the value of the network lies in its honesty: “It’s about seeing what works, what doesn’t and why – that is far more useful than just looking at figures.”

COLLECTION HUBS OPEN FOR 2026 SEASON
Tubex® has announced the 2026 opening times for the nationwide network of hubs participating in its Tree Shelter Collection and Recycling Programme – with the scheme approaching the milestone of two million used shelters collected and recycled, following strong growth in returns during 2025.
The scheme – the UK’s largest dedicated tree shelter collection and recycling network –recorded a 39% increase in the number of shelters returned last year compared with 2024. The figures underline growing engagement from across the forestry sector as attention continues to focus on the end-oflife management of tree shelters and the need for practical, scalable recovery routes.
For the 2026 season, the Programme continues with a UK-wide network of more than 20 collection hubs, developed in partnership with distributors and forestry organisations to provide accessible free drop-off points for used shelters. Hub partners include Yorkshire Dales Millenium Trust, Forest Working Plastics Group, Tilhill, Maydencroft, British Hardwood Tree Nursery, Ashlea Landscaping and Greentech, among others.
The latest partner to open a hub is Cambridge-based environmental services contractor, Chaffin Works. The company’s contract manager, Dan Palmer said: “We’ve seen the success of the scheme and are delighted to join, to help our community dispose of used shelters sustainably. To see so few hubs in our area could potentially be a limiting factor for contractors and small holding proprietors looking to recycle small or even large numbers of tree shelters. When I saw the hub location map, I thought that we need to contribute to the success of the recycling project.”
The scheme accepts used polypropylene and polyethylene shelters, as well as mesh tubes, from all manufacturers. In addition to hub drop-off, doorstep collection is also available for a small fee, offering an additional route for estates, contractors and land managers handling larger volumes of end-of-life material.

THE NEXT GENERATION

This new mode of action targets nucleic acid metabolism, a biochemical pathway that has never previously been utilised by cereal fungicides. This significant innovation provides valuable protection against key diseases in cereals and oilseed rape, including septoria and sclerotinia, offering UK farmers an additional form of defense in the fight against crop diseases and a powerful tool for disease resistance management.
Gilboa is currently progressing through the regulatory approval process with product availability expected for the 2027 season. "Gilboa is an incredibly exciting and important new fungicide for the industry,” explained Jonny Oosthuizen, Portfolio and Campaign Manager – Cereals, ADAMA UK. “To be able to develop and bring to market a new mode of action that is performing on a level with market leaders really proves ADAMA's commitment to UK arable farming."
IT’S ALL ABOUT THE PELLET
Ferrabait is a brand new slug pellet which uses the novel molluscicide active ingredient, Feralla, to set a new standard in the rapid control of all slug and snail species.
Approved for use on all cereal, vegetable,
grass ley and high value broad-field crops, Ferrabait® slug pellets contain a complex proprietary formulation of 12 ingredients including 1% w/w Feralla (10.2 g/kg elemental iron) which is toxic to slugs. Ferrabait pellets also contain a blend of high-quality wheat flours which ensure optimum pellet palatability, and humic acids which stimulates rapid feeding. The pellets also boast classleading levels of longevity thanks to ADAMA’s unique manufacturing process.
Available in autumn 2026, Ferrabait pellets are manufactured to tight processing specifications to ensure each pellet is of a uniform size, shape, weight, consistency and colour. “At a size of 2.5mm by 2.1mm, Ferrabait pellets spread accurately to wide operating widths and provide the optimal number of baiting points (40-50 pellets per m2) when applied at typical field rates,” explained Catherine Whaley, Product Development Area Manager for ADAMA in Central and North Europe. “This spreading accuracy, combined with their rapid-stop feeding effect, excellent palatability and durability even in the wettest conditions, ensures crops treated with Ferrabait are protected quickly and for longer against all species of slugs.”
HORSCH CONTINUES TO FOCUS ON SOIL HEALTH
Cereals 2026 will see Horsch continue to focus on soil health as the driver for sustainable farming. From shallow and ultra-shallow cultivators to min-till, striptill and direct drills, the guiding principle has always been on improving soil health by minimising soil disturbance. Features such as low-disturbance coulters and wider row spacings are part of this approach.
This allows the soil structure to develop, increasing the organic matter and earthworm population, and by association, capturing and managing carbon within the soil.
DIRECT DRILLING WITH WIDER ROW SPACING
“The 25cm row spacing is proving popular with the very successful 12m Avatar model. Customers are reporting little to no detriment
to yield in most crops, particularly in winter crops, yet lower input costs,” highlighted Stephen Burcham, General Manager at Horsch UK.
Horsch customer, Wright’s Agriculture carefully considered the move to an Avatar with 25cm spacing. “We wanted a 12m drill with discs and it needed to have the flexibility to work in varied conditions. We had reservations about the 25cm row spacings compared with our 12.5cm spacing on our previous 8m drills,” said Eric Wright.
“We wanted to plant all cereal and broadleaved crops with the drill, although the crops look widely spaced when they first emerge, you can’t tell the difference by harvest. The crops had room to grow and because we are only disturbing half the land we were before, we needed far less herbicide.”
The Avatar 8.25 SD, 9.25 SD, 10.25 SD and 12.25 SD offer 8-12m working widths
respectively and feature the popular 25cm row spacing. The models feature a versatile triple tank system with a capacity of 6400 litres. The triple tank offers a 60:10:30 split in capacity while a double-tank option with a 60:40 split is also available.
A CHOICE OF DISC OR TINE DIRECT DRILLING
In addition to the disc Avatar, the Sprinter 12.25 SC tine drill offers 12m working width, a 3m transport width with a 4m transport height to make it even more manoeuvrable. It is equipped with a 6,300 litre double hopper and will soon be available with a triple tank or additional MiniDrill options. The hopper design is based on that of the Avatar 8.25 and can apply up to four components.
The tines of the Sprinter 12.25 SC are hydraulically pre-stressed, with a coulter pressure up to 180kg, and can be retracted for transport. They ensure a high clearance between frame and surface as well as between the seed coulters making them ideal for direct
or mulch seeding. The tines are individually depth-controlled with a press wheel and the 3-bar tine section and 25cm tine spacing offers a straw-free and clod-free sowing horizon.
6M MOUNTED DRILLS
The trailed Avatar and Sprinter models also have mounted siblings combined with a Partner FT front tank, offering farmers great flexibility and manoeuvrability, and retaining the wider spacing.
The 6m Avatar SL is designed for precise
sowing in mulch seed conditions. The SL mounted model reduces tillage to a minimum yet works well in high amounts of straw residue, and in harder soils. Row spacings of 25cm or 30cm pave the way for mechanical weed control.
The 6m Sprinter 6.25 SL is ideal for working in wetter conditions and on light and medium soils. As with the Sprinter SC, the tines are individually depth-controlled with a press wheel and have 25cm tine spacings.
MAKING THE MOST OF ORGANIC INPUTS
With fertiliser prices remaining high, many UK vineyards are taking a closer look at how nutrients are applied and where savings can be made. Organic materials such as compost and farmyard manure are increasingly being used to supplement or replace bagged fertiliser, particularly in lighter soils where maintaining structure and moisture can be a challenge.
To ensure an efficient application, it is important to be able to control both the conveyor speed and the opening of the rear door. Different materials, and even variations in moisture content within the same load, can significantly affect how compost or farmyard manure flows through the machine. Having the ability to adjust settings allows growers to match application rates to conditions, helping achieve a more even spread and avoid over-application or under-application.
Applying these materials accurately can be difficult in vineyards, where row spacings are tight and access is limited. The Rink

RANGE GAINS 1000L HOPPER AND INCREASED OUTPUT
Stocks Ag has introduced a new pressurised 1,000L steel hopper for the Turbo Jet and Maxi Jet models, expanding the adaptability of the range and reducing refill frequency. Alongside this, the Turbo Jet 8 now benefits from a Hydraulic Fan (HD) upgrade, aligning it with its larger sibling and meeting farmers’ demands for greater working widths and higher forward speeds. Customers seeking a high-capacity applicator can now specify the 1000L hopper, Hydraulic Fan, and high-rate metering block for increased output and more versatile seed application.
The new 1,000L hopper is designed to fit straight onto the standard Turbo Jet or Maxi Jet chassis. A key feature is the side support rails which allow Farmers or OEM customers to brace the hopper to suit bespoke mounting onto different types of host machine. To protect the metering system, the hopper includes a removable sieve that prevents foreign objects from entering the contents of the tank and ending up in the metering unit. A German machinery tour with UK growers.
A group of British fruit and vine growers recently joined specialist machinery dealership, NP Seymour, on a three-day tour of Germany to get a closer look at how the Fendt tractors and viticultural machinery they use are manufactured.
With 20 people in total, including the NP Seymour team, the group brought together vineyard and orchard managers, consultants, and soft fruit growers from East Anglia, Kent, Surrey and Sussex.
“Trips like this are about more than just seeing machinery,” said Claire Seymour, Director at NP Seymour. “We were not only able to see behind the scenes in the factories, but also able to meet the people who design and build the equipment. It was a fantastic opportunity to give back to our clients and a great way to bring growers together, share ideas and build relationships across the British fruit industry.”
DAY ONE – ERO GMBH, SIMMERN
After landing in Frankfurt, the group travelled to ERO in Simmern, where the visit began with lunch and a presentation from Area Sales Manager Ralf Licht introducing the company, its history and product range.
The firm, founded in 1969 by Herbery Roth and Heinz Erbach, now employs over 240 people and produces machinery for the full growing season, including mechanical pruners, canopy equipment and grape harvesters.
Globally, ERO holds around 15% of the grape harvester market, rising to about 80% in Germany for both viticultural equipment and harvesters.
A full factory tour showed the scale straight away. The purpose built site, completed in 2018, includes 15,500 square metres of production space and 3,000 square metres of office and exhibition space. Investment in robotics, moveable racking, and shot blasting and powder coating has improved working conditions and product quality, while expanded assembly and storage support global demand. Alongside the investment in technology, there remains a strong focus on people, with a dedicated apprenticeship area covering training across ten trades.
Around 80% of parts are made in house, with ERO also developing its own software for its self-propelled grape harvesters.
Those on the trip were particularly interested to see the new Grapeliner 8000 series being assembled, featuring the new AGCO Power engine. These machines represent a significant investment, however seeing the level of engineering and attention to detail that goes into their production made it clear why this is the case.
After ERO, the group travelled on to a vineyard and winery where the owner was running Fendt and ERO equipment. The visit offered insight into German wine production, alongside open discussions about the differences between German and UK growing conditions and winemaking preferences. One of the key talking points was the difference in cost per bottle, driven by Germany’s higher yields and lower alcohol duty. A look around the machinery shed also led to conversations about Fendt specifications and what growers prioritise in their own operations.

From Simmern, the group travelled to Landau in der Pfalz to visit Braun Maschinenbau, where the group were greeted with traditional soft Brezels and local sparkling wine.
After a warm welcome from owner Stefan Braun, the visit began with a presentation where Tobias Spieß introduced the company and discussed new products.
Not yet introduced to the UK market, Braun has further improved its vine stem cleaner with the new Modul Clean head now featuring a small engine to increase revolution speed and robust strimmer cord in place of the black paddles to improve the removal of grass and weeds. In addition to this, there is also a new under vine mower head which fits onto the existing Braun modular frames and systems. Both new products led to a valuable discussion around weed management.
The Braun Rollhacke, first developed in 1991, has often been the tool of choice, with around 150,000 units produced and sold,
thanks to its tool free adjustment, low maintenance requirements, and the ability to work both in and out of the soil, with flexible mounting options.
Yet, with concerns about soil erosion and sustainability, more growers are today looking towards methods that avoid disturbing the soil. Braun’s development of the Modul Clean and under vine mower provides a solution and underlines the clear link that exists between manufacturer and user.
Braun’s history and close relationship with growers came through clearly throughout the visit. Founded in 1958 by Stefan’s father, the company still reflects its roots, with some of the original machinery on display in an on site museum.
Braun has been producing under vine cultivation equipment since 1967, and while many of the tools have evolved, the core principles behind systems remain unchanged.
During the full factory tour, the level of detail and craftsmanship that goes into the equipment was to clear to see, giving growers a deeper appreciation of the work behind the machines.
Braun’s purpose built factory, completed in 2016 and covering 18,000 square metres, features well designed layouts, modern robotics and highly specialist equipment.
There was again a strong focus on maintaining control over the production process, with most parts manufactured on site. In many cases, components already have a customer assigned by the time they leave the welding stage, reflecting the level of demand and customisation.
Afterwards, additional visits, organised by Braun, to another winery and a large vineyard contracting business using Fendt, ERO and Braun equipment helped bring everything into context. The contracting operation in particular stood out, with a fleet of seven Fendt tractors and 14 ERO Grapeliner harvesters.
DAY THREE – FENDT FORUM, MARKTOBERDORF
The final visit of the trip was to the Fendt Forum, home to Fendt’s main manufacturing facility in Germany, where over 100 tractors are produced each day.
While the Fendt Forum and Dieselross restaurant are both open to the public, factory tours are exclusively reserved for customers and sales partners only. Fendt does not permit tour groups to take photographs or notes, but the scale and level of organisation left a memorable impression and it was a real highlight and a fitting way to end the trip.
By seeing both how machinery is made and the attention to detail that goes into every part of every product, the group returned with a better understanding of the equipment they rely on, and the thinking behind it.
