Welcome, once again, to the 4th Western Exposure Bred Female Sale. It feels like yesterday I was getting ready for the first sale in a foreign land called Iowa. I was a nervous wreck hoping at least five people would show up. Luckily, Nick and I were well supported and we are still thankful. I feel like I have put together a set this year that will not disappoint. I focused on females with bone, power, great fronts, and maternal genetics without steer pedigrees we all too often see. Many of the female sales have become ports to dump the females that don’t sell the previous fall alongside their brothers. Nick and I have made it a passion to offer only maternal genetics, and with the exception of 3 or 4 lots, this group is strictly maternal. Many of the females are maternally bred on the top and bottom side of their pedigree to be mama cows. I feel if you are wanting to raise steers, females or show heifers this group can get the job done and fill anyone’s need. Please realize these have not been babied nor had any special treatment. They are presented in their working clothes with minimal fluff and puff. The cows weaned calves this fall or were spun from fall calvers to springs. These are real cattle for the real cowman. I thank you once again for the interest and look forward to seeing everyone in Dunlap January 7th.
- Trevor Roche
Welcome and a big thank you for the past three years. This set of breds that were assembled well over a year ago as we sorted just for this sale, there is something for everyone. The pedigree, the cows they are bred up from and what they are bred to, the sky is the limit. Quality runs very deep again this year! For those who traveled this fall to pasture sales or watched on line sales, a lot of the cattle gave up some muscle expression, the ones that didn’t, sold very well. These bred heifers, cows and bulls have it for you to breed them to whatever you want for you to market the offspring and make money for several years. An old cowman once told me, “Markets high or low, it’s always a good time to buy breeding stock”… You will appreciate this sale on Jan. 7th, 2017. Hope to see you there! A thank you to my parents Pat and Terri, my brother, Gabe, and his son, Dillon. A big thanks to my better half, Missy, for helping in the picture pen!!!
- Nick Weaver
“We couldn’t be happier with the cattle we bought from Roche Cattle Company. The semi load of bred heifers calved in February 2013 in our hoop barn. They were very quiet and gentle to work with, easy calving, and extremely maternal. The weaning weights were through the roof and the keeper heifers look to have some real promise for the future of our herd. You can’t go wrong with sound, functional cattle that are maternally and performance driven with elite show pedigrees. Thanks again for sharing your genetics and a piece of your program. It was great doing business with you.” - Andy and Larry Platner from Lisbon, Iowa WESTERN EXPOSURE • PAGE 3

This lady is a lot like Aretha Franklin - shape, size, sass, and she demands some R.E.S.P.E.C.T. I think she may have accidently ate the heifer next to her at the feed bunk. If she ever walked in front of a mirror, she would melt with embarrassment, but till then, she will continue to rule the roost. I have never offered nor seen anything like her. Is she in good ring? You bet! But, the amount of capacity and volume she possesses can not be fed. She is truly a special individual with a pedigree that is even more unique. When I called Russ to get the whole story on Southern Comfort, he was talking about bulls that I didn’t even know existed. We eventually ended up in the South of France, loading a bull for import, and I was more confused than before. But one thing is for sure, she ought to provide a little comfort to the bank account for years to come. Seller reserving the right to one successful flush at the seller’s expense and buyer’s convenience.

Here is a really neat Whiskey. She is an absolute powerhouse from behind and very attractive for steer production from the side. She was the last heifer I pictured and by the time is was her turn, I really didn’t care if she was standing perfectly or on her head I was done. She is better in person! I see her becoming a donor in the future with a ton of potential to raise the next great one.

The 3 hardest things to do in this life are: #1 - Cross a barbed wire fence leaning towards you. #2 - Kiss a girl leaning away from you. #3 - Sit on your hands and not bid on this heifer! I think she has it all. She’s awesome fronted with her neck tying perfectly into her shoulders for an awesome cocky look. She has a ton of natural bone underneath her, with a massive foot that plants right where the other took off. To top it off, she comes from an awesome mother and grandmother that is still in Idaho and doing an excellent job. I like the heck out of her and you will too! Turn over every cushion in your house and check the ashtrays of your vehicles because she is worth owning no matter what! Suerte mis amigos!

These next two are just like the Judd sisters, Wynonna and Ashley, both very talented in their own sphere but, oh so different in appearance. Lot 7 is really pretty and complete whereas lot 6 is loaded with power and grit. I was always more of an Ashley guy myself, but in this case, I think I’m leaning Wynonna. Lot 6 has a ton of power and still moves with ease and a great front end. These both come from a great Donor with embryos selling out of Whiskey and Maternal Made. She is very fertile and flushes extremely well. I wouldn’t expect anything different with these. Lot 6 is half bulimic like myself. We both binge but always forget to purge. She hasn’t had a special home and access to a hidden feed source. She found the Hostess aisle for sure and hit the Ho Ho’s pretty hard. Whiskey influenced cattle are usually a tick to hard doing for Idaho but this one breaks the mold. She fleshes like an Ohlde, but has the pedigree to raise a steer. Unique indeed!

A direct Meyer 734 daughter is as rare as a hard working Bernie Sanders supporter. There are legends of both, but I only know of a few still in existence. Old school genetics might not be what the semen jockeys are promoting, but it’s hard to argue with results. The only thing more consistent than a Meyer x Angus cow is a bathroom visit after eating Mexican food.

It sure is sad to see this one leave the place. Her mother “752” was either eaten by wolves this summer or some squatter got really hungry and had one heck of a BBQ. She was a great cow and came from a great mother herself. Lot 9 was awesome haired as a baby and super sleek made. She will do a great job for whoever lands her January 7th. Dave Faber has been a great mentor to me over the years. I think he realizes how stupid I am and feels sorry for my wife and kids. I have had many dinners with him and he always teaches me ten times what I can remember. He has forgotten more about breeding, ET, etc. than I will ever know. When I saw the opportunity to own three full sib daughters of his famous donor Chantel, I knew I had to pull the trigger. Many donor cows are talked about, but I have never seen one like Chantel crank them out year after year. She is the most consistent I have seen and can sell them as high as anyone! Chantel has raised promotional bulls and some of the most dominating heifers ever shown, but you never see any bred females for sale out her. Here is the chance of a lifetime! These genetics are not found every day for sale. They are future donors for sure with their endless mating options for club calf or papered charolais cattle. Selling half interest in lot 13, 14 and 15 sell as choice with the option to take them both at the same money.

She is selling as a commercial PB Char but with the hope of getting them someday. For a PB Char I think she is pretty darn nice. She is very soft haired and has a great front end that goes for miles. This is my Dingo dog of the offering. I purchased her from my buddy, Brent Sieck, in Nebraska, for a family to show. They decided not to show her after their kid tore an ACL in football, so I sent her to my good buddy, Clay Whitehead, in Florida, with a bull he bought. Ya, you read that right, Florida - where alligators live. She was successfully campaigned down there and once again returned to Idaho this fall and now she has found her way to Iowa. One thing for sure she is a traveler and always ready and eager to go just like a poor, dumb, Dingo dog. Super stout Broker female with a tail on her you could cut off and use as a corner post. I believe in the tail theory and she is the proof. Massive footed with a bone T-Rex couldn’t even fit in his mouth. She’s pretty cool and deserves some serious attention. WESTERN EXPOSURE • PAGE 9

If you haven’t noticed, take a look at the opening page of the catalog and there should be a family picture. Take note that I had another kid this past year, and it looks like college will still be the cool thing by the time they all graduate high school. I will probably have to have a dispersal when that day comes! I call this one college fund and should be keeping her because I think she could pay for a college fund. I love everything about here. Her mother is a flat awesome Meyer cow that is about 15 and still cranking them out. Her dad is the best bull on the place and has sired an excellent set of heifers in the offereing. She has the perfect blaze we all love and she just looks like a big time producer. Great lines, great feet and legs and great potential. I love this heifer. Her mother originates from the cows I sold to Brad Smith a few years back, and this bred is just like Bradley. They are both very honest, and what you see is what you get. They both are good stock and extremely beneficial to the industry. Last, but not least, they also are both carrying a little extra condition and looking for a new owner. The heifer needs a buyer, and Brad…a wife! Someday he will learn what it is like to be owned, but for now, he still runs on open range. 017’s mother is one of the best cows I own and you can bet the family dog this one will follow her mother’s footsteps.

Our cow herds are getting so crossed up with the neighbor’s the Beefmaster bull thinks twice before jumping the fence. We breed for steers and when it comes out the wrong sex it all of a sudden becomes a cow prospect. I guarantee when Shaq’s little sister was born, his parents weren’t thinking she would be a flyer on the cheerleading squad, nor should we be disappointed when our steer bred cows don’t milk. That will not be an issue with this one. She is bred to be a female and that’s exactly what she is.

We lost 1324’s mother this year and it’s never a good day when a Whiskey goes missing! She will be dearly missed, but she left her mark on this I-80 female. Not only is she cool pedigreed for a future club calf mama, she is awesome haired. Usually an I-80 wants to get a little kinky haired, but this one is super soft haired, loaded with bone and has that cool, show steer mama look, that only a true Iowa cattleman appreciates.

I had the great idea a few years ago to make some females using the old school maternal bulls. I started searching for semen and had it come from all over the countryside. The only problem to my theory was the semen. I think it has been jockied around so much only one swimmer remains half alive, and my conception rate was horrible! Well, here’s about my only success story. She is from the great Witch Doctor and we need more on these in the world. The new bulls have about as much maternal in them as I do and our cows are going backwards. Own a piece of history and relive your glory days. If it makes you feel any better, just put Whiskey in her ear and you’ll feel great knowing what she looks like compared to what she cost. Mark Johnson bought my mystery lot a couple years ago, and if I remember right, she has put one in his pasture sale every year. It is beautiful-- if rocks and more rocks trip your trigger. She is an absolute freak for a papered Charolais. She’s super clean-fronted with a ton of power and capacity in a good sized package. I bought this cow about 3 years ago after looking at her mother. She was an OCC Just Right that wasn’t the typical OCC that couldn’t pass the height requirement to ride the roller coaster. She was a massive beast with a huge hip and great sized. I sold her first calf as a bull to Arizona and wanted to flush her but she snuck on a truck and was not heard from again till the following summer. She unfortunately had twins next and we all know how successful that is! Well I spun her from fall till spring and now here she is. She is very intriguing indeed with a potential that has not been tapped into yet. Bred to Here I Am might put her on the map for sure or at least in your pasture sale pen.

After 6 hours we had 10 eggs and he got none of them to stick. Other than that, it was very successful. She has never been A.I. bred since. When I was a 2nd grader I saved my money for 2 years and bought a cow from my dad for $51 dollars in $1 bills. I kept track of #177 like a mama grizzly keeps track of her kids; however, one day, they must have been a few head short for a truck heading to Nevada and #177 got the call up to the big leagues. That’s the last we heard from her. It’s kind of the same story here. Lot 93 was one of the most attractive cows we have ever owned but she was lost for years. She eventually came home and when I found her I had to get her bred and offered to you! Is she old? Yup, but she has some years left in her, especially now since she’s coming to the promised land to live on grass and silage. You might have to slap her in the morning because she will think she’s died and gone to heaven considering where she’s came from!

If you love to see clean cows don’t bother buying her. She manages to be a greenish off white tint most of the summer and literally tries to camouflage herself in the pasture. She must be sensitive to flies or something because she throws her tail non-stop but she also throws awesome calves! Take a look at her daughter at lot 16. If I was Trump, I would assign Hillary Clinton to be ambassador to Libya and make it a gun free zone. Give her a taste of her own medicine. The only hope she would have for survival would be to buy this cow and put her in front of the gate with a newborn calf. She could keep a whole army away for the first week. There is no bluff in her! Don’t bother tagging her baby and she won’t bother tagging you. She’s one of the smartest cows I have ever been around. Honestly she will only hunt you for the first week and only if you are messing with her calf. Personally, I like to see this in a cow. It’s a lot better than the Hereford cow that calves and walks off as she confuses constipation with birth! Never been A.I. bred and could have a great one inside.

If not, you need to be bidding on her. Bred to One in the Chamber will for sure make a cool colored calf at least! Plus, if the calf gets sick during the summer they are usually really easy to catch because they are already blind from pink eye in both eyes. Just sneak up and put your rope around the neck. Another commercial PB Angus that is perfect for my area. Lots 108112 all came off grass the 15th of November. Please realize our grass isn’t like yours. After seeing some of my cows that have spent a year in the mid-west, I can’t even recognize them. It’s amazing how they change out there and become beasts with muscle definition we can only put on a dry cow in a feedlot! These are all a tick green by Iowa standards, but they are extremely fleshy by Idaho standard. HERD BULL PROSPECT
x I was at a purebred sale just over 2 years ago and I found the greatest Hereford cow I have ever seen. She eventually brought over 40k (if I remember correctly) but I bought some eggs out of her for 900 a whack. After praying, rain dancing, sending money to a mind reader and playing every card I could to have the odds in my favor for a female…I got a bull. Total let down for sure, however, he has matured into a really nice calf. I think the farmer with the cows getting a little crossed up or tight wound needs to take a long look at old goggle eyes. He is very stout and awesome fronted for a PB Herf. Of course he is dog gentle and very pleasant to be around as well. I would expect his females to be awesome if they look a tenth like his mother. I’m still debating if she was really a Hereford because she was really, really, really good!

HERD BULL PROSPECT
x Believe it or not, there is a long lost brother to the Judd sisters and after a lot of searching we found him! He is a sibling to the Judd sisters, whom are selling as lots 6 & 7. He is just like his sisters as far as markings on the face with a dash on the nose and a splash of white on his head, but in terms of power…WOW! This guy is a beast! Not very often does one come along with this much power, volume, and mass, yet with the ability to move like a commercial bull ready to cover big country. He was too stout to even fit in the chute. Luckily, he was so gentle, he let me clip his head in the alleyway. I wasn’t brave enough to trim his naval but he is zipper tight. His females will be jaw dropping with a great foundation donor in the rearview mirror and a bright future ahead. He’s the real deal, no fluff and puff, just meat and mass!
