A Message from Our Museum’s President

n behalf of the AACA Museum, Inc., I would like to welcome you to our annual Night at the Museum. We’re thrilled that you have joined us as we celebrate the hobby and the successes of the past year.

This evening provides the perfect platform for us to honor two individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the automotive hobby. This year’s Automotive Heritage Award recipients are Bill Miller, Jr. and Elliott “Chip” Miller, founders of Carlisle Events. Their enterprise is a worldwide leader in classic and collector car entertainment. They have transformed the car show landscape, creating a series of national-caliber events for automobile enthusiasts. I’m sure that most of you have enjoyed their events.

Please join me in congratulating them on their significant contributions to the automotive hobby.

The AACA Museum, Inc. continues to move forward sharing exciting exhibits, events, and experiences with members and visitors. Currently, we’re showcasing more than 50 Studebaker vehicles from the early 1900s through the 1960s in “Studebaker Cool: 114 Years of Innovation.” We thank the Studebaker National Museum for loaning us the Stevens Sceptre prototype for this exhibit; the first time on view in an east-coast Museum. We also thank the Swigart Museum for their loan of the 1908 Studebaker Electric “Carry-All.” Other current exhibits include: “Harley-Davidson: History, Mythology, and Perceptions of America’s Motorcycle” along with a “Raymond Loewy Retrospective” presented in cooperation with The Hagley Museum and Library and the Raymond Loewy Estate. The Williams-Clyne Gallery offers a curated display by the Keystone State Chapter of the Pontiac-Oakland Club as we continue to partner with a variety of car clubs enabling them to have a presence here at the Museum.

We are grateful for the many ways that the Museum has been recognized this year.

• In April, the National Association of Automobile Museums honored last summer’s presentation of “Mustangs: Six Generations of America’s Favorite Pony Car” with the first-ever Special Achievement in Exhibits Award. Our award-winning exhibit was hand-picked by Wayne Carini, star of Chasing Classic Cars and all-around champion of automotive history.

• In July, we were delighted to be voted one of the top 5 Museums Nationally in USA Today’s Readers’ Choice Awards for “Best Attractions for Car Lovers.” The editors picked the initial 20 nominees, and the winners were determined by popular vote.

• Voted on by the local community for the 9th consecutive year, we were recognized as a Readers’ Choice Award winner through Harrisburg Magazine.

It is through your generous support that we’re able to provide quality exhibits, events, and experiences.

Third Annual Automotive Heritage Award The AACA Museum, Inc. Automotive Heritage Award is designed to honor and provide public recognition for individuals who made an exceptional contribution to the hobby by preserving antique automobiles and motorsports vehicles, exhibiting their vehicles, promoting the hobby, engaging in sustained, noteworthy activities that have positively impacted the hobby, and using his/her position in the hobby for philanthropy and service to others. The field of prospective honorees includes antique car and motorsports owners, writers, and employees of auto-related companies, such as car designers and people who provide governmental and social leadership to protect and promote antique auto and motorsports vehicle ownership and use.

Meet Our Automotive Heritage Award Honorees Carlisle Events Founders: Bill Miller, Jr. and Chip Miller

Elliot “Chip” Miller

Bill is the co-owner and co-founder of Carlisle Events, a title he has held since 1974 when he and the late Chip Miller (no relation) hosted Post War ’74. The Carlisle Events concept and Post-War event came to fruition after Chip and Bill were “asked to leave” a local show because the vehicle they were showing was not deemed to be an antique car. By giving a home to all types of vehicles, specifically those manufactured post-war, the Millers took a singular show, now known as Fall Carlisle, and turned their passion into a business that is responsible for nearly $100 million in local economic impact.

Chip’s interest in automobiles began when, as a child, he saw a magazine in a gutter with a custom car on the cover. He became fascinated with Chevrolet Corvettes after seeing an ad for a new 1957 model. Chip owned at least 80 Corvettes in his lifetime, and his special Corvettes still remain in the family collection. He was also interested in racing, especially vintage Corvettes.

Chip believed that the hobby should always come first in the car show business. The vendors and customers are the most important part of the business, and he felt that they should never be taken for granted.

Bill is, was, and always will be a car guy. It was his love for automobiles that sent him to work full-time at Sausman Chevrolet in Lemoyne, Pennsylvania. He began as a salesman, working his way up to sales

Chip married his high school sweetheart Judy, and they have two daughters, Jennifer and Evelyn, and a son Lance. Those three have blessed the Miller family with six granddaughters and a recent addition of a great grandson.

manager, then general sales manager. Eventually Bill owned his own dealership, followed by multiple dealerships. Miller owned a Ford dealership in Elizabethtown, PA and two Chevrolet dealerships – one in Downingtown, PA and one in Woodbine, NJ. He also co-owned a Volkswagen dealership in Carlisle with Chip Miller, his long-time friend and partner at Carlisle Events.

Due to his passion for Corvettes, Chip began “Chip’s Choice” at Corvettes at Carlisle in 1990. Each year, Chip would choose a theme and personally invite Corvette owners to show their cars in his display. Themes have included “Women and their Corvettes,” “Triple Crown Award Winners” and Corvettes whose owners “Found it at Carlisle.” This tradition continues during each Corvette event hosted in Carlisle.

Miller is a 1961 graduate of East Pennsboro High School and attended Harrisburg Area Community College as well as Messiah College. Bill and his wife Peggy have been married since 1967 and they are the parents of two, Bill III and Kristine. The Millers are also grandparents three times over.

Chip Miller was in the automotive industry for more than 40 years, including the 30+ years he was at the helm of Carlisle Events. Following his passing, Chip was inducted into the National Corvette Museum’s Hall of Fame. His legacy lives on via Lance and the entire Miller family.

Outside of “work” Bill enjoys spending time in Florida, fishing, and antique collecting. Also important to him is his active participation in community events, non-profit leadership, and fundraising.

In life, Chip would say, “Life is Good.” For him, that was more than just a phrase; it was fact. Since his passing in 2004, there isn’t a day that goes by that someone in the Miller family doesn’t utter that exact phrase in honor of him.

To the old car hobbyist, returning to the many Carlisle Events feels like coming home.

The Legacy Continues Lance Miller

L

ance is the son of Chip Miller, co-founder of Carlisle Events, who in the early ‘70s formed Carlisle Events with his good friend Bill Miller, Jr. (no relation). Lance will be accepting the AACA Museum Automotive Heritage Award on behalf of his father, Chip Miller.

Over the decades, Carlisle Events has grown from an initial event held in 1974 to what it is today, including the world’s largest all-Corvette show: “Corvettes at Carlisle.” Lance began running the Corvette show after the passing of his father Chip from a rare disease called Amyloidosis.

Lance was born in York, Pennsylvania in 1972. He literally grew up at the Carlisle Pennsylvania Fairgrounds. After college, Lance returned to Carlisle Events for several years before venturing out on his own. He founded Web Mods, a successful web design and consulting company in Ocean City, New Jersey. When his father passed away in March of 2004, Lance returned to Carlisle Events as the Event Manager of Corvettes at Carlisle. In January 2007, Bill Miller, Jr. announced that the next generation of the two Miller families, Lance and Bill Jr’s son Bill III, were going to carry on the tradition of operating Carlisle Events at the Carlisle Fairgrounds. The two men carried the title of Senior Manager. In 2009 Lance purchased his mother’s share of Carlisle Events to become 50% partners with Bill Miller, Jr. In addition to his Co-Owner responsibilities, Lance serves as President of the Chip Miller Amyloidosis Foundation and strives to help various charities throughout the year.

In 2010 Lance followed through with his father’s dream of having one of his father’s beloved racing Corvettes taken back to Le Mans. The car would be reunited 50 years after achieving the first victory for a Corvette at Le Mans, John Fitch (92 years of age) also made the journey. This was an

We’re honored to have Lance’s (and Chip’s) dream car here with us tonight – the 1960 Le Mans Corvette.

Corvettes were always in the forefront for Lance. His father, Chip, was and still is recognized as one of the foremost experts and leaders in the Corvette hobby.

The #3 Cunningham Corvette

F

or decades, the famous French endurance race at Le Mans was dominated by European teams.

American cars were considered too heavy and too weak to be competitive in a 24-hour road race. In 1960, the #3 Corvette changed all that. This legendary racer placed first in its class at Le Mans and forever changed foreign perceptions about American racing machines.

Grossman as co-drivers, was left. They completed 281 laps during the 24-hour race, taking first in class and eighth place overall. But after the historic win, #3 faded into obscurity.

Renowned Corvette enthusiast Chip Miller had a dream of acquiring this car, restoring it, and ultimately returning it to France with its original driver to mark the 50th anniversary of its historic victory. After much research and negotiation, in October 2000, Chip finally succeeded and acquired this car.

About the #3 Corvette After unsuccessfully fielding racing teams at Le Mans for years, American motoring enthusiast Briggs Cunningham met with the father of the Corvette, Zora Arkus-Duntov.

At the time, factory-sanctioned race programs were strongly discouraged at Le Mans, so the pair formed an unofficial partnership. Three Corvettes were purchased from a New York Chevrolet dealership, then heavily modified for the endurance race.

The legendary race car went through an extensive restoration by Kevin Mackay of Corvette Repair Inc. and was returned to Chip Miller in early 2002. Sadly, Chip died just two years later at age 61 from a rare blood-plasma disease – Amyloidosis. He would never live to see the restored #3 return to Le Mans.

Drivers were hired. The racers were tested on various tracks, including at Le Mans itself. Two of the cars competed in another endurance race in Sebring, FL. Finally, the trio was shipped across the Atlantic Ocean for the race in June 1960.

His son, Lance Miller, built on his father’s dream and worked tirelessly to make it a reality – with help from many friends in the Corvette racing world.

At the 50th anniversary ceremony on June 13, 2010, one of the original drivers, John Fitch – by then, 92 years old – drove the #3 Corvette, leading a parade of 50 other Corvettes for a lap around the circuit.

William H. Smith Museum Fellows Award

he AACA Museum, Inc. was created as a grassroots project that involved many different people and organizations. That formula built a world-class museum and continues to serve us well as we move forward into the future. That said, if there is one person who can rightfully claim to be the “Father of the Museum,” it is Bill Smith.

Bill served as the Antique Automobile Club of America’s National President in 1979 and 1980 and followed that up with 17 years as the organization’s Executive Director. He also served as the President and Director for the AACA Library and Research Center. These experiences no-doubt guided him as he helped lay the groundwork and led the charge to create the AACA Museum where he served as a Board President, Board Member and now Director Emeritus. Along the way, he earned many awards, including the 2005 Meguiar’s Person of the Year.

In the spirit of Bill Smith’s untiring devotion and dedication to the AACA Museum, Inc., we are pleased and proud to announce the debut of our new award, the William H. Smith Museum Fellows Award.

Museum Fellow status will be conferred upon up to three individuals per year for outstanding contributions or service toward the advancement of the Museum. A committee of the Museum’s Board of Directors will make annual recommendations for this award based upon nominations collected during the year. Nomination forms may be obtained by contacting the Museum’s administrative office.

For our inaugural class, we are pleased to welcome Jonathan I. Griggs, David A. Kolzow, Sr. and Richard H. Taylor as William H. Smith Museum Fellows.

Museum Fellows will receive a framed certificate of membership and inclusion on the Fellows plaque to be prominently displayed within the Museum.

ick Taylor was an early and active member of the Museum’s family, working on fundraising, transporting donated vehicles and providing assistance in many different ways. As a professional builder, he had invaluable knowledge that helped guide the project through the planning and construction phases. He served as the Chairman of the Board’s Building Committee. In that capacity, he oversaw the construction of the site’s first structure, the original storage and work garage, which was aptly named “the Taylor Building.”

avid donated what is perhaps the Museum’s most iconic vehicle: the 1895 Chicago Motors Benton Harbor.

This automobile, the oldest documented race car in America, is also the earliest vehicle in our collection; additionally, it was the very first donation, received well in advance of the Museum’s construction. A 50-plus year member of the AACA and a life member of the Horseless Carriage

As the project progressed, he worked directly with the building’s architect, Dave Maule and the various subcontractors who built the structure. He traveled from his home in Mansfield, Ohio, to Hershey every other week during the Museum’s construction to meet with builders, serving as a volunteer general contractor to bring the project home on time and under budget.

With construction complete, he spent many weeks onsite, working with the new staff and other volunteers to hang signs, place antique vehicles, and do whatever was needed to meet our June 2003 opening date. He was a member of the Museum’s Board of Directors for 15 years, serving as President in 1996. He is one of only two people to serve as President of AACA National, AACA Library and Research Center and the AACA Museum, Inc. He is now an active Director Emeritus and remains a staunch supporter of the Museum.

Club of America, Dave is a retired analyst who takes pride in doing most of the restoration work on his vehicles. He also enjoys doing historical research and gladly helps anyone who asks for his assistance. He has received several distinctive awards for his work.

In addition to the Benton Harbor, David has donated three other earlier vehicles, an 1896 Aldrich, 1908 Albany and 1908 Economy. David has been friends with Bill Smith and his late wife, Jeannie, “more years than he can remember.” One thing he told Bill years ago regarding cars was that they are like friends, family and everything else in life – a temporary loan from God that we should appreciate and be grateful for while we are alive.

on was part of the Museum project early on, joining the Advisory Committee in 1995 and the Board of Directors in 2000, where he served actively through 2016 and continues now as a Director Emeritus. He served as Board Vice President from 2002 to 2005 and President from 2005 to 2007. He chaired the committee that raised funds for

the Museum’s construction from 1999 to 2005 and was instrumental in moving the project into its construction phase, convincing the Board that the most effective fundraising would take place as the project went from theoretical design to a tangible building with an opening date. He then served as the Museum’s volunteer Executive Director, hiring all the original staff and overseeing the transformation of the new building from a bare shell to a fully-equipped, public museum.

Additionally, Jon played a key role in negotiating the talks that brought the Museum of Bus Transportation into the partnership. He has personally supported the Museum financially over the years, including the donation of an antique vehicle for the collection.

J

erry Keefer is an entrepreneur, power engineer, educator, and artist. Jerry has worked extensively in the power industry since graduating high school.

From the United States Air Force to the Air National Guard to private companies, he currently manages the reliability of the power grid for more than 65 million people in 13 states. He also co-owns a photography business with his wife, Lori, of 21 years. They use their storytelling abilities to create personal and professional branding images for fellow entrepreneurs and business professionals. Their high school senior portraits and their automotive fine art is sought after across the country.

Jerry’s passion for creating has remained constant since childhood. Jerry combines his enthusiasm and love of automotive history with his love of creating art that will help history be preserved for future generations. Jerry is on the Board of Directors for the Boyertown Museum of Historic Vehicles where he helps enhance and improve the museum attendee experience, research, and preservation of automotive history, and find ways to attract the younger generation to the rich history of the museum and its display contents.

Jerry’s love of cars and his passion for creating something that will preserve the history of all things automotive, combined with his professional photography and proprietary techniques developed over many years, allows him to create art that intertwines the story of both car and collector in an heirloom to pass down to future generations - in essence, capturing the story and history that can withstand the life span of the automobile itself.

Artist Jim “J.D.” Orr

J

im was born in Glasgow, Scotland. He received his B.A. in Industrial Design from the College for Creative Studies, in Detroit, Michigan. He worked as a staff designer for General Motors Corporation, at Design Staff in Warren, Michigan for twelve years.

He moved on to establish his consulting firm, Advanced Formations in Columbus, Ohio. He creates a diverse range of design services for a variety of clients and includes a design workshop/seminar component.

Jim also was appointed to the Columbus College of Art and Design as a professor in the design program. He also was the chairman of the design department at the Cleveland Institute of Art for eight years. Jim became an instrumental force, as a co-founder, in establishing the International Center for Creativity in Powell, Ohio.

His newest devotion is focused on developing a webbased training program called Dr. Contrast and the Dream Labs. The goal of Dream Labs is to motivate and inspire high school and middle school students to pursue a career in the exciting vocation of Industrial Design (www.drcontrast.com).

J.D. Orr is an industrial designer, entrepreneur, educator and futurist who currently resides in Worthington, Ohio.

His interest and passion to work with young talent have become his inspiration in life and he is fiercely dedicated to “give back” to a vocation that has given him so much.

Artist Dan Reed

D

an began drawing at a young age thanks to the encouragement of his grandfather, who painted scenes in and around his home town of Philadelphia. His influence also inspired Dan’s brothers, Trevor and Jason, who are also artists.

Dan studied art at West Chester University in the early 1990s. During that time, the university commissioned a series of four pen & ink illustrations depicting some of the original 19th century buildings on campus. That pretty much started the ball rolling. He continued to explore many pen & ink techniques and soon began adding color with pencils and water color before developing what today is his specialty, acrylic painting.

Having a life-long interest in cars, it was only natural for Dan to incorporate the automobile as a key subject in his artwork. For about a dozen years, while working a day job as a test lab technician, he continued to hone his artistic talent nights and weekends. While building a portfolio of automotive related artwork Dan would load his paintings into his vintage Cadillac and take them to weekend car shows. By 2005 Dan had built a loyal following of collectors of his work as well as a steady back-log of private commissions. It was at this time that Dan made the transition from the test lab day job to full-time automotive fine artist.

Dan’s acrylic paintings are created in a highly realistic style with a brilliant level of detail.

Kevin Mackay, Founder of Corvette Repair

K

evin officially opened Corvette Repair Inc, in 1985, renting a one-bay garage out of an auto repair shop in Valley Stream, NY. His current, custom-built facility opened in 1987, and it is currently being expanded to accommodate an ever-growing audience of Corvette collectors.

The Corvette Hunter: Kevin Mackay’s Greatest Corvette Finds authored by Tyler Greenblatt. As part of the Night at the Museum program, he will tell us more about his restoration story with the 1960 Briggs Cummingham LeMans Racer, the first Corvette to win its class at the famous 24 Heures du Mans (Le Mans 24-Hours) race in 1960. Kevin will also have copies of the book available for purchase which he will autograph.

When it comes to finding, repairing, and restoring the most important Corvettes ever built, one man stands apart from the rest in terms of the sheer volume and importance of the cars he’s been involved with restoring.

Kevin, along with his team of expert restorers at Corvette Repair, has won thousands of awards and has been featured in hundreds of magazine articles and books.

Going on 35 years in the Corvette business, his passion for America’s Sports Car has never waned.

In 2012, Kevin was inducted into the Bloomington Gold Great Hall. His knowledge and passion for Corvettes earned him NCRS Master Judge and Bloomington Gold Benchmark Judge status. Awards received for cars he has worked on are simply unprecedented, including NCRS Top Flight, Bloomington Gold, and Triple Diamond honors, as well as numerous others. In July of 2014, Kevin was invited to be the Grand Marshal of the Corvette Homecoming in Bowling Green, KY. Since 1985, the Corvette Repair team has developed a peerless reputation while repairing and restoring some of the most famous Corvettes from across the country.

Cars such as the 1960 Briggs Cunningham Le Mans Racer, 1962 Yenko Gulf Oil Racer, 1966 Penske L88 Racer, 1968 Sunray DX L88 Racer, and 1969 Rebel L88 Racer (all five cars were either Le Mans, Daytona, or Sebring class winners). The team’s work also includes the one-off Cerv II, Pininfarina, and XP-819 experimental cars.
