AFFORDABLE VERSATILE DRILLING?

Sumo began development of its DTS ‘Deep Tillage Seeder’ drills back in 2007, with production models reaching the market in 2011. The DTS replaced the Versadrill, a joint venture between well-established direct drill maker Moore Unidrill, and Sumo. The ‘strip tillage’ DTS is a completely different design from its predecessor and is becoming an increasingly popular choice in the used market.

Before looking at the DTS, it is worth taking a step back to the Sumo Versadrill. At launch, some described these drills as ‘just’ a Moore Unidrill with a different hopper and a Sumo soil loosening toolbar up front. Not quite the whole story but near enough. As the name suggests, the 3.0m and 4.0m mounted and 4.0m to 6.0m trailed Versadrill was and remains a versatile bit

of kit, suitable for both ‘min-till’ and direct drilling. The caveat is that this versatility can be compromised in certain soils and conditions. Hence the development of the Sumo DTS, early prototypes of which had been undergoing field trials from as early as 2007.

for those with the improved soil structures suited to direct drilling. In broad outline a DTS will drill into land that has been more ‘traditionally’ cultivated, to include ploughed ground, and will particularly suit those who are making the move through minimal tillage but are yet to have established the soil structures necessary to transition fully to direct drilling with a disc coulter system.

Basic design of DTS drill toolbar remains true to the original concept, with disc, leg, coulter, covering discs and press wheel layout. Land drilled by a DTS is claimed to progressively improve soil structure, with users progressively moving to direct drilling with models to include the Sumo DD.

WHAT’S USED

Double laminated coulter body mounts were fitted from 2016 to resist twisting and misalignment problems and to address potential fracturing. Revised design is a direct retrofit to earlier DTS drills. When looking over a used DTS, check for repairs or damage and play in the pivot points.

DTS drills made from 2016 have alternate different length tool frame coulter mounting brackets to increase stagger. Bolt-on extension brackets to fit earlier DTS drills are available and may have already been fitted to a used buy. This modification will be an easy spot.

SUMO

DTS6 6.0M TRAILED

Year: 2014

Condition: Above average. 950ha

Comment: Grain / fertiliser 3,600 litre hopper. Orga metering. Tungsten tipped leading tines. Bout markers. Price reflects condition and low use.

Price point: £38,950

The thinking is, that over time, land drilled with a strip coulter drill like the DTS will benefit from improved soil structure, allowing a move to a minimal disturbance direct drilling. It has been suggested that many Sumo DD users have moved from a DTS as their soil structures have ‘improved’.

CONCEPT UNCHANGED

While the basic operating principle of the DTS drill has remained the same, Sumo has refined the concept year after year, leading to continued improvements. Some developments are a possible retrofit to some earlier models, a point to consider if you find an early DTS in its ‘original’ form, but any DTS drill in good order will still get the job done. The difference will be that models from around 2016 have improved trash clearance and as time has progressed the drills have been built to cope with a

more powerful tractor up front and, by default, cope with faster working speeds. Other changes Sumo has made to drills are summarised in the table on page 28 and shown in the picture captions. Possible upgrades are also listed with the caveat that what can and cannot be changed may be dependent upon any previous changes that may have been made and when the drill was originally manufactured.

SUMMARY

None of the design changes made to the DTS are radical, but detail tweaks over time will make those who have experience using an original model notice a significant difference between these and current drills. This will include the switch from a license-built Moore metering unit to the Sumo Omega pressurised hopper system from 2013 and the big boost in trash clearance from 2015.

Stocks

TurboJet i-con applicators offered as a factory fit option from around 2022, with toolbar mounting for drills of up to 4.0m and on the hopper for the 6.0m models and above.

METERING UNITS AND CONTROL

Sumo fitted its own license-built version of the proven Moore metering unit to DTS drills up until the introduction of its own auger Orga metering system in 2013. This had more to do with capacity than any problem with the Moore units, these remaining a sound design in terms of accuracy. It’s important to note that early Moore metering units used in the Versadrill may lack parts support from Sumo and its dealers.

With reference to controllers, the two main types offered by Sumo are the variable rate RDS Pro Series 8000i and from 2015 the RDS iSOSCAN Artemis drill control system. The latter is more advanced and can be linked to features to include blockage sensors. Artemis controllers are ISOBUS compatible which can mean a used buy may not be supplied with a dedicated control screen and so rely upon a tractor’s ISO display to set up.

When looking over a DTS, it pays to check the metering units, running through a drill calibration check to help identify any problems in the metering drive. Also look for corrosion and damage, particularly on combination drills. If you can run up the pneumatic blower it will help show up any problems and leaks in the seed / fertiliser hose runs.

Is that it? No, far from it. As a used DTS buyer the main point is to establish the actual specification of the drill you are buying and not to assume that it will be the same as when the drill was made. It may also have third-party wearing metal fitted and any GPS system originally fitted may have been removed or need updating. As with items of used equipment, it is down to you to check specifications and ask as many questions as you can and not make assumptions.

The Moore metering system, pictured on a Versadrill (left)is reliable and accurate but may be worn and need increasingly scarce repair parts. Sumo Orga metering has a higher capacity, with a dual units for grain and fertiliser. The core design of the Orga system has not altered but the method of control has evolved as you would expect. The Orga system should have larger and smaller metering gears and auger inserts to suit different seeds.

Sumo have stuck with RDS for its controllers, an increasing number of DTS buyers using a tractor’s ISO controls to look after the drill, rather than using a separate Artemis screen. When considering a used DTS, it pays to have the control system checked over and to make sure the Pro Series display has a clear screen and that all the buttons operate. Later Artemis screens (right) are obviously younger but hook them up to check everything functions.

The RDS control screens come in several different designs but all should be checked for pixelation of the display and worn control buttons. If you jiggle the wiring

harness leading to the drill and display it will help show up any loose connections or damage within the wiring or plug connectors.

Trailed DTS drills were originally offered with 3,000 litre hopper, this increasing to 3,600 litre as an option soon after launch. From 2024, a 5,000 litre hopper became an option for all drills of 4.0m and above.

Tool bar 3.0m DTS drills were offered with the front mounted hopper from the latter’s launch in 2014. This combination is popular on continental markets.

Early two-section 9.0m DTS drill, a design that aims to reduce the space needed to make a headland turn. Fitted with Moore metering units, these drills were offered from 2010 in pre-production form, production starting in 2011. These drills will be a rare find in the UK but helped cement popularity of DTS drills on the continent.

WHAT ABOUT A VERSADRILL?

The trailed Sumo Versadrill was made between 2009 and 2011 in collaboration with Moore Unidrill. Designed to work in ground that is cultivated through to being also able to direct drill into stubble, the key Unidrill design feature was its bank of winged soil-loosening tines up front. Mounted on their own toolbar, these can be run to a depth of up to 300mm and can be folded up and out of work for direct drilling. The seeding units run on semi-pneumatic tyres running ahead of disc-coulters, with following cast press-wheels.

The trailed Versadrill was offered in 4.0m, 6.0m and 8.0m versions, with a low claimed power requirement of just 180hp for the 4.0m model.

Sumo had a fair degree of success with the Versadrill, with used

examples attracting a decent following. Sumo no longer offers parts support for these modes, with potential problems obtaining some items for the metering units. Wearing metal should be available with good third-party support.

The rear depth wheels were all resin filled as standard up until around 2017 from when it became a cost option.

It has been difficult to decide what sales to report this month as there have been so many of them, we even have a report on tractor models, of all things, to give you a taste of this side of the agricultural sales scene. Please remember we quote the hammer price not with commission and VAT.

This month also sees a review of Tractor World which took place at the Three Counties Showground over 21-22 February and although it was wet underfoot it stayed dry as such and the sun came out on the Sunday.

Congratulations to all the many exhibitors and traders at this event. It only seems like yesterday that I created the show 25 years ago now. On Easter Day I will be in Cornwall on the 2026 National Vintage Tractor Road Run at St Merryn Airfield, Padstow PL28 8PT and the organisers have kindly found me a Fordson E1A Major to drive on the run! There are over 400 tractors entered for this famous event which moves around the UK each year. I will tell you more about this adventure in the next issue.

RECORD CROWD AT TRACTOR WORLD

Despite the soft ground conditions and snow on the Malvern hills on the Thursday before the show, the weather turned out dry and unseasonably warm over 21-22 February even though it was still rather wet underfoot. At least the Three Counties Showground has plenty of hard standing including some of its car parks.

It came in very handy particularly for the outside exhibits where the stationary engines were positioned this year in a new spot opposite the JCB plant and construction display. In fact there were restored JCB examples along with Julian Carder’s Steelfab backhoe/loader that was made in Wales and based on a Ford 5000 skid unit and was a major 2025 award winner at the show.

Ferguson TE-20 no. 74 grade 4 made a record price of £12,200 to create a world record at the Tractor World sale

Now in its 25th year Tractor World saw the advanced ticket sales well up on last year and it was the same on the Sunday which saw a record crowd attend. The halls were packed inside and out with tractor space sold out before Christmas and if you tried to book late unfortunately you could not get in.

The H J Pugh Saturday sale saw a world record price paid for a very early Ferguson TE-20 no. 74 grade 4 which sold for £12,200, a price that would not be surpassed at the huge Mourne sale the following Saturday. A 1964 Massey Ferguson 35X grade 5 sold for £10,200, and similar money was paid for the restored MF 175 Multi-Power at £10,200. The MF 1200 artic got to £37,000 and the 1989 Ford 7810 II four-wheel drive sold for £19,500 a good price as we have seen better. The 1983

International 1255XL four-wheel drive with 7,872 hours moved on at £22,000 and the 1455XL four-wheel drive raised £34,000.

While this was going on the largest selection of trade stands for a show of this type in the UK was seeing good business. There were coach loads of visitors from the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, France and Holland who certainly swelled the crowds.

Walking through the Avon Halls from top to bottom visitors were greeted with the Antique Caterpillar Chapter 2 display put together by Ben Smalley and featured outside Graham Frances’ lovely Cat 941B and inside various machines like the Alex Hebb’s Cat R2 and Alister Cutts 1931 Cat Ten. There were so many clubs here with displays and many were

The winner in this section was the NVTEC East Anglia stand which of course hosts the Stradsett Hall rally the first weekend in May (which featured in this column last month and I heartily recommend) and the traditional Carrington Park rally near Boston, Lincolnshire which is to feature Minneapolis Moline on the late May bank holiday weekend. They had two Prairie Gold tractors on the stand, Darren Creasey and his rare MM V which started off as a 1939 Cletrac company project, later BF Avery and MM along the line produced the design. This tractor went on to be a show winner and the MM ZTS of Owen Gilman looked a treat here as well.

Moving along was the Ford and Fordson Association with the Jonathan Boaz 1929 Ford AA shunter original looking a treat as did his 1925 Fordson F with Rowe Line rear control with mower attachment which had not been shown for some while. Looking proud was the blue and correctly painted Myth Holm 131 which is the last version as such for the Muir-Hill line which we are used to seeing in a yellow livery.

On the opposite side was the David Brown Club with its founder Martin George in charge and featuring Robert Speakman’s previously award winning 770. The Richard Dunning organised IH Harvester Club of GB stand looked very impressive with James Hamilton’s IH WD9 with Perkins P6 standing out.

The Walters/Severn Vale Vintage section was looked after by Lee Hartwell and was more impressive than ever with the Andrew Walters 1978 Ford County built 8100 two-wheel drive, such a great restoration

standing out and again was an award winner.

As I walked further into the new hall that opened last year, the line of John Deeres, mostly classics, looked splendid. David Kerr’s ex east Kent Drake and Fletcher supplied 3120 looking such a gem, was an award winner here just as it was at Newark in November 2025 and rightly so after lots of hassle restoring it.

The Anderson family had gone to so much effort creating a Kent hop garden scene which was amazing and so realistic. It featured the Drake and Fletcher supplied Weeks of Maidstone hop garden conversion Ferguson Brown A in the 800 number series all in its working clothes.

The FOFH display was arranged by John Plowright as a 70th celebration of the 1st October 1956 introduction of the ‘new’ Ferguson FE35 grey and gold. The display took the form of a recreation of the October 1956 George Henderson of Kelso and Edinburgh Ferguson dealer show when they introduced the FE35 grey and gold to staff and customers. At the time the occasion was all well recorded on black and white film which is available to watch on YouTube. >>

EVENT SCENE

Originally the tractor was unpacked out of the wooden packing case and the hinged boards were then hoisted up either side of the tractor with sign written information about the new six-speed tractor. The grey and gold was then driven out of the packing case and it is all fully illustrated in the film.

When you arrived at the FOFH stand you had no idea what was in the large packing case it didn’t look spectacular that is until the FOFH replicated the Henderson film. It was a great honour to be invited to give the commentary for the ceremony which happened three times over the duration of the show. On the first occasion I cut the ribbon (later others cut the ribbon) then described to the packed crowd what was going on and the opening of the box and why, when and how.

Naturally John’s ex Danish 5 October 1956 made petrol only FE35 looked a treat, but it had to be pushed out of the box as it could not be run indoors. It was certainly the star event at the show and John attributes the idea of it all to FOFH vice-chairman Wayne Wedlock who was part of the team here.

The FOFH have now been asked to take the outfit to the Stradsett rally for the early May bank holiday weekend, it will then appear at Tractor Fest, Ripon in early June and will lastly be at the Newark Tractor Show in November so do make a date and enjoy.

With such good weather on the Sunday the crowd stayed to the end, as I made my way out I picked up from Rye Oils two five litres of 20/50 oil for just £20 each what a bargain and part of their show offer. I then headed to the car park with my hands full. My four hour journey home had certainly been well worth the effort. On my arrival home in East Sussex I was informed that it had rained all day!

Over 27-28 February H J Pugh held the 2,678 lot Ferguson – Massey Ferguson, Mourne Collection, disposal sale at their HQ at Ledbury which was packed with people both days of the sale and on various viewing days before.

The collection had been moved over from Northern Ireland in early January to Herefordshire and placed in a special marquee and in the main buildings. There were to be 78 tractors from the collection in the sale here. There were many painted examples (not all the same shade of grey and red when you got down to it closely) and perhaps the sale had too many Ferguson TE-A and TE-Ds in it, but they sold well for what they were with a raft of records along the way.

It all started with the 1973 Massey Ferguson 12 garden tractor, which mostly sold in the North American market, and this original example sold well for £3,900. The 1975 Massey Ferguson Whirlwind snow mobile raised £4,000 grade 3.

The lovely Ferguson dealer livered 1960 registered Standard 10 6cwt van looked better than the last time I saw it with the gearbox now sorted out. It sold for £13,100, remembering it is a replica and perhaps should really be in the later Massey Ferguson livery like the example that attended Tractor World in 2025.

Taking a dip to a more realistic price level was the 1938 Ferguson Brown A no. 949 grade 5 that sold for £24,000 with lovely enclosed 22in rear enclosed pattern tyres. The delightful clean and restored Ford Ferguson 9N narrow which I conclude was an import at one time sold for £5,800. No one fancied the rare Irish used Ford Ferguson 2N with Howard reduction box in restored standard, at £2,800 a bargain price. The genuine Ford 8N Funk/Eagle 8N six-cylinder conversion, which I saw sold in the USA decades ago for $2,300, it sold here for £3,800. It really needs going right through and could be a fine machine in more ways than one and would make a good road run tractor with plenty of torque and speed.

After the previous weeks Tractor World sale record price of over £12,000 for TE-20 no. 74 with its great history, I came across four TE examples all good. However there were all different colours of grey but each good in its way. The first no. 203 sold for £4,800 with some lovely enclosed pattern tyres grade 5. The next was a clean original, again with enclosed tyres no. 745 and was knocked down at £3,200. The third with no declared number (restored) that really needed some new rear tyres made £4,000 and the last a well known Northern Ireland example no. 11459 grade 5 went on to make £7,700.

A glut of TE-A and TE-Ds began with

£4,000 paid for a 1947 example no. 16140 all restored. The made up Ferguson TE-A with Perkins P3 with said to be Selene front axle all painted looking good made a heart stopping £26,000 and brought the earlier lots into profit. Further on some £5,200 was shelled out for a restored TE-A example with going rusty banana loader and bucket fitted.

Some of the French tractors struggled with the original Banner Lane made TE-C no.26194 narrow which looked clean, and together, selling for £2,000. The UK used TE-C no. 89387 with Perkins P3 fitted; a painted example was yours at only £3,400, yet the 1949 TE-A P3 original created a new record price at £5,000. A restored 1953 TE-D with Perkins P3 made similar which again is a record price for one of these tractors.

A Ferguson hub capped 1952 TE-C with Howard reduction box that came from Norway where it was used on cemetery work was yours at £3,500 tractor all together and restored. Bombardier tracked examples came

1938 Ferguson Brown A type no. 949 sold for £24,000 on the day and the charity MF 35 sold for £13,000

and went with the 1951 painted TE-A being moved on at £7,800. Next came a restored 1951 Reekie TE-D conversion no. 232424 which I have seen sold twice before raised £4,800 and a 1951 TE-D Lenfield narrow conversion no. 232832 with Kent registration OKL707 was knocked down for £4,000.

Then came a 1954 TE-F no. 386007 all restored sold for a record £15,000 and the rare 1956 Reekie cabbed TE-F no. 509354 restored, £6,500. The original clean all together 1955 TE-D sold at a £6,200 which was a good price. The restored French FF30DS no. 42399 was yours at £3,800 and the similar condition 1956 FF30 petrol vineyard went on to sell for £6,800 another record price.

Next came three 1957 Ferguson FE35 grey and gold’s, all different variations of the gold, the two diesel examples sold for £15,700. The well restored p/p version made £6,200. Big bucks were in order to purchase the very well detailed and restored Ferguson FE-35 diesel industrial that raised a stomping £33,000 again a record price. This applied also to the 1962 Massey Ferguson 35 no. JNM288236 industrial at an amazing £56,000. (Yes you did read this correctly.)

Made across the water, the 1964 MF 25 with 3,064 hours and mid-mounted mower original sold for £5,200 another record and a very clean original at that. Some £13,000 was paid for a MF 35 diesel with the funds donated to NI Cancer Fund For Children. Various 35s came and went and the MF 203 industrial restored with front loader was to sell for £8,800. The cracking Detroit made cream and silver Ferguson 40 gas with PAVT rear wheels looking a treat has a new owner at £6,500.

These two industrial tractors sold for a record £89,000

for £13,000. Good prices were paid for the 65 restored examples. The best in the restored 135s was £15,500 for a 1966 example that stood out and the not so nice later example did well at £14,000. Surprisingly the restored narrow 135 made a record £11,000. The original 1975 135 with Scirroco cab was got away at £16,500. As for the restored 1973 Four Wheel Drive Co 135 with Sekura cab a thumping £46,000 was paid, having been sold last time for £11,000 in Scotland.

The French built 145 restored was got away at a good £12,000. Another amazing price was paid for the 1971 MF 148 with Flexi cab at £45,000 it had sold the last time for, I believe, a record £21,000, what a wise buy! Another record price was the two-wheel drive 1975 MF 188 with Flexi cab restored at £17,500. The 174C crawler was got away at £17,000 slightly down on what it sold for last October. Very near the end we came across at flashy looking 1984 MF 240 with a non-original cab which made a record £21,500.

Four more lots to go with the 1989 MF 390 two-wheel drive with LoProfile no. 24383 which had been given the full works and was got away at £22,250. As for the 1993 390T four-wheel drive again looking a stunner – yours at £42,000 a record for a restored example remembering an original 390T made more a few years ago! The 1989 MF 1010 with loader and roll bar original made £6,500 and finally a very mat looking basic 1959 Ford 900 V rowcrop with petrol engine sold for £3,200. All in all some £843,000 was raised from the tractor family lots here giving an average price of £10,537 which is encouraging. Many of the tractors did not carry paperwork which in some cases affected prices, you might have a shiny tractor, but if it is short of provenance and no paperwork including a current V5c it can have a negative effect on its end value and perhaps was proved here in some cases. However at the end of the day various new record prices were achieved all through the sale, never forget the market is tough out there, but this sale proves yet again if you have the right thing it will sell well you cannot expect a record for every lot, but there were plenty.

MAJOR TRACTOR MODEL SALE

On Friday 27 February in the warm HJ Pugh upper showroom at their HQ at Ledbury, Herefordshire the Mourne 799 tractor model collection came up predominantly made up of Britains products with some Universal Hobbies and a few others chucked in. Most of the collection was ‘mint’ and, in most cases, had never been taken out their boxes. It was a wonderful experience looking at this collection that was mostly featuring offerings produced over the last 30 years or so. It brought back memories as visitors looked at the models that they had owned in their youth and are now serious collectors items today.

All the major makes were featured in this vast collection and good prices were achieved. However it was the rare items that made the money, not so much individual

The top lot in the Mourne model collection was these three industrial box sets at £800

makes with the rare Britains Autoway industrial collection of three boxed lots sold as one for £800. Deutz Fahr box sets featured very well, again because of their rarity. The GM Farm Models 1:16 scale Ferguson Brown A no. 48 in the 100 made series went on to sell for £420 and the opening lot was a Brian Norman Farm Models 1:32 scale MF 1200 at £420 spot on its current value.

Ford was perhaps the most popular individual make featured with the battery powered Britains Power Farmer box sets doing very well in their German boxes.

The white coloured County 1188 with New Holland baler coming out on tops at £480. Again collectors were looking for the rare models here when £500 was paid for the Britains models no. 9639 Renault 155-54 set with no. 9591 Fiat 880 set all part of the lot. Some £460 was forked out for the Ford

7000 with cultivator which Britains sold with weathering affect on the tractor and cultivator. The Britains MB trac 1500 with loader wagon and Deutz baler set at £360 and the no.9595 Mercedes Benz Unimog with Vicon spreader and the breakdown version sold for £380. All in all it was a very successful model sale which did well for the vendor that’s for sure. Here are the top 26 lot results.

Going back in time was the farms feed tractor in a 1987 John Deere 2140 two-wheel drive which had the clutch replaced in 2023 sold for £7,362. Some £20,441 was paid for the 2007 John Deere 6330 with 10,757 hours on the clock. The lovely and fine 1990 John Deere 1177 combine with 14ft header and 2700 hours raised a good £15,244.

On Friday 20 February Halls held the Hanley Hall, Weirbrook, Oswestry, Shropshire dispersal sale that featured a fleet of six John Deeres and a T6601 Hullmaster combine. Mains power was off in this area the week of the sale, so generators had to be brought in and there were problems with the internet connection on sale day which caused problems for bidders and reporters and the rain did not help the connection as well, but the Halls team did their best under difficult circumstances.

Despite these problems the tractors sold very well indeed and that applied to the two tractors of special interest the 1993 John Deere 4755 four-wheel drive L807GRX with 9,017 hours on the clock. Looking very straight and well maintained it sold for a record £48,000. The following 1994 John Deere 4955 M109CNH with 7,945 hours went on to sell for a thumping £61,000 yet another record price.

Cheffins continued their strong run of online sales when they concluded the David Maskell agricultural contractors sale at Pepperhill, Albrighton on Friday 6 March. The tractor stock was made up of John Deeres dating from 2016-2022 all in very good condition.

It started with the 2022 6215R Autopowr (IVT) Command which raised £90,000 the similar 2021 example raised £81,000. It was followed by the 2019 6215R at £59,000 and the 2018 similar 6215R £51,000. The last two were 6155R Autopowr’s and the 2020 model

header for the same machine £17,500. The two John Deere JF633R loaders looked good and the 2016 example was yours at £6,800 and 2022 £13,000. All in all strong prices from the clean stock was the name of the game.

The vendor at Waterlooville, Hampshire has carefully been buying classic tractors with low hours in clean condition and called in Cheffins to sell them with the online sale finishing on Thursday 5 March. It turned out to be a hugely successful venture when you get down to it. First on was a 2011 John Deere 7530 Premiun AutoQuad 50k, AU11BWW with 2,165 hours, sold for an impressive £108,000. Later on the 2002 John Deere 7810 AutoQuad OWO2WKV with 5,759 hours again a clean machine sold for £51,500. Another 7810 AutoQuad DG53BVF with 9,577 hours came up this time from 2003 which made even more at £59,000.

As for the mighty high specification 2008 John Deere 7930 AutoQuad FX08HND which had 8,555 hours on the clock some £59,000 was coughed up in the end. Moving back to 1997 the John Deere 6506 PowrQuad R181JKH and 4,225 hours went on to sell for £34,500 not the most popular JD for its time when you get down to it, making it rare these days in the UK. The last of the John Deeres was the ex French supplied 1997 4755 no. 010113 with 9,539 hours that was got away at £44,000.

The big one on the day was the 1990 MB trac 1600 turbo at £120,000

We then came to the 1990 MB trac 1600 turbo H171XFL with 5,565 hours with all the bells and whistles selling for £120,000 yet another record even though when watching the video the engine omits blue smoke. The second MB trac here was a 1999 MB trac 1400 turbo with 9,028 hours which raised a stunning £86,000 yet another record.

The 2010 Fendt 820 Vario WX10AMU with Fendt Cargo 5X90 front loader with really low hours on the clock went on to sell for an amazing £134,000. The 2012 Fendt 820 Vario TMS VX12BLV with 11,796 hours which had recently been given the works sold for £46,000. Later on a 1997 Fendt 824 Favorit Turboshift P985GPC with 15,835 hours on it, but looking very clean raised very good £56,000.

Changing makes to a stunning 1998 Case-IH 5150 Maxxum Pro R534 KNS with 990 hours was got away at £58,500. The 1996 Case-IH 7250 Magnum P273AUT, 4,982 hours was a gem at £41,500. Keeping with the dark red a same year Case-International 1455XL N278CKW with 4,679 hours made a massive record price at £61,500. Finishing off the Case-IH family was a mighty 2010 310 Magnum, on the clock was 5,127 hours which raised £44,000 at the close of play.

The very clean 1993 JCB 525-67 turbo telescopic loader L929XKH with 3,417 hours, sold for £23,500. Finishing things off was the 1999 New Holland TX66 combine T937NEG with 1,829 hours and 2,296 drum hours selling at £39,500 in superb condition.

FARMERS URGED TO SECURE FUNDING TO PROTECT AGAINST HEAT STRESS

Livestock housing solutions specialist, Galebreaker, is encouraging dairy farmers to apply for the Farm Equipment and Technology Fund (FETF) 2026 grants to invest in ventilation and monitoring systems to combat heat stress ahead of the 28 April deadline.

Galebreaker’s animal welfare expert, Chloe Rodriguez, said high performing dairy cows in the UK can begin to experience heat stress at just 18°C, particularly in humid conditions.

“Through the FETF, farmers have the opportunity to get funding for equipment to tackle heat stress and safeguard herd health and productivity,” she said.

“I’d strongly encourage farmers to look at the options available. For many, last summer was a wake-up call. Four heatwaves in one

season is not something dairy farmers can afford to ignore.”

“The impact of heat stress can be prolonged and costly – feed intakes drop, milk production suffers and fertility rates decline. From a welfare perspective, it also puts animals under significant strain with associated health issues such a mastitis and lameness.”

As climate patterns shift and heat stress becomes more prevalent, the FETF grants present a timely opportunity for farmers to enhance their livestock environments before temperatures and humidity rise.

“Farmers cannot control the weather, but they can control how well their buildings help cows cope with it. With the FETF funding now available, there’s no better time to invest in solutions that will make a real difference this summer,” added Miss Rodriguez.

FETF applications are open until 28 April 2026.

DRONE-APPLIED FROST PROTECTION

CropAid’s development programme now extends beyond formulation alone. For the current UK season, CropAid has teamed up with Ian Beecher Jones, owner of JoJo’s Vineyard and chairman of the WineGB Technology Group.

Ian has been testing various technologies at his vineyard in the Chiltern Hills near Henley-on-Thames, which he planted with his wife Tess in 2019. “Managing frost is challenging for everyone,” said Ian. “I saw the CropAid AntiFrost product at an industry event in November and thought it was an interesting way of protecting vines from frost. However, applying the product with a conventional sprayer, starting in March in a wet year, was going to cause soil compaction issues which would have consequences to the vines. So, I thought, why not look at another method of application using drones?”

Ian continued: “With the change in regulations which allowed drones to apply non-MAPP regulated products from the air in 2024, it seemed a sensible approach. We’ll be working with Steve Frost from SAS Agri Drones who has extensive experience with drone application. There are six of us in the trial in the Thames and Chilterns region. The main aim is to look at the benefits of the CropAid biostimulant on the vines for frost protection and then look at the opportunities for the rest of the season.”

Drone application offers several potential advantages:

• Ultra-rapid deployment ahead of overnight frost events

• Consistent canopy coverage, including difficult terrain and tight row spacing

• Reduced soil compaction compared with tractor sprayers

• Lower labour and fuel requirements

Massey Ferguson has agreed a partnership with buying cooperative Fram Farmers to provide members with exclusive discounts on a range of new MF tractors.

Based in Framlingham, Suffolk, Fram Farmers has been running for over 60 years and is the oldest farmers’ cooperative in the UK. It supports nearly 1600 farm businesses, across 39 counties, with input purchasing, grain marketing and administrative works.

PROFIT FROM REDUCED FARM WASTE

Vegetable producers can now generate new income streams while reducing waste disposal costs and environmental impacts by using an innovative processing machine.

Aimed at horticultural growers who package on-site, the revolutionary machine – which is already proven in other sectors - can sort the packaging from surplus fresh produce. This allows waste vegetables to be used as animal feed or for anaerobic digestion, while the plastic can be recycled.

“If a farmer has packaged up vegetables to go to the supermarket, and for whatever reason they’re rejected, they have a huge waste problem to deal with,” explained Matthew Rowan, director at Rowan Food and Biomass Engineering. “Farmers usually pay to outsource waste management, but they could be doing it themselves on site –removing this expense.”

The output from the machine can be used as feed or in anaerobic digesters – helping to create a circular system. “There could be an AD plant on-site, or at a local farm that needs feedstock – offering

another revenue stream from what would otherwise have been wasted,” he said.

The Dominator ER machine comes from Dominator Depackaging, by Rowan Food and Biomass Engineering, which specialises in waste depackaging across various industries like food, pharmaceuticals, retail and plastics. “We have supplied over 100 machines to different industries around the world throughout the supply chain,” noted Phil Rowan, director at Rowan Food and Biomass Engineering.

These are often big machines capable of handling 200 to 300 tonnes of waste a week. “We recognised that we could provide help earlier in the chain, and support farmers in waste management. So with that in mind, we are now offering a smaller machine for farms, which can handle 10 to 20 tonnes of waste per week.”

The machine is already being used to depackage grow bags in the horticulture sector. “Once the plant has been removed from the bag, farmers are left with a bag full of compost, which has to be thrown away,” said Phil. “But the machine removes the plastic from the compost, so the compost can be used elsewhere, and the plastic recycled.”

Another client – one of the UK’s largest pet food manufacturers – was disposing of 30 tonnes of pet food waste every week. It had previously managed waste off-site, however, due to disposal fees and transport costs, it wanted a long-term solution.

With the Dominator ER, all waste is now handled on-site, reducing disposal costs and emissions, and improving operational control, with a projected return on investment of under 12 months.

The mobile machine can be shared between sites or leased, said Matthew. “This really can be an answer to addressing food waste problems within farming, while providing a diversification opportunity and environmental benefits across the sector.”

More John Deere dealers have signed the Armed Forces Covenant in support of service leavers who can resettle into roles within the agriculture and turf industries.

At a ceremony held at the National Transition Event at Silverstone Circuit, Hunt Forest Group and Ripon Farm Services added their names to the covenant, which had already been adopted by Ben Burgess and Tallis Amos Group, as well as John Deere itself.

Signatories pledge to ensure that those who serve, or have served, in the armed forces, and their families, are treated fairly and should face no disadvantage compared to other citizens in the provision of public and commercial services.

The move complements John Deere’s Military Hiring Programme, which offers service leavers new career opportunities to work on some of the world’s most advanced machinery used by farmers and turf professionals.

Members of the armed forces have been identified as ideal candidates to bring their unique skill sets and experience to technician

roles within UK and Ireland dealerships.

PLENTY OF OPTIMISM

Its early March location in the calendar has always made the weather at Farm Expo unpredictable, with visitors needing multiple thermal layers one year and turning up in shirtsleeves the next.

This year, after a thoroughly wet start to the farming year, visitors were met by thick fog as they reached the Kent Showground at Detling, but while it made for a grey start for the big machinery dealers parked outside the John Hendry Pavilion and the Brachers Building, it failed to dampen the enthusiasm of those who attended another busy and successful show.

Farmers are renowned for their resilience, and the buzz around the stands this year suggested that there was still plenty of optimism in

the industry, perhaps boosted by the scaling back of the inheritance tax changes and the recent, reasonably positive, sustainable farming incentive announcement.

As always there was a good mix of stands, with advice on offer from the likes of the Rural Payments Agency and Kent Police’s Rural Task Force, numerous banks, solicitors, insurers, chartered surveyors and agronomists. They were joined by businesses selling everything from tyres to tractors and from solar energy to seeds.

The big boys were outside, where dealers including Bell Agricultural, Crawfords Group, Ernest Doe & Sons, Haynes Agricultural and Rhino Plant Hire turned heads with some of the latest and most impressive machinery on offer.

IDEAL TIME TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF GOVERNMENT GRANT

Even at full list price, the Rootwave F601 weed control system represents a sensible investment for fruit growers looking for an effective and environmentally responsible way of keeping vines free from unwanted plant life. Kirkland’s highly skilled service team has had extensive training on the Rootwave to ensure comprehensive back up to growers who invest in this clean, safe and sustainable way to keep orchards and vineyards free from weeds.

Newly appointed service manager Nick Ralph heads up a dedicated team of engineers, including apprentice Freddie Scott, and is focused on ensuring that they have regular training on the wide range of machinery that Kirkland UK sells and maintains.

The depot at Sutton Valence, just outside Maidstone, has a dedicated and recently revamped trade counter alongside a well-stocked showroom and well-equipped service area. Parts

manager Ben Short now keeps track of more than 4,000 parts and can guarantee next-day delivery on most of them, while even tractor parts that have to be sourced from Antonio Carraro in Italy generally only take a couple of days.

While the impressive Carraro range sadly doesn’t feature on the grant-supported FETF list, plenty of other useful equipment stocked by Kirkland UK does.

As well as the Rootwave and the impressive Orizzonti equipment, the list includes two models from the Burro range of fully autonomous robotic platforms, both aimed at doing the ‘donkey work’ (burro is Spanish for donkey) in vineyards, nurseries, greenhouses and the like.

A £12,000 grant is available towards both the Burro Verde, described as a “purpose-built solution for autonomous transport” and ideal for moving containers of fruit, and the Burro Grande, a heavier duty model which can tow 2.3 tonnes and has a payload of 450kg.

The Burro Grande is more than capable of towing a mower, allowing for that particular task to be done autonomously, and the team at Kirkland UK is looking closely at other attachments that will allow the multi-purpose platform to carry out a wide range of other roles.

Built to be practical, durable and easy to use, both models have been attracting a lot of interest amongst Kirkland UK’s customers,

“particularly those that are concerned about the cost of labour –and that’s all of them,” commented Scott.

Given its potential to save money in the long-term, the FETF grant of £12,000 towards either the Verde at £29,000 or even the larger Grande at £40,000 is likely to look tempting, but those interested will need to move quickly. The grants became available on 17 March, with the window closing on 28 April.
