Alreadyourfamilieswithchildrenareseeinga renewedenergyandpassionforJesusasMaddie SchmidttakesthehelmofChildren’sMinistry.One ofmybestmemoriesfromthissummerwasgetting todothe“BlessingoftheBackpacks”forthefirst timeatVPC!Thismarksthe14thconsecutiveyear thatI’vehadthegreatprivilegetosendchildren, youth,andfacultybacktoschoolinwaysthat remindthemofGod’sgreatloveforthemandto letthemknowthattheirpastorisalwaysontheir team! Ministrymovesintohighgearinthecomingweeks andwe’llkickthatoffwithour“Taste&SeeVPC” eventonthe11thofSeptember.Thisspecialday (whichwillincludeatimeofremembranceatthe beginningofworship)isanopportunityfor everyoneatVPCto“startagain.”Weknowthat sometimes,especiallywhenyou’vebeenaround awhile,thatitmightfeelawkwardtotryandget connected.Andwhenyou’renew,youmightnot knowwheretostart.

IwasraisedCatholicandallduringmychildhood attendedSaintJoseph’sChurchinUpland, California.Afteralapseofmanyyears,Iattended SaintPeter’sAnglicanchurchinLondon,England andthenUnionChurch,anon denominational churchinHongKong WhilelivinginLondon, ElizabethandIgrewclosertogetherandwe eventuallygotmarried.Myfamilystarted attendingVPCin1998whenwemovedfromHong KongtoVienna.Wevisitedseveralchurchesin NorthernVirginia,andVPCwasthefirstchurch whereacongregationmemberhada conversationwithusaftertheworshipservice. DuringthefirstfewmonthsofCOVID 19bothoftheseministrieswere shutdown.Manypeoplearenotawarethattheseservicesevenexistand areopentoanyonewantinghelp Anothermajorchallengeisthat sometimesrestaurantsorothermealprovidersmakeunexpected changesormistakesandyouneedtoscrambletoprovidewhatwas promisedorneeded.Forexample,somepeoplehavelow sodiumor gluten freedietaryrestrictions.Intermsoffulfillment,likemanyservice activities,youoftengetmorebackthanyoufeelyouaregiving Iam oftenhumbledatthegraceandhumorthatthepeopleIamserving exhibitwhenIdeliverameal.
