NO FUMES OR FUSS IS A BATTERY TOOL PLUS

Lithium-ion battery powered 230mm/9in disc cutters from Husqvarna and STIHL are built to absorb the rigours of a construction site and the units we tried back in 2020 were both extremely well made. Able to cut to a depth of around 70mm, these tools have a host of advantages over a petrol powered ‘chop saw’ and proved really easy to use safely and accurately. STIHL still offer a TSA 230, although it has developments over the unit test here. Similarly, Husqvarna now offering the K 540i, this having the capacity to take a blade diameter of up to 267mm /10in. STIHL also offer alternatives to include its AP battery system TSA 300. This will take a 300mm / 12 in blade. Battery tool development is not standing still.

There is no denying the versatility of a cut-off saw. Fitted with the right type of disc, these tools can be used to slice through concrete, stone, roofing materials, plastic pipe, steel, roofing sheet - and more- to suit all manner of jobs around the farm. Five years ago, we put a pair of battery powered models to the test and, although both units have since been either upgraded or superseded, what applied then will still apply today.

A cut-off saw disc cutter is typically associated with a two-stroke power unit that is noisy, pretty heavy and not much fun to operate. Is a battery powered alternative easier and more pleasant to work with?

The Husqvarna K 535i and STIHL TSA 230 ‘battery’ powered cutters we looked at were relatively new models back in 2020 and neither were designed to tackle the same heavy work of a ‘typical’ 12in/300mm or 14in/350mm disc size petrol powered machine. As it was, these 9inch/230mm disc tools proved easily powerful enough for the farm building work we tackled, any compromise relating to the size of the disc as opposed to relying upon battery power.

Jobs carried out ranged from slicing through a large steel joist, trimming roof tiles and slate, cutting concrete blocks and running a channel through concrete and block to bury a cable. We do not claim to be ‘construction’ equipment specialists, tools like these getting used occasionally on farm, but our aim was to get an impression of what these disc cutters are like to use in a variety of tasks.

The specifications of each of the two cutters is listed in the table. We chose to use models from Husqvarna and STIHL as these two companies offer a range of compatible chainsaws, hedge trimmers, brushcutters, garden lawnmowers etc that can run from the same professional battery systems. Other battery disc cutters to consider will include models offered by cordless power tool makers to include DeWalt and Milwaukee.

WHAT ARE THEY LIKE TO USE?

When run up, both these cutters are a lot quieter than a petrol-powered tool, but this is not the same as suggesting you can use them without ear defenders. As soon as the cutting discs are set to work, they ‘sing’ just as loudly as if driven by a petrol engine. Any cutting tool will make a racket, no matter what the power source. That said, these two were a whole lot less noisy than the farm’s old petrol chop saw we brought along by way of comparison.

A 9in/230mm disc will not cut the end from a small concrete building block in a single pass but the STIHL TSA 230 proved so easy to use, and fast, that flipping the block over to complete the job was not a problem. STIHL provided us with a 10 litre capacity pressurised water container to work with the disc cutter and this proved really useful. Rather than have to run a hose to the tool, we were able to use the tank to feed water to it easily. At £100 it is not a cheap accessory, but it proved to be an extremely useful one.

Move over grandad. Given the choice of using a petrol or battery powered disc cutter, we know we would choose the latter every time. That said, a 9in/230mm disc will clearly not cut as deeply as the larger 12in/300mm or 14in/350mm disc offered on a petrol cut off saw. When cutting lighter material, such as roofing slates, the Husqvarna K 535i proved really effective. Our old petrol disc cutter just sat and watched.

WHAT’S TESTED

A hose quick coupler links to the water feed. The pipework is well protected, the quick connector auto-shut off making it easy to remove and couple under pressure. In work, these tools can get through a fair amount of water.

A steel ‘rocking plate’ enables the tool to be held down and tilted into work. Note the hardened steel guard at the base of the disc shield. Key maintenance demand is to clean the tool after use and ensure the vents are kept clear.

As soon as the STIHL battery is locked into place, the TSA 230 is ready to go. A switch allows the tool to be ‘turned off’ with the battery in place, but this has to be done manually.

STIHL AP 300 and AP 300S are the recommended batteries for the TSA 230, the professional batteries sharing the same form factor that can be used in a range of other tools to include the STIHL Cordless KombiEngine. The latter can power a brush cutter, hedge trimmer and other established STIHL Kombi tools. The battery number indicates its capacity, with respective outputs of 227 and 281 Wh. The AP 300 battery supplied with an AL 300 charger took around 60 minutes to fully charge the battery from flat.

Although the water is fed to just one side of the disc, in work we found it rapidly spread to drench the work area for effective dust control and cooling. The disc lock button, which is pressed home to the secure the drive when swapping discs, is effective in allowing the securing bolt to be removed. We suggest the battery is taken out when swapping or removing the disc.

WHAT’S TESTED

A touchpad on the top of the Husqvarna K 535i has to be pressed to switch the cutter ‘on’, the system shutting down if the tool is left standing for a while between use. A useful safety feature. The green ‘e’ button activates SavETM. Aimed at preserving battery life by monitoring power according to the work being done, we used it when cutting roof tiles but found it was better left off when cutting concrete blocks.

Water is fed to both sides of the disc on the K 535i. Swapping between a masonry steel and abrasive cutting discs is easy, and again we suggest the battery is removed before doing the job. Although quiet compared to a petrol cut-off saw, you still need to wear ear defenders (and eye protection too).

Another key plus of battery power is the elimination of noxious engine fumes. Running up an engine in a confined space is a real hazard. No such problem with battery power. Just make sure you wear the appropriate PPE and you can use these tools inside or out.

We expected it to take a while to get familiar with these cutters but in practice they both

The ‘rocking plate’ on the K 535i incorporates rubber feet, these protecting the underside of the tool when placing it on a hard surface. Both this model and the STIHL use a brushless electric motor, with instant power and torque. A belt is used to transfer drive to the disc, with an auto tension system on the STIHL and an easily accessed drive on the K 535i.

proved equally easy to operate. A key plus linked to their compact size was low weight, both tipping the scales at just over 6kg charged and ready to go. A petrol 12in chop saw will pretty much double that mass when filled with fuel. No surprise that even with a water feed hose attached, moving either of these two between jobs was easier than lugging a petrolpowered machine around.

A tap adjacent to the loop handle can be used, like on the STIHL, to turn on the water flow to the cutting disc. Prior to using these tools, we gave them a polish. This may sound like a pointless exercise, but it made cleaning them off after use much easier. Disc cutters go from new to filthy extremely quickly.

Cutting performance on lighter materials, such as a roofing slate, was fast and had the added advantage of really suiting the on/off nature of battery power. Firing up a petrol tool to cut a single tile is a real faff, but these two were ready to go instantly. Cutting concrete blocks was a lot faster than expected too, despite the need to flip the block over to cut from both sides. That

is a disc size compromise but one we would happily put up with due to the battery powered tools proving so easy to use. The more we worked these cutters, the better we liked them.

SUMMARY

If you have a building project lined up and are thinking of investing in a cut-off saw, consider a battery powered model. Although the two cutters we tried at the time would not match the cutting depths offered by a 12in/300mm or larger 14in/350mm petrol powered

disc cutter, they both proved extremely capable and can still tackle a wide range of tasks with absolutely no compromise in terms of raw power. When fitted with a composite cutting disc, we sliced a steel joist with ease. Apart from wearing the disc itself down rather faster than anticipated, a job we dreaded was completed quickly and accurately. Portable and easy to use, we think a battery powered disc cutter would be worked more on farm than a petrol powered alternative. Any tool that makes a job easier is bound to be used more regularly and will soon pay for itself.

A single 36v Lithium ion BLi300 professional battery delivering 9.4Ah of power comes as standard with the K 535i, alternative ‘100’ series professional batteries offering capacities of 2.6 and 5.2Ah. Re-charge times vary according to the batteries capacity, the BLi 300 taking around 30 minutes to get back to around 80% capacity and nearer 50 to a full charge using the supplied QC500 charger. A single charge was enough to keep the cutter spinning long enough to slice numerous concrete blocks, several roof tiles and various lengths of plastic drainage pipe. We found we ran out of work before the battery needed charging, but still suggest you invest in two batteries if you go for one of these tools. Pushed through the frame of the tool, the battery BLi300 is exposed at both ends. This is to facilitate its active cooling, all batteries warming as they are put to work.

WHY BURN TIMBER YOU CAN TURN INTO PLANKS?

Recent winter storms brought down several trees around the farm, this section of ash being far too good to turn into firewood. Using a generic Vevor Alaskan mill purchased ‘online’ for under £80 including VAT and delivery, we were able to turn a nominal 80cm diameter trunk into planks. Good value? Well yes, but we also needed a long guide bar and ripping chain, these adding a VAT inclusive £265 to the bill.

The fate of most fallen timber is to be cut up for firewood, even when a straight section of trunk just begs to be spared and used to make something. Here we outline how we saved some from the wood burner.

A few caveats from the outset. If you want to use a chainsaw to ‘mill’ fallen timber, you need several things. First, a chainsaw that is not just powerful enough to drive a long guide bar with a ripping chain but with the stamina to cope with the tough job of slicing through the timber you want to mill.

We borrowed a STIHL MS500i for our job and although it absolutely ‘bossed’ the 42in guide bar through our ash trunk, an even more powerful saw is recommended to mill with such a long guide bar.

NOTE: STIHL recommend the maximum guide bar length for an MS 500i is 36in.

Next you need to be patient. It takes time to set up a milling system, the generic Alaskan mill ‘frame’ we used taking a while to both assemble and adjust to suit our saw and bar combo. We had an added problem with the massive 42in/107cm GB Lo Pro guide bar we bought as part of a milling kit from Hampshire based Chainsawbars Ltd. Its grooves were painted on the inside. This meant the drive links of the Panther ripping chain that came as part of the package were too tight to fit into the bar. We had to clean out all the paint before we could even fit the chain.

Not a great start as this tedious fettling job took a couple of hours. Once cleaned up, the bar and chains supplied did at least work together nicely but having to spend so much time getting the bar ready was a pain. At least we knew from the outset that a long bar and chain would bring its challenges.

We ordered an auxiliary oiler bolt from the same supplier to lube the sprocket end of the bar as we knew expecting the saw’s own oiler to cope was unreasonable. We initially rigged up a simple bottle feed to the bolt under gravity but the chain oil did not flow freely. We improvised, using a tube and oil can to manually pump oil into the bolt as we milled. This system worked well, the chain and guide bar getting enough oil to run clean and cool.

Taking a step back to setting up, the Alaskan mill frame we bought was fairly decently made, holding the saw and bar in place without the 13mm bolts that clamped everything together working loose.

WHAT’S TESTED

For our first ‘set up’ run, we ran the mill over an aluminium ladder rested on the top of the trunk. We had looked at set-up videos to get a clue on how to do the first cut but we just used a ladder free of damage and old paint. Once you have done the initial pass using a ladder as a guide, the frame runs directly on the trunk. Between passes, we blew the cut surface clear of sawdust to leave a smooth face to run on. Note we had a clear space around the trunk. If there are things to trip you up or make it hard to work the mill at a consistent speed you could run into problems. NOTE: We subsequently tried a different approach, running the mill over the ladder for each pass. This worked really well as the ‘mill’ is supported as a cut is completed.

We made frequent stops to check the chain as it bedded in. We also added a lot of extra oil at the bar’s sprocket end, this helping to keep everything running sweetly. We used the two wedges supplied with the mill kit to maintain a saw gap as we worked, with an extra set of wood wedges adding a bit more lift as we progressed. Without wedges, the bar will jam. The MS500i ‘power head’ drove the 42in bar without complaint and used just under 2 litres mixed two-stroke fuel.

WHAT’S TESTED

Our milling frame has a simple inch depth scale to set the thickness of the milled timber. More expensive mills include those with a simple geared adjuster that sets the working depth quickly. This would be easier than undoing the 13mm nuts at each end of our lowcost unit, but professional mill systems cost a lot more than the £80 we spent.

We added an auxiliary oiler bolt to our chain and bar order, this fitting into pre-drilled holes at the sprocket end of the guide bar. Expecting a saw designed for a bar of up to 36in/92cm to keep a 42in/107cm bar oiled is asking too much. Note the bolt oil feed hole needs to be positioned so it faces the chain. We needed to add flat and lock washers to mount bolt so the outlet fed into the bar groove. The oiling bolt cost around £10.

Rip saw chain used for milling is typically sharpened at 10°, crosscut chain normally having a 30° or 35° cutter. Ripping chain is not necessarily a special chain, a crosscut semi-chisel chain sharpened at a shallow angle doing a similar job. The two narrow kerf 3/8in Panther Lo Pro chains supplied with our guide bar kit are purpose made for milling. We sharpened them with a 4mm round file at the reduced angle, resting the chain in a smaller bar as it was easier to manage. We worried our touch up skills would not be up to the job but had no problems. We left the depth gauges alone first time around, but these may need to be filed down at the next sharpening.

That said, the steel box was not that tough, proving easy to bend if the nuts securing the bar clamp were over tightened, and the quality of fasteners was poor. It also took a few goes to get the depth setting right. This is adjusted by sliding the mounts up and down on the square section tube marked with a scale in inches. Choose the working depth and this will set the thickness of plank you are after, but lining up accurately to the scale was tricky. More expensive mills will make setting working thicknesses a lot easier, and they should be stronger. A cheap mill will be fine for occasional use but you will want something better if you want to do anything other than the odd milling job.

RUN IN THE BAR AND CHAIN

Before even thinking about working, we had soaked both the Panther ripping chains supplied with the kit in oil, the guide bar, following the removal of all the channel

blocking paint, getting a lube and wax before it was fitted. We do this to all our chainsaw bars as it helps oil up the chain and guide bar, with the wax on the flat surface helping to keep the bar cleaner in work and less liable to bind.

We ran the chain up to speed in the mill for several minutes before putting it to work. Getting the chain tension right for milling clearly takes more experience than we have as it took several attempts to get to the distinct sweet spot between too tight and too slack. It took numerous tweaks to get the tension right.

Once in work, we checked the chain repeatedly, finding that once the chain had loosened up and ‘bedded in’ it did not need repeated tensioning between plank runs but as the guide bar channels needed a clean every couple of runs we had to go through the tensioning set up often. We expected to have trouble in work as the

chain is so long, but we soon had the mill travelling nicely through the trunk. That said we were careful, stopping perhaps more often than necessary to check the chain. It is important to knock in wedges to maintain the gap between the sawn plank and trunk as the cut progresses, even when producing a slim plank.

A point to note is that even if the chain seemed slack after a run it tightened up noticeably as it cooled. No advice here. If you use a ripping chain and a saw for milling you cannot use cross-cut chainsaw experience as a guide to how to tighten the chain. Best to check as you go.

SUMMARY

The 42in bar, with two-chains and a drive sprocket, cost us just over £265 delivered. Ex.VAT, that is around £216. Now add the cost of the 35cm to 120cm working width Alaskan mill at around £66 ex.VAT and we were in for under £300 for a chainsaw mill. Sounds reasonable and we produced some decent ash planks that would cost more than that if offered for sale. The trouble is this sum does not include the cost of a chainsaw. We were loaned the STIHL MS500i for our job, but even this 5kW/6.8hp saw is not the recommended choice to drive a 42in/107cm long guide bar, a big felling saw typically being the type most would suggest is a better alternative. We found the MS500i to be just fine but we did not exploit the full width of the bar.

If you have a nominal 60cc ‘farm saw’, it will deliver far less power than an MS500i. You could consider a milling set up at under half the size we used and use a standard bar and semi-chisel chain* sharpened to 10° to save some money. This could be fine for timber of up to around 30cm in diameter. The problem is that when you measure much of the stuff that has been blown over you may find this falls short of what you need. As to our planks, we were pleased with the results and happy to have saved some fine ash from the fire.

*A full chisel chain is not recommended for ripping as it can produce a poor quality of cut

WHAT’S TESTED

We cut our first set of planks at 2.5in thick, a subsequent set from the same trunk being cut to less than half that. Battens between the sawn planks will help even out the drying, those in the know using ratchet straps to clamp sawn timber tightly together to help reduce warping. We will paint the plank ends as this is said to help even out drying.

A drive sprocket was supplied with the bar and chain kit, although it looked to be the same size as the one already fitted to STIHL MS500i we used. We deliberately fitted it ‘hole side’ out. By nipping off the clutch cover, it was easy to check if the holes were filled with sawdust. If they were full ,we knew the guide bar channel needed a clean out. The sawdust produced was fine and the bar did block after a couple of runs. We rested the saw after each pass and checked the clutch for overheating.

We rigged up a simple transparent hose and slid it over the solid pipe of an oil can to manually pump in bar oil. We tried a gravity feed system but this blocked as debris filled the oiling aperture. Forcing oil through as the chain was running did mean milling was a two-person job, but looking after the chain and bar is a key to getting good results. The bar end guard and mill frame meant there was little risk of coming into contact with the chain but we took great care. Note the lovely ash grain.

COUNTY’S MAKE IT BIG

The most expensive ex-Prestwick Airport Ford County 1184TW was this 1982 example that was showing 2,181hours on the clock. It sold for £30,000

At the same Euro Auctions sale were a series of original clean County’s which made our correspondent’s phone red hot. The only drawback was their fluid transmission systems which make them rather less appealing, but they still went on to sell very well.

These machines had relative low hours for their age and had been well looked after, they had been based at Glasgow Airport, and were part of a substantial order placed by the British Airports Authority (BAA), which at the time operated Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Aberdeen and Glasgow airports. They had all been well maintained and used on snow clearance and equipment/aircraft recovery.

In very good condition, was this ex-Prestwick 1979 Ford County 1174. It only had 957 hours behind it, and sold for £29,500

Coming out on top was a 1982 1184TW showing 2,181 hours on the clock, grade 10 which sold for £30,000, while an 1174 from 1979 with only 957 hours behind it went onto make £29,500. It was then followed by a 1980 County 1184TW that was reported to have a transmission fault – sold for £27,000.

As for the other 1174s to go under the hammer, both dated from 1979. The first had 1,956 hours behind and raised £28,000, while another example with 1,255 hours on the clock went for £26,000 despite having a DVLA scrapped marker on it. These tractors certainly got a lot of attention at the auction, and with the rest of the tractors on offer, made this an interesting and varied sale.

BRILLANT EURO PLOUGHING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Over the sunshine packed weekend of 1-2 March the European Ploughing Championships took place at the excellent Joseph Camm Farms, Upper Morton, Retford, Nottinghamshire, premises right by the A1.

It looked as though 2012 Reversible European Ploughing Champion John Whelan (New Holland T5040) was on to win again, after being placed first on Saturday evening. However his fellow competitor from The Republic of Ireland Dan Donnelly had other ideas. Dan is the man of the moment and turned things around with his John Deere outfit on the Sunday and beat the former champion who always goes well on the UK mainland by 2 points to take the title, yes it was that close!

Third went to Scotland’s James Tait with his Case-IH 985XL with Kverneland plough, which all competitors in this championship were using. Northern Ireland’s Adrian Jamison with his immaculate John Deere 6110 ended up in fifth overall placed on 360.5 points. England’s Mike Chappell with a McCormick CX105 took seventh place. New boy Will Tupper from West Sussex also representing England finished 12th out of 21 on his first attempt with his JD 6200 featuring black wheels.

England’s John Crowder retained his title in the vintage trailer class with his Fordson N Diesel Special on 387 points over the two days. In the Vintage Mounted Richard Ingham was the man of the vintage championships with the highest score of the weekend on 405.5.

As for the Classic class Jon Cole didn’t have a good start on the Sunday, but came through with 206.5 points using his Nuffield 10/42. Vintage Reversible saw four competitors it was England v The Netherlands with the later taking it 2-0. First was Deutz tractor technician Marius Jenniskens with the so original 1958 Deutz D30S with 1958 Rumptstad hydraulic lift plough on 346.4.

All in all the Society of Ploughman who hosted the match with the EPA and EPF can hold their head up high. This was an excellent event supported by various clubs with a good crowd.

JOHN DEERES ‘HOT’ AT CAMBRIDGE

Cheffins held its third Cambridge Machinery Sale on Monday 10 March and saw approximately 280 tractors and related machinery during the drive through section of the sale which started at 9am. There was lots of fresh new stock filling the yard up nicely, which saw over half move on to new owners by the end of the sale. However there is still a general shortage of good quality stock around.

After the export and restoration Massey Fergusons went through with a 1987 40E industrial with a drive fault selling for a good £6,000 and a rough 575 and 265 selling for £3,000 and £3,900 respectively we moved to a 390T two-wheel drive at £9,500. A 1993 Same Explorer 90 with 40k transmission, but needing work on the brakes was yours for £10,000.

Moving to Case-IH tractors the 1990 956XL turbo with front fenders was yours for £12,500 grade 9.6 and the 1995 4240XL, grade 9.7 £9,500. The Case-IH Quadtrac 620 got to £70,000, but was not enough to see it change hands. The high specification 2019 Case-IH Puma 165 went on to sell for £49,500 grade 10 before we moved to a 2008 Case Magnum 280 with a differential fault and the drive

disconnected selling for £20,000.

The 2014 Case Puma 230 with 2018 Quicke loader went on to sell for £38,500 grade 10. Showing great style a 2017 Valtra T154 powershift grade 10 was yours at £35,000 and a 2005 T130 with front suspension £13,500. A number of clean Renault tractors were offered and the 1999 330 Ceres is a model people still rate, this example sold for just £5,200.

Then came a 2012 Claas Xerion 3800 Saddletrac with 9,999 hours. The ‘elephant’ like sludge tanker grade 10 got to £30,000 with just a little more needed to see it sold. However a 2007 Claas Ares did move on at £14,500 and a 2009 Axion 820 grade 10 was sold for £21,800. The reliable McCormick MTX150 grade 10 was the best of the make at £14,000.

New Holland’s were much in demand with a 2009 T6030 direct from the farm raising £29,500 and a similar aged T6090 again direct from a farm with more hours changing hands at £29,000. A T6.175 grade 10 like the previous New Hollands £32,500. The 1997 TM190 £13,000 in good order and the 1994 8340 four-wheel drive grade 10 sold for £14,800. However the big surprises were the 2006 TM155 at £18,500, a TL 100A grade 10 £14,000 and £33,800 for a 2018 T7.200 grade 10.

Onto Massey Fergusons with the 2013 5445 selling for £24,500 grade 10 the 5465 £18,500. An underrated tractor is the Kioti range and a 7330RX, raised £21,800 and was moved on, the compact CK3510 sold for £6,500.

John Deere was just hot when the 1984 2040S got things going at £6,500 it was followed by a 2009 6130 at £31,0000 grade 10, just a year earlier the 6630 grade 10 saw a good £56,000 paid for it. Other good prices included the 2016 7290 selling for £46,000 and £88,000 for a 2023 6R215 grade 11 the biggest number on the day. Prices dropped down to £24,500 for a 2007 6930, £34,500 2018 6135M and £55,000 for a 2021 6145R.

There were a number of Fendt’s here with the 828 getting away at £54,000, the 1998 615LS £6,500 and a 2019 Fendt 720 Prof £45,000. More MFs were then back on with the 2015 5612 raising £29,500 and 7622 £27,000 grade 10. Just two, JCB Fastrac’s were offered with the 3200 Smoothshift selling for £25,500. Lastly the MF 34 combine in running order looks good and was yours at £5,200 there was however uncertainty about the header. Certainly the best Cheffins Cambridge Machinery Sale of the year so far.

JOHN DEERES DOMINATE

The latest Euro Auctions near Leeds on Wednesday 5 March saw approximately 70 tractors go under the hammer. As ever, the condition and age of the tractors on offer varied considerably, but in true Euro Auctions tradition, everything sold. The sale was dominated by a superb range of John Deere tractors, with many models being represented, and it was here that the most expensive tractors could be found.

There were no crawler tractors on offer, so it was straight onto a selection of John Deere’s with around 30 examples to choose from. The first to take to the selling ramp was a very tidy 6250R Ultimate edition that dated from 2018. With 7,537 hours on the clock, grade 10 it sold for £53,000. Then came a 2017 JD 6215R Premium Edition that had 7,066 hours behind it, grade 10 in excellent condition, it went on to make £38,000, but that price was eclipsed by a couple of 6195Rs.

The first one dated from 2019 with the clock showing 5,253 hours it raised £52,000, while doing even better was a 6195R Premium Edition with 6,813 hours behind it, which dated from 2021 grade 11. It was in great condition and sold for £60,000, but that wasn’t the top price achieved in the sale. That honour was reserved for a 2021

John Deere 6175R Premium Edition that had 2,637 hours on the clock, which saw some competitive bidding take its selling price to £64,000 grade 11.

To be fair, a series of other tractors were not far behind, with a 2021 JD 6155M with 3,570 hours behind, £61,000, a price that was equalled by a 6140M from 2020 that was fitted with a JD623M front loader both grade 10. There were numerous other John Deere’s going under the hammer too, for example, two 6155Ms that dated from 2021 making £53,000 and £58,000 each, both grade 10.

But there were other manufacturers represented in the sale too. Among a small selection of New Holland tractors on offer was a T7.210 from 2020 grade 11 with 4,791 hours sold for £51,000, while a series of Claas Arion 610s that dated from 2020 were also on offer grade 10. The most expensive had 2,621 hours on the clock and sold for £44,000 with the rest not that far behind.

Moving on a tidy 2018 Deutz-Fahr Agrotron 6165 RC Shift that was showing 5,118 hours on the clock did well when it sold for £39,000 grade 11, while also on offer was a somewhat cheaper 2014 Fendt 716 that was fitted with Q56 front loader grade 9.8. In workmanlike condition, but well used it sold for £29,000 despite having 15,392 hours on the clock.

J Riley Beet Harvesters, UK importer of Vervaet, is introducing an updated version of the popular Vervaet Q-616 sugar beet harvester for the 2025/26 harvesting campaign. This latest Q-616 features a new cab, a range of technical improvements, updated styling and numerous new options. This facelift continues the progression of the Q-Series harvester design in line with Vervaet’s policy of ongoing development.

SIX STEPS TOWARDS CORRECT SPRAYER SETUP

A well-maintained sprayer, correctly set up, is essential for accurate application and optimal efficacy, while avoiding any risks to the operator, bystanders and the environment.

Ahead of the busy spring spraying season kicking off, Hutchinsons agronomist George Baxter, highlights six ways to make sure your sprayer is properly prepared.

1. DO A VISUAL INSPECTION

Start by getting the sprayer out of the shed, and walk around it to check all the components individually for cleanliness and condition. The whole machine has to be fit for purpose, so look at everything from the hitching and steering points on a trailed or mounted sprayer, to the tank, filters, hoses, and electrics. Perishable rubber components, such as Drip Control Valves, and water ingress into electrical solenoid valves can be particular problems areas to watch. Also check pto guards, beacons, work lights and tyres are in good condition and free from defects. Open out the boom and check the general condition of joints, hydraulic rams, pivots, etc, and boom

movement, which should move and reset itself to the centre.

Sprayers must be tested annually for farm assurance, so check that your sprayer has a valid, in-date NSTS certificate, and book a test where appropriate.

2. CHECK TYRE PRESSURES

Sprayer setup is not just about the spraying components. Other factors, such as running the correct tyre pressures can also help improve boom stability in the field and minimise potential compaction of tramlines.

Although many sprayers have self-levelling systems, these can be put under greater strain if tyre pressures are uneven. Don’t forget to also check the tractor tyre pressures if you are using a mounted sprayer. The optimum pressure depends on several factors, such as tyre type and size, machine weight, and the amount of field and roadwork to be done, so a compromise may be needed. Refer to tyre manufacturer recommendations or speak to a representative about optimum pressures.

WHAT’S NEW

3. ENSURE THE TANK IS EMPTY AND CLEAN

Ideally, the sprayer will have been put away clean at the end of the season, but there is no harm in washing it out again with clean water before starting the spring programme. Doing so also provides an opportunity to check for leaks at the same time.

Although water will do the job, some product labels require a specific tank cleaner to be used, and even if not, cleaners can be worth using occasionally to ensure everything is given a good clean, particularly if you are concerned about potential sulfonylurea residues on sensitive crops.

Remember, all washings must be disposed of correctly, which can be quite complex in the absence of a designated washdown area and biobed system, so seek advice or speak to your agronomist if you are in any doubt.

4. LOOK FOR LEAKS

It is always worth operating the sprayer with clean water to check for leaks and ensure the on-off mechanism and anti-drip valves are working correctly.

Running the sprayer at a minimum of five bar to check for leaks is recommended. If there are no leaks, pressurise the sprayer to operating pressure to check that the pressure reading (gauge or electronic) is operational and correct.

5. TEST THE NOZZLES

It is important to inspect and jug test the nozzles for damage and ensure that they are within tolerance for desired application rates. Cross reference the flow rate against manufacturers data, and also check that nozzles are correctly aligned. Take this opportunity to evaluate whether current nozzles are delivering the coverage you need to get the most from products. Recent years have seen an industry trend towards lower water volumes to improve work rates, but there is a risk this could be compromising coverage and efficacy in some situations. Again, it’s a complex area, so discuss the options for nozzle choice and water volume with your agronomist.

6. CHECK PPE AND FIRST AID

Finally, make sure that the correct PPE and a complete first aid kit (including eyewash) is available to the sprayer operator. At the very least, PPE should include a face mask, gloves, and spraying overalls. Also consider things like a spill kit, fire extinguisher, signage, and an action plan/emergency contact numbers in the event of an accident. “Taking a bit of time to make sure everything is in good working order before the season gets going can help to reduce the risks of downtime once things get busy. With relatively narrow windows to apply products at the optimum stage, anything we can do to avoid lost time and keep sprayers working properly has to be worthwhile,” George Baxter concluded.

FARM EXPO 2025 REVIEW

OUTSTANDING SHOW WITH OPTIMISTIC MOOD

Farmers faced a dilemma when Wednesday 5 March dawned sunny and comparatively warm after weeks of predominantly wet and miserable weather.

While the annual Farm Expo event at the Kent Showground at Detling, now in its sixth year, was offering its usual outstanding showcase of everything the agricultural industry could possibly need, the temptation to get out on the land was no doubt too much for some.

For those who made the trip to the showground, there was plenty to see, with the usual broad range of exhibitors displaying their wares, everything from insurance to solar PV opportunities and from mobile sheep dipping services to combine harvester tyres.

It was once again an outstanding show, combining the opportunity to check out the latest machinery supplies and

services with a chance to chat with friends, neighbours, suppliers, customers and fellow professionals.

It may have been the weather, which has in past years seen visitors forced to puddle jump over the mud while wearing umpteen layers of warm clothing but this year allowed some to relax in shirtsleeves – the mood was optimistic, despite the current pressures on farming and farmers.

At the Crawfords Group stand, one of those sited in the external display area, Charing branch sales manager Adrian Denny was one of many enjoying both the sunshine and a steady stream of visitors.

“It’s another good show and it’s been a good chance to network and chat to existing customers and potential new ones,” he said. “It’s been interesting to see that the customers I have spoken to have all been positive.

sponsored by South East Farmer, featured a number of high-end tractors, including Massey Ferguson’s 425hp 9S, the Valtra S416 and the Fendt 600 Vario series, a four-cylinder range that tops out at 220hp.

“I think footfall may have been down a bit because of the weather, with some farmers out doing spring cultivations, but it’s still been a busy show and we’ve had lots of interest,” said Adrian.

Also on the Crawfords stand was machinery from the likes of Manitou, Amazone, Lemken, Heva, Isuzu, Can-Am and Indespension trailers, a new franchise offered by the dealership.

Steve Pack, from Steve Pack Agricultural Services, also said he had enjoyed “a busy morning” dealing with a steady stream of enquiries and catching up with existing customers. “This is always a good show and is held at just the right time of year,” he commented.

Steve was highlighting a range of liming and fertiliser products, including Envirocal, a quick acting and highly reactive lime alternative containing many trace elements which is cheaper than standard lime because it is a by-product of sugar refining.

Also outside following a successful show ‘debut’ inside the exhibition hall last year was Kent Towing Solutions, which had invested in twice as much space this year after finding Farm Expo 2024 an ideal way to showcase the company's wide range of trailers across brands including Erdé, Indespension, Tentbox, Nugent and Tickners.

“Last year showed us the benefit of getting our name out there, meeting potential customers and showcasing our products,” said sales manager Tyler Cox. “We’ve been equally pleased with how well the show has gone for us this year.”

Having been coming to the show for the past four years, Lister Wilder’s Ashford, Kent-

based agricultural sales manager Jay Broster shared the upbeat view of Farm Expo’s ability to showcase products as well as offering a chance to relax, chat and network. He also liked the new layout, which put the external stands in a more accessible location.

“I’ve seen lots of existing and potential new customers,” commented Jay, who said the Kubota tractors on the Lister Wilder stand were increasingly being seen as a good value alternative to some of the bigger brand names on the market.

Inside, VIP guest Olly Harrison, a video blogger when he isn’t looking after his 1,500acre cereal farm on the outskirts of Liverpool, paid tribute to Farm Expo and said he hadn’t appreciated the scale of the event.

Tom Wilson, associate director with the BTF Partnership, interviewed towards the end of the afternoon, summed up the positive nature of the busy, one-day event. “It’s a great way to bring people together in uncertain times,” he said. “I’ve been here since 8.30am and I’ve only spent three minutes away from the stand.”

Poultry producers are being urged to download the free Livestock Protect App to track the rapid spread of Avian Influenza (AI) and strengthen on-farm biosecurity as cases continue to rise across the UK.

The app provides real-time alerts on local disease risks and practical biosecurity guidance, helping farmers respond quickly to outbreaks. With Avian Influenza Prevention Zones (AIPZ) now covering the entire UK, staying informed has never been more critical.

Neal Samet, Livetec general manager and director, explained the Livestock Protect App equips poultry keepers with the knowledge required to comply with Government regulations and take swift action to safeguard flocks.

“The app has been developed to send real-

WHAT’S NEW PERFECT FOR TERMINATING COVER CROPS

The use of sprays in the vineyard is a tried-and-tested means of weed control, one that has come under more scrutiny by environmental bodies as the years go on – meaning a reduction in approved products, and a drive by vineyard owners and consultants to adopt a more mechanical approach.

A major drawback of a purely mechanical method of weed control is that timing is key; too early in the season and the ground is too wet, too late, and the weeds are too advanced impacting airflow and humidity undervine. This results in increased passes over each row throughout the season to tackle the weeds at the right moment, with the excessive soil compaction and increased fuel use that accompany such an exercise.

A machine that can slot in nicely to a predominantly mechanical philosophy is a herbicide sprayer– used early in the season, these machines can kill off unwanted growth before weeds properly take off without churning up wet soil.

Landquip are a British company who have specialised for some forty years in the production of agricultural spraying equipment and have more recently turned

attention to viticulture as a focus point. The company applies their extensive knowledge and high-quality components from intensive arable machinery to a range of vineyard sprayers, notably the two row Herbi sprayer.

This machine comprises a 600l tank, mounted on the rear of the tractor – its shape enables it to be used on the steepest of slopes and still drain freely meaning no leftover spray at the end of the day. The tank and 20l Black Hole induction hopper are constructed of ultra-smooth polyethylene to aid easy cleaning, and include can rinse, tank rinse, handwash and agitation jets as standard.

Spray booms are side mounted on the powder-coated frame encompassing the tank, and will cover two complete rows. Each outer boom has a sprung breakback system should an obstacle be encountered, and they fold completely back for a 1.6m wide transport width, with a simple lock system for both transport and work positions. LED road lights provide extra safety when moving between sites on the road.

three centre nozzles can be individually opened should an operator want to spray the middle of the row – perfect for terminating cover crops should tillage or mowing prove ineffective.

An electric control unit provides three section on/off and pressure adjustment, with Bravo control with adjustable rate, volume and pressure readouts available as an option. All pump and valve units are taken from the same suppliers as the arable machinery offered by Landquip, so are of the highest quality and are well-proven in their application.

UV BOOSTING TECHNOLOGY AT THE FOREFRONT OF SUSTAINABILITY

Veenow Vineyard is proud to announce that after extensive research and assistance it will be the first operator and sales agent of the UV Boosting technology to be at the forefront of sustainability in UK vineyards.

After a year of research into the usage of UV-C and the different application methods, Robert and Katie came across UV Boosting based in France and made contact with Emanuele who was very helpful in explaining independent research and historic data from trials covering over seven years. After testimonials from other operators around the world on what they can achieve it was a straightforward decision with a visit to the headquarters just outside Paris.

“We decided to choose UV Boosting due to the patented technology, robust build quality and technical ability within the team, which made it a great partnership” said Robert Greenow from Veenow Vineyard. “The benefits are huge across our 40 acre vineyard, these benefits are not only financial but also increase the sustainability of our spray regime,” added Robert.

The effect of using UV-C from the UV Boosting Flash Technology allows Veenow to:

• Reduce the risk of frost by up to 50% pre-stimulating the vines at bud burst with a single pass up to 48 hours before a frost period.

• Reduce the amount of chemicals by up to 60% when treating downy and powdery mildew with three to four stimulations per season.

• Reduce disease within the vineyard – 40% on average with mildews.

• Enhance vine vigour which leads to a potential 13% increase in yield as the vine has had less stress periods from stimulating self defence mechanisms prior to the problem developing within the vine.

Veenow plans to carry out four to five passes over the season but also run trials amongst its varieties such as Pinot Noir, Bacchus, Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier and Caberet Noir. “Interestingly the key benefit with a PIWI due to its existing resistance to mildews is frost protection and yield increase which alone pays for the application of UV-C,” said Robert Greenow.

“We decided to be the first in the UK as our passion is sustainability while maintaining quality clean grapes for harvest” explained Katie Greenow. “Combining this technology with digestate application and specialist cover cropping is hopefully setting an example that monoculture, mass production vineyards are different to us here,” she added.

“We are very excited at UV Boosting to have a first unit running in the UK in 2025” said Baptiste Rouesné, CEO of the company. “We have seen British vineyards grow rapidly in the last few years and hopefully we will be able to deploy many more units in the coming years” he added. 1995, £100. This is an Eldis caravan chassis used as a trailer. I have used it to transport long logs, telegraph poles, and trees.
