PROVEN DESIGN WITH DETAIL DEVELOPMENT

New Holland Roll-Belt balers were launched in 2013 to replace the variable chamber BR series. Offered in two sizes, RB150 and RB180, to produce bales of up to 1.50m and 1.80m in diameter respectively, it is the RB150 models that are more widely available on the used market.

ROLL-BELT RB150 SUPERFEED NEW HOLLAND

Year: 2014

Bale count: 30,000

Condition: Good

Comment: Dealer prepared. Fitted with less wide 380/55-17 tyres for narrower 2.41m width. SuperFeed and BaleCommand Plus controller with no ISO Bus. Price reflects full dealer preparation. Pay from £7,500 for similar model that has not been through a workshop. CropCutter models may be more worn at same bale count. Seek advice.

Price point: £12,000

Going back a decade or so, New Holland BR7000 balers design DNA was clearly based on the previous 600 series variable chamber models. These were launched way back in 1998. New Holland did, however, make numerous developments and model number changes to the BR series, with BR700, BR700A and finally BR7000 seeing various updates over the decade of BR production.

So now to the Roll-Belt RB series. These reached UK and Irish customers in 2014 and were a new design with evolution continuing but it is harder to outline when changes were made as there have been no model number changes. The later models do have revised colour schemes and decals, but as a used buyer you will see a 2014 RB baler will look much the same as a 2021 model.

MOST POPULAR VARIANTS

The most likely used finds will be RB150 models with a solid five tine bar 2.30m wide pick-up with either SuperFeed non-cut or CropCutter slicing rotor intake system. An ActiveSweep variant is available

ROLL-BELT RB150 SUPERFEED NEW HOLLAND

with a less ‘aggressive’ feed rotor to draw in the crop. These models were developed to meet the demands of those baling lighter hay, more brittle straw windrows and delicate crops such as lucerne/alfalfa.

ROLL-BELT RB150 SUPERFEED NEW HOLLAND

SuperFeed variants have a feed rotor with ‘W’ shaped pattern tines with a split ‘flow’ claimed to help even the passage of material into the bale chamber. This should make it easier to produce a consistent bale.

Most UK and Irish RB balers will have the wider 2.30m pick-up fitted, although a 2.0m unit of a different design will be fitted to the rarer ActiveSweep models. The feed system on RB balers includes side stub augers and a full width auger and vane system that will actively pass crop to the intake rotor.

CropCutter models have the same rotor pattern but pass incoming material over a bank of 15 retractable knives. The number of knives engaged can be reduced, most running just alternate blades to cover the central section of the bale.

BALER DEVELOPMENT

Used byers will face the dilemma of paying similar money for a good condition, lower bale count earlier baler versus a later machine that has done more work. Which will make the better buy? There is no easy answer to that but used prices may reflect condition and bale count more than baler age. A 2014 RB150 SuperFeed baler in good shape with a 10,000 bale count could well be a better buy than a later 2019 model but with double the bale count.

Where matters may change is with the current spec models. Although there are small detail design differences between balers made year on year, the key changes are between pre 2020 and post 2020 model year balers. On earlier balers, design developments differences should not

be seen as significant enough for you to select a later baler over an earlier model of similar condition and bale count. Where this changes, to a degree, is with post 2020 model year balers. These variants will offer some advantages.

KEY CHANGES UP TO 2020 MODEL YEAR

• From late 2018 production, the CropCutter was fitted with stronger rotor tines.

• From around 2019, the wind guard roller was moved closer to the ground to help prevent the pick-up tines flicking lighter material forward. The later roller has a 32% larger diameter and is around 7kg heavier than previous design. The pick-up tines on the outer edges were now angled to draw material in towards the centre of the pick-up and, with reshaped end plates, help improve wide swath retention.

• The net wrapper was revised from 2019, with the previous rearward cutting knife changed to a forward cut design. This was claimed to improve net wrapping

CASE IH

in general. Users suggest the improved design works more reliably.

• In late 2019, chain oiler capacity increased from 1.9 to 3.8 litres.

• From around 2020, a radial pin slip clutch fitted in place of the previous shear bolt pick-up drive. A revised pick-up guard was also introduced.

CHANGES FROM 2022

• New decals and colour scheme with yellow pick-up and black front panel. Side panel decals changed to ‘wave’ design.

• Bale Command II controller introduced with the same functions as earlier unit but symbols changed to match other balers in New Holland range.

• Uprated internal bearings with triple-lip seal added to the tailgate idler rolls. Now maintenance free.

• Diagnostic ISOBUS connector incorporated into wiring harness. The outlined changes are the main developments but there have been numerous tweaks made by New Holland that are not covered.

Mounted in pairs, the Flexible tine mount system works well but replacement tines can be expensive. There are five tine bars, with wear in the bearing supports worth looking out for on a baler that has done a lot of work. End on view of the current five-bar pick up does not show the subtle tweaks made that are claimed to enable later balers to cope better with awkward swaths and improve performance in a curved turn.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR

Drawbar: Look for damage and wear. More common on balers pulled at high transport speeds.

Main pto: Check the two halves slide freely and that guards are in good shape. Easy to overlook wear, but damaged guards are an easy spot. Guards can cost up to £1,000 to renew.

Main gearbox: Check the oil level. Look for signs of overheating. Leaks from the output bearing seal and for play in the pto input shaft are not unusual on a high bale count model. New bearings will typically resolve any problems but not cure backlash in the gearbox that can indicate heavy wear. Pick-up and tines: Look for cracks and weld repairs in the pick-up support brackets. Damaged pick-up wheel rims may see the tyre loose air so check the pressure. Tines, stripper plates and the stub augers are subject to damage as well as wear, so take time to really look at everything. Worth renewing the pick-up drive chain and sprockets if it has not been done already. The autolube system works well but also attracts debris. This can build up behind the guards in turn leading to premature wear. Pick-ups are critical to the performance of the baler. A dealer buy should be prepared for work but make no assumptions.

Feed rotor: On CropCutter models, check the knives are fitted and in good order. Most CropCutter balers have been run with half the knives so check for blanking plates. Dependent upon model and design, the side augers may show signs of wear and play in the related bearings.

Net wrap system: You can spend a long time looking over the net wrap system and

still not spot something that will lead to it playing up in the field. Key checks include looking for damage or bends on the knife supports and to play in the pivot points, checking the wiring to the drive motor and sensor. The motor bolt can work loose. If buying a baler from a non-dealer source a professional check is recommended. Bale chamber: The chamber on all

models has three forming rolls and four 273mm wide belts with an in-cab adjustable dual ram density adjustment system. The roller bearings, work hard and will need a proper check pre-season. Check the roller end plates for fatigue cracks, this being more likely on a baler used to make heavy haylage bales, the more so on RB180 models. Rollers can shear if they have flexed due to uneven bearing wear.

NOTE: Roller bearing wear is not confined to the large rollers, the net feed and belt-tension rollers all needing a thorough check. A baler with around 20,000 bales on the clock running its original bearings may need attention.

Belts: Belt life is often determined more by stone damage that just wear. The two outer belts can fray where they have come into contact with the sides of the baler but still work fine.

Driveline: When looking over the bale chamber drive chains, a key check is to ensure the lubrication system and related applicator brushes are in good order. The oil in the reservoir should be clean and the reservoir plastic allow you to see how much oil is ‘in the tank’. Chain and sprocket life is hard to predict, but typically you can expect these parts to last for between 30,000 and 40,000 bales.

Current RB models are fitted with a lower and larger diameter wind guard roll that is designed to prevent lighter swaths getting flicked up by the pick-up tines. They also have a revised pick-up guard.

The net wrap sensor wires can snag on the net and wear through (left) and the drive motor mounting bolts can also work loose.

Operators can ‘over stuff’ any baler. With an RB150, it pays to limit the amount of material rolled up to prevent production of an overtight bale, particularly on Crop Cutter models. Take time to inspect the intake rotor on all models.

Despite the close fitting cover, the pick-up drive train will soon ingest debris that will stick to the lube applied to the chain. Wear in this area can be reduced by regular cleaning.

WHAT’S USED

Numerous detail changes have been made year on year to RB balers, the original 1.9 litre capacity lube reservoir featuring integral brackets that could fail, the later clamp system (right) resolving the problem. Current models have a 3.8 litre reservoir.

<< Bale density system: Dual density rams are fitted. Look for wear in the pivot points and seal leaks. Bent rams are rare but can occur so look over carefully. Sensor wires can chafe or fatigue harden where they enter the sensor body leading to errors. A dealer check to ensure all the sensors are in good shape is recommended pre-season. General: It will take at least a couple of hours to look over a used baler, more if you are looking over a private buy. Look for damage and poor repairs. Good general condition is always a good sign, but shiny panels can hide wear and tear.

The four belts are tough and can last the life of the baler. Look for cuts and stone damage. Frayed outer edges may indicate the belts are not running true, so will need a check. Note these rolls are covered in mud. RB balers can roll up most crops, to include bean and rape straw. Crops that pose problems can include short, sticky high sugar crops and short brittle straw.

WHAT’S USED

Bearing wear is to be expected on a baler that has rolled a lot of bales, ignoring play leading to problems can include leading to the rollers shearing (left). Dust collected around the perimeter of a bearing shows the autolube has been doing its job.

SUMMARY

Condition and bale count should be matched to your projected workload. Nothing new in that. A key question will be to consider if one of these variable chamber models is right for your needs. If you will expect the baler to be worked by multiple operators, be ‘set and forget’ and want to bale a lot of heavy grass then perhaps you may be better to looked at a fixed chamber alternative. If you are a sole operator who understands why it is not always a good idea to stuff as much into a bale as possible and has a lot of straw to bale then you may find an RB to your liking. These balers can, with the right operator, roll up a wide range of crops, from pea haulm and bean straw through to brittle cereal straw and lucerne. Purchase a well-prepared used buy, keep an

If the rollers you are trying to check for bearing play are under tension, this can mask wear. They need to be free so they can be run with no load. A proper baler check will take several hours, so allow time to do a proper job.

With no net wrap roll in place, look over the rollers and check for play in the feed roll bearings. The small roller bearings (left) are not difficult to replace.

The long awaited Cheffins live and online Roger Desborough sale took place on Saturday 21 June when a select band of connoisseurs attended Church Farm, Wenhaston, Halesworth, Suffolk. Staged in one of the farm buildings the highlight early on was the Doe tool carrier with Doe 4-furrow reversible plough which sold for £5,800.

The 1919 Overtime no.13508 had a wonderful providence to it and had been with Derek Hackett, John Moffitt, David Bond and Roger when it sold for £35,000 in grade 2 condition. The 1919 Saunderson G no.1689 which Cheffins had sold to Roger in April 2011 changed hands here at £43,000.

ALL RECORDS BROKEN

At the superb Tractorfest at Newby Hall, Ripon, North Yorkshire over 7-8 June approximately 1,300 tractors were in attendance. One of the major features was the Fordson E27N in its 80th year.

On Saturday morning at 8am our correspondent counted some 57 examples on site, not enough to beat the 71 set at Belvoir Castle in 2006. However before he left the show at 3pm for his six hour drive home

he counted 98 on site including County CFT crawlers, but there could have been more on site, you might know differently.

All in all a new world record has been set thanks to the Ford and Fordson Association and friends! Congratulations for all those involved it was certainly a superb display and a tribute to a tractor that proved to be strong and reliable with 230,000 made 1945-52.

JOHN DEERES HOT AT LEEDS

The latest Euro Auctions sale on Wednesday 11 June lived up to expectations when it came to the tractors. There was lots of interest as the machines came under the hammer both from those on site, and those who were bidding via the internet.

First up were a series of crawler tractors that saw a Morooka MK100S come out on top. In great condition, and complete with rotovator, it looked to be a good buy, and with 2,017 hours on the clock, went on to sell for £10,500 grade 10.

Then came the regular tractors with John Deere being just ‘hot’ on the day. The best price of the day, was for a 2023 6R215 that was

The most expensive tractor in the sale was this 2023 John Deere 6R 215 that was showing only 819 hours sold for £91,500 despite being a category S insurance loss

Catching the eye was this 2017 JCB Fastrac that was in very good condition and was showing 6,164 hours sold for £44,500

2024 John Deere 6155M had 4,209 hours it went on to sell for £62,000

fitted with front pto and linkage. With only 819 hours on the clock, it went on to sell for £91,500 despite being reported as being a category S insurance loss. Somewhat cheaper was a couple of John Deere 6155Ms. The first was showing 4,209 hours on the clock and sold for £62,000 while a slightly older example from 2021 with 3,885 hours behind it made £55,000 both grade 10.

Moving away from the John Deere name were a couple of almost identical 2022 Valtra T195 Versu’s. Both were fitted with front linkage and pto and had 5,085 and 4,825 hours on the clock respectively. Their similarity was carried over to the action itself, when both sold for £60,000 each grade 10.

Other tractors doing well in the sale included a 2017 Fendt 828 Vario Profiplus that was complete with front linkage and pto. Showing 7,865 hours on the clock, it sold for £48,000, while a 2017 JCB Fastrac, that was also in top condition with 6,164 hours behind it, went for £44,500 both grade 10.

After a 2021 Deutz Fahr 6165 Warrior that was also fitted with front linkage and pto was showing 5,148 hours on the clock sold for £43,000 grade 11. It was time for a series of New Holland tractors to go under the hammer. The most expensive turned out to be a 2020 T7.715S which made £37,500 grade 10 while a 2014 T6.165 that was fitted with a Quicke Q51 front loader, that was showing 8,919 hours on the clock went on to sell for £27,500 grade 10.

Also looking the part was a 2014 Claas Axion 850 that sold for £31,000 grade 10 – a good price for one of these. The best of the Case-IH tractors turned out to be a 140 Maxxum from 2009 that was fitted with a Quicke 150 front loader and with 8,537 hours behind it in grade 10 condition sold for £20,000.

Standing out among the Massey Fergusons on offer was a 7620 DYNA 6 that dated from 2014 complete with front linkage and showing 5,745 hours on the clock grade 11 in very good condition overall and sold for £34,000. A slightly older 2009 Massey Ferguson 5470 with MF955 front loader showing 5,637 hours managed to sell for £27,500.

Finally, a very tidy 1947 Field Marshall Series 1 took centre stage ready for the rally field (after a polish) sold for just £5,250, rounding off a very interesting sale for the tractor enthusiast.

KENT'S OLDEST TRACTOR

It is with great sadness that east Kent steam and vehicle preservationist Stephen Brett has suffered the loss of his wife Jenny after a long fight with cancer. All at Farm Machinery send our deepest condolences to Stephen and the family at this time.

However with encouragement from his family Stephen used the MartEye online system for the first time where he secured the top lot at the Hobbs Parker late Brian Thompson, Brattle Farm Museum Sale, Staplehurst, Kent on Saturday 14 June. This was for the Maidstone built 1916 Weeks-Dungey hop garden tractor which he first saw in 1971 at the Kent County Show when it blew core plugs out of the block!

There are two early Simplex examples of this make recorded alive today and three known of the later 1920 + New Simplex, where at least one and a half examples lived at this site at one time. These had worked for the Hope family at Frittenden as had Brian’s 1916 tractor. The fruit tractors were designed by farmer Dungey and were built by William Weeks at their Perseverance Works (near the old gas works), Waterside, Maidstone, Kent.

The company even made some steam portable engines and a few crude traction engines. However they were very respected in the hop and soft fruit industry of the area, making pumps, sprayers and so much more. They also made a good number of Fordson Standard F and N hop conversions and even converted a number of Ferguson Brown A tractors for use in Kent, East Sussex, Hereford and even southern Scotland where there could be a soft fruit farm. The company became a bit stale in their ways after WW2 and lots of staff left for other agricultural machinery adventures and by the 1950s the company gradually faded away before WW2 the company employed approximately 250 people.

was always a delight to see at the Kent County Show and was a great tractor for our correspondent to commentate on.

The sister to this example was based for decades at the South East England Wye Agricultural College (1901-1995) which ended up part of the British School of Mines, London which is now all finished and dispersed. This example ended in a nursery in Devon which Cheffins went on to sell for £41,000 at Sutton to the late Derek Mellor who restored it back to running condition before his widow sold it to Northamptonshire. It was painted grey, but Brian’s earlier example was brown and blue in Brian’s time. However the original colour has found to be mid green on the wheels.

Stephen’s example is to be sorted out by his chief engineer Brian Hope from Yalding and the tractor will need repainting as well. Our correspondent is so pleased that Kent’s oldest tractor is to stay in its home county and will be taken out to some of the better shows when sorted out, that’s for sure.

As for the three other major lots, the tired, but running grade 2 1916 Overtime N that featured on the second front over of Tractor & Machinery magazine sold for a good £30,000. The 1921 International Junior 8-16 sold for £14,500 grade 4 and the 1919 Austin R (English) perhaps the best here £16,600 grade 4.

BIDDENDEN TRACTOR FEST

As always the South East section of the FFA will be at the Kent Agricultural Society’s excellent Biddenden Tractor Fest on 16-17 August at Holden Farm, Sissinghurst Road, Biddenden TN27 8EZ.

This event sees over 14,000 people attend this superb event which is full of so much including a fine display of approximately 500 exhibits made up of: tractors, steam engines, cars, commercials and many more.

Last year the FFA celebrated its 20th anniversary with a special ring display and so much more put together by Rodney Gibson and his fellow Kent members with commentary given by our correspondent. The 2025 show is set to be a great success particularly if you are a Ford lover do go

HELLINGLY FESTIVAL OF TRANSPORT

If you want an event that covers everything and has an excellent autojuble and trade stands it has to be the Hellingly Festival of Transport at Broad Farm, Hellingly near Eastbourne, East Sussex BN27 4DS on 23-25 August. It has been going for nearly 50 years now and grows bigger every year and has a fine agricultural selection and is very much worth visiting.

JCB LAKESIDE 5 RAISES THOUSANDS FOR CHARITY

Almost 450 runners braved soaring temperatures to compete in the annual JCB Lakeside 5 and Fun Run – raising £4,300 for charity.

The competitors laced up their running shoes to take on either a five-mile course or two-mile fun run around the picturesque JCB World HQ at Rocester. While most dressed to keep cool as temperatures nudged 28°C, some runners donned colourful fancy dress outfits based on the Wizard of Oz. Charles Bevan, 78, of Abbots Bromley, dressed as the Tin Man, while his son Jason and fellow JCB Lakeside Running Club members Liz Carrington, Helena Fisher and Ben Ord, came as the Lion, Wicked Witch, Dorothy, and Scarecrow. The event raised £4,300 towards JCB’s £2 million appeal for the NSPCC.

Former JCB employees Charles Bevan and Mick Grindey, 63, of Uttoxeter, have the unique distinction of having run in every single JCB Lakeside 5 since the first was held in 1983 – a total of 40 races, three having been cancelled due to Foot and Mouth and Covid. They were presented with mounted scale models of JCB backhoe loaders to honour 40 years of helping organise the JCB Lakeside 5.

Charles said: “This year is full of mixed emotions as it is likely to be my last race. I am 79 next month and I have run every year dressed as everything from Popeye to Fred

Flintstone and even a pantomime horse. I have loved every minute, and I am so proud of what we have achieved raising thousands of pounds for good causes. The support we receive every year is amazing and it was great to see so many people here again this year as we mark our 40th race here at JCB.”

Race Director Mick Grindey, who joined Charles at the starting line, said: “It was 28°C on the starting line, so we have been touched by all the support this year. It was definitely one of the busiest we have had and to have run beside Charles on each one over the past 40 events has been an honour.”

Ben Marshall, from Werrington, was the first JCB man to cross the line. Based at JCB’s World HQ, it is the 3rd time he has taken part. Joined by a team of runners from the Backhoe Loader assembly line, he completed the course in 29 minutes and 53 seconds.

Dental hygienist Angela Kiwomya came in at 49 minutes and 50 seconds to claim the place as first JCB woman over the finish line. She said: “It is the first time I have taken part and was great to be part of the event. The atmosphere is amazing, and it was rewarding to do something for such a good cause.”

Chris Gidlow, of City of Stoke Runners, was the overall winner securing first place for the second time in a row. Beating his last time by

just over 10 seconds he made it across the line in 26 minutes and 44 seconds. First female was Joanne Bentley, from Stone, who also claimed the title for the second time crossing the line in 35 minutes 1 second.

Uttoxeter Road Runners had a team of 25 runners with Andrew Butterworth, of Uttoxeter, dressed as a dinosaur for his 10th JCB Lakeside 5. He said: “I normally just wear a wig and tutu so it was definitely a lot warmer with the full dinosaur outfit in this heat. The crowd were brilliant though and it was a great atmosphere.”

JCB’s Paula Woods, who works in finance at World HQ, took to the track for the first time with colleague Mark Jeffs. The 54-year-old said she was keen to take on the challenge: “I figured if I didn’t do it now, I never would, and I have found the whole experience really inspiring. It was a lot harder than expected with the hills.”

Among the other competitors were a 15-strong team of JCB India colleagues and their families. They are part of a group of design engineers in the UK on secondment from JCB India’s factory in Pune they wanted to join colleagues in racing. Badjarang Jadhav said: “It was a great experience to share with our families, and we have all enjoyed being part of such a fun event here at JCB.”

COMBINING HIGH LOAD CAPACITY WITH 8M LIFTING HEIGHT

With the new Scorpion 848 with its Varipower Plus drive and 156hp, Claas is closing the gap between the 756 and 960 models, extending the telehandler product range to nine models.

Since the first Scorpion telehandlers, developed and built in collaboration between Claas and Liebherr, were unveiled at Agritechnica 2017, the product range has been continuously expanded. Claas is now launching the Scorpion 848 as the latest model from Telfs in Austria. It combines a high load capacity of 4,800kg with a considerable lifting height of up to 8m, positioning it between the Scorpion 756 and 960.

POWERFUL AND EFFICIENT

A Deutz four-cylinder engine developing 156hp ensures uncompromising power in the Scorpion 848. During loading and stacking, Dynamic Power automatically adjusts the engine speed relative to the position of the joystick and thus to the desired lift and loader speed. This enables faster and even more efficient loading cycles and relieves the operator. When the telescopic arm is lowered without load, the engine speed is automatically reduced, which reduces fuel consumption. In addition, the reduced transport speed of 1,600rpm at 40km/h ensures energy-efficient repositioning. Thanks to Dynamic Cooling, the fan speed

automatically adjusts to the required cooling demand – this saves additional fuel and guarantees more power reserves under challenging operating conditions.

The Scorpion 848 is equipped with the fully automatic, stepless, hydrostatic Varipower Plus drive as standard. In addition to the Varipower wide-angle hydrostat with a 45° pivot angle, a second variable displacement motor with a 32° pivot angle is used here. Together with the standard differential lock, this ensures that sufficient thrust, tractive force and traction are always available. In figures: Up to 103 kN thrust and up to 20 tonnes trailer load – infinitely variable hydrostatically and therefore sensitive and precise in all working areas.

STRONG ARM, SMART LOADER

The articulation point of the telescopic arm is positioned low on the chassis for maximum stability. Lengthy overlaps between the telescopic elements guarantee torsional rigidity and stability even with the heaviest loads. A lateral support integrated into the frame increases safety when working with long reach or extreme leverage in asymmetrical pushing operation. An optional fine control further increases precision and safety, especially when stacking heavy loads at great heights or when working with dangerous goods. The standard boom suspension for the telescopic arm prevents the machine from bouncing during fast loading manoeuvres, for example when handling straw bales.

The comprehensive Smart Loading functions on the Scorpion 848 provide operators with the following automatic functions and assistance systems:

• Automatic bucket return to the previously saved position: A considerable gain in time and comfort for repetitive work cycles.

• Automatic bucket shake function: The tilt rams ensure reliable emptying of the bucket or even distribution of trickling material, even when the material is very sticky.

• Automatic retraction of the telescopic arm: The boom is automatically retracted when the telescopic arm is lowered – making work much easier for the operator. With a hydraulic capacity of up to 187 l/min and 270 bar working pressure, the load-sensing hydraulic system ensures that fast loading cycles are no problem, even with heavy loads. Additional control circuits

for attachments and a choice of single or double-acting connections at the rear round off the Scorpion 848's equipment.

BEST ALL-ROUND VISIBILITY

The generously designed driver's cab offers ideal working conditions for working comfortably, safely and focussed, even over long working days. The cab concept impresses with an almost 360-degree all-round view, and blind spots can be minimised using up to three optional cameras. Inside, you will find a cab that enables effortless and precise control thanks to the well thought-out ergonomics and intuitive arrangement of all operating and control instruments.

HIGH ENTRY NUMBERS FOR THE BRITISH PLOUGHING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Organisers of the British National Ploughing Championships & Country Festival have announced a high number of entries for this year’s event, set to take place on 11-12 October 2025 at Allesley, near Coventry, West Midlands.

Over 240 of the country’s top ploughmen and women are all eager to compete for National titles with some also trying to win the chance to represent their country at next year’s World and European Ploughing Contests. This year’s strong turnout reflects growing interest in traditional and competitive ploughing, with entries spanning across a number of categories, from vintage tractors and horse-drawn ploughs to the more modern conventional and reversible classes.

“We are thrilled with the level of interest this year,” said Stephen Cheeseman, Chairman of the Society of Ploughmen. “It is a testament to the enduring appeal of the Championships and the skill, passion and

heritage behind the sport of ploughing.”

Held in a different part of the country each year, this time it will be held on a huge 100 hectare site which has been provided by the Brandreth Family and the Sir Thomas White Trust.

The two-day event will not only feature the country's best ploughing talent but will also host a large stand area on grass with agricultural companies selling everything you might need on a farm, from a spanner to a tractor; and a wide variety of shopping and craft stalls with everything you would expect to see at a country show.

There will also be demonstrations of steam ploughing engines and of new farm machinery; and displays of vintage tractors and equipment, so it’s a unique chance for visitors to see how farming has changed over hundreds of years, in a working environment.

KRAMP LAUNCHES OWN-BRAND PTO SHAFTS

Leading agricultural parts supplier Kramp has launched a range of pto shafts, which it claims are available at a competitive price. Manufactured by Comer and marketed under the Kramp brand, utilising its distribution network. The range spans T10 to T60 series shafts, including both with and without clutches. The pto guards are black, which according to Kramp provides higher UV resistance and a longer service life than conventional yellow guards.

“We believe farmers will find these ptos are very competitively priced, and it is a named brand from a recognised manufacturer,” said Adam Hubbard, product specialist for Kramp. “To obtain an exact price, farmers should contact their nearest Kramp dealer.

HAYNES AGRICULTURAL TAKE OVER WEST KENT FOR CASE IH

Haynes Bros Ltd has agreed Heads of Terms for Ernest Doe & Sons Ltd’s Case IH Agricultural Business at Woodchurch near Ashford, giving it coverage of East and West Kent for the Case IH farm machinery brand.

Haynes Bros Ltd have successfully operated the Case IH franchise in East Kent for over 20 years. However, having two competing agricultural dealers operating in close proximity in Kent, both with the same franchise, has been far from ideal for both parties and it has become clear that this is not commercially viable for the long term.

Following a strategic review of dealer coverage in the region and in close collaboration with CNH Industrial, one of our principal franchise partners, a mutual decision has been made to consolidate our agricultural operations in the Ashford area

within Haynes Bros Ltd, centralising these operations at Great Chart.

As part of this agreement, the agricultural business currently operated by Ernest Doe Power, at Woodchurch, Ashford, including the agricultural staff, will be integrated into Haynes Bros Ltd’s network and Ernest Doe and Son’s Woodchurch branch will close.

While day-to-day operations will transfer to Haynes Bros from 25 July 2025, Ernest Doe & Sons will currently retain responsibility for the sale agreements on units they have sold to date, including outstanding account balances. However, as Haynes will now cover both East and West Kent for Case IH farm machinery, including Case IH manufacturer warranty, customers are invited to open an account with Haynes Bros Ltd for in territory parts and service work.

PRECISION RTK-GUIDANCE TRANSFORMS INTER-ROW HOEING

Precision RTK guidance has transformed the speed, accuracy, ease and effectiveness of inter-row hoeing on an arable farm in Suffolk which operates the latest Fendt tractors with VarioGuide RTK. Accurate to +/-2cm, the system on the 942 Vario is used to direct drill cereal crops in bands with a 6m Claydon Evolution, while that on the 724 Vario guides a 6m Claydon TerraBlade which is steered automatically using the tractor’s front wheels.

“Our previous drill tractor had only basic RTK, so the TerraBlade had to be manually steered, which restricted forward speed but still reduced weed numbers by 65% -70%” said Jeff Claydon. “VarioGuide RTK takes inter-row hoeing to the next level and this season we used it on over 150ha, with higher output and improved weed control. Compared with cereals drilled on narrow/ conventional row spacings the 17cm banded rows at 32cm centres provided plenty of tolerance and gave us peace of mind that the crop would not be damaged.”

With weeds becoming increasingly resistant to herbicides and little new chemistry on the horizon the TerraBlade provides a low-cost,

mechanical method of controlling them in combinable, band-sown crops. It is popular with farmers wanting to operate more effectively and efficiently, while organic and regenerative farmers also use it to reduce weed burdens and costs. Keeping the area between the seeded bands clear of weeds during the early stages of crop growth reduces competition for nutrients, light, air and water, so young plants grow strong and healthy.

The relatively dry weather in early April provided ideal conditions for the TerraBlade. Operating 1cm to 2cm deep, the standard 150mm wide scalping blades sliced through the soil removing weeds between the seeded bands but leaving the crop intact. Operating at up to 12km/h, depending on field and soil conditions, it averaged 6-7 ha/hr, almost double the previous figure, and caused no damage, even at Growth Stage 32. All cereal crops on the Claydon farm are virtually weedfree, and the shallow soil mulch created by the blades helped to retain moisture.

Trials by a major agronomy company on another farm where grassweeds had become problematic after years of conventional crop establishment measured

The TerraBlade’s scalping blades operate 1cm to 2cm deep and slice through the roots of weeds growing between the rows of band-sown cereals

over 900 blackgrass seeds heads/m2 in an untreated area. Where herbicides were used in combination with a Claydon Straw Harrow and a Claydon TerraBlade researchers recorded just 13/m2, a 98.5% reduction. This gave a yield increase worth £256/ha, which quickly covered the implement’s cost.

Designed to work in direct drilled cereal crops established using Claydon trailed and mounted direct drills, the TerraBlade costs approximately £2,000-£2,500 per metre, a fraction that of more complex hoes. Available in widths to match Claydon drills, the TerraBlade’s simple design means that there is little to maintain, it will give years of reliable service, and the low operating costs allow it to essentially pay for itself.

LARGE-SCALE MOWERS WITH A MAXIMUM WORKING WIDTH OF 10.7M

Claas is renewing its Disco 1100 Business large-scale mowers with working widths of 9.60m to 10.70m and is introducing a double roller drive for the RC version.

The two new Disco 1100 C Business and 1100 RC Business combine a large working width with maximum choice in terms of conditioning intensity and compact transport dimensions in a unique way. The telescopic arms of the large-scale mowers, which are up to 10.7m wide, have not only been reinforced, but also fitted with additional spring-loaded sliding elements. This ensures a constant contact pressure at all times, which has a noticeably positive effect on driving comfort.

The maximum working width of 10.7m can be reduced hydraulically and steplessly to 9.6m, whereby both arms can be adjusted

independently of each other or synchronised to ensure optimum overlap in tight corners or when working on side slopes. Despite the two 3.8m wide mowing units, the mower remains under 4.0m in height during road transport.

The Disco 1100 C Business and 1100 RC Business are equipped as standard with the Active Float hydropneumatic ground pressure control, which can be individually adjusted for each arm. It enables the mower bar pressure to be continuously adjusted during operation. With the optional slope control, the mower automatically adjusts the ground pressure and overlap to the front mower depending on the side slope. The newly designed HD swivel joint on the headstock ensures significantly better accessibility when attaching and removing the mower.

POWERFUL CONDITIONERS FOR A WIDE RANGE OF CONDITIONS

The Disco 1100 Business is available with two different conditioners to speed up the drying process:

• Disco 1100 RC Business with a polyurethane roller conditioner for gentle conditioning with V-shaped interlocking polyurethane rollers - ideal for leafy crops such as lucerne. The roller spacing can be conveniently adjusted using the ratchet spanner supplied. The standard double drive with scissor gearbox ensures an even crop flow, even when harvesting large quantities.

• Disco 1100 C Business with tine conditioner and spirally arranged Y-steel tines for powerful grass harvesting. The conditioner intensity can be flexibly

adjusted for maximum efficiency, and the tines can avoid stones thanks to their elastic mount to prevent tine breakage or damage to the drives.

Robust steel swathing plates and a Hardox conditioner bonnet ensure maximum stability and durability for all conditioner variants, even under extreme conditions of use. All Disco 1100 C / RC Business models are also equipped as standard with variably adjustable swathing plates for precise swath shaping. The Disco RC models with roller conditioner also have two telescopic additional swath plates – ideal for particularly narrow swaths, which prevent the crop from fading too much in lucerne, for example. Swath widths down to 0.90m can be achieved with these additional swath plates. The setting can be made flexibly and without tools in just a few simple steps.

CONVENIENT AND AUTOMATED

Business operation with load-sensing and ISOBUS enables convenient and semi-automated interaction with modern tractors and optimum utilisation of all machine functions. Setting and operation, for example of the programmable headland management, is largely carried out via the ISOBUS terminal – regardless of whether the mower’s being controlled using CEBIS, CEMIS 700 or CEMIS 1200. In addition, freely assignable F keys allow individual customisation of the controls - for example for the telescopic arms, individual lifting of the arms or regulation of the Active Float ground pressure during travel.

A slope control system with inclination sensor can be supplied as an option to conveniently adjust and mirror the Active Float support pressure control and arm positions to counteract slope drift and striping at the touch of a button.

COMPACT SOLUTION FOR MEDIUM-SIZED FARMS

The Fortis LT’s robust design considers the increase in tractor powers in recent years, harvest residues or catch crops performance and incorporation quality. The combination of a 4-bar design, a 27cm tine spacing and an 85cm frame height ensures an enormous clearance for working without clogging at a maximum working depth of 30cm. The intensive flow of soil in the machine offers a high mixing quality. The well-proven TerraGrip tine system with large radii on the tine shaft ensures a low horsepower requirement and compared to the proven Fortis AS, the LT is even more compact and shorter.

A special feature is the placement of the levelling tools as close as possible to the last row of tines to allow the flow of soil to be directed into the levelling discs. The chassis can be moved out of the working area and therefore does not prevent the flow of soil from leaving the tine zone. This contributes to the large clearance with perfect levelling quality.

The Fortis LT can be customised to meet individual customer requirements and operating conditions. The well-known MulchMix coulter system, with its wide range of coulter options and wings as well as the wide range of packer options, contributes to the flexibility of the machine. The angle of the double packers can be adjusted by means of the proven aluminium clips, a system that is unique in this class. This allows adjustment of the contact pressure of the packer roller, resulting in better consolidation in dry conditions and increases the load-bearing capacity in wet conditions. This can be individually adapted to changing soil conditions.

JCB RETURNED TO ROYAL WELSH SHOW WITH NEW FARM MACHINES

JCB Agriculture and its dealers in Wales collaborated to make a timely return to the Royal Welsh Show with the roll-out of a host of new JCB farm machines.

Among the newcomers were the newlyupgraded 435S wheeled loader – a big hit with silage-making and muck spreading contractors throughout the UK; two all-new Telemaster telescopic wheeled loaders; and the latest-spec Teleskid tracked skid-steer loader.

JCB Agriculture Managing Director, John Smith, said: “Having launched an unprecedented number of important new materials handling machines, we felt it important to give our agricultural dealers in Wales the opportunity to present and explain the features and benefits of these new products.

“We’re working with our agricultural dealers Chandlers RFM, Emyr Evans, J E Lawrence and Rea Valley Tractors to exhibit as many of the new machines as we can,

while also featuring the JCB Fastrac iCON and other established products.”

JCB’s new TM110 telescopic wheeled loader is capable of lifting 1.1 tonnes with a 3.5m lift height, and is powered by a 50hp engine with all-hydrostatic drive.

Standing just 2.2m tall and 1.56m wide, it can genuinely ‘access all areas’ while providing more lift capacity, reach and load placement flexibility than a fixed arm loader.

Also designed with buildings accessibility in mind, the 109hp JCB TM280 and 130hp TM280S measure a best-in-class 2.6m to the top of the cabin, enabling access through low doorways, despite having a full-size cab shared with other Telemaster loaders and delivering lift of 2.75 tonnes to 4.8m.

Apart from being more powerful, the TM280S raises the bar with its DualTech VT hydrostatic/mechanical transmission providing optimal low- and higher-speed working.

JCB’s 435S loading shovel – universally

popular with silage contractors – has been given a further performance boost with Dynamic power increased 12% to 282hp for a class-leading 19hp per tonne power-to-weight ratio, and more torque across the rev range. Transmission upgrades result in more effective power delivery, direct drive auto lock-up for the road gears and operatorconfigurable lock-up for working speeds.

The JCB Teleskid 3TS-8T is a tracked skid-steer loader that, like its wheeled counterparts, has three unique features: a single loading arm for greater visibility, a side cab door for safer machine access, and a telescopic loading arm giving greater lift height and reach than any other skid loader.

The latest model, with the same 1.7 tonnes (0.7 tonnes to full height) and 4.03m of upwards reach as before, has a new 3-litre JCB DieselMAX engine that is smaller and lighter, more fuel-efficient and ‘greener’ in terms of emissions than its predecessor, while generating more torque and the same 74hp.

NEW COMPACT CONTRACTOR TRAILER

Slurry and digestate management specialist Tramspread has introduced a compact single-axle version of the popular Contractor Trailer engine driven pump unit.

The Contractor Trailer carries everything needed for an umbilical spreading system with a self-contained engine-driven pump unit, compressor for blowing out the drag hose, hose spool carrying cradle and storage for tools, couplings and sundries.

The new introduction fills a gap in the range for a more compact version, combining the same ability and performance with reduced dimensions to make it easier to navigate through narrow and uneven gateways and in awkward yards. The first to leave the factory has already been bought by a Scottish contractor.

“The twin-axle Contractor Trailer is ideal for most of our customers, but we are quite aware that access can be limited in some areas, for example in certain

parts of Wales and Scotland,” explained Tramspread managing director Terry Baker. “We always aim to support our customers with products tailored to their specific needs, so we have developed a compact and manoeuvrable Contractor Trailer which still incorporates all of the well-liked design features but carries one hose reel rather than two.”

The first Contractor Trailers were made for Tramspread’s own contracting division in 1998. These early single-axle models were replaced with the new twin-axle version for 2013 which was updated in 2022. All models are designed as a purpose-built unit rather than converted from a trailer chassis.

The new single-axle version can be fitted with a 175hp or 238hp six-cylinder FPT engine, Bauer, Doda or Cri-Man pump, compressors of 140 or 180CFM output and optional GSM or radio type remote control systems with associated high-tech features.

The 900 litre fuel tank has been repositioned underneath the engine and pump, and as always considerable thought has been put into operator convenience with suction and delivery hose connections at low level. The 1000m hose spool is loaded into its cradle from the front and quickly and easily secured with pins – no straps are needed. Generous toolboxes provide ample storage.

The sprung axle is fitted with 50k rated 435/50R19.5 tyres and air-brakes. The drawbar is configured to allow the towing tractor to carry a dribble bar in the linkage, allowing one operator to move an entire umbilical system. Total chassis length is 6.3m, which is over 2m shorter than the twin-axle model.

The full-range of options can be fitted, including a suction hose transport kit, sponge ball (pig) launcher and the new 360 degree camera which was introduced earlier this year.

FULLY ELECTRIC TRACTOR

Following the successful launch of the Fendt e100 V Vario in Europe in 2024, Fendt has added the new e100 Vario tractor to its offering in the UK & Ireland.

The Fendt e100 Vario is available in two variants, an e107 V, specifically for operation in narrow environments such as vineyards and orchards, and the e-100 S.

Using the same battery unit as the e107 V, the Fendt e100 S Vario has been designed for the utility, amenity and leisure sectors. In mainstream agriculture it will also be an attractive option for vegetable growers and livestock farms, especially those with their own energy production.

“The Fendt e107 S and V Vario will be available to order from Autumn 2025 and are in production at the Marktoberdorf tractor plant. Both the new e100 S and e107 V are supported and serviced by the Fendt dealer network, with trained technicians able to help introduce farmers and growers to the technology and help them reap the full benefit of these innovative machines,” explained Fendt’s Ed Dennett.

The Fendt e107 V Vario model has an

external width from 1.07 metres and a height of approx. 2.45 metres. The new e100 S Vario is wider, at 2.16 metres, and higher at 2.64 metres with standard tyres, making it closer in size to the diesel powered Fendt 200 Vario. There are two specifications for the e100 Vario including Profi and Profi+.

The drive train of the Fendt e100 S Vario is shared with the smaller e107 V, and includes a battery with an electric motor and Fendt’s Vario transmission which works in three driving modes. The maximum power range according to ECE R85 is 50 kW (68 hp) in Eco mode. In Dynamic mode, up to 55 kW (75

hp) is available and, as peak drive power, the machine provides up to 66 kW (90 hp) for short periods in Dynamic+ mode and offers a maximum torque of 347 Nm.

“With a battery capacity of 100 kWh, the tractor achieves an operating time of around 4-7 hours when used in the partial load range, such as for mechanical weed control or planting work. Energy-intensive operations, like using a trailer in transport, will reduce the operating time,” said Mr Dennett.

The Fendt e100 S Vario can be optionally equipped ex-works with the Fendt Cargo 3X65 front loader. The design of the Fendt

comfort cab is optimised for use with a front loader, with a roof window that offers the best view with a 100° viewing angle. This facilitates front loader work at height, such as storing bales.

“An optional 3L-joystick can be used to operate the front loader which has an integrated directional shift function so operators will not need to change their grip,” added Mr Dennett.

EMISSION-FREE WORKING

For farms generating renewable energies, both the e107 V and the e100 S Vario are virtually CO2 neutral, which means CO2 emissions and the tractor's running costs are significantly reduced. Further cost savings are realised by not having exhaust gas aftertreatment, engine filters and engine oil to run the machine.

The electrically powered tractor is quieter than machines with a conventional diesel engine. This extends the operating time in noise-sensitive areas including around livestock, and in residential or urban areas. Approved for a speed of up to 40 km/h, the

e-tractor can also be used for short-distance transport to reduce fuel costs.

QUICK AND EASY RECHARGE WITHOUT ADDITIONAL INVESTMENT

In line with the automotive standard, the Fendt e100 models are equipped with a CCS2 socket and is compatible with standard wall outlets or public charging points. Many rural areas are yet to benefit from a comprehensive infrastructure with DC fast-charging sockets (superchargers), so the Type 2 plug enables charging via alternating current up to 22 kW. The electric Fendts can also be charged via a widely used industrial socket with 32 A in combination with a mobile charger with 22 kW. With this charging capacity, the battery can be fully charged within approx. 5 hours.

Ready for future developments, DC fast charging with up to 80 kW charging power is possible via a CCS socket. Crucially for more demanding operators, Fendt’s battery can be charged from 20% to 80% in around 45 minutes.

OPTIONAL FENDT CHARGING INFRASTRUCTURE

Fendt also offers a mobile 22 kW quickcharging cable set, including a wall bracket via the AGCO Parts division. The charging cable has adapters for 16 and 32 A so that it can be used for different conditions and owners can opt for a wall socket with optional Fendt branding. The integrated software enables charging with 11 or 22 kW.

SPECIALLY DEVELOPED TYRES

The electric Fendts are equipped with 340/70R24 tyres for the front axle and 480/70R30 tyres for the rear axle, as standard. Fendt and Trelleborg have jointly developed the TM1 Eco Power tyre especially for this series. 65% of the components come from renewable or recycled sources. The tyres feature a particularly low rolling resistance in order to be energy-saving and thus extend the battery life. In addition, there is optimum traction, stability and driving comfort on different surfaces, as well as a self-cleaning tread for agricultural applications.
