FROM HOPE'S HEART... How did this happen? I’m pretty sure I was just bringing my newborn home from the hospital a few weeks ago and now we’re counting by days until my daughter’s high school graduation. I’ve got to be honest “senioritis” came early and we’ve been slogging through these last few months like a turtle running through molasses. Blessedly, these days are also dotted with multitudes of celebrations and lots to be grateful for along the way.
We’ve all been waiting to see what is coming and even though we’ve had times of celebration (Lego Sunday, Baby Shark, Easter), there still might be a feeling of slogging through a bit more. Just remember – Pentecost is coming and when it does, everything begins to move quickly. We’re close, but we’re not quite there…yet!
Here at the church, Easter was nothing short of a SPECTACULAR celebration! At the Resurrection, we see a return to life and that is exactly what happened at VPC! The sanctuary was alive with joy, music and God’s people gathered around the Word. The Town Green was alive with fellowship, laughter, and thousands of eggs. It was a moment that we had waited for, prepared for, and got to celebrate together!
That doesn’t mean that ministry should be put on hold while we wait on milestone events to move faithfully forward. VPC will not be slowing down in the weeks to come. We’ll kick off the month with Youth Sunday, which gives us a glimpse into the ways that our church is building a new generation of believers. The Cathedral Brass returns for a spring concert. A new class for parents is being led by our NextGen Director. We have the 6K Walk for Water and the Children’s Musical in the same weekend! Plus, I’ll be kicking off our summer sermon series “We Believe: A Series on the Apostles’ Creed” on May 15th. And even then, there’s so much more that you’ll find inside this edition.
Now what? What will happen the day after my daughter graduates? What is the church supposed to do until Christmas Eve? In Scripture there was a brief period of waiting upon the arrival of the Holy Spirit (Pentecost) after Jesus ascended into heaven. When that Spirit arrived to push the church out into the world it was time to GO! That’s what May and the early part of June might feel like around the church. The Transformation Teams are starting to wrap up their work and moving towards their final recommendations to the Session.
My daughter is already in the “what’s next?!” phase of her senior year. I get it. I get the joy, the questions, the anticipation, even a little bit of the anxiety. But, I don’t want her to be so focused on that stuff that she misses the good stuff happening right here and now because the day is quickly approaching when it will be “Go Time” and she’ll be so busy and so excited that she won’t have the time to go back and just rest in the joy that God has given her in this present moment. May it be the same for us as a church – ready to go, but taking a moment to just be here now– present before the Lord, together! In the Grip of Grace, Pastor Hope hope.lee@viennapres.org

WORSHIP
VPC seeks to be a warm and welcoming community that invites you to “come just as you are” to learn what it means to follow Jesus with your life. VPC can be as big or small as you want it. We have the resources of a large church, but our groups and ministries give us the warm, hometown, community feel that makes us special. We have many paths to help you get connected, learn more about God, and serve others, regardless of your age. At VPC, you’ll make friends, find encouragement, and receive support.
VPC has two worship services in the Sanctuary on Sunday mornings. Both services include Bible-based teaching combined with either traditional or contemporary music. The pastor delivers the same sermon at both services.
We encourage everyone to find a small group with whom to share their spiritual journey: perhaps a class in one of our Sunday morning Learning Communities where you can ask questions about faith, a weekday Bible study, a choir, a moms' gathering, or many others. Wherever you are in your journey there are others here that want to walk with you. Our worship is dynamic and alive and is designed to engage your mind, stimulate your heart and challenge you to discover how God is calling you to live your life. Music is an important element of worship here and we celebrate with a wide variety of music styles intended to engage everyone in our intergenerational family. Does singing bring you joy? Why don't you join us in the choir? All voice parts are needed and there is no audition necessary. We ask that you are vaccinated and boosted. May 22: Senior Encouragement (10:10am – 11:00am) For our last AM before VPC summer breakfasts kick-off, graduating seniors will be asked to share their words of wisdom as they reflect on their journey with Youth Group. CARE AND SUPPORT MINISTRIES A New Way to Grow and Serve. Only Available Once Every Three Years! Stephen Minister training is an engaging, energizing experience that features a mixture of presentation, video, group discussion, skill practice, and spiritual growth activities. Stephen Minister Training: Teaches principles and skills that equip you to provide high-quality, Christ-centered emotional and spiritual care to others. Gives you new insight into the thoughts, feelings, and actions of people who are hurting. Equips you with relational and caring skills you can apply to all aspects of your life. Helps deepen your faith as the Holy Spirit fashions you into a Christ-centered caregiver. Builds a special bond of Christian community and camaraderie. Starting in January of 2023, we will offer 20 weekly sessions and one partial day retreat. (Many liken this training to an entry-level course in pastoral care!) Pre-class reading, devotions, presentations, discussions, skill practice, and videos create an outstanding 50 hours of initial training. Once trained and commissioned in worship, Stephen Ministers then begin caring for members and friends of VPC in one-on-one confidential, caring relationships. Deacon Profile - Mary Campbell
How long have you been a member of Vienna Presbyterian Church? Before I married my wonderful husband, David, I was a devout Baptist. We joined the VPC congregation about eight years ago. Before that we attended Fairfax Presbyterian Church and then were members of Manassas Presbyterian Church for 35 years where I also served as a Deacon for three years.
Which Deacon ministries have you participated in? I have had the privilege of serving ministries such as the Funeral Memorial Team, Meals Ministry, Card Ministry, Military and Mission Cards, Transportation, New Deacon Panel, Visitation, and Communion.
For several years you have led the Funeral Memorial Team. What does the Team do? Our Team serves members of VPC and residents of our community who have lost a loved one and desire a service and reception at VPC. When a death occurs, we reach out to the grieving family member who contacted VPC to discuss various support services provided by the Deacons. In addition, if a reception is desired at VPC, options are discussed and plans are made for the event. All aspects of the reception are then carried out by the Team. We also send memorial cards to the family throughout the year.

Why do you feel the Funeral Memorial Team is important? Everyone eventually faces the emotional trauma of losing a loved one and desperately needs the compassionate support of the community surrounding them. Meeting those needs in a Christ-like manner can be emotionally embracing and extremely meaningful for a family and the friends. While our Team deals mainly with the funeral or memorial service, we also assist other Deacon Teams who are providing ongoing support to those grieving such as Meals, Neighbor- to- Neighbor, and Agape.
How does serving on the Team bring you fulfillment? Deacons are caregivers who serve others with all kinds of needs. This experience of service and fellowship has brought me on a closer walk with God. Serving as a Deacon is both a privilege and blessing, an opportunity for deeper personal spiritual growth and greater community involvement. The privilege of getting to know and serve other VPC members and staff is truly a ministry of compassion, witness, and service, as we share the redeeming love of Jesus Christ. Knowing this makes my journey here very fulfilling.
What is your favorite passage from Scripture? My favorite scripture is Psalm 23 which became very important to me as I faced a high-risk health dilemma during 2005 and 2006 when I was diagnosed with a brain aneurysm. Knowing the serious challenges of my situation, I truly relied on this scripture and my faith, knowing that if I died, I was going to Heaven. That brought me tremendous daily peace! Children’s Ministries (Pre-K to Grade 6) 3rd Floor: Exit Sanctuary through the Lobby into main hallway. Take elevator on left or use main stairs at end of hallway to access the 3rd Floor. Youth Ministries (Grades 7-12) Lower Level: Exit Sanctuary into the Lobby and take either the right hand or left hand stairwell or the Lobby elevator down to the Lower Level. Room #112 Community Room: Exit Sanctuary through the Lobby into main hallway. Community Room is on right across from the Great Hall. 2nd Floor Adult Classrooms: Exit Sanctuary through the Lobby into main hallway. Take elevator to the left or use main stairs at the end of the hallway. For security, the church office is accessible only through the Park Street entrance Monday -Thursday from 9:00am - 4:00pm. MEET OUR LEADERSHIP In the Presbyterian Church, more trust is placed in a group of people, who together seek to discern the mind of God to lead them towards faithful action, than in a single individual who has all the answers. Therefore, committees are a mainstay of the church. At the local, congregational level this means two main boards: Elders as the highest decision- making body, and the Deacons, as the care-taking, pastoral group. Both groups are to be a representation of the congregation as a whole. The Elders and Deacons are ordained positions in the Presbyterian Church (USA). That means that we believe each of them have been chosen by God and the congregation to be a leader in Christ’s church. The vows they take are the same vows that the pastor takes to become a Minister of Word and Sacrament. Once a person is ordained that ordination is considered a lifelong vocation. The ordained Elders and Deacons have a responsibility to cultivate their prayer life, to study the Bible, and to seek God in their individual, and congregational life.
