Well,itfinallyhappened.Igotbifocals.Youmight nothaveevenknownthatIwearglassesatall becauseItypicallyhavemycontactsin.I’veworn glassessinceIwas15,butbifocalsarenewtome.I probablyshould’vegottenthemayearortwoago.
It’snotthatmyoldglasseswerebad.Icouldstill seemoststuff,mostofthetime.Infact,untilIput onmynewglassesIhadn’tevenrealizedhow blurrythingshadactuallybecome.Mynewglasses areareminderthatevenwhenyouthinkyoumight notneedit,especiallywhenyouthinkyoumight notneedit,it’sneverabadideatoapproach thingswithneweyes!
WenowfindourselvesinthemiddleofLent,that seasonofrepentancethatleadsustothe Resurrection.Asapastor,Itendtowonderwhat willbedifferentaboutthisyear?Isn’tLentpretty muchthesamethingeveryyear?Wealltalkabout whatwe’regoingtogiveupandwesmearthe ashesonourforeheadsandthen,after40days,the tombisemptyandwecanallresumeeating chocolate.Therehastobemoretoit,right?
Thatdependsonhowweseeoursin.Muchlikemy oldglasses,weprobablycouldsaythatwegenerally seeoursinbecauseit’salwaysthere.But,whatifthis yearwesoughttoseeitwithgreaterclarity?Whatif wetookoursinalittlemoreseriously?Notjust confessingit,butreallyexaminingitandrepenting (turningaway)fromit?Doyouthinkitwouldchange thingsforusonEastermorning?Ido.
Whenwereallytakethetimetoexamineoursinand seektorepentfromit,wecannothelpbutfind ourselveslongingforgrace–aforgivenessand removalofthosethingsthatleaveuglymarksonour heartsandlives.ThatgraceisfoundinJesusChrist, whosteppedinandpaidforoursins.Soifyouare lookingtoseeJesus,toseehisloveandmercy,with greaterclaritythisHolyseason,takeagoodlong lookatyoursin.Likemybifocals,justalittleshiftin focus,canbringgreatclarityandnewvisiontoyour faith!

VPCtaughtmethevalueofChristianservice notonlytothepeople served,buttotheserveraswell.Theprocessisanamazingtwo-waystreet, patrolledbytheHolySpirit,thatIfinallybegantounderstandandbenefit from ThisismysecondtermasanactiveDeacon;myfirstwasabout15 yearsago BesidesN2N,IhaveparticipatedonDeaconteamssuchas VisitationofVPCHome-bound,FlowerDelivery,CardMinistry,Communion Setup,AppointmentTransportation,andevenbuildingastageforour youthgroup.Inthe15-yearintervalbetweenterms,Ihavegrownmore awareoftheneedsofourchurchfamilyandtheViennacommunity.Iam stilllearningaboutthesurprisingnumberofVPCfolksinvolvedinsharing andwaysforusalltoworktogether
