A PREMIUM USED BUY?

Fendt launched its 500 Vario tractors back in 2013, with four models spanning a nominal 108hp to 148hp. As is typically the case, it is the most powerful variant, the Fendt 516 Vario that has proven the strongest seller, with these models the most likely used find. Now in their third generation, the 500 series continues to command a premium as a used buy. You need to know what to look for to make the most of your investment.

516 VARIO PROFI SCR WITH CARGO 4X80 LOADER FENDT

It took a while for the Fendt 500 Vario series to take off sales wise. Even allowing for a well-thought-out PCP finance package, these tractors were a costly alternative to more mainstream models from the ‘big four’. There was, however, another reason for sales to take time to gather momentum.

In theory, the 500 Vario series superseded the outgoing 400 Vario models. In practice 500 Vario series tractors were not a like for like replacement. Heavier and having a longer wheelbase, the ‘new’ 500 Vario series was a physically bigger tractor with the styling and cab adopted from the larger 700 Vario series. A good number of existing 400 Vario series owners did not want to move to a 500 model in other words.

A decade on, and Fendt 500 Vario sales, mainly of the 516 Vario, picked up and with it more are now entering the used market. As to pricing, you may find a decade old 516 Vario, with 10,000 hours plus on the clock, offered for sale at £50,000 plus but, at this sort of money, you are likely to be looking at a non-Fendt dealer sale.

516 VARIO PROFI SCR WITH CARGO 4X80 LOADER FENDT

Price point: £64,750. Good price for hours, age and loader model

If you are after a tractor with a service history and the security of it having been through a Fendt dealer workshop you will need to think more in the region of prices north of £55,000, with £60,000 being a better starting point for a sound, dealer sourced, Vario 516. Strong residual values are no longer a given for all Fendt tractors but, in the case of the 500 Vario series, expect to pay a premium.

There are reasons for this. A wellmaintained Fendt Vario 500 should prove a dependable tractor with the caveat that you will need to invest in its future maintenance. These tractors are also well made. As is always the case, it is the total cost of ownership that matters, but you do need to invest wisely to make the most of the remaining residual value of the tractor when you come to move it on. Talk your usage through with a Fendt dealer or specialist and cost in servicing.

A further point is that even an entry level Power model will have a decent specification, with a key plus of a potential 55km/hr transport speed.

516 VARIO PROFIPLUS S4 FENDT

500 VARIO GEN3 EX-DEMO MODELS FENDT

WHAT’S USED

HOW MUCH DID THEY COST WHEN LAUNCHED?

In these inflationary times, it is sobering to look back over a decade at the retail prices of equipment when it was new. UK launch prices for a Fendt 516 Vario Power in 2013 were £134,878, the Profi package adding £1,445, ProfiPlus £7,486. Fast forward a decade and consider the potential retail value of one of these tractors after 10,000 hours.

WHERE TO START

Condition, service history and specification. Nothing new in the basics. Condition and service records speak for themselves. Specification is a bit harder. If you are not over familiar with how Fendt puts together its Power and Profi packages you need to dig deeper (See separate panel). Although a Fendt of any description will typically have a good ‘base’ specification, the list of options, even within the key specification packages, is extensive.

Both Power and Profi models can be offered with the Plus add-on package that, in brief, will include all the wiring necessary for GPS connectivity and ISOBUS control through the tractor’s terminal. But a Plus (or + decal on Gen3 variants) does not mean a used buy will be kitted up with guidance and autosteer. It is just an indictor that it can be fitted.

Fendt promotional material can help outline what a given tractor should have in terms of features, but AGCO can tweak the base specs according to Fendt dealer and customer feedback. Further, the ‘base’ package specifications between the first-generation Stage IIIA SCR models (2013-2017), S4 Stage IV (2018-2021) and current Gen3 Stage V (2022 to date) has seen the odd change although the basic design of the tractor has altered little. As an aside, the hue of Fendt green has been ‘brightened up’ on current models, so consider this if you are ordering touch up paint.

Apart from wear in the ‘passenger’ seat pan, the cab interior of this 10-year-old, 7,500 hour tractor is in excellent order. If the cab is in poor shape and the general appearance of the tractor is disappointing, it will be a clue to the tractor’s past care. A tractor showing north of 10,000 hours should present well as the fit and finish of these models is extremely good. The seat is pneumatic as standard but there are various alternative designs. Super Comfort pictured offers a wider range of adjustments.

Nathan Hallam, G & R Pykett Ltd, says he would struggle to list any key problem areas with Fendt 500 Vario models, but suggests a few key checks are made when looking over a used buy. “A well cared for tractor should prove a sound buy, even if it has a few hours on the clock”. >>

Fendt 500 series tractors have a strong dependability record although there are certain items that may need attention as the hours rack up. Fendt dealers will typically look out for these when a tractor is serviced or prepared for retail sale. Individually none of the items listed will be overly expensive to resolve, but costs will clearly mount if a tractor has a number that need fixing. These are key checks, particularly if considering a non-dealer buy.

KEY ‘QUICK’ CHECKS

On tractors with a front pto, it is driven via a ‘rubber’ doughnut which should be checked for cracks. Even if the front pto is not going to be used, a failing coupling should be renewed. A relatively simple and inexpensive job. Also look over the ancillary drive belts

WHAT’S USED

516 Vario

*Not sold in the UK and Ireland

The air compressor oil feed pipe (top arrow) can go brittle and should be renewed if showing signs of age hardening. If it fails or blocks it can lead to oil starvation to the turbocharger. The rubber engine mounts, mainly on SCR models, can compress, a ‘barrelled’ shape suggesting they should be renewed (lower arrow). If left, a squashed mount will see the engine sit lower in the chassis, putting stress on the transmission cardan shaft joints that in turn will wear.

WHAT’S USED

Check for play in the engine cooling fan, the bearings typically needing to be renewed at 5,000 hours. If left, the fan can move enough to cause damage to the cooling system, leading to a costly repair. Note also the pictured belt driven low pressure fuel pump shows signs of a leak. Whilst looking over the engine inspect the rubber hoses in the fuel system as these can crack and harden with age.

If the brake pedals have a lot of travel, the brakes need adjusting. The adjuster is located under the offside of the cab (next to the red handle in the picture) where it is relatively easy to get at. Brake adjustment is a part of a dealer service, so a ‘long’ pedal suggests the tractor has yet to go through the workshop. If the brakes are noisy or do not pull the tractor up ‘square’ when stopping at speed, seek advice.

KEY ‘QUICK’ CHECKS

Just like the engine mounts, the cab rubber mounts will wear over time. The cab suspension systems on 500 series tractors are not known for problems but that is not the same as suggesting high hour tractors may not need some attention. Ensure the cab does not make noises when going over bumps. There are two Conic cab suspension systems offered, mechanical and pneumatic. The latter well-liked by operators but mechanical system does a decent job. On a used buy, you will get what is fitted with little difference in price.

You will need to crawl under the tractor for this. Running between the engine and transmission is a hydraulic pipe which can start to leak. This S25P pipe has angled metal end sections that mean it is a relatively expensive item and it will also take half a day to renew. Expect a fix to cost between £500 to £750. Don’t ignore. The ‘rubber’ section is painted over, the finish cracking as you would expect. Look under the paint at the hose itself. Hard to see in the picture, but casing is starting to crack. This hose will need renewing.

Although less vulnerable to damage than on some other tractor makes, the cab steps are made from painted steel, the finish wearing off over time and with it leaving the metal underneath vulnerable to corrosion. Tidying up the steps is a typical pre-sale job for Fendt dealers as it is about the only finish weak spot on these models.

Offside cab has no door as standard, with most models sold into the UK and Ireland doing without. When looking over the tractor, look at the exhaust guards and shield clamps. These can get damaged and corrode over time.

Just because a tractor is fitted with a front linkage it does not mean it will also have a pto, so check. Power and PowerPlus models can only have a single set of front remote valves, Profi and ProfiPlus having up to two. Power tractors do not have chromed surrounds around the front lights, a useful quick spec pack identifier.

Dash of SCR and S4 models also houses buttons for lights and other controls (left). Digital display, plus revised levers on steering column, are a key change on Gen3 models.

WHAT’S TESTED

FRONT LOADER MODELS

Where fitted, the most likely Fendt loader to a used Fendt 516 tractor will be the Cargo 4X80. Although it has the same lift stats, the less common CargoProfi 4x80 has sensors fitted and will be fully integrated into the tractor’s Variotronic system. Extra features will include memo and shake functions plus working range limit, speed-dependant damping and an integral weighing system. Cargo 4X/75 more common on less powerful 512 and 513 tractors.

It is hard to do a proper check, so ask if the front axle CV joint has been looked over as the grease point is not that easy to get at and can be missed during routine maintenance. The front axle pivot bolts that hold the swivel housing can also snap, so have them checked over.

The number of remote valves will vary according to spec pack, Power and Power Plus tractors coming with 4 at rear with nothing up front or 3 at the rear and 1 up front. Profi and ProfiPlus tractors can have up to 5 at the rear and 2 up front.

A good number of 500 series tractors will have been sold with a Fendt loader, Cargo 4X/80 being the most likely variant fitted to 516 tractors. These loaders are robust but look over all pivot points and check for damage. The carriage may vary, a point to consider if you are carrying over attachments from a third-party loader design.

On both SCR and S4 generation tractors, the turbo boost hose clamp support bracket can crack, Fendt redesigning this area to resolve the problem. Look the clamp over as a small fracture is easily overlooked.

WHAT’S TESTED

Both first and second generation SCR and S4 models will share the same cab controls (above). Note the stubby multifunction joystick next to the Vario controller, this integrating well with in-house loader designs such as the popular Cargo 4X80. Third party set-ups are less common on these models. Current Gen3 tractors (below) redesigned, with several buttons that were once dash mounted migrating to the armrest. Regardless of specification or tractor age, spend time checking everything over and scroll through the touchscreen menu to ensure it functions as expected. Touchscreen problems are not unheard off.

A further point is that although most tractors are built against a customer order, a dealer buying a tractor for stock may specify it to meet the needs of their more ‘typical’ customer. A good example is the factory fit loader package.

With these points in mind, go back to basics and consider what are the must have features you want. If you can, think ahead and consider if a tractor can be upgraded. You may not want to fit guidance now but what about in future? The Plus spec package is popular for a reason.

SUMMARY

If you do an internet search for used Fendt 516 Vario tractors, you can spend hours comparing prices and specifications. This is before you consider hours, condition, tyre wear, tractor location, dealer service histories etc. Because so many of us have become used to working online, we forget the value of picking up a telephone and talking to a dealer.

As to prices, consider starting prices of around £60,000.

Sit down with a Fendt dealer to sort out what you want with a new Fendt 500 Vario and the basic package offerings of Power through to Profi Plus (or + as it now is on Gen3 models) will be easy enough to understand. More complex will be the cost of adding further options to those packages. AGCO pricing structures can make it less expensive to add certain features to a Profi tractor than to a Power and, in some cases, the available option will be of a different specification too.

As a used buyer you are spared working out the original spec choices as you get what is offered. The following lists key features of each specification package. It is down to you to check if any further options have been added.

SOUTHERN COUNTIES SALE

Southern Counties Auctioneers are holding an important dispersal sale on the instructions of Nick Knight at Switch Back Yard, Woodmancote, Chichester, West Sussex PO18 8UL on Saturday 5 July, 2025 consisting of approximately 400 lots.

Founded in 1850, H.J. Knight & Son originally provided farrier and blacksmiths services to local customers from their base at East Ashling. Post WW1 there was a growing need for experienced iron workers to repair an array of items from implements to tractors. With fourth, fifth and sixth generations of Knights the current business buys and sells tractors and machinery on a National and International basis. It also repairs all machines on site and offers in-house fabrication and a wide range of parts at its West Sussex based workshop at Woodmancote. The sale is a dispersal of the current owner’s father and grandfather’s vintage tractors and machinery amounting to approximately 30 tractors, besides implements, ploughs and sundries and enamel signs. The current business continues as normal.

Well I write this in late May and the fine dry weather is worrying for farmers let’s hope the weather breaks in the week, but not at weekends! We have so many good sales and events coming up in the next month.

Of particular interest for vintage fans is the Hobbs Parker Thompson sale and the following week’s Cheffins Desborough

sale, however another good sale that Cheffins have takes place at Northallterton, North Yorkshire which is online only from 2-19 June with the viewing day of 5 June 10-4pm. In fact you could combine this with visiting Tractor Fest at Newby Hall, Ripon, East Yorkshire over 7-8 June. This is the UKs biggest tractor rally and includes modern machinery as well and comes recommended.

GREAT WEATHER ON NATIONAL

It was thought the 36th National Vintage Tractor Road Run had hit the buffers in 2024, but Vanda and Ray Parcel from Bourn, Cambridge stepped forward to keep it going in 2025. It was over 20 years ago they staged the National in Cambridgeshire, but it never had been staged in Suffolk, which the happy couple and family stepped forward to change all of that.

However Vanda’s major sponsor pulled out and Cheffins kindly stepped forward to support the event. Their Cheffins 200 year charity raffle 1962 Fordson Super Dexta was here on the beaver tail lorry, which picked up East Sussex’s Jamie Croft and son whose Standard Fordson N hit magneto problems and the replacement was little better either, which was so disappointing for them.

In overcast weather conditions the 242 tractors headed to the start at the tight confines of Blackthorpe Barn on the Rougham Estate near Bury St Edmunds just a few miles from the A14. However you

would not know this major trunk road was far away as you were back in the heart of the countryside, in fact the road runners would traverse this road a few times along the way.

The entrants had come from all over the UK, literally from Cornwall to Galloway, Scotland, which was good to see and these were the hardcore regular National road runners. Everyone was welcomed by the family and friends as they signed on, but they were still queuing to sign in at the proscribed start time of 9.30am, so things were delayed to 10.15am before the safety vehicles and then the tractors came out onto the local roads.

In beautiful sunshine the lunchtime stop was at the Museum of Food, Stowmarket, which us older ones always refer to it as the Museum of East Anglian Life, its previous title.

The Museum was not going well footfall wise and after a three-year public consultation, in 2022 a new image was created by calling the site the Museum of Food and this has transformed visitors to

this establishment by over 50 percent.

The tractors were to be here at 11.30am, however it was 1pm when they arrived, but it gave me the chance to look around the site more closely. Now with the fresh input of cash the site should be transformed to better things. The first stage has been a success and is now moving into phase two.

Vanda and her team lead the tractors in at 1pm and an excellent crowd of visitors to the museum had come especially to see them and the shop and café was doing very good business as well. The charity raffle took place just after 3pm and the tractors hit the road again at 3.30pm travelling via huge crowds at Onehouse, Selland Hall, Borley Green, Woolpit, Tostock, Breyton and back to Blackthorpe Barn with some not arriving until after 6pm on this 36 mile run. It had been a great day for all involved, we look forward to hearing about how much has been raised by Vanda and her team for SARS999 and St Nicholas Hospice in Bury St Edmunds.

WOODHOUSE MATCH A GREAT SUCCESS

Spring ploughing matches have become the fashion over the last decade, but the very dry ground has caused havoc in certain areas of the UK this year. However one that just got through partly as rain arrived on the Thursday evening and again on early Friday to make it all possible was at the 15th Woodhouse Vintage Ploughing Match, Albourne, West Sussex on Saturday 19 April.

Some 32 quality ploughman took part here with East Kent Ploughing Champion Ken Hammant in fine form with the late Dick Theobold wide wing Fordson N and Ransomes RSLD 15 plough in the trailer class which he went on to take. Essex Ploughing Champion Paul Wylie (fifth in National last October) was here and went on to be runner-up with his immaculate Fordson N Utility and Ransomes Motac plough.

Third went to Simon Tingley who was using his lovely John Deere unstyled B having left the temperamental AR at home and after turning the fuel tap the wrong way and remembering just in time the

Ian Linch was in dominating form in the Classic Class and went on later to take the Woodhouse Plough Champion award at the end of the day

BR performed perfectly. It left Simon to concentrate on his ploughing for a change which netted him third place here.

In the classic class, third went to Peter Hill with his clean David Brown 780 with Ransomes FR plough, Phil Corp’s Ford PreForce 3000 was making good progress and finished second in the mounted class. Ian Linch was his reliable self and was to take the class with his MF35 and Ransomes FR on the back.

The Mounted class saw Tim Smith come first with his MF35 that still carries its original suppliers Lenfield badge on it. Coming on well is Simon Tingley’s son Sam with his International B275/414 outfit who was runner-up and third was taken by Chichester’s Geoff Burse with Ferguson P3 outfit. Geoff recently down sized having sold his Ford 10 series outfit at H J Pugh’s Tractor World sale February 2025 sale.

After the match people enjoyed the recently opened Woodhouse Rural Countryside Agricultural Museum, which is certainly well worth a visit if ever in the area, which also hosts weddings and other social activities including glamping.

TRACTORS SHINE AT EURO AUCTION

There was a diverse selection of tractors on offer at the April Euro Auction sale, which saw around 80 machines go under the hammer at their Leeds base. As ever bidding was quick but competitive at times, with some quality tractors being sold. In true Euro Auctions tradition, the condition of the machines varied, ranging from top notch ready to work examples to those that were in poorer condition and needed restoration.

As usual, first up was a selection of crawler tractors where a Caterpillar Challenger MT765 that was showing 9,777 hours on the clock came out on top when it sold for £22,500. Not making as much money was an interesting 2014 Kubota M8540 half-track that was showing 4,483 hours on the clock. It certainly got some attention, selling for £14,000.

From there it was onto the regular tractors, where the New Holland and John Deere name took centre stage. First to go under the hammer was an unused New Holland T7.210 that only had 24 hours on the clock. Bidding was brisk with a selling price of £90,000 being achieved, while an almost identical machine made £87,000.

But it was the John Deere name that came out on top, when a 2023 JD 6R 215 went under the hammer. With the clock showing 727 hours, it was a popular tractor with bidding reaching £121,000 making it the most expensive tractor in the sale by a long way.

Other John Deere’s also caught the eye, including a 6155M from 2021 which was showing 5,108 hours on the clock that sold for £55,000; while a 6215R from 2017 with 6,967 hours behind it went

This 2018 Case Puma 165 that was showing 3,531 hours was in good shape overall. It sold for £50,000

The best of the crawlers price wise was this Caterpillar Challenger MT765 with 9,777 hours sold for £22,500

In good condition overall the 2019 Valtra T154, 5,511 hours went on to sell for £35,000

This unused New Holland T7.210 had only got 24 hours on the clock raised £90,000

on to make £49,000.

There were several manufacturers represented in the sale, with the most expensive Case tractor turning out to be a Puma 165 that dated from 2018. Showing 3,531 hours on the clock, it sold for £50,000 while a 2019 Valtra T154 with 5,511 hours behind it went on to sell for £35,000.

There were several Claas tractors in the sale too, where a couple of 2020 Arion 610s with 5024 and 5,717 hours behind them sold for £36,000 and £34,000 respectively, while looking a little more tired was a 2017 Claas Arion 640 which made £32,500.

There were several tractors in the sale that sold for between £30,000 and £35,000. Included in this category was a 2008 JCB Fastrac 2155 which looked to be in good condition and was showing 5,146 hours on the clock. It sold for £32,000, while a couple of Massey Fergusons also caught the eye. The first was a 7718 from 2017 that had 8,982 hours on the clock and sold for £34,000; while a 6616 from 2014 in equally good condition went on to sell for £30,000. Although slightly cheaper, but worth a mention when it sold for £28,000, was a 2016 Kubota M7171 Premium KVT that had 5,832 hours behind it. It was in excellent shape, and again saw some competitive bidding in true Euro Auctions’ tradition before the hammer fell.

As ever, there were a large number of cheaper tractors were on offer too. Here a 2006 Fendt 718 with 19,098 hours behind it went on to sell for £19,000, while a 2004 McCormick MTX120 that was reputed to have only 531 hours on the on clock sold for £10,000.

3.2 MILLION TURNOVER

This was the biggest Vintage Collective that Cheffins had ever staged on its Cambridge Machinery sale site at Sutton, Cambridgeshire over 25-26 April with 3,851 incredible lots in six sales. The agricultural literature kicking Sale 1 off at 9am on Friday which saw £5,000 paid for the three Ivel black and white tractor history picture albums and history file.

On Saturday Cheffins director Oliver Godfrey got Sale 6 going at 9am with the daunting task of 481 lots ahead from post-war cars to 4x4s to lorries, steamers and then the tractors which Cheffins MD Bill King finished off at 6.39pm when he sold a spares Fordson Diesel Major E1A for £600. The top lot was the 1982 County 774 no.48607 with Delacheux wheel centres and weights and Goodyear Super Traction tyres. It had been exquisitely restored, comments were made that reproduction parts had been used in its restoration and not original, but there are two sides to every story and the tractor did stand out. When it came to

bidding things started slowly at £50,000 and it ended up at £72,000 heading to Republic of Ireland creating a record price for a grade 5+ example here.

Tom Godsmark, director of Cheffins said: “This was Cheffins’ biggest vintage sale to date, we saw over 900 bidders registered online from across the globe, with sales to the UK, Ireland, Italy, Canada, Australia and the USA to name just a few.

This auction goes to show the continuing interest in vintage and classic tractors and historic and collectable vehicles, with a strong contingent of new buyers in attendance looking to acquire collectors’ items either as an investment, for use or just for preservation.

Cheffins is celebrating its 200-year anniversary this year, and this was a fantastic way to kick off the vintage calendar for 2025. We saw a number of record prices achieved through all of the sections and are now looking forward to the next vintage sale which we will be hosting on 18-19 July.”

TRANSMISSION UPDATES FOR TAILORED OPERATION

Magnum tractors are available with a choice of a 21F/5R PowerDrive full

powershift or Case IH’s continuouslyvariable CVXDrive transmission. The Magnum 385 and 405 models can also be specified in Rowtrac configuration, which features rear track units.

Enhancements to the PowerDrive full powershift include a brake-to-clutch feature that disengages the transmission when the brake pedals are depressed,

enhancing stopping safety and precise movement when manoeuvring or attaching implements. When the brakes are released, the tractor accelerates to its previous speed, and the operator can set and choose from three ratio settings between brake force and tractor deceleration, features that bring CVT-like convenience and operating function to the full powershift.

Additionally, refinements to the tractors’ Automatic Productivity Management feature enhance the operator’s ability to fine-tune settings according to personal preference and working conditions. Through the Case IH Pro 1200 display, users can adjust the acceleration rate, make 15% speed changes to the target speed, and alter upshift sensitivity and aggressiveness rate settings, and there is also a new aggressiveness button on the armrest, all helping ensure the tractor’s operating characteristics are matched to individual tasks. Operators can also now toggle directly between field and road mode, for faster adjustment between travel and fieldwork.

HYDRAULIC UPGRADES FOR HIGHER IMPLEMENT PERFORMANCE

New horizontally-mounted electrohydraulic remote valve assemblies provide increased reliability, an improved hydraulic power curve and maximum oil retention. The power beyond fitting has been relocated for better access, and new 0.5-inch and 0.75-inch pressure relief lever-assisted couplers make

connecting and disconnecting hydraulic pipes easier. Colour-coded self-closing coupler doors with corresponding decals protect each coupler and ensure the correct connection. A second hydraulic return port for applications requiring lower pressure is a dealer-installed accessory.

The optional front hitch now features mid-mount valves with a higher-performing valve slice, providing 20% more maximum pressure-side flow (120 l/min) for enhanced lift performance. Additionally, a new dualline hydraulic trailer brake delivers smoother braking and enhanced stopping power and comfort compared to single-line systems.

NEW, SIMPLIFIED PRECISION TECHNOLOGY

Like several other Case IH models, Magnum tractors are now available with three technology packages, allowing customers to select the best fit for their operation.

Magnum tractors are also available with AccuSync, which allows multiple machines to connect within a field, sharing data such as A-B lines and coverage maps.

NEW FINER XL TRAILED SPRING TINE CULTIVATOR FOR A WIDE RANGE OF APPLICATIONS

The new HORSCH Finer XL is a versatile trailed spring tine cultivator and extends the well-known three point line to cover a wider range of uses, with the trailed technology allowing tasks to be carried out by smaller tractors.

The Finer XL can be used throughout the year and is designed to offer great results in stubble cultivation, seedbed preparation and mechanical weed control. Available in 7m and 8m working widths, its core duties are shallow tillage from 2cm to 10cm and all-over cutting. Specific adaptions have been made in the tine zone for the trailed models. The 6 bar tine zone has a 15cm tine spacing together with a proven point range providing the Finer XL with great flexibility. A 5cm or a 20cm wing point is available. All-over cutting is no problem thanks to the 52cm bar spacing and high clearance, and the Finer XL achieves an excellent mixing ratio even if there are a lot of organic residues.

A low weight and stable frame design with transport wheels in the middle ensures enormous robustness even in challenging conditions. The combination of depth control wheels in the front, contour following and a single or double packer in the rear guarantees precise depth control.

The extensive range of packer and harrow combinations allows the machine to be optimised to a wide variety of soils and conditions. In the future, larger and smaller working widths will be added to the Finer XL range as well as a version with only a harrow and without a packer.

£10 million in new Government funding for a surveillance programme will further strengthen the country’s biosecurity to protect animals, plants, people and trade.

Animal & Plant Health Agency-led project involves experts across animal, plant and aquatic health.

This innovative use of world leading technology could be vital in tackling endemic and emerging diseases of animals and plants.

The fight against pests and diseases, which can cost the UK economy billions of pounds, has been stepped up with £10m of new funding announced for surveillance projects.

The Genomics for Animal and Plant Disease Consortium (GAP-DC) project led by the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) will undertake surveillance across animal, plant and aquatic environments, using advanced genome sequencing technologies – a method that reads the complete genetic code of a living organism, including viruses, bacteria, fungi, or animals – to detect, identify and track pathogens with precision.

ADVANCED TECH BOOSTS FIGHT AGAINST ANIMAL AND PLANT DISEASE

For example, when avian influenza is found in UK poultry, genome sequencing can help confirm the virus type, trace its spread, and detect any mutations, supporting disease control measures.

The UK faces significant and growing economic threats from pests and diseases affecting agriculture, livestock, and the environment. Invasive species alone cost the UK economy an estimated £4 billion annually, while plant pathogens and pests contribute to substantial crop losses. Ash dieback is predicated to cost £15 billion to the UK over coming decades and livestock disease such as avian influenza can have devastating financial and societal consequences, and has been estimated to cost the poultry meat sector more than £100m over a two-year period.

Research to be undertaken in collaboration with seven expert partners will include a focus on increasing the speed of pathogen detection at our borders, addressing new and re-emerging disease outbreaks, developing new strategies to control and mitigate endemic disease, and an improved approach to working with stakeholders and the community. It will also investigate disease spillover from wild animals and plants – when a virus moves from one species to other, such as the transmission of the Covid-19 virus from bats to humans.

The £10 million of new funding provided by DEFRA and UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) will strengthen pathogen detection across the UK over the next two years and help protect the UK economy, as part of the Government’s Plan for Change.

NEXT GENERATION MF 1M SERIES PREMIUM COMPACT TRACTORS

Massey Ferguson has launched two new MF 1M series premium specification compact tractor models, improving efficiency, performance and comfort in the sector.

The new MF 1M series replaces MF 1500 models and comes with the latest MF family styling, which first featured on larger MF 8S tractors. Initially there will be two MF 1M series models, both with extra performance over the machines they replace. The 25hp MF 1M.25 replaces the current MF 1525, while the 20hp MF 1M.20 replaces the current MF 1520.

As well as updated styling, which includes the distinctive MF sabre, new features include a factory-fitted cab, enhanced controls, a mid pto, external pto controls for added convenience, more lighting options and new cutter decks.

SIGNIFICANT UPDATES INCREASE PRODUCTIVITY AND COMFORT

The new MF 1M series models combine performance with exceptional operator comfort, making them ideal for professional

use including within the municipal, equine and ground care industries.

CAB AND CONTROLS

The optional factory-fitted cab is a comfortable and productive working environment.

A large glass area gives excellent, 360-degree visibility, and LED work lights front and rear are standard. The equipment list also includes air conditioning, heating, a rear wiper with an intermittent setting, and an electric rear window demister.

At the rear of the cab, a cable access point protects and seals around electric cables connecting rear-mounted implements.

A hydraulic control joystick enhances efficiency and reduces fatigue when operating attachments such as a front loader. USB and 12-volt sockets power electronic devices including smartphones.

Both new tractors feature an adjustable steering wheel, ensuring users can achieve a comfortable driving position.

ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION

The MF 1M.25 engine produces 33% more torque at lower revs than some competitors with similar power, resulting in reduced operating noise levels and excellent fuel efficiency. The stepless hydrostatic transmission provides easily adjustable speeds for every task.

The MF 1M.20 features a new, ninespeed transmission, replacing the previous eight-speed gearbox, and making it easier to achieve the ideal combination of engine and travel speeds whatever the application.

CAPABLE HYDRAULICS

Designed to handle modern implements, the MF 1M.25 has 900kg rear linkage lift capacity; 300kg more than the previous MF 1525 model. The MF 1M.20 retains the same 600kg lift capacity of the MF 1520, although an upgrade to 900kg is a new option.

The main hydraulic pump provides up to 20.9 litres/min of oil flow, and up to two spool valves can be specified to supply hydraulic-driven attachments. A separate

pump produces 12.3 litres/min of oil flow for steering, ensuring that the total supply from the main pump is always available for powering implements.

MF 1M.25 models fitted with the optional cab are equipped with a dedicated joystick for enhanced hydraulic spool control.

For tractors with front loaders and similar attachments, the hydraulic spools can be mid-mounted, beneath the righthand cab door.

PTO

The MF 1M.25 has a two-speed rear pto with selectable 540/750rpm output. Fuel saving 540E is an option. The MF 1M.20 has a single 540rpm drive speed.

A mid pto with 2,000rpm output is standard on the MF 1M.25, and an option for the MF 1M.20 model.

For increased versatility and ease of use, the MF 1M.25 has three pto operating modes. These include Independent pto, Stationary pto and Auto pto. In Auto mode,

the pto rotates during forward travel and stops automatically when the tractor stops or reverses. Auto mode also allows users to select the rate of pto engagement and is recommended for tools such as fertiliser spreaders. Normal is for applications such as rotary cultivating, with quick, positive activation. Soft is designed for implements such as mowers and grass tedders.

NEW EXTERNAL CONTROLS

The MF 1M.25 specification includes a rear fender mounted pto switch, increasing convenience and safety for static pto applications.

SAFETY WITH PRACTICALITY

For operator protection, a ROPS is standard on both new models. The MF 1M.25 comes with a new, rear-mounted adjustable folding frame which maximises forward and side visibility, while the folded height can be matched to the headroom available.

UNIQUE CHOICE OF GRASS DISCHARGE OPTIONS

A new range of mid-mounted grass cutter decks brings additional options and features. For the MF 1M.25, customers have the choice of a 54 inch or 60 inch cutting width, as well as side-discharge or rear-discharge, and mulching options.

The latest drive-over cutter decks are easier to fit and remove for maintenance and save time swapping between tasks.

The MF 1M.25, with 150mm ground clearance, can drive over the decks simplifying the fitting process and allowing quicker preparation for grass cutting and other applications. Once the deck is attached, the cutting height is easily and quickly set by a simple lever.

WHAT’S NEW STREAMLINING OPERATIONS

NEW 5000 LITRE HORSCH LEEB PT EXPANDS SELFPROPELLED SPRAYER RANGE

The Horsch Leeb PT self-propelled sprayer range has been expanded with the introduction of a 5000 litre model. As with the new Leeb VT, the Leeb 5.230 PT and Leeb 5.300 PT feature a polyethylene tank, and they are powered by either a 230hp or 300hp 6.7 litre six cylinder FPT Stage 5 compliant engine, along with the new high-comfort cab. A wide range of boom widths, from 24m to 48m, is available on all self-propelled sprayers.

Based on the latest Claas cab, the state-ofthe-art cabin features an advanced A-column terminal as standard and new Leeb-designed

armrest and joystick control systems specific for crop care applications. Category IV filtration is fitted as standard and pneumatic 4-point cabin suspension is available as an option for those looking for ultimate comfort.

LEEB VT SELF-PROPELLED SPRAYER WITH VARIABLE TRACK

The Horsch Leeb VT was the first sprayer to feature the new cab. It combines variable track adjustment with the well-known performance of a Leeb PT self-propelled sprayer. The flexible track adjustment is ideal for mixed crop farms and contractors requiring varying row widths between 1.8m and 2.4m, assisting with stability in the field and manoeuvrability on the road.

THE FANTASTIC 4FS

New Holland have a proven track record of supplying high spec machines to suit the most demanding of commercial customers, but now they are offering a tractor for those who want to do more – with less.

The T4FS range of speciality tractors is the latest range to leave the New Holland plant in Turkey, and combines features of the T4 VNF range with the simplicity of the T4S and T5S Utility products. This produces a tractor with a simplified offering that would complement a fleet, or work perfectly as a mainline tractor for owners wanting to focus on the basics.

ENGINES

There are two engines available; a 3-cylinder 75hp unit requiring no adblue, or a 4-cylinder block that ranges from 90hp-110hp, using the simple adblue system that New Holland have perfected over the years. Both engines are already used in the New Holland speciality and utility ranges and provide high torque at low rpm for quiet, efficient running. Engine Speed Management (ESM) is available to offer precise engine rpm setpoints at the press of a button, perfect for pto driven applications when leaving and entering rows.

DRIVELINES

Synchro Shuttle and Power Shuttle transmissions both offer 40km/h 12x12 gear setups, with creep available as an option. Power Shuttle enables clutchless change of direction, using the steering wheel mounted shuttle lever, and features a hydraulic pto clutch for easy engagement. Pto speed options include 540, 1000, and 540E for the same productivity at lower engine rpm. Front pto can be fitted to the 90,100 and 110 models with standard 4WD axle.

AXLES

Three axle configurations are on offer – 2WD or standard 4WD on the rangepropping T4.80FS, with standard 4WD and the patented Supersteer 4WD axle available on the 90,100, and flagship 110 model. 4WD standard axle options come in either 1.15m (N) or 1.27m (F) flange-to-flange widths, while Supersteer is offered in F designation only. This results in 1.35m - 1.9m overall tractor widths, depending on tyre specification, to cater for most UK based vineyards.

HYDRAULICS

As in the premium ranges, New Holland fit dual pumps as standard- meaning one pump to cater for steering and transmission, with another larger pump dedicated to lift and remote valves. This means that oil flow will never be an issue for machines with high demands, and multiple operations can be carried out without fear of ‘robbing’ oil from functions that need it.

THE CAB

Four mechanical remotes can be specified at the rear of the tractor, while two midmount spools are available at the front of the cab. Free-flow returns are fitted front and rear as well to allow best performance for trimmers, leaf removers and the like.

The rear linkage boasts an impressive 2,800kg lift capacity, as well as a fast raise/ fast lower function, again to speed things up leaving and entering rows. Front linkage can also be specified as an option, with a 1,800kg lift capacity.

The cab carries over the same flat floor as in the premium machines, with suspended pedals mounted centrally below the adjustable steering column, for increased comfort when at the wheel for long periods.

Opening side and rear windows provide fresh air, while the industry leading BlueCab IV category 4 filtration system ensures protection from chemicals only when needed; a rocker switch electronically switches between CAT IV and CAT 2 filters to prolong carbon filter life. A monitor mounted in the pillar allows the operator to keep an eye on cab pressurisation as well as filter life, to keep protection at a maximum.

From the air suspended seat, the operator can easily reach transmission, hydraulic and pto controls, all of which are mounted on the low profile side consoles – this means greater visibility to the sides of the machine, ideal for mid-mounted tools.

A simple but comprehensive array of radio, bottle and phone storage, and USB sockets finish the cab off to create a comfortable place to spend the day whether spraying, trimming or working undervine at a price point that will appeal to growers of all kinds.

The T4 FS range is available from Haynes Agricultural across the South and South East.

HISTORIC DAY AS HYDROGEN DIGGERS GET GREEN LIGHT TO USE UK ROADS

JCB hailed a monumental Government decision to change the law to give hydrogen diggers the green light to be driven on UK roads.

Lilian Greenwood MP, Minister for the Future of Roads, has signed a statutory instrument allowing hydrogen fuelled construction and agricultural machinery to use the public highway from 29 April.

JCB Chairman Anthony Bamford – who instigated a £100 million project to develop a hydrogen combustion engine to power JCB’s machines – hailed the news as “historic”. Lord Bamford’s reaction came as a hydrogen powered JCB digger was driven around London’s roads to mark the momentous announcement – calling in at the Department for Transport to meet the Minister who made the legislative change happen.

Future of Roads Minister Lilian Greenwood said: “This shows once again we are on the side of British business, as we now allow hydrogen-powered diggers and tractors to be legally driven on UK roads for the first

time. We’re supporting the UK's Plan for Change by working closely with brilliant British companies like JCB to harness the opportunities of the net zero transition, driving innovation and creating jobs to put money in the pockets of hardworking people and secure our future.”

Lord Bamford said: “The JCB team has done amazing work to develop a hydrogen combustion engine. It has already been given resounding backing from our customers who have been evaluating the technology; they say it is simple to use and performs as well as diesel counterparts. We are delighted that the Government has now endorsed the use of hydrogen in machinery. There has been a lot of work to get to this point. It is truly a historic day for JCB and a milestone moment for the use of hydrogen as a zero-carbon fuel in the construction and agricultural machinery industries. We now have the legislation that allows hydrogen powered machines to drive on the road between sites and between farms.”

Lilian Greenwood signed the statutory instrument in early April to pave the way for an amendment to the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986 to enable the road use of hydrogen-fuelled non-road mobile machinery. Other hydrogen powered vehicles, including cars, buses and trucks were already permitted by law to use UK roads, but hydrogen-fuelled construction and agricultural machinery could not.

JCB has invested more than £100 million to produce a range of super-efficient zeroemission hydrogen engines. This pioneering project at JCB’s engine plant in Derbyshire has been personally driven by JCB Chairman Anthony Bamford, who challenged the company’s engineers to make a major breakthrough in the use of hydrogen as a fuel in a combustion engine. JCB has been operating prototype hydrogen-powered Loadall telescopic handlers, backhoe loaders and generators on sites near Birmingham and is now testing a range of equipment in partnership with rental companies and leading contractors across the UK.

CLAYDON OPEN DAYS ATTRACT VISITORS FROM FAR AND WIDE

Farmers and farm equipment dealers from across the UK have attended a series of Open Mornings and Afternoons hosted by agricultural machinery manufacturer Claydon, the European leader in direct drilling technology, at its factory and arable farm in Suffolk.

The events provided an excellent opportunity for farmers who already use the Claydon Opti-Till® System of crop establishment to improve the health of

their soils, crop performance, yields and profitability to learn more from its designer, Jeff Claydon.

At a time when government support for farming is diminishing they also gave growers who are considering changing how they establish crops an opportunity to find out how to future-proof their businesses and achieve a better work-life balance by reducing the cost and time involved to as little as 20% that of plough-

based or min-till systems.

Each session featured presentations by the Claydon team, a behind-the-scenes look at the company’s manufacturing facilities and a tour of the Claydon farm. Visitors were also able to view the latest Claydon machinery, including Hybrid and Evolution direct drills, front hopper and drill toolbar, NutriSeeder, Straw Harrows, TerraBlade inter-row hoe, TerraStar light rotary cultivator and Cambridge rolls.

The events included contributions from three guest speakers. Agronomist Dick Neale, Technical Manager for crop protection specialists Hutchinsons, discussed how Claydon Opti-Till® benefits soil health, James Lane, Digital Services Specialist for Omnia highlighted the advantages of using a standalone farm management system, while Grant James from Sea2Soil outlined how organic soil improvers can help conventional and organic farms.

This was the first time that Claydon Open Days had been held since 2019, as the events planned for April 2020 had to be cancelled due to the Covid-19 lockdown. Since then, the Claydon team have been fully focussed on developing new products to meet increasing demand from farmers throughout the world and expanding its global network of dealers and distributors.

“Following a five-year break the Claydon Open Days were reintroduced in 2025 due

to popular demand, and we have been delighted with the positive response. Visitors travelled from all over the UK to learn more about improving soil health and reducing ‘per-tonne’ production costs, while maintaining or increasing crop yields to maximise income. These aspects are critical during a challenging time for the farmers and the businesses which supply them,” said Jeff Claydon, who founded Claydon Yield-o-Meter Ltd in 1981.

“The future viability of the agricultural sector will depend on growers embracing more environmentally and financially sustainable crop production systems. Soil health is a key for farming businesses if they are to survive and thrive in an increasingly uncertain global market environment. To achieve that whilst containing costs, most will have to change the way they establish crops and look after their soils.”

With greater public awareness of the countryside and environmental issues, such as soil erosion caused by poor agricultural practices, farming businesses must review how they operate and adopt a more efficient, cost-effective and environmentally beneficial approach.”

NEW GRANGE MACHINERY COMPACT GRASSLAND LOOSENER

The 2.5m Grassland Loosener Lite (GLL Lite), which reduces soil compaction while protecting the surface of the field, has been specifically designed for use with lower horsepower tractors.

The new implement is based on Grange’s popular 3m Grassland Loosener but is built on a more compact scale to accommodate tighter spaces and smaller tractors.

Available with three or four front discs and low disturbance loosening tines, it is aimed at livestock farmers and those running mixed farms, but is also likely to prove popular with growers who direct drill wanting to lift and loosen the soil structure without creating another pass before drilling.

Rhun Jones, Managing Director of Grange Machinery, said the GLL Lite is an innovative and versatile machine designed to fill a gap in the market.

He said: “We’re launching the GLL Lite due to demand from farmers for a compact grass loosener suitable for pasture and grazing land.

“Whereas a lot of farmers really liked our 3m Grassland Loosener – which was the template for the GLL Lite – they wanted something that was easier to pull.

“Early feedback from testing has been extremely positive.

“By alleviating soil compaction and shattering and removing the plough plan, root development is significantly enhanced, more air can reach the crop roots, and drainage issues are resolved, leading to healthier, higher yield pastures.

“Thanks to our low disturbance legs and points, which provide a full width lift with minimal surface disturbance, it is able to achieve all this while ensuring the precious swards are protected.”

The GLL Lite is available with three or four front cutting discs which enhance the loosening element of the leg and eliminate surface tension.

This reduces the potential for soil boiling in front of the leg and eases the flow of trash through the machine.

Options include either Shear Bolt or Hydraulic Reset Protection, an LED Road lighting kit and a 2.5m Toothed Packer Roller.

Rhun added the GLL Lite was further proof of Grange Machinery’s ability to provide the innovative solutions that the market demands.

“We listened to what farmers wanted, designed it, and have put it into production in a very short period of time,” he said.

“It’s an extremely versatile piece of kit and we’re very excited to be launching it at Cereals 2025.”

KUBOTA ADDS VALUE LINE STEERING TO ITS GUIDANCE PORTFOLIO

Kubota (UK) Ltd has introduced an entrylevel auto-steer package to its range of guidance solutions for agricultural and ground care machinery.

Priced from £5520 (ROI €6000), and sourced through Topcon, the kit is called Value Line Steering and is available through the Kubota dealer network. A wide choice of accuracy options are available to suit operational needs and budgets, which extend from 15cm pass-to-pass accuracy down to 1cm – the latter when using an RTK signal.

The Value Line Steering kit includes the XR-1 GNSS receiver with built-in gyroscope and accelerometer, XW-1 electric steering

wheel and 10in, XC1 in-cab touchscreen terminal. Integral software has eliminated the need for a mechanical wheel angle sensor, simplifying installation and set-up.

“This new kit offers customers a pricesensitive package that delivers auto-steering functions to improve operational efficiency and reduce operator fatigue,” explains Jonathan Rook, Kubota UK’s product manager for agriculture. “The Value Line Steering kit brings affordable precision to any Kubota machine equipped with a steering wheel.”

Through Value Line Steering, operators can get access to any steering pattern required, including straight, centre pivot,

curved and custom guidance lines. In addition, more advanced features such as Steer-to-Boundary, Guidelock and Headland Turns are also available, along with basic ISOBUS implement control.

The EGNOS Value Line Steering kit is priced at £5520 (ROI €6000), while those seeking higher accuracy can opt for an RTK Value Line Steering kit, costing £7545 (ROI €8200). The latter requires a 12-month RTK signal subscription costing £650 (ROI €700).

While the Value Line Steering kit can be self-installed, an optional installation service is available, costing £695. The Topcon Value Line Steering kits come with two years warranty and two years customer support

NEW GRANTS OFFER FUNDING FOR TRAMSPREAD KIT

A wide range of equipment from slurry and digestate management specialist Tramspread is applicable for grant aid under the recently announced Farming Equipment and Technology Fund (FETF) 2025. Under the scheme, funding of up to 50% is available to eligible farmers and contractors, allowing applicants to invest in the latest market-leading slurry management and application solutions.
