I can’t believe this is the sixth year we have had the privilege of putting on the Western Exposure. The first year we did the sale I think my wife was questioning her choice in a spouse. She had no clue why anyone would come to buy our cattle. I am excited this year to bring her and my youngest boy with me to sale to meet all of you! I honestly think of Iowa, and the people I deal with out there, as my second home and family. I greatly enjoy and appreciate the friendships I have been able to develop during my time in God’s country. I truly believe we have improved the cattle every year and one will truly be impressed with the quality from top to bottom. Our philosophy is rather simple around here: we focus on raising cattle that are versatile for all markets. I don’t think you ever want to chase one trait or one market. Eventually, the winds will shift and one will be left standing at the altar of a dead market. We strive to market a female that can be bred multiple ways and click mated to many different sires. Out here, in the Wild West, it takes a different animal to survive. One can’t understand until they have seen the country were we run our cattle. Not only do they have to raise a marketable calf, the cattle have to deal with predators, fires, drought and work hard to find grass at times; the majority of these females were raised in these conditions and know how to survive. I truly believe that is why they are received so well in the Midwest. These cattle know how to clock in and clock out everyday! Nothing pleases us more then to see the cattle working for our customers. Feel free to call whenever to talk about cattle. I am proud of this group. No, they aren’t fluffed up, super clean, and clipped for a show, but they are honest. They have never had a bath and trust that policy won’t be changing around here. We don’t have time to baby these things. They are in their working clothes and ready to go to work. They will only look better once they make it to their new home. Thank you for the interest and we look forward to see everyone in Dunlap on January 5th.

- Trevor Roche

It is with great pride we bring this is set of females to Dunlap, IA. They represent what the industry needs: substance, power and soundness. Whether you’re raising show steers, heifers, seed stock or good commercial cattle, there are bred females here to put you in the show ring or the sale ring next fall and many years to follow. There are many donors and proven cows backing these females, as you will see, several lots retaining a flush. Each year we try to improve what is in this sale and this year’s set is easy on the eyes. If you can’t make it to the sale, please call me or one of the consultants to talk on any of the females or bulls selling. I love raising show steers and these top notch females just as much! Read the foot notes, watch the videos, study the catalog and get to DUNLAP on JANUARY 5TH.

- Nick Weaver

“We couldn’t be happier with the cattle we bought from Roche Cattle Company. The semi load of bred heifers calved in February 2013 in our hoop barn. They were very quiet and gentle to work with, easy calving, and extremely maternal. The weaning weights were through the roof and the keeper heifers look to have some real promise for the future of our herd. You can’t go wrong with sound, functional cattle that are maternally and performance driven with elite show pedigrees. Thanks again for sharing your genetics and a piece of your program. It was great doing business with you.” - Andy and Larry Platner from Lisbon, Iowa WESTERN EXPOSURE • PAGE 3

Dalton Hartman visited me last summer looking for some females for his beyond impressive female sale. Lot 1 was one of his favorites, but at the time, she was rather big. She was a January but she was built like that kid in fourth grade that could touch the net and made everyone jealous. Fortunately for me, she quit growing and filled out and has become one of the most interesting pieces of the sale. She has a neck like a crossbred and a hip structure like one as well. Perfect blaze face, big bone and super soft pastern for a 3/4 Simmental. This one has more options than a 60 piece Swiss Army knife. Her donor mother has sold great ones in this sale every year. True consistency here and one everyone should pay a little extra attention to.

Her picture doesn’t do her justice because she is one of the gentlest females in the offering. Hopefully everyone can study her video online and appreciate the amount of power bone and mass she possesses. Yet she still keeps a very long extended front third, which usually sounds like one is describing a crossbred, but she comes in a 3/4 Simmental package. This one is extremely versatile. She can raise a purebred Simmental or a state champion steer. She comes from my best donor and one that has sold multiple high sellers in Iowa.

This one is not for the first time showman. She is great for Idaho but maybe a tick athletic for the corn farmer. She is made right and bred to the hills. Keep her close to home and she will be calm as a kitten in a month. Remember, we have wolves, mountain lions and usually dogs and 4-wheelers chasing our cattle 24/7. You would be a little on your tip toes if you lived out here too.

I love this bred. She is long fronted, soft made and has a great blaze. She comes from my buddy, Brad McCollough, that has had great luck with his purchases from the Western Exposure sale. His bred purchased in 2015 went on to raise a female that has won every show down south including Champion Simmental at Tulsa for the Berlowitz family. He knows how to pick and raise them. I expect this gal to click purebred or crossed up. She has the parts to succeed.

These next two are the combination of strategic thinking, unrestrained internet bidding and, possibly, a little bit of luck. I purchased their mother and grandmother about four years ago in an online sale. She is, to this date, the most expensive cow I have ever purchased and was the first Red Angus cow I have ever owned. I love the idea of the Charolais/Red Angus cross and I think the Red Angus deal is getting hotter by the day. I jumped in and for once there wasn’t rocks tied around my ankles. I may have even had a life jacket on, for once in my life, because we hit the water swimming. Both of these females are exceptional in their rib shape and overall capacity, yet still keep a refined, angular front and possess some real power and bone for Red Angus females. They are out of a proven mother and grandmother who are both making their mark in my part of the world. Trust me, whomever has a Red Angus female in their sales next fall will be extremely pleased with the redhead in their life. Both of their mothers have flushed extremely well and, according to my sources at Trans Ova, that is highly heritable. I would expect the same with these.

The only purebred Charolais in the offering, but certainly one that deserves one’s attention. Great fronted for a purebred with no extra leather and pencil-necked describes her front third. She is nice middled with a great rib shape and no navel. A lot of the Charolais cattle have a naval that about drags the ground but somehow this one was blessed without it. Breed her to Monopoly or keep her purebred, no doubt, she has options.

I could write a book on this one on her pedigree and seeing her in person. The WINDFALL x 5001 was Reserve Angus at Kansas City as a heifer in 2014; she just sold for $50,000 in the Barry Hageman-LAZY H BAR 2018 dispersion. Multiple daughters sold in the $20,000 range with one for $22,000; I heard she was re-sold for $80,000. A full sister by PRIMO was Champion Angus, and 5th overall, at the 2018 Iowa State Fair FFA show. Add to the list the granddam, 5001, sold for $80,000. 5001 has multiple clones about to enter production and she is nearing the $1,000,000 mark in progeny sales. The homework is done here on a great one in the making. SELLER RETAINS 2 FLUSHES.

No sale is complete unless you have one of these prized animals. I have to have a Hereford every year just so the Hereford breeders can sit around the coffee shop and tell each other how stupid I am. Granted, they are probably correct, but with that being said, I am still not a Hereford fan. The one good thing about a Hereford is that you never have to take care of them in their old age because they have either blown their bag out, grown skis for toes, or they have lost both eyes before they get very old. They tell me this one does have a good pigment so she could only lose one of her eyes instead of both. Breed this one to MAB and let the internet sell the Hereford marked bovine for big dollars. In all honesty, the best bull I did ever see was the one and only, Miles. from Colyers. Breed her to him, or clubby, because color will even sell to the blind.

The club calf starter pack includes the following: A Whiskey donor, a blog post of your awesome baby calf and a voicemail that is full. Once you’ve checked all three of these you are officially in the business. This gal will check two of those off the list in her first year. If you want to be a real big time club calf guru, don’t set up your voicemail. That means you have hit a status only few enjoy, and it drives me nuts!

Here is the start of a group of females out of the great Kadabra Donor from my good friends at Swanson Cattle in Iowa. They called last winter and offered me the opportunity to purchase a large group of females influenced by 5001. I jumped at the opportunity and have been very happy with the results. In fact, I kept many of them home for my own use. If anyone has been to Swanson’s pasture sale in the last 7-8 years they would know the 5001 cow has been an anchor for their great program. The first female I ever purchased that got the ball rolling for me was a 5001. She has raised champions at all levels. Here is your chance to take part in some great genetics that are getting harder to find.

irish whiskey Irish Whiskey has created a sensation throughout the industry that is untouched, transmitting “the look” to not only his offspring, but down through generations. Another nice made Whiskey daughter out of the great Kadabra donor. I am sure you have noticed by now my cattle are not clean nor clipped to a T. I’m not Photoshop savy enough to clean them up, make all of their backs perfectly straight, and make them all stand in the perfect stance. One of my favorites and possibly the best female I have brought to town for club calf purposes. She’s got the literature and pedigree behind her and the only thing better are her looks. When we talk about cow power, I think this is what we should be referring to. Those angular, feminine things are nice and fun to look at, but cow power means power! This thing is a beast. Monster footed, redwoods for legs, massive topped and her front third is as angular, cocky and feminine as anyone could want. They don’t come around very often like this one. She is truly special and one I will gladly hang my hat on for years to come.

I realize, in the Midwest, that is a drizzle, but in this part of the world, that is ark building weather. We just about washed away! Cattle were knee deep in mud and water was running everywhere. Our dirt sucks and just washes away. In fact, when the Dankers were visiting us this fall we had to stop and let him feel the soil because he couldn’t believe it would grow anything! Going a little old-school with this pedigree, but if you study the high-dollar steers, a lot of them come from the older maternal pedigrees. Friction daughters have been getting it done for the past decade and I expect the same from this one. Super loose made and free in her structure. She is the type and kind to be one of the best females we will sell this year. Her markings make her stand out even more! Here is one of the great ones in the offering and a female that was successfully shown by my kids’ favorite babysitter. She is an absolute tank but moves and glides across the pen with ease. She is yak haired and a future donor prospect for sure. She won supreme her only time out at our state fair and the judge continually said, “I’ve never seen anything like her before.” She is a standout and a donor prospect.

I didn’t picture this heifer and honestly, it was due to laziness, not her quality. She is one of the best half-bloods in the sale. After picturing cattle all day, one begins to get tired of the endless attempts and so many close calls ruined due to the need to urinate when standing perfect. In fact, had Marilyn Monroe been in in the on-deck pen towards the end of the day, I probably would have let her out as well. That’s what happened with this one. She is beautiful and plum good. We just failed getting her pictured. Broker females work and this one will for sure.

As one looks through this catalog I hope they can appreciate the Hartman sires influence on the Simmental breds. This is not a paid advertisement for their program, but their cattle flat work in all environments. Yes, they win in the rings all across the nation, but to excel in our tough environment is a true testament to their functionality. I have been looking for an outcross to their genetics for years for inherd use. I have attended numerous bull sales all across the Midwest looking for something similar; I am sorry folks I can’t find it! All of my Hartman influenced cattle have big feet, great bone, belly, power and rarely, if ever, will you get a trashy front. These are great traits, but the most important for my world is they calve! We have NEVER touched one. Yes, our cows are thin when they calve, and that helps, but we like to sleep, and we have never had to check a cow a night. They flat out work in our area. I have tried others, but I keep coming back to Mr. Congeniality’s cattle. This one is an example of everything mentioned above.

This next group of sisters were raised in a co-op herd in south-central Idaho. They summered on a dry, desert permit that would make a grasshopper question his permanent residency. In fact, a group of these calves were partnership cattle I own with Kerry Danker. When he received them last fall, he called me and, as nicely as he could, asked me if I had ever thought of feeding the poor things. I’m sure he lost a lot of sleep wondering about what moron he was partnering with.. They were certainly green, but have turned the crank and have grown into some true breeding pieces. These will thrive anywhere they land…trust me it will be better than where they came from.

Here is a really nice group of Profit females which I think truly attest to the high price of the Profit semen. This half-blood female is my type. She’s nice sized, long fronted, maternal looking and was raised in a co-op herd in an Idaho desert. We run things different in Idaho and these calves were green when I got them. Once feed was placed in front of her, she performed and excelled with the best of them. Out of a great female that has raised high sellers in years past, including a $6,500 bred heifer last year! I can expect nothing less from this beauty.

Here is a special lady for any operation. She has the long cobra neck that we all love to see, but often in my experience that spells future calf starver. Not with this lady. She is as good as her picture looks, and her mother is a maternal marvel. All the bull calves still think her mom is hot at 8 years old. The 811 cow is one the best to roam this wanna-be operation. She has raised bulls, females, steers, and not a single unmarketable calf. I have all the confidence in the world here. She has a more optimistic future then both the Nebraska and ISU football programs. Let’s be honest, Lincoln isn’t changing anytime soon, and Campbell will be gone in a few years. Someone will probably want to poke me in the nose for that, but they are both better off than me. I cheer for BYU and the Dallas Cowgirls. I’m accustomed to a disappointing let down season every year.

Big, stout, level hip and really soft haired for a Simmental. Her mother is a Meyer, but I think there is some Maine in the background. Combined with the great sire, Profit, we are provided with a female that is more useful than a pocket on a t-shirt. She can raise steers, show heifers, bulls, or your kids. Here are two sisters that were both out of the co-op herd from South Central Idaho. It looked like they had been living off of aerial food drops that never seemed to arrive. They both came in at about 400 pounds October 1st with a February birthday. Many people think you need to feed the size and growth in to cattle, but I beg to differ. These females have been stressed and know how to survive. I expect them to do great things. They’re full sister sold in the Hartman Customer Appreciation sale two years ago and did a lot of winning throughout the Midwest. These ladies will work.

High Caliber got kicked to the curb way too early. At first, his calves look just okay but once they reach a year they start to become special and at 2 years they are exceptionally good. This heifer is a testament to that. Go ahead and try to pick a hole in her. She is so functional in her make and looks like the type of females we should all be striving to raise. Her mother has done an excellent job for us in Idaho and last year was flushed multiple times with great results. Functionality, reproduction and overall good looks back this great female.

Here is a great female out of my infamous 361 Tyson donor. She has raised three high sellers and Adam Pryor has windrowed them all. Granted, he can roll the dice on high priced cattle because he has a guaranteed backup plan as Scott Frost’s stunt double, if the cattle deal doesn’t work out. Granted, Frosty looks like he could bench 300 right now, and Adam might hang out at Casey’s General a little too much, but one thing for sure, Pryor knows how to find the good ones. His pasture sale is always one of the most impressive and they win all across the country. Jump on the 361 donor bandwagon and own a piece of that great cow.

Holy frijole mis amigos! Yes, she is just a 1/4 blood Simmental, but how you can get this much power and volume into a heifer? I don’t know. She has been a standout since the day she hit the ground, in 2 feet of snow on a turnip field next to my house. She’s had a belly from day one, which usually means they will be a little early maturing, but this one has grown and is one of the largest, most powerful females in the offering. Mate this one to some little pencil-neck bull, reap the benefits, and send me a Christmas card.

My good friend, Ben Walbrecht, or as he’s known west of the Missouri River “Bin Laden,” told me last year he had the very best half-blood Simmental female, I had to buy. He said she would bring a bunch of money on my bred sale and would be a sale feature. I was liking everything about the conversation until he told me she’s white. White? Half blood Simmental? From a guy with the nickname of Bin Ladan? Sounds like a bad deal to me, but we are sticking to our story and after you see her, she will stick in your mind. She is really nice and made perfect from the ground up. Her color makes her extremely unique and opens many doors.

If I had a nickel for every time this heifer jumped the gate, I’d be a millionaire. Actually, she’s probably one of the most gentle in the offering and has the look to become a great mother. One of my favorites and will be one of yours. There’s nothing more relieving than to hear a heifer begin sniffing and licking her calf. Plan on plenty of that with this one. She is great haired for a smoke and probably one of the most extended heifers in the offering.

Two things the world needs more of is parking around a college campus and Charolais Red Angus cross females. I love these mellow yellows. They are so soft made yet powerful and their color makes them stand out from the rest. I sold this female’s brothers last year in my bull sale and they were beyond well received. Breed her club calf, breed her maternal, breed her to whatever you want. Charolais influence females will always raise a good one.

A lot of the Charolais influenced cattle are not pictured because after being torched, and our 4-tenths of rain, we were a big mud hole. Yes, you read that right, .4 inches of rain and we were almost out of commission for a whole day because of the mud. The Charolais cattle just do not respond well to mud, burnt hair and cameras. This one is a maternal bred, club calf raising, female delight. She is packed with power, soft haired and good boned. Based on what her mother has done in the past, I expect her to be a great female in anyone’s herd.

The torch puts a really nice char outline on all of these Charolais. It’s kind of like how my mom used to outline the coloring pages I would get from the grocery store and resubmit with hopes of winning the $5 prize money for the best coloring. If we weren’t lazy, we would at least brush them when done, but maybe next year.

One of the worst traits of a Charolais is a skunk tail…unless you’re trying to raise club calves or skunks. Her mother is a purebred Charolais that raised a $7,500 bred heifer for Pryor two years ago. This one is packed with power but yet feminine and based on how her mother and her daughters have produced I expect great things from her. The skunk tail will hopefully throw some extra color into her calves and ease the marketing burden.

I am more than tickled with my purchase and I am 100% sure they are extremely pleased with her mother. I love to see the results of the cow sale and there are many females in the offering this year that were raised by females that we have sold in years past. This one along with her mother have a bright future ahead. If I know the Sorensen’s, and what they like, there is a good chance they might be pushing a guy or two on this future great one.

Manager of the year purchased this amazing beast from Mike Khulman a few years ago to lead off the bred heifer offering the following year. Of course with all good plans it never came to fruition and she was the only heifer out of 90 in her group that came in open. There was no way I was going to sell her with her full sister recently winning the Denver Stock Show, so I stuck her into the fall calving group and for lack of a better term, forgot her. She had a calf and this winter as I was going through the cattle I remembered who she was and brought her in to highlight the cow offering for this year. She’s about to have her second calf and it could be the humdinger we are all wanting to put on the front of our Show Circuit ad. My buddy, Mike, swears by this mating and I’m starting to think he’s sharper than he looks. It is hard to find a cow more powerful yet still maternal than this one. I found her this fall and kept her open specifically to be a feature for this sale. She is built like the girl in high school that wanted to wrestle but the boys were scared to tell her different. Rhonda Rousey in bovine form. She is stout, tough and taking names. This one could be a big time donor prospect. She is beyond impressive in every aspect. It would have helped had someone not pooped on her back before picture day, but around here, if that’s the biggest problem we have, we are doing pretty good.

Danker found these studs during his hunt in Idaho. WESTERN EXPOSURE • PAGE 39

This female was going to be a sale feature last year, but after the 38 hour truck ride and a whole lot of stress, she kicked her calf out a week before last year’s sale. Once I got her home I bred her Angus right off the bat. She is too special to chance a calving problem at a young age. Her future belongs in the donor pen. She is out of the famous and money generating Chantel that raised a $65k heifer this past fall. She has been IVF flushed twice with amazing results. We have over 24 frozen eggs in the tank right now and I own 3 full sisters to her at home. If you are in need a new Charolais influenced donor this is your ticket!

This female originated from Randy Beller in Nebraska. I own her with Jon Petersen from Nebraska and when we purchased her she was open and ready to flush. Unfortunately, I think she was a little stale and we have tried to flush this female twice with minimal results. She has produced in the past, and many ET calves have been sold out of her. She just needs to calve, in my opinion, and reset her reproduction cycles. Buy with confidence, because I need to pay Jon back! Actually our deals are so intertwined we aren’t sure who’s ahead of who! But, for sure, this one will put you ahead of the rest if she’s yours.

First of all, I want to thank Trevor for this bear hunt. We went to North Central Idaho with Jay Roche and two other guides. Between their stories - some true, and some I’m not so sure about - and the scenic country, it was quite the experience! Trevor calls it “God’s Country,” but I’m not sure about that. We hunted with dogs that had GPS collars, across creeks, rocks, trees, snow and other obstacles. At one point, the bear was 12 miles away from us and circled back and ended up 1.2 miles away. The dogs tree’d him, thank heavens, because I wasn’t sure if I wanted to walk 12 miles in the mountains to shoot him. The hospitality Jay showed us was second to none. Besides wrecking two four-wheelers and tearing the front end out of one pick-up, everyone came back in one piece with lots of pictures and stories. I could go on and on about this hunting trip, but Trevor said to keep it short! Thanks again, Trevor, for one hell of an adventure. - John Stoltz PAGE 48 • WESTERN EXPOSURE
