I can’t believe this is the seventh year we have had the privilege of putting on the Western Exposure. It is always a lot of work, beginning in April, and especially during the fall to get everything ready. I truly look forward to every second I get to spend in Iowa. I honestly think of Iowa, and the people I deal with out there, as my second home and family. I greatly enjoy and appreciate the friendships I have been able to develop during my time in God’s country. I truly believe we have improved the cattle every year and one will truly be impressed with the quality from top to bottom. Our philosophy is rather simple around here: we focus on raising cattle that are versatile for all markets. I don’t think you ever want to chase one trait or one market. Eventually, the winds will shift and one will be left standing at the altar of a dead market. We strive to market a female that can be bred multiple ways and click mated to many different sires. Out here, in the Wild West, it takes a different animal to survive. One can’t understand until they have seen the country were we run our cattle. Not only do they have to raise a marketable calf, the cattle have to deal with predators, fires, drought and work hard to find grass at times; the majority of these females were raised in these conditions and know how to survive. I truly believe that is why they are received so well in the Midwest. These cattle know how to clock in and clock out everyday! Nothing pleases us more then to see the cattle working for our customers. Feel free to call whenever to talk about cattle. I am proud of this group. No, they aren’t fluffed up, super clean, and clipped for a show, but they are honest. They have never had a bath and trust that policy won’t be changing around here. We don’t have time to baby these things. They are in their working clothes and ready to go to work. They will only look better once they make it to their new home. Thank you for the interest and we look forward to see everyone in Dunlap on January 5th.

Another day, another beer…and the seventh year of the WESTERN EXPOSURE SALE! Seems like just yesterday Trevor and I we were doing the catalog for 2019. Many breeds to choose from this year and very deep in quality. Pick and choose, you can’t go wrong. The breds look amazing and are bred right for the times. Functional, flashy and pedigrees to burn, opening the door to endless breeding options after they calve. “What a year 2019 was,” everyone says. Seems like it is that way every year anymore, the weather, the markets and all the other bs going on in the world, but everyone at this sale or watching on the internet still enjoys raising, buying and selling good cattle. GOOD CATTLE ARE BRED, CHAMPIONS ARE FED! See you all January 4th in Dunlap.

- Nick Weaver

“We couldn’t be happier with the cattle we bought from Roche Cattle Company. The semi load of bred heifers calved in February 2013 in our hoop barn. They were very quiet and gentle to work with, easy calving, and extremely maternal. The weaning weights were through the roof and the keeper heifers look to have some real promise for the future of our herd. You can’t go wrong with sound, functional cattle that are maternally and performance driven with elite show pedigrees. Thanks again for sharing your genetics and a piece of your program. It was great doing business with you.” - Andy and Larry Platner from Lisbon, Iowa WESTERN EXPOSURE • PAGE 3

How a full sib to Reimanns 105 cow ended up in Idaho is still a mystery Matlock can’t solve. I found this prize at my good buddy, Mike Loecke’s Big Foot Ranch in Iowa. I don’t think either one of us had a clue what we were looking at.  I just remember him telling me, “If you want a true sale feature, you need to buy this one. I don’t know the whole story on it, but it cost me a fortune as irish whiskey an egg!”  Well, Big Foot was right and when you realize the dollars 105 has generated over time, I would be willing to roll the dice on a cow that was in the same pasture as her!  In fact, my last conversation I had with the great Rick Frye a few days before he left us, was the history of 105. Of course, he knew her story and had nothing but praises for the opportunity to own a full sib.  Well, here she is and she is also the ONLY bred that was sexed during ultrasound, and it is a heifer calf coming! Take a leap ahead of the competition and start your own success story with a female that rarely comes up for auction.

Redheads are usually a little crazy, temperamental, freckle, sunburn easy and lean towards throwing your possessions on the front yard and setting them on fire over a petty argument. Take note, she is none of the above! This is the Nicole Kidman (natural redhead) of the bos taurus. Nicole knows how to cash checks and I have high hopes for this female to do the same.  Good red cattle are hard to find. Ask the boys down south if there is a shortage and they will certainly agree. Raise what is in demand and you will always have a little money in the bank. I think she is stout enough to raise steers yet refined to raise heifers.

Watching this heifer walk into the ring will be about the same as watching my mother-in-law drive off a cliff in a brand-new Cadillac. That makes one have mixed feelings. I debated back and forth about letting this one go and I might need a tissue when she walks into the ring. I’m sure Schaben will be there to hold my hand. She’s flat awesome. I don’t know what I would change to make her any more of my type. She has body, she has bone, she has the look, hair, you name it. She can even read at a fifth-grade level. This one can do it all! Buy with confidence, and start investing in FSH because you’ll be using it, and it keeps going up in price.

This All That Matters heifer comes from a good friend and longtime customer, Jeff Scott. He always has an exceptional set of calves in the fall and we have been lucky enough to purchase a few of them and incorporate them into our own herd. All that matters certainly looks like a bull that will be able to stay around for more than a year. The few that we have had are powerful, yet soft enough to survive without a daily visit of a TMR mixer wagon.

I would love to say I raised this one but it came from the good buddies, the Voglers, in Ashland, NE. I will always be indebted to Les for taking me to the BYU at Nebraska football game back in 2015. I think it was the last game of magnitude BYU won, but at least I was there! I’m a fan of BYU and the Dallas Cowboys. That is the recipe for constant disappointment, but I am hoping this heifer will change things for the up. She is flat awesome. I’m not sure if the Michelin man has enough rubber at his disposal to find a half blood Maine with this much body, power and look. I think she is clean to boot and will have her tested by sale time. She has been IVF flushed to Fu Man Chu and Monopoly; her eggs sell as lots 156A & 156B. Maines are making a comeback, but they will only stay if they are different. Right now, I think they are chasing the show ring too hard and look like black Shorthorns. We all know how great they perform in the pasture. This one is unique. The possibilities are endless, and I would love to partner up with this one. Selling half interest with the option to double the bid to own her all.

There’s getting to be so many Simmentals in the world we will need Monsanto to make a spray! If Monsanto gets involved you can almost guarantee an ad from a blood sucking law firm on cable news seeking damages for past ranchers that bred Sims in the past! Here is an absolute freak of a true half-blood SimAngus. Yes, there have been half-blood Simmentals with freaky fronts, but they usually go back to some club calf on either side of the pedigree. This is a true SimAngus out of an exceptional purebred Angus donor cow. She is about as pretty fronted as you will find them, yet powerful and attractive from the side. In order for a Simmental to be worth money I think they have to be different, and this one certainly is. She’s not the typical jug headed, leather fronted, Simmental.

My 717 Chopper donor has done an exceptional job. She has always put something in this sale, and they have gone on to all pay for themselves within the first two calves. Including this year. Faber sold a great show heifer out of one of his 717 daughters. If I were to be critical of her daughters they could all use a shot of belly. But what she lacks in belly she makes up in extension, foot, bone and power. With the belly craze that we are currently living in it’s not hard the open the sire book and find somebody with a big belly. If the cattle trends correlated with humans, we would be drooling over truckers and IT guys!

Super long fronted, pretty headed, massive middled with a very attractive square hip. They are different. That’s what makes a good Simmental! I swear every single person that bought a straw of semen from Broker thinks they’re great, but unless they look different than the rest, they are just another Simmental. If one was to study all of the recent catalogs that have been released for the bred female sales you would think there is not a single animal in the whole Midwest that does not have a perfect top line or a massive back leg. Also, for some reason, the cattle like to do the old Michael Jackson move of leaning forward like a hood ornament on the front of a long nosed Kenworth. It’s getting quite ridiculous if you ask me. If this offends you, then stop doing it! If you’re buying cattle just off of a picture, I want to sell you a winning lottery ticket before I even scratch it. We are one of the few that post videos. Don’t get me wrong, I will always post the best picture I get. We rotate them a few degrees and we work dang hard at getting a good shot, but I am also proud to say 99% of our videos look better than our pictures. No, our cattle aren’t always standing perfectly or in the same position, but I’m not talented or smart enough with a computer to move legs and all that other BS that happens. This female is a perfect example of someone that looks ten times better in the video than they do in the picture. Not everybody is photogenic. She is a load and carries it quite well.

Well, the rest is history, and Justin Fields transferred to Ohio State and is currently on course for an invite for the Heisman Trophy. This heifer, too, is overshadowed by the one older than her. She is more mature, older and obviously looks the part, but with that being said, do not discredit this young, May born, bred heifer. It would be hard to find a Char better fronted and bigger middled at this age. She comes from a great donor cow that we sold in Dunlap five years ago that Dr. Faber from Sioux Center bought half of. She was never pretty enough to show, but neither was Martha Stewart a beauty model. But I bet she was one heck of a mother and I expect the same with this one. Loaded with power, guts and volume, the only thing I would change is I wish she had a twin. Selling half interest with the option to double to bid to own all of her. Seller reserves the rights to two flushes.

If you read the story about Noah in the Bible, it doesn’t mention anything about his mother-in-law getting on the ark. I sometimes feel the same as he did when putting on these sales. They are a lot of work and effort and time, but the reward is worth the effort. This one is a perfect example of that effort needed for a successful sale. She is a great female, but would not take a picture to save her life. After 45 minutes of “Try her this way, mover her this way, hot shot her, scare her, do anything to get her head up!” she finally stopped and posed. And when she posed, she posed!  This is a really good Angus female. Breed her to one of those no muscle, big belly bulls they’re promoting now, and you will certainly have a show champion.

Gentleman, when this one walks in the ring take your hats off because there is a lady in the house. She is flat awesome. I didn’t know what I even had until I got her clipped up. I didn’t even have her in the catalog at first. Thus, she is in the middle of the Angus because there was no spot for her anywhere else. I don’t know very much about the United bull, other than I had some semen in my tank so I tried him, but wow, did he click.  She is a load and would be a really fun one to breed to a Maine. Maines are trying to make a comeback and this would be a good female for a first step.

My wife watches a lot of HGTV and honestly, I kind of like it too. They are always fixing up some tired house, but, before purchasing they have to bid accordingly for their future expenses. Buying a Hereford is like buying a fixer-upper. You have to plan ahead for eye surgeries, sewn up prolapses, milk replacer for the calves and batteries for hot shots. On the flip side, once the stars align, they can be very profitable! There is still nothing easier to sell then a Hereford marked show steer. It doesn’t matter if it’s born in January or September, they are always marketable. Plus, the PB heifer trade is still strong. Obviously, my sale is not complete without a Hereford, and I am still not a proponent of the breed, but I know quite a few people making a great living selling these wood headed, slow moving, can’t find a gate even if it was right in front of them, Herefords. Breed her MAB and let me buy back the heifer calves. On a side note, this Hereford should be proud, as the only bred I have ever had lay down while taking her video and pictures. She was also in the timeout pen inside the picture pen and sat like a dog for most of the show. This one is special in a special kind of way.

I love this female, and many people might ask why she isn’t bred to the new, hot, club calf influenced sires that the semen jockeys are promoting. I decided to breed most of my stuff to Angus and some Daddy’s Money because there are more c-sections performed in the Midwest than there are calves out of firstcalf heifers in pasture sales. I have never had a customer angry because of a live calf, but I have because of a c-section. I had to pull two calves on just two heifers last year. They were both bred to the new, hot, calving ease sires. One of them we even pulled out with the pickup (both kind of lived)! This heifer, as well as all the others, are just too good to risk it. Get the first one out alive, and then start having fun mating her because she will certainly raise a winner.

Danny does a great job with the cows that he runs and his sale cattle always look great. This female has looked awesome from the day I laid eyes on her. Here is a really nice, May born heifer, but she is just not quite as mature and developed as her counterparts. She is an actual May. Not like all of the May borns that are shown at the same size as the February’s. Now, if you are from the Dakotas or Wyoming, I can totally see baby calves being born and still freezing ears in May, but for the other 99% of the May calves I would like to raise my BS flag. They should just have classes at the shows for Januarys, Februarys, and Marches because everything after the Marches were born in March/Feb anyways. Don’t let the size discourage you from this heifer’s potential. She comes from a great mother and was an embryo calf that was placed late because her recip aborted her early pregnancy. One of my favorites in the late Simmental division.

This female comes from my good buddy, long-time customer, and as my wife states it, “a really good looking old guy,” Joe Sullivan. Joe is one cool cat, and he certainly sent me one cool heifer. He has always bought bred stock from me so I told him to put me together a set of heifers and he did an exceptional job. This one came straight out of his replacement pen and I think we would all have to agree that Joe knows how to pick them. Super smooth and her lines with a great front end and she has that ever important look that she will be a good mother with that sleek blaze face.

When this calf was born, I was as mad as a midget playing with a yo-yo. I was for sure it was a bull, and a promotional bull at that, when it stood up. This thing was an absolute hairy freak. He jumped up with a long cocky neck, massive bone, stretched, cranked his tail…and then peed out the back. Talk about disappointment. I think my wife felt the same after about our first week of marriage. I will be the first to say if they look like a steer, they milk like a steer, but every once in a while I am proven wrong. Hopefully this is one of those times.

This heifer comes from my good buddy, and longtime customer, Mike Kuhlman. He sometimes has that lost look where he doesn’t know if he’s pitching or catching, but he does a lot of my nutrition work and he is pretty sharp. Give him a call if you ever have any questions. His cattle are always in great condition in September and everything he has told me has worked great. This heifer was the result of an embryo package he purchased from me a few years back and I purchased the heifer back. She ran around the pen for half a day and she never once stood in a decent position to take a picture. She had a sister bring $19,000 to Jorgensen a few years back and produced a heifer calf that is killing it in Mineral Point for the retired bull rider, Bob May.  Her full brother was my Lot 1 in my bull sale last year, and she had a full sister sale to Swansons for $13,000 four years ago.

I might be crazy for selling a cow this good that is just getting into her prime! This cow has produced some great seedstock in the few years we have had her, the first calf out of her was a low birth weight, red, brockle face, Blaze of glory bull that I used to cover my heifers this year and let me tell you I have been nothing but impressed with him! This baldy cow has it all. She is zipper fronted, massive middled and perfect structured! She is Safe AI to the great Dew North and I think this could be a grand slam mating!

After a 30 hour shrink I was able to get this whale into the chute. She looked like a sumo wrestler flying coach, but it held her long enough to get her head clipped. She had a freak accident this spring. I was chasing about 20 pair through a bog, and she was one of them. When they came out with three dogs on their heels her calf was not with her. I went back and found him dead for no reason. I don’t know if he got trampled in the mud or what happened, but she had an easy summer and ballooned up. Much like I did my freshman year of college. That being said, she still possesses a ton of natural power. It’s hard to find one like her with bone and mass but still keeping a pretty front end. I honestly have never done anything with her. She calved a little late as a heifer and just ran with the commercial cows. She is young and ready to be put to work. It will be exciting to mate her different ways and see what she can produce in the future. These kind don’t come up for auction very often.

Always be careful when buying cattle through a dispersion. I bought this Whiskey female out of a dispersion south of Idaho. She was bred but was bulling a few weeks after arriving to Idaho. I realize freak things happens but in a dispersion there’s rarely a return phone call to resolve a problem. Since I didn’t want to wait a year to see what I would get with her I put her right into embryo production. She performed exceptionally and has embryos selling later in the catalog. After banking a good chunk of eggs, I bred her on her first shot this summer, and here she is today. She is unique, too, for her different color and also her power. This is a club calf mama.

Every year, we have a club calf starter pack, and I think this certainly will fit in the package. Buy a flat brim hat, get your pants pressed, put on some Nikes, grab your clippers and then tell everybody how to run their cows because your three are doing so good. It will be four after you buy this one! She’s got a future high-dollar one brewing and after you get all that gear, you’ll be able to clip him into anything you want anyways. She’s powerful, she’s bred right, and she has the look to be that special kind of club calf mama. Here is a unique breeding piece I purchased as a calf from my friend Scott Jorgensen in Adair, IA. She comes from his famous Heatseeker donor that has raised countless dollars for Scotty. In all honesty, she is just a tick too hard doing for my area, and thus her milk production is mediocre at best.  She belongs in the land of milk and honey known as Iowa. We have banked some eggs on her and she was spun from a fall to a spring so the opportunity to part ways was an easy call. For those not at the sale, she is a shot straight legged, but it only showed itself when she became fat from running dry this summer.  I can relate, I think I’m getting a little straight from the added weight that comes with having six kids!

Winston Churchill once said, ”A good speech should be like a woman’s skirt, long enough to cover the subject, and short enough to create interest”. I feel the same about comments in a catalog. They aren’t all great, they aren’t all bad, they aren’t all donors. Just call it the way you see it. I don’t think we have the next great one here, but we certainly have a usable product. Rick frye lot

I have been putting embryos in for Rick Frye for the past three years. In fact, a lot of his high selling steers were raised from his Idaho recips. In the fall of 2018, I had a recip that was confirmed bred, but we did not have any record of who the mating was. For some reason I did not write it down. I left her with my normal SIRE: Red Rocky spring calving cows and forgot all about it. Fast forward to March of 2019, I was DAM: Monti Montana Donor going through a group of cows on my 4-wheeler when all of a sudden, the most attractive, powerful, massive, hairy, freak, jumped up and ran off with his mom. Due Date: 2/28 The second I saw him, I knew he wasn’t mine. I have never had anything look like that before in my life. I ran him down with my 4-wheeler, threw a tag in his ear and sent a video to Rick Frye saying I had found one of his calves and he is dang good. I still have that text message, and I’m glad I do. It’s somewhat sentimental now. I ended up sending that calf back to Rick’s place, but I asked him to keep me informed with what that calf ended up doing. Like I said I have never seen anything like him before. Rick called me in July with a little excitement (by Rick Frye standards) in his voice to inform me that he had sold the calf. Wade Rodgers bought him as a display bull for Denver. We all know Wade only buys the best so you can only imagine the ticket it took to buy him. I told Rick he had to take his family to Disney World now and celebrate. I told him I expected a thank you or a Christmas card because, vicariously, I paid for the trip with my amazing herdsman skills. We all know what happened to Rick, and that the Disney World trip never did happen. Even though it didn’t happen with Rick on this earth, I would still like to see Stephanie take her two, sweet children on some type of vacation, compliments of Roche Cattle. Thus, we are donating this pregnant recip carrying a Red Rocky (which Rick told me to use) out of a Monti Montana donor, because everything about this mating oozes my good buddy: Rick Frye. All of the proceeds, 100%, will go to Stephanie and her children, to go on a fun vacation this summer. Rick was certainly one of the good guys. We did a lot of business together and he will be missed. Take the vacation, coach the team, tuck them in at night and put work off until tomorrow because life is short and your time with your family is all you will ever wish you had more of.

We take pride in being the first to ever sell stock dogs on SC. Many have tried since, but they just aren’t the same. Our dogs are the type that can think for themselves. They don’t need to be told what to do every second of the day. I always say, “I want my dogs to act like a good hired man.”  They need to see what is going on and then figure it out for themselves. Some hired hands, it doesn’t matter how many times you teach, show and explain they never do get it.  There are even more dogs this way. These aren’t that type. Drag them everywhere you go, let them see everything you do. They will figure it out for themselves and you will look like the best dog trainer in a 500 mile radius.  These two prospects will have been started and understand their directional commands (Go By, Away to Me) and have a basic down. This is all that is needed for a good dog. Fire the hired man, he steals to much anyways and buy a dog. You won’t be disappointed, but if you are, remember, all dogs go to heaven like the movie says.

PAST BEAR HUNT WINNERS: 2017 - Stoltz Exotics - Nebraska 2017 - Doug Hansen - Iowa 2018 - Kevin Fisher - Ohio 2019 - Brian Little - Oklahoma

First of all, I want to thank Trevor for this bear hunt. We went to North Central Idaho with Jay Roche and two other guides. Between their stories - some true, and some I’m not so sure about - and the scenic country, it was quite the experience! Trevor calls it “God’s Country,” but I’m not sure about that. We hunted with dogs that had GPS collars, across creeks, rocks, trees, snow and other obstacles. At one point, the bear was 12 miles away from us and circled back and ended up 1.2 miles away. The dogs tree’d him, thank heavens, because I wasn’t sure if I wanted to walk 12 miles in the mountains to shoot him. The hospitality Jay showed us was second to none. Besides wrecking two four-wheelers and tearing the front end out of one pick-up, everyone came back in one piece with lots of pictures and stories. I could go on and on about this hunting trip, but Trevor said to keep it short! Thanks again, Trevor, for one hell of an adventure. - John Stoltz PAGE 64 • WESTERN EXPOSURE
