Aboutfiveyearsago,Tompoppedintomyofficeone randomWednesday.Itwaslatespringandnowhere nearChristmas.Icouldtellthathewasreallynervous andhiswife,Judy,wassmilingrightbehindhim He hadmademeagiftandhadcometodeliverit WhenI unwrappedit,myeyesfilledupwithtearsandmyheart feltlikeitwasgoingtoexplode Tomhadhand carved themostbeautifulwoodenplatewithpreciseattention tothemostintricateofdetails Aroundtheedgehe carved:“ThankYouforThisGoodOpportunityPastor Hope.”Ifyou’vesatthroughevenoneofmysermons, ever,youmightrememberthatIpray“ThankYoufor thisgoodopportunity.Helpusdosomethinggoodwith it,”beforethestartofeachone.Tomhadbeenlistening tomysermonsforyearsandtheLordputitonhisheart tomakethisspecialgift.Judywasquicktoexclaim, “thistookhimover40hourstomake!”

Yourpastorwasspeechless.Iwastherecipientofa one of a kind,pricelesspieceofartthatwasmadejust formeatthecostofsomeone’stime anon renewable resource.IloveditsomuchthatIshowedittoanyone andeveryonewhocamewithinfivemilesofmyoffice. AndwhileIcouldtellthatothersappreciatedthe craftsmanship,noonewasinaweofthisgifttheway thatIwas Tothemitwasanicepieceofwoodthat reallywasn’tpracticalasmuchmorethandécor Tome, itremainsaMichelangelo

Thisseasonweareaskingthequestion:canChristmas stillchangetheworld?Webelievethatitcanandweare conspiringtogethertomakethatarealityforour communitybyjoininginontheAdventConspiracy.

Thereare4partstotheconspiracy:worshipfully,spend less,givemore,loveall.Asweapproachthe"spendless, givemore"partoftheconspiracy,Iinviteyoutothink aboutTom’sgift.There’snoamountofmoneyinthe worldthathecould’vespenttogivemesomethingmore precious.AndifIhadtoguessattherawmaterialcost,it wouldbelessthan$10.Buthisgiftwassomuchmore.It wasareflectionofhisheartandhistime.Andthemost strikingparttomewasthathedidit“justbecause.”Not becauseitwasmybirthday,orChristmas,orpastoral anniversary,oreventhatIgaveaparticularlycompelling sermon Andthatmadethisunexpectedgiftevenmore sweet

TheheartofChristmasisthatononegloriousnight,God showedupatthedoortotheworldandgaveusagiftthat wedidn’tdeserve,thatwecouldneverafford,andthat wouldneverberivaled:Jesus.Church,ifwe’reserious aboutfollowingJesus,thenlet’sdowhatHedidthatfirst Christmasandshowupforahurtingworld…notbecause theworlddeservesitorcanaffordtoreciprocatebut becausemaybe,justmaybe,there’ssomeoneoutthere whoneedstoknowthatChristmascanstillchangetheir worldandyoucouldbetheonetoshowthem!

TheAgapeMinistrysoundsabitmysterious. Whatdoesitdo?

Tostartwith,thenounagapeispronouncedah gah pey,nottobeconfusedwiththeadjectiveor adverbuh geypmeaningwideopen.TheDeacon AgapeMinistryisafundthatprovidestemporary financialassistanceforfood,shelterorother basicneedswhilefosteringself sufficiencyonthe partofthoseinneed Themostcommonrequests areforhelpwithrentormortgagepayments, utilitybills,carrepairs,gas,andgroceries.The AgapeTeamleadersrevieweachrequestfor fundstomakesureitmeetsthepre determined guidelinesforapproval Thenamajorityofthe teammustapprovethefundingbeforearequest isgranted.TheAgapeTeammustcarefully balancetheneedsofthoserequestingassistance withthegoodstewardshipresponsibilityofthe fundsentrustedtous.

AgapeisoneoftheGreekwordsforlove,thelove thatcomesfromGod,thehighestformoflove. GodfirstlovedussothatwecanloveHimand others.Agapealsomeanscharity,kindness,or compassionwithoutexpectinganythinginreturn. Whatarethebiggestchallengesofthe AgapeMinistry?

Thebiggestchallengeisbalancingthemany needswiththestewardshipofourlimitedfunds. TheCOVID 19pandemicbroughtadramatic increaseinrequestsforhelp.Itisfrustratingand heartbreakingtohearwhatpeoplearegoing through Sometimestheirneedsaresomuch morethanweareequippedtohandle Thereare mentalhealthneeds,moneymanagementissues, aswellasjoblessnessandhealthstrugglesthat arebeggingforinterventionfromsocialservices. Wearenotlicensedsocialworkers,butwedothe bestwecantoreferdistressedpeopletoFairfax CountyServicesandtocharitiesthatmightbe abletosupplementwhatwecangive In2023 therewillbeashiftintheAgapeMinistrywith Deaconsfocusedonhelpingmembersofthe congregationandtheMissionsTeamhelpingthe greatercommunity

DuringmythreeyearsasaDeacon,I servedonseveralteamssuchasthe CardMinistry,CommunionSetup, FuneralMemorial,Meals,Christmas Cookies,andthenowdisbanded AcuteCareMinistry.Duringmythird year,Ibeganco leadingtheAgape TeamwithAshleyHarrison.Thereis awonderfulfeelingofreliefand gratitudewhenyouareabletofulfill someone’srequest

joy.Sofarthisyearwehavebeenfortunatetohelpabout25needyfamilies withalmost$14,000ingrants.ServingasaDeaconhasbeenaprivilegeand ajoy.Iwouldlikeeveryonewhohasn’tservedasaDeacontoprayerfully considerdoingso AsaDeacon,everyweek,youcanservethebodyof Christ,loveyourneighborasyourself,andgrowinyourfaithand relationshipwithChrist.FaithinActionisourmotto,anditistrue.Whatis therenottoloveaboutbeingaDeacon?

WhydidyoubecomeaDeacon?

PastorDavidJordan Haashadaskedmetwodifferenttimestobecomea Deacon,butatthetimeIwasstillapracticingCatholic.Iasked,“Don’tI havetobeonthesameteam?”Itwashardformetomakethedecisionto letgoofthefaithIwasraisedinwhichhadbeenavitalpartofmyidentity BythetimeIrealizedthatIwantedtobecomeaPresbyterianandjoinVPC, Davidhadpassedaway So,whenPastorCharlesaskedmetobeaDeacon, IfeltlikeDavidwasgivingmeanotherchanceandIcouldn’tsayno.

Howhasyourcareerasanearlychildhoodeducatorhelped youinyourministry?

IworkedasateacherinFairfaxCountyPublicSchoolsfor24years During myearlycareerItaughtinschoolswherethestudentswerelivingintrailer parksandstruggledwithpoverty.Asateacher,Ilearnedhumilityand gratitude.ThelastschoolItaughtinwasSpringHillElementaryinMcLean wheremanyofthestudentswerechildrenofaffluentbusinessexecutives, governmentofficialsandambassadors,alongwithmanynon English speakers Afterretiringin2005,IvolunteeredtoteachESOL(Englishfor SpeakersofOtherLanguages)toadultsatVPC Teachingaclassof25to30 childrenhasitsdelightsbecauseyouseesomuchprogressfromthe beginningtotheendoftheyear.IalsoloveteachingESOL,becauseitisfun toworkwithadultswhoaresoeagertolearnandgratefulforeverything youdo.Thereisabigdifferenceworkingforachurchasopposedtoabig governmententitywithsomanylayersofbureaucracythatitcantakethe joyoutofteaching NowI’monlyteachingonesubjectandIhaveasmall groupinsteadofalargeclass Whetherteachingchildrenoradults,seeing theirself confidencegrowisveryrewarding.
