PERFECT AND POWERFUL PRUNING UP TO 25MM
Targeting domestic users, STIHL ASA 20 battery-powered secateurs could well appeal to those pruning small vineyards and fruit orchards. Why? Think good pruning power and the ability to cut fresh material of up to 25mm in diameter. At just 0.98kg, the tool is light enough to make overhead pruning a breeze too. Add that an ASA 20 secateur will snip up to 2,000 times per charge and there is a lot to like.
Cutting fresh material of up to around 25mm is no problem for the ASA 20, the secateurs producing a clean cut at the press of the trigger. Although targetting domestic users, many with a small orchand or vineyard to prune may consider these a bit of a bargain at around £210 inclusive of VAT.
STIHL make it clear that its ASA 20 ‘power pruner’ secateurs are not designed for intense professional usage. With a retail price just shy of £210, including a single 10.8 volt AS 2 battery and AL 101 mains charger, they may be far from cheap as garden tool but as a low cost alternative to pro-secateurs they could be just the ticket for those with a smaller orchard or vineyard to look after.
The blades can be set to two different opening widths, the smaller setting speeding up light pruning of up to around 15mm, the wider selection suiting heavier work of up to 25mm. As we used the tool and got more familiar with it, we noticed the smaller setting was our favoured option for working on garden shrubs to include roses, the larger opening enabling us to handle light fruit tree pruning.
The operating trigger, incidentally, has a progressive cut. This enables the cutting blade to be closed in a manner that enables the tool to be manipulated around a thicker stem. We cut up to 30mm in this way although you do need to be fair to the tool and not over strain it. As to battery life, we ran the tool on a single charge for several hours, with over 1,500 cuts showing on the OLED display with a ‘bar’ on the battery indicator remaining. This is impressive staying power. Weighing in at 0.98kg with battery and at measuring 350mm in length, the ASA 20 is not just light and compact but powerful too.
BEEPS AND OLED DISPLAY
The power on button is located ahead of the battery, holding it down until there is a beep, followed by depressing the trigger
twice in quick succession leading to a double beep. This is how the tool is activated, with the blades opening to the larger of the two settings. To select the smaller opening, the trigger needs to be held down, resulting on a single beep followed by the blades moving to the smaller opening. To go back to full opening, the same process is repeated. The tool will rest with the blades open and ready to cut. To shut the blades, it is necessary to hold the trigger down, wait for a beep and, without releasing the tigger, wait for a further couple of beeps. The trigger can then be released and the blades will shut and stay closed.
The OLED display will show the selected opening, along with the battery capacity and total number of cuts. The battery indicator is divided into three bars. When just a single bar shows it does not mean the battery will be down on ‘power’ but that it is running low on capacity. In work we found the ASA 20 delivered pretty much the same cutting power right up until the battery was depleted at which point the tool shut down.
Outline specifications
WHAT’S TESTED
Two blade openings cater for cutting smaller stems at speed or dealing with heavier material of up to 25mm. To swap between the two, the trigger just needs to be held closed until the tool beeps. The jaws will then open wider or closer, with the OLED display showing the selected setting.
SAFETY FEATURES
If the tool is not used for around two and half minutes, it will turn off automatically. If you want to store the secateur with the blades closed, you will need to turn it on again and go through the process previously mentioned. Initially this seemed a bit odd that the tool does not turn off with the blades closed. Then it became clear why. If it were to shut down and close the blade at the same time it could lead to a nasty accident.
LIKES AND DISLIKES
We would struggle to list any dislikes of the ASA 20. The tool is easy to use, delivers a clean cut in light fleshy material and does equally well dealing with tough fruit tree branches. As the secateurs are not designed to cut above 25mm it would be unfair to comment on their unwillingness to tackle much above 30mm so we cannot list that as a dislike. If you are after a heavier pruner you would need to invest in something else.
The list of likes includes ease of operation, the ability to keep pruning for an extended period and of course no chance of wrist strain. The biggest chore is dealing with the pruned material not the job itself. For those who demand a clean cut, it is worth noting the blades can be removed for sharpening and adjusted using the lock release tool stored in the battery compartment. New blades retail for under £25 including VAT, but the chances are you will not need them unless you really work the tool hard.
Simple blade adjustment/removal tool is located in a slot in the battery compartment. Swaping over to a fresh set of blades is a simple enough job, new replacements costing under £25 inc.VAT. It is possible to sharpen the blades if necessary.
The blades of STIHL PG 10 by-pass secateurs open wider than the jaws of the ASA 20, but you would need a fair amount of wrist strength to beat the cutting power of the battery ASA pruner.
When compared to a pair of conventional secateurs, the ASA 20 is longer at around 135mm, the handle spanning a chunky 40mm that some may find ‘thick’ but most will be fine.
A nice touch is that the secateurs come with a plastic guard. Although aimed at shielding the blades during transport or storage, the guard will also protect the user from accidental cuts as the blades stay open unless you deliberately store the tool with them closed.
SUMMARY
As outlined at the outset, STIHL market the ASA 20 secateurs as a domestic product. That is to perhaps manage expectations and put off those pro users who would perhaps expect to be able to work in heavier materials.
The single AS 2 battery supplied with the ASA 20 secateurs starter kit will take around 3 hours to top up from empty using the supplied AL 101 charger. An alternative AL 5-2 high speed double battery charger is available for around £91 inc VAT and will charge two AS 2 batteries to full in around 55 minutes.
We found a 25mm diameter rating bang on the money for easy pruning, cutting thicker stems proving possible with care but noting
that it is beyond the secateur’s brief. The tools strength is quick and accurate light pruning ability with a beautifully clean cut.
Slip on guard protects the operator from the blades when the tool is not in use. The blades are sharp and produce a clean cut. STIHL recommend users wear gloves when working the tool.

WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES A BAR MAKE?
A short bar is easier to handle amongst a mass of branches and has the added advantage of both reducing a saw’s weight and improving speed of cut. Fitted with a 14in Light 04 bar, the STIHL MS 271 proved fast, light and agile.
STIHL offers its popular MS 271 chainsaw with the company’s Light 04 bar and RM3 Pro chain in place of the Rollomatic bar and Oilomatic .325RM chain combination that was once the standard fit. As the name suggests, Light 04 bar combo is lighter but how does the new set up work in practice?
Weighing in at 5.6kg on its own and without a bar and fluids, the Stihl MS 271 is a 2.6kW/3.5bhp 50cc saw that has long ticked all the boxes to make it a decent all-round farm saw choice. With a Light 04 guide bar fitted, to an MS 271, performance is claimed to be increased by up to 20% when compared to the established Rollomatic bar alternative.
The ‘theory’ bit is that the Light 04 bar and RM3 Pro chain have a 1.3mm kerf and cutting tooth width of 6.8 mm, the Rollomatic bar and Oilomatic .325RM chain measuring a wider 1.6mm and 7.7mm respectively. The Light 04 and RM3 chain combo creates less friction and this should mean more engine power is actually translated into cutting action with the added bonus of being up to 200 grams lighter.
SO MUCH FOR THE CLAIMS, HOW DOES IT PAN OUT IN PRACTICE?
We used a Stihl MS 271 with 14, 16 and 18inch (35cm, 40cm and 45cm) Light 04 bars and .325” RM3 Pro Rapid-Micro semichisel chain. To get an initial feel for the saw and bars, and to run the power unit in, we tackled a couple of ‘typical’ farm clear up jobs, the first being to slice up a large branch that had fallen from an ash tree. This had a maximum diameter at its thick end of around 50cm/20in.
We used just the 14in Light 04 bar, the MS 271 feeling well balanced and easy to manoeuvre with the ‘short’ bar when slicing off the lighter branches for disposal in the brush pile. Thicker branch sections were cut into rings for logs, using the same bar to complete the job. We finished with around a quarter of the fuel from the saws second tank fill remaining. The ‘short’ 14in bar delivered really speedy performance and fuel use, particularly from a new saw that had yet to be properly run in, was better than expected.
We next cleared a much larger oak branch, this measuring 75cm/30in across at its widest point. After clearing the light branches, we decided to swap to the longer Light 04 16in bar, the increase to 40cm
WHAT’S TESTED
Despite the 14in bar not having the size to deal with a 30in plus diameter butt in a single pass, it proved well up to completing the job, the MS 271 delivering enough speed and torque easy with this ‘short’ bar.
enabling us to tackle the larger ‘butt’ end of the branch. This was nearer 80cm/30in in diameter at its widest. As before, the light branches were quickly dispatched to the brush pile but as we worked deeper into the increasingly thick sections of branch, we ran into the rot that was the likely cause of the branch falling from the tree.
Fitted with a 14in Light 04 bar and RM3 saw chain, the STIHL MS 271 delivered extremely fast cutting, the chain’s 1.3mm kerf and 6.8mm cut width being matched to smooth running. Although it is tempting to opt for a longer guide bar, a short one is easier to handle and, because the chain runs faster, it will cut quicker too. Fuel use
Sawing less than ‘clean’ timber can prove a bit tricky and, in this case, the rotten material we ran into quickly stripped oil from the chain, causing it to run hot and slacken as you would expect. This was a reminder that, regardless of bar and chain type, you need to keep an eye on the chain if you want to avoid problems.
Over a period of weeks, we continued to periodically work MS 271, swapping between 14in, 16in and 18in Light 04 bars and completing several hours of test time. Although we use several professional ‘forestry’ saws, no one felt the MS 271 was in anyway underpowered or over heavy for its output and the saw ran without any starting or idling problems.
WHAT’S TESTED
available. We tried the saw with a 20in Rollomatic ES 20in bar running a 1.6mm kerf full-chisel chain. Although this combination, with its 7.7mm cut-width, is not a recommended combo for the MS 271 , the saw performed well with this paring in fresh timber but we really noticed an improvement in cutting speed when swapping back a Light 04 bar and chain with its narrower 6.8mm cut width.
<< The key question, of course, is whether or not the saw with a Light 04 and RM3 chain combination is a better choice than opting for an MS 271 with a ‘conventional’ Rollomatic guide bar and Oilomatic .325RM chain. We did not have the facilities to accurately quantify how each of the bars performed ‘back to back’, but repeated bar swaps did allow us to make working comparisons. It was the swap to a longer ‘conventional’ 20in bar and 1.6mm kerf chain that was the most interesting, however, as the saw ‘felt’
noticeably different with it fitted. The MS 271 got through a full tank of fuel in around 45 to 50 minutes when carrying out mixed duties with this bar, work including hard cutting through heavy timber to include ash and sycamore.
When we swapped back to the 18in Light 04 bar to continue in similar, but not identical, conditions and noticed we were now getting nearer an hour out of a tank of fuel. The saw felt ‘faster’ with the Light 04 bar too, mixed ‘clear up work’, with stops and starts included, providing a decent
Easy to spot indicators that the MS 271 is a ‘farm’ as opposed to out and out pro saw include screws to adjust the carburettor, non-captive nuts on the sprocket cover, no black highlight on the felling line and polycarbonate body and handles. Do not let this put you off. These saws are tough and well up to typical farm usage.
guide as to how the same saw operates with different bars.
SUMMARY
All in, we found the MS 271 and Light 04 bar combination certainly delivered in terms of performance, the saw with the 14in bar and RM3 chain cutting with really impressive speed. Sitting between the 14in and 18in bars, the 16in Light 04 bar and MS 271 offered an ideal balance between performance and versatility. We feel this combo should suit many looking for an all-round farm saw.
WHAT’S TESTED
Resin build up on the bar is not a problem, but it is best cleaned off as it can cause the bar to ‘bind’ if allowed to build up. Stihl recommend using its resin spray as a cleaner, but common household cleaner Mr Sheen is also effective at removing hard baked-on resin and leaves a coating of polish to ease future cleaning. If you experience a chain running dry, ensure the bar groove is cleaned out and that bar’s oil inlet is not blocked. This can happen really quickly when cutting rotting wood as pictured.
Stripped down, the differences between a pro-saw to the left and a ‘farm’ saw on the right are greater than many would think. The pro-saw’s crankcase is integral with the saw’s magnesium ‘chassis’, with an advanced M-Tronic ‘self-tuning’ carburettor linked to the ignition system to automatically keep the engine in tune. Inset, a ‘washable’ black HD2 filter is fitted to the MS261 C-M. It has a larger surface area than the standard flock covered nonwashable item fitted to the MS271 and is designed to withstand repeated cleaning better (It can be retrofitted to the MS271). Other pro saw differences include a ‘cushioned’ ElastoStart ‘T’ starter grip and, as mentioned in the text, an adjustable chain oiler. A spur chain drive, integral to the clutch drum, is used on the MS271, the pro-saw models having a replaceable sprocket that means the clutch drum does not need to be replaced when the sprocket is either worn or swapped to one with a different ratio. A spur drive is the one feature we prefer on a non-pro saw – it makes fitting and removing the chain a lot easier.
EVENT SCENE
If you have a story, or an event, please do get in touch: peterlove@madasafish.com, TEL: 01323 833125 Peter Love, the joint creator of Tractor & Machinery and Classic Tractor, gives Farm Machinery his views on this month’s events.
As I write this in mid-June the weather has been just wonderful as I have visited various sales and shows up and down the county.
Tractor Fest at Newby Hall, Ripon, North Yorkshire on 7-8 June was superb with 1,300 tractors attending. For those of you who like steam engines, can I recommend The Weald of Kent Steam Engine
Rally at Woodchurch, near Ashford, Kent on 2-3 August. This year the event sees the Lambert of Horsmonden Gathering as its main feature. Chris had over 200 engines through his hands during his lifetime and over 50 are in preservation today.
See more on this below.
CHRIS LAMBERT AND HIS ‘OLD GENTLEMAN’
As editor of Old Glory I have written three 10 page articles in our June, July and August issues of the magazine on Chris Lambert and his steam engines that dominated Horsmonden, Kent from 1848-1955.
Chris was a steam preservation pioneer having steam events in his yard from 1949-54 with his ‘Old Gentleman’ as he called them in late June each year. The site is now a housing estate which is called Lambert’s Place situated opposite the former Horsmonden railway station. The articles go through the history of the company and his famous sale and so much more.
If you like local Kent history these articles are for you! I have over 500 pictures in my collection of Lambert engines, which were difficult to choose from. This is all as a prelude to The Weald of Kent Steam Engine Rally at
If local Kent history is your thing Old Glory has plenty on Chris Lambert in it. The June issue features a ex Lambert engine on its front cover
Woodchurch on 2-3 August where 26 of his engines are hoped to attend. It is suggested by Lambert Gathering organiser John Freeman that I will give the special Lambert parade commentary at Woodchurch on the
Saturday. Let’s hope things all happen as they should! To obtain copies of Lambert articles in Old Glory then do order online or tel: 01959 541444 and press one and the staff will be delighted to help you out.
WELLAND STEAM AND COUNTRY SALE NO GO!
Howard Pugh of HJ Pugh, Ledbury has informed us that with mutual agreement with the organisers of now the largest rally of its type in the country, the 25-27 July Welland Steam & Country Show at Woodside Farm, Welland, Worcestershire WR13 6NG, the Friday sale will not take place in 2025.
The car parks are working to capacity and with so many people wanting to attend this very popular rally particularly on the Friday
the space where the sale normally takes place is needed for other things. It has been decided that for 2025 at least, the sale will not take place. H J Pugh indicated that any of the lots you would have entered here are more than welcome at their HQ site some 12 miles away, as they have many up and coming vintage sales.
Please don’t forget that HJ Pugh have a very important steam sale in the area on Wednesday 30 July with lots of tools and machinery in it.
GOOD CROWD AT WET IVOR JAMES SALE
The restored Massey Ferguson made record money
It was like a party at North Down Orchard, Haslebury Plunkett near Yeovil, Somerset on Wednesday 21 May when Henry Biss of H J Pugh sold the Ivor James collection. There was a good crowd for the 161 lot sale, sadly it rained the whole morning of the sale, however the preview afternoon was pure sunshine and music played loudly through the PA system which added to the occasion. All tractors were in running order which was good to see. Ivor has been part of the preservation scene in these parts for decades, but just does not have the time today to look after his fleet of approximately 30 tractors, which he has cared for so well. Many were either original or done up very well and this was reflected in the price paid for the ex French Massey Ferguson 145 that had been eloquently restored to grade 5+ standard, but still without V5c (possible duty to pay). It went on to make a record £10,400 on the day. The cabless 1976
Massey Ferguson 185 raised £7,300 on the day and changed hands
Massey Ferguson 185 OYA466P in original style condition and power steering raised £7,300 and the similar condition 168 with loader and cab + Multi-Power was yours at £6,000.
As for the ‘blue’ fleet the prices for the Fordson E27N Majors held up very well having seen a slip back in Perkins P6 engined examples at the Cheffins Collective in April. The E1A prices were all OK, but not very inspiring and the six-cylinder conversion made an average £4,000.
The 1946 Field Marshall Series One no.2919 EJ7997 which really needs a new footplate and wings and had been repainted 50 plus years ago at least, unfortunately did not find a new home. Overall the sale went very well for this well known and well liked character.
CHEFFINS CONCLUDED THEIR JT HILL SALE
On Friday 13 June Cheffins concluded their JT Hill sale at Northallerton, North Yorkshire when this 51 lot sale was concluded. Featuring some 20 tractors, lots of Ferguson implements and a Massey Ferguson 71G forage harvester in fully restored condition which after 66 bids sold for a cracking £8,200. The 1976 Massey Ferguson 1200 in restored condition changed hands
at £29,000. As for the yellow and white 1976 Muir-Hill 121 in similar condition sold for £18,500 and the well restored Caterpillar D2 3J £4,000.
As for the 1968 Massey Ferguson 135 Multi-Power some £9,000 was paid in restored condition and the 1970 straight 135 £6,000. All in all a fine sale just proving again there is still good money in agricultural machinery if you have the right thing of course.
Some £8,200 was paid for the Massey Ferguson 71F forage harvester after 66 bids!
VENERABLE COLLECTION OF TRACTORS
Bagshaws were at the late Jim Way premises on Saturday 14 June, Jim was a cattle haulier and farmer at Little Broad Gates Farm, Ashleyhay, Matlock, Derbyshire. He had a lovely venerable collection of tractors that Mark Elliott sold.
It started with a David Brown Cropmaster WRA593 grade 2 at £1,550. It was followed by other David Browns like the VAK that raised £1,500 grade 4 condition and a 1953 David Brown 25D £1,500 in similar condition.
The International 575 Hydro that is thought to possibly be a prototype, sold for £2,400 in good condition, grade 3. The Bradford built Internationals: B414 £2,400, B414 with loader £1,100 and B250 £1,600. Four Fergusons came up and all reasonably clean the most paid was £2,300 for the TE-F diesel with roll bar grade 4. The TE-D petrol paraffin raised £2,000 another TE-F diesel £1,700 and £1,500 for the TE-A.
The one they all wanted was the Fordson Standard N industrial
Industrial Fordson N with winch and bull bar sold for £4,100
1948 Field Marshall Series 2 raised £8,100 as well known dealer Bob Vaughan checks it out
with winch and front bull bar in lovely patina condition sold for £4,100. As for the Fordson E1A Major’s the best a 1959 Power Major made £4,300 in grade 3 condition. A rare Porsche Allgaier 133 which worked in the UK in very original condition sold for £3,400. As for the highest price on the day that went to the 1948 Field Marshall Series 2 grade 2 at £8,100. All in all a very good sale as everyone enjoyed the brilliant views and dry stone walls of the area.

Working at 22.5cm deep with a five-furrow, on-land Kverneland LO plough, AgXeed’s 156hp AgBot completed 20.8ha in 24 hours, using 382.72 litres of diesel
KVERNELAND SETS AUTONOMOUS WORLD PLOUGHING RECORD
Kverneland has set the first world record for autonomous ploughing by teaming up with autonomy solutions provider, AgXeed. The 24-hour autonomous ploughing challenge was carried out at Birch Farm, Stonegrave, North Yorkshire, and achieved an output of 20.8ha (51.37 acres) using a
driverless AgBot 5.115T2 pulling a fivefurrow Kverneland LO 300/85 plough.
Working on-land at furrow widths of 40cm (16in) and at a depth of 22.5cm (9in) to prepare land for maize and fodder beet, the 156hp rubber-tracked autonomous AgBot operated at forward speeds from 5.6kph up
to 8kph on the rolling land, slowing only to carry out headland turn sequences.
Telemetry from the AgBot confirmed that fuel consumption from the diesel-electric powertrain totalled 382.72 litres over the 24-hour period, delivering a fuel efficiency figure of 18.4 litres/ha.
With the sun setting over north Yorkshire, the AgBot and Kverneland LO plough continues uninterrupted into the darkness
“We are delighted to be part of this technological revolution and thrilled to have completed this world-first record attempt,” said Adam Burt, Kverneland UK’s product specialist for ploughs. “The combination of Kverneland LO plough and AgBot achieved an output that would have taken two working days to complete with an operator using a similar powered tractor pulling a five-furrow plough,” he said.
“Using Kverneland No.28 bodies, the LO plough is one of the easiest on the market to pull, and its low draft has rewarded this achievement with low fuel consumption supported by a high-quality finish,” said Adam. “Creating this record has highlighted the efficiencies available from using autonomous tractors for repetitive tasks.”
AgXeed UK sales manager, Peter Robinson, was equally positive about the AgBot’s 24-hour performance.
“Having mapped the field boundary and created a job map complete with headland turns sequence, the AgBot worked tirelessly for 24 hours,” said Peter Robinson. “It has proved that autonomy is not just for the mundane, repetitive tasks, but it can also
be applied to more complex processes, such as ploughing.”
With multi-layer security systems built into the AgBot for unrivalled operational safety, the 7t autonomous tractor was equipped with a 1.5t front weight to reinforce traction for the fully-mounted, five-furrow Kverneland LO plough.
The AgBot was momentarily stopped during the night, to top-up its 375-litre fuel tank to complete the 24-hour work period. The total area ploughed during the 24-hour challenge was verified by north Yorkshire
farmer and former director of the Society of Ploughmen, James Whitty.
Kverneland UK would like to thank the following for their help with this autonomous ploughing record: Peter Armitage of Birch Farm, Stonegrave, near York, for providing the location, and James Whitty for verifying the area ploughed.

CRAWFORDS GROUP DRIVES COMPLIANCE AND CONTROL WITH ASSETGO
Crawfords Group, a leading agricultural machinery dealer in the south east of England, has transformed its fleet management by adopting AssetGo’s fleet and driver compliance software.
With five depots spanning Essex, Kent, West Sussex and Hampshire, Crawfords operates a fleet of around 80 passenger and light commercial vehicles, including company cars, vans, trailers, and pickup trucks for its sales team. The firm previously used spreadsheets to manage its fleet but found they couldn’t keep up with its growth.
“We doubled in size in five or six years and tried to let each depot manage their own vehicles,” said group aftersales manager, Darren Bantick, “the condition of the vehicles, the MOTs, the tax, the servicing – it all became too much. We knew we needed something to give us a helping hand.”
Darren admitted the lack of a dedicated fleet management system led to inconsistencies with vehicle inspections but said adopting AssetGo’s system in September 2024 revolutionised compliance.
“We now have control,” he added, “monthly checks are in place, and if something’s due, the system reminds you. If there’s a defect, it flags it. One of our drivers recently had a tyre wearing on the outside and we caught it early, before it turned into something dangerous. Now, we have more confidence that the fleet is being managed properly, because the system does the thinking for us.”
“We started with around 40 vehicles, and within a week, we realised we needed to go
to 80. It’s not just the service vans anymore – we’ve added company cars, trailers, pickups – everything.”
AssetGo’s software specialises in the fundamental aspects of fleet management compliance, converting them into simple, everyday checks for drivers, the results of which are highly visible to fleet operators and easily manageable. The system addresses core fleet activities such as daily walkaround checks, cost and accident reporting, fuel and expense tracking and tachograph analysis –among other key elements.
Crawfords has also used AssetGo to manage tachograph compliance for light commercial vehicles towing more than 3.5 tonnes. Darren added that depot managers are now accountable for their vehicles’ status and visibility has improved.
“If something’s wrong, we can see it,” he explained, “and if someone hasn’t addressed
a defect, we know. It’s just so much easier than the way it was before.”
Jade Younger, Crawfords’ fleet consultant, is quick to point out that Crawfords made the move to AssetGo not because it had to, but because it wanted to get ahead with compliance.
“A lot of companies wait until they’re forced to be compliant, but Crawfords didn’t,” said Jade, “they saw the importance of getting compliant before it became critical, and AssetGo gave them the tools to do it.”
The company plans to use AssetGo to automate driving licence checks, which are currently managed manually through its HR system. “That’s the next step,” added Darren, “doing it manually isn’t the most efficient way, and means it can take longer. Automating licence checks will speed the whole thing up.”
KVERNELAND PARTS GO ONLINE WITH TERRAKO
Kverneland has introduced a digital marketplace for customers, simplifying the ordering of original parts. It is called Terrako, and enables Kverneland parts to be ordered through an online portal (http://uk.terrako.com) that provides access to dealer parts stock.
“As a digital marketplace, Terrako makes it easy for customers to order parts for their Kverneland equipment, even if they don’t know their local Kverneland dealer,” explained Kevin Waddingham, Kverneland parts marketing manager. “It is a process that saves the customer time, reduces downtime and ensures the right parts are ordered, and are ready for collection from their nearest Kverneland dealer.”
Access to Terrako requires customers to sign-up, creating an online account which highlights their nearest Kverneland dealers. Doing so gives the customer direct access to dealer stock levels when searching for parts. Payment is made at the time of ordering by credit card, and customers then receive an email confirmation of their order.
“It may be that the closest dealer might be out of stock, but another Kverneland dealer within easy reach may have those parts sat on the shelf,” said Kevin. “Using Terrako will speed up the process of finding and buying the correct parts.”
Online ordering also offers quick and easy parts identification through Smart
Search, Kverneland’s photographic parts identification tool, which can be accessed using a smart phone, tablet or PC. By taking a photograph of the required part, Smart Search ensures you get the correct part number, reducing the risk of incorrect ordering. Any parts showing as out of stock at the point of order will also prompt an estimated delivery date.
“The introduction of the Terrako digital marketplace will make it much easier for customers to buy the correct Kverneland parts without having to take the required items to the dealership,” said Kevin. “It is a very efficient process that can be accessed 24-7 and it takes the guesswork out of finding original Kverneland parts.”

JCB HYDROGEN ENGINE TO DEBUT
JCB’s pioneering hydrogen fuelled engine was on public display for the first time at a UK agricultural event during the Royal Highland Show at Ingliston, Edinburgh.
The engine was a centrepiece of the Royal Highland and Agricultural Show Society’s Presidential Solutions Hub highlighting cutting-edge solutions being developed to help meet Net Zero climate targets.
A team of 150 engineers has been working on the £100 million JCB hydrogen engine project for nearly four years, and has produced a power unit that matches the performance characteristics of the company’s DieselMAX engine.
Since the first prototype build, 130 evaluation units have been assembled for exhaustive testing and a number of those engines – and the refuelling options that
JCB has developed – are being tested in real world on-site situations by several plant hire companies, with very positive results.
Moreover, some key legislative hurdles have been cleared this year; in January, JCB confirmed that a number of vehicle licensing authorities across Europe have certified the hydrogen-fuelled engine for sale, with others set to follow suit.
In April, the UK government paved the way for a change in road vehicle regulations allowing hydrogen-fuelled agricultural and construction machinery to use public highways, and in May the engine received full EU type-approval, allowing its use in JCB and other OEM off-highway machinery as it complies with EU Stage V emissions rules.
George Lyon, President of the Royal Highland society, said: “Over the past year,
the RHASS Presidency has been promoting new, innovative solutions that farmers can use to meet the challenge of Net Zero. We are delighted that JCB contributed to the Solutions Hub at the show with their new hydrogen engine, which represents an opportunity to switch to a “green” fuel while retaining familiar combustion engine technology.”
$15M RAISED TO REPLACE CHEMICAL HERBICIDES
RootWave, the UK-based pioneer in electrical weed control, has successfully raised $15 million to scale its sustainable, chemicalfree solution for eliminating weeds – including herbicide-resistant varieties – using electricity.
The round was led by Clay Capital, a specialist food and agriculture venture fund, with participation from Agri Investment Fund – the investment arm of the Belgian collective Boerenbond Group – as well as vineyard-focused Xinomavro Ventures, Naruhisa Nakagawa, founder and CIO of Caygan Capital, Jorge Heraud, former CEO and Co-founder of Blue River Technology (acquired by John Deere), and returning investors V-Bio Ventures, Rabo Ventures and PYMWYMIC. The round includes $3 million in debt facilities provided by Innovate UK as part of the UK’s Future Economy initiative.
At a time when agrifoodtech investment has fallen to its lowest levels in five years, RootWave’s success underscores the urgent demand for sustainable agriculture solutions.
The $40+ billion herbicide industry is facing unprecedented challenges from herbicide-resistant weeds and tightening regulation due to safety concerns. While alternative solutions such as mechanical, laser, and thermal weeding have emerged, RootWave stands out for its unmatched combination of efficacy, cost competitiveness, and safety. Its market leading technology eliminates weeds without damaging soils or crops, with field performance rivalling that of chemical herbicides.
RootWave manufactures tractor-mounted implements using its patented high-frequency electricity that delivers exceptional performance, achieving up to 99% kill rates in a single pass during independent field trials. Compatible with conventional, regenerative and organic farming systems, the technology helps farmers protect yields and profits while safeguarding human health and the environment.
RootWave has commercial sales in the UK and has also secured international manufacturing and distribution agreements, including a partnership with leading mechanical weeding company, Garford Farm Machinery. The company is actively conducting trials with several other agrimachinery manufacturers to expand distribution across Europe, with plans to enter the US market thereafter. RootWave’s electrical weeding technology is suitable for a wide range of crops from tree, bush and vine crops, to row crops including vegetables, broad-acre, and cereals.
‘SPOT SPRAYING’ WITHOUT AN EXPENSIVE CAMERA SYSTEM
Any Horsch Leeb sprayer with AutoSelect, the well-proven automatic nozzle control system, can ‘spot spray’ with data fed from a drone sweep of the field. This removes the need to have an expensive camera system mounted to the sprayer or tractor.
“We’re seeing some confusion in the industry. Horsch has been offering this system for the past two years, but it should be noted this is really ‘patch spraying’ as opposed to true ‘spot spraying’ which targets individual weeds. We are working hard on that too, but nobody can truly offer Green-on-Green spot spraying yet despite the term becoming more encompassing,” said Stephen Burcham, General Manager at Horsch UK.
“AutoSelect has been available to customers since we started selling sprayers, so the vast majority of our
customers can take advantage of our proven selective spraying technology. Working with application maps, it offers a significant reduction in chemical use without incurring further prohibitive costs,” added Mr Burcham.
Using drones to map the weed population
ahead of spraying ensures the operator can mix the correct amount of chemical in the sprayer’s tank for the chosen application. This is a major advantage over real-time analysis for spot and patch spraying, which could leave significant levels of chemical in the sprayer at the end of the application.
PRECISION MAPPING WITH DRONES
Horsch has been working with Agrovista as a supplier of drone mapping and precision services. Richard Dulake, Precision Services Technical Manager at Agrovista explained the process. “During the summer months, our Soil Sampling Team can turn their hands to drone operation. We have 10 sophisticated drones that can map our customers’ fields and create Green-on-Green data maps highlighting areas of weed growth.
“Some manual input is required in identifying the weed areas but once two or three areas have been highlighted, our AI software takes over and identifies all areas with either multiple or single plants. The spraying area is reduced to the smallest possible, but we usually use a minimum of 1m grids.”
Application maps instruct sprayers with nozzle and section control to apply chemical only where necessary. Two types of application maps are available: point and radius, and polygon.
The more sophisticated ‘point and radius’ marks the centre of a weed population and draws a small circle to create a map of overlapping circular spray areas. “These maps supply far more data points, and the radius can be edited to allow for weed growth, for example, if there’s been a few days of rain since the field scan,” added Mr Dulake.
The polygon data map creates a more rigid set of shapes that highlight weed growth areas. These have less data points but are more compatible with older control terminals.
HORSCH EOST10 TERMINAL FOR POINT & RADIUS DATA MAPS
Introduced at Agritechnica 2023, the Horsch eosT10 and eosT10 Pro is a new generation of terminal focused on performance and an intuitive user experience. The high-resolution, touchbased 10-inch colour display terminal is ISOBUS-compliant to the ISO 11783 standard.
The high-performance hardware has comprehensive storage capacity and offers
high speed even when processing large amounts of data. Application maps can be uploaded wirelessly and the ISOBUS SectionControl function can operate one boom and up to 120 sections, and is included in the standard version.
Customers with the eosT10 terminal can use the more data-intensive point and radius maps that allow a more targeted application of chemicals.
PATCH AND SPOT SPRAYING
There is intensive focus on selective spraying to make plant protection even more efficient. True spot spraying means that the individual plant is assessed and treated allowing sprays to be used in an even more efficient and effective way.
The objective is to develop the new technology to meet the different environmental conditions and
requirements of the farmers around the world. Green-on-Brown (GOB) plays a major role in dry regions, such as Australia, to remove individual weeds from the stubbles. Green-on-Green (GOG) is far more difficult to implement due to the small differentiation between weeds and emergent crops and is proving a challenge for experts across the agricultural industry. GOG is important in northern Europe, for example, for the application of herbicides or fungicides. Spot spraying GOG relies on sophisticated camera systems processing data in real time and is currently expensive and inconsistent. Patch spraying brings much of the benefits at a far lower price point that is easier to implement. AutoSelect enables a single boom section to be activated, just one or two metres rather than the entire boom, to ensure chemicals are only applied to that patch.
ENHANCED PERFORMANCE, INTELLIGENT CONNECTIVITY
John Deere is pleased to announce the launch of its next generation of fixed and variable chamber round balers, designed to deliver superior performance, intelligent connectivity and high-quality bales. The new series offers increased productivity, advanced automation and user-friendly features. These innovations are aimed at providing farmers with highly efficient and reliable solutions for their baling needs.
CONNECTED INTELLIGENCE
All models of the new generation of round balers from John Deere are equipped with advanced ISOBUS capabilities, ensuring complete machine integration into the John Deere Operations Center™. This intelligent connection ensures that farmers can monitor bale quality on the go and thus operate more efficiently in the field. The connectivity feature allows for seamless synchronisation and secure storage of all invoicing-relevant
information when leaving the field. Additionally, an optional moisture monitoring feature measures the average moisture per bale in real-time and alerts the operator on the tractor display if the moisture content deviates from the pre-defined setting. Tracking each bale’s size, drop location, moisture levels and documenting this data in the John Deere Operations Center™ offers information such as the number of bales per field and dry-matter maps.
WEAVE AUTOMATION FOR EXCEPTIONAL DRIVER COMFORT
The variable chamber models V452R and V462R boast a 15% increase in driveline power intake, translating to an 8% increase in productivity in the field. The innovative weave automation feature includes a flexible drawbar so the baler can automatically weave over the windrow. When following a straight windrow the system eliminates the need for manual weaving and automatically
guides the baler left and right along the windrow - depending on the chamber filling, creating consistently well-shaped bales. In addition, the active hitch automatically follows curved windrows, even in corners. The baler precisely tracks the windrow, eliminating missed crop and reducing tractor manoeuvres. Also, the tighter turning radius makes manoeuvring the baler easier. The fast bale release system allows for unloading a bale and closing the gate in just three seconds, while the double-belt system compresses crops up to 140kg/ m³, a 7% increase compared to previous models, ensuring impressive bale density performance.
OPTIONAL BUILT-IN WEIGHING SYSTEM
The wrapping baler models C442R, C452R and C462R are designed to produce high-quality silage. These models feature an optional built-in bale weighing system
with advanced strength gauges on each of the four transport table rollers, allowing for on-the-go measurement of each bale’s weight. With a wrapping arm speed of 40rpm, the wrapper components match the baler's productivity, avoiding any time loss during the baling process. The ISOBUS AUX-N control enables operators to map multifunction joystick buttons so the driver can control the main baler functions via the CommandPROTM lever.
COMPACT AND VERSATILE
The variable chamber models V452M and V462M offer a 10% increase in driveline power intake, resulting in up to an 8% increase in productivity. The new endless belts with rougher skin design ensures reliable net feeding even in sticky, wet crop conditions. Valid for all new round baler models is the hydraulically actuated knife engagement. With this feature the operator will enjoy more comfort when engaging or retracting the knives from the cab, while the higher knife engagement force makes sure
all crop gets consistently cut. Maintenance is made easy with simple access points, long greasing intervals, and a chain autolube system. The G5e touchscreen provides intuitive operation, and baler automation allows for hands-free unloading, enhancing overall ease of use.
“With this new generation of round balers,
we are delivering more than just power and productivity,” said Philippe Steinmann, Product Marketing Manager Europe at John Deere. “We are giving farmers a smarter, more connected baling experience, one that combines automation, precision, and exceptional comfort to help them get the most out of every field and every bale.”
IRELANDS FARM MACHINERY TAKES ON DISTRIBUTION OF ENERGREEN MACHINES
Lincolnshire-based Irelands Farm Machinery has taken over the distribution rights for the Energreen range of selfpropelled vegetation mowers (SPV) covering an area that extends from the Scottish borders, down to London.
The agreement includes sales, service and support for new and existing Energreen machinery, with an extensive stock of genuine parts available from all three of Irelands’ depots, which are located at Carrington, Sutterton and Market Rasen in Lincolnshire. In addition, Irelands Farm Machinery will also be helping Energreen SPA to establish a dealer network for the remainder of the UK.
“We’re extremely pleased to have added the Energreen SPV range alongside our existing premium brands,” explained Daryl Dunn, Irelands Farm Machinery’s sales and product manager for the Energreen range. “As a professional vegetation management tool for environmental, railways and highways sectors, the Energreen range is geared towards the maintenance of any green area.”
Built in Poiana Maggiore near Vicenza, Italy, the hydrostatic, four-wheel drive SPV
range comprises four models from 143hp to 220hp, and with telescopic booms from 5.7m to 17m. Depending on the model, a swivelling cab and multifunction capability with front and rear linkage and front PTO, can also be specified.
Energreen also provides a wide range of attachments for use with its SPV models. Alongside flail mowers and pulverisers, choices include saw bars, shears, cutterbars, rotary brushes, stump grinders, grapples and grabs. In addition, river buckets, ditching buckets and barrier
mowers are also available.
“We’re already familiar with the Energreen product, having sold the range for several years under a previous brand,” explained Mr Dunn. “Our staff have had comprehensive training at the factory, to further prepare our business for the full integration of Energreen products.”
Irelands Farm Machinery will be running demonstration days with the Energreen Alpha and Kommunal SPV models on Wednesday 16 and Thursday 17 July at PE22 7HX, almost adjacent to its Carrington depot.
CUSTOMER-FOCUSED SOLUTIONS
It may be a relatively new player when it comes to supplying vineyard equipment, but Chichester-based Vitimech has made its intentions clear from day one.
The increasing success being enjoyed by English wines has seen a huge increase in the amount of land given over to vineyards across the South East.
For farmers, the temptation to look for a piece of the action by taking a suitable area of gently sloping, south-facing land and converting it to growing grapes can be strong, but it’s not an easy decision.
Establishing the vines and caring for them for the first few years comes with a significant cost, and while the future rewards may be temptingly high, the first few years can be expensive, not least in terms of the specialist machinery needed.
Step forward Vitimech, a relatively new player in the world of viticulture but one with a mission to ease the transition from farmer to grape grower by providing a cost-effective package of machinery that will do an excellent job at an affordable price, without compromising on quality.
Vitimech, which has the backing of long-established parent company Chichester Farm Machinery, headed up by managing director Lewis Ramm, has made its intentions clear from day one by focusing on high end viticulture machinery manufacturers Collard and Calvet, both renowned for innovative designs and strong build quality.
And while the viticulture side of the business was only established last September, Chichester Farm Machinery has many years’ experience in supplying, repairing, servicing and providing parts for a wide range of other quality equipment.
Farmers and growers were given a taste of the new vineyardfocused equipment alongside the existing groundscare ranges at a well-attended open day held at the companies’ base at Leythorne Nurseries just outside Chichester, in the heart of the South East’s wine growing area.
Alongside Collard and Calvet machinery, visitors were able to chat to staff about Chichester Farm Machinery’s wide range of kit, including mowers, trailers, compact tractors, mulchers and telehandlers, as well as Bomford Turner’s impressive Flailbot.
Crucially, one of the highlights of the open day was a selection from the vast Avant range, a versatile loader-cum-multitool that Vitimech sales manager James Brett believes is an ideal bridge between agriculture and viticulture.
The flexibility of the Avant range has inspired James to put together a package of equipment that is designed to support new vineyard owners, particularly those who are looking to enter the industry from a farming, rather than a city, background.
Sofiane Dahou from Calvet
Managing director Lewis Ramm
The idea is to fit an Avant 760 loader with a Collard LZP polyvalent frame that can then be used with a vine trimmer, leaf remover or pre-pruner.
“That gives a smaller vineyard, perhaps one that represents a farm diversification, all the equipment needed to establish and care for the vines, plus a flexible loader and multi tool, for about the same cost as a high-end vineyard tractor,” James pointed out.
Central to this plan are Chichester Farm Machinery’s talented team of in-house designers who can adapt a wide range of vineyard machinery to be mounted on the impressive Avant range, which can already be fitted with around 200 pieces of equipment.
One open day visitor, long-standing customer Jack Newcombe of JN TreeCare, described his Avant as “a game changer”, adding: “I use it every day and wouldn’t be without it.” He uses the loader with everything from a mulching head to a bucket, forks, a rotating head for tipping IBCs and a road sweeper.
Vitimech was set up in response to customers asking for replacement parts for Collard machines bought direct from the French manufacturer, inventor of the world’s first vine trimmer in 1962. Not only did Collard make Vitimech its sole UK distributor, it introduced the company to Calvet, a leading sprayer manufacturer with a well-deserved reputation.
Chichester Farm Machinery supplies a wide range of other machinery including Teagle flails, mowers and spreaders, Bomford Turner and Kirogn hedge trimmers, Stiga ride-on mowers, Grasshopper zero-turn mowers, Iseki compact tractors and Marshall trailers, including one designed with central wheels to suit the pivot-steer Avants.
