SPLIT-SHAFT BATTERY POWER TOOL CHALLENGE
HUSH POWER AND MORE?
We have been working with battery-powered Stihl split-shaft KMA 120R Kombi and Makita UX01G multi-tool units to power a range of attachments with two aims. First to see if battery power units can compare with petrol-alternative in terms of performance and second to compare battery systems compatible with workshop power tools and the ‘pro’ oriented Stihl ‘outdoor tool’ AP battery systems.
Split-shaft power units, that can operate attachments as diverse as line trimmers, pole saws, hedge cutters, through to brushes, water pumps and cultivators, have the key advantage of sharing a single power unit. Additionally, because these systems can be separated into the attachment and power head, they are easier to store and transport. On top of that, purchasing one of these on its own will typically set you back far less than when purchasing each as a dedicated tool with its own power unit.
A point to note is that Stihl offer a choice of AP battery powered Kombi. It also offers dedicated battery powered tools to include twin battery brush cutters for intensive applications. It follows these will deliver differing levels of performance to suit the application. Moreover, if you are moving away from a petrol-power head to battery power, the initial investment must also include the cost of batteries. It is here where you need to factor in running costs further down the line. Charging batteries will be a lot cheaper than buying petrol which should mean batteries will almost certainly ‘pay’ for themselves over time. As a sweeping generalisation, the Stihl AP battery Kombi system outlined here targets those seeking to put the system through longer periods of hard graft. Stihl caters for less intensive use with its more affordable AK batteries. We opted for the AP system as farm users are more likely to work these tools for longer periods. Our KMA 120R Kombi employs a single AP battery that fits directly into the power unit. For more demanding tasks or those that would require an extended run time, a belt or back-pack battery system is available.
Another reason for using the Stihl AP system is that we have three AP 300 batteries that are now up to seven years old. Although we cannot verify the actual performance of these batteries, all appear to operate much the same as they did when new. We did not detect a noticeable degradation in output as their energy is depleted.
On its own, the 1.3kg Stihl HT-KM pole pruner attachment measures 1.20m in length, with 30cm/12in guide bar tackling branches of around 6in/150mm in diameter with ease. With a 1.0m extension, and the power unit held as pictured, you can easily reach up to 2.5m with both feet firmly on the ground. This will mean the operator is well back from the trimmed branch as it falls. Note the strap used to help steady the tool in work. We cleared the branch of limbs as we went to reduce the mass of material falling per cut. A clean cut is easily achieved after a bit of practice. The Makita combination did an equally impressive job, even with a small 2.5Ah battery.

We used a pair of Stihl chargers, an AL300 and AL500 (now superseded by the AL301 and AL501) to replenish the AP300 batteries, the time to complete a full charge ranging from around 45 to 55 minutes.
Makita also offers a choice of alternative cordless units including those powered by the company’s well-established 18V LXT batteries. These are available in either single 18v or twin 18v format, the latter resulting in a 36v system. Here we look at Makita’s 40v XGT battery system, higher capacity XGT batteries coming in sizes that include smaller 2.5Ah amp hour designs well suited to use with workshop tools through physically larger 5.0Ah and 8.0Ah units. Makita also offers back-pack battery systems, with these currently being the recommended set-up for those using 40V multi-tool power heads for more intensive operations.
A further Makita option will be to opt for the company’s new BL4040F tabless high capacity batteries. These have been specifically designed for high-drain machines and will offer better runtimes from a battery package that weighs the same as the previous generation 4Ah/5Ah XGT 40v batteries, but with a 4.0Ah BL4040F tabless battery delivering an impressive 2.1kw output.
Another point to consider is charge times. It will take around 28 minutes to recharge a flattened Makita XGT 2.5Ah battery using a standard DC40RA single battery charger, a larger XGT 5.0Ah battery around 50 minutes. Makita also offer a twin battery charger, the DC40RB.
As a side note, Makita ceased production of petrol powered equipment from January 2022.
Stihl HT-KM pole saw weighs in at 1.3kg and is 1.20m long, the Makita EX2650LH heavier at 2.0kg. Both have a 12in/30cm guide bar with chain oil reservoir. Stihl offer both ¼” PM and 3/8” PMM3 saw chain, Makita fitting a 3/8” chain as standard. In work we found they delivered similar impressive performance but it takes a bit of practice to get the best from them.
A FAIR FIGHT?
The goal here is not to directly compare the Stihl and Makita systems. The Makita kit we tested came with two small and light 2.5Ah XGT 40V batteries. These are about the same physical size as a 6.0 amp-hour 18v LXT Makita battery. At 0.69kg, a 2.5Ah XGT battery has a 72Wh power rating. That is ample when used in several XGT workshop tools, such as an angle grinder, impact wrench or drill.
In this outdoor power tool application, however, 72Wh is low when compared to the Stihl AP300 batteries we used. The flip side to this is that an AP battery is physically much larger and heavier. An AP300 battery weighs 1.8kg . The counter point is the battery’s 2.6 amp-hour rating with a total of 227Wh of power (the AP300 is no longer available, the current 2.9 amp-hour AP300 S, now in its third generation, having an improved 261Wh of power). All Stihl AP batteries are the same physical size, regardless of capacity.
It is important to note Watt-hour capacity
Both the Makita UX01G multi-tool and Stihl Kombi KMA 120R weigh in at 3.5kg. At just over a metre to the coupling sleeve, the Makita is a bit longer than the Stihl at 0.93m. The Makita has three no load speed settings of 0 to 5,700, 8,200 and 9,500rpm, with a separate on off switch. The tool powers down automatically after a frustratingly short 4 seconds if the trigger is not depressed. The Stihl has ECO and full speed setting with paddles on both sides used to turn it on. The Stihl will also shut itself down if it is not used, but this is long enough to prevent needing to repeatedly switch it back on. Both tools have variable speed triggers with chainsaw style top mounted safety lock that needs to be depressed for the triggers to work. The loop handle of the Stihl has a quick release clamp to enable it to be moved around without tools.
as this provides a truer guide to how long the battery will continue to give power. Even when compared to physically larger 1.3kg Makita 5.0Ah XGT battery rated at 180Wh, the admittedly larger and heavier Stihl AP300 batteries we used still have much more staying power. As previously outlined, larger 8.0Ah Makita XGT batteries are available but as these are both increasingly heavy and physically larger they will not be the sort of batteries you would want to share with an angle grinder. Even our 5.0 amp-hour batteries feel a bit hefty in these applications. The new BL4040F Makita
batteries may make a better choice, but they were not available during our time with the Makita system.
All of this means a direct comparison between the Stihl and Makita systems needs to be balanced between available battery power. As supplied, the Makita UX01G power unit and attached kit was generally lighter with either an XGT 2.5Ah or 5.0Ah battery installed. If a user needs to match the endurance of a Stihl AP system, Makita currently recommends opting for larger batteries carried in belt or back-pack and linked to the power unit via a cable.
The Makita EN402MP dual side hedge trimmer (top) has a 490mm cutting width and 35mm tooth spacing. It weighs around 2.4kg and will slice through material of around 20mm in diameter. The Stihl HL-KM hedge trimmer attachment weighs in at 2.3 kg and can slice a stem of up to around 30mm in diameter. Although similar on paper, we felt the Makita was well suited to trimming well-maintained domestic hedge, where it produced a lovely finish. The Stihl ‘felt’ more robust and was well suited to taming a hedge that needed a more aggressive cut.
DEDICATED TOOL V SPLIT POWER
Apart from brush cutters / line head ‘strimmers’, our dedicated ‘extended reach’ tool experience is limited to a telescopic hedge trimmer and pole saw. That said, both the Stihl and Makita split-shaft combinations
did not feel in any way compromised by their versatile design. Those who use a ‘cow horn’ handle brush cutter with a clearance blade will perhaps be less favourably inclined to opt for the loop handle ‘power heads’ employed here, but Stihl do offer this option within
All alloy Makita 1.0m extension is fitted with a rubber sleeve grip (top). Stihl offer a 1.0m carbon shaft extension (lower), that weighs just 0.9kg, a 0.50m alloy alternative coming in at 0.6kg. In work, these lengthy extensions clearly take some power to drive, with a noticeable delay in drive being sent from the power unit to the attachment. Only one extension should ever be fitted.
its extensive AP battery Kombi range with Makita also offering alternatives such as its dedicated UR006G ‘bike handle’ brush cutter. The loop handle split-shaft models we tried are available with grass cutting blades to fit the line heads but these designs are not aimed at those seeking a heavy brush cutter for scrub clearance work.
POWER PRUNER, POLE SAW
Using both systems with their respective pole saw attachments worked extremely well. The Makita was a bit lighter, the Stihl a bit more ‘powerful’ but both tackled everything we threw at them without complaint. The trick was to ensure the chain was sharp and correctly tensioned. It is hard to see the saw head in action from ground level and it is all too easy to tilt the saw head over to one side in work. With a little practice, fast, clean cuts are easily achieved, but you need to let the head follow a straight line.
Both Makita and Stihl supplied nominal 1.0m long shaft extensions. With these fitted to extend the working length the guide bar is further from your sight line and the tools do become somewhat unwieldly, as you would expect. This is countered by the ability to stretch out to around 2.50m. This enables overhanging branches to be tackled safely with both feet firmly on the ground.
Our Stihl Kombi was not supplied with a harness, so we worked it with the strap that came as part of the Makita kit. A strap is necessary in this job as it helps steady the tool in work and spread the weight of the tool as it is manoeuvred into position. Stihl offer a range of strap and body harness designs to work with its Kombi tools and a basic strap should now come will all Kombi power units. It is worth considering a body harness system if you are going to use one of these tools for extended periods with a power pruner or hedge trimmer.
NOTE: The 12in guide bar fitted to these power pruner attachments will happily saw through a 6in diameter branch, but we found it best to resist the temptation to tackle a large branch in one go. Working back to the trunk in short lengths made the job easier and safer, with a much reduced chance of the branch breaking mid cut or the saw head being pinched or trapped. It is also worth topping up the chain lube every time a battery swap is made. It is all too easy to overlook the chain and its condition.
HEDGE TRIMMER
The Stihl HL-KM hedge trimmer attachment weighs in at 2.3kg and can slice a stem of up to around 30mm in diameter. The Makita EN402MP at 2.4kg is a little heavier but we thought it better suited to working on material of up to around 20mm.
Makita sent us its 600mm working width roller brush, a water pump and UB400MP blower. The brush takes a lot of power to drive on rough surfaces but proved less of a drain on the batteries when sweeping a smooth grain floor and brick pavers. We have found this equally applies to the Stihl rotary brush. The Makita blower can deliver a mighty blast. The water pump is one of those attachments that you will really appreciate when you need it, the ability to empty a water trough for cleaning easily beating using a bucket.
Stihl offer a lighter line cutting head than the FSS-KM auto cut unit we tried, the latter delivering much the same performance as we would expect from a dedicated 35cc petrol ‘strimmer’. The FSS-KM head is designed to clear up to 450mm in diameter and is supplied with 3.0mm cutting line. The Makita EM408MP grass trimmer will clear up to 300mm in diameter and is supplied with lighter 2.0mm line. Both heads weigh in at under 1.5kg, with the Stihl having the edge in heavier going, the Makita suiting lighter work where a good finish may be a priority.
<< Makita offer its 40V XGT and 18v LXT batteries in a range of amp hour capacities, the latter pairing up to deliver 36v in tools to include cordless chainsaws and as a power head to drive the same accessories as the single battery UX01G multi-tool we tried. If you are an existing Makita battery system user, the UX01G multi-tool or twin LXT battery 36v DUX60Z system will be well worth considering. The latest Makita BL4040F tabless batteries should offer improved run times too.
We tackled a range of vegetation to include a tall hedge comprising a mix of hawthorn, ash, hazel, ivy and willow. We also tackled garden ornamental yew and privet hedges. Both the Makita and Stihl proved handy for tackling regularly maintained hedges, enabling high sections to be trimmed from the ground easily. For low garden hedges we found the length of these tools made them harder to use simply because you must run the tools in the horizontal. If you need to trim a long, low garden hedge a dedicated trimmer would be a better option.
Slotting in the nominal 1.0m pole extensions offered by both Stihl and Makita between the trimmer and power unit can extend the tools reach but again be aware handling this set up is eased if you use a support strap or harness. We found using the extensions with the hedge trimmers tiring.
A point to note is the Stihl blade will fold flush to the shaft for storage, the Makita EN402MP trimmer we used locking out at 90 degrees to the head. Makita offer the EN401MP as an alternative and this will also fold flat like the Stihl.
LINE TRIMMER HEADS
There is a noticeable difference between the Stihl FSS-KM and Makita EM404 MP line trimmer units we tried, the latter running a
lighter 2.0mm line with conventional bump feed head. Fitting new line involved cutting it to length and winding it onto the feed spool after the latter is removed from the cutting head. The Stihl line trimmer head was supplied with heavier 3.0mm line and fitted with an easy feed system, enabling new line to be wound in without having to take the head apart. A similar system is offered by Makita at under £20 for a direct head replacement. In terms of performance, the Stihl performed pretty much the same as a nominal 35cc loop handle petrol-powered ‘strimmer’. We found we could run for around 20 minutes before the battery was exhausted in heavy going. The Makita worked well too, but with a 2.5Ah battery it ran out of puff after around 10 minutes in similar going. The 2.0mm line was not as resilient to heavy material but in lighter going it left a good finish. With a larger 5.0Ah XGT battery the Makita ran for up to 30 minutes. With the latest Makita BL4040F tabless batteries, run times, it is suggested, could be improved by as much as 36%. Both heads can be fitted with grass trimmer blades.
ROTARY BRUSH
We have used a rotary brush with a Stihl KM100R petrol-power head and established it takes knack to get the best from these
tools. A key point is the bristles of the brush support the weight of tool. When working over a rough surface, such as the tamping lines of coarse concrete, the brush will ‘push’ back hard. You need to lean into the tool to make forward progress. It is best to work along, as opposed to across, the tamping lines where possible. This will also enable the brush to do a better job.
When switching to the battery powered Stihl KMA 120R Kombi, the AP 300 battery delivered enough power but we felt this combination was not that well matched. This was not due to a lack of power but more that the Kombi unit got rather warm and the battery cried enough after just 10 minutes or so. The Makita and its brush attachment saw the 2.5Ah battery give up after a few minutes sweeping coarse concrete. A 5.0Ah battery was much better for this task and lasted for nearer 10 minutes too. In more benign going, such as sweeping the smooth concrete in a grain store, both the Stihl and Makita brush units felt a lot happier and the batteries lasted near double the run time.
BLOWER
The Makita UB400MP leaf blower attachment we tried delivers a claimed airflow rate of 50m/s or around 15.5 cubic metres of ‘blowing power’. In work the nozzle
A petrol Stihl Kombi engine was better suited to use with a bristle brush than the AP300 powered KMA 120R Kombi over rough concreate. Driving such a brush takes a lot of energy sapping power, the Stihl battery draining to flat after about 10 minutes. The Makita 2.5Ah powered the rotary brush fitted to the UX01G was drained of energy in under five minutes but this was a stern test for such a ‘small’ battery. You need to match the power unit and accessory to the available battery power.
of the blower is close to the ground and leaf clearing performance in dry going was good with noise levels considerably better than using the same tools with a petrol-power unit. You still need to wear ear defenders but the sound does not travel in the same annoying way as a petrol blower.
The Stihl BG- KM blower is one we have
used for several years and side by side to the Makita it delivered what felt to be similar performance. The difference came with battery run times as a blower will consume a lot of energy at full chat. The AP300 battery was run to flat in about 20 minutes, a Makita 2.5Ah XGT battery crying enough after around eight minutes, its bigger 5.0 amp
XGT brother running for around 15 minutes. Makita offer three other alternative blower attachments to include the lower airflow UB402MP that will be both quieter and less demanding on the battery. Run times with this blower are claimed to be up 30 minutes with an XGT 5.0Ah battery and even longer with the newer tabless batteries.
Stihl AP batteries are offered with a range of amp hour capacities. We used the KMA 120R Kombi with now superseded AP300 batteries, current AP 300 S alternatives no doubt delivering better performance. The latter are now in their third generation, Stihl having invested in developing full power delivery tech that should mean a nearly discharged battery will continue to deliver the same power as it runs down. AP system tools include saws, hedge trimmers and blowers as pictured (right).
Despite being quieter than a petrol-powered system, blowers still generate a lot of noise at the operator’s ear, so ear defenders are recommended. When using these tools to blow a combine clean, we found their length made them more awkward to use than a dedicated blower.
We used both the Stihl and Makita blowers to blast out debris from under open canopies of a combine, but despite being able to easily reach up higher into the heart of the machine we found both blower combos could be unwieldly due to their length.
WATER PUMP
Makita suppled a water pump attachment, this having a 25mm outlet that did not fit any of our available hose runs. As it turned out we found a conventional garden hose would fit inside the coupling. Whilst this no doubt compromised the potential of the pump to deliver its claimed flow of 100 litres per minute, we used it to empty a water trough. This little job took less time than using a bucket until we reached the layer of muck we wanted to clear out.
Initially the pump needs time to prime and we soon learned to keep the unit above the muck at the bottom of the trough to stop it clogging. If you need to clear water in a hurry, such as pumping out rainwater that has flooded a grain pit, a water pump tool will be a great help.
OTHER TOOLS
The range of attachments to fit the Makita and Stihl power heads is comprehensive, with the same attachments compatible with both battery and petrol-powered systems. Makita and Stihl attachments are not interchangeable, as you would expect.
SUMMARY
If you want to share the same batteries with workshop tools, a multi-function power head from companies to include Makita make sense. Our time with the Makita system showed a single XGT battery will deliver the power needed to drive all the accessories supplied with the caveat that a 2.5Ah battery will not have the capacity for a longer run time and is certainly not the battery of choice to run a power brush. Even a 5.0Ah XGT battery found that a tough call. The improved performance for the latest tabless BL4040F batteries could make a big difference, a point to note if you are an existing Makita user.
Although we did not try one, a dual LXT 36v Makita battery power head will also be well worth a look for those using the 18v LXT battery system. The accessories to fit are just the same and they will of course fit a petrol Makita multi-tool power unit, new ‘old stock’ models remaining available from some suppliers.
The Stihl AP split-shaft KMA 120R Kombi battery system is more costly to invest in than a petrol-powered alternative despite this model being at the entry level end of the AP Kombi system. The accessories are, like the Makita’s, designed to work with a range of alternative Stihl Kombi tools, a point to note if you are already invested in a petrol-powered Stihl Kombi system. It is also worth noting that a less costly Stihl AK battery Kombi tool can power the same attachments too.
WHAT IS A TABLESS BATTERY?
In brief, a tabless battery eliminates the metal tab connectors used to link a battery's internal anode and cathode to the external terminals. A tabless battery connects the electrodes directly across their entire edge. This is claimed to produce a more uniform current flow, with reduced electrical resistance, improved thermal management and faster charging and discharging.
Now to petrol versus battery power. The latter are, hands down, more pleasant to use. Three stand out plus points include lower noise levels, smooth running and lack of exhaust fumes. In terms of power, both the Makita and Stihl systems we tried delivered pretty much the same performance as the 33cc petrol Stihl Kombi tool we have used for years. The only exception was the power brush, this working well enough with battery power but sucking the batteries dry of power too quickly for anything other than light work. Regarding run times, a battery powered system will need more than a single battery and the battery capacity you choose will clearly play a big part in how long the tool will run between charges. With the Makita system, you will no doubt share batteries with workshop tools and this will likely determine the size of battery available. With several XGT batteries on hand, you may well find you have enough ‘energy’ stored up for a fair amount of work.
With the Stihl AP system it is different in that the key battery sizes on offer include the AP 500 S. This has a 337Wh of energy sufficient to not just extend run times but also work the more powerful Kombi power heads that are available with ease. The downside? A VAT inclusive retail price not far shy of £400. The plus to that? The battery will soon save that in fuel if used extensively. Overall running costs for battery tools should be lower, with much reduced need for servicing too.

BRILLIANT TRACTORFEST
Michael Tulip with his one owner 1974 Zetor Crystal 8011 in so original condition that worked near Stocksfield, Northumberland for its life which he bought in 2016.
There were over 560 Ford and Fordson tractors at Newby Hall this year.
Yes this is not a made up roller, but created by the famous Devon company Twose. They went on to make approximately 500 based on a Ferguson TE-20 or Fordson Dexta (the tractors cost extra). They were exported all over the world (there are three known examples in New Zealand). This example worked for a Yorkshire cricket club for decades and has been sympathetically restored.
This year’s original Tractorfest took place on 6-7 June at Newby Hall, Ripon, Yorkshire and what a fantastic show it was. Now in its 19th year there were 1,320 tractors and 28 vintage motor rollers.
The ‘Made In Scotland’ feature saw Nuffield and Leyland tractors besides implements and such like made north of the border. Then there was ’80 Years Of Zetor’ and there was just on a 100 examples on site of all types of this wonderful make that’s hit hard times today, but at one stage was very

popular in the UK particularly in the 1980s. Besides all this there were 350 stationary engines, 160 cars, 135 motor-cycles and 300 commercial and military vehicles along with 120 horticultural classic and vintage machines and over 34 classic caravans.
As part of the founding team of this event when I staged the Ford and Fordson Expo I am so pleased that from 3,000 people attending that first show there are now over 17,000 people attending this event, held in the beautiful parkland site. There is also a fine garden and a miniature railway to enjoy for

the family, which on high days and holidays gets its steam locomotive out and uses it. It was a pleasure for me to be asked by The Friends of Ferguson Heritage to present the ‘What’s In A Box’ show twice on Saturday (70 years of Ferguson FE35 grey and gold presentation). The special guests to cut the ribbon on the Saturday were Oliver Godfrey machinery director of Cheffins and Peter Wright of Yorkshire Vet TV fame whose veterinary practice is the former James Herriot practice at Thursk.
The weather was typical Newby Hall, ‘off and on’, but with so much to see and do besides various things for children to enjoy including a vintage fun fair the event was a huge success. Some events like to use the title Tractorfest and only have at most 400 tractors on site, well this is the real thing and is certainly an eye opener. If you have never been before do make a date next year as its not to be missed and two of the features are John Deere and steel wheeled tractors.
They came in all shapes and sizes to the show including this 1949 Massey-Harris 744 Perkins P6 with Scottish Aviation cab.
There were over 250 Internationals here on the three club stands on the fine site.

A rare sight in the UK on the Tunstall Tractors stand a new Hurlimann tractor (Deutz-Fahr) which was a pioneer Swiss diesel tractor manufacturer for decades.

MASSEY FERGUSON IS TOPS AT EURO AUCTIONS
There was a varied selection of tractors at the June Euro Auctions sale held on Wednesday 3 June which saw around 70 machines go under the hammer, with several manufacturers being represented. As ever, bidding was brisk from prospective buyers on site competing with those on the internet.
As ever, starting things off were some crawler tractors, where an undated Yanmar CT55 that was fitted with a hydraulic tilting blade made its way onto the selling ramp.
Looking the part, this 2019 New Holland T7.210 was showing 8924 hours on the clock. In good overall condition, it went on to sell for £33,000
Looking to be in great condition, this 2022 Massey Ferguson 4709 4wd had only got 954 hours on the clock.
Unsurprisingly it got the bidder’s attention and sold for £23,500
Showing 510 hours on the clock and in solid looking condition, it went on to sell for £8,000 after which the general tractors were offered for sale.
First up was an unused Massey Ferguson 7724S Dyna-6 that was fitted with front weights and only eight hours on the clock. Obviously, it was in top condition and saw the hammer fall at the selling price of £76,000, making it the most expensive tractor in the sale. Although nothing else came close to that price, there were some
The most expensive John Deere inn the sale was this 6210R from 2014. With 9991 hours on the clock, it sold for £35,500
The most expensive tractor in the sale was this unused Massey Ferguson 7724S Dyna-6 that had only eight hours on the clock. It sold for £76,000
other quality machines on offer, including a couple of Valtra tractors.
The first was a N175 that dated from 2022. Fitted with front linkage and PTO as well as a G6S loader, this example was showing 2,292 hours on the clock and was in excellent condition. That sold for £54,000, while a Valtra T155 from the same year with 1,023 hours behind it made a respectable £46,000.
Also catching the eye was a 2019 Fendt 718 that was also fitted with front linkage and PTO. Again, in very good condition, despite
This 2016 New Holland T7.315 was fitted with front weights & linkage and had 5922 hours on the clock. It sold for £45,000
This very tidy 2017 Kubota M7131 four-wheel drive had 7175 hours behind it, and went on to sell for £23,000
Complete with a LA2254 loader, this 2015 Kubota M135GX-S-II had 5014 hours on the clock and went on to sell for £20,000

having 9,932 hours behind it, this tractor managed to sell for £47,500 while not that far behind was a 2016 New Holland T7.315 that was showing 5,922 hours on the clock – it sold for £45,000 grade 10. That wasn’t the only New Holland in the sale. Also looking the part was T7.210 that dated from 2019, it was showing 8,924 hours on the clock and sold for £33,000 while a 2018 New Holland T7.225 with 9,215 hours behind it made £32,000.
The John Deere name was also wellrepresented with a good selection of machines on offer. The most expensive turned out to be a 6210R that dated from 2014. In great condition despite having 9,991 hours on the clock, it sold for £35,500, while not that far behind was a 2016 JD 6155M that had 15,603 hours behind it, sold for £35,000. Again, in very good condition, the 6175M went on to sell for £32,000 while a tidy 2016 John Deere 6130R made £31,000.
There are usually some tidy Kubota tractors on offer at Euro Auctions, and this sale was no exception. The first was a M7131 fourwheel drive that dated from 2017 which was showing 7,175 hours on the clock. That sold for £23,000 while a 2015 Kubota M135GX-S-II 4wd that was fitted with a LA2254 loader and had 5,014 hours behind made £20,000. Also looking the part was a 2015 Case Farmall 115U PRO four-wheel drive that had 7,500 hours on the clock it sold for £22,000. Actually it was fitted with a Wessex RMX-560 PTO driven single axle draw bar three-gang mower topper, although that was sold separately, and made £4,000.
Moving on, and apart from the afore
This Massey Ferguson 390-4 was fitted with a Quicke 640 front loader and bale grab and had a reported 5192 hours on the clock. In good condition, it sold for £8,250
mentioned Massey Ferguson 7724S Dyna-6, there were also a good selection of MFs on offer. These included a 2022 MF 4709 that had only 954 hours behind it that sold for £23,500. A 6612 from 2016 that was fitted with a MF 956 loader made £22,500 and a 3075 from 2015 went for £18,000.
There were some older machines going under the hammer too, many of which were fitted with a loader to help lift their selling prices. First up was a Massey Ferguson 362 with a front loader and bucket that had a reported 1,961 hours behind it. It sold for £10,250, while a MF 3060 with a Quicke 4300 loader and 5,793 hours on the clock made £8,750 and a 390-4 with Quicke 640 front loader and bale grab went for £8,250.
Even older was a 1969 MF 165 two-wheel drive complete with loader and bucket that sold for £3,250, while an undated 135 unable to make it to the selling ramp due to an engine fault made £2,750.
And finally came arguably the best collection of Ford tractors in a Euro Auctions sale for a long time. First up was an undated 7740 four-wheel drive that was in excellent shape. Showing 2,760 hours on the clock, it sold for £12,000 while a Ford 6610 two-wheel drive with 1,698 hours behind it made £10,000.
Other Fords caught the eye too, including a more work-worn 5640 four-wheel drive with SL4S loader and bale grab which made £9,750, while another 5640 four-wheel drive with 2,349 hours on the clock sold for £9,500. It certainly was a varied sale, with some surprises thrown in for good measure. Long may it continue.
Also in good condition was this 2016 John Deere 6130R that found a new home when it sold for £31,000

THE LATE TIM MATTHEWS COLLECTION
A rare baby the updated 1951 Loyd Dragon DS crawler with Dorman diesel engine raised £7,000
Massey-Harris Pacemaker is a fine British example and sold for £5,600 grade 5
The big number at the Matthews sale was the UK used 1937 Lanz D8506 with winch at £30,000
On Friday 15 May Cheffins completed the online late Tim Matthews Collection sale held in Hertfordshire.
Tim passed away some time ago now and the family kept together his wonderful collection. As brickmakers by trade the buildings where the collection was housed are just wonderful. I have taken a number of parties here to enjoy the collection and a number of the family travelled on our tours over the years. Although this was a vintage style sale a number of record prices were achieved along the way.
This sale started with the best price paid so far this year for a 1938 Ferguson Brown A YSV974, with log book, in grade 4 condition at £27,000. But the next lot continued the downward trend unfortunately of the Field Marshall family when a lovely well restored orange 3A with local history sold for just £11,500. However an excellent record was achieved with the next lot for the genuine UK used Lanz D8506, CF6925 with Hesford winch in grade 5 condition this machine sold for £30,000 and has stayed locally.
The wide track Massey-Harris GP in a red livery grade 4 went on to sell for a good £12,500 in running order like so many of the collection. The hard to find, but well restored 1951 (not 1946) Loyd Dragon DS Dorman diesel engine crawler sold for £7,000 it needed some tickling and is out on the rally scene (a petrol version was offered in 1946 with a Ford flathead V8 engine and exported to Australia and New Zealand). Another record price went to the 1957 John Deere 420C crawler in good order at £7,800 and the biggest surprise was the Austrian 1950 Steyr 80 this type of single-cyinder tractor was made from 1949-64, it sold for a record £7,400. All told an excellent sale from this much respected collector.
• 1945 John Deere D styled early example 5 ............................. £3,800
• 1954 David Brown 25C (engine stuck) 4...................................... £3,700
DEUTZ-FAHR INTRAC 6.60 HEADS TO HOLLAND FOR £61,500
At Home Farm, Hale on the edge of Liverpool, well known collector and Coast to Coast Road Run organiser David Harrison decided to thin out his collection and classic farming fleet as he semi-retires. The results achieved on Wednesday 27 May by Cheffins were exceptional in one way or other.
David has been involved in tractor preservation for many decades as well as a hard working farmer in a tough area of the UK and has chaired many a tractor club over the years with great skill.
Some 60 tractors and two classic combines were offered plus lots of implements and more. Cheffins picked the right tractor to start with when the 1975 Massey Ferguson 188 JMT698N with Sanderson frame, Flexi cab, PAVT wheels all in original style was got away at £17,000. It was one of 17 Massey Fergusons offered here which did well for what they were; the Massey Ferguson 148, MMA598L with 8,137 hours raised £15,500 while another 148 PBE997M with V5c raised £8,200. An ex Republic of Ireland 1955 Porsche Allgaier AP16 which was previously restored in Ireland sold for £16,500.
The big number in the David Harrison sale was the 1989 Deutz-Fahr InTrac 6.60 with 9,840 hours sold for a record £61,500
This clean 1994 JCB 185 with 2,985 hours was knocked down at £38,500
Looking cool is the 1975 Massey Harris 188 MP with Sanderson 10/30 frame sold for £17,000
1995 Case International 5130 Maxxum Plus 4 raised £16,000 with 5,665 hours the sister tractor with 2,000 more on it sold for £17,000
As for the 1994 JCB Fastrac 185 with 2,985 hours looking good, it sold for £38,000 and the earlier 1993 JCB 145 Fastrac 4,253 hours made £19,500. When it came to the John Deere’s we saw a record price for the dinosaur original 1963 5010 LCL323A with V5c at £20,000. However another record was the very early John Deere 4020 FAD263C with V5c grade 4 sold for £21,000. As for the original style 4020 CKS192C that changed hands at £8,600.
David certainly liked his Deutz-Fahr tractors and the five or so did well. The highlight was the late type InTrac 6.60 turbo with 9,840 hours selling at a mighty £61,500 a record here. A most interesting McCormick-Deering W9 with a Perkins P6 conversion was got away at £5,600 and the David Brown Cropmaster p/p NTF600 with V5C sold well at £3,800. In fact, generally, David Brown prices have picked up this year across the board. However the Field Marshall Series 2 GPU948 with Scottish Aviation cab grade 4 carried on the same trend for this makes realignment at £7,800. We have only scratched the surface with this excellent sale.
The Porsche Allgaier AP16 restored in the Republic of Ireland was sold at £16,500 we are not too sure about the colour of the wheels
2021 Deutz Fahr 5125 with front linkage with 7,483 hours and grass tyres £35,000
Doing very well here at £53,500 and £55,500 was the pair of 2011 Case-IH 195 Puma’s with 1,396 and 1,494 hours
There were two 1995 Case-International 5130 Maxxum Plus 4 here with 5,665 and 8,646 hours respectively and raised £16,000 and £17,000
1993 JCB Fastrac 145 with 4,253 sold here for £19,500
2014 Same Virtus 120 with 5,665 sold for £29,500

The Mourne Ford 7000 is something else with the correct UK specification cab.
HJ Pugh is to stage a large high summer vintage and classic sale at its HQ site at Ledbury on Saturday 1 August. This will feature the Mourne Collection P2 that has been brought over from Northern Ireland right now and also the just excellent David Leighton Collection made up of some lovely prairie tractors including an award winning and stunning Massey Ferguson 1150.
The Mourne Collection P2 arrived in early June at HJ Pugh’s premises and features a stunning line of mostly excellent, clean or restored Ferguson implements besides some original clean and concours restored tractors from Ferguson, Massey Ferguson and Ford all looking brilliant in their own way especially the Ford 7000. The sale also includes a most interesting Ferguson diesel industrial and a Reekie Ferguson conversion and some other gems.
Looking at the very clean and original Ferguson implements that will be in the 1 August sale.
MOURNE
P2 AND LEIGHTON COLLECTION TO STAR
Moving to the David Leighton collection, his Massey Ferguson 1150 ‘Big Harry’ featured on the 2008 premier issue of Classic Massey and Ferguson Enthusiast magazine and has been gone right through from its Perkins V-8 135hp engine and so much more. It has been hardly used since its restoration and David has a MF 880 five-furrow plough to go with the tractor as well. The 1150 was fully sandblasted and painted and has held up so well being properly covered and looked after. Also in the sale is David’s lovely Massey Ferguson 135 PDO972J, which has such a good history attached to it.
But that is not all as there is a lovely
The Ferguson dung spreader is another well presented implement.
John Deere 5020 all restored and looking good here. But there is also a fine line of classic Case series tractors including the 1094 four-wheel drive and a mighty 2290 two-wheel drive rowcrop both so original which were made between 1978-83. The 2290 features the 8.3 litre six-cylinder engine. Then there is a superb all together red Case-IH 2294 a type made from 1984-88 with its 154hp engine this is a very hard tractor to find on the sale field. This is just some of the tractors coming up here. With what’s on offer in late July there are some interesting machines to add to the collection I am sure.
Seen in the HJ Pugh showroom is the three classic Fords to be offered on 1 August.
CHEEFINS VINTAGE COLLECTIVE
Over Friday 17 July and Saturday 18th July 2026 Cheffins are to stage the middle of the three vintage collectives. The first turned over a staggering £2.4 million so it will be interesting what is offered in July. All sections are filling up well for the Friday literature, model and automobilia sections remembering in April £9,600 was paid for the Ferguson System salesman’s demonstration clockwork model, ploughs and track in a genuine box all made by Mills Bros of course.
For the three Saturday sales things are jogging along well with a wreck of a Ferguson Brown A entered in the sale already and will be something for the keen Ferguson fans to get their teeth into that is for sure. Other delights include a Roadless E27N DG4 halftrack with amazing overhead hedge cutter equipment. Arrived from Canada is the lovely
Ford Force 5000 looking so cool and the 1965 County Super-6 no. 14705 that looks a treat with the bonnet and nose lining up well together, a problem normally with this type of tractor. There are other County’s entered in this sale as well as a host of Massey Ferguson and Ferguson tractors as well as a good selection of spares.
However also offered are a number of John Deere tractors including a 4020 MFD (mechanical four-wheel drive) a rare tractor to get one’s hands on these days as well as a number of 1950s two-cylinder machines and some clean 1990s examples as well. Do make a date and go along if you have never been to these events on the Sutton showground they are an experience not to be missed and some say are more interesting than attending a tractor rally –do go and see for yourself.
The wreck of a Ferguson Brown A is something for you to get your teeth into.
County Super-Six is in town this time and a very straight tractor it is.
Low hours Ford Force 5000 has arrived from Canada and is a treat.
John Deere 4020 MFD four-wheel drive is a hard tractor to find these days.

Leading agricultural auctioneers, Cheffins, featured in series five of Clarkson’s Farm, and are also appearing in episode six (released on 10 June 2026), after being called in to value and sell one of Jeremy Clarkson’s most famed pieces of kit, his 350-horsepower 2016 DeutzFahr 0740 tractor.
Approached by the programme’s producers in March 2025, Cheffins handled the sale of the tractor, which had been consigned directly from Diddly Squat Farm and featured prolifically throughout series four of the TV show. It went under the hammer at the Cheffins Monthly Machinery Sale at Sutton, near Ely, on Monday 9 June 2025, drawing a crowd of Clarkson fans.
Having first visited Diddly Squat to assess the tractor, machinery director Oliver Godfrey provided a valuation in April before entering the tractor in the monthly Cheffins Machinery Sale commenting, "It’s not the easiest thing to sell in the world, I’ll be honest, but I would look somewhere in the region of £50,000-£60,000.” To which Clarkson replies “It’s quite a lot less than I paid for it £80,000.” However, the tractor itself proved a magnet for attention on sale day, modified by Clarkson himself with a bespoke cab lift and Lamborghini branding, it drew strong interest from both serious buyers and Diddly Squat fans. With 3,180 hours on the clock, it sold finally for £70,500 to a UK-based regular buyer, following a total of 62 bids.
Clarkson, accompanied by farming contractor and co-star Kaleb Cooper, attended the sale at Cheffins' purpose-built auction facility, with filming taking place throughout the day. The pair toured the 40-acre saleground, discussing the diverse range of machinery on offer. Clarkson remarked: "Up for sale was everything from high-end tracked tractors to characters from Pixar. When the hammer finally fell at £70,500, both Clarkson and Cooper appeared delighted with the result. Summing up the outcome, Clarkson joked: "Well, it was a financial hit, but it wasn't a financial kick in the nuts."

MCCONNEL BRINGS TELE-VFR CAPABILITY TO THE 77-SERIES POWER ARM RANGE
McConnel has introduced Tele-VFR as a new option for its latest 77-Series Power Arm range, bringing advanced telescopic Variable Forward Reach capability to the mid-range sector for the first time.
Previously reserved for McConnel’s flagship heavy-duty machines, Tele-VFR combines the visibility and operator comfort benefits of Variable Forward Reach with the added flexibility of telescopic arm movement. Its introduction to the 77-Series gives contractors, local authorities and farmers access to a highly versatile armset on a more compact machine platform.
The new 77-Series Tele-VFR armset has been completely redesigned to suit the machine, delivering the strength, movement and precision required for professional verge and hedge maintenance while maintaining the compact profile expected from the range.
A key development is the use of a phased ram system to maintain the correct flailhead position as the arm is moved forward
and back. This replaces the mechanical parallelogram system used on larger machines, helping to reduce weight while increasing the available range of movement.
The flailhead angling ram has also been repositioned to improve the overall arm profile and support greater manoeuvrability in challenging working environments.
Tele-VFR technology allows the operator to bring the cutting head further forward for improved visibility, helping them keep the flailhead within a more natural field of view while maintaining awareness of the road and terrain ahead. This can support higher working speeds, greater precision and improved comfort over long operating days.
The telescopic extension also provides added reach when required, enabling operators to work more effectively around roadside obstacles, signs, posts and street furniture. In confined lanes or restricted environments, the arm can also be positioned behind the tractor wheel for close-in cutting, giving operators greater
flexibility where space is limited.
The 77-Series has been designed for professional users who need strength, performance and reliability in a compact package. The range features largerdiameter pivot pins, providing a 48% increase in bush contact area for improved durability, alongside McConnel’s in-house designed 70hp hydraulic system as standard. Customers can also specify an optional 85hp hydraulic system for increased power and flow.
Additional features include a 180 litre hydraulic tank, high-capacity oil cooler, electric rotor control, soft-start rotor engagement, LED road lighting, redesigned hydraulic tank and a two-piece rear guard for improved service access. An integrated debris blower, mounted within the rear guard, is also available.
Built in the UK at McConnel’s Ludlow facility, the new 77-Series Tele-VFR option is available to order now through McConnel’s dealer network.
JCB’s familiar Fastrac concept is wellknown for its unique combination of power, traction, speed and four-wheel steer agility, and for its signature axle suspension front and rear.
This set up not only provides the best operator comfort over long working days but also ensures sure-footed field work and road travel – legally at up to 66kph thanks to the suspended axles and a braking system to commercial vehicle standards featuring large outboard disc brakes.
The new Fastrac 6300, however, delivers more power in a relatively compact and manoeuvrable package ideally suited to arable farming cultivation, drilling and transport operations.
Features include a new engine and stepless transmission combination performancematched to deliver smooth speed transitions and efficient power and torque delivery. Up in the cab, the highly-configurable touch-screen iCON control centre offers ISOBUS implement operation and comprehensive factory-installed precision farming features.

Heavy-duty axles, 500mm-wide tyres and hydraulic power braking to both axles are part of the upgrade package, while a 14% increase in flow to 160-litre/min provides even faster cycle times.
For the ultimate in bulk handling for fertiliser and grain stores, JCB’s range of loading shovels is unmatched in the number of models and choice of specifications to suit mainly hardsurface and indoor operation or outdoor work on silage clamps and muck heaps.
The JCB 437 Agri is a 15-tonne, 4.7 tonne payload machine best suited to store work, with 195hp, a five-speed powershift transmission and heaps of hydraulic power for fast loading and re-handling cycles, whether materials are in-bound or being out-loaded from storage.
2027 COMBINE UPDATES ACROSS
T5/T6, S7 AND X9 RANGES
For model year 2027 (MY27), John Deere is rolling out a comprehensive package of updates across its T5/T6, S7 and X9 combines. The latest developments focus on productivity, in cab convenience, slope performance and advanced automation, supporting operators in achieving a lower cost of harvest under increasingly diverse field conditions.
T5 AND T6: PROVEN AUTOMATION AND NEW IN CAB ADJUSTMENTS
Predictive Ground Speed Automation (PGSA) is being introduced to the T5 and T6 combines for MY27, following its successful launch on the S7 in MY25. The system controls the combine's ground speed based on crop height and biomass measurements taken pre-harvest from satellite scans and from on-the-go measurements made by cab-mounted cameras, such as down crops or dense weed patches. Machines equipped with PGSA will also be capable of using an operator-defined crop throughput target as an additional automation setting. When enabled, PGSA with throughput will intelligently link ground speed with grain quality to help optimise harvesting performance and allow more dynamic speed adjustments to keep grain loss within acceptable limits.
Jonathan Edwards, John Deere Go To Market Manager, said: “This is technology that no other brand can offer, and we have seen how much of an impact it can have on productivity during one of the busiest times of the year.”
Remote adjustment of booster bar and separator grates
MY27 brings new remote adjustment capabilities to the T5 and T6 threshing and separation system. The booster bar and separator grates can now be adjusted directly from the cab, allowing operators to react immediately to changing crop conditions without stopping or leaving the machine. This improves productivity while keeping the cab clean and reducing downtime.
NEW UNLOADING AUGER OPTIONS
Two new unloading augers expand the T5/T6 range. A 6.10m rigid auger improves compatibility with wider headers, while a 7.30m foldable auger for T5 models addresses markets with stricter road homologation requirements and provides a good match for 9.1m platforms.
S7: IMPROVED PERFORMANCE ON SLOPES
Active Slope Adjustment (ASA) is now available as a full specification option across all S7 combines. Using terrain data from the StarFire™ receiver, the system automatically adjusts the active belt speed to level crop flow to the cleaning shoe on side slopes. This results in more even material distribution and effectively doubles cleaning shoe performance without compromising grain quality or capacity.
EXPANDED SIDEHILL OPTIONS
For MY27, the S7 range offers four sidehill configurations, allowing customers to select the right solution for their operating conditions. Options include the Sidehill Kit, Active Slope Adjustment and
HillMaster™, providing solutions for slopes from gentle undulations to more demanding hillside terrain while maintaining grain cleanliness and reducing losses.
X9: HIGHER CAPACITY AND NEW FEEDING OPTIONS
The X9 combine range gains a new HDX 50 header for MY27. With a working width of 50ft (15.2m), the new header significantly increases feeding capacity, supporting the high throughput capability of the X9 and improving operator comfort by maintaining smoother crop flow at high harvesting speeds.
New grain handling options further enhance the X9’s productivity in high-yielding crops. A larger 19,400-litre grain tank option is now available, increasing productivity in the field with fewer unloading stops. Also, a new 10.7m unloading auger supports controlled traffic farming and improves unloading efficiency in wide working widths.
MY27 also introduces new threshing and separation configurations for the X9, including TRU THRESH™ concaves. The updated design improves modularity and simplifies crop changeovers, for instance by controlling concave and separator covers from the cabin.
TECHNOLOGY UPDATES ACROSS THE COMBINE PORTFOLIO
For MY27, John Deere is introducing revised technology package structures across all combine series. The available Select, Premium
and Ultimate packages differ by machine family, allowing customers to tailor automation and guidance functionality to their operational needs while clearly differentiating capability levels between T5/T6, S7 and X9 combines.
AUTO UNLOAD: A STEP TOWARDS AUTONOMY
Auto unload is now available on S7 and X9 combines. The system automatically guides the tractor and trailer during unloading, ensuring consistent grain distribution while reducing operator workload and stress. Live fill monitoring provides real-time feedback, allowing the combine operator to focus on crop throughput even while unloading on the move.
Harvest Settings Automation continues to evolve for MY27, expanding the number of compatible crops. New additions include oats, sunflower, triticale, rye, peas, lentils and rice, allowing automatic optimisation across a wider range of harvesting conditions and regions.
“With the model year 2027 updates, we are making our combines more intuitive, more connected and more adaptable to harvesting conditions in the field,” concluded Jonathan Edwards, Go to Market Manager Combines for Europe. “By combining proven mechanical upgrades with smarter automation across all series, we are helping customers harvest more efficiently, with greater confidence and lower cost of operation.”
SEPARATE SLURRY TO MANAGE PHOSPHORUS
“The pressure on farms to better manage phosphorus can be addressed using separation,” said Andy Hayhurst, from Vogelsang. Andy Hayhurst continued: “Separation is not just about reducing the strain on storage but can also be an important measure to reaching phosphorus management guidelines. DEFRA has clearly outlined its plans to reduce total nitrogen, phosphorus and sediment pollution from agriculture into the water environment by at least 40% by 2038. While the process has been slow to take hold, there are movements being made to put additional pressure on farms, especially those near rivers and watercourses.”
Using a separator such as Vogelsang’s XSplit creates a solid fraction with approximately 40% dry matter. The majority of phosphorus in slurry is removed into this solid, making it more manageable.
“Moving unseparated slurry costs more and, with the rise in fuel prices, fertiliser
prices and the call from government to better manage phosphorus, there seems no better time to be taking advantage of separation technology,” he added.
Concentrating phosphorus in the solid fraction leaves the liquid fraction with nearly all the soluble nitrogen (ammonium, nitrates, nitrites) and potassium. This allows for different application rates for the solid and liquid fractions to better match soil and crop needs. It can also reduce the cost of transporting the phosphorus solids over greater distances.
“For farms with land spread over wider areas, there are significant cost benefits to managing phosphorus through separation. Similarly, farms with a variety of crops can better manage phosphorus application by top dressing with a solid fraction that is rich in phosphorus for crops and soils that will benefit, and using the liquid fraction in areas that could be more prone to leaching phosphorus,” said Andy Hayhurst.
Recent extreme weather conditions in the
UK have led to significant surface run off and soil leaching. By soil and slurry testing, farms can better understand the implications of slurry application to overloading fields that may, subsequently, pose a risk to nearby water.
“More accurate application is needed to improve soil health, make better use of natural and synthetic fertilisers and reduce the risk of phosphorus entering rivers and bodies of water. Separation is one way that farms can better manage slurry, understand its nutrient value and apply it more efficiently to ensure soils and crops are receiving the optimal amounts of N, P and K,” he concluded.
NEW DIGITAL TOOL HELPS CONSULTANTS MANAGE SFI
Environmental schemes inevitably create more administration for farmers and advisers, so many consultants are turning to digital tools to help manage records.
The Farm Consultancy Group (FCG) recently began using Regeno’s Farmwalk app, which was designed to streamline record-keeping. It allows farmers and advisers to capture photos, voice notes and other evidence while in the field and automatically links them to relevant scheme requirements. It also supports Welsh and Scottish schemes as well as standards like Red Tractor and LEAF.
FCG uses the platform to support its stewardship management service, which helps farmers manage their Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) and Countryside Stewardship agreements. “We were getting more and more requests from the Rural Payments Agency asking for field records and evidence to support stewardship claims,” said Steph Emmerson, director at FCG. “Our systems worked, but they were manual and time consuming. We knew there had to be a more streamlined way of managing that information.”
The consultancy team helps clients by collecting evidence like grazing records, photographs and seed invoices to ensure compliance requirements are met.
“We were very good at getting clients into schemes, but we knew there was more we could do to support them with the ongoing record-keeping and evidence collection,” said Steph. “Having everything in one place makes the process more streamlined and professional in terms of the service we can offer our clients.”
The platform also supports consultants during client meetings by recording discussions and tracking follow-ups. “Previously I would have a meeting, make
notes and then later write up a summary,” Steph explains. “Now I can almost send that summary during the meeting, which saves a lot of time and makes sure nothing gets missed.”
Kimberley Broughton, farm consultant at FCG, said the system is already helping reduce the time spent on routine administration. “Previously we would collect documents from clients, take photos on farm and then spend time filing everything back at the laptop,” she said. “It was quite time consuming, but the app makes the process much quicker and easier to manage.”
The platform can also highlight any missing records, helping consultants ensure evidence requirements are met before inspections or compliance checks. “It flags up anything
that is missing, so you can quickly chase it or upload it,” said Kimberley. “It just gives you that confidence that everything is there and organised if you need it.”
As well as supporting environmental schemes, the consultancy believes digital tools like this could have wider applications across other areas of farm compliance. Regeno also includes a dedicated health and safety module and a Nitrate Vulnerable Zone (NVZ) calculator, helping broaden its use beyond stewardship administration alone.
“We can definitely see tools like this fitting into consultancy going forward,” added Kimberley. “It is very user friendly and once you have used it across a few farms it becomes straightforward to integrate into day-to-day work.”
LARGER TANK CAPACITY AND ADVANCED BOOM TECHNOLOGY
John Deere today announced a major update to its 500R self propelled sprayer line-up for model year 2027 (MY27), introducing a new 6,000 litre spray tank flagship model alongside significant upgrades to boom technology, spraying performance and operator comfort. Designed for large arable farms and professional spraying operations, the MY27 500R series builds on the established front cab, rear engine concept and enters a higher productivity segment while maintaining a compact transport width of just 2.55 metres.
MORE CAPACITY WITH JOHN DEERE 560R
The headline addition for MY27 is the new John Deere 560R, expanding the 500R range into the 6,000 litre class. The larger tank is aimed at operators working during tight application windows who need to cover more hectares per day with fewer refilling stops, particularly in cereals, oilseed rape and other high input crops. The 560R complements the existing 4,000 litre and 5,000 litre models, giving customers a broader choice within a single platform.
NEW GENERATION SPRAY BOOMS UP TO 42 METRES
MY27 also marks the introduction of an all new spray boom portfolio for the 500R series with working widths of up to 42 metres. The modular steel boom design is more compact and lighter, offering significantly shorter opening and closing times. Boom widths of 30, 36 and 42 metres
are available, with a double-folding or triple-folding design and both 25cm and 50cm nozzle spacings. All nozzles and stainless steel spray lines are fully protected within the boom structure, helping to reduce damage and maintenance. Despite the wider working widths, the new booms maintain a 2.55 metre transport width, supporting safe and efficient road travel between fields.
IMPROVED BOOM STABILITY WITH BOOMTRAC™ PRO 2 AND ACTIVE YAW CONTROL
A key technical upgrade for MY27 is the introduction of BoomTrac™ Pro 2, John Deere’s latest automatic boom height control system. With five (boom widths less than 36m) or seven (36m and above) ultrasonic sensors, the system allows the boom to closely follow ground or crop contours, maintaining consistent spray height and overlap even at higher forward speeds. In addition, the new boom centre frame incorporates active boom yaw and roll control, designed to counteract chassis movement and slope effects. This helps to keep the boom stable across the full working width, improving application accuracy and reducing operator workload.
HIGHER SPRAYING SPEEDS
For MY27, the maximum spraying speed of the 500R series increases from 25km/h to 30km/h, without compromising droplet quality. This is enabled by the combination of stable boom control and John Deere’s established application systems, including
Individual Nozzle Control (INC) Pro and ExactApply™. These systems also allow multi-rate spraying (up to 15 different rates across the boom width), turn compensation and consistent droplet size across a wide speed range, helping operators apply crop protection products accurately while maximising daily output.
FAST FILLING AND EASY RINSING
All MY27 machines benefit from the innovative PowrSpray™ dual circuit solution system. A high capacity clean water filling pump delivers up to 1,200 litres per minute, reducing filling time and improving efficiency during busy spray periods. Rinsing is easily done with an intuitive interface accessible both inside and outside the cab. Automated rinse programmes, combined with AirRinse™ and AutoDilute functions, help minimise residue, reduce contamination risk and prepare the sprayer quickly for the next application.
OPERATOR COMFORT AND TRANSPORT EFFICIENCY
The MY27 500R series retains the front mounted cabin, familiar from the John Deere combines and forage harvesters, and rear engine layout, delivering a balanced 50:50 weight distribution and a clear view of the boom. Combined with in wheel suspension and the CommandDrive™ drivetrain with automated rpm management, the result is high ride comfort both in the field and on the road. Despite its increased capacity and wider booms, the 500R remains easy to manoeuvre on narrow roads.
EASE OF USE, SETUP AND DOCUMENTATION
For MY27, the 500R series places a strong emphasis on ease of use through AutoSetup, which allows operators to prepare spraying jobs before entering the field. With integrated agronomic advice and full field guidance, machine settings, application parameters and guidance lines can be transferred directly to the sprayer, helping to reduce setup time and avoid operator errors. In addition, automated documentation supports farmers and ag service providers in meeting regulatory requirements. Application records are generated automatically, can be exported as Excel files, and are ready to be submitted to governmental authorities, making it easier to fulfil Cross Compliance obligations with minimal administrative effort.
“From easy pre-work planning to the quick opening and closing of the boom, to the freedom to speed up where and when possible thanks to Pulse Width Modulation, as well as efficient road travel thanks to added comfort features, we are looking at a 10 to 15% productivity gain compared to the previous model,” said Solenne Bourgois, Go-to-Market Manager Crop Care for Europe.
MY27 AVAILABILITY
Production of the MY27 John Deere 500R series is scheduled to begin in late 2026, with first customer deliveries expected from early 2027, depending on model and specification.
KVERNELAND EXTENDS FERTILISER SPREADER CHOICES WITH ALENTIX
Kverneland has introduced a new fertiliser to the UK market. Called Alentix, this all-new twin-disc fertiliser spreader offers enhanced technology and greater spreading performance.
The flagship of its spreader portfolio, Alentix sits above the Exacta TL, and provides another option for those seeking the highest accuracy and efficiency with bagged fertilisers.
An ISOBUS machine, Alentix boasts a hopper capacity of up to 4,700 litres and a spread width of up to 54m. Hopper extensions are no longer bolted together, but clip together, making it easy to add or
remove as required.
Application accuracy is managed with four weigh cells working in combination with a dual reference sensor to maintain the desired flow rate, which can be from 0-550kg/min, thanks to an all-new dosing system called Rapid Rate.
Rapid Rate uses a square-shaped aperture mechanism that provides faster regulation of application rates, to meet the demands of variable rate applications and also the sophisticated MultiRate, which applies multiple rates across the chosen working width.
Available with mechanical pto or iDC hydraulic drivelines, Alentix brings additional
innovations to market. These include a two-piece spreading disc, which simplifies disc changes when swapping between the different types of eight-vane disc now available; and honeycomb profile hopper grids offer improved material flow.
In addition, the spreader’s rear panel can be folded down to create a robust walkway across the rear of the hopper, while an integrated quick-hitch makes coupling and uncoupling safer and easier.
Alentix includes Sync data transfer and can be used with either the Tellus 700 or 1200 terminals, or any AEF-certified universal terminal. Alentix is priced from £42,305.
SMARTER, SUSTAINABLE WEED CONTROL
OPICO has expanded its portfolio of innovative machinery by taking on the Rumex range of spot sprayers. The current Rumex line up of products includes the RXF600 6m and RXF900 9m front mounted sprayers.
The Rumex brand was established in 2020 by cousins Michael Thier and Thomas Ullrich, who set out to tackle a specific challenge faced by Bavarian farmers. In Bavaria broadcast spraying of dock plants in grassland is banned, and farmers are forced to rely on backpack sprayers for spot spraying dock plants, creating a labour and cost intensive operation. By developing a spot sprayer which utilises artificial intelligence (AI) Rumex enabled these farmers to significantly reduce labour costs and precisely target weeds. This focus on dock leaves gave rise to the name Rumex, which is the scientific genus for dock plants. Since then, the AI camera guidance technology has been further developed for a number of high value crops.
Central to the design of the Rumex Spot Sprayer is the AI technology which can accurately identify weeds despite variations in size or vegetation. Additionally, it can differentiate between specific types of weeds to achieve the best possible treatment. Their flagship model, the RXF900,
identifies weeds via six cameras and two spot lights which achieve an impressive 43,200 lumens per unit. Featuring 222 individually controllable flat-fan nozzles spaced just 40mm apart targeting even the smallest weeds. The adjustable chassis works for all common bed widths from 1.5m to 3m and folds to 3m for road transport.
The AI system can reliably identify weeds in difficult conditions such as poor light or shadows, eliminating the need for a hood over the nozzles, which differs from other AI spot sprayers on the market, and allows for a complete, uninhibited view of the machine working. Furthermore, as the machine uses bespoke nozzles to produce a precise narrow jet the Rumex boom is able to be positioned lower and closer to the target plant minimising drift in windy conditions.
The Rumex system is easy to set up with a simple 3-point linkage and PTO connection and is not limited by tractor size. This simple set up allows low horsepower and older tractors to be used, requiring just 50hp and no additional interfaces. The spot sprayer works during turns and at varying travel speeds with oscillating bearings and lateral guide wheels to keep a constant distance between the nozzle and the plant, even on undulating ground.
The sprayer’s “All Green” function is
designed for a range of crops such as onion, carrot, potatoes and sugar beet. It is particularly effective for targeting weeds when the volunteer plants are emerging but the crop has yet to break through the soil. This enables precise targeting while preventing herbicide application to the crop itself, helping to optimise yields and reduce competition for vital nutrients. Rumex is continuously expanding the capabilities of the AI software.
Spotspraying offers two major benefits compared to broadcast spraying; reduced overall chemical use and reduced “crop check” effect. Targeted herbicide application reduces the overall chemical use by up to 94%, benefiting the environment while also lowering input costs. At the same time the cash crop is not “checked” by broadcast chemical as the machine only targets the weeds. As a result, the crop doesn’t expend valuable energy detoxifying herbicides and continues growing normally without weed competition leading to increased yield and an earlier harvest in many cases.
Technical support will be provided through the OPICO service team with overthe-phone advice as well as a team of fieldbased technicians. Genuine Rumex parts will be available through OPICO’s online ordering platform.
KVERNELAND INTRODUCES ADDITIONAL F-DRILL MODEL
Kverneland has introduced a new 6m f-drill model to its portfolio of power harrow drill combinations, with this latest version combining hydraulic folding with the ability to distribute grain and fertiliser, or two different seed types, at the wider working width.
Called the f-drill Plus, this new 6m folding coulterbar brings a second distribution head and pipework to the outfit, for those seeking more output when used in combination with the Rotago F power harrow and f-drill Maxi Plus front hopper. The 2200-litre hopper carries two Eldos electrically-driven seed metering units, and offers a 60:40 split.
Using two 3m toolbars, the 6m f-drill Plus carries a total of 48 CX-II double-entry coulters. Seed and fertiliser distribution is achieved using dual distribution heads
arranged one behind the other, positioned to enable hydraulic folding without interference. Previously, the widest f-drill Plus toolbar for grain and fertiliser, was available as a 4m folding assembly using 32 CX-II double-entry coulters.
“Having a 6m hydraulic folding, grain and fertiliser option in the f-drill range is something that customers have been asking for,” explains Simon Wills, Kverneland product manager for seeding equipment. “And this latest version strengthens our product range for those looking to extract maximum output and efficiency from the f-drill, when used with our Rotago F Isobus power harrow.”
In addition to the folding coulterbar design, the f-drill series has received a host of upgrades, including a new hopper version called the f-drill Compact Plus, a
dual front camera system with dedicated screen and a hopper weighing.
The Compact Plus hopper adds a split tank to the dual Eldos metering unit format, to suit either grain and fertiliser, or two seed types. Previous hopper choices included the Duo, which delivered half-width shut-off.
All f-drill front tank options can now be equipped with a weigh cell option, which can be retro-fitted to existing f-drill combinations. Hopper sieves have also been revised, and are now lift-out pieces that are divided into four sections to simplify hopper cleaning.
The f-drill Plus 6m folding grain and fertiliser combination complete with Maxi Plus front hopper and Rotago F Isobus folding power harrow, carries a retail price of £171,651.

NEW CALCULATOR HELPS OPTIMISE PIG AND BROILER FEED STRATEGIES
A new online calculator has been launched to help nutritionists and livestock producers better assess betamannan levels in pig and broiler diets.
Developed by Elanco, the free tool aims to support more informed decisions around feed formulation that could help drive improved animal productivity and health.
Dr Tom Dutton, technical consultant at Elanco, says beta-mannans – which are found in many raw materials such as soya, sunflower and cereals – can have a significant but often overlooked effect on animal performance.
“Beta-mannans can mimic the structure of pathogenic organisms which causes them to trigger an unnecessary response by the animal’s immune system, known as a FeedInduced Immune Response (FIIR),” he said.
“This diverts nutrients and energy away from productive functions and causes inflammation within the gut, reducing nutrient absorption, lowering feed conversion efficiency, and increasing the risk of secondary infections.”
He added: “Even minimal amounts of beta-mannans – (0.20%) – is enough to trigger a FIIR.” To address the challenge, the energy-sparing enzyme beta-mannanase –commercially available as Hemicell™ XT – can be included in diets to break down the betamannans and reduce their impact.
"The new calculator can be used to assess beta-mannan risk at any stage of the diet.
By using ingredient percentages entered by the user, it estimates beta-mannan levels in the ration and identifies if the inclusion of
Hemicell XT would be beneficial,” Dr Dutton explained.
He adds that improving visibility of betamannan levels allows for a more targeted approach to feed formulation.
“Identifying and taking action to counter beta-mannans in diets is an important step in improving feed efficiency, supporting gut function, and helping animals perform to their full potential,” he said.
The calculators are free to use on the Elanco website now.
EASY-TO-USE FLY SPRAY
Lodi UK’s new Ultra Dairy Fly Spray provides a targeted surface treatment for adult flies in livestock housing as warmer weather increases seasonal pest pressure.
Ross Goodman, technical and key accounts director at Lodi UK, said the launch comes as farmers report rising fly numbers in livestock housing, where warm bedding and muck areas can quickly accelerate breeding.
“Animal bedding provides the ideal breeding grounds for fly larvae, particularly as temperatures rise,” he said.
“Once these areas reach around 30 degrees, which is sooner than you’d think, breeding cycles can shorten from 25-30 days to as little as six or seven, so early control is important to protect animal comfort and hygiene.”
For best results, Mr Goodman recommended using the Ultra Dairy Fly Spray as part of a wider fly control programme. “Good fly control starts with breaking their lifecycle,” he said.
“Treating bedding, muck and breeding areas with an insect growth regulator, such as Larvenol or Maggots, helps reduce the number of flies reaching adulthood. The surface spray can then be used to target adult flies already active in the building.
“Ultra Dairy Fly Spray contains tetramethrin for rapid knockdown and cypermethrin for longer residual control.”
Mr Goodman recommended applying it with a knapsack or low-pressure sprayer directly on insects or to walls and surfaces where flies are likely to rest.
“Residual activity can last for several weeks, depending on the surface, environment and cleaning regime,” he said.
“Farmers should reapply spray after treated areas have been washed down.”
He added the spray also supports fly control product rotation, helping farmers maintain effective control as fly pressures change through the season.
“Flies can build resistance if the same products are used repeatedly,” he said.
“This spray gives farmers a new lowerstrength option to use before increasing strength, if necessary.”
The product is suitable for use across livestock and equine housing, with particular relevance for dairy units where hygiene needs careful management.
“The formula is also free from piperonyl butoxide (PBO), making it a practical
option for milking parlours and other food-sensitive areas. Using a non-synergist spray without PBO within dairy parlours, helps maintain a simpler chemical profile to reduce the risk of mixed residues contaminating milk or milking equipment.
“While synergists like PBO can help overcome insecticide resistance, they add another chemical component that must be carefully managed in food-production environments,” he said.

MAJOR PROGRESS IN NATIONAL CALF RESPIRATORY DISEASE PROJECT
CVS Farm has reported significant progress in its ongoing calf respiratory disease project, launched in 2022 to improve the detection, prevention and management of Bovine Respiratory Disease (BRD) across UK cattle farms.
The latest 2025 data shows a major increase in diagnostic testing, deeper engagement in preventive herd health planning, and widespread adoption of evidence based protocols designed to reduce disease burden and antimicrobial use.
BRD remains one of the most costly and persistent health challenges affecting youngstock, with an estimated annual industry impact of £50 million. As a complex disease driven by viral, bacterial and mycoplasma pathogens, effective control requires early detection, accurate pathogen identification and proactive, farm specific prevention strategies.
CVS Farm’s three year project, supported by Boehringer Ingelheim, was established to remove barriers to diagnostic testing and embed diagnostic led herd health planning across its farm network.
Throughout 2025, CVS Farm practices continued to offer subsidised nasopharyngeal swabs and multiplex PCR testing, processed through CVS Labs using an eight pathogen panel. This approach has enabled vets to identify the exact pathogens circulating within individual herds and tailor their recommendations accordingly.
Diagnostic submissions almost doubled in 2025, increasing from 124 in 2023 and 125 in 2024 to 247 this year. The number of processed samples rose to 190, reflecting strengthened collaboration between farmers and their veterinary teams and the growing normalisation of diagnostic testing as part of routine herd health planning.
“Removing historic barriers to diagnostics has been transformative,” said Steven
Carragher, CVS Farm Quality Improvement Director. “We are now seeing farmers and vets working together in a genuinely proactive way. Diagnostics are no longer a ‘nice to have’ – they are becoming embedded in everyday herd management. This shift allows us to deliver tailored, preventative interventions that improve calf health, reduce antibiotic use and enhance long term farming resilience.”
The expanded dataset from 2023–2025 has highlighted consistent patterns in the pathogens associated with BRD cases:
• Pasteurella (94%), Mannheimia (64%) and Histophilus (48%) remained the most prevalent bacterial findings.
• Viral components included coronavirus (34%), RSV (28%) and PI3 (10%).
• IBR prevalence remained notably low at just 6%.
These insights have helped veterinary teams design farm specific plans that incorporate ventilation improvements,
hygiene and biosecurity measures, colostrum management, vaccination strategies and more precise antimicrobial protocols.
Crucially, vaccination timing has emerged as a key determinant of success, with strategies increasingly aligned to predictable stress periods such as weaning and housing.
The simplicity of the swabbing procedure has also encouraged greater participation from recently qualified vets, providing a practical entry point to lead diagnostic investigations and develop confidence in herd health conversations. Whilst CVS Farm Quality Improvement leads across its 15 farm practices have supported case discussions and ensured consistent delivery of the project’s aims.
With diagnostic led prevention now firmly embedded, CVS Farm plans to publish the full dataset and findings in the coming months, sharing insights with the wider farming community and contributing to the industry’s collective understanding of BRD control.

£4,000. Starts instantly and runs very well. Most things seem to work. A high quality and well made tractor. Had new clutch about 18 months ago. Seat is in very good condition, no rips or tears. Some general wear and tear, the biggest issue is that the cab, in particular the floor just by the step is very rusty and rotten. Would be ideal for occasional use for example for mowing a field.
